FRED AND JAN PUHLFUERST Fred & Jan Puhlfuerst met in college at Montclair State University in 1956 and have been together ever since. While in college, Fred majored in Industrial Education. Jan graduated with degrees in English, Drama, and Speech Pathology. They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this July. They are the parents of two daughters and have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They were thrilled when both families visited them at Christmas. Prior to moving to Tara Woods in 2001, they spent their winter breaks looking at retirement places in Florida. When they got to Tara Woods, Jan said, “This is the place!” The family lived in Saudi Arabia in the mid-sixties, where Fred taught work skills to Saudi men. They returned to the United States during the Six Day War in 1967. Scary but exciting. Back in the United States, Jan and Fred and their two daughters traveled to many states during the summer. They were also counselors for young people through Operation

Friendship, an organization providing three-week international student exchanges with several European countries, including The Netherlands and England. In more recent years, Fred and Jan attended many trips through the Elderhostel Program, now known as Road Scholar. Through these educational programs, Jan and Fred visited nearly every state in the United States. Several years before moving to Florida, Fred was named New Jersey Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year. He also served as a town councilman in Fair Haven, NJ, where they resided for forty years before moving to Tara Woods. Both served as Elders in their home church. Jan is also a certified Lay Pastor and has preached and counseled church members in difficult situations. Both of the Puhlfuersts have been active in Tara Woods from the start. Jan has been involved with the Entertainers, Chorus, Red Hat Ladies, and was Editor in Chief of The Columns for several years. They belong to the New York/New Jersey Club, where Jan was “Queen of Trivia”. She

is an avid reader. In the past, Jan was a soloist at church and in the Chorus. Fred is deeply involved with many things in Tara Woods. He served as President of the Homeowners Association for more than three years, was Tennis Team Captain and is still an avid tennis player. He has organized and presided over the Pancake Breakfast for seventeen years. He is a talented handyman and even added two site-built rooms to

The Tara Woods Firemen and EMS collection was the best since Frank and I continued it for Chuck Poveromo. Over $1,000.00 was divided into six Publix gift cards,

so they could buy yummy stuff for their Christmas meals. We delivered one gift card to each station for three days on December 22nd, 23rd and 24th.

Fred was also a member of Chorus, involved in construction for the Entertainers and supervised the games and parade for Appreciation Weekend. Whatever it is, Fred is always ready to lend a helping hand. All in all, a fun and fulfilling life. Jan Puhlfuerst
