June Happy Hour Recap
This is the tenth in a series of articles highlighting special volunteers who help to make the Landings such a wonderful community. The Eagle interviewed Amy Drachman for this issue. Lawyer, single mom, and volunteer are just a few of the adjectives that describe Amy Drachman.
Originally from Boston, where she grew up, had a family, and spent her professional life, Amy found a niche for herself as an employment attorney helping technology startup businesses and nonprofit organizations. She worked as in-house counsel for a medical device company and then had her own consulting firm specializing in Human Resource Policy and Compliance. She accomplished all of this during her last ten years in Boston, as a single parent. She did her undergrad work at Barnard College and her law degree at New York University with a specialty in employment law.
She and her family had been visiting a timeshare on Longboat Key since the mid 80’s before she decided, upon retirement, to purchase a home in Sarasota. In 2015, she purchased a home in the city and her mom followed, purchasing a place in The Landings. By 2020 she and her twin sons Ari and Joel (now 17 and students at Sarasota High), moved to a house in The Landings joining her mom.
The landscaping, unique
curved roads, variety of homes and sense of “community” drew her to The Landings.
It didn’t take long for her to get involved with LMA. Recruited by Sue Camins, Amy was asked to join the LMA Governance Committee. Her main activity on the committee has been to review the LMA rules and regulations and bylaws. She will be co-chairing the LMA Nominating Committee with John Schmidt. In addition, Amy serves on the LMA Security and Finance Committees. She has also been asked to review contracts between LMA and the companies working on the roads project.
In her spare time, Amy volunteers with Legal Aid of Manasota, and sits on the board of Temple Sinai, where she is financial secretary and reviews applicants for scholarship assistance.
She enjoys water yoga, gardening, trying out new restaurants and is moving up the ladder playing competitive bridge. This month she will be in Chicago competing in a major bridge tournament with the intent of achieving enough points for her Life Master Designation.
She noted that it has been her dog, Cooper, a Cavalier Prince Charles Spaniel, that has introduced her to so many people in The Landings on their walks. Cooper is known as the explorer, not to be confused with his look alike Cavalier Prince Charles
Spaniel, named Winny, owned by Carole and Malcolm Schwartz. When asked what she would like to improve in The Landings, she said: “I wished it was possible for all members of LMA to have full use of the LRC. Probably the only way for that to happen legally
would be for LMA to purchase the LRC but practically, I don’t think that would fly with homeowners and current members who would be required to pay more to LMA to support the purchase and larger operations.”

The Landings Racquet Club’s mid-June Happy Hour drew a good-sized crowd for an evening of fun music, shared appetizers, and neighborly conversation. Highlighting this social were five talented musicians who gathered for their first-ever jam session. Their rock and roll rhythms had people tapping their feet and occasionally singing and dancing along.
Landings’ resident “The Bass Guy” Michael Cohen, recruited guitarist Eugenio Moleiro-Bellioso and drummer Marc Delisle (also Landings residents), and trombonist Bruce Glasberg, of the band Big Night Out.
If you missed this one, be sure to mark your Calendars for our next Happy Hour on August 23 rd.
Stay tuned for future events when the Fall season kicks into gear
and our snowbird friends return. The LRC Social Committee is working hard to create more moments of musical enjoyment, community spirit, and the opportunity to bring your own unique touch to the celebration. Come and be part of the next memorable experiences at The Landings!

The Landings First Compost Station
COVID Strikes Again; Art Show Rescheduled
Kayak outing set for Feb. 26
at capacity.
By Marie-Louise McHugh
The Environmental Committee had a very successful opening of The Landings compost station on February 16 th , with about 35 Landings residents in attendance. Tracie Troxler, of Sunshine Community Compost, was also in attendance and gave a wonderful orientation and answered dozens of questions!
We are sorry to have to announce that because of a major outbreak of COVID-19 at The Landings, all indoor activities at the Landings Racquet Club have been cancelled until further notice. This includes the scheduled return of the Landings Artists Art Show. We have a new date for this event: Saturday, February 11th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The volunteers tasked with aerating the compost and making sure the bins and site are in good condition have been diligent, and as of late April, the three bins are already
Kayaks galore! There has been so much interest and activity surrounding kayaking activities that another adventure is planned for Sunday, February 26th at 10 a.m., launching from the Nature Trail.
In keeping with the enthusiasm shown for the compost station by residents in all Landings associations, we initiated a plan for 10% of the households of each neighborhood association to be eligible to use the site for the first 16-18 weeks of use (mid-February through mid-June or July).
We are pleased with this robust response of residents in each association. Many thanks to Silke Cuff for suggesting

