Mark your calendars! Save the dates!!! The Landings’ Free College will commence its weekly presentations on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 2-3 p.m. in the Lakeside Room of LRC. This year’s schedule (see below) promises to be one of the most diverse and interesting in the history of the program. On behalf of the Free College Nominations Committee (Mona Poyta, Teresa Manteiga, Frank Pipers, and John Bruno, Chair) I wish to thank members of the community for their interesting nominations and self-nominations. As a brief overview, the list of speakers represents a compelling combination of professionals from the Sarasota arts, medical, technology, and foreign policy spaces. At the same time, we have several fascinating presentations from our Landings’ residents, ranging from dispelling myths about brain function to senior dating! So, bring in the New Year with the reinforcing experience of learning something new! We hope to see you on January 11 th .

This is the fourteenth in a series of articles highlighting the special volunteers who help to make The Landings such a wonderful community. The Eagle interviewed Eddie Goldstein for this issue. B u s i n e s s wo m a n , s n o w b i r d , hospital administrator, swimmer, photographer, sailor, yoga student, gardener, dancer, hiker, actress, wife, parent and grandparent; all describe Eddie Goldstein. Eddie has spent most of her life in the Philadelphia area. She grew up in Overbrook Park, and attended junior and senior high schools in Havertown, PA. She went to summer camp in Maine where she further developed her interest in the outdoors, mountain climbing, hiking and the arts. After graduating Syracuse University with a liberal arts and psychology degree, Eddie took time off to hitchhike throughout the U.S. and Canada, ending up in Montreal. She stayed there for a year working odd jobs (on a sewing assembly line making leather pants, in a Polish restaurant) while learning French. After moving back to Philadelphia, she worked at The Academy of Natural Sciences in Development, and then for 5 years as On-Air Auction Director for the local PBS TV affiliate. The early 80’s saw Eddie embark on a 10-year career as a hospital administrator at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During this time Eddie married, had her daughter Molly, and moved to Moorestown NJ, a close suburb of Philadelphia. After a brief pause as a stay-at-home mom, Eddie started her business as a Publishers’ Representative. Her focus was on getting related businesses to purchase print advertisements in
publications focused on parenting, style, and African American health, to name a few. Work i ng f i r st w it h one lo c a l newspaper, she expanded the business to representing a variety of regional, and national publications. With the advent of the internet, Eddie got involved with a dotcom company, BeyondWork, which was her first entry into the online world. That led to a 22+ year career (she is still working) as an independent sales and marketing professional representing Thomasnet.com, a company dedicated to supp or t i ng Nor t h A me r ic a n manufacturing. With clients that range from international valve manufacturers to local packaging companies, Eddie helps her clients grow their businesses almost exclusively with the use of digital marketing. Eddie’s second husband, Chris, a professor of mathematics at Temple University, have been together since 2003, when the family grew with the addition of Chris’ children Daniel and Romina. Eddie’s parents used to winter on Lido Key, so she and Chris had opportunities to visit Sarasota. Since they both were able to work remotely during Covid, they spent time on Siesta Key, fell in love with the area, and decided to look for a place. Eddie said that when she first entered The Landings, it was a “wow” experience. “The beautiful landscaping, the feel of the community, the diverse housing and friendly, interesting people were what attracted us to the community.” When in Fall 2021 they learned that a unit in Eagles Point Circle was available, they were finally able to purchase their home in The Landings.
Even as a part-time resident, Eddie soon got involved. While listening in on an LMA zoom meeting, she heard that there was a need for volunteers to help with the website. She met with Elida Ramberger and Joan Koplin, who immediately recruited her to chair the website committee. With a wink of her eye, Eddie told this reporter that in The Landings, “you need to be careful when you raise your hand”. She has since not only chaired the website committee but has also taken on the overall chairmanship of the Communications Committee, and recently filled an open seat on the LMA Board. “It has been a great experience for me. I have met and am collaborating with many wonderful and talented people. It’s rewarding to see that the work we do together can make changes for the benefit o f t h e e nt i r e community.” O u t s i d e The Landings, Eddie has taken adva nt ag e o f Selby Gardens, The Sarasota Museum of Art, Asolo Theatre, Va n We z e l , Florida Studio Theatre, and the Artists Concert Series. When asked what she hopes will take place over future years in The Landings, she said: “I hope more residents of all ages and skill sets will get
involved as volunteers. The Landings is like a little city and so of course that requires a focus on physical infrastructure. But we also need to improve our overall communications and systems, the “unseen” infrastructure that connects us all. Improving the website is an important piece of that, but there is also a lot of software that backs up our overall community that needs attention too.” Apart from The Landings, Eddie and Chris enjoy family (including new grandbaby Leo) and traveling. They’ve spent lots of time in Argentina (where Chris is from), as well as in France, Italy, Germany and Switzerland, where Eddie has joined Chris when he has taken sabbaticals throughout his teaching career. A big thank you, to Eddie Goldstein, one of our special Landings volunteers.

