When Ag nes Schipper and her husba nd, Joh n Ca rson, moved to Sarasota in 2013, they found a welcoming com mun it y with great tennis fac i l it ie s at T he Landings. Schipper was an avid tennis player but had to stop playing after s evera l s er iou s injuries. To keep in shape, she now Agnes Schipper enjoys her walks throughout The Landings as well as her aerobics and Zumba classes. Little did she know that she would have to face the COVID-19 pandemic and change her way of life for the time being. She feels very fortunate that, here in Sarasota, she could still enjoy the outdoors and, as she describes it, a “modified arts life” with outdoors concerts and theater. Schipper is a native of New York City. She also lived in Minneapolis and North Carolina and worked as a newspaper reporter, as an editor, then as a lawyer for the Mayo Clinic, among other corporations. After retiring in Sarasota, she became involved in various organizations as Continued on page 19

The Landings Free College is back after our Covid-19 break. The revived season began on February 24th. Irv Kushner was originally supposed to give this talk in March 2020, but Covid-19 supervened. Now, two years late, is rescheduled to present Irresistible; Statues that people can’t refrain from touching, rubbing, or even kissing. There is an amazingly large number of such statues around the world; you will be amazed! It’s possible to make a trip around the world, hopping from one irresistible statue to another. Warning! This talk is rated PG - 13. M a r c h 3rd : Joh n Br u no, t he Emer it u s Di st i ng u i shed P rofe s sor of Psyc holog y, Neuroscience, and Psychiatry at The Ohio State University, will present Lessons Learned from a 40-Year Career of Studying Healthy and ‘Broken’ Brains. John is an internationally renowned researcher and teacher. He holds BS degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD in psychology/pre-clinical neuroscience from The Johns Hopkins University. His talk will highlight several success stories of treating aging or damaged brains and some of the enduring puzzles yet to be solved. March 10th: Agnes Schipper will tell us about her book to be published in May: Sabine’s Odyssey. In it, she relates the story of her mother’s experiences growing up in Germany and as a hidden child in the Netherlands during World War II; she lived underground in nine Continued on page 22

LMA Annual Meeting & Monthly Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt The LMA Held their annual meeting on February 3rd. Here is a recap of the minutes of the annual meeting.

ANNUAL MEETING

LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky called the Annual Meeting to order and presented his Annual Report: • The minutes of last year’s annual meeting were presented and approved. • Olshansky reported there were great accomplishments and great challenges over the past year. • The drainage and Peregrine Roads project were completed. Plans for road work throughout the rest of the community

are nearly concluded. During this process, the board worked closely with associations and the LRC to consider repaving parking areas as well. • Work on Lakes will continue going forward. • Repairs and improvements have been made to the gazebo, Tree House bridge and nature trail. • Residents now have a place to store their kayaks near the water. • The Eagle Committee has continued to improve The Landings publication and work has begun on improving the technology, communication, and website.
