Chamber endorses new hotels, with limitations

By Jane Bartnett The Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce has announced its support for “boutique hotels of no more than 52 rooms per acre, with a maximum of 75 rooms regardless of total acreage, and height restrictions which are in conformity with the surrounding RMF (residential multi-family) properties.” The chamber issued its statement in response to four proposed hotel developments on the Key that have been submitted to the Sarasota County Planning Department during the past year. Like the hotel applicants, the chamber is suggesting changes in local code that would allow for exceptions to what is now in place. However, in the chamber’s case, more limitations are being sought in comparison to what some of the hoteliers have requested. In a May 25 letter addressed to Sarasota County Zoning Administrator Donna Thompson, the chamber submitted its proposal to amend the Sarasota County Unified Development Code (as it applies to lands zoned Commercial General in the Siesta Key Overlay District). Cavanaugh The chamber proposed that the number of rooms per hotel be decreased and that parking, building height and traffic also be limited. Citing “a need for transient accommodations on the Key in the form of boutique hotels that will benefit the businesses on and around the Key,” the statement read that any such places, “must be in line with and maintain the character of the Key.” Steve Cavanaugh, president of the chamber, told the Siesta Sand “The chamber remains committed to the business community. In issuing this letter, we were doing what we thought was right for Siesta Key. This is a compromise. A meeting in the middle.”

Latest hotelier front and center Anti-hotel leader praises Balot for facing scrutiny, but objections remain By Rachel Brown Hackney SarasotaNewsLeader.com During the June 9, county-mandated neighborhood workshop on plans for the fourth Siesta hotel, one comment distinguished the proceeding from the sessions conducted on the other three projects. Mark Spiegel, president of the nonprofit coalition organized last year to oppose hotel plans that exceed current island zoning regulations, complimented Dave Balot, owner of the former Wells Fargo bank site at 5810 Midnight Pass Rd., for leading the discussion. During the earlier workshops, Spiegel noted, land-use attorneys representing the developers were “front and center.” Nonetheless, like the teams proposing those other hotels, Balot faced numerous questions. At the outset, Balot explained that he moved to Florida in 1997. He and his family lived on the Key about 20 years ago, he added, before relocating to the mainland so it would be easier for him and his wife to get their four children to

school and sporting activities on time, without having to contend with traffic — and drawbridge openings. They are building a new home on the island that they plan to move into full-time in the future, he said. “I have a great respect for Siesta Key,” Balot emphasized to the workshop attendees, who participated via Zoom. “I understand what I propose may have a lasting effect on the Key.” He and his team had no renderings, but they presented conceptual plans for the hotel, which would stand about 54 feet above grade, at the roofline. Their formal request to the county would be for a special exception to allow the structure to be 50 feet tall, instead of 35, as allowed in the zoning regulations. The team also is proposing an amendment to the county’s Unified Development Code (UDC), which contains all of the land-use and zoning regulations. That would double the density for “transient accommodations” units — what county staff calls hotel and

Greetings from the Gulf
This place is full of rock stars, including one with a Twinkle By John Morton
N
ow, I know Bobby Schneck has been on some big stages, but can any compare to his recent performance of the Siesta Sand jingle? Yes, our local guitar hero recently volunteered to crank out on video a bluesy ode to all things fit to print here, and I can’t thank him enough. Visit our new website at siestasand.us and enjoy the view. And yes, Bobby, you have my permission to open and close your shows with the tune. That’s right, both! Right back at ya, buddy! You’re welcome! Just wait until I ask him to sing once a month about the newspaper’s headlines. A loud rocker about new hotel applications. A soft ballad about turtle nests. Hey, a gig is a gig, right? Truth be told, he and many of our local musicians are getting plenty of gigs around here, thanks to the robust music scene on the Key. Just think how lucky we are -- every night, about a dozen joints rock our world with top-shelf musical acts. Sure, it burned deep last year to realize traditional concerts would be extinguished for the unforeseeable future, but the return of the intimate, corner-of-thebar shows you get here certainly eases the pain. Plus, you get to watch the shows mere feet away, and for free. With many of the tourists gone, they feel like private events. Beats the heck out of the third deck of Amalie Arena at 150 clams
per ticket. Sitting sandwiched here between the rock royalty of AC/DC’s Brian Johnson to the north on Bird Key, and the Allman Brothers’ Dickey Betts to the south on Little Sarasota Bay, our area has often enjoyed the impromptu jams by them and their visiting friends. Who is Siesta Key’s all-time most famous musical resident? That’s up for debate, but one could argue for the late Jerry Wexler, a former music journalist who went on to produce albums by legends Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Bob Dylan. Today, Schneck’s history of both tech and performance work with the likes of Aerosmith, Weezer, Green Day, and Slash certainly put him in the Siesta Key musical spotlight. Another local musician of note (thank you!) is Thorson Moore, a guitar wizard who plays all around the area. When I asked Schneck for an interview a few months back, he agreed but made it a point to say “Now that’s the guy you should be writing about” in regard to Moore. Moore has even contributed music to some of Betts’ recordings. And, someone else from these parts also has ties to Betts, starting when she was very young and following her father Buddy around as he played music with the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band. She was a little star in the making, and thus a nickname for her was simple: Twinkle. And with that, I’m delighted to report that a search under the seat of my car finally unearthed the CD case holding one of my favorites. Twinkle, I’m so happy to become reacquainted with you. She doesn’t know me, but she
should. I’m the guy whose jaw was on the ground at the Beach Club in the late 1980s as she captivated the audience with that certain something she has. Yes, there was a twinkle in her eye, but mostly the eye of the tiger. Part sultry cabaret crooner, part rock ‘n roll vixen, part super-duper soulstress, either way she blew me away. Hey, not bad lyrics, eh? A few nights later, after a second show at the old Bob’s Boathouse at the end of Old Stickney Point Road, I was jawdroppin’-it once again. It was after that show that I also dropped a sawbuck on her homespun CD she was selling in the lobby. It was called Sun Girl and contained live-music excerpts from a showcase produced by Tampa’s community-based WMNF 88.5. With those call letters, you’d think they’d be broadcasting Monday Night Football, but to my delight they were in the know when it came to true talent. I always wondered what came of Twinkle’s career, and I’m thrilled to learn she still performs in our area with her Rock Soul Radio band. In between, her story is compelling. Sure enough, she was signed by Warner Brothers, but superstardom eluded her -although that depends on how you define that, of course. Let’s just say you didn’t see her in heavy rotation on MTV. Still, she has worked in a support role with many top-name artists throughout the years while staying
true to her roots, her colleagues say. She’s never compromised who she is despite that taste of Hollywood. It seems the little queen of soul refused to sell her soul in an era when so many did. As for Wexler, he once declared Twinkle “the greatest soul singer I have seen in a long time and, believe me, I’ve seen my share of imitators.” (Visit twinklerocksoulradio.com for more testimonials and all things Twinkle). Meanwhile, Twinkle (real name Schascle Yochim) would be tracked down by an adopted brother she never knew (Tony LeClerc) and, straight out of a movie script, they’d join forces to make music together. Their band has even toured Europe. And, back to Aerosmith, Twinkle had the opportunity to open for them at what was then the St. Pete Times Forum because Lenny Kravitz wasn’t available. The crowd was 18,000 strong. OK, let’s regroup. Twinkle’s doing great, I love live music, our area is loaded with talent, and one joint after another here showcases it night in and night out. In fact, Blase Cafe in the Village recently hosted Jamie Tremps, who Schneck said “has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard.” Maybe she can sing the phonebook, but can she sing about a countywide phonebook-recycling initiative? Bobby, I’m leaving that to you. You, sir, are my true headliner. (John Morton is managing editor of Siesta Sand.)

Not even local ones. So, I’m not sure.” Jason Siesta Key “Yes. Siesta Key is a gem, and I want to keep it that way. I don’t want this to become Myrtle Beach, or Daytona. return to Florida was something the Brewer family wanted nothing to do with, and understandably so. But as fate would have it, a specialized piece of equipment that gives them more hope than ever only exists on American soil in Jacksonville. So, beginning in early July, they’ll make the trip from Texas and begin another chapter of their saga at the Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital with something called a “HAL” machine. This time, they hope what has been a terrifying tale takes a turn toward a miracle ending. Thanks to the perseverance of their son Jacob, now 15, plus the support of hundreds of wellwishers and some new cuttingedge technology, Florida actually may become the family’s salvation. But a year ago, Florida was the home to a lightning strike that paralyzed their son from the waist

down. And it occurred right here on Siesta Key. *** “We have a Sarasota TV reporter who is following Jacob’s recovery. We also get cards, letters and messages from people on Siesta Key. Many of them have also contributed to Jacob’s GoFundMe account (now at more than $50,000 in donations),” said Barbara Brewer, Jacob’s mother. “It makes a
tough day a lot better.” She paused and took a deep breath. “There are so many incredible, special people there. Some of them have even said, ‘I hope you don’t dislike Siesta Key because of this.’ It’s like they are apologizing. Many of them say they were there that day, in the same storm. It could have happened to them.” The family of four was visiting
Florida for the first time, preparing to leave the beach last July 16 as a storm approached. It was still off in the distance. Then, a bolt out of the blue found them, and they all found themselves on the ground. “My ear was ringing. I had no idea what had happened,” Barbara Brewer said. “I look over and Jacob was foaming at the mouth. I started screaming ‘Please, we need CPR!
Call 911!’ Then I screamed to God, ‘Please, please don’t take Jacob!’” A pre-med student ran over and started CPR as the storm arrived with pouring rain and howling winds. Continued on page 31

We say ‘shell yeah!’ to a local artist and volunteer
Q
You are a vendor at the weekly Siesta Farmers Market, selling your shellthemed decor you call a Little Piece of Paradise. The shells you use are found right here on the island. For starters, what first brought you to Siesta Key? I moved to Sarasota in 1981 from the Indianapolis area. I love going to the beach and Siesta is beautiful and has always been one of my favorite beaches. I have shelled and snorkeled here since I moved here and Siesta usually has some of the best shelling.

Q
How has the market in the Village, and your business there, evolved? And what makes it a special one? The Siesta Market had been here several years before I started, in 2012. It’s a really good fit for me as all of my shells are from Siesta Key. I also pick up driftwood here and use it on my crosses. I have also taken on other requests from customers at my tent and ran with them -- shell-covered letters, wineglass charms, lamp finials, nightlights, and treasure bottles, to name a few. The market has some unique vendors and will only allow one type of each vendor (one vegetable, painter, seashell, candle, etc.). It is a spot for both locals and tourists to visit and we have a lot of each, every Sunday.

the Key. Can you tell us about the creation process? I have always done my mirrors and frames in the same basic way -- I start with scallops, then augers, and then put on my larger shells. I then continue until all areas are filled in with smaller shells. Each mirror or frame has 40 to 50 different types of shells from Siesta Key. I do get requests for larger mirrors and I would not call it challenging, just time consuming. I always like to visit a home if a custom frame or mirror is requested so I can get a measurement. Then, with the help of my husband, I build the frame for the mirror. One of the last frames I did had 1,600 shells on it -- also time consuming to count!
A
Q We also have our local musicians and it’s fun to dance and sing along.
Q
What part of the Key is best for shelling, and why? And what time of year and conditions are best?
A
I don’t mind sharing my not-so-secret secret. I personally love the Point of Rocks or out on the sandbars when they are exposed. I believe the rocks and waves at the Point of Rocks, in a way, help to bring in specimens -- but
that is just a guess on my part. As far as the time of year, that’s a tough one. I enjoy shelling year-round and I believe you will get lucky on any given day. I personally look at tides and moons and think that is more influential to what you can collect.
Q
Your shell-framed mirrors are beauties. You see them it seems in most every condo on
Speaking of custom work, what has been your most challenging and/or unique request? My most unique request was a 4-foot driftwood cross for a wedding ceremony. It took some really large shells and some of the specimens I used I had found back in the ‘80s.

