Calling All Del Tura Motor Cycler’s – New Activity Group DEL TURA MOTORCYCLING FRIENDS By Sheila Doublé We’d like to welcome all riders to our New Motorcycle Group: Del Tura Motorcycling Friends (check out our Facebook page). We’ve seen lots of motorcycles in Del Tura and would love to meet everyone. We ride to relax, enjoy and have fun. We have a magnificent group of people in Del Tura, so we’ll have fabulous stories and marvelous times. We had such a fantastic ride out to Labelle Sunday, Jan. 12th to the Log Cabin Restaurant for breakfast, great food, beautiful scenic route and fun meeting new (friends) fellow bikers. This was our first group event! We’d really

Hopefully all of you have received a ballot and have voted your choices for the three candidates that you want to serve on your Del Tura board. The new board members will be seated at the annual meeting on February
19 at 7pm. Please make plans to attend! Welcome home to all our winter residents. We are happy to see you! It’s time to enjoy all the various activities that Del Tura has to offer. Shows, dances, cards, golf, bowling, softball, pickleball, tennis etc……. there is always something to do. Don’t forget that during this busy time of the year, it is
important to keep safety in mind. Watch your speed on our roads, both in cars and golf carts; watch out for walkers, bikers, and dog walkers and keep in mind that golf carts can only be driven by licensed drivers. Don’t Play Politics with Your Portfolio You’re probably aware this is an election year. During the next several months, the candidates will discuss issues that should greatly interest you as a citizen. But as an investor, how concerned should you be with the results of the presidential and congressional elections? Maybe not as much as you might think. At different times, the financial markets have performed well and poorly under different administrations and when different parties have controlled Congress. And after all the votes are counted, outcomes in the investment markets can be unpredictable. Consequently, you’ll be helping yourself greatly by not making big moves in your portfolio in anticipation of new legislation or political moves down the line. Of course, that’s not to say that nothing emerging from Washington could ever have an impact on your investment decisions. For example, if a future president and Congress decide to change the capital gains tax rate, it could affect some of your choices, such as which stocks and stockbased mutual funds you should buy, and how long you should hold them. Overall, though, your investment results will ultimately depend on actions you can take, including these:
Making changes for the right reasons – While the results of an election may not be a good reason to make changes in your invest • ment portfolio, other factors can certainly lead you to take steps in this direction. For one thing, as you get closer to retirement, you
may want to shift some – though certainly not all – of your investment dollars from more growth-oriented vehicles to more conservative ones. Conversely, if you decide, well in advance, that you might want to retire earlier than you originally thought, you may need to invest more aggressively, being aware of the increased risk involved.
Following a long-term strategy – In pretty much all walks of life, there are no shortcuts to success – and the same is true with invest• ing. You need to follow a long-term strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, and you need the patience and perseverance to keep investing in all markets – up, down and sideways.
Avoiding mistakes – Many people think of an investment mistake as failing to “get in on the ground floor” of some company that • ultimately grew to huge proportions. But it’s pretty hard to become an early investor in companies like these, many of which start
out as privately held businesses without any stockholders. Furthermore, companies with shorter track records can be much more unpredictable investments. However, you do want to avoid some real mistakes, such as chasing “hot” stocks. By the time you hear about them, they may already be cooling off, and they might not even be appropriate for your needs. Another mistake: failing to diversify your portfolio. If you only own one type of asset, such as growth stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn.
Spreading your dollars over a wide range of investments can help lower your risk exposure. (However, diversification by itself can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses.) Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Liz Poniatowski Life is too short to live someone else’s dreams. It’s true...life IS too short to live someone else’s dreams. Not everyone wants the same things and not everyone has to do the same thing. In the Good Timers’ Singles Club, you get to choose which dreams you want to pursue. You enjoy going to plays? Come with us. We’ve picked out some good ones to go to this year. You enjoy a boat ride to a nearby island to enjoy some shopping, dining, beach time? Come join us...it’s on our agenda for this year. You enjoy going out to lunch once a month to ‘catch up’ with each
other and celebrate birthday’s? Again...come join us. That’s what we do. We get out there and socialize with each other. Some of us are not able to drive so that’s why we carpool! As the song says “Hakuna Matata...it means No Worries”. We take care of one another. We make sure if there’s someplace we’re going to and you want to join in on the fun we get you there. Lasting friendships have been formed in this club. This month we have 2 tables of friends that will gather to have fun at the Mardi Gras fundraiser on Saturday 8 February. We also have a group of us that will be going to see Kinky Boots at the Broadway
Palm Dinner Theater later in the month. This is only the beginning of the fun that is to come so if you’re single and want to jump on this bandwagon please join us at our next meeting on 4 February to see what we’re all about. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in the Poinciana Room. Socializing begins at 4:00 and the meeting starts at 4:30. All single Del Turian’s are encouraged to join us at one of our monthly meetings to see if this is a club that you’d like to be a part of. By Rosemary Eiden The Del Tura Garden Club has given many creative ideas and support for the garden. Measurements for the garden were taken by Fred Taylor and Rosemary Eiden. Rosemary will be generating a design on graph paper. The garden will be on the corner of Gran Via and Avenida Escorial. At the site now are remnants of sidewalks that were used when the original, portable Home Town America office was down at the end of Avenida Escorial in
2003. Hurricane Charley blew it down in 2004. Presently, the garden will be approximately 70 x 70 feet and will be roped off. Some of the ideas to incorporate into the design include: a gazebo, benches, an information kiosk, a propagation area, and possibly a screened butterfly house. The design will have garden rooms with a path leading throughout. A detailed business/garden plan will be worked up and
presented along with the design hopefully by mid-February. A native plant design workshop has been talked about. Participants would bring their garden measurements to the workshop. Graph paper, and tools would be supplied and each student would be instructed on how to design their own garden using native plants. Look for the garden logo and stayed tuned in to the garden column for future information and endeavors.

