The LMA Finance Committee has submitted the following budget for board approval at the upcoming meeting on November 4th. The proposed budget has been developed to maintain the annual assessment at $1,305 per unit, which is the same amount as the 2020 assessment. The 2022 operating budget was reduced from 2021 levels based on actual expense t rends a nd a projected operat i ng i ncome su r plus. For background, the budget is developed to match revenues and expenses so that there is no income at the end of the year.

The reduction in operating expenses is being offset with increases in several reserve accounts such as Lakes and Drainage. The Roads reserve is being maintained at prior year levels but will be reevaluated for next year upon the completion of the anticipated roads repaving project.

This past month your board approved three major projects, a l l wh ic h w i l l i mp r ove ou r community, raise property values a nd cont ribute to pedest ria n safety.

The signage committee, chaired

by Joan Koplin, proposed a plan that was approved by the board that includes the removal and replacement of wooden signage t h roughout The La ndi ngs with longer lasting aluminum.

The new sig ns will be easier to see, especially at night and will provide a consistent design throughout the community.

The Roads Committee, chaired

by Elida Ramberger, held a wellattended educational meeting with residents and came to the board with a recommendation on t he ne ed to do a l l of t he remaining roads, an estimate on how much it may cost, how large a potential assessment may be required and how we can finance the project. There has been a lot of misinformation about the roads project.

1. The board decided to do all of the remaining roads at one time. The reason was that the cost, compared to spreading it out over several years, will save LMA Members over $1 million.

If we did them a section every 3 -5 yea rs t he assessments to residents would be much greater than whatever it will be under the new plan.

2. The assessments are separate from the annual fee which covers the operating budget.

3. Requests for proposals will be submitted to road contractors and bids should be coming in after the first of the year.

4. We will not know the full cost and/or need for assessments until we select the winning bid.

5. Actual work on the roads may not begin until next Spring.

Once we know if and how much an assessment will be necessary, we will send out notices to all owners who will have 60 days to pay the full amount without i ncu r ri ng late cha rges. More discussion on the process and b i l l i n g p r o c e du r e s f o r a n y potential assessments will be discussed at the November 4th Board meeting.

Given our ag ing in frast ructure and desi re to keep our operat i ng expenses down, this will be a challenging year. However, the current plan envisions a modest increase in the annual LMA fee.

LMA Meeting Notes LMA President Norm Olshansky began the meeting by announcing the following during his president’s report: • The minutes were approved from the last LMA meeting.

• Three important topics will be discussed at this meeting involving significant expenses. This includes: 1. The Signage Committee report, requiring a decision to avoid price increases.

2. The Roads Com m it tee report, including an estimate of expenses and financing options.

This expense will be the largest in the LMA Board’s history.

3. The Finance Committee will present their first draft of the 2022 budget. The proposed budget will be published in the November Eagle and brought to a vote at the December LMA meeting.

• T he La ndoliers beg i n rehearsals in October. This fun and entertaining group welcomes new participants.

• Congratulations to all who participated in the redecoration of the Lakeside Room. Next month’s meeting will likely be held in this newly upgraded space.

• The National USTA Father/Son Tennis Tournament will be hosted

by The Landings Racquet Club in November. Team Ambassadors are still needed. Contact the Dee Ricapito for details if interested.

• Submissions to The Landings Eagle newspaper and Landing’s website are encouraged. A few suggest ion s i nclude photos, blogs, cla ssi f ieds, vendor

recommendations, Pet of the Month, stories to share and letters to the editor. Residents who utilize a business who advertises in the Eagle, are asked to relay you saw the ad in the Eagle newspaper to the business owner to encourage further advertising.

• The Nominating Committee will soon begin recruitment of potential board members for the next year. All interested may contact Nominating Committee Chair, Joan Koplin.

• Two new kayak racks have been installed along the Nature Trail.

Anyone interested in renting a slot should contact Gary Kurnov.

• A question from a resident regarding a driveway extension was referred to the Landing’s Homeowners Association who has jurisdiction in that area.

FINANCE REPORT

Tr e a s u r e r, G a r y K u r n o v reported during the month of August, expenses exceeded income by $13,000 primarily because delayed expenses were paid up in landscaping and security. Year-todate, income is exceeding expenses by $37,000.