Ted E. Bear is a career-changed Southeastern Guide Dog. Beyond the sight-impaired, they also assist/service people with PTSD, children’s programs, Gold Star families (who lost a member during active military service), and even perform specialty jobs such as sniffing for COVID-19, illegal drugs, and arson. I raised Ted as a puppy until he went back to campus for his advanced training (we call it college). He is one of several pups I have brought to the market with me if the weather is not too hot (or, believe it or not, too cold). Ted was career-changed after he had finished both guide- and service-dog school as we were first navigating COVID-19. That’s when he picked up the nasty habit of barking, which he rarely does now. Ted loves greeting all his vendor friends and they love him as well. Dogs Mason and Cherman also have come to the market with me, and soon Andre will be old enough to come, too. I am a volunteer puppy-raiser for the organization (located in Palmetto). I get puppies at 8 to 12 weeks of age and my job is to love them and teach them the basic skills -- manners, house-breaking, more manners, exposures, even manners, and impulse control. Coming to the market is great for the pups. They get so many exposures in a very short amount of time. We have a lot of people, dogs, children, music, and they have to patiently wait until I set up and break down my booth. I don’t bring the pups until they are almost a year old, but only if weather is permitting. I have a donation container and raise money for the pups while I am at the market. All of them are given to the people at no cost. So, it takes a very large village of people to make this happen.

Save Siesta Key keeps progressing Next public meeting is July 22 By John Morton The Save Siesta Key group did not hold a public meeting in June, but it continues to garner petition signatures and raise money toward its Sept. 1 deadline to apply in Tallahassee for incorporation. Currently, Siesta Key is governed by Sarasota County. As of June 25, 500 signatures of support by island residents who are registered voters here had been collected, according to board member Tracy Jackson. At least 10% of the residents must sign their names in the form of a petition, per the application process. A recent feasibility study, required by the state as also part of the incorporation application, found the island’s population of residents to stand at 8,915 as of 2020. Therefore, the percentage threshold for petitions has not yet been reached. Jackson said that reaching all residents, many of whom may be snowbirds, has been challenging. She said her group is working with the Siesta Key Condominium Council in an attempt to track-down everyone. From the incorporation group’s savesiestakey.org website, petitions can be downloaded for printing and handwritten signature. Electronic petitions aren’t allowed. The petition categories on the website are resident, business owner, and non-resident property owner. While the petitions of only official residents of Siesta Key (more than half the year) are considered in the application process, the Save Siesta Key group seeks as many petitions as possible to demonstrate what it hopes is widespread support. “We’ve heard from many people who own property or businesses on the Key, who pay taxes here, and they want their voices heard,” Jackson said. “Our goal is to reach 2,000 petitions in total.” Petitions can be delivered to either Davidson’s Drugs Continued on page 30

The tremendous transition The Landings and Gulf Gate are exploding with new businesses,
many of which add curb appeal and excitement to the Key’s doorstep By Jane Bartnett
T
his is a tale of two neighborhoods. As the Siesta Key region grows, two distinctly different shopping and dining centers that serve the area -- The Landings Shopping Center and the Gulf Gate business district -- are both experiencing a rebirth. During the past four years, The Landings has seen a rapid and successful transformation. Benderson Development purchased the shopping mall on South Tamiami Trail in February of 2017 in a foreclosure sale for an undisclosed amount and, at that time, more than a dozen of the center’s 30 retail spaces were vacant. The luxury shopping center built in 1988 had lost its luster and the 2008 real estate crisis had left its mark. As the new owner, Benderson began to implement an extensive renovation effort that is still underway. According to the company’s director of marketing, Julie Fanning, Benderson invested heavily in bringing The Landings back to its original luxury standard. “We began with facade renovation, new lighting, landscaping and parking,” she said, “all to raise the center to our first-class standards.” With approximately 150,000 square feet of retail space with which to work, Fanning reported that Benderson has “added nearly 20 new tenants since purchasing the mall four years ago.” She said that the company also created one retail space by splitting a large one into two areas, bringing the total spaces to 31. “Today,” she reported, “we are almost at full occupancy.” The Publix store, situated at the north end of the center, is owned by the grocery giant
and was not a part of the 2017 sale. Fanning credits The Landings turnaround that was completed in a relatively short period of time to the real-estate firm’s “very careful” tenant selection. “We look for a good blend of tenants that will benefit each other and meet the needs and interests of the community,” she said. Noting the recent arrival and success of the Tripletail Seafood & Spirits restaurant, a Gecko’s Hospitality Group property, and neighboring Big Olaf’s Ice Cream as an example of complementary businesses, she said that the two opened within a short time of each other. Fanning also cited the success of the Lily Cafe that opened in early June, next door to Publix, as another strong success story. During its first week in business, the cafe had what Fanning called an “exceptionally strong opening.” Miss Jody’s School of Dance and Dog Perfect are neighboring shops. At the center of The Landings, the new EOS Fitness Center -- a national entity with more than 75 locations in Florida, Arizona, Utah, California, and Nevada -- now stands as a major presence with just more than 38,000 square feet of space. Steven McKee, EOS’ regional VP for fitness for Florida, anticipates a late July opening for the 24-hour facility that features a 22-yard pool, a “kids club,” weight rooms, a yoga studio and additional amenities. “The Landings was the right fit for EOS,” said McKee. “Sarasota has been on our radar for some time and The Landings offered the right mix in a very trafficked area. “The Landings is in a beautiful area. It fits our demographics and offers a good view
from the street.” Additional Landings entries set to open this summer and fall include the Vampire Penguin dessert shop known for its shaved ice treats; Rain Noodle House restaurant featuring ramen, stir fry and other Asian specialties; and 100% Chiropractic. The Landings Travel agency and the Corkscrew Deli are both original Landings tenants. The former Sweet Tomatoes buffetstyle restaurant space, Fanning reported, vacated after parent company Garden Fresh Restaurants filed for bankruptcy protection. The space, she said, will have “a special new tenant coming in the near future that will be very unique to Sarasota.” Gulf Gate is also hot Meanwhile, only 2.2 miles south of The Landings sits the Gulf Gate Business District. A collection of approximately 150 small shops, restaurants, bakeries, bars and markets, the business community prides itself on its diversity of small businesses. Bordered by Mall Road and Gulf Gate Drive with Superior and Gateway avenues running perpendicular between them, the district has seen dramatic changes in recent years as many new restaurants, shops, bars and lounges opened, giving the entire area a bright new appearance. “Gulf Gate is becoming more sophisticated,” said Gulf Gate restaurant and bar owner Mark Rosato. “We’ve hit the map.” A successful restauranteur who has witnessed drastic changes in the once sleepy area since re-locating to Sarasota in 2005 from the New York City suburbs, Rosato is excited about the many new positive changes
coming to Gulf Gate. “We’re now seen as our own entity and we are important to the local community The local people are our bloodline,” said Rosato, who owns the new Moondoggy’s surfthemed bar and ZuZu’s live-music-inspired cocktail bar. “We were always a stepchild to Siesta Key but we’re coming alive and we have many more years of growth. Gulf Gate is now being taken very seriously,” he said. When the upscale Brine Seafood and Raw Bar, opened alongside Rosato’s businesses earlier this year, he feels that collectively the three businesses acted as a face-lift for the entire street and brought a dramatic new burst of life to the business strip. “Brine helps us and I think we help them,” said Rosato, speaking of the way businesses complement each other. He also noted the popular Off the Hook restaurant and the much-anticipated Opus restaurant as other examples of the neighborhood’s growth. “People want more quality and higher selections. That is what we are seeing,” Rosato said. Increased traffic to all three businesses also benefits the unique neighboring shops that include the French L’ Opera Bakery Bistro, the Scandinavian Gift shop that was featured in Martha Stewart’s Living magazine, and Welden’s Jewelry & Antiques. Now, a varied collection of shops, businesses and ethnic restaurants line the streets. One of Gulf Gate’s most novel business concepts is Your Culinary Place, situated behind a brightly painted white storefront on Superior Avenue. Continued on page 35

By Rachel Brown Hackney SarasotaNewsLeader.com The redevelopment of four parcels between Beach Road and Calle Miramar as the site of an eightstory, 170-room hotel would result in an extra 132 vehicle trips during the afternoon peak drive time, a consultant for the project team said in a March 18 document. Included among updated materials for the proposed hotel, which were submitted to Sarasota County staff in early May, the traffic analysis does say its estimate is a conservative one. For the purposes of the report, the Kimley-Horn consulting firm in Tampa pointed out that it used 2022 as the year the hotel would be completed. The firm’s conclusion, the report says, is that “the adjacent roadway segments are anticipated to have adequate capacity for the project.” Moreover, the report notes, “As the site does not propose residential units, an emergency hurricane evacuation analysis was not performed.” A separate document that Sarasota attorney William Merrill, of the Icard Merrill firm, submitted to county Planning Division staff asserts “Hotels are commercial uses, not residential uses, and will have no residents to evacuate when a storm event threatens. In fact, hotels are customarily one of the first businesses to close in the event of an imminent storm event and as a matter of course their guests are notified as far in advance as possible. With modern forecasting technology (which has improved significantly since 2010), the hotel and its guests, visitors and employees will be well aware of storm threats far in advance of any impacts or evacuation orders. Visitors will naturally cancel or change their travel plans and not head into or toward the storm.” The proposed hotel would be located in the northeast quadrant of Ocean Boulevard and Beach Road, the Kimley-Horn traffic analysis explains. The site allows up to six multi-family residential

units and up to 1,921 square feet of office space, the analysis notes. The property also is being utilized for up to 60 public parking spaces during the peak tourist season, the document adds. A three-level parking garage planned below the five floors of the hotel would have up to 223 spaces, 36 of which would be open to the public, the analysis says. “The access for the hotel is proposed through two driveways (one full access and one ingress only) along Calle Miramar,” it adds. A conservative estimate assumes that 50% of the 36 public parking spaces in the garage would result in driveway trips during the afternoon peak drive time, the report continues. “Therefore,” it says, “to provide a conservative analysis it was assumed 18 vehicles are exiting the garage during the p.m. peak hour.” The trip generation analysis for the hotel itself included the ancillary uses in the plans: a restaurant, bar, meeting rooms and retail space, the report adds. Kimley-Horn staff also took into consideration trips involving people wishing to use the “sunset viewing pool deck proposed within the hotel.” The firm estimated that only 30 such visitors would be allowed to join guests of the hotel for that activity, the report notes. “The 30 trips is a conservative estimate as guests may arrive or
depart prior to the p.m. peak-hour,” the report points out. “The sunset viewing deck is anticipated to generate [fewer] trips outside of peak season,” the report also says. Other facets of the traffic study Additionally, the report explains that Kimley-Horn analyzed Beach Road and Ocean Boulevard for expected traffic impacts of the hotel. Both two-lane roads, it notes, “are anticipated to operate with an acceptable level of service.” “Level of service” refers to how a driver perceives the flow of traffic on a road. The hotel would be expected to add 26 vehicles to Beach Road between Calle De La Siesta and Ocean Boulevard during the peak drive time, the report points out, for a total traffic volume of 529. For Ocean Boulevard between Beach Road and Higel Avenue, the report says, the hotel is expected to generate an extra 79 trips during peak drive time, for a total traffic volume of 534. Further, Kimley-Horn staff took into account turning movement traffic counts at five intersections during the period between 4 and 6 p.m. on Feb. 3, the report notes. However, because of concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the number of people driving on Siesta Key on that date, the report adds, the data Kimley-Horn obtained “[were] compared to a previous count” Continued on page 33

BEST SEAFOOD I HAVE EATEN IN MANY YEARS The comfortable, cozy environment and the display of fish available was very appealing. I like fresh, scratch cooking and this was absolutely beyond my expectations. The clam chowder was the best I have ever ordered and included a clam in the shell. The crab cake was amazing and made with crab and spices and not cluttered with breadcrumbs. I am gluten-free and this is the first crab cake I have ever been able to order. It was delicious. I will be in Sarasota in a few months and will return to enjoy more delectable seafood. Hats off to the chef and the outstanding staff!