the idea of a compost program, the LMA for approving this venture, the Landscape Committee Chairperson (Paul Weiner) for arranging the landscaping of the site, the volunteers who are monitoring the station, and all participants for their enthusiasm.
Once again, John McFetridge has agreed to pilot this outing. It has been posted on TeamReach, but we wanted to make sure that all were informed. if you have not done so already, we encourage you to sign up on TeamReach. We expect to receive help from other experienced kayakers for those who are
LHA Meeting Notes
The Landings Homeowners Association held its regularly scheduled board meeting on January 12th at 5:00 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club.
The board approved landscape changes on Pine Harrier Circle and
Our January 21st outing at Turtle Beach was quite the success. There were more than 36 people who joined the outing, most of whom then gathered for lunch at a nearby restaurant.
We look forward to ‘harvesting’ the compost sometime in June or July and to the possible establishment of additional compost sites within the various neighborhood associations.
John led that with assistance provided by Wayne Trotter.

The next regular meeting is at 6:00 p.m. February 9th, in the Poolside Room at the Landings Racquet Club followed by the Association’s Annual Meeting of
Members at 7:00 p.m.
Meeting material will be mailed or, if the member has so elected, emailed to each member. Please return the proxy or register on-line to be sure we have a quorum for the meeting.

Summer in Florida is a great time to practice correcting your weaknesses. The league matches are over, and you have a few months to practice on the parts of your game you learned you need to improve in without the pressure of winning.
One of the most important things to practice is serving with the correct grip. The best grip to serve with is the continental grip also known as the hammer grip. This grip is very easy to find. Hold your racquet with the edge of the racquet head facing the ground as if you had a hammer in your hand. The continental grip gives you the most leverage for
spin and power on your serve. It puts your forearm in a position to pronate very naturally without you forcing that action to happen.
Pronation is very important to achieve more racquet speed. It’s like your forearm, wrist, and fingers are snapping to make the racquet go faster. Basically, when pronation occurs properly, your forearm twists to create the palm facing down position of your hand. People that have learned to throw a ball correctly usually can learn to serve much easier than someone who has never been taught to throw. That’s because to throw a ball correctly you need pronation to occur.
If you are interested in learning the continental grip this summer to help you serve better, take a lesson with Jen, Sandra, or me to help you develop the correct habit from the beginning.
It is extremely sad that we suddenly lost Lil Peltz to leukemia in June. I will always remember her beautiful smile, kindness, and her incredible positive attitude. She was also a national champion many times and part of the USA world championship team. We will have a social round robin on Friday July 28 from 9:30 -11 a.m. Sign up at the pro shop.
See you on the courts.
As many club members started their northern migration, the activity level at the club diminished in June. Nonetheless, we hosted a happy hour, a Koffee Klatch, and a tennis round robin.
During June, the fitness center was updated with new paint and floor coverings. Also, the pool’s water heater was replaced as was the hot water tank.
Tragically, a member died in June after collapsing in the hot tub. As a reminder, please do not use the hot tub for more than the fifteen to twenty minutes recommended by doctors. Especially, as we age, our tolerance for heat diminishes. Your core
temperature will rise and you may experience fainting or dizziness if the recommended time is exceeded. Please stay healthy and safe and have an enjoyable summer.
A poem can weave its words with finesse, To celebrate mental toughness, and success. With every swing, a battle is waged, Where strength & spirit cannot be caged. Each point a conquest, towards the win, Yet losses felt, for growth lies within. With every setback, the fire still ablaze, Tennis is a passion that never decays. Through rivalry fierce, a respect takes flight, As warriors battle, with all their might. So, here’s to tennis, it’s challenges grand, Its work is woven by a skillful hand. Mental toughness the courts demand, Through sweat & perseverance, Players rise — it feels grand! It’s a beautiful game!
On Monday, May 29 th , for the first time since 2019, we had our Memorial Day BBQ. It was nice to have a BBQ again after missing so many during the pandemic. Over 120 people attended the event including 22 military veterans. Thank you to our very own Gary Bowen and Jeremy Jones who grilled the burgers and hot dogs for everyone in attendance. I’d also like to thank Dee Ricapito for helping me do the prep work in the kitchen prior to the event and the group of ladies that helped me clean up in the kitchen after the festivities ended. Memorial Day is easily one of the most challenging days of the
year for me. It wouldn’t be possible without volunteer help from the kindhearted members. Our next BBQ will be on September 4 th for Labor Day. The Fitness Center improvements were completed during the month of June. The new paint and flooring look fantastic. The rubberized floor is better suited for the Fitness Center than carpet. It is much more durable, easier to clean, and won’t get stained like the carpet does. Thank you to everyone on the committee that played a role in bringing this project to fruition including but not limited to Paul Weiner, Paige Packman, Tobi
Schneider, and Randy Harms. In August, we will begin the annual tennis court resurfacing. Like we do every year, two courts will be offline at a time until all eight are pristine again. The goal is to have the project done by the end of September. If Mother Nature cooperates with us during the project, we should have no problem achieving our goal. With only six courts playable at any given time, I strongly encourage players to make their court reservations in advance regardless of the time of day they wish to play.

