By Norman Olshansky, Landings Management Association It appears that more of our residents have been spending time outside the Landings this past month as a way to get a reprieve from being isolated during the pandemic. Just be safe. Hopefully, a vaccine will be available soon. Speaking of vaccines, if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to get the annual flu vaccine. Publix is offering $10 gift cards if you get the shot there. Due to the pandemic, LMA did not sponsor a Halloween walk this year. We are so disappointed, especially for the children in the Landings. This has been a great event each year. The surveys are in and the ENA committee will be reviewing the results and presenting a report, hopefully at our November meeting. We received a lot of excellent input. The committee is well aware of the financial stress we are under given the roads situation, so it is unlikely that anything will be recommended that involves significant costs. I have been meeting with interested residents and we will be holding more opportunities for input once the committee has concluded its work. On Thursday, October 1 at 7pm, during the regular meeting

of the Landings Management Association (LMA), the proposed budget for 2021 will be presented and discussed. This is going to be a difficult year given all of the repairs we expect as our community ages. We also have to consider the feasibility, timing and costs of several major capital projects, such as roads, lakes, gates and overall security. There will likely be a slight increase to our annual fee for the first time in several years. To attend by Zoom contact Dick Bayles for the Zoom log in. The proposed budget appears in this issue of the Eagle. We are ready to begin road work

on Peregrine Point Drive. This is a major/costly project that will unfortunately require disruption to traffic and parking for nearby residents for a couple of weeks. Your cooperation and understanding during this project will be greatly appreciated. The Board will be considering timing and ways to fund necessary road work in other areas of the Landings. The County has a new ordinance that will affect a few homeowners a nd sm a l ler associat ion s. Landscaping and lawn care on County right-of-ways by County roads are now the responsibility of the land owners and not the County. This will especially impact those who have property that extends to the east side of the Landings wall along Phillipi Shores. Notices to those affected should be received by the time you read this column. I hope you a re usi ng t he community directory and other important features on the LMA website. Past minutes, vendor recom mendat ions, items for sale, blogs, and important information can be found at thelandingsofsarasota.com. Log into the resident site for lots of great information. The proposed LMA 2021 budget on this page wThe proposed LMA 2020 Fiscal/Calendar year budget sets the Annual Assessment for a single unit at $1,349 representing an increase of $49.00 in our operating budget and a $19.00 increase in our annual reserve requirement. The proposed LMA 2021 budget on this page will be reviewed at the October 1, 2020 regular board meeting. There is at least one area where

the 2021 costs are not clearly known at the time this article was written – landscaping and irrigation. There is potential for those costs to increase or decrease. The final budget will be adopted at the November 5th board meeting. For entire 2020 forecast and 2021 budget, see pages 14-15.

PLEASE help to reduce the chances of theft by locking cars and doors to your homes. Also, if you see anything suspicious, please notify the front gate. It’s time to consider running for a seat on the LMA Board. The nominating committee has started its work and is chaired by Joan Koplin. Please contact Joan 2joankoplin@gmail.com or me directly nfpconsultingresources@ gmail.com if you are interested in being considered for a board position. We are all concerned about the tragic accident that Augie (our long-time security guard) and his partner Marie experienced last month while he was visiting her mother in the Villages. Marie is staying with him while she recovers. Unfortunately, they did not have insurance.A private collection of funds was initiated to be of assistance. Thanks to Jay Rock who lead that effort and all those who contributed. I know that Augie has been most appreciative of the support.

LMA Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt LMA President Norm Olshansky began Zoom meeting by announcing the following during his President’s Report: • Rooms to Go finally cut the grass for which they’re responsible. • The Safety and Security Committee is waiting to determine if a resident is going to file a decal suspension appeal. • A final proposed 2021 budget will be discussed and approved at a special meeting on September 15. • Members were asked to submit committee reports in time to review them prior to board meetings. • After much delay, Argus finally provided their completed audit. A representative reported they would reduce the fee for the audit and make The Landings their number one priority should they be asked to do an audit again. • The Eagles Nest Area Committee will review the results of a survey done to determine the area’s future use. Input was excellent and progress is continuing. • Security staff member, Augie, and his partner Marie were involved in a tragic accident last month and did not have insurance. Individuals who wish to contribute can do so to a fund set up by Jay Rock. Mike Knupp has details.