In unanimously approving its June 8 Consent Agenda of routine business matters, the Sarasota County Commission agreed to pay Gator Grading & Paving LLC of Palmetto $156,954.60 for “miscellaneous concrete work” in the county parking lot under construction at 6647 S. Midnight Pass Rd., next door to Crescent Plaza. How it will be used, however, is yet to be determined. Will it be public? Or will it be leased to area businesses for employee parking? Almost exactly a year earlier, the commissioners formally approved the parking lot plans in an effort to provide more options for visitors and patrons of the business district in the vicinity of Stickney Point Road and Old Stickney Point Road. A June 8 county staff memo, provided to the board members in advance of the meeting, noted that the parking lot will have 43 spaces “in the south Siesta Key Village area.” The initiative includes removal of a portion of the existing asphalt
driveway and the concrete curb so “new pervious concrete pavement” can be put in place, along with a new 4-inch-thick concrete sidewalk, a 6-inch-thick concrete driveway and a concrete Americans with Disabilities Act parking pad. Barring any major weather issues, the memo added, the “construction should be substantially complete” by August. The money for the work will come out of county Capital Improvements Project funding set aside for the Operations Safety and Signalization Program. Although the original county vision for the parking lot was to serve the public, during the June 2020 public hearing on the proposal to create the facility the potential arose that it ultimately could be leased to business owners as a site where their employees could park. That would free up spaces closer to the businesses on Old Stickney Point Road, especially restaurants, business owners said.
Then-Commissioner Charles Hines also stressed, “The public access to the beach from this location is not good.” Residents of condominium associations on the west side of Midnight Pass Road had complained that members of the public routinely trespass on their property in trying to reach the shoreline. Neither Beach Access 12 nor 13 is close to the 6647 S. Midnight Pass Rd. parcel, speakers pointed out during public hearings on the project. The site originally was home to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office training facility. Even before the Sheriff’s Office vacated the property, commissioners Lana Maio and Nancy Detert talked about the land’s potential for a parking lot to supplement spaces in the “South Bridge” area. A county Public Utilities Department structure stands on the rear of the parcel, which is why the parking will be confined to the area closest to Midnight Pass Road.

Extraordinary sand sculptures greet military guests By Mike Cosentino Many see Memorial Day as the official kickoff to a summer of sand, surf, sunsets, and BBQs. That’s great, but those at Patriot’s Pier tend to see it as more of an opportunity for somber and grateful reflection and remembrance of those who paid for our freedoms with their service and their lives. Local sand sculptors Brian Wigglesworth and Andy Daily on May 31 created a soldier presenting our nation’s flag to the family of a fallen brother. Special thanks to these guys, who regularly donate their time and talents toward patriotic sculptures at the pier. Please join them and us on July 4. I’m excited to see what they come up with. Special thanks to Tim Smith for singing the “Star Spangled Banner,” and to Mike Bear for playing taps on his trumpet. We appreciate the added flavor of having our local friends share their talents in support of our
country and our troops. On June 9, we also hosted a group of Special Forces troops from Fort Bragg. Wigglesworth carved out “Iron Mike,” an iconic sculpture at Fort Bragg and their special forces emblem. Our boys came to meet and play golf with members of our business community. It’s part of an ongoing effort to facilitate their transition back to civilian life. Please join us at 10 Beach Rd. for our nightly tribute to honor the sacrifices of our military and service personnel in defending our country and our freedoms. It’s a great opportunity, especially in these contentious times, to set our partisan differences aside and celebrate our common ground as citizens of these United States of America. Our flag goes up daily to reveille at 8 a.m. and it’s lowered to taps nightly at sunset. The sunset ceremony can be seen nightly on our Facebook page, “Patriot’s Pier at Sunset Point.” Special Forces from Fort Bragg on June 9 were greeted at 10 Beach Rd. with this sand sculpture. Much more than just going with the flow Ambitious new owners at Coastal Flow double their number of artists, add social and educational opportunities By Jane Bartnett
Scientist, educator, arts advocate, and the 2014 Riverview High School and Sarasota County High School Teacher of the Year. And now, store owner. Yet, this lofty list barely begins to describe Katrin Rudge, the new co-owner of Coastal Flow Ocean Inspired Gifts & Decor on South Tamiami Trail. This spring, when Katrin and her husband, Jeff, took ownership of the one-year-old store, Rudge saw an opportunity to grow the young business and strengthen Coastal Flow’s support for the local art community while also continuing her commitment to educate the public about the importance of the environment in the Siesta Key region. Since taking over, the couple has doubled the number of artists whose work is sold at the store. “We now have close 70 local artists whose work can be purchased at Coastal Flow. We

redesigned the store to better showcase the beauty of the maritime world and expanded into another 1,000 square feet of space,” said Katrin Rudge while standing under a colorful photo of a sea turtle illuminated by an overhead light. Artists’ work on display at the store depicts sea creatures both real and mythical, water, sand, and
all things coastal. “We want Coastal Flow to be a place where we can showcase the talents of area artists who work in glass, oil paint, watercolor, metal, shells, clay, wood, leather and even recycled CDs that shimmer like diamonds,” Rudge said proudly. Award-winning Sarasota-area artists whose works are on display are often in the store speaking
with customers about their work and the complex manor in which some of the art itself is created. “Many of our artists work in multiple mediums,” Rudge noted. “They are skilled craftsmen as well as artists and they’ve spent years honing their talents.” One of the newest talents to join Coastal Flow is Matthew Davis. A painter and multi-media artist, his
work is a departure from the shop’s traditional offerings. Davis’ beach-themed, handpainted, made-to-order custom leather designs are available as leather jackets, coats, leather skirts, dresses, bags and vests. A popular item at the store, his custom designs can also be painted on jean jackets. “Each of these artists is a small business unto themselves,” said Jeff Rudge, who also manages his own business, Just Ask Jeff Home Improvement Services, LLC., connecting community association managers to qualified vendors. “As entrepreneurs we understand what it takes to run a small business and we’re here to provide these artists with a place to sell their work. When our customers purchase these beautiful works of art that are priced at a variety of price points, they benefit the local artistic community and help the local economy as well.” Since opening in March of 2020, Coastal Flow has seen steady growth. “Although it’s now summertime, thanks to social media and word of mouth we’re seeing a strong increase in traffic,” said Katrin Rudge. “Some of our customers are coming from far away to see what we have in store and we’re building on the success of the store’s first year. The store is constantly evolving.” In the months ahead, the Rudges hope to offer art classes that would be given by artists whose work is on display at the store. Katrin is also developing plans for a meeting space where she and other scientists can share their knowledge of the marine world, along with artists who could discuss their coastal art. Adding art pieces created from metal for outside displays and whimsical painted mailboxes are also on her wish list for the future. “Coastal art in a variety of styles is one way of educating people about our waters and the importance of keeping plastic out of the oceans,” said Katrin Rudge. Furthermore, the store’s Sip ’n Shop Meet the Artists evenings, featuring complimentary beer and wine, are scheduled for the second Thursday of each month, from 5 to 7 p.m. Upcoming dates are: July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 9, Oct. 14, Nov. 11, and Dec. 9. Coastal Flow’s address is 7216 S. Tamiami Tr. In August, when school begins, Katrin Rudge,, who holds a master’s degree in Marine Estuarine Environmental Sciences from the University of Maryland and served as a research assistant for the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, will return to her Riverside High School classroom by day. In the afternoon and on the weekends, she’ll join her husband Jeff and the artists at the store.

Sheriff’s Report May 18 theft A kayak and oar were stolen from the victim’s dock on the canal. There were no reported witnesses and it is unknown whether the crime was committed by boat or someone on the roadway. May 22 grand theft The complainant reported that his unlocked bicycle was stolen from underneath his condominium unit. Although his wife’s bicycle was in the same location, only his was taken. May 27 theft A woman filed a theft report after her unattended red Betty Boop bag was stolen from the beach, along with everything inside the bag including several bank cards, a driver’s license and cash. May 29 battery An officer patrolling a beach access observed two women in a physical fight on the sidewalk. Both parties were separated and refused medical assistance, although one subject had swelling to the face and abrasions to the knees and the other had swelling to the face. May 31 battery An officer was called to the beach in regard to a battery complaint and shortly made contact with the victim, who had a black eye and appeared to be intoxicated. He claimed to have been struck by a man who was sitting a short distance down the beach. The man stated that he was sitting on the beach when the complainant approached him and asked to share his alcoholic beverages. When the complainant was denied the alcohol, he swung his fist at the man but failed to injure him. As a method of self-defense, the man struck back. It was concluded that both parties were acting in self-defense, and no charges were filed. May 31 stolen vehicle The victim advised an officer that she parked her vehicle in the parking lot of Siesta Beach and returned several hours later to find her vehicle missing. She stated that while she had both sets of car keys when she was on the beach, someone must have stolen them from her bag when she and her boyfriend were swimming in the ocean. Her boyfriend advised that his iPhone, debit card, and driver’s license were missing as well, and they were in the same backpack as the car keys. June 1 burglary The victim contacted law enforcement when his security video system alerted him of motion while he was away from his home. When he returned, he found about $4,150 worth of items to be missing from his safe room and bedroom, including a pump action shotgun, a rifle scope, an automatic knife, and three unidentified rifles. He also observed that his attic door outside had been damaged and it appeared that the suspect climbed through it to the pantry, then through the pantry to the bedroom and safe room. The victim noted that he had hired a handyman a few months prior to the incident, and it looked like the suspect had made a duplicate key to access the safe room. An officer contacted the handyman, who denied having a connection to the crime and who stated he was working in Punta Gorda at the time of the incident. Investigation continues. June 4 grand theft An officer responded when a man called in reference to his guitar being stolen. He advised that he left the guitar, valued at about $1,750, on the side of the road for approximately 10 minutes while he confirmed the location of a wedding that he was supposed to attend on the beach. When he came back, the guitar was missing. Nobody saw anyone take the guitar and there was no security footage nearby.

Ruling goes against Cosentino, who now eyes highest court By Rachel Brown Hackney SarasotaNewsLeader.com Almost exactly five years after he filed suit against Sarasota County over its vacation of a 373-foot-long segment of North Beach Road, Siesta Key resident Michael Cosentino lost his case in a unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal. In a June 11 opinion, Judge Susan H. Rothstein-Youakim wrote that the court found all of the arguments that Cosentino and his nonprofit organization, Reopen Beach Road, put forth to be meritless, except for one. That regarded the timing of the formal notice the county published about the road vacation. Nonetheless, she pointed out, “The record indisputably establishes that Cosentino has been afforded ample opportunity to participate and be heard,” and he never made
an allegation to the contrary. Along with allowing the road vacation to stand, the ruling means that two Sarasota County Charter amendments that Cosentino wrote are invalid. They won passage during the November 2018 General Election. In October 2018, 12th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Hunter Carroll issued the opinion in the county’s favor in regard to that portion of the case. One amendment forbid the county from vacating any segment of road that had so much as a view of the water. The other called for the county to rescind the road vacation or to reacquire the vacated section of North Beach Road. In his ruling, Carroll wrote, “In considering a legal challenge to charter amendments such as these, courts presume the
amendments to be valid and reasonably construe them to be valid, if possible. If, however, an amendment is unconstitutional, courts must strike the offending amendment even though it means the will of the majority of the electors who voted on the issue cannot be carried out. That is the situation here.” During April 13 oral arguments, Cosentino admitted to the Second District Court of Appeal judges “I knew that [the amendments] were unconstitutional when I wrote them.” He has said he saw them as an alternative means of achieving his goal of reopening all of North Beach Road to traffic, along with preventing a similar road vacation in the future. Asked to comment on Court of Appeal opinion, Cosentino wrote
“In short, the rulings are just too devastating to Florida’s future and the Community Planning Act for me to stop. … Florida’s Supreme Court has always been the goal.” In his complaint, Cosentino formally alleged that the Sarasota County Commission violated Chapter 163.3161 of the Florida Statutes, which is called the Community Planning Act. Section 6 of that law says “It is the intent of this act that adopted comprehensive plans shall have the legal status set out in this act and that no public or private development shall be permitted except in conformity with comprehensive plans, or elements or portions thereof, prepared and adopted in conformity with this act.” When Cosentino filed his original suit against the county