President’s Report Dear Neighbors, The 2024 Budget Cycle has been completed and we have an approved budget for 2024 that is fully consistent with a conservative fiscal approach designed to build a strong balance sheet. Thank you to the members of the financial committee for your hard work and thank you residents for your support. The next important event for the board will be our upcoming election to fill vacancies for the 2024 board year (February 2024-February 2025). As of this writing (November 16) we expect to have four open seats for a two-year term. (Each year we alternate between electing four and five seats to preserve consistency and the necessary institutional experience to operate effectively). I would like to point out that LMA activities have become increasingly complex, and we are depending on volunteers to run what has become a $1.3 million operation. We need board members who will continue to devote

significant hours to the betterment of our community through the application of their professional talents in areas of importance to the community. O u r G o ve r n a n c e C o m m i t t e e has taken the lead in the search for individuals who are ready, willing, and able to help. Please consider helping your community by volunteering to work with LMA. The roads project has started in earnest, and I would like to thank Elida Ramsberger, Chair of the Roads Committee, for her proactive approach to communicating to residents, LMA Committees and the Board of Directors the latest developments and schedules as they become available. Elida will discuss these developments in a separate article, but I do want to mention the strong financial underpinnings of the project. The total cost of the project is $4.1 million and to date we have paid the contractor $500,000 for preliminary expenses and work performed. Against the $3.6 million owed, we have an adequate balance in existing road reserves and
the 2023 surplus we are projecting. (The surplus is projected to be $200,000 of which 70% is related to interest income net of tax and 30% to committee generated surplus.) In addition, back up funding is available in owner’s equity of $200,000 and $175,000 2024 road reserve funding. Finally, we have secured a $600,000 line of credit to have available in the extremely unlikely case that our back up funding would not be adequate. The last area to discuss is our lakes. We are experiencing an historical drought and our lakes have never been this low. October rainfall was 30% of normal and YTD rainfall is on track to be the lowest level recorded since 1920. We estimate it will take 8” of rainfall to restore water levels yet average rainfall during November and December is only half of that amount. Unfortunately, the continuation of low water may necessitate shutting down some of our fountains and the bare banks of our lakes will be generally unsightly. Thank you for yourunderstanding and patience.

The Launch Is Launched! Submitted by Jackie Massari
The kayak launch was installed on Friday, November 17! Its ready to use for all those eager to get their kayaks on the water and hopefully makes that process easier. Next step is to clear the foliage
along a small portion of the trail, while protecting the mangroves. Then we order and install five 4-berth racks parallel to the path. These will require human power to assemble, which I am told is easy.
I had hoped the launch would be installed by Thanksgiving and now hope the new racks will be ready by the New Year. Sometimes wishes do come true!