FINANCE REPORT Treasurer Dick Bayles reported a current surplus of about $6,000 in the annual budget. Liens have been filed against eight homeowners with past due assessment amounts totaling $16,256. Bayles expects payment to be made eventually. After a meeting with a Circuit City representative, assurance was made their balance due of $5,968 would be processed and paid quickly.

PROPOSED 2021 BUDGET The proposed 2021 budget reflects an increase to the annual assessment to homeowners of $68. Potential changes regarding budget items will be discussed at the October LMA board meeting, and the final budget will be voted on at the November meeting. A motion was made to publish the proposed 2021 budget in the next issue of The Eagle. The motion passed unanimously.

A Heartfelt Thank You to The Landings Community

PEREGRINE POINT DRIVE ROADS PROJECT Work may begin on this extensive project as early as September 28. The $490,000 project is expected to take 48-50 days unless delayed by rains or storms. Ten bid requests were made to area contractors. Of those ten, six contractors attended the bidders’ meeting. The Roads Committee received 3 bids and recommended the Gator Grading and Paving bid be accepted. The island destruction and reconstruction into two narrower islands and extensive curbing along the street accounts for about $75,000 of the $490,000 bid. A 10 percent contingency of $49,000 was also included to provide for any surprises. Stantec Engineering accomplished the pre-construction engineering tasks and will also monitor all the reconstruction and paving during the project. In addition to the re-paving project, $35,000 has been set aside to correct drainage at the end of Peregrine Point Drive. This expense will be charged against drainage reserves. Expenses to irrigate and landscape the new islands is expected to cost under $6,000. During the discussion, LMA President Norm Olshansky noted scheduling additional roadwork could potentially be a major financial challenge for The Landings. A motion was made to move forward with the contract from Gator Grading and Paving provided they can begin the work within the next three weeks. The motion passed unanimously.

Marie’s recovery from this horrific golf cart accident. God bless ever yone a nd thank you. I will continue to keep everyone safe and secure to the best of my ability.” Always, Capt. Augie Cafarelli

LAKES Co-Chair, Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder reported on work being done on the east fountain in Lake 6 and on the drainage faults in Lakes 4 and 5 which should be completed before the end of September. A county consultant will suggest alternatives to re-planting the area behind Landings South IV for the fourth time. The proposal will include removing invasive plants that prevent native plants from flourishing. On July 20 the Drainage Committee did a walk around review assessment of Landings Lakes with Will Howell, owner of Howell Concrete and Land Services Inc. A report of this assessment was provided to board members. One form of mitigation common to both the environmental issue on Lake 7 and the erosion issue on Lake 5 is the removal of Brazilian pepper trees. Bids from contractors will be solicited. The plan is to share the cost of removal equally with LRC once a bid is accepted and approved. The committee asks residents who see fountains that are pulsing or making noise to inform their Association President or call Michael Knupp or Jeff Smith to shut the fountain off until a contractor can address the problem.

COMMUNITY EVENTS - HALLOWEEN Chairman Doug Day requested input from The Board about this year’s event. In consideration of safety, the Halloween program was cancelled.

