The Legend of Sara DeSoto...

Sara, daughter of Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto, is credited with being the inspiration for the name Sarasota. DeSoto explored this part of Florida in 1539, and according to legend, his daughter traveled with him. A tale picked up from the Seminole Indian legends and spun by George Fleming Chapline in 1906 in his book, “A Bunch of Grass: Some Verses and Some Otherâ€?, relates a story URPDQWLFDOO\ Ă€OOHG ZLWK WUHHV and forest, bays and early days. According to Chapline, a strong Indian brave name Chichi-Okobee offered himself to DeSoto’s guardsmen with the words, “Peace, I surrender to the warrior of the great white chiefâ€?. To secure their safe passage, DeSoto held ChichiOkobee hostage, then soon realized his prisoner willingly endured the throngs of captivity in order to be near his daughter, Sara. Due to the unfamiliar living conditions Okobee fell gravely ill and the physicians of the Spanish camp were unable to cure him. In his dying hour, Sara begged to be permitted to minister Chichi. Love’s potion, more powerful than the medicament of

medicine men, brought back the steady gaze to his eye, his health and strength. But when Sara fell ill, all the tender care given by the physicians were in vain. It was Chichi’s turn to beg DeSoto to allow him to return to his father’s camp and bring back the great medicine man, Ahti. Ahti kept long vigils by Sara’s side but was unable to revive her. Ahti’s powers had been matched with one greater than his; the Great Spirit had called her home. The distraught Chichi-Okobee requested that he might select the place of her burial and take part in the ceremony. One hundred Seminole braves led by Chichi-Okobee performed the burial of Sara. A silent canoe trip to “the most beautiful and most peaceful body of water that the Spaniards had ever beheldâ€? ended when Sara, ZLWKWKHZKLWHED\Ă RZHUVLQKHU blue-black hair, and the feather from the wing of the black heron in her hand, was tenderly lowered into the deep waters. At a signal from the young chief, every warrior sprang to their feet, tomahawk in hand and began a war chant. Once the echos died, they used their tomahawks to destroy their canoes sending them all to the bottom of the waters. Chichi-Okobee along with his hundred warriors had gone to guard the resting place of their young chieftain’s love. It is said that the sullen roar of the Gulf of Mexico, as it breaks upon the beaches, is but the QRLVHRIFRQĂ LFW7KDWWKHJUHDW whitecaps which chase each

A trip to the Everglades to speak to the Seminoles resulted in his learning the name of Ahti and the name Chichi-Okobee. between Cuba and Florida, it is not unlikely that the Governor was visited by one of his admirers, whom being quite youthful, might easily have been mistaken for his daughters by the Indians. It is also known that a number of women died while accompanying the expedition and to avoid the desecration or mutilation of bodies by revengeful Indians, they were consigned to the deepest waters in many instances. Who the lovely Sara was and where she came from is still a mystery. That she lived and was buried in Sarasota Bay is generally accepted as legendary fact.

|The Pelicans of Siesta Key A wonderful bird is the Pelican His bill will hold more than his belican. He can take in his beak Food enough for a week But I’m darned if I see how the helican... This humorous verse by Dixon L. Merritt contains one accurate statement “A wonderful bird is the Pelicanâ€?. Its bill will not hold more than its belly, and it cannot take enough food in its beak for a week. However, the beak or bill is remarkable. The Pelican uses this unusual physical feature together with his pouch as a hand to feed itself, as a tool to hammer, shear, and crack. And probably the most HIIHFWLYHĂ€VKLQJQHWLQWKHZRUOG0DQ\SHRSOHEHOLHYHWKH 3HOLFDQFDWFKHVDQGVWRUHVĂ€VKLQLWVSRXFKWKHQĂ LHVEDFN to its home to eat. This is not true. The pouch is also used to feed its young, with the SDUHQWRSHQLQJLWVELOODQGRIIHULQJKDOIGLJHVWHGÀVKLQWKH pouch for the baby birds to reach in and feed themselves. The Pelican is among the most ancient of earth’s living creatures. Some scientists date the Pelican to the Paleocene and Eocene periods some 60 to 70 million years ago. Science disagrees about the number of Pelicans species in the world, some claiming 10, others 12. But they do agree there are two distinct types in America. Our local character here in Sarasota is Pelecanus Occidentalis, the Brown Pelican. To most of us he looks like a bird mother nature put together out of amusement. Especially when he is waddling across the beach or dock. A very graceful bird when airborne, you’ll see