LHCF Brings Holiday Joy to Those in Need The Landings community residents support of LHCF (Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation) has not only provided over 1000 gifts to unfortunate kids during past seven holiday seasons but influenced the origin and/or expansion of several organizations we support. We have helped the organizations not only by providing gifts to the children they serve but often helping the organization themselves expand and provide broader impact! Here are some examples of how LHCF Foundation has helped: - The Children Cancer Center is a non-profit dedicated to serving children and their families who are battling pediatric cancer or chronic blood disorders with emotional, financial, and educational support necessary to cope with their lifethreatening illness.
The CCC has acknowledged they would not have a presence in Sarasota area if it were not for LHCF’s support. We provided space for the families to meet and gather, each year adding additional families facing cancer and providing the muchneeded peer support. The Holiday parties we helped to provide were the visible effort that Landings folks were part of. The organization now has an advisory board in Sarasota, raising money to help end childhood cancer. The community has been blessed to be able see some of these young children WIN their battle with cancer, some didn’t win, and we were there for them also. - Blue Butterfly provides peer counseling and education to children that have lost a significant person in their life. Sometimes this person is a parent, sibling or twin, a
grandparent that is raising the child. The Foundations support was a part of them becoming a full-time organization with multiple locations where these kids can gather and express their grief to each other with trained personnel nearby. When we began to provide gifts to these kids, Danielle Visone was the only volunteer and now is their full- time manager. She credits LHCF as a major factor in it becoming the organization it is today. - Hannah’s House provides living quarters to abused women and their children. When we heard about them, we knew we needed to help them experience love and enjoyment during the holiday period. Most of the moms and children have snuck away from the abusive relationship with just the clothes on their backs. Often the gift requests include
requests for their new shoes, new pajamas, or a spinning toothbrush. Today they have housing for about twenty-five families. This year we are providing twenty-nine of their kids with holiday gifts. Several of you have also provided clothes and other items throughout the years. - Sunshine Kids is dedicated to children with cancer. Established in 1982, it provides positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. These programs and events are free of charge. The Foundation has provided gifts for these kids for the last four years. We have provided additional gifts to be sent to the hospital treatment rooms to refresh the toys that are worn from years of use. It is not too late to help support the children of these and other organizations! Consider giving up a dinner
out and donating the saved money to the Foundation, give in honor of your grandchildren, or give because like the Grinch - your heart can grow two sizes. The spirit of love and giving is present in The Landings community. Your support and caring for these kids will be a joy to them, but the best part is you can be proud of your part in making the holiday special to them! Use the QR code to donate or adopt a child and change your life.
an afternoon bagging the mulch into earth friendly paper bags (see photo 2 below). Participants included volunteers who have been managing the compost bins on a weekly basis and others compost enthusiasts like the Trebly/Kremer family whose mom, dad, two 15-year-olds, and one 12-year-old all participated in adding to and maintaining the compost station. Amy Kremer had this to say about the compost station: “Great for my kids to have this opportunity in the neighborhood to play a helpful, informed role.” And, hav-
ing managed the site for several months, Susan Singer shared her sentiment that “it was exciting to see it come to fruition”. I venture to say that the Landings Compost Station has fulfilled its pilot study criteria of providing a successful way to use waste for a reusable product, involving the community, bringing generations and neighbors together, and learning about our environment. We look forward to exploring additional locations to serve the community.
Compost Pilot a Success Roadmap to Next Compost Cycle
By Maralyn Kaufman David, LMA Environmental Committee Chairperson The Landings Compost Station is up and running for its second cycle after a successful, full-cycle, pilot study that started in February 2023 and ended in mid-October 2023. Ten percent of households from each Landings association had the chance to participate in the pilot study and at least a dozen enthusiasts dedicated their time to be volunteers to churn the contents of the three bins at a frequency of two times a week for eight months. I managed the site for the first four months. Susan Singer stepped in to manage the site in my absence from
mid-May through October. Tracie Troxler of Sunshine Community Compost volunteered her knowledge at our introductory presentation in January of 2023, our opening day tutorial (see photo 1 below), and her multiple visits helping us maximize our success with tweaks in our browns-to-greens ratios and compost bin repairs! This plan worked well, yet we were reminded that ‘nature has to take its course’, and even with the pilot study limited participation plan, the bins became full by the mid-summer months and the
contents had not fully composted. Therefore, there was a multiple week timespan during which no more additions could be added, and the station was closed. We believe that this is going to be the norm for our current station size and the enthusiastic response of the residents who are participating. The last step in the process of our first cycle, sifting the compost for large bulky items, etc., occurred in late September, when bins 1, 2, and 3 were ready to be sifted and put to good use. As such, Susan and volunteers spent