Uptick in Burglaries in The Area Sarasota County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Deputy, Karen Hicks Over the Labor Day weekend, we received a message from Sarasota County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Deputy, Karen Hicks, informing us that they have seen an increase in vehicle burglaries and stolen vehicles in the area during the past few weeks. She reminded the residents to lock car doors and to remove valuable items including key fobs from vehicles. She also stated, “as always, see something, say something.” Fast forward to September 8. The Landings’ Security Officer, Lieutenant Berry, reported that several vehicles in the Landings were burglarized in the early morning by a darkly clad bicyclist. Around 5:05 AM after the roving patrol officer’s shift had ended, Officer Berry was contacted by our daily newspaper delivery man, Mr. Wendell, regarding a suspicious individual he witnessed committing suspicious acts. Mr. Wendell first saw the suspected burglar rum maging inside a vehicle parked in front of Landings Point. He then saw the same man, wearing all black including a mask and backpack, attempting

to manipulate the door handle of a vehicle on Starling Drive, all of which was reported to Landings Security. Lieutenant Berry immediately contacted the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Several Sarasota C o u n t y s h e r i f f ’s d e p u t i e s

“As always, if you see something, say something.” responded within minutes and began to patrol The Landings. At approximately 5:25 AM, Lieutenant Berry witnessed the suspected burglar on a silver bike wearing all black including a cap and face mask fleeing through the Main Gate into The Landings shopping center. Sheriff deputies gave chase and apprehended and arrested a 34-year old white male and took him into custody. He is charged with one count of prowling, two counts of drug possession and three counts of burglary. The police reviewed video from

all three gates and observed the suspect attempting to exit the locked South Gate before exiting the main gate. However, they could not determine when or where he entered the Landings. It is important that anyone who experienced a theft on the morning of September 8th reports it to the Sheriff’s Office at their nonemergency phone number: (941) 316-1201! We want to remind everyone to follow Deputy Hick’s advice to lock car doors, remove valuable items including key fobs from vehicles, keep your garage closed and lock all outside doors at night or when you are not at home. Landings Security reported 41 garage doors left open in the month of August. Like Mr. Wendell did, ”IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING”. Finally, we want to thank the Sarasota Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff’s Deputy Bassett, Guard One’s Lieutenant Berry and our morning paper delivery man, Mr. Wendell, for their quick responses to the incident. A job well done by all.

Developer seeking to add 16 dwelling units to Siesta Promenade Project Both parcels are in Pine Shores Estates, the residential community adjacent to the Siesta Promenade site. This year, the market value of the property at 6339 Glencoe Ave. was placed at $206,200 and the property at 6331 Glencoe was placed at $240,200. In both cases, the land made up most of that with a market value of $188,200, the Property Appraiser’s Office records show. The Sarasota County Com m i ssion h ad prev iously approved a variety of petitions to enable Benderson to develop the Siesta Promenade. As designed, the project would include a 130room hotel, 133,000 square feet of retail space and 7,000 square feet of office space. A county Development Review Committee (DRC) document,

In 2012, Dr. Pennie took over a solo practice in Englewood from a retiring physician. She had moved to Sarasota a year prior and was ready to stay put after moving her twin boys from Atlanta and then St. Louis for her training. Medical dermatology requires patience and innovation along with a thirst for lifelong learning and exploration. Dr. Pennie is a board-certified dermatologist and a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. In fact, she is one of only a handful of dermatologists on the west coast of Florida to complete a year-long fellowship training program in Mohs micrographic surgery. Keeping Fido Flexible: How to Handle Canine Joint Health By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist Not ice a nyt h i ng different about your do g l at e ly? I f t h e y happen to be moving a l it t le slower t h a n they used to, take note: it could be the result of aging—or it could be something more. From playing fetch to bounding up and down the stairs, your dog’s joints see a lot of action. Over time, that action leads to natural wea r a nd tea r a nd, i f left u naddressed, ca n a lso resu lt i n joint-related issues and injuries, reducing mobility and quality of life. He r e ’s h ow you c a n t r e at and, even better, prevent joint problems for your pup.

