Home stretch for incorporation team Save Siesta Key group surpasses petition requirement, but wants more; next public meeting is Aug. 18 By John Morton Collecting petitions of support from 10% of a population of registered voters may not sound difficult, but on a tropical barrier island filled with massive condo complexes and thousands of back-and-forth snowbirds it’s no easy task. Save Siesta Key, the group seeking incorporation of the island in hope it
becomes its own municipality instead of being governed by Sarasota County, recently cleared that hurdle. Required as part of the application process to the Florida Legislature, the 10% threshold was recently met, according to Save Siesta Key board member Tracy Jackson, who as of July 20 had hand-signed petitions from 993 of the

island’s 8,915 voting residents. Another 100-plus petitions have been turned in by property and business owners who don’t live here, but want their voice heard. Such support is considered an important part of the application, a Florida League of Cities representative told the incorporation team back in May.
Meanwhile, the required feasibility study being assembled by consultant Bill Underwood is nearing completion, Jackson reported, and now the creation of a required charter (the governing document for a municipality) is underway. Calle Miramar, Old Stickney Point Road pitches set to be reviewed by Planning Commission By Rachel Brown Hackney SarasotaNewsLeader.com The first two hotel proposals submitted to Sarasota County staff are the first two scheduled for county Planning Commission hearings, county documents show. At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, the project team for the hotel planned on four parcels between Calle Miramar and Beach Road will have its chance to win over the planning commissioners. Then, two weeks later, on Sept. 2, the team representing Gary Kompothecras will appear before the Planning Commission to discuss his proposal for a seven-story, 120room hotel on Old Stickney Point Road and a five-story parking garage on Stickney Point Road. Additionally, County Administrator Jonathan Lewis won approval of the County Commission on July 13 to set that board’s public hearing dates on the two proposals. The Calle Miramar project will be the solitary item on the County Commission’s Oct. 27 agenda. Likewise, the County Commission will address Kompothecras’ plans as the sole focus of business on the Nov. 2 agenda. Both hearings will be conducted at the County Administration Center located at 1660 Ringling Blvd. in downtown Sarasota. In late spring of 2020, one of the principals behind the proposal for
Tropical Storm Elsa, which temporarily became a hurricane, on July 6 and 7 gave Siesta Key a good soaking with about 2 inches of rain, but that was about it. Wind gusts did reach 54 mph, but they mostly stayed in the 35 to 40 mph range. Many businesses closed early on July 6, as did the Sarasota-Bradenton airport, yet things were back to normal the next morning. Clockwise from above left, Patriot’s Pier got roughed up; the lifeguard stations were moved back from the water; Beach Road was flooded; Crescent Beach attracted a brave wave enthusiast the day after the storm passed. Happiness Is…Back to School That’s not a phrase we often hear, is it? But after a long year of ups and downs, that is exactly the spirit of many teachers, parents, and students.
