Landings Eagle - November 2022

Hurricane Ian packs a punch at The Landings

Considering early warnings predicted The Landings would take a direct hit by Hurricane Ian, we were more fortunate than our neighbors to the south. Maybe the old Indian legend saved us yet again from a direct hit. Still, The Landings had substantial tree damage throughout the community. To our knowledge, there was very little structural damage.

As winds abated on Thursday, we got our first look at what had happened to our beautiful community. Trees were down everywhere including across our streets.

Our usual tree company, Troyer Trees, was contacted but were not able to respond that day but would probably be available the next day. As luck would have it, a tree service from St Petersburg took a wrong turn following their GPS right into the north gate.

LMA Vice President Jeff Smith and Security Chair Mike Knupp were called to the North Gate to see what the tree company was doing in The Landings with seven or eight fully equipped trucks and equipment.

After questioning the company manager and checking their licenses and making sure they had the proper insurance, we took the manger and his foreman (turns out the foreman and his father own the company) on a tour of The Landings to determine if they could give us an estimate to clean up the community. Considering the uncertainty about response time and the need for road clearance especially with regard to possible emergency vehicles, we received an estimate from Proper Cut. After consultation with LMA President Elida Ramberger and LMA Board member and Landscape Chair Paul Weiner, we accepted the estimate and Proper Care Tree Care began the cleanup on Thursday afternoon.

The agreement with Proper Care required them to clear trees and debris from every street and the ten foot right of way on both sides of the street. In accordance with FEMA procedures, the contractor is required to stack the debris in piles along the roadway in anticipation of FEMA contractors hauling it away. Proper Care completed most of the work on Monday clearing the streets and stacking the debris. In addition, they cleared the nature trail at no additional cost to the LMA.

Next came the task of removal which turns out to be far more difficult than we could have imagined. Because of massive destruction in south Sarasota and Charlotte Counties, FEMA resources are currently overwhelmed, and we anticipate many weeks will pass before we would see FEMA contractors in our area. In addition, Sarasota County is responsible to identify FEMA approved disposal sites for Sarasota County debris. They identified sites in north Sarasota off MLK Way (6 miles), at the end of Bee Ridge (10 miles) and the County solid waste site off Laurel Road in Nokomis (20 miles). Sarasota County began to provide updates on debris removal, assigning zones of cleanup with estimated dates for cleanup.

Unfortunately, because The Landings streets are private, even at press time, the County has not designated any estimated pickup dates for The Landings. Faced with this uncertainty, it was decided we should seek other options for transportation of debris. Proper Care was approached to see if they had the equipment resources to take on the task. They gave us a day-rate price to load and carry the debris to the nearest

Court Championships Return

We are treated to a week of great tennis with nationally ranked players from all over the country.

The role of our tournament ambassadors is to welcome their team upon arrival, answer any questions, and whenever possible, follow their team’s matches.

The games begin on Tuesday, Nov. 15th with the Ultra Seniors (father in his 80s).

The Super Seniors (70s) start playing on Wednesday, Nov. 16th; and Seniors (60s), start playing on Thursday November 17th.

Choose a day you can make your team feel welcome. It has been our great courts, nostalgia with the players, and Landings Ambassadors that keep the players returning year after year for the past 30 years. We will continue giving out t-shirts and enjoy the same great tennis performances up close and personal throughout the week.

This year, we are happy to announce the tournament players’ luncheon will be again

hosted by the “Kitchen Ladies’ Ambassadors and friends on Thursday, November 17th.

Volunteers contribute one potluck dish enough to serve 10 people for the luncheon. We will also need servers who can set-up or breakdown for the day (along with our Committee Members: Margo Cesar, Valentina Bruno and Gayle Marval).

The luncheons run from 11:00am - 1:30pm and is served in the Lakeside Clubhouse. We kindly ask you to bring your dish in at 10:00am since setup will begin around that time. We also ask hosts to help for an hour or so on Thursday or Friday to set out any

landfill 6 miles away. Upon arrival at the site, Proper Care was informed the site was only open to residents in private vehicles and to FEMA approved contractors with Sarasota addresses on their driver’s licenses. Proper Care was turned away and instructed to go to the County facility 20 miles south in Nokomis and wait in line to dump the waste and pay the fees.

After several calls to the County, we were informed they had to follow FEMA rules and we had no other choice than to send the waste to Nokomis. As of press time, Proper Care has removed appropriately 50% of the debris.

The estimated cost for the clean-up will probably exceed $130,000. Part of the cost will be offset by a substantial contribution from the Landings Homeowners Association. We will also explore reimbursement from FEMA and if applicable, our insurance coverage.

We thank all our residents for their patience in completing this work. We also want to acknowledge the work of Proper Care Tree Care staff, especially owner Yeiner Lopez and project manager Ken Spenser.

leftovers.

Please sign up at the Pro Shop and confirm what potluck dish you will bring (suggestions: hot dish, salads, deli meats, cheeses, breads, pizza, fruits, desserts or just use your imagination). Also, confirm the time you can serve at the luncheon or just be a helper. Remember to label your dish for return.