President’s Report By Beth Cotner The LRC Club was in full swing in November. The highlight of the month was the USTA Father & Son Tennis Tournament. Fifty-eight teams from throughout the U.S. came to The Landings to compete in the tournament. Our club members acted as ambassadors, greeting the team
members, hosting them for meals, and giving guidance about activities in the Sarasota area. Unfortunately, after months without rain, the rain descended on the tournament resulting in many game delays. In addition to the tournament, the club hosted a Veterans Day lunch,
Trivia, a triples social mixer, as well as card games, and the crystal sound bath. A Halloween party was also a popular event with many very interesting costumes. It is nearly election time at The Landings Racquet Club. If you would like to join the board of directors, now
is the time to submit your resume to Kevin for board consideration. If we receive more resumes than board openings (we have three) we will hold an election in January. We are always looking for new board members. I hope to see you at the club!
News from the Court By Adrian “Mo” Moghina I was watching doubles at our annual father and son tournament, and it was fun to see how sometimes you have to throw out basic doubles high percentage principles. The basic strategy was crystal clear to me. Keep the ball away from the son as much as possible and attack the father’s side of the court before they attack your father’s side of the court. The first to do this had an advantage. Basically, make the dad beat you. It is obvious that the father’s tennis level is not the same as the son’s level of tennis. To give your team the best
chance to control the points and win you need to take advantage of the father’s weaknesses on the other team. The sons that really wanted to win had no reservations doing that. They understood that occasionally they will lose some points by playing the other dad but if done correctly that they will win most of the points. Plus, the fathers always know that they have a target on their back. This doesn’t mean that the sons were trying to intentionally hit the dad, but that they were trying to hit very difficult balls to the dads’ side

Most of the time, when you are already at the net and you are receiving a low volley, you should go back to the player’s side of the court that is farthest away from you. In father and son play, you should do that most of the time if that means that you are sending the ball to the other dad. Basically, you are intentionally taking calculated risks knowing that you have a better chance of
winning the point if you play the father as much as possible instead of the other bully (the son). When you go out and play in your league doubles try to realize if there is one player on the other side of the court that is the much weaker player. And try the same strategy as in father and son. In that case you will have the best chance to win. Hope you all have a great holiday season and a happy new year! We will have our social round robin and pro exhibition on Friday December 15th from 2-5 pm. Sign up at the pro shop.

Let’s go over some basic doubles principles when you play players of the same level as you. Most of the time you will return a serve crosscourt back to the server. In father and son, you only want to do that if the server is the dad. Most of the time your first volley when you come to the net should go crosscourt. In father and son, you should hit your first volley most