SNOW DOGS
You’ve heard of Snow Birds, but how about Snow Dogs? Come by the dog park any day between 4:00 and 5:30 to see the Snow Dogs. They are back having a great time playing with all the year round dogs while all the snowbirds are having just as much fun reuniting with the year-rounders. The parking lot is full! Speaking of parking--it is at a premium. Please park perpendicular to the fence or parallel park along the maintenance yard fence so people and dogs can all have easy access to the gate. If you haven’t been to the park with your dog, come and see the fun they have. There is a large dog park and small dog park. Everyone is welcome. If you don’t have a dog and are thinking of getting one, you might want to think about adoption. The shelters have a great variety of breeds and mixed breeds just waiting to be rescued by caring owners. Many breeds have their own rescues also.
HELPING HANDS CITES MANY REASONS TO ADOPT:
1. You save a life. All animals at our shelter are in need of a second chance. They have been lost, given up or abandoned. They are all unwanted and helpless. You are giving them a new life in a loving home. 2. You help break the cycle of pet overpopulation. There are not enough homes for all the animals that are born every year. Adopting from a shelter helps weaken the pet overpopulation cycle. Each year 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them.
3. You help stop cruelty in mass breeding facilities. Throughout the country, thousands of commercial pet-breeding facilities and backyard breeders produce millions of animals for sale in pet stores and through newspaper ads. Often known as puppy and kitten mills, these facilities repeatedly impregnate female dogs that spend their entire lives in cages without human companionship. These unfortunate animals are often in intolerable environments, forced to produce litter upon litter, and are destroyed after they become unprofitable assets. Adopting a shelter animal means you don’t support such cruel practices. 4. You take advantage of adopting an adult animal. Adult pets are great! Often, they are already housetrained and some can even “sit” or “stay.” You won’t have to deal with the “puppy phase” or the “kitten phase” which means less of that youthful energy such as biting, chewing, clawing, etc. You will be able to see the personality of the adult animal and won’t have to wait to see what you get. 5. You get a lifetime resource with shelter employees and volunteers. People who work at the shelter will be a great resource to help you find information or resources for your pet. Our staff members work with animals every day and have a wealth of information on many different issues. 6. You choose from a great selection of animals. Our shelter offers a variety that you won’t find anywhere else. We have specific breeds and also the greatest mutts you’ll ever find. We have more than 6,000 animals come through our doors every year!