Sound Vibrations with Sally Sammons
By:DeeRicapito
Sally Sammons resides in The Landings and holds crystal sound bath sessions twice a month at the Racquet Club.
Always drawn to caring for others, Sally joined the American Red Cross participating in numerous disaster responses. Later she transferred to the Armed Forces Emergency Services Department of the Red Cross supporting the military and then deployed to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq supporting troop welfare.
Retiring in 2011, Sarasota and The Landings gave her a sense of energy. Her exploration of the many facets of energy healing pointed toward becoming a Reiki Master; Healing Touch Practitioner; Certified Yoga Nidra Master; and Sound & Vibrational Healing Practitioner.
We are fortunate that she is committed to making this process of overall well-being available to everyone.
“Attending a sound bath invites deep rest and relaxation” says Sally. A typical sound bath might include a combination of crystal and Himalayan singing bowls, chimes, gongs, drums, and voice that allow participants to experience head to toe therapeutic vibrations and frequencies to clean and balance the mind, body and spirit. Join the class because Sally knows how to strike a “chord” with everyone, delivering soothing vibrations and leaving them feeling crystal-clear!

As frequent visitors to Sarasota, we’re not sure how we managed to miss this place in the past. Now that we have found it, we will be back to sample everything.
We tried the stone crab chowder and the grouper tacos. Both were delicious and loaded with fish. Our tacos were dressed with a pineapple, watermelon salsa and accompanied by a side of wheatberry salad which had just the right balance of sweet and tangy. Our son also raved about his broiled tripletail which came with fresh green beans and potatoes. Prices, including beer, were reasonable and portions were plentiful.

Free College Update
ByJohnBruno
Free College will continue to serve as an intellectual resource for The Landings community in 2023-24.
This year, the management of the Free College will transition to a four-person committee (John Bruno, Chair; Mona Poyta; Teresa Manteiga; and Frank Pipers). The Free College’s main offering will continue to be the weekly, one-hour presentations designed to inspire and educate members of LMA. We will continue to draw interesting speakers from our Landings’ neighbors, but we will also make a greater effort to attract outside speakers representing greater Sarasota’s Arts, Science, and Technology spaces.
Two significant changes are currently being discussed by the planning committee. First, we are looking to move-up the start date to early January (finishing end of April) to accommodate more speakers. Second, we will experiment this year with one or two ‘short courses’ which will serve as lively discussion groups on contemporary issues. Short courses will be designed
for a more in-depth survey of a contemporary topic [e.g., ‘how is medicinal treatment changing in our lifetime’; ‘should I fear advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning’; ‘how do NIL payments and portal transfers affect college sports - has amateur athletics died along with the NCAA’]. The short courses will meet three times and will feature an over-view from an expert moderator followed by open discussion among the participants.
The committee will encourage The Landings’ community to shape the roster of speakers (for individual talks or short courses) by soliciting an ‘open call’ for speakers (selfnominations are permitted). This nomination will require a tentative title, a brief abstract addressing the importance/appeal of the talk, and contact information for the speaker.
Nominations for speakers (inside or outside of LMA) will be due to the planning committee by September 1 st , 2023. Please send to Bruno.1@ osu.edu.