A few weeks ago, the LRC hosted the USTA National Father/Son Clay Court Championships for the 30 th year. This year we had a record number of teams (64) register to enter the tournament. Unfortunately, we also had a record number of teams withdraw due to illness or injury. When the dust settled, we had 58 teams participate which tied the previous record. Another first this year was the rainy weather. Since I arrived back in 2006, I can only recall three rain delays. It was a shame that Mother Nature decided to bless us with a few rainy days the week of the tournament after we had very little rain this year. Thank you to everyone that took part and especially to Ralph and Dee Ricapito for organizing all the ambassadors. Thanks again for your help in making this a special tournament for all the participants. I am happy to announce the Core
Stretch & Strengthening class will begin again every Monday & Wednesday 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. beginning December 11 th . It will be led again by Daniele Jarmin. Most suitable for participants with current active or athletic lifestyles. Moderate mobility and endurance required. The cost for members is $5.00 per class payable directly to Daniel. The Annual Holiday Happy Hour is scheduled on Wednesday, December 6 th from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Lakeside Clubhouse. DJ Karolina is back to provide the entertainment again. The menu specifics are posted in the Tennis Pro Shop with the signup sheet. The cost is $40 per person. It is limited to the first 100 people signed up so don’t delay!

You should be receiving your annual assessment invoice very soon if it hasn’t arrived already. If you haven’t received it by early December, please contact me in the Tennis Pro Shop. The annual assessment is due on or before January 1 st and will be considered late on February 1 st . To avoid late fees and interest, please be sure your payment arrives before the end of January. Also, please don’t combine your monthly statement and the annual assessment in the same check. Thank you! Finally, if you would like to throw your hat in the ring to serve on the LRC Board of Directors, please submit a brief list of your qualifications to me in the Pro Shop by December 5 th . If there are more people interested in being on the Board than there are spaces available, we will have an election at the Annual Meeting in January.

Stone Crab Season Starts October 15th. Fresh Catch Market & Grill has the Freshest & Best Stone Crabs in Sarasota Area
As frequent visitors to Sarasota, we're not sure how we managed to miss this place in the past. Now that we have found it, we will be back to sample everything. We tried the stone crab chowder and the grouper tacos. Both were delicious and loaded with fish. Our tacos were dressed with a pineapple, watermelon salsa and accompanied by a side of wheatberry salad which had just the right balance of sweet and tangy. Our son also raved about his broiled tripletail which came with fresh green beans and potatoes. Prices, including beer, were reasonable and portions were plentiful.

LMA Seeking Candidates for Board of Directors Do you or someone you know, who owns property in The Landings, have an interest in helping the community represent interests of our residents and prepare for the future? We have a wonderful community that is supported and maintained through guidance of the LMA Board. This is your opportunity to help make a difference. This year there will be four of the nine
board positions up for election, which will be conducted at the February 1, 2024, annual meeting. To be considered, candidates are encouraged to express their interest in running for election by December 10, 2023. Contact Sue Camins (312-320-5930) or John Schmidt (678- 296-0397), Nominating Committee Co-Chairpersons, for more information or to declare interest in being a candidate.
LMA seeks candidates that have experience in the community via participation on one or more LMA committees, previous Board experience with organizations like LMA, or regarding functional skills or capacities in areas reflective of LMA’s Long Term Plan. Photos and bios of all candidates will be published in the January Eagle leading into the election. All candidates will
also have opportunity to engage in an introductory Meet the Candidates meeting on January 18, 2024, where Landings residents and association presidents will have opportunity for an informal question and answer session with each candidate. The Board member term calls for a twoyear commitment of service if elected.

As the residents each shared their unique military experience and “war stories”, there was a deep sense of camaraderie and understanding. It was interesting to learn where each veteran had served and their
perspective about the military. Be it stateside, Europe, Korea, Vietnam or beyond, hearing stories of daily life, survival and hope shed light on the many ongoing battles in the world today. The Veterans Day party was a fun gathering with lunch, goodies, and a promise to celebrate again next Veterans Day with more Landings Veterans who were not able to attend this year.
Celebrating our Veterans By Betty Greenspan
Veterans Day in the United States has its origins in the aftermath of World War I. Originally, it was set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In 1938, through an act of Congress, November 11th was made a legal holiday. In 1954, at the urging of veteran’s service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans”. This change was made
to honor American veterans of all wars. Overall, Veterans Day in the United States and all of its territories celebrate veterans through a combination of solemn remembrance, public recognition, and community events to honor their bravery and sacrifice. This year it was decided that a party would be a great way to honor the veterans living in The Landings. With short notice there was a gathering of 15 residents, 11 of whom were veterans.