Eight delinquent accounts remain to be paid. Intent to lien letters from LMA’s attorney have been sent to each owner. The cumulative amount of delinquent accounts totaled $13,500, down from $78,000 at the beginning of the year. Kurnov thanked Sue Alt for her efforts to expedite collections.

The 2022 draft of the budget is not dramatically different from the

2021 budget. Only a few budget categories were adjusted. The roads budget category will be reduced due to the major paving project. roads maintenance, etc. will not be as high after the re-paving project is completed. The maintenance side of the budget will likely be reduced as well, as sign maintenance will not be required after new signs are erected. The safety and security budget will be increased slightly.

You will find a complete draft of the 2022 budget elsewhere in this issue.

A motion was made to approve the preliminary budget for publication in The Eagle. The motion passed.

MANAGERS REPORT

La nd i ng ’s Ma n ager, Steve Brocken sh i re repor ted t he following: • Brockenshire thanked all committees for their professionalism and hard work.

• Arg us, the company Brockenshire works for, was sold a few months ago and he’s not entirely certain of changes that will be made moving forward. As he becomes aware of them he will notify the LMA.

SIGN STUDY COMMITTEE

Committee chair, Joan Koplin reported her committee was formed to study all aspects of signage in the community as so many signs were in poor condition. One hundred fifty signs of different sizes, shapes, typefaces, designs and seven different Eagle styles stand in The Landing’s community. Most residents believe there are too many

signs and many are distracting to drivers. The committee focused on signs which are LMA’s responsibility.

Combining many stop and street signs to increase pedestrian safety and traffic was a high priority.

Regional and national sign companies were solicited to provide bids. A list of signs, their locations, composition and specifications were provided to each of the companies solicited. Guidelines for the bidding process were also provided. The committee wanted signs to be distinctive yet easy to read, utilizing reflective lettering and to be able to stand the test of time. Bids were solicited from six companies. Four companies responded with bid proposals. The four bids were narrowed to two before the committee selected and recommended Forsite, a National sign company based in Jacksonville, to the board. Forsite agreed to delay their price increase until October 20th. Their current bid estimate is $80,700 which included a lifetime warranty. Koplin said, “The maintenance on these signs should be pretty minimal.” A community meeting among all Association Presidents will take place before the Board moves forward. A power point presentation will be presented at the meeting and any questions will be answered at that time.

A motion was made to approve Forsite as the vendor for new signage as specified, not to exceed $85,000 for fiscal year 2022 pending the meeting among all Association Presidents. After discussion, the motion passed.

ROADS

Committee Chairman, Elida Ramberger reported the single implementation analysis has been completed. The total actual cost will not be known until they receive bids from contractors. The difference between a single implementation and a 4-stage implementation plan is approximately $1.3 million. As such, a single implementation plan would mean a considerable reduction in costs to the community.

The committee favors the single implementation plan because it is a cost effective approach and it’s less disruptive. Once bids are solicited they believe the bid process will take about six weeks. Construction may be able to begin around March 2022 and end near the beginning of May. Following this timetable should eliminate most delays caused by weather.

A motion was made to approve a single restoration implementation and to direct Santec to solicit bid proposals from contractors after the Roads Committee has approved final construction plans expected on October 18.

During the 25 minute discussion which followed the mot ion, a genera l est i mated cost was revealed of $3.7 million for the single implementation strategy. This estimate could go up or down once the bid process is completed.

For our seasonal residents who spend their summers away from Sarasota, welcome back!

Some have already returned, and others will be heading back soon. Now that it is Novemb er, cooler t e mp e r at u r e s a r e here and the activity level around the Club is starting to pick back up.

We will be starting up some of our social functions as well. Be sure to check the calendar for your favorites like Happy Hour, Trivia Challenge and the ever-popular Koffee Klatches.

November also means it is time for our annual Father/Son tournaments.

The dates this year are November 16th – 21st.

T h e USTA h a s c h a ng e d t h e format for all Category 1 National Championships. All the teams in the draw will be separated into

pools. They will play two out of three sets with a match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set against all the teams in their pool.