Environmental Policy 1.1.13 said at that time “The County shall not vacate road segments on waterfronts along any creek, river, lake, bay or Gulf access point and shall encourage right-of-way use of these areas for coastal beach and bay access.” “Simply put,” he added in his statement about the June 11 decision, “there is no legal basis in law or fact that would allow any court to rule against me and the people of Sarasota.” What are Cosentino’s chances of reaching Florida’s highest court? Calling all runners, young an old alike A tradition cherished by families has returned in the form of the Kids Summer Beach Run By John Morton It was just an ordinary Tuesday evening on Siesta Beach in 2009 when Kristy Ochsendorf saw a blur of color and giggles go by. She noticed it was a pack of runners, including kids and parents, and she just so happened to have her running shoes in tow. “I said, ‘Hey, I like to run.’ So, I just joined them,” she said of what is the celebrated summertime beach run for kids that, after a oneyear COVID-19 hiatus, takes place every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. through the end of July. So, she crashed the Beach Summer Kids Run? “Yeah, I guess I did,” she said with a laugh. Soon fitting in perfectly, Ochsendorf was running it with new baby Jessie strapped to her chest two years later. The next year, they graduated to stroller status. This summer, 9-year-old Jessie will once again be making the trek on her own. Sister Lyla, 7, will join her in what is now an outright family tradition. “It’s such a fantastic opportunity for so many families to unite. The social benefits are just as important as the exercise,” said Ochsendorf, whose family now lives on Siesta Key. “The girls really missed having it last year.” The 1-mile event, going from Siesta Beach’s lifeguard towers to the Point of Rocks and back, is co-sponsored by Sarasota County and the Manasota Track Club. Many kids-run participants have become members on the club. Diehard runner Corey Peyerk of Bradenton is one of them. Like Ochsendorf, he also got his
infant daughter, Kennedy, involved straight from the crib. In fact, he liked the running bond with her so much that they actually entered semi-competitive races as a pair where Peyerk would sprint with Kennedy in a stroller. On a lighter note, they once won the Lakewood Ranch Beer Belly 5K race with Kennedy on wheels. “Technically, she won that race. She crossed the finish line before I did,” Peyerk said. “She got a medal for that.” This summer, he’ll have not only Kennedy, now 4, running on the beach, but 1-year-old sister Riley and five-week-old brother Brady – again, in stroller form. “It will be so fun to be out there,” he said of the beach run. “Everyone knows Kennedy.” Meanwhile, the event was so meaningful to Lily Cutler that it led her to joining her middle school track team in Nokomis. Her father, David, discovered the race while living in Lakewood Ranch in 2015 and not only got Lily and son Xavier involved, but his whole neighborhood. “We’d come down in trucks full of kids, in vans full of kids,” David Cutler said, “and all of us made so many more friends. The camaraderie is strong.” A big perk is the fact Cutler and his kids even have fans who cheer them on. “My parents have a place on the Key on the race route. They’ll set up chairs and cheer us on,” he said. Register before the run in person at Siesta Beach. It is free and for those 18 and younger.

A double dose of marine delight By Madeline Zerega
I
n early June, my mom surprised us by purchasing tickets for the Morning Rounds tour at the Marine Mammal Center of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota. We had previously visited the aquarium, but were excited to get to see “behind the scenes” at the marine mammal center. The visit was a splash hit with our whole family! The tour involved observing the daily morning routines of the sea animals and the staff, from feeding time to tank cleaning. We even had the opportunity to feed the fish and one of the turtles (who had a healthy after-breakfast lettuce snack). In addition to seeing beautiful creatures such as sea turtles and manatees, we also learned their individual stories and how they ended up at Mote. We learned about the backgrounds and job duties of some of the staff and interns. Another highlight of the morning was witnessing a training session for the three otters Mote is currently housing. Unlike some other aquariums, Mote only keeps animals in its facilities that cannot safely be returned to the wild. For example, if an animal cannot catch its own food or is completely blind, keeping the animal in a rescue center like Mote is in the animal’s best interest. The incredible staff at Mote are all devoted to their jobs and are extremely passionate about supporting wildlife. Dana Henderson, school programs coordinator, was our excellent, knowledgeable guide during the tour. As Dana explained, “Our main goal at Mote is sustainability and conservation of oceans. By giving guests the opportunity to see what we do and go behind the scenes, they are able to contribute to our mission.” Taking a visit to Mote is not only an educational activity to enjoy with family and friends, but it is an experience that helps make a positive impact on our environment.

Montego, one of the sea turtles in permanent residence at Mote, loves socializing with people. She appeared in the window of her tank just to say hello when approached. (photo by Madeline Zerega)
The day after our tour, we had the exciting chance to see Mote staff in action again when we encountered approximately 13 manatees congregated near the shore of Lido Key in Sarasota Bay. Mote staff were on site, after being alerted by other staff monitoring sea turtle nests in the area. Led by Christina Nau, they were part of a team who documents manatees in the area, and they used the opportunity to photograph the mammals and record information at close range. Scientists can identify individual manatees by the boatstrike scars and injuries on their bodies. They indicated that the manatees were gathered near shore together because it is mating season. The scientists answered questions, but politely reminded onlookers to keep an appropriate
distance and not disturb the mammals. When the manatees moved on, they thrilled the onlookers by swimming together in a big herd between the shore and the boats anchored nearby. Since manatees are mostly solitary, the sight of so many congregating and then swimming away together was a glimpse into the unexpected wonders of the natural world. After seeing its staff at work on our tour of the Marine Mammal Center and at the chance manatee sighting, I realize that we are fortunate to have a neighbor like Mote working tirelessly to protect our coastal and ocean communities.
While the osprey bears a strong resemblance to several kinds of hawks, it is actually classified in its own separate family as a fish hawk. The osprey is the only North American hawk whose diet is almost exclusively live fish, both freshwater and saltwater. It takes lots of protein (rich in Omega-3 fatty acids) to fuel the exploits of this large raptor,
weighing 2 to 4 pounds with a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet! The osprey is commonly seen circling high over shallow water with its keen eye on supper below. Just before diving feet-first, the airborne hunter hovers almost motionlessly as the juvenile in this picture demonstrates. Strong talons secure a fish measuring up to 12 inches while powerful wingbeats raise the submerged bird with its reluctant “passenger” above the water’s surface. To reduce wind resistance and conserve energy for the flight home, the osprey orients the fish head-first in its talons, riding it like a surfboard over Siesta Key. Cowabunga! Blooming this month: Bamboo
(Madeline Zerega is a 10th grader with a passion for environmental conservation.)

Bamboo (above, left) has a bad reputation with gardeners. Some kinds of bamboo spread aggressively, but there are some that do not. There are actually two groups of bamboos: runners and clumpers. Running bamboos don’t stay in one place, but clumping bamboos grow only a few inches wider each year. Clumping bamboo makes an excellent visual screen and sound barrier, all without endangering the neighborhood. South Floridians have a large and diverse group of bamboo to choose from, but some types thrive in north Florida as well. Plant your bamboo in full or part sun. Bamboo will tolerate a wide variety of soil types, but for best growth water and fertilize yours on a regular schedule, and don’t forget to mulch. Bamboo is actually a fastgrowing grass and not a tree, as some call it. The speedy rate
of growth makes it a popular resource for all sorts of items. Bamboo is used to create flooring, bed sheets, towels, and other fabrics. Outside, you can create fencing, trellises, or even water features. If you’re in search of something unique that will add a special touch to your landscape, or a classy dash of style in your home, black bamboo (above, right) will not disappoint. It’s easy to grow: black bamboo will grow as much as 10 to 12 feet a year, ultimately reaching 25 feet in stature. It’s easy to tame, so you can trim it to the height you desire. Stop by the Sarasota Garden Club during the week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and check out the black bamboo in the Quite Garden, one of the 14 gardens at 1131 Boulevard of the Arts. Submitted by CJ Danna, Sarasota Garden Club.

Despite local objections to short-term rentals, county has yet to deliver large fine The Siesta Key Association (SKA) is pursuing a new effort to try to persuade the Sarasota County Commission to regulate “hotel houses” on the Key, yet no stiff fines have been issued in relation to the current county ordinance that governs short-term vacation rentals. On Feb. 26, 2019, the County Commission unanimously approved an amendment to the County Code that imposes a fine as high as $5,000 for violations of the rental laws in districts zoned for single-family homes.
The ordinance makes it illegal to rent such a house more than once every 30 days. Matt Osterhoudt, director of the county’s Planning and Development Services Department, told SKA members on Jan. 10, 2019 that the $5,000 fine could be applied, for example, in situations when loud noise late at night at illegally rented homes proves disruptive to neighbors. The code enforcement amendment, he explained, was proposed on the basis of language in the Florida Statutes.
The fine previously could not exceed $250 per day for a first violation and $500 per day for a repeat violation of the county regulations handled by the Code Enforcement Division. A special magistrate — a court official who presides over code enforcement hearings — would have to find a violation “to be irreparable or irreversible in nature” to impose a $5,000 fine, the 2019 amendment says. In a June 1 email, Bethany Higgins, a
public records specialist, wrote that Zoning Code Enforcement staff members told her that they were not aware of any special magistrate hearings in which a $5,000 judgment was imposed regarding an illegal, short-term vacation rental case. The SKA has asked its members to let the directors know about any “hotel houses” in their neighborhoods. As SKA director Joyce Kouba explained during the nonprofit’s May 6 meeting, a hotel house is a residence designed to sleep 12 to 20 or so people.
Don’t let investments go on vacation Sarasota Local Brings Experience & Trust to Siesta Key
Now that we’ve gained at least some space from the COVID-19 pandemic, summer travel is heating up. But while you might be eager to hit the road, you won’t want your investments to take a vacation – you need them to work hard for you consistently. But how can you make this happen?
employer-sponsored plan, you’re investing for one specific, long-term goal: a comfortable retirement. While you can tap into these accounts for other purposes – though doing so might incur immediate taxes and penalties – they are designed to provide you with income during your retirement years. Similarly, you may have other investments for other purposes, such as a 529 education savings plan. Here’s the key point: Goals-based investing, by its nature, can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended.
Here are some ideas: • Know your destination. “If you don’t know where you want to go, then it doesn’t matter which path you take.” This bit of wisdom, paraphrased from the classic children’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, may be appropriate for, say, hikers exploring a new landscape. But as an investor, it matters a great deal which path you take. If you only dabble in investing, occasionally putting some money into one investment or another, it will be difficult to build a portfolio that’s consistently working in your best interest. It’s important to create a long-term investment strategy based on where you want to go in

life – that is, how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on. • Match goals with investments. Some investments are designed to achieve certain goals. To illustrate: When you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar
• Invest for growth. Ideally, hard work produces results, and one of the main results you want from your investments is growth – that is, you want your investments to appreciate in value so they can eventually help you meet your goals. But if you are overconcentrated in vehicles such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and government securities, you may end up lowering your growth potential. That’s not to
say that CDs and Treasury bills are in some sense “lazy.” They can provide you with income and help you reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. But to achieve most of your goals, you’ll need a reasonable number of growthoriented investments working for you, with the exact percentage based on your needs and life stages. • Check your progress. How else can you ensure your investments aren’t just taking it easy? By checking up on them. If you follow a buy-and-hold strategy, your portfolio shouldn’t require many changes if it already reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Too much buying and selling could jeopardize your ability to follow a consistent, long-term strategy. However, “buy and hold” doesn’t mean “buy and forget.” By reviewing your portfolio at least once a year, you can determine if your investments are performing as they should. If they’re not working for you as you’d like, you may need to make some changes.