Prevention to Avoid Pain We used to think that canine joint issues like arthritis were simply due to wear and tear and the affects of aging. While that’s still often true, years of study have shown that consistent i r r itat ion f rom lo w - g rad e inflammation is a major factor as well. Thankfully there are some easy ways to mai ntai n your dog’s health to prevent i n f la m m at ion, st a r t i ng w it h weight ma nagement. As you might expect, the less load your pup has to carry, the less stress they’ll experience on their joints. Moreover, unwanted fat can also contribute to inflammation. Like we stated previously in our July

2020 piece on canine obesity, ident i f y i ng you r dog’s idea l weight based on their breed, size and age can help you avoid weight-related health issues. So, consult with your vet or an expert at your local pet supply retailer. From t here, fo c us on a wh ole s o m e, nut r it io u s d i e t built on a foundation of robust protein, natural antioxidants a nd fat t y ac id s to m a i nt a i n that target weight and reduce i n f lam mat ion. Rich protei n s build and repair muscle and tissue, while antioxidants and fatty acids reduce inflammation a nd swel l i ng. Nat u ral a nt i inflammatories include foods like blueberries, turmeric, fatty fish, sweet potatoes, ginger root, spinach, and pumpkin. They are proven safe, help prevent chronic inflammation in younger dogs, and reduce painful joint swelling in older, arthritic dogs. Dog food ma nu fact u rers are also now making quality foods specifically formulated to

address joint health. For example, bone broth is loaded with glycosaminoglycan (glucosamine) and compounds like chond roit i n a nd hya lu ron ic ac id. Glycosaminoglycan are resistant to digestion and are absorbed i ntact. Once absorbed, they then act like hormones, st i mulat i ng cel ls, a nd deliveri ng collagen to joints, tendons, ligaments and even arteries to aid elasticity. As a preventative measure, small dogs and big dogs alike shou ld re ceive m a i nten a nce doses of t hese addit ives b e g i n n i n g at a n e a rly ag e. Regular dosage can help limit joint issues or even prevent a torn ACL, a canine injury that is becoming quite common—and cost ly. Ke ep i n m i nd: wh i le t he s e add it ive s help r e duce inflammation, they shouldn’t be considered a cure. Additionally, it’s critical that your pup is getting enough water. Proper hydration keeps joints properly lubricated, allowing them to move and flex as needed. Conversely, dehydrat ion ca n stiffen tendons and ligaments, intensifying pain in arthritic dogs and increasing the risk for injury. Fi n a l ly, ke ep ‘em mov i ng. Reg u l a r e xe r c i s e a id s b o dy conditioning boosting muscle mass and function, and reducing

the potential for injury to joints and connective tissue.

When it’s Time for Treatment If the prevent ion sh ip h a s s a i le d a nd you r dog i s ex per ienc i ng joi nt pa i n a nd restricted movement, don’t fret: there are a number of treatment options available. Assuming it’s still early and symptoms haven’t progressed too far, it might make sense to explore some natural remedies. O ne popu la r product i s Ca n i neAct iv, a sa fe, n at u ra l anti-in flammatory made with AlphaGee® a nat urally occurring amino acid that’s also endogenous in canine physiology. A n o t h e r i s L iq u id He a lt h’s K 9 Le vel 5 0 0 0 Concent rated Glucosamine Chondroitin for dogs. Unlike many conventional joint medications, K9 Level 5000 won’t cause liver damage. And even something as simple as CBD oil can be effective. While CBD oil won’t treat the cause of your pup’s joint paint, it does offer some relief. If joint issues have progressed to a greater severity, it might be time to take more drastic action. T h i s ca n i nclude su rger y to clean or replace joints, physical therapy via ultrasound, electric stimulation and other methods, medication, or some combination of the three. It should be noted though that while non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications ( NSAIDs), of fer a r educ t ion of i n f l a m m at ion , pa i n , a nd fever, they can also create side effects like vomiting, diarrhea,

decreased appetite, and liver or kidney damage. But if you haven’t reached that point and your pup is happy, healthy and moving like they should, keep it that way. Ask your veterinarian or local independent pet retailer to help educate you on proper nutrition, healthy additives, regular exercise and hydration to prevent joint issues.

