Last spring, the Landings Lakes, Environmental and the Carriagehouse 1 Association applied for a grant from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Project to make environmental improvements to Carriagehouse Lake (Lake 3). The long term intention is to use lake 3 as a test case to introduce non-chemical means to control algae in the lake using biodiversity in place of chemicals that end up in the bay. We are also trying to reduce erosion of the banks around the lakes. Because our stormwater drainage system flows directly into Roberts Bay and eventually into Sarasota Bay, we believe the benefits of our project will be the reduction of chemicals and sediments entering into Sarasota Bay. In addition, as we have noticed in our other lakes where we have established plants in the water and along the shorelines, we expect will result in a return of wildlife (shore birds not seen in years, otters and raptors) to the Project lake. The scientific basis for our project is a well-established correlation between the harmful effects of chemical buildup

in retention ponds due to long-term spraying to eradicate algae and chemicals in lawn fertilizers that are leached into the ponds. Eliminating these point sources of harmful chemicals will enable a return to a balanced ecosystem of native water plants, fish and other wildlife that will manage algae and water quality naturally. We were awarded a grant to plant water plants in the water and along the shoreline. On Saturday August 10th, 11
volunteers from The Landings weathered rain, heat and high humidity at the lake to plant over 2,000 water plants around the parameter of the lake. Five different varieties of plants were installed. If this project is successful, we will begin to implement these programs in the eight other lakes in The Landings. We want to thank all the volunteers who made this project possible. New provision added for speeders
Emails
By Michael Knupp and Neil Goldman, LMA Safety Committee
In mid-August, the LMA had its first need to use the new bulk e-mail system that was implemented as part of The Landings website. If you did not get this notice, you are not on the LMA resident list. If you want to be on the list, send an e-mail to insidethelandings@ gmail.com. asking us to put you on. The facility, as required by current standards for such systems, adds a link at the bottom of the e-mail to “unsubscribe” to further e-mails. BUT NOTE, if you unsubscribe from this list you will NOT receive any LMA-business related e-mails, including notifications during emergency situations, including hurricanes. For your safety, please be sure at least one member of your household is on the list.
A new provision recommended by the Safety and Security Committee to be added to the current LMA speed policy will be considered at the next LMA Board meeting at the Racquet Club at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 5th. The added provision will deal with multiple violations in a short period of time by vehicles registered within the same household. Pending LMA Board approval at the meeting the proposal will become effective immediately after the meeting. The proposed provision will deal with dangerous driving habits within the same household and hopefully will make the streets in our community safer.
The proposed addition to the current speeding policy is as follows: If a resident household has three (3) or more speeding violations of 10 miles per hour or more over the speed limit within a 60 day period, (even if those violations are by different vehicles and/or different drivers), the decals of all vehicles in that household that violated the speed limit within that 60 day period shall have their decals suspended for 30 days. A subsequent violation by any of those vehicles during the decal suspension period shall add 60 additional days to the decal suspension of said vehicles.
