Plans Proceeding for new Siesta Key Resort An Update on the Proposed Siesta Key Resort Siesta Sand spoke with Dr. Gary Kompothecras about his planned Siesta Key Resort on Stickney Point. He discussed the hotel’s contemporary exterior design and provided Siesta Sand with an exclusive preview of the structure’s exterior rendering. He noted that onsite parking will be out of view, under the main building. Additional garage parking, across the street from the hotel, where the Bank of America building was once located will reflect a coastal appearance.

Sarasota County public beaches will be closed indefinitely, County Administrator Jonathan Lewis an nounced during a March 19 press conference. County leaders’ concern, he said, has been that closings of beaches in other com mu n it ies — especia l ly i n Sout h Florida — would drive more visitors to the shoreline on the west coast of the state, including Sarasota County beaches. “I t r ave r s e d t h e b e a c h f r om ou r southernmost point to our northernmost point today,” Lewis said. People have been doing “exactly what we’ve asked of them,” he added, which is gathering in groups

Ron DeSantis and health officials offered earlier in the week, Lewis emphasized. “Unfortunately,” he continued, “we’ve been very worried [about the potential impact of beach closures in other parts of Florida]. … We’re worried about the gridlock that might come into play.” “Our residents have been fantastic,” Lewis said, “and we will keep that in mind. … We will do our best to keep this closure as short as possible.” “S a ra s o t a C ou nt y i s k n ow n a s a Continued on page 23

Sarasota County Commissioner Nancy Detert acknowledged on March 11 that she had been prepared to vote “No” on another petition involving construction seaward of the county’s Gulf Beach Setback Line. H o we ve r, a f t e r l i s t e n i n g t o t h e presentation of William Merrill III of the Icard Merrill law firm in Sarasota, she said she had changed her mind. She noted Merrill’s comments about the fact that each of the two new proposed homes would have a smaller footprint at the ground level than the existing structure located at 65 Beach Road on Siesta Key.

SarasotaNewsLeader.com Merrill and Staci Tippins, a county envi ron menta l specia list, expla i ned during a March 11 public hearing that the plans call for demolishing a 2,568-squarefoot, slab-on-grade house built in 1971. The parcel then would be subdivided into the two original plats it encompasses in the Mira Mar Beach Subdivision. Afterward, two modern, two-story structures built over parking areas would total 5,260 square feet, Merrill and Tippins told the board. Continued on page 46