The portico column reconstruction was done by the end of August and we’ve contracted for the replacement of the roof of the portico and Pro Shop along with the replacement of the joists and plywood damaged by long-time leaks. Having recovered from the lightning-caused internet and Wi-Fi outage of last month, we’ve changed our Wi-Fi naming. If you connect to LRC-Guest, it will follow you in all the buildings. You should see better outdoor coverage as well; the new routers are more powerful than the ones they replaced.

For the foreseeable future, LRC board meet i ngs on the th i rd Tuesday of the month will be held using the Zoom app and will be accessible by PC or smartphone. If you want to participate, send an email to lrctennis@hotmail.com by the day before and an invitation to register will be sent to you. The times and days may vary and will be noted in the preceding week’s Friday email. The An nual Meeting of the Club is on January 19, 2021 at 7:00PM. There are three seats up for election. Any member who intends to run for election must submit a written notice and any materials to be mailed in the Annual Meeting package to Kevin by the end of day December 5, 2020. Given COVID-19, it is unlikely that we will have a traditional meeting, so attending by proxy will be more important in January than at any time before. Stay safe, everyone!

The LHA Monthly Meeting Notes By Dick Bayles The Landings Homeowners Association held its regular board meeting on September 10, 2020. The Treasu rer discussed a proposed 2021 budget for the Association, which set an Annual Assessment at $200.00, unchanged f rom 2020. Con sider i ng t he increased frequency of storms and our recent experience with drainage problems, the budget includes reasonable increases in both. A copy of the budget is included in this issue. The board reviewed plans for a new residence on Lot 85 and will review some concerns with the

owner and builder. It approved replacement roof tile on Flicker Field Circle and Peregrine Point Circle N. In response to an owner on Pine Harrier Circle, the board requested additional information on a planned covered patio addition. The next regular board meeting of the Association is scheduled for 7:00PM October 9, 2020 at the Landings Racquet Club. If an owner wishes to attend the meeting, advanced notice is requested (via e-mail to whitman@cs.com), masks are required, and social distancing guidelines must be maintained.

Directors. If you are interested, you must submit your name and a brief list of your qualifications to Kevin Lechlitner in the Tennis Pro Shop by December 5th. There are three positions up for election. They are Dick Bayles, Sue LewisGarrett and John Fournier. If we have more people interested in being on the Board than available openings, there will be an election at the LRC Annual Meeting in January of 2021. By the time you read this, the annual court resurfacing project should be completed. This year courts 1 - 4 each received 1.5 tons of Har-Tru and kept their existing

lines. Courts 5 – 8 each received over 4 tons of Har-Tru and new line tapes. Next year courts 1 – 4 will get the more thorough resurfacing. It alternates every year. To help keep the newly resurfaced courts in great condition, please brush the court if your match finishes after 5:00 PM. There is a drag brush hanging on each set of courts. As I mentioned last month, the Father/Son tournaments won’t be taking place this year due to the COVID pandemic. We had a good run of tournaments the last 27 years in a row. Hopefully we can start a new streak in November of 2021.

As you might have heard, the Tri-City League season has been cancelled for 2020 due to the pandemic. This gives you a chance to work on your game without any pressure to put into play in a real match what you just learned. Now is a great opportunity to work on your serve mechanics, return of serve consistency, and accuracy. But being more consistent and confident at the net, to do your job

Island Visitor Publishing, LLC

properly, is extremely important. You must know proper positioning and how to follow the ball correctly. Remember that you are the X-factor on the court. You have a big influence on the outcome of the point! When your teammate is serving, you have the opportunity to play good offense by creating a lot of pressure on the returner to get the ball by you so that you don’t attack their teammate at the net. However, if you are the net player and your teammate is returning serve or hitting a ground stroke in the middle of the point, you need to be ready to play defense, in case your teammate is receiving a difficult ball and unintentionally gives the net player an easy offensive shot. In that case, the net player needs to be by the service line or back up slightly into “no woman’s land” to be ready to play defense. Every time your teammate gets the ball by the

opposite net player, then you need to move forward again into your offensive position and try to steal the ball from the opposing baseline player. Remember, the net players never stay still at the net, but usually move a lot if they are following the ball correctly. The net players have to be extremely alert to where the ball is on the court. Sometimes, you might feel like there is a lot of chaos on the court. This is where you need to be very calm. With the right training and practice you will be on automatic pilot and always be in the right place. There has been an increase in interest in our clinics. Please remember ,if you can’t attend a clinic you have signed up for, to cancel at least 24 hours in advance so that we may have the opportunity to fill the spot from the waiting list.