was such a simple concept, and yet it was completely opposite to what I had always believed to be true. It’s amazing how many times in our life our entire way of thinking and perspective can change in just a moment if we are open to looking at things from a slightly different angle. This truth is very simple. How could I have missed it? Could it be for me because I was in the fitness and health industry for decades helping others focus on healing their bodies and getting their physical form stronger? Or perhaps it was because as a child this truth couldn’t have been further away from what I had learned. The body in fact was always the center of attention. How did one look? How did one measure up and compare to that of a peer? What was he/ she wearing? What was the flaw staring back at me in the mirror on this day? Or on this day would the world smile back at me differently because I had on a new pink dress? Sadly, the focus was not on who I truly was but rather the physical image that was presented to the world. I think many can relate. However, I now rejoice in teaching a new truth. Indeed, the body is important for it is the vessel that we get to enjoy and experience life in. We must take care of and appreciate the body we have been loaned for a while during our stay here on earth. However, what the mirror and society reflect back
to us must stop being our sole focus. We have misplaced our attention. We have a body, but we are not our body. We are so much more. But because the physical eyes do not perceive more, it is clearly absent from our view. When I read this meme, I let it percolate in my mind as to the relevance it had on myself and on others. It only took a moment for my true self to accept and agree upon it, and then slowly a shift in my perception followed. Yes, I realized there was so much more than meets the eye. We are souls! We are perfect in every way as we are, regardless the reflection that glares back at us after our early morning rise. Have we all missed this truth? Or, have we just forgotten it? When we are children we clearly remember! Children don’t judge their bodies, or the form of another. No! They just enjoy them, use them and love them. They are gleeful and joyful in every moment, never even looking at a mirror without being told to! They know and believe they are special just the way they are. And then one

hysterically at the word “toot,” and to smile at a stranger for no reason. We lose our curiosity for the ant that walks in between the side walk cracks, and we no longer watch with awe at the squirrel as he infinitely chases his brother along the tree branches just for fun. We simply forget. I think it is time to remember. We are beautiful souls that come here for a purpose! We are to enjoy our life while we are present and live in reverence and awe for all creation. We are here to love one another without conditions and to see perfectness in every stranger. We are here to reflect the love of the spirit, not the judgement of our ego. So, let this be a reminder to us all that we need to call back to our mind that we are souls, made from the energy of love and filled with light. May we remember and begin to act from this place of truth in every affair. May we treat our body with love, and also every person we meet. And may we always do our best to take care of the body, move it, nourish it, but never forget it is the soul that the body houses that needs to be tended to the most and celebrated rather than neglected! A keepsake with extra meaning ‘The ABCs of Siesta Key’ illustrated children’s book will be available in October By Hannah Wallace This spring, leaders at the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce were brainstorming ways to raise funds not involving “tents and events,” Ann Frescura, the chamber’s executive director, said. For longtime Siesta Key artist Shawn McLoughlin, the resulting project was a form of divine intervention. In April, the chamber’s board of directors green-lit a new promotion and fund-raising project: a Siesta-themed children’s picture book called “The ABCs of Siesta Key.” The book was to feature illustrations of things “that are specific to the key, not Florida in general,” said Frescura. “We loved the idea of having the talent of our favorite local artist available, so we said ‘Let’s call Shawn and see what he says,’” she said. “We were so happy he was excited about it.” Just seven months prior, McLoughlin, a 1975 graduate of the Ringling College of Art and Design, had been diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer. He’d been relying on his deeply held faith throughout his recovery, and he saw this new commission as an opportunity to once again channel his faith through his artwork. “I was told that one of the keys to rebounding from cancer is to find a purpose for living,” said McLoughlin. “‘The ABCs of Siesta Key’ book is a gift from God.” The chamber quickly secured 20 sponsors at $500 each and will partner with Siesta’s Coastal Printing to produce an initial run of 1,000 books in October. In addition to a release party
McLoughlin
and book signing, Frescura plans for the books to be available at November’s Crystal Classic. The books will be priced at $14.95 each. “We want it to be a high-quality keepsake for tourists and residents alike,” said Frescura. McLoughlin has spent the spring and summer developing ideas. Starting with a list of suggested topics from A to Z provided by the chamber, McLoughlin takes photos and creates sketches of a variety of locations throughout the key. “This would include the most visible scenes like the beaches and beach life, and also the not-so-visible side of Siesta Key, like beautiful backyard gardens and interesting architectural detail,” he said. He already loves the first page: A is for alphabet, artist and artwork. The first painting shows a little boy who’s just completed writing the alphabet in the wet sand. There are snowy plovers and wave wash. “The boy is not distracted from his work,” explained McLoughlin. “He is apparently left-handed, and his finger is still in the channel of the last piece of the Z.” Exactly one year after the artist’s cancer diagnosis, McLoughlin said his lab results look good, his weight is improving, and he’s seeing a slow but steady improvement in his health. Frescura and the chamber is eagerly awaiting the final artwork, set to be completed by the end of September. The members have no doubts about its quality. “Shawn’s expertise and his talent will shine through,” said Frescura. “We’re going to be very proud of this project.”
Help light the fuse on the 4th Siesta Key’s fireworks show is always spectacular, but this year it’s going to be euphoric. Being that it’s our first civic gathering since COVID-19 arrived will of course make it more meaningful than usual. Furthermore, it’s the island’s 30th installment of having a blast above the beach. This, folks, will be a party. However, as of June 22, the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce was about $5,000 shy of its minimum needs in order to pay for the fireworks show. The chamber reports that a few sponsors couldn’t participate this year, which is a common result of the pandemic. Still, a full show will go on. Meanwhile, the chamber will likely have to dip into its reserves to cover the balance. With that in mind, we encourage individuals to help with a donation of $100. Whether you are a local or a visitor, every dollar is going to help. The chamber office is located in the Village at 5114 Ocean Blvd. and its hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Checks should be made payable to the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce. Knowing how good this show is going to feel for us all, those who step up and contribute will surely feel they are getting a real bang for their buck. -- John Morton

Siesta Key Oyster Bar, or “SKOB” as the locals call it, is the hangout with the laid-back, beachy atmosphere that will get you right into the Island Spirit. One of the things that set SKOB apart from the other restaurants in Siesta Key Village is that we have some of the best food on the Key.
Resident hopes boaters will be aware of baby manatee in Grand Canal On May 29 Jean Cannon, director of the Siesta Key Association, sent out an email alert about the fact that a baby manatee had been seen in the Grand Canal, which runs through the area southeast of the Village. She wanted to spread the news, with hope that boaters and those on other types of watercraft would watch out for the mammal. Cannon is among Siesta residents who have pointed to the high mortality rate this year for manatees in Florida, which is all the more reason they hope the calf in the Grand Canal

The civic-minded Siesta Key Association is accustomed to initiatives that help keep the public beach clean, but it had to react to a unexpected dirty little trick in early June. On Facebook, someone replicated the Sarasota County page and said the “east section” of Siesta Beach would be “clothing optional” on June 9. The post even included a naked man superimposed on a photo showing a Siesta Beach lifeguard tower in the distance. The association made its own post, making it clear that it was a joke and the county has no nude beaches. Still, the fake post drew about 5,000 comments, both pro-nudity and anti-nudity.

“Beach Dig” -- Sarasota resident Lou Gristwood digs out a spike in a friendly volleyball game on Siesta Beach. Gristwood has played in many “Dig The Beach” volleyball tournaments, competing in men’s AA or AAA divisions. He moved here from Syracuse in 2008.
“Father/Son Bonding” -- First-time Siesta Beach visitors Brian and his son Billy Gavin of Michigan enjoy the challenge of shoreline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Between them they reeled in about seven fish in an hour -- a catfish and six whiting. They both said they were overwhelmed by the beauty of Siesta Beach.
“Relaxed” -- BFFs Debra Burgess of Huntington Beach, California (left) and Jennifer Stueber of Sarasota shake off the job stress on Siesta Beach. They became great friends in 1998 while working for the same company. Debra is a compliance analyst for a mortgage company and Jennifer works remotely as a business analyst for an insurance company in Boston. First-time visitor Debra commented, “I can’t believe how soft the sand is, it’s like powder.”
“Sister Act” --- Sisters (from left) Diana Naas of Ohio, Kalyn McEwan of Charlotte, and Karen Rost of Ohio catch up with each other on Siesta Beach. The family’s five sisters try to meet in four places each year on what they call a “Sisters Trip.” The other two sisters were arriving overnight. This trip is their second this year. Diana said, “I’ve been to beaches all over the world and this is the best beach ever, bar none.” “Keeping It Clean” -- Siesta Beach Parks and Recreation staffer Joe heads out to change-out trash-can bags. Keeping the beach clean is just one of many tasks he is called upon to accomplish. Thousands of visitors comment about how clean Siesta Beach is kept every year. Joe and other park staffers help keep it that way.
“Fully Focused” -- 17-year-old Ellie of Cape Coral practices her volleyball skills on Siesta Beach. After high school graduation she wants to get her aestheticians license to work as a professional in a spa, salon or medical facility. They typically perform a variety of duties, including facials, waxes, massages and chemical peels. You’ll often find her partying with her friends at one of her favorite beaches: Venice, Fort Myers or Siesta Beach.
“Beach Tips” -- First-time visitor Trayvon Smith of Indianapolis catches a football using his tiptoes and fingertips along the shoreline of Siesta Beach. He was invited down for the week to stay with some friends who work at Gilligan’s in Siesta Village. One of their aunts own a beach house here.
“Siesta Sheller” -- Evy, 5, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, was busy loading her red bucket with small shells at the water’s edge. Siesta Beach may be the No. 1 kid-friendly beach in the world because the water deepens so gradually. Mom said her greatest joy back in Maryland is regularly attending ninja classes taught by an Olympic athlete.
“Smiles on Siesta” -- From left, Rachel Hooks, Dominic Rodriguez, Lauryn Galloway, and Tevin Coleman, all of the Brandon/Tampa area, were just starting their day on Siesta Beach to celebrate Tevin’s 24th birthday. They were all happy to report that they had remained COVID-19-free. Interestingly, when asked what they enjoyed most about Siesta Beach. they unanimously reported “The free parking.”
“Shoreline Walk” -- Mother and daughter Connie Cox of of Dayton, Ohio and Melanie Cox of Charlotte enjoy a relaxing stroll along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. They met here to vacation in the condo of a family member. Melanie is in e-commerce sales and they both love the calm water and white sands of Siesta Beach.

Flash! Crash! Help Your Dog Chill Out When Summer Goes Boom
Paw Pals
Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect We’ve been waiting for it, and summer is almost here! Our dogs, though? They may not be quite as excited for sun and fun. That’s because summer is the season for two experiences that can cause serious anxiety for our furry friends: thunderstorms and fireworks. And if you think about it from a dog’s perspective, they’ve got good reasons to be upset. The clap of thunder, the boom of fireworks, and the sudden flashes of light all come without warning, no understanding as to what’s caused them, and no explanation that they aren’t a dangerous threat. That’s why during summer storms and celebrations alike, you may see dogs shaking, pacing, panting or making themselves scarce. But since we can’t keep Mother Nature from doing her thing and there’s no stopping our annual fireworks spectaculars, how can we calm our pups and make them feel safe under the circumstances? Here are a few ideas to help your pup through tough times. Calming Your Canine Whether it’s thunderstorms, fireworks or both that rock your dog’s world, there are things you can do to prepare in advance. The best time to start is out of season when thunderstorms and fireworks are less likely to occur. So, if you’re reading this now, you may want to make a mental note to revisit some of these approaches come fall. Why? Because methods like systematic desensitization and counter conditioning take a little time to nurture positive behavioral responses. For now, though, there are still a few things you can do to make your pup more comfortable this summer. Preparing in Advance Before the storms arrive and the fireworks pop, ensure your dog has a safe, comforting place to which to escape. A crate, a bed, or a specific room of the house with familiar, soothing accompaniments like blankets, pillows, toys and treats can go a long way to taking the edge off. If indoors, closing
the windows and drawing the shades can also make a big difference. Even turning on a fan, TV or sound machine to create white noise can help mask the crashes and booms outside. Oh, and make sure they’ve got a full belly and are adequately hydrated because you may not see them again until the show is over. Another critical thing to keep in mind if your dog is skittish about these occurrences: You should definitely plan to keep them inside or secure in the yard particularly
levels. Anxiety wraps like T-shirts or vests can simulate the feel of a hug on the torso, creating a calming effect similar to that of swaddling an infant. Synthetic pheromones can remind dogs of happier times when they were just a pup with their nursing mother. You may even consider CBD products available in oils, gels and soft chews to help calm your canine. As always, if you need help deciding on which products might work best for you and your dog, don’t hesitate to tap into the knowledge of your local independent pet retailer. By employing all or just a few of these methods, you can help reduce the anxiety of thunderstorms and fireworks to make summer more fun and less “run!” for your best friend.
Meet Tom
A part-time canine resident, Tom says he prefers the white sand of Siesta Key to the snow any day. Tom, whose full name is Tom Brady, is a mini labradoodle who accompanies his human at the University of Connecticut during the school year. When not in school Tom loves the Siesta sunshine, strolling the village and swimming at Bird Key Beach. He loves when the school semester ends and he can return home!
around the Fourth of July. Independence Day is widely believed to be the day when the highest number of dogs find their own independence … by running away. So, get that walk in early, and get your dog an ID tag or microchip just in case they get loose on or around the 4th. Distractions and Tools Aid Relief In addition to using the aforementioned tips to keep your pups as protected from anxiety as possible during storms and celebrations, resist the urge to console them as this can reinforce their fearful behavior. Instead, find something to distract them from the commotion outside. Playing fetch, brushing their hair, or giving them a bone to while away the hours can help them stay busy and relaxed. There are also a number of terrific tools that can help reduce your dog’s stress

