By Emma Shaughnessy Discovering one’s passion can be a daunting yet rewarding task. The pressure placed on many students to work in certain industries often prevents them from exploring other areas of interest. However, one Landing’s resident, Dr. John Bruno, was able to discover his passion for neu roscience a nd biomedical research, transforming his interests into a successful and admirable career. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied biology and chemistry. After graduating from Pitt in 1975, he attained his Master’s and PhD at Johns Hopkins University in Behavioral Neuroscience. John in itially plan ned to become a medical doctor but found that he preferred researching new medical t reat ment s i n t he lab orator y. Af ter complet i ng postdocs i n neuropharmacology and clinical neuroscience, John returned to Pitt for six years as an assistant professor of neuroscience. In 1986, he received an offer to work at

Ohio State University (OSU). John worked at OSU for 34 years, serving the last three years as the Chairman of the Psychology Department. He also served for 15 years as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and NCAA. His role involved assuring compliance with Big Ten and NCAA rules, monitoring admission decisions of OSU’s student athletes, and travelling with various teams. Looking back on his career, John notes how much he loved being on campuses around young minds, and commented, “The stimulation and the intellectual buzz of being on a campus… makes you feel young in spirit and in intellect.” He remains proud of the research conducted in his laboratory at OSU on the neurochemistry of the brain and how it mediates normal and abnormal behavior. He prides himself on publishing over 200 papers, graduating 18 PhDs that work in labs and hospitals around the world, and seeing how the legacy of his lab lives on. Continued on page 19