All animals that come to the shelter are admitted by experienced staff. They are given vaccinations upon arrival and go through a behavior screening process. (Please ask your Adoption Counselor for details). We have several vet partners that come to our shelter weekly and are there to assist us with health care issues and concerns. 8. You support a valuable charity and community institution. Sadly, every community in America requires an animal shelter. When you adopt a pet from our shelter, you assist a not-for-profit organization, but also send a message to others who will be asking you for years to come where you obtained your adorable pet. Shelters improve the community by mandating that adopted animals be spayed or neutered. This requirement diminishes chances that more unwanted animals will enter the world. 9. You pay less. Low adoption fees (which cover a portion of our shelter’s costs) are much less than the cost of purebred puppies or kittens sold for profit. 10. You encourage others to adopt animals from shelters. When your friends ask where you got your amazing pet, you can tell them “at the shelter.” Your adoption may encourage others to do the same.

It has been said that the power of love can move mountains and at the same time destroy hearts. Such a powerful word! Emotionally it can take us to the moon and back or break our hearts and spirits. In our lifetime we have seen the power of love triumph over evil and pain, as well as give individuals the strength to do and endure impossible things. At each stage of our lives we will continue to experience “love” in various forms. For most of us, our first experience with love is what we sense as infants. Every one of us is born with an enormous capacity to receive love. The nurturing in those vulnerable stages of our lives will eventually mold us into
who we are today. Will we trust? Will we be cautious, or protective? Will we wear our hearts on our sleeves? Our life experiences with this powerful emotion will determine the actions and decisions we make throughout each stage of our lives. Love reaches far beyond symbols. A single rose may symbolize love but without sincerity, it is just a rose. To a small child a dandelion given from the heart represents a true sincerity, a love without reservation. (I still have those dandelions pressed in the pages of my old books. I bet you do too!) That kind of love melts cold hearts, opens closed doors and minds, and has been known to create miracles. You can’t beat that kind of love! Remember those handmade hearts, and holiday cards, complete with original poems, your child made with love? I can still visualize the excitement on their little faces as they came rushing through the door holding on to that special surprise made just for you. Our refrigerator was always
covered with their artworks of love! Over the years we have received many gifts from our children and grandchildren, but the ones we will always keep close to our hearts, are the ones they made as young children. Throughout our lives, love will teach us many lessons. It will break our hearts as well as give us hope and promise. Broken hearts can be mended by the power of love. A smile, hug, a kind word, or gesture can relay a glimmer of hope, or create a spark that can ignite a flame and rekindle the fire within a person’s soul. Love will get us through the most difficult times and celebrate the happiest of times of our lives. Love is powerful, healing, and believing. Let us continue to share our gifts of love with each other every day. Together we can create a kinder, loving world!

Whiskers are a beautiful facial feature that enhance your kitty’s good looks, but they are so much more. They are the radar/early warning system that guides every step a cat takes. As a result, cats are capable of amazing feats such as walking on ledges, gauging and jumping distances and squeezing thru narrow spaces. These long, stiff hairs project outward on either side of the nose and on the cheek area. There are
shorter whiskers under the chin, above the eyes and also on the back of their front paws. All whiskers are designed to send tactile signals to the brain and nervous system. They also respond to vibrations in the air. The kitty radar system allows them to detect even the smallest changes in their immediate surroundings, to make quick, safe decisions regarding their next movement, fit in a narrow space and walk on a pencil-thin ledge, even in the dark. When the cat’s whiskers point forward, it is a sign of going into hunting mode, even if the prey is a
favorite toy! Some people believe that if a cat loses a whisker, you will have good luck by picking it up and keeping it. Hmmm? Whiskers do grow back, too. Whiskers work to keep a cat safe and should never be cut or pulled on. So, cats prefer if you look but don’t touch. No animal has an innate radar system quite like a fabulous feline! Meow! Fish Fruit Tree Project By Rick Rudzik and Sherry Plisch October 2019 – December 2019 – FISH Fruit Tree Project We picked 759 pounds of avocados, star fruit and lemons during the months of October through December 2019. Those residents donating their fruit
were: Shirley McGilvray, Millie Hanrahan, Frank Spinale, Art Keen, Hank & Margaret Zanger, Milt & Loretta Chamblin, Sandy Mulvaney and Vivian Gray. We had six volunteers who put in a total of 31 hours. They were: Rick Rudzik, Barry Plisch, Sherry
Plisch, Joe Pollock, Maria Soper and Diana Camp. All of the fruit was taken to the CCMI Café/soup kitchen and gratefully received. A GREAT BIG “THANK YOU” to the donors and the volunteers.