Longboat Key has a beautiful stretch of beach connecting to Lido Key on the south and Anna Maria Island on the north.
As you walk onto Whitney beach and head north you will arrive at Beer Can Beach which faces the inlet across from Coquina Beach.

There is little public beach access and very limited parking. Many of the homes, once small winter bungalows have now been transformed into mega homes and mini mansions, some of the most expensive properties in Florida. If you stay at one of the many cottages or hotels on the beach you have access to the 11 miles of glorious white sand with minimal crowds and lots of privacy.
The very popular Bayfront Park is located at 4052 Gulf of Mexico Drive and is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The park boasts beautiful views of Sarasota Bay and offers many activities. Amenities found at Bayfront Park include a 1,350 square foot indoor recreation center, a playground, a basketball court, shuffleboard courts, a multi-purpose open field, 3 dedicated pickle-ball courts, a tennis court, picnic tables, restrooms, and parking for public beach access located across the street.
Longboat Key’s public beaches have 11 access areas, indicated by Public Beach Access signs, and offer beautiful Gulf views without the usual beach crowds. There are a few small parking areas along or across from the public beach entrances (e.g., Whitney Beach on the north end).
Although there are no amenities, these beaches offer beautiful white sands and graceful sea oats.
Beer Can beach offers a stunning place for picnics, parties, fishing, swimming, and sunbathing. It’s essentially a onemile stretch of sandy beach which wraps around the northern tip of Longboat Key. Shifting sand and beach erosion often changes the shape in this area. It can also be reach by boat through Longboat Pass. You’ll often find boats anchored out and many rafted together. You can easily enjoy all day picnicking, bird watching, sunning, swimming, and hunting for sand dollars in this area.

Another great place to explore, across Gulf of Mexico Drive on the east side of the island is The Historical Village established in the 1800s with its colorful bungalows which are fast disappearing and being replaced by mega beach cottages.
Even the famous Peacocks that once inhabited the village have been relocated because they became a nuisance, so I’m told.
Across the bridge at the north end of Longboat Key over Longboat Pass, Anna Maria Island’s Coquina Beach lined with beautiful Australian Pines offers a shaded area to picnic and barbecue. A boat launch is located across the street on the bay side.
Families enjoy this park because of
its full-service concession stand, ample parking, barbecue pits, picnic facilities, playground, beach volleyball, restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. Hours 6 a.m. – 12 a.m.
I love taking a break from the beach scene to walk around Bridge Street. Cute shops and great eateries line the street. Little colorful houses surround the area as well. Bridge Street Bistro, Is a favorite dining place!
North of Coquina Beach, Gulf of Mexico Drive twists and turns past Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach and fi nally ends at Anna Maria Beach on the island’s northern end. Each area has good parking and fun places to explore.
Little shops and restaurants dot the surrounding area. There is even a Publix opposite the Manatee Ave Bridge. Take the time and explore some of the small roads off Gulf of Mexico Drive to see the interior of the island narrow as it is. Do check out the charming little Visitors Information center for the latest info about the island.

Parlor face the recently rebuilt Municipal Pier. Of special note, Mote Marine opened a small laboratory and aquarium at the end of the Municipal Pier.
Be sure to walk up Pine Ave. and explore the funky shops and bars. Slightly north, The Rod and Reel Pier Restaurant is a great fishing spot. We spotted dolphins and manatees swimming round the area. Bean Point Beach is at the north end of the island. Beautiful with absolutely no parking but you can walk there from the Rod and Reel.
Best of all there was no traffic as we headed up Longboat to Anna Maria and no traffic going back. Now, definitely, is the time to visit!