The top teams will then advance to the main draw.

This means more matches for all the teams and more tennis for the spectators to watch.

Beginning November 1st, the Peak Time rule goes back into effect. It states that if you have a guest in your group at 9:30 AM, you can only reserve the court one day in advance.

Also, from November 1st through April 30th, the guest fee for tennis is now $10 all day regardless of what time your match begins. The fee for non-members using the facilities for exercise classes, card games and other social activities is still $3 per time. Please see me in the Tennis Pro Shop if you have any questions about the Club’s guest policy.

I am very excited to have the father and son national tour nament back to our beautiful club.

When you come to watch the tournament, notice the strategy and the specific tactics of the teams to problem solve and give their team the best chance to win.

This pairing of old school and the modern game players is the ultimate chess game of understanding the geometry of the court in order to not lose control of the points.

It’s a team effort but it pays to have obvious strengths and have very little weaknesses.

T h i s w i l l b e my fou r t h tournament to watch and here are some of the key strengths of the players that I have seen.

The best fathers can neutralize the other son’s shots and frustrate them into taking lower percentage shots. The father has to be able to listen and take orders from the son.

He can’t afford to be a big liability on the court since he

Which means his son at the net has to be a big distraction for the retuning team to help the father hold serve. The father has to have great hand skills for fast hands and for touch and feel to hit effective drop shots, angles, and lobs.

The father has to not make positioning errors and every time he gets to touch the ball not set up the other team for a finishing shot.

The son has to be a bully (play very aggressively but with good sportsmanship) on the court especially at the net. The son has to figure out the best shot selection to hit so that he either will force an error or not lose control of the point. He has to have great footwork and speed to cover the majority of the court. And he has to have great command of his spin, heights, placements, pace, angles and geometry of

game for 50 years, I feel both of them are top notch in this department. No matter your level, you can improve your game with them. I encourage to you either take a lesson from them or join one of their clinics.

LANDINGS RESIDENT PROFILE — Thanksgiving is soon approaching, which means now is the time to express gratitude.

Giving gifts, doing good deeds, and volunteering are just a few ways that people make those around them feel special. One Landings resident, Ralph Hall, has devoted his life to giving back to others through his career in education and his volunteer work with Meals on Wheels.

Ralph was bor n i n the small town of Collierville on t he out sk i r t s of Memph is, Tennessee. Growing up, Ralph was su r rou nded by teachers whom he admired. His mother was a teacher, his aunt taught him four years of math, and his great aunt taught him English in high school. Little did he know that he would later marry an 8th grade teacher who taught his son and her daughter. Education has always played an important role in Ralph’s life, especially t h r o u g h o u t h i s i m p r e s s i ve professional career.

In 1963, Ralph graduated from the University of Tennessee with a major in Zoology and a minor in Psychology. He then completed h i s m a s t e r ’s i n e d u c a t i o n administration with a minor in educational counseling at the University of Memphis. Following

his graduation, Ralph began his teach i ng ca reer at Memph i s University School For Boys where he taught Latin and biology. He taught at West Palm public schools until he moved to Cocoa, FL and became an Assistant Professor at Brevard Community College.

There, he taught human anatomy and physiology in the nursing program. Interested in furthering his own education, Ralph returned to the University of Tennessee and earned a Doctoral Degree in Educational Administration. Upon graduation, Ralph served four years as Dean of Student Services at Walters State Com mu n it y College in Morristown, Tennessee.

These are only a few of Ralph’s educational achievements.

I n 19 8 5, R a lph g r adu at e d from Wake Forest Universit y L aw S c h o ol wh i le t e a c h i n g educat ional law, educat ional leadersh ip, a nd spor t law at Appalachian State University. He also had a private law practice in Boone, North Carolina during that time. While in Boone, Ralph met his wife, Francie, who was completing her master’s degree in public school administration.

Ralph was her professor in the s c ho ol’s law a nd leader sh ip courses. They married in 1992 following her graduation.

Although, he admits he has slowed down in the past few years.