Landings Resident Profile
Katy Leidel, an open mind led to extraordinary achievements By Emma Shaughnessy
Whether a person is moving to a new neighborhood or a new continent, adapting to an unfamiliar environment certainly presents its challenges. One Landing’s resident, Katy Leidel, faced that challenge head-on through her rewarding experiences living in cities across the globe. Born in Vienna, Austria, Katy lived in five different countries during her childhood including Germany, Argentina, Mexico, and the United States. She moved every three years because of her father’s work as a diplomat, and jokes she feels like she is 1/3 European, 1/3 American, and 1/3 Latin. Though Katy feels very fortunate to have experienced so many cultures, she admits the language barriers were occasionally a challenge. When she was five, Katy enrolled in a German public elementary school where she learned to read, spell, and write entirely in German.
Later, when she came to the United States in the second grade, she initially struggled to read her English textbooks. After the United States, Katy moved to Argentina and discovered a passion for horses, which grew when her family moved to Mexico. Her trainer had ridden for the Mexican Olympic team in Japan and gave her an excellent foundation in dressage and open jumping, which she competed in successfully. Katy has also spent years volunteering in therapeutic horseback riding programs which benefit individuals with physical and emotional disabilities, including veterans. She has taught them basic riding skills and judged their horse shows, and noted this volunteer work has been her most rewarding experience with horses. After Mexico, Katy returned to the United States for college. While attending Santa Clara University,
Katy had a desire to travel again and convinced the Dean to allow her to participate in a junior study abroad program in Spain as a sophomore. Once she returned, Katy transferred to George Washington University. Katy then paused her college education and moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. After visiting a wholesale veterinary and livestock company in an old tobacco warehouse, Katy suggested the owner convert the front of the building into an English and Western tack store. After presenting an official proposal, the owner agreed, and Katy designed, developed, and managed “The Country Store.” This opportunity was a highlight for her as a young horse woman. While in Knoxville, Katy started making radio and TV commercials and discovered her interest in news. Katy wanted to be a reporter, but most stations would only hire her as a weather girl.
Eventually, she secured a job as a television producer and reporter at an ABC affiliate, and then a news anchor at a Top 40 radio station in Raleigh, North Carolina. After Raleigh, Katy moved to West Palm Beach and taught TV, radio, and film to high schoolers at West Palm Beach School of the Arts. She enjoyed sharing her passion and knowledge with the students and brought in many speakers including Burt Reynolds. Teaching at the school was one of Katy’s most rewarding experiences. Katy earned a degree in business administration from Palm Beach Atlantic College. She raised her son, David, in North Palm Beach then moved to The Landings nearly 15 years ago. Katy’s mother also lives in The Landings, and the two enjoy playing ping pong and tennis together. In addition to being close to family, Katy loves the conviviality and diverse backgrounds of the
residents. She also enjoyed the three years she spent serving on the Security Committee. Katy does not travel as frequently as she used to, but she still enjoys taking trips with her family. They recently went to Greece in honor of Katy’s late brother Michael, who passed away after planning the trip. When reminiscing about their travels together, Katy remarked her time on safari in Africa with Michael and her mother was a highlight. Katy feels blessed for all the special experiences in her life, from being an instructor in therapeutic riding and at the West Palm Beach School of the Arts, to serving her community on the Security Committee. Katy is grateful for her opportunities to learn from new experiences in the United States and abroad, and she proves that working hard and being open minded can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Fright Night in the Neighborhood By Rose Goncalves, Landings Children Club Chair It was a little cooler and darker earlier, the smell of pumpkin spice filled the air. A kaleidoscope of orange, yellow and red mums lined up The Landings houses. Orange lights, harvest wreaths along with different pumpkins decorated the houses front. Giant inflatable monsters, witches, skeletons, bats, and spiders took over The Landings lawns. Guess what? It was that time of the year again; it was boo and spooky time at The Landings. The streets slowly filled up with our favorite Halloween characters in preparation for the trick- or-treat festivities. The giant black cat stood tall at Landings Blvd competing for attention with the massive orange pumpkin on Kestral Pkwy. Suddenly, the houses were transformed into cemeteries and graveyards, scary and friendly ghosts along with monsters, clowns, and jacko- lanterns came out to greet and watch our guests. It was a memorable night! The gate of The Landings opened at 1800 on October 28 and our guests and residents were transported in time to Elm Street, the graveyards of New Orleans, the gate of Mordor, the streets of Salem, different galaxies, Hogwarts, Jurassic Park, and the Multiverse. Both children and adults embraced their imaginations and expressed themselves through the costumes of their choices. As we walked the trail from Landings Blvd to Pine Harrier
Cir, we met Disney princesses, cowgirls, Harry Porter, Ken and Barbie getting treats or tricks. We also saw dinosaurs, Spider Man, Walter White and Saul Goodman, medieval priests, and dragons knocking on doors. The children ran from house to house and enthusiastically rang the doorbells. Each door opened to another world where pirates, goblins, rock stars and witches were passing out candies and treats. In The Landings, they got more treats than tricks. Many residents had live parties entertaining their guests. We continued walking the streets through Peregrine Point; rumor has it that Taylor Swift and a few burners were spotted there. We went down to Kestral Pkwy South and ended up at the haunted house. Each room filled with terrifying oversized dolls inhabited by unruly spirits, flickering lights and shadows added to the sinister atmosphere. Children and guests cringed at each step, moving from one room to another but victorious at the end with their bags filled with treats. Halloween is the only celebration in our community that brings all our residents together with the local community for some transgenerational fun! Everyone channels their inner youth and imagination to be whoever and whatever they want to be. We opened the gate and invited hundreds of friends and families to join in the fun. Everyone displays elaborate costume worthy of Hollywood praise. Each year
has gotten better and bigger. The Landings Children Club, the LRC and the LMA want to thank all our residents who decorated and passed treats to our children and guests. The Landings Halloween Trail and festivities would not have been a success without your dedicated support and participation. A special thank you to Diane Hurter for all the work she puts in making the “Haunted House”.
We also want to recognize our Halloween decorator extraordinaire Doug Day and Louis Goncalves for putting up all the inflatables and cleaning up afterward. Lastly, special thanks to our security staff for keeping this event safe and orderly. See you all next year for more Landings trickor-treats.
Serving the Florida Gulf Coast Since 1975 Welcome to Seascape Aquarium & Pet Center. We have:
CRITTER OF THE MONTH Ball Python Python regius
Our store has many crested geckos available in all sizes and age. Ball pythons are by far the most popular pet snakes for good reason. With a generally placid disposition, they are the perfect snake for beginner and expert handlers alike. Also known as Royal Pythons, they are typically so easy going that ancient Egyptian aristocrats used to "wear" them around their wrists and necks as a sign of high status. The more common name, Ball Python, comes from their tendency to curl up like a ball with their head in the middle when threatened. Youngsters typically start out on a diet of live or "frozen thawed" fuzzy mice and work their way up to larger rats as adults. Captive care is relatively simple as they don't need much more than a snug hiding place, a source of heat, clean water, and a weekly meal to thrive. Typical appearance and behavior • Ball Pythons are bred with a near endless variety of color morphs. Depending on the animals' genetics, they are available in thousands of unique colorations and patterns. • Ball Pythons are typically nocturnal, so they are much more likely to be out and about at night when then lights are off. • Like most other non-venomous snakes, Ball Pythons are constrictors, meaning they quickly grab and coil their bodies around their prey before swallowing the prey whole. • Adults are typically as easy going as it gets, a Ball Python is happy to snuggle up around your neck or arm for as long as their handler pleases.
• 10,000 feet of showrooms • 25,000 gallons of freshwater, salt water and coral.