Siesta Key Fashions  Key Village in March of this year. This eclectic boutique is an artinspired, trendy yet timeless treasure trove of wearable art in cottons, linens, silks, and other high-quality natural fibers. Not surprisingly, owner Marie Louise Leuenberger is a nature-lover and a caretaker of the environment. Born in Switzerland, she and her husband lived in Africa for 20 years before settling in Sarasota. These world citizens instantly felt drawn to our little Key and

The store offers casual and unique sundresses, tops and bottoms, and artful pieces put together for comfort and style along with unique gifts and treasures from the Himalayas,

The Story behind Larissa’s Beautiful Gemstone…

SIGSBEE DEEP THIRD COAST

Larimar is an extremely rare gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic. It Answers on Page 45 was originally discovered in 1916 then later re-discovered in 1974 by Norman Riling, a member of the U.S. Peace corps and Miguel Mendez. Mendez combined his daughter’s name Larissa (Lari) with the Spanish word, sea (mar). Often purchased by families for their daughters because of the special symbolism of mother, father, daughter - to represent the union of family. The stone is formed when hot gasses push crystalized minerals up through volcanic “tubes.” Most small blocks of Larimar are in situ, meaning they exist in the very place they were formed. However, through soil erosion, some pieces broke off and were moved by rainfall down the slopes of the hillsides and rivers. The river deposited them in the Caribbean Sea where some pieces washed up on the seashore by the waves. In order to excavate the Larimar gemstone, miners must dig deep into the mouths of the vast volcanos. Larimar’s exquisite light blue color often seems to capture the beautiful blue colors of the sea and sky found in the Caribbean. For that reason, it is also sometimes known as the Caribbean gem. Larimar is considered a healing stone and the Atlantis stone because it is claimed that some islands in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic, where part of the lost continent of Atlantis. Today, thousands of people, including holistic practitioners, use Larimar to assist and re-enforce healing processes. Many customers at Silver City have discovered that their collection of Larimar is the one of the largest collections in Sarasota. See the vast selection in person or online at www.Silvercitysarasota.com.

maintain a colony of this rare fish. Dr. Taylor pointed out that as the mangroves are cut down and the mangrove forests diminish, many species of fish become endangered/ extinct as is the case of the Rivulus on the east coast of Florida. It seems unbelievable – but true!

INQUIRING MINDS B ev a nd K at y L eidel, long time Landings residents, were fascinated with this rare fish d i s cove r y i n t he m a ng rove s and in the back-drain waters behind ten n is courts #3 & 4. Bev found an article in Bottom Line Personal magazine, vol. 41, number 17, Sept. 1, 2020: “...f ish eggs ca n st i l l hatch after being eaten and popped out by ducks! Not many of them make it, but a few do. This may explain why new fish species sometimes show up in isolated bodies of water.” This study was led by researchers at the Cent re for Ecological Research, Debrecen, Hu n g a r y, p u b l i s h e d b y t h e National Academy of Sciences.

Just for laughs   “You grow up the day you have the first real laugh--at yourself.” Those words from Ethel Barrymore seem so true especially in comical situations life brings to us. Funny things happen: “You know when you’re getting old,” she said, “when you tell your best friend you’re having an affair and she asks, “Is it catered?”   Vegan said to me, “People who sell meat are gross!” I said, “People who sell fruit and veg. are grocer.”   If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you!