Another sig nificant part of R a lph’s l i fe i s volu nt e e r i ng with Meals on Wheels (MOW), a nonprofit organization that del ivers nut r it iou s mea l s to

people in need who are unable to provide food on their own.

R a lph b e g a n wo rk i n g w it h the organization in Boone and continues to work with them in Sarasota. He goes on a route every Thursday with his friend, Jim, and delivers food to lowincome households in the area.

The first woman on their route has left a lasting impression on Ralph. She is blind, but every time Ralph sees her, she is in great spirits and wants to thank him with a kiss!

Happiness is…Autumn Changes While it’s true that we don’t really get Fall here and the colors of the leaves don’t change, the colors of the license plates sure do. As the birds from the north take their winter in sunny Sarasota, we are visited by everything from the American Oystercatcher, terns, ibis, and Osprey, and of course, the snowbirds.

Ralph admits that the best part of his experience with MOW is that he feels like he is positively impacting others. As the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, R a lph h a s b e e n i n s p i r e d b y the other board members and volunteers that happily give their time to this effort. MOW Sarasota has over 1000 volunteers who cook meals and go on 39 routes six days a week. Several of these volunteers also live in The Landings!

T h roug hout h i s l i fe, R a lph has understood the importance of giving to others. A lifelong learner and passionate educator, Ralph gave his students the tools they needed to succeed. He also translated his passion for helping others to his work with Meals on Wheels, and is able to brighten the days of the people he meets on his routes. Ralph serves as a n i n spi rat ion to people who are looking to give back to their community this Thanksgiving season, and shows that you can do so in more ways than one.

LHA Meeting Notes The Landings Homeowners Association held its regularly scheduled board meet i ng on October 14, 2021, at 5:00 PM at the Landings Racquet Club.

The board approved the proposed budget for 2022 that set the Annual Assessment for all owners of the Association at $200.00. Invoices for the assessment will be sent in early November.

In other actions, the board approved house and trim colors for residences on Peregrine Point, Circle N and Kestral Park Lane. It approved the removal of trees on Flicker Field Circle, Kestral Park Lane, and Peregrine Point Circle N and a fence replacement on Pine Harrier Drive. It issued a rear setback variance for property on Pine Harrier Circle.

Real that are members of the Association that do not pay any assessments but are subject to the LHA deed restrictions. There are drainage issues on two lots that abut properties on Pine Harrier Circle and a deteriorating fence on The Landings owners’ property that needs repair/replacement.

Plenty for Pups – How to Help Your Dog Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner Safely

By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect Food and football are great, but the best part of the Thanksgiving holiday is gathering together with our family and friends. If you’re a pet parent, it’s even better as the furriest members of your family provide love and warmth to be extra thankful for.

Keep in mind though, while you, your family and your dog can savor the holiday together, your pup shouldn’t partake in the entirety of the family feast.

There are a number of traditional Thanksgiving foods that aren’t healthy for dogs, and it’s important to be mindful of which items to avoid. That said, several items on the traditional Thanksgiving table are great for dogs to sample.

Let’s take a look at each to help you, your family and your pup enjoy a happy and healthy holiday.

Unsafe and Unhealthy Thanksgiving Foods

U n s u r p r i s i n g l y, t h e Thanksgiving holiday coincides with an uptick in emergency vet visits, so it’s especially critical that you take extra care to not allow your dog to consume anything that may make them sick. Here are a few to look out for.

• Not every bone is a good bone – While dogs of almost every stripe famously love bones, poultry bones can damage a dogs digestive tract.

• Take it easy on the trimmings – Rich and delicious turkey skin,

or even yeasted dough can result in issues ranging from bloat to dangerous levels of toxicity.

Lastly, though this should go without saying, no…your dog should not be drinking beer, wine, cocktails or taking in any type of alcoholic beverage.

• Lay off the sweets – Sugar is generally not good for dogs, and anything containing Xylitol—like many baked goods—can be toxic.

• It ’s Turkey Day after all – In general, the big spread’s main course is OK for canines provided their portion hasn’t been prepared with seasoning, butter, or other fatty ingredients. Again, remember to avoid turkey bones and skin. White meat or dark?

That’s a matter of pup’s preference, of course.