We can depend on our hard-working refreshment committee to add to this ‘LOVE-ly’ event. The 2019 Flocking for the Cure was a fundraising success, so beginning in February there will be three “flocks”. If a flock of Flamingos appear in your yard, it will cost you a $10 donation to remove them, then you send them on their way to someone else. You can guarantee in advance that you won’t be ‘flocked’ by donating $20. Cash only (no checks) for special envelope at the Pro Shop. A list of members, initialed noting who has been ‘flocked’, will be posted in the Dungeon. All monies raised are donated to Partners for Breast Cancer Cure, a Ft. Myers organization with funds remaining in this area. A reminder from Jan Hoffay regarding turning league scorecards in to the ProShop: if a member has a Birdie, a Chip-in, or a Hole in One! please circle the hole number adding an * with an asterisk by the person’s name at the bottom of the card. Jan reviews the scorecards weekly, and awards are presented at the December General Meeting.

Traveling Shuffleboard League By Glenn Tointon SEASON OPENER Our traveling shuffleboard team started the season with a 16-14 win over Six Lakes. Everyone played
well but Glenn Tointon and Janet Reinen both went 3-0 while Marlene Eck went 2-0. MaryKay Tointon and Marcella Carothers both went 2-1. Others on this year’s team are: Diana Camp, Judy
Lessard, Dennis Major, Carolyn Brueggerman, Kathy Boesel, Cam Smith, and Kurt King. Next week we are at Heron’s Glen with hopes to keep our winning streak in tact.

SPORTS & EXERCISE 18 Hole Women’s Golf Association TEE OFF TIME By Margie Blackwell CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Our new club champion is Kathy Montemaggi. Bravo, Kathy, you played like a champion! Flight A winners in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places are Paula Lafreniere, Bobbie Asper and Jean Reimer. Mary Ciezadlo took 1st in Flight B, with Margie Blackwell and Sherry Leverre coming in 2nd and 3rd. Flight C winners are Barbara Luke, 1st, Pat Bedard, 2nd, and Marty Riley, 3rd. Flight D winners are Bertie Dugo in 1st and Jean Wiley in 2nd. There was cooler weather and a bit of rain on
the last day of the tournament, but we were able to finish. And with a couple of scores tied after 18 holes, there were two playoffs on #1 West. A big thank you to the pro shop for their help, a round of applause for all the ladies who participated and congratulations to Kathy, Mary, Barb and Bertie! Job well done! There are a few pictures from the tournament posted in the dungeon. HOLE IN ONE Denise Rose got her first hole in one. It was on #3 West and she didn’t even see the ball drop in… she was picking up her tee! Congrats, Denise!
Rules Bobbie Asper has been providing the league with great information about the new rules; in particular, the new world handicap scoring that became effective January 1st. Also, with the mama and baby alligators on #5 South, Bobbie has clarified what to do if your ball should go into the hazard in and around them. If anyone is still unclear about these or other rules, Bobbie is always willing to provide an explanation. SoftBall News at Del Tura By Pam Price The 2020 softball season is underway, and Del Tura is fielding two teams. The “Amigos”, who are the defending champions of the league are looking to defend their title and bring it back to Del Tura for the third year in a row. The second team, the “Diablos” are giving the Amigos some friendly competition! The addition of the Del Tura “Diablos” provides the opportunity for many more people to play week to week. Based on results, it is likely the Amigos will be in the A division of the league and the Diablos will be in the B division. That means both teams can bring home the 1st place trophy for their respective divisions! The very first game of the season found the newly formed Del Tura Diablos hosting the defending champion Del Tura Amigos! Some of us feared (me, for example) that the Amigos would shut out the Diablos, however that didn’t happen at all. In fact, the Diablos had one inning where they maxed out with the five run/inning score rule! That wasn’t quite enough to overcome the Amigos, but I did happen to
notice a few nervous Amigos for the remainder of the game. As a fan, the best part of the game was when Dick Rose (Amigos) pitched to his wife Denise Rose (Diablos). I am pretty sure my psychic skills told me that Dick worried about what to do, (I can’t let her get a hit, but it won’t go good at home if I strike her out…maybe I need to walk her). Denise had other plans, as Dick delivered his pitch and Denise met that pitch with a solid base hit! Denise also made the third out of the 6th inning by catching a high and long drive deep into center field. WAY TO GO Denise! The game ended abruptly in the 7th inning, when the lights went out and the teams were left in the dark. The Amigos had won, the Diablos had given them more competition than they expected AND fans had a great time, cheering for both teams. Speaking of the fans: if you haven’t been to a game, please consider showing up at Carmellita field to support the teams. The Amigos have a good following, and we need to build up a solid following for the Diablos. The players have shared they love the cheering that the fans provide, and
the more fans, the more motivated them become. Maps are available on the softball bulletin board, and it’s an easy 20-minute drive to Punta Gorda’s Carmelita field. All games are scheduled to start at 5:30, but they frequently will start a few minutes early, so I recommend being there by 5:15. On February 29th, the teams will hold a “Meet the Team/Fan Appreciation/Fund Raiser” event in the Starlight Ballroom. Players will be selling tickets for $7.50, and food will be prepared by the team players. This event is always a good time, and the players will grill you a hot dog, hamburger or both! There will be a short program, with a few awards presented, our annual rendition of “Who’s on First”, and other entertainment. Tickets will be available from all players beginning February 1st. Games are scheduled every Monday and Wednesday in the month of February. The Diablos have white shirts, with black shorts/pants. The Amigos have Red shirts and shorts/pants. They play at the same time. The Diablos also currently have openings for cheerleaders and fans. No interviews required, just show up!

Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop Our Del Tura Creative Writers Workshop is doing great! We currently have 10 contributing members, and an additional new member currently working on the first assignment. We have answered seven challenges and are currently working on our eighth. The following are submittals for The third challenge (See “Unexpected Journey,”), which is to observe an outdoor area, but do not give life to inanimate objects. Rather, describe what you see in detail, using your senses of sight, smell, sound, and taste, if applicable, then draw your reaction to your observations. The fourth challenge (See “My Friend”) is to make an observation of a small inanimate object. Bring it to life but keep the identity to yourself and use several descriptive words/phrases to paint a picture, but do not reveal its identity until the end.
By Nancy Davy Hope you enjoy! Our meeting dates for February are 2/6 and 2/27, from 2:00pm - 3:30 pm in the Card Room Unexpected Journey By Sandy Gove It’s a perfect October morning in New Hampshire. The air is fresh with a bit of a nip, and the sun is rising quickly. The path I follow has much of its soil worn away by those who’ve sought my goal before, perhaps native Abenaki who came with their homemade weirs to fish for bass or trout, or early settlers, or lovers seeking privacy. The tall pines are now behind me, small scrub trees brush my jeans, and the low-growing blueberry bushes indicate I’m nearly there. Just around a grouping of prominent rocks, deposited by the Ice Age, is the view. Mountain ranges set afire with brilliant red, orange and yellow maple leaves contrast with tall green pines in the distance, creating a backdrop for this northern cove on the lake. Too shallow for most powerboats, the water here is still, blue-grey, with glistening areas exposed as the sun “burns off” the fog, indicating the water is still warmer than the air. Soon, the sun will render the entire expansive gleaming surface to mirror the striking foliage behind it. The only interruption to the solitude here is the distant hammering of a diligent red- headed woodpecker. Dotting the shimmering water are small moss-covered islands, which will act as steppingstones for white-tailed deer come snow. A short canoe paddle away is the large flat “picnic rock,” where many impromptu lunches were enjoyed, shared with a chipmunk or two. Continuing along the shore, lake water washes over
nearby rocks and my Muck boots, as a perfect bright red maple leaf leisurely floats by. Suddenly a somewhat mournful call is heard in the distance, followed by a similar response nearby: two loons are calling to each other, as small wildlife busy themselves in the fallen leaves, making the most of this precious fall day. Looking down at the minnows and an occasional sunfish swimming in the clean clear water, insects and an iridescent “darning needle” hover above; but my attention is swiftly drawn upward by a familiar honking sound as a V formation of 20 or more Canadian geese maneuvers its way south. Focusing again on the lake, an emerging turtle is staking out its rock for sunbathing, and there is the telling croak of a bullfrog from a distant carpet of lily pads. I then notice the elegant bird with its greying black and white checkered back, spear-like beak and fire-red eyes gliding across the cove: the nearby loon comes into view and makes another wellknown cry to its mate before diving once again underwater. I continue on until I arrive at an old dock by a 1950’s era cabin long abandoned. Once the setting of laughter and summer adventures, it now awaits a new owner who will likely, sadly, replace it with a mega mansion. I sit cross- legged on the old dock looking at the beauty that surrounds me, pondering this day and promising myself to return often to this unspoiled area and its beautiful lake known as Pleasant Waters. The sun is now high, and the warmth encourages me to remove my pullover. Other than the humming of insects it is now still. Then I hear a faint ringing sound, and I wake up.
My Friend By Jan Walimire I’m comfortable with you in my hands, my friend. One end fits perfectly like we were made for each other, and the other end changes as needed as we traverse the hills and flat places on our seemingly endless adventure. You seem to be an extension of my arms as we move in unison from right to left in one smooth motion. Our purpose, of course, is to reach our destination with as little effort as possible. You do your best with what you have been given. Some days we both seem very pleased with our results. Your distal end finds its mark without fail, resulting in that satisfying, distinctive smack that echoes throughout the course. But, alas, there are those days when we do not see eye to eye! You seem to have a mind of your own and pay no attention to my repeated whispered mutterings. Our journey is filled with perils… sinking sand, tall grass, tree roots, rocks and even water! What are we to do? Well, this much I know – I can’t do it without you. We go home, where I clean you up and place you in your resting place for the night. Let’s try this again in the morning, my friend, my faithful trusted golf club.