Security Report By Neil Goldman
The latest incident reports are for the month of October and indicate that The Landings, was a very safe place. Only ten total “incidents” were reported, none of which required police intervention. Many of the “incidents” reported did not concern widespread safety related issues. Examples were a lost cell phone which was found and returned to its owner, a resident’s dog reportedly not on a leash, a vendor working after 5 p.m., and the Landings own security vehicle overheating and needing repairs. One incident, however, was noteworthy as it occurred due to the actions of one of our own residents. A visitor was turned away at the main gate due to not producing a valid driver’s license. That visitor then drove to the north gate entrance to meet a resident and attempt to tailgate into The Landings behind the resident. The resident, in a personal
vehicle, met the visitor outside the north gate to help the visitor tailgate into The Landings. However, when the visitor attempted to tailgate through the gate, the visitor’s vehicle hit the gate, breaking the gate, and causing a piece of the visitor’s vehicle to break off. All of this was caught on LMA video cameras. As a result, the resident has paid for the gate, the RFID has been deactivated, and the visitor has been banned from driving into The Landings for a significant period. Residents, please do not be complicit in tailgating incidents. It could end very badly. Finally, please note that gate staff will be more diligent in asking for and examining driver’s licenses of non-resident vendors and visitors when they come to the main gate. Please have your visitors and vendors cooperate.