Native Anole Lizards – Battling for Survival in The Landings
ByHansHawrysz
One very prevalent Landings animal is a small lizard that you see scurrying everywhere. It is not a Gecko or a Chameleon but an Anole! What you may not realize is that these small lizards are a focal of point for research on the impact of invasive species on native ones and how they adapt to new competition. They are players in an evolutionary drama playing out in front of our eyes.
The Anole is a member of a large and diverse family of 95 species of small lizards – the Dactyloidae, that are also related to Iguanas. Their primary territory is the southeast US, Central America, and the Caribbean. Cuba is an epicenter for Anoles with over 60 species on the Island. The evolution of anoles has been widely studied, and they have been described as a “textbook example of adaptive radiation and convergent evolution.” This has attracted the attention of scientists and resulted in comparisons with Darwin’s finches of the Galapagos Islands, lemurs of Madagascar, and cichlid fish in the African Great Lakes. All of which succeed by opportunistically adapting to specialized niches.
The only Anole species native to the U.S. is the Carolina or Green Anole, Anolis carolinensis
(Picture 1). These lizards are about 2 – 4 “ in length and are opportunistic feeders that primarily eat insects of all kinds. They also have some interesting features and behaviors:
- They can turn their skin from green to brown based on stimuli like mood, stress, social signaling i.e., dominance. They can’t change their skin to match the background like true Chameleons that live in East Africa and Madagascar…of which there are now a few populations in Florida (Picture 2).
- They can lose their tail and regenerate a new one.
- They have specialized nails and pads on their feet that allow them to cling to many surfaces. This is why you can see them on branches or hanging on a wall.
- The males very territorial which may be as small as a patio or deck. The males will defend their territory and fight other males who threaten them. When threatened they extend their colored dewlaps and bob slowly but when courting females they exhibit elaborate displays of extending their brightly colored dewlaps while bobbing up and down rapidly, almost doing a dance (Picture 3). Scientific observation has shown that males with
the largest and most colorful dewlaps attracts more females and have a stronger bite force.
- Green Anoles are thought to be capable of seeing a larger range of the UV spectrum, and that the dewlap reflects ultraviolet light for attracting mates.
- Anoles are also a major food source for snakes, and birds like blue jays. We have all seen herons quietly stalking anoles on branches.
The Cuban Brown Anole Invades Florida
The first documented reptile introduction into Florida is Anolis Sagrei, or Cuban or Brown Anole (Picture 4) that was accidently imported with cargo coming to the Florida Keys from Cuba sometime around 1900 and began spreading northward. By the early 2000’s, their territory has extended to all the counties in Florida, and they have been outcompeting the native Green Anole for control of the ground and lower vegetation territory. The Brown Anoles also do very well in areas that have been modified by humans i.e., condo’s, houses, landscapes etc. that create favorable environments for them and where they have rapidly achieved extraordinarily high population densities.
In many ways, the Cuban Anoles look the same as the native Green Anole, but they are bigger and
more aggressive. They cannot be green like the Carolina Anole and are typically brownish with small spots on their sides. The most prevalent Cuban Anole in our area is the Crested Cuban Anole which looks like a minute dinosaur (See Picture).
To deal with this threat, scientists have found that the native Green Anole, in only 30 -40 generations have evolved to develop better foot pads which allows them to achieve dominance in the higher elevations of bushes, trees and buildings. These are the territories where the Cuban Anoles can’t compete as effectively given their more limited ability to climb and cling. The Green Anole is now evolving to live in environments that require better climbing and clinging abilities. The speed of evolution is changing scientists’ ideas about how fast evolution and genetic adaptation can occur when a species facing sudden and dramatic crisis.
Next time you see Anoles running around you will be seeing a drama of species survival and the ending is yet to be written.

Most fishermen boast and keep track of the size or quantity of fish they catch. At the gazebo, there are many other things to note and observe when fishing.
This time of year, manatees can be seen swimming next to the gazebo, as well as porpoises, alligator gar, schools of large mullet, ospreys, eagles, and a vast array of other birds.
In addition, the Fish Whisperer likes to note special features of individual fish. Did you know that sheepshead fish have teeth that look like human teeth? Behind the bottom row of teeth are grinders that enable sheepshead fish to eat its favorite foods, barnacles, crustaceans, oysters, clams, and crabs.
As you can see from the photos
below, fish can be very colorful.
Rob Manteiga was out fishing with the Fish Whisperer at the gazebo and caught a yellowtail jack crevalle, one of the better fighting fish for its size in Florida. See the unique bright yellow colors on its fins and tail.
Mangrove snappers have reddish scales and a beautiful orange circle around its eyes. Yes,
even crabs caught at the gazebo can have beautiful colors.
If you or your guests would like to learn to fish at the gazebo and experience the wonders of nature in our little piece of paradise, contact the Fish Whisperer at nfpconsultingresources@gmail. com.

