Siesta, city hold summit
Beach University back in session at public beach pavilion By John Morton Catherine Wunderlich loves to recite this slogan: “Beach University! We have a 100% acceptance rate and zero student debt.” The free, long-running educational series returns in March, guiding beachgoers through a weekly 45-minute class that showcases Siesta Beach and its many characteristics. Issues regarding the environment and the beach’s habitat are often at the forefront.
“We get people who come specifically for the seminar, and then many who are just passing by and the subject matter catches their ear,” said Wunderlich, who serves as special events coordinator for Siesta with Sarasota County. “Our guests enjoy hearing about things they might never have thought about before. They learn there’s more to the beach than playing volleyball or going for a walk.” Continued on page 8

Valentine’s Day vows run rampant By Jane Bartnett
L
ove was finally in the air again on Siesta Beach. The annual Say “I Do” Again ceremony, hosted by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, made its festive return on Valentine’s Day after a two-year absence, due to the pandemic. A Siesta Key tradition, the sunset ceremony has been held on Siesta Beach for more than three decades. This year’s event brought out more than 200 couples who came to publicly proclaim their love for each other and renew their marriage vows. There were kissing booths and beautifully decorated photo locations on the beach. Some couples brought family and friends along to celebrate their big day and a general feeling of joy and happiness filled the air, along with love-themed songs. A little flower girl dressed in a fairytale outfit posed for pictures with her proud grandparents and parents. Many brides came to the beach with pink and white roses that were distributed by county staff as part of the $15 early-registration package that couples paid to take part in the service. Brides and grooms and their guests also enjoyed cupcakes decorated with pink and red icing.

In a private, behind-closed-doors meeting on Feb. 16, Sarasota Mayor Erik Arroyo and his city manager, Marlon Brown, hosted at Sarasota City Hall a contingency from Siesta Key to discuss the city’s interest in exploring the annexation of the island. Among the Siesta Key leaders present were Tim Hensey and Tracy Jackson of Save Siesta Key, the group who is seeking incorporation instead of being governed by Sarasota County; Frank Jurenka of the Siesta Key Condominium Council; Mark Spiegel of the Siesta Key Coalition, a group created to fight against the large hotels being planned for the island; and Catherine Luckner and Joyce Kouba of the longstanding Siesta Key Association. “The meeting went very well and everyone is remaining optimistic and open-minded moving forward,” Arroyo said. The invitation came after Arroyo told his city commissioners in January that he’d like to begin discussions. On Jan. 4, the Sarasota County Legislative Delegation with a 3-3 vote put a halt for now to Save Siesta Key’s eightContinued on page 29