From wine glass assault to reversing comedy’s hault Only in Sarasota ...
A
n
attempted carjacking in Sarasota recently featured an unusual instrument of persuasion: a wine glass, lifted from an outdoor dining table at a downtown restaurant, smashed and then used to threaten a driver who was ordered by the upwardly mobile, bike-riding assailant to turn over the keys to his sports car. The man refused, instead throwing the keys into the middle of the street, spooking the perp who fled the scene as he had arrived: on his bike. He was quickly tracked down by police (so glad they haven’t been defunded yet, no?) who escorted the would-be social climber to one of Sarasota’s less than luxurious 1-star accommodations: The SPD Grand on Ringling Boulevard.
Laugh of the Day ...
Two mice were shooting the breeze. The first says to the second: “Have you gotten your Covid shot yet?” Second mouse’s reply: “No, I’m waiting for them to finish the human trials.”
And speaking of laughter ...
Enter Les McCurdy who recently announced the re-opening of his eponymously named comedy club downtown. Based on early results, he expects to tap into a large audience of folks looking to laugh off the experience of being under virtual house arrest for the past year-plus. McCurdy told WFLA news recently, “We’re probably going to do twice as many patrons as we even hoped we were going to do, so it really goes to show us that people are ready and comfortable.”
Double, Double, Toil and Trouble ...
... Could it be a real estate bubble?” That’s the question a lot of folks are asking around town lately as they ponder if and when housing prices will come crashing back to earth as they did after the last bubble popped back in 2008. Back then prices in the area had actually peaked in the spring and summer of 2006 when the median price of a home in the Sarasota/ Manatee market reached a high of $353,000. The median price then fell to $153,700 by May of 2011, according to figures the Florida Association of Realtors reported at that time as the housing market was mired in the depths of what has come to be known as the Great
Recession. Interestingly, median prices today are just now back to levels last seen during that 2006 peak with the current median for Sarasota County reaching $380,000 last month with Manatee not far behind. So, I guess all the folks back then who were saying “no worries, the market will come back...” were right. Kind of... Because really, did anyone expect it would take 10 years to get there? Something to keep in mind when listening to the advice of realtors, TV pundits and, yes, even newspaper columnists. There is one key red flag that was flying high back in 2006 at the last top that’s missing now, however. It concerns inventory. In February of 2006 the number of homes for sale locally was way up and moving higher. Way higher: 7,000 homes for sale by April of 2006, an 83-week supply! Compare that to today’s supply: now just several weeks … a mere 913 single family homes for sale in Sarasota and Manatee counties, according to Multiple Listing Service data as reported on June 11. Add in an influx of deep-pocket investors and syndicates (like Black Rock) and affluent expatriate lockdown refugees from high-tax states with heavy-handed, controlfreak governors and legislatures (like New York, Michigan, New Jersey and California) and the real
estate landscape in these parts looks to be significantly less dire than it did back in 2006. But please, don’t take my word for it. If you’re in the market to buy or sell today, do your own research. And that’s good general advice these days when it comes to just about anything you see, hear or read in the media.
Nun’s Habit Seals her Fate ...
Leading by example wasn’t in the cards for an L.A. nun who carried a habit beyond the one topping off her religious vestments. It seems she liked to gamble, and not with much luck it would appear. Her losses totaled $835,000 in funds she allegedly embezzled from St. James Catholic School in Los Angeles where she served as principal. You might say the betting odds for getting away with her larceny were long from the start ... I mean even though she skated by for almost 10 years here on this mortal plane, how was she planning to explain away her transgression when she returned to the home office at the end of her earthly run (assuming the particular elevator she boarded didn’t move in the opposite direction)? “Without the knowledge and authorization of St. James School or the administration, defendant Sister Kreuperused diverted funds … to pay for expenses that the (religious) order would not have
approved, much less paid for, including large gambling expenses incurred at casinos and certain credit card charges,” according to her indictment documents. I mean, lying to the boss is never a good idea, but it’s an especially bad bet when that boss is all knowing and all seeing.
Clyde Butcher Summer Warehouse Sale Returns
Acclaimed nature photographer and local treasure Clyde Butcher has announced the return of his annual summer warehouse sale to be held July 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at his Venice Studio, 237 Warfield Ave., in Venice. Last year’s sale was a virtual event due to the pandemic. “Last summer we cleaned, sorted and organized our studio during the downtime due to the pandemic. In the process we found all kinds of things we had tucked away or thought we had sold,” Butcher wrote in a recent message to his followers. ... Worth the trip, even if it’s just to take in some of the startlingly rich and detailed large format photographs on display that capture the grandeur of southwest Florida and beyond as seen through Butcher’s unique lens, which somehow manages to capture both the objective and subjective essence of his subjects.

What’s new ... on Siesta Key
Welcome to the big show
From fades to shaves, and all things in between, new hair stylist brings unique techniques to Village By John Morton He stands at an imposing 6-foot-2 and 270 pounds, but David Brown’s nickname of “Big Show” comes from him having a soft touch. “I got it when I was in barber school. I shaved my hair really short and created a bunch of intricate lines in it, making a cool design,” Brown said. “I guess they thought I was putting on a show.” Soon, he was churning out creations as challenging as the look associated with rapper Bad Bunny, where a thinned beard matches the thinned hair on the sides of the head, where meticulous designs are then created, all leading to a “fade” into a pompadour hair style on top. “I love my skillset,” Brown said. “I love going freestyle.” It’s a skillset that has served him well. As part of the team of hairstylists at The Barbers on Central Avenue in downtown Sarasota, his designs made him stand out. How much? “I decided it was time to expand, to be more well-known. I was ready to run my own business,” Brown said. So, at the age of just 21, the Sarasota native in February opened BigShow Barbers at 5212 Ocean Blvd. in the Village.
Chamber
Why did he choose Siesta Key? “I was out here one night and I looked around and didn’t see any other barber shops. Downtown, there are probably 20 of them in a 1-mile radius,” Brown said. “I knew this was my spot.” While Brown may be in demand for his unique designs and touches, he also has a love of the old-school-barber traditions. “I love the classy stuff as much as the new stuff,” he said. “A shave with a hot lather and steamed towels is something we do and people will always enjoy that service.” In fact, his basic haircut includes not only those delights but detailed razor edging and a facial/ head massage. Facial scrubs are also available. Meanwhile, Brown appreciates the community’s first responders, providing a $10 discount on services when they visit. And his services aren’t only for men. Brown offers an “undercut” for women where he creates a design while the hair is up in a bun. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. He added, “A lot of people put a lot of thought and time into this. We want the hotels to be small and reasonable and to complement the Key.” The first hotel proposal emerged in May of 2020 in the form of a 170-room hotel that would contain parking, shops and a restaurant, and be built from the ground up near Siesta Key Village in between Calle Miramar and Beach Road. A second hotel proposal that was also submitted that month seeks approval for a
new hotel to be built at Old Stickney Point Road and Peacock Road with 120 rooms. In August, a third hotel proposal detailed expansion plans for the Siesta Key Resort and Suites on Ocean Boulevard, going from 55 rooms to 170 rooms. Earlier this year, following the sale of the former Wells Fargo Bank building and property on Midnight Pass Road, a preapplication proposal was submitted to create a hotel with 100 rooms. In each case, although to varying degrees,
the applicant is requesting more than what’s currently allowed in the areas of intensity and density. Currently, county regulations allow up to 13 dwelling units per acre on Commercial General parcels. However, a hotel room without a kitchen counts as half a unit. In one case, it’s requested that any calculations be dropped entirely, and another is asking to be grandfathered-in to previous regulations. Any changes would apply to Future
Land Use Policy 2.91, which relates to the county’s barrier islands. Sarasota County commissioners will have the final say on what is allowed. Cavanaugh stated that the chamber does not plan to issue any further statements on the issue of hotel proposals for the Key. “We are not in support of any particular hotel,” he said, “but we do remain probusiness.”

locations (in the Village and Southbridge Mall) or by mail at P.O. Box 35214, Sarasota, FL 34242. Petitions will also be available at the next Save Siesta Key public meeting, set for 7 p.m. July 22 at Siesta Key Chapel, 4615 Gleason Ave., in the northern part of the Key. Meanwhile, the Save Siesta Key website reports that $75,894, via 91 donations, had been collected as of June 25 toward the group’s goal of $125,000. The donations pay for the feasibility study and the creation of a town charter, which serves as a municipality’s guiding document. The group did meet privately in early June with two key players from Fort Myers Beach’s first days of incorporation, which came Dec. 31, 1995. Marsha Segal-George, the former town manager, and John Gucciardo, her deputy, discussed the challenges they faced and what policies and procedures they implemented. The two will also be speaking at the July 22 public meeting. Among the steps for early success, they said, was the creation of several volunteer-based advisory committees that helped the town council. In many cases, Gucciardo said, they served as a steppingstone for residents who later ran for an elected position. When Fort Myers Beach became a town, more than 20 candidates vied for five at-large council seats, they noted. Segal-George, who is now city attorney for Deltona (which coincidentally also incorporated in 1995), suggested several experts who could help Save Siesta Key with a charter and, if approved by the Florida Legislature and then a majority of local voters, create a comprehensive plan for the new town. However, she reminded group of the importance of having strong support at the state level through the delegation that represents Siesta Key. “It doesn’t matter how impressive your study is or how nice and shiny your charter looks,” she said. “You need someone to believe in you in Tallahassee.” State Rep. Fiona McFarland will likely be that person, the board hopes. The members said they’ve spoken with her and plan to soon meet with her. The Legislature convenes in January. If Siesta Key gets the green light through a special act at the
state level, a special referendum vote locally would likely take place in March. Approval there is the final step, with election of council members to follow during the November general election. The earliest Siesta Key could become a town is Dec. 31 of next year. Bill Underwood, a government consultant, has been hired to produce the feasibility study. The charter’s author has yet to be determined by the incorporation group. John Davidson, the group’s chairman, has said that Save Siesta Key is modeling its effort after Fort Myers Beach’s “Government Lite” approach – an expression that Segal-George actually coined. Its concept is to have a limited number of employees and outsource many services, such as police protection, while electing a town council to only set policy while a town manger handles the administrative duties of running a town hall. Her strategy has even been published on an international level, she said. Under Government Lite, the council itself elects the mayor. The mayor’s role is mostly ceremonial and consists of the same power as the other council members. The opposite approach is to have a “strong mayor,” elected separately by the populace, to run the municipality -- an approach that Save Siesta Key board member Harry Anand has said he supports. He served as mayor of a town on New York’s Long Island and has noted that his status as a strong mayor was critical in tapping into resources during 2012’s Hurricane Sandy. The seven other board members, however, have stated they lean toward the town manager-led method. Either way, Gucciardo suggested that Save Siesta Key make use of the Florida League of Cities for future advice. Its annual convention is Aug. 12 through 14 in Orlando, and Gucciardo recommended that board members should interact with leaders of other municipalities in the hotel lobby. Especially those from barrier islands, where government life can be unique. “If you see anyone with the words ‘beach’ or ‘island’ on their nametag, you’ll want to pick their brains,” he said.