Most area marinas have resident mascots that waddle up the docks and sit within a few feet with pleading eyes waiting to be fed. Because our local Brown Pelican is not a migrating bird, he lives here generation after generation. To say it’s a ‘hidden gem’ is a gross understatement; as one of Sarasota Counties premier quality, full service hotels, combined with one of Sarasota’s highest rated restaurants, Morgan’s, this is a place not to be missed. But the most amazing element of Bentleys is the Oasis that lies within! Centered in the complex, the outdoor ‘Osprey Beach’ pool area with its vast decks with man-made beaches, cabanas, gazebo’s, an awesome 80’ Tiki bar and casual dining Grille, this has got to be one of the most unbelievable discoveries you will make. You would think this would be enough, but not for the owners of this place; they also have a smart and trendy Seattle’s Best coffee shop with free WiFi access and a very classy nightclub called The Underground. It goes on… Bentleys has one of the biggest function rooms in the County being able to seat over 300 people for your dream wedding reception, party, corporate function, seminar or whatever you can come up with! They also have regular live bands inside and out. For Siesta Key residents and visitors, Bentleys has come up with a superb system of shuttling people to their location for us to enjoy their wonderful delights! They have teamed up with a local ‘Free Beaches Rides’ buggy company to transport guests from anywhere on the island to their shuttle bus pick up point at the South of the Key. This is a ‘priority’ service allowing people who want to go to Bentleys, to jump the ‘line’ for speedy transfer to their hotel.

From there it’s a quick and simple (about 15 minutes) free shuttle bus ride to Bentleys. This service runs from 10am until midnight allowing guests to enjoy a full day by the pool, and if they want, use the complementary showers and changing rooms to get dressed for a night in Morgan’s before moving on to the ‘Underground’ nightclub; then to be whisked back to Siesta Key without the worry of getting a ticket, genius! Tortuga Gorda Cocktail |It’s a Family Affair at SKOB... By julsw | Courtesy of Caribbean Travel + Life

This fruity, tropical island drink packs quite a punch with 4 types of liquor. SERVES 1 1 oz. Cruzan 151 rum 1 oz. pineapple rum 1 oz. blue Curaçao 1 oz. melon liqueur 1 oz. each of pineapple juice and orange juice 1 oz. Sprite 1. Mix in a big glass with ice. Stir, then garnish with an orange and a cherry.

What could be better than having oysters at an authentic Florida Oyster Bar? How about oysters and live entertainment seven nights a week. The Siesta Key Oyster Bar is better known as SKOB (much as we refer to this publication as SKIV). Located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, it is a family owned and operated business. Jack, the father, retired from Chicago to Sarasota. His daughters Jill and Beth, along with their families, were soon to follow. Once Jill found out the Siesta Key Oyster Bar was for sale, it didn’t take much to convince her sister and brotherin-law to join her quest to possess the true family beach bar. The SKOB was purchased by “The Family” in November of 2003. The family has grown beyond Jill, Geno, Beth and Keith; they consider staff and regular customers as part of the family. Keeping true to their name, the SKOB’s specialty is oysters on the half shell. They even have a Crustacean Happy Hour that happens

every day from 3 – 6 daily featuring oysters RQWKHKDOIVKHOODQG/RXLVLDQDFUDZÀVK7KH menu has a large assortment of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood entrees and a very neat kid’s menu. You can enjoy your meal on a large deck overlooking Ocean Blvd or inside with the air-conditioning. The SKOB offers full bar service and has a late night Happy Hour featuring 2 for 1 drink specials starting at 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. SKOB features live music each and every day! The groups play island favorites like “Margaritaville,” but they also have wide repertoires of popular tunes from today and yesterday. Who knows, you may even catch some great Delta Blues.