• A sweet they can eat – Unlike most other Thanksgiving sweet stuff, sweet potatoes are a terrific option and a g reat source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and beta-carotene – just skip t he m a rsh m a l lows. Oh, a nd moderate helpings of boiled or baked potatoes can also be an excellent alternative provided they’re served without butter, sour cream, salt, or pepper.

• Favor fruits and veggies – In addition to potatoes, there are other traditional Thanksgiving

fruit and vegetable options that dogs are welcome to put on their plate—with a few watchouts. With ample amounts of plant fiber, manganese, and vitamins C and K, green beans (without butter or spices) are great for dogs; high in fiber and vitamins A and C, apples (without the core or seeds) also make a tempting treat; and as an aid to digestive, skin and coat health, canned pumpkin (without sugar or pie seasonings) is also a winner.

Of course, if you aren’t cooking a traditional Thanksgiving meal or just don’t want to feed your pup “people food,” there are plenty of perfectly safe com mercial alternatives. So many, in fact, that you can easily craft a sumptuous Turkey Day spread exclusively for your furry friends.

Savor y snack s li ke Remy’s Kitchen Just Turkey Hearts or Einstein’s Turkey Time treats made with real turkey can make for tasty appetizers. A Landings Endorsed Charity Program

Good works our Foundation has accomplished over the last seven years.

Our mission continues – to provide holiday gifts to children affected by cancer, abuse or loss of a loved one.

This grass roots effort to help children with cancer is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) charity that supports four organizations with the focus on helping disadvantaged children who might otherwise “fall through the cracks” … which is particularly unfortunate during the holidays!

Most of us hoped by now- masks gone, numbers of cases not a topic of discussion, travel back to part of our lives and celebrations heading into the holidays would be festive and bright! Many elements have returned to “near normal” for the majority of Landings residents and we are all grateful!

The organizations that we support continue to feel the impact of “not yet normal”- donations are down and the numbers of children they are serving are up! Our community has many new residents that don’t know about the Foundation and the children we support. We need your support more than ever and we need those that have participated in the past to spread the word about what you have done and how good it felt to give to those children.

This year we again have a drive-thru on Sunday, December 12th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We hope many Landings residents will line Landings Boulevard in holiday dress to greet these kids as they are driving to the LRC for their holiday gifts.

BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD & CELERY FIELDS: THE EAGLES ARE BACK

By Maralyn Kaufman-David, LMA Environmental Committee Chairperson Each of us has probably seen majestic eagles at some point in time in The Landings, but it’s always great to capture sightings and remember that The Landings has always been associated with the presence of eagles and several more of the 320 birds that have been sighted in Sarasota County (https://www.sarasotaaudubon. org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ SarasotaCounty.BirdChecklist2020. pdf).

Indeed, our street names are full of birds – Peregrine, Flicker, Heron, Kestral, Pine Harrier, and Starling! Shown here are a few pictures taken recently of eagles enjoying the area around Lake 3 in the Carriage Houses 1 community (photos shared by Terry Black)

CRANBERRIES FOR THANKSGIVING

The turkey is most definitely the star of the festive Thanksgiving table, but there is a special place for the delicious colorful cranberries as part of the numerous side dishes. It is easy to prepare with a minimum of time and effort. (This is a New York recipe.)

INGREDIENTS:

Dressing: 1 package of cranberries 1 or 2 mackintosh apples (depending on size} 1/2 cup of sugar 1 cup of water

DIRECTIONS:

Wash and peel, core, and cut apples into thick slices.

Bring the cup of water to a boil and turn to medium heat.

Add suga r a nd let it dissolve.

Add ap ple s, s i m m e r until soft (enough to mash roughly).

Boi l water add t he cranberries, bring them to a point that they start to pop.

Si m mer for ab out 10 minutes or until they reach the desired texture.

Stir, break up any large chunks of apples with the back of a spoon to reach a beautiful red applesauce consistency.

While cooking, stir occasionally and be sure you use a large enough pot since they love to expand and boil over.

Taste, and adjust by adding a squeeze of lemon zest, if desired, to enhance tartness.

May be served warm, but better allowed to meld flavors overnight or longer.