Thursday Night HOA Sponsored Bingo By Jack Blevons I’m sure many of you are happy that Thursday night bingo is back again in full swing, after knowing there was no bingo on December 27th or January 2nd, because of the holidays. That was for two reasons which were we knew a lot of people traveled over the holidays & we also felt that we were sure that all the volunteers that help us run bingo, needed some time off as well to
enjoy the holidays. We are hoping now that with the 3-month renters that usually come into our community & people back from traveling over the holidays, that our attendance will pick up which always makes for more money to be won playing. For those of you that are new, we are keeping our games simple & easy to play which means it’s more fun playing. A reminder again, doors open at 6:00 to buy your game sheets &
closes promptly at 6:45 so money can be tabulated before we start & then we start playing at 7:00. We are usually done between 9:00 & 9:30 so it’s just about 2-hours out of your Thursday night. Doesn’t cost much to play either & the bigger the crowds, the bigger the pay-outs become so come on down Thursday night & have some fun & hopefully go home with more money than you came with.

Everyone had fun searching for red shoes, condoms and stealing flags. The food was delicious with every chef sharing their famous dishes. The event will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 3:00 PM. Tickets go on sale February 18 at coffee hour. The golf cart scavenger hunt strts in the parking lot and potluck is in Starlight room at 5:30 PM. Ther will be prizes for the winning team. Annual Christmas Carols Spreading the Joy at Del Tura
By Priscilla Peterson Sometimes things have unplanned results. Every year I get the Christmas Spirit and have been part of a group that sings Christmas Carols at the homes of residents that have difficulty getting out. Our past host, Gail Reeves was unable to arrange it this year. With the help of several of our community members,
I was able to identify 10 residents to visit. On December 18th, in the evening, 15 hardy souls set forth, even though the temperature was 51 degrees and the wind made it feel like the frozen North. We bundled up and went home to home singing carols. Several of these folks joined us in song. Many faced a lonely and joyless holiday. Their faces lit up
when we sang, and tears filled their eyes. I won’t say we were great singers, but our hearts were touched by this experience and we all felt the spirit of the season. I (we) agree that the unplanned result was the joy we experienced. This is just one more reason I am proud to live in Del Tura. We care about our neighbors! I hope your will join us next Christmas.