The news of the tragedy involving Jacob truly Alfieri rattled him. “All you can think is, ‘This could have been my own son,’” he said. “I wanted to help.” Alfieri, a public relations executive in New York, has returned this year and is spending a few months in The Landings. He reached out to the Brewer family members and got their blessing to help create an education campaign regarding the risks associated with lightning, where in Florida it’s more prevalent than anywhere else. “It’s a miracle he’s even alive,” Alfieri said of Jacob. “So, it’s a message that has to get out.” Alfieri plans to erect a tent on July 16 near the pavilion on Siesta Beach and hand out literature that outlines the dangers of lightning strikes. He hopes to also get support from local emergency personnel and generate interest in the media. Meanwhile, Barbara Brewer said she has seen TikTok videos that reference her son’s incident, as well as posts by Siesta Key lifeguard Scot Ruberg, known as “Scooter of the Beach,” that discuss lightning’s danger as a result of the tragedy. “What Jim is doing is also great. People need to know Jacob’s story – and think twice before you go to the beach with a storm in the forecast. It could save another family. We didn’t know enough about it. It’s not safe.” And Alfieri’s interest, out of the clear blue like that fateful lightning bolt, is another example of a people reaching out to the Brewers from places they never would expect. “Did you know we received a $2,000 check anonymously? And dinner delivered? From a complete stranger,” Barbara Brewer said. “Who would ever imagine such a thing. When something happens like this, you enter a world you never knew existed.”

Arts on the Horizon By Rodger Skidmore Sounds of summer
T
hat’s a good question -- what are the sounds of summer? It used to be, up north or in the Midwest, crickets. This year, while many would say cicadas, others might just say millions of sighs of relief. Since individual sighs are kind of short and summer, especially in Sarasota, is quite long, something more than mere bugs will be needed. Perhaps music. Time passes so quickly these days -- it’s already July and summer is in full swing. Yes, check your calendar and you’ll see that June is already over. Uh-oh, the Sarasota Music Festival took place in mid-June, so it seems (to the faint of heart) that we’ve already missed some of the most vibrant, stirring, melodious sounds of this summer. Not true, not true. Yes, you’ve missed driving along Tamiami Trail toward Holley Hall and having the pleasure of trying out a couple of our new roundabouts, but don’t worry, you’ve got all summer to experience those joys. Lots of Sarasotians who did not think of themselves as being endowed with a plethora of technical skills have become experts at streaming events directly into their homes. The first festival concert they (you) missed,

Mozart wrote quite a few violin sonatas -- his Sonata No. 18 in G Major was dedicated to Maria Elisabeth, Electress of the Palatinate -- and are consequently are known as part of the Palatine Sonatas (lots of things to Google here) and is said to be one of his warmest and most recognizable works. The violin and piano trade places in playing the melody. Also on the program are Britten’s suite for Piano and Beethoven’s violin Sonata No. 5 in F Major. The second festival offering is a Jeffery Kahane lecture on the Romantic Revolution which illustrates the connections between its various composers. That lecture is also gone but still available. Angie Zahang’s Dedications piano concert starts with Clara Schumann’s Theme of Robert Schumann, and is followed by Caroline Shaw’s Gustave le Gray dedicated to/incorporating parts of Chopin’s A Minor Mazsuka. Chopin’s own Piano Sonata No. 3, dedicated to one of his pupils, rounds out the bill. Not leap year
Yes, this July has five weekends (here “weekend” is defined as Friday and Saturday night, when you can get out of the house and relax). And what can you do on one, some, or all of those weekends? One suggestion is quite laughable: go to McCurdy’s Humor Institute (comedy theatre) downtown on Ringling Boulevard. The month starts off (July 2 and 3) with Scott Novotny, who does clean observational humor. Ron Feingold follows (9th and 10th) and does traditional standup comedy with an a cappella twist -- actually vocals with music he
Presidential elections take place each leap year and we just had one in 2020. So, while this is not a leap year, July is a leap month, in that there will be a lot of leaping and general jumping about going on. As leaping is quite an intense activity, it is natural that Sarasota Contemporary Dance will have its “In The Round” performances during its Summer Intensive. The students and choreographers are trying to get as much work done as possible during these few summer months and the results will be a live performance on the 16th showcasing the works of up-andcoming designers of dance. If you can’t make it on the 16th, not to worry, you will be able to see the same works, step for step, in the convenience of your own home the next evening. It seems that there is another

group in Sarasota that is just as intense as Sarasota Contemporary Dance. It is Sarasota Cuban Ballet. Summer Intensive sessions seem to be held by dance companies all across the U.S. -- a really nice thing. The students that have gone through the Sarasota Cuban Ballet’s intensive program will be in their on-stage production on July 31. “Oh, no” you say, “not a student dance recital!” Well, two things to consider: The first is this program is an international one, so these young almost-professionals are the cremede-la-creme. In fact, many do get picked to dance in world-class ballet companies. Which brings up the second reason to attend: There will be guest artists from the Royal Ballet of London. Hot stuff. motel rooms — allowed per acre in the Commercial General districts of the Siesta Key Overlay District zoning regulations. Instead of 13 units per acre if more than 25% of the rooms have a kitchen, the number would rise to 26. For a hotel with up to 25% of the rooms containing kitchens, the figure would climb from 26 to 52 units per acre. Originally, Balot’s team sought an amendment that would allow a 35-foot hotel above two levels of parking to be constructed in a Commercial General/Siesta Key Overlay District zone. However, after talking with leaders of island organizations, Balot said he modified the plans so as not to set such a precedent for the island. His hotel has been designed with 100 rooms on 2.15 acres, Balot said. Mark Sultana of DSDG Architects in Sarasota explained that the first floor would be mostly parking, except for the lobby and a valet drop-off area. The second level also would be dedicated primarily to parking, though plans call for an enclosed restaurant and

bar to be located over the lobby. A meeting/conference room would be placed on that level, as well. The third floor would have a courtyard design, with a pool and amenities in the center and the rooms on the north and south sides of that area. That floor, too, would have a restaurant and bar, but on an open deck. Levels four and five would have only hotel rooms. Spiegel noted that Siesta Key Coalition members have found “plenty of examples of great boutique hotels” in other areas that would be compliant with the existing Siesta zoning regulations. Balot said he settled on approximately 100 rooms because “This is what I felt, at the very least, that I could put my money into and make it work.” “The other boutique hotels are more high-end, in line with Westin or a Ritz-Carlton,” he pointed out. He wants his hotel “to be a family-friendly place [where] I could show up in flip-flops, cargo shorts and a T-shirt,” Balot added. Asked about his “Plan B” if the County Commission turns

down his proposal, Balot replied, “I don’t have a Plan B as of right now.” Potentially, he said, he could construct retail businesses on the property. “I personally believe the Key would benefit from a hotel,” Balot pointed out more than once during the workshop. Resident Dan Curtin brought up what he called a rumor that chiropractor and business owner Gary Kompothecras, and/or Kompothecras’ family members and associates, are investors in Balot’s project. That is not true, Balot replied.
However, Balot said he did work for Kompothecras for 19 years, leaving that employment in 2015. The traffic, the restaurant and bar Traffic was the focus of many questions and comments. Lourdes Ramirez stressed of the land at 5810 Midnight Pass Road, “You’re in a very congested area of Siesta Key,” near the public beach and Fire Station 13. Although county staff did not require that his team conduct a traffic study, Balot said, his team “felt it was prudent to get one anyway …”
The hotel would create less traffic, Balot pointed out, than the Wells Fargo bank did. Balot said he had spoken with the person who managed the branch before it closed. That person told him, he said, that between 150 and 300 cars per day came to the bank site. As a silent partner in ownership of the Siesta Key Beach Resort and Suites, Balot added, he has seen that most guests do not use their cars. Although traffic congestion is a concern for them, he added, “Parking is a bigger issue. … I’d say 80% of the cars never leave the parking lot.” He believes the primary contributor to island congestion is “the traffic coming off and on the Key,” Balot said. In response to concerns about his restaurant and bar plans, Balot emphasized that his goal is to provide a restaurant that serves alcoholic beverages. “I have no intention of having a Beach Club. I have no intention of having a Crescent Club. … The No. 1 business there is going to be a hotel,” he added, and hotel guests want quiet at night.

available from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which maintains an Historical Annual Average Daily Traffic Report, the report explains. Therefore, the report continues, the counts Kimley-Horn collected at the intersections were increased by 10%, “to provide a conservative analysis.” Further, the report notes, the vehicle
counts at those intersections were “adjusted to reflect peak [tourist] season conditions.” Kimley-Horn staff utilized 2019 peak season data from Sarasota County in that process, as well, the report says. The five intersections were as follows: • Beach Road and Ocean Boulevard. • Calle Miramar and Ocean Boulevard. • Ingress driveway on Calle Miramar.
• Ingress and egress driveway on Calle Miramar. • Beach Road and Calle De La Siesta. All the intersections would be expected to operate with a volume-to-capacity ratio less than 1, the report notes. The Federal Highway Administration explains that the volume-to-capacity ratio is “also referred to as degree of saturation,
[representing] the sufficiency of an intersection to accommodate the vehicular demand. A v/c ratio less than 0.85 generally indicates that adequate capacity is available and vehicles are not expected to experience significant queues and delays. None of the Siesta intersections that Kimley-Horn studied for its report has a traffic signal.

What’s new ... beyond the bridges
ummer days are here. The crowds are slighter and everyone seems to amble a bit more slowly. It’s the perfect time of the year to try something new. How about checking out some cuisines that aren’t traditionally on your radar screen? Vegan, for instance. If you haven’t tried it, you may be in for a happy surprise.
Ka Papa is an elegant new up-scale eatery on the Osprey Avenue corridor near Hillside Avenue that features locally sourced, plant-based vegan dishes crafted from fresh ingredients. All Ka Papa cuisine is made without any animal products. Diners enjoy a selection of both small- and largeplate dishes as well as soups and
By Jane Bartnett salads. A fine selection of wines and champagnes, beers, exotic mocktails and enticing desserts are also on the menu. Large-plate dishes such as its Saffron Risotto Stuffed Tomato begin at $21. Small-plate offerings that include Spicy Endamame begin at $8.50. When it comes time for dessert, the Fruit Tiramisu with house-made cream, raspberries, blueberries and cookie crumble soaked in fresh orange juice is sure

to tempt you. Open for dinner on Wednesdays through Sundays, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Ka Papa is owned by the mother/daughter duo of Bella and Kim. The name Ka Papa is Hawaiian for Papa’s. The two women chose it to honor the memory of their late husband and father. Make a reservation by phone at (941) 600-8590 or visit kapapacuisine.com. The address is 1830 South Osprey Ave. Continuing our vegan journey on a more casual note, there’s a bright new plant-based, glutenfree vegan eatery called Palmer’s Nutritious You that opened recently in the former home of the popular TooJay’s Deli in the Crossings at Siesta Key Mall (formerly Westfield Siesta Key). Only a few doors away from Macy’s and the Esporta Gym, smoothie and juice fans will be delighted at what’s instore here. If you’re hungry, try one of the “meal” offerings that includes a Beyond Meat Burger, spring rolls, and protein balls. If you have a sweet tooth, Palmer’s Nutritious You offers delicious gluten-free vegan bakery items. Dine in or take your treasures home to enjoy with the whole family. A second location is on Siesta Key at 6583 Midnight Pass Rd. The new store is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, at 3501 S. Tamiami Tr. Visit nutritiousyou. com. While we’re talking about mixing up your usual dining out fare, how about spicing up your day with breakfast foods -- even if it is mid-afternoon? Can’t you see that big stack of pancakes calling your name? After all, it’s 7 a.m. somewhere in the world. The Dix Coney Cafe at 6525 Superior Ave. in Gulf Gate pays tribute to breakfast food, Michigan style. To drive that message home, there’s a big sign on the front of the building that announces that breakfast is served “anytime.” Its vibe is casual, all-American food, and to be fair its owners are also big fans of lunch food, too. Hailing from Detroit, they report “We offer delicious breakfast and lunches along with Detroit-style Coney Island hot dogs with our famous Detroit Chili.” A limited kids menu makes