The music starts 7pm Monday thru Thursday, 8pm Friday & 1pm Saturday & Sunday. 5238 Ocean Blvd. On the Siesta Key Village Map location B #45. 941-346-5443 www.skob.com.

|What’s In A Name? by Emy Stein... Ever wonder how some streets got named? Take “Midnight Pass Roadâ€? for instance. This road runs almost the entire length of Siesta Key and begs the question: What the heck happened at midnight on this sleepy little island back when it was named? Curious, I did a bit of research and came across an article informing me that a pass was created on the southern tip of Siesta Key back in 1921 by a hurricane. Digging a little further, I found that the pass was originally named Musketeer Pass and was renamed Midnight Pass in 1924. Interestingly, that was around the time of prohibition so I continued to read a few more articles until I came across one Roberts Hotel about Captain Louis Roberts. It detailed how he was a Key West native and traveled Florida’s west coast in D VPDOO Ă€VKLQJ ERDW +H GHFLGHG WR VHWWOH RQ Siesta Key after falling in love and marrying 2FHDQ+DQVRQGDXJKWHURI3HWHU+DQVRQRI Little Sarasota Bay. They wasted no time in starting a family. And, as their family grew in size, so did the house. Roberts continued to add to the house and in the early 1900’s the Roberts FODQ VWDUWHG WDNLQJ LQ ZLQWHU YLVLWRUV +LV hospitality combined with his wife’s culinary VNLOOVSURYHGSURĂ€WDEOHVRKHGHFLGHGWRH[SDQG their home again to take on even more winter

YLVLWRUV,QKHQDPHGLWWKH5REHUWV+RWHO It was later renamed Siesta Inn and has since been replaced with a private home. When prohibition hit with the enactment of the Volstead Act in 1919, rum-runners navigated throughout the area. Cargoes of illegal liquor would be run in from the Gulf. 7KH IDVWHVW ERDWV ZHUH GLVJXLVHG DV Ă€VKLQJ boats and could maneuver up the shallow canals where the larger boats of the federal agents couldn’t pursue them. There were reports of a bootleggers’ shack springing up in the mangroves on Roberts Point and a speakeasy appearing on a cove at the north end of +DQVHQ%D\RX$FFRUGLQJWR Captain Roberts’ brother-inODZ+HQU\´/RXLVORYHGKLV booze.â€? And interestingly, even more guests came to Roberts’ establishment during this time. So even though many will claim that the street is so named because the hurricane back in 1921 came through at midnight creating the original pass, in the back of my mind I will always wonder if bootlegging may have played a role in it? Whatever the reason, I’m sure Captain Roberts would be proud in knowing he was one of the many great pioneers that brought life, and perhaps a bit of mystery, to Siesta Key.

,Q6HDUFKRI3DUDGLVH I’ve always thought that there was something special about living on a tropical island. I imagined going to work in shorts and a casual shirt everyday and thought it would be like a nonstop vacation. What we found was that the simplistic wonder of waking up to balmy breezes everyday and having the warmth of the sun kissing your back as you walk or bike to work is something that must be experienced. Coming from Wisconsin (I admit I’m a cheese-head) I don’t think we will ever take these near perfect conditions for granted. And yes, wearing

shorts and a casual shirt everyday really is just like a nonstop vacation for me. Are there any bad days in paradise? I’m sure there are, but for us we’ve stopped searching for that perfect place because we’ve found ours right here on Siesta Key. It’s so close to the $UWVDQGÀQHGLQLQJ$QGWKHUHDUHSOHQW\RI places to shop both on and around the island. The casual and friendly attitudes of the islanders make us feel like we’ve just come home.