Goin to the Dogs
How many dogs are named after an opera? An opera composed by Giacomo Puccini. Well, I am. I love my name, Manon. Manon Lescaut is the opera based on a novel.
I am a small standard white poodle who was purchased by my owner, Paul Weiner, at a puppy mill. Even so, according to my owner I am the best. No matter where we are born, a good home was all one lucky dog needed.
My favorite time is playing tug of war with Paul. I bring my toy to him, and he pulls like crazy! I take
turns sleeping with my owners and adore going for walks.
My owners always let me share in their ice cream by allowing me to lick the bowl clean. Bob Goodman, our neighbor, is a favorite friend of mine mainly because he hands out the best treats in our neighborhood.
I’m proud of my roots and blessed to be named after an opera. I think Manon is a very classy name for a classy and sassy poodle. Don’t you?

Siesta Key Watermelon Mojito Popsicles
July begins with a bang, as we celebrate the Fourth of July, Independence Day, with parades, picnics, and, of course, fireworks!
I’m sure the fireworks sales around the 4th of July must be booming.
Today, I’m feeling red, white, and blue all over.
What is more patriotic than the fourth of July?
The half of July
July’s - Juicy Watermelon Salad
(Meanwhile the month is filled with blazingly hot and humid days, along with warm, sultry nights).
It’s so hot that my computer froze.
What’s got 99 balls and makes old ladies sweat? Bingo.
Which runs faster, hot, or cold? Hot, everyone can catch a cold.
Feeling parched?
Cut a cool wedge of watermelon or cut it in cubes tossed with chopped mint leaves and fresh lime juice. It’s healthy and refreshing.
The secret ingredient in a great watermelon salad
Once you have a good watermelon and good feta, you’re almost done here! All you’ve got to do is toss that watermelon with some
lemon juice, extra-virgin olive oil, and chopped mint, then sprinkle it with feta, and you’ll have yourself a great little salad. But if you want to really dress that salad up, just remember that you’re not fully dressed till you’re zestfully dressed.
The Fish Whisperer always enjoys teaching people how to fish. While most of his students are children, Bruce Reznick, a new homeowner in The Landings, had a great day for his first time fishing at the gazebo. If you want to learn how to fish, or just want to have an experience fishing at the gazebo,
Adding some chopped lemon zest is just what my watermelon, feta, and mint salad was looking for.
Happiness Is…The Joys of Summer
The warm sun kisses your skin, the laughter of children fills the air, the cool ocean water laps at your toes. Summer is here, and it’s time to celebrate with fireworks and the quintessential tradition that brings joy to all - ICE CREAM!
At Abel’s Ice Cream, we believe that nothing captures the essence of summer in America quite like the timeless classics. Picture yourself savoring a scoop of our award-winning smooth and creamy Vanilla ice cream, crafted with the finest ingredients to create a taste that is truly exceptional. Or perhaps
you’re in the mood for a refreshing treat that pays homage to the South—our luscious Peach ice cream, brimming with juicy peaches that would make any Southerner proud.
But our ice cream adventure doesn’t stop there. Step into our air-conditioned store and treat yourself to your favorite cup or cone, or why not indulge in the ultimate summer delight—a mouthwatering banana split? And for those looking to quench their thirst with a cool, creamy beverage, our selection of handcrafted shakes offers flavors to satisfy every craving.
The Landings January bike outing to Myakka Park was a great success. Lots of gators and wildlife seen throughout the park including this limpkin, pictured above. The Bird and Canopy Walk were closed due to Hurricane Ian damage but we were able to identify some great hiking trails to explore on our own and during future visits.
We have Artisan Breads!
The team at Abel’s Ice Cream is excited to celebrate our nation’s independence with you. As we serve up the best ice cream in town, we invite you to create cherished memories with loved ones, one delightful scoop at a time. So, join us in embracing the spirit of summer and indulge yourself with a sweet treat today!