this place a great spot to bring the family. Dine inside or take it home with you. The full menu is online on Instagram or call Dix Coney Cafe at (941) 927-1672. The Dix Coney Cafe is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, as spring turned into summer, two well-known area restaurants announced important changes. The landmark Bijou Cafe, opposite the Sarasota Opera House on First Street and Pineapple Avenue, came under new ownership. The folks that own the neighboring Sage Restaurant are now directing the downtown Sarasota fine-dining spot. Sage’s owners have pledged to honor Chef Jean Pierre “J.P.” Knagg’s menu and to maintain the Bijou Cafe’s iconic appeal. Known for its unique French- and South African-inspired cuisine, charming ambiance, and beautiful courtyard dining area, Bijou Cafe is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Call: (941) 366-8111 or visit bijoucafe.net Last month, on June 19, fans of the White Buffalo Saloon, a popular South Sarasota country dance, music and nighttime casual dining spot at 5377 McIntosh Rd., said goodbye to the place that they’ve come to gather since 2013. But, according to news reports, the goodbye will give way to a welcome hello when the owners find a new home. Calusa Brewing, a veteranowned, south Sarasota-based craft brewery, will take over the existing space.

It features more than 4,000 feet of commercial space consisting of four kitchens that it shares with those who rent it. Chef Gordon Lippe runs the operation. One of the small food businesses that has found success in the space is Bootsy’s Pot Pies & Other Good Stuff. Here, award-winning Chef Frank Imbarlina sells his celebrated pot pies on order. Food-truck owners and “ghost kitchen” restaurant owners (where the food is prepared off site) also benefit from Your Culinary Place. Such steps forward required perseverance. Following the 2008 housing recession, the area recovered slowly. In 2017, local businesses came together to establish a non-profit Gulf Gate Area Merchants Association. Yet, despite the efforts of a small group, it did not survive and is currently listed as inactive. Made up primarily of businesses that lease their space, the entrepreneurial community nonetheless made it through the pandemic.
This, Rosato said, “shows the dedication of the people here in Gulf Gate.” Today, a drive through the streets of Gulf Gate shows only one visible vacancy sign on a door and one space under construction. Meanwhile, during the past six months, five new restaurants and bars have opened their doors. Beyond Brine and Rosato’s businesses, Dix Coney Cafe, Roman
SQ, and Seabar have arrived. Finally, a nod to Gulf Gate’s progress can be found from Visit Sarasota, the county’s tourism promotional arm. It calls Gulf Gate “a hidden jewel in south Sarasota.” And this summer, as part of the county’s Neighborhood Improvement Program, the area can look forward to smoother roads, curb and sidewalk improvements.

JULY 2021
Notes from the Island Fishmonger
Capt. Jim Klopfer’s Fishing Forecast Adventure Charters (941) 371-1390
J
uly fishing can be excellent, but tactics need to be a little different and windows of opportunity are smaller. It is simply too hot to fish in the middle of the day. Early morning will be the most reliable time to fish, evenings are good too, but frequent thunderstorms can make planning a trip difficult. Anglers who don’t mind fishing in the dark will have success at night, and they will beat the summer heat! Action on the deep grass flats from the north end of Siesta Key should be very good for speckled trout, along with bluefish, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, pompano, and jacks. A high tide in the morning is favored for anglers to drift the flats and cast Bass Assassin jigs, plugs, spoons, and live shrimp under a popping cork. Netting up a bunch of shiners and chumming the deep flats will usually result in non-stop action. The flats and oyster bars south of Stickney Point down to Blackburn Point will hold some nice trout in July, and that area gets very little pressure in the summertime. The key is water temperature -- if it is too high the bait and gamefish will not be there. Redfish and snook will also cruise the bars and shorelines in search of prey. Snook will be schooled up in Big Sarasota Pass, on the north end of Siesta Key. Live bait fished in the deep water around structure will produce snook. They will also
be caught right off of all of the beaches. Anglers can sight cast to them with small lures and flies in the morning when seas are calm and the sun is behind them. Redfish will begin to school up in July and can be caught in very shallow water. The largest trout also prefer shallow water, so don’t be surprised if a gator intercepts an offering meant for a redfish. Anglers need to be aware that redfish are currently closed to harvest, due to the red tide of 2018. Night fishing will be exciting and productive in July. Illuminated docks and bridges attract glass minnows and shrimp, which in turn attract the gamefish. Snook are abundant, but trout, reds, jacks, ladyfish, and snapper will also be caught at night. Live shrimp works very well free-lined in the current with little or no weight. A 24-inch piece of 25-pound flourocarbon leader and a 1/0 live bait hook is the basic rig. Lures will also catch fish, but can be difficult to cast at night. Fly fisherman will score with a small white snook fly such as the Grassett’s Snook Minnow tied on a No. 4 hook. Tarpon will still be plentiful in the Gulf of Mexico, although the anglers will not be. The large schools will have broken up, and although the fish don’t show as well, they eat better. Pinfish and crabs drifted out 6 feet under a cork at first light will catch tarpon in July. Point of Rocks on Siesta Key is a proven spot to fish.

obster rolls are a special summer sandwich. Native to New England clam shacks and roadside stands, it is now an island delicacy in Florida as well. Traditionally, the best lobster rolls have been found in the states of Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Well, recent importation technology has since thrown Florida into the mix. Bestknown locations on Siesta Key to get an authentic lobster roll include the Lobster Pot, Siesta Beach concession stand, and the Big Water Deli and Fish Market. Who invented the lobster roll? It’s a seriously succulent story. Fishermen of course, before the roll went gourmet, when lobster sandwiches were made by the lobster fisherman themselves. It was a simple, inexpensive meal made with two slices of white bread with cooked lobster meat from less-than-perfect lobsters or from the day’s unsold catch. Today, hand-picked lobster for the rolls is easier to come by. Specialty fish markets and restaurants are able to get lobster from their food suppliers, or the good ones have Boston connections where live lobsters and hand-picked meat is sold directly to them. Lobster in the 1920s was in high supply and low demand, and was even once considered to be the cockroach of the sea. While there are plenty of rumors about the lobster roll’s original birthplace, it can be first traced to the Roaring Twenties to a restaurant called Perry’s in Milford, Connecticut. Harry, the proprietor, began perfecting the sandwich and noted that sliced bread was a bit of a letdown. According to Harry, it was “flimsy, soggy, and didn’t
hold the lobster well.” He thus created a special bun just for Perry’s, sort of a submarine sandwich roll. Harry made a simple recipe of cooked Maine lobster with mayo and chopped celery. This eventually developed into hot steamed lobster meat combination on a buttered roll. The bread was buttered, grilled, and ready for takeout. The history continued of the lobster roll, and as it became more popular it developed into a gourmet sandwich that’s now served on a split bun, depending on locale. In 2021, beachgoers, island locals, and tourists enjoy this evolved lobster roll that’s been reinvented on the Florida Gulf Coast. Want to make your own lobster roll? Bostonian hand-picked fresh lobster meat is available at Big Water Fish Market. Here is an easy-to-follow recipe that serves four: Combine ... * quarter cup of chopped celery * one freshly squeezed lemon * 2 pounds of freshly picked Maine lobster meat * half cup of mayo of your choice * salt and pepper to taste Once you gather and mix all ingredients in a bowl, butter a sauté pan or grill your bread of your choice (top-split buttered and grilled hot dog bun is most popular), then overstuff with lobster salad and enjoy with a cold one. Enjoy! Eat fish … live well. -- Scott Dolan BigWaterFishMarket.com 6641 Midnight Pass Rd.

This was our fifth real estate deal over the years, from San Francisco and San Diego, CA to Portland, OR to Cape Cod, MA. We have experienced “the good, the bad, and the ugly” in real estate agents. If you want someone who is more than just an agent, Al Nemore puts the “More” in Realtor - more attention to detail, more follow through, and more contingency planning. His extensive local knowledge and trusted contacts helped us navigate a complex land transaction on Siesta Key. Now we can build our “forever home” in this little slice of paradise! Trust Al - he truly cares.

Situated mid-Siesta Key, Harbour Towne is easily accessible to both the north and south bridges for convenient on/ off island travel. Importantly, both mid-Key and Siesta
Village with an abundance of restaurants, shops and vibrant nightlife are just minutes away. A gated enclave of 50 townhome-style units are arranged in five three-story buildings around the marina. Each unit affords a lovely water view. The property is impeccably maintained in a beautifully landscaped 5.3-acre setting. Resortstyle amenities include a lovely

clubhouse with fully equipped kitchen, heated pool with hot tub, tennis court, pickleball courts, and outdoor pavilion with grill. On-site maintenance ensures the highest level of upkeep throughout the property. Of the 50 units, 25 are singlelevel, two-bedroom two-bath units; the other 25 units are on two levels with three bedrooms and two to three baths. The condos range in size from 1,217 to 2,326 square feet. Realtors Bob and Sheri LasleyRuiz, owners at Harbour Towne, have sold multiple units in the community. They assert a prime feature of the property are the deeded, deep-water boat slips – a unique amenity for a Siesta Key condominium. The docks, ideally located with no bridges to the bay and just minutes to the Gulf, make the community a top choice for boaters. “Directly on the intracoastal waterway, the no-wake zone is less than a mile long, then you are to the bay!” Bob said. “Each of the 50 units includes a private deeded slip, most with lifts of up to 20,000 pounds and all with the capacity for a lift, with water and electricity. All of this and just a short walk to the beach! “Each unit also includes an attached one-car garage with coveted walk-around attic storage.”
Rarely found on the Key, owners may store a grill in their garage and have a barbecue directly in the front of their unit. Owners attest one of the greatest attributes of the community is its people. The docks, grills and especially the pool and clubhouse, are draws for social interaction. Pickleball and tennis, as well as fishing and boating, are all natural draws for daytime social gatherings. Most evenings, residents can be seen at the pool/clubhouse for an impromptu cocktail hour which often turns into a casual dinner. Renters are welcome at Harbour Towne and most renters
return year after year. A onemonth minimum rental period lends to primarily seasonal and full-time residents. “More than 85% of owners are part- or full-time residents,” Bob said. In the past three months, five units have sold. They range in price from $639,000 for a 1,737-square-foot three-bedroom unit, to $965,000 for a threebedroom 2,326-square-foot unit. Recently, several units have sold before listed in MLS. For more information about Harbour Towne Yacht Club or any Siesta Key property, please contact Bob or Sheri Ruiz at 941-544-3299/941400-4186 or RobertRuizRR@aol.com.

Key Employee
Maria
Maria has been a sales associate with the Green Turtle Shell & Gift City, located in Southbridge Mall, for a year and a half. “Her enthusiasm is contagious,” said her boss, Patty. “The customers just love it.” Maria moved here in November 2019 from the Florida Keys. She’s a Miami native. “I grew up with the beach and the water, so I love the sharks teeth, and I’m crazy about all the alligator stuff,” Maria said of her store. “All the fun items here have me in heaven. It’s not a job to me.” Photos by John Morton (To nominate a Siesta Key employee worthy of recognition, email: info@27statemedia.com.)
Sun Garden Cafe recognizes the impact that quality workers can have on a business, and is proud to sponsor the Key Employee each month.
Congratulations, Maria! Your dedication has resulted in a gift certificate for breakfast for four at Sun Garden Cafe, located at 210 Avenida Madera in the Village.