Some of us are going to find out what it’s like living to “100”. I believe, living in Sarasota, in The Landings, by the cool sands of Siesta Key Beach, increases our life expectancy at least “10” years. We have the Racquet Club at our disposal where it’s easy to many physical activities to participate in. Your options include workouts in the Fitness room, water aerobics, swimming, walking, pickleball, ping pong, tennis, cycling, cards & mahjong in the library, or enjoying goodies at Koffee Klatch and stimulating conversation with friends. Not to mention all the physical tasks in and around our home! Another key to longevity is preventing falls with balance exercises. Some use trainers that the club provides or their own personal trainers. Joints stiffen, muscles get
weaker and before we know it; there are illnesses, vision problems, or just too many “beers or martinis”where we are likelier to fall. Yet, we all have one thing in common; falls can be prevented! (Yoga, tai chi, core exercises are effective for stability, strength, and balance). So, do what activity sparks your joy now and go with it. Stress is unavoidable. Find time for boosting your well-being, with meditation, or rest, deep breathing exercises, as well as getting a good night’s sleep. I know I feel better when the weather outside is great. Since we are going into season, greeting our friendly snowbirds back, why not try to create and carry our own good weather within each day. Good Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Landings Website Needs Your Photos! By Eddie Goldstein and Bob Manteiga We hope that you’ve had a chance to visit the new Landings Resident website: https://residents. thelandingsofsarasota.com/. The site is a work in progress and we are continually looking for ways to improve it and make it more visually appealing. One idea is to feature photographs taken by our residents of scenes from around The Landings. As you probably have noticed, every page of the website has a header photo. Most pages have the same exact aerial photo, as shown below. (photo 1) This is a nice shot, but it would be ideal to profile different, more relevant photos on each page.
For example, shown below is a photo taken by Bob that appears on the Nature Trail Committee page. (photo 2) While navigating the site and exploring individual committee and association pages, you’ll discover numerous opportunities for unique photos. (If you encounter any log in issues, please email web@ thelandingsofsarasota.com.) Whether you’re an amateur shooting with a phone camera, or a professional using sophisticated equipment, feel free to submit any appealing photographs from around The Landings. Keep in mind the technical challenge: the header dimension