If you want to volunteer as an ambassador, please contact: Ralph or Dee Ricapito, at 941927-6261(home) or 941-356-7912(cell), or sign in the folder in the Racquet Club.

Again, thank you, for your efforts in giving the “tournament” that special Landings touch.

Any questions, please give Ralph and Dee a call.

President’s Report

We can count our lucky stars, or however you thank the universe for our gentle treatment by Ian. Our guardhouses and the gazebo are in fine shape. The kayak racks are upright. A few kayaks were askew Thursday morning but did not appear damaged. We are lucky to have had Sheri and Bob Golicher and Ron Pierce removing trees and limbs wherever it was safe to do so early Thursday morning. They were able to open some roads. Our good luck continued when Proper Cut tree service arrived, uninvited, Thursday morning. The best news is that the roads were cleared for emergency vehicles by evening. Since then, the tree service has been busily removing vegetation that interferes with the roads. The entrance to the Nature Trail was cleared, at no expense to LMA. Proper Cut continues their work by removing debris.

The cleanup has been a neighborhood effort. LMA especially wants to express its gratitude to the Homeowners Association for contributing to the cost of debris removal. On behalf of the board, I would also like to thank all the neighbors who shared their positive experiences after the hurricane and reached out to thank all the volunteers who worked to make our roads safe.

A very big thanks goes to the person who called the Tampa radio station to report on the lack of flooding in The Landings, but the many trees downed in The Landings. The very industrious owner at Proper Cut located The Landings, researched our neighborhood, and decided to take a gamble to bring equipment on Thursday to begin work. Two of our Emergency Committee members met with and surveyed the need with Proper Cut and decided that in the emergency circumstance the company could be engaged to restore access to our roads.

I just mentioned the Emergency Committee. The

members, Safety and Security Chair, Mike Knupp, Landscaping Chair, Paul Weiner, Lakes and Drainage Chair, Jeff Smith, and Roads Committee Chair, Elida Ramberger, convened to coordinate needed services across the committees. The coordination produced the results we all are enjoying. All four chairs have recommended that the Emergency Committee become a standing committee, perhaps under Safety and Security, to develop processes for responding to all types of emergencies. The most important lesson we learned is that communication tools that we rely on, aren’t always available, and need back-up.

While we were clearing, raking and piling debris, the LMA contract with Pinnacle Community Management was signed. After legal review and a few very minor changes, the service agreement and consulting contract received legal approval. We will arrange for a “get acquainted” meeting when the dust settles. In the meantime, please direct questions regarding Pinnacle to me. The board will establish a primary contact with Pinnacle after the transition. Pinnacle becomes our management company of record on November 1st. Heather Hamilton and Jason Hamilton are co-owners of Pinnacle and the people who will manage our board meetings.

Another change we hope will occur with upcoming board meeting is a change in venue. The goal is to have meetings in a location that utilizes technology for seamless hybrid Zoom meetings. Luckily, the Sarasota School Administration Office reports having such a facility. An ad hoc committee, Sue Camins, John Schmidt, Neil Goldman and Jeff Smith have volunteered to pursue better communications for meetings. Ultimately, the location they organize may be LRC.

Red tide detected at several area beaches, including Siesta’s Turtle Beach

Siesta Key’s Turtle Beach was one of eight Sarasota County beaches to possess elevated levels of red tide, an Oct. 17 water test indicated. Siesta Beach had not been impacted as of the deadline for The Landings Eagle.

The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County posted warning signage Oct. 20 at the beaches to advise the public that red tide is present.

The beaches affected are: Turtle Beach, Nokomis Beach, North Jetty, Venice Beach, Service Club Park, Venice Fishing Pier, Brohard Beach, and Caspersen Beach.

LMA Meeting Notes

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger began the meeting by announcing the following during the president’s report:

• Ramberger introduced Heather and Jacob Hamilton of Pinnacle Community Development, The Landing’s new management company. They will assume management effective on November 1, 2022.

• The next LMA Board meeting will take place at the Sarasota County School Administration building outside the Main Gate entrance. The location is being changed to facilitate a substantial improvement in the use of technology. The board will communicate more information regarding this change soon. Upgrading the technical capabilities of the Lakeside Room is being discussed.

• The minutes of the last LMA Meeting were presented and approved.

• Ramberger expressed thankfulness for the limited damage from hurricane Ian. Roads were cleared for use by emergency vehicles by Thursday evening.

• Proper Cut tree service was hired to remove trees, palms, debris and cleared the entrance to the Nature Trail. The Homeowner’s Association was thanked for contributing to the cost of removal.

• An Emergency Committee was formed to coordinate needed services after hurricane Ian.

• A community event will be scheduled to discuss the needed Special Assessment.

• A few youthful Landing’s youngsters were reminded fishing for alligators is prohibited.

FINANCE REPORT AND 2023 BUDGET

Treasurer, Harvey Greller reported a year-to-date budget surplus of $44,725. This will change because about $125,000 will be spent on hurricane cleanup which will create a budget deficit by year’s end. Past due accounts have been turned to the LMA attorney for collection and total $9,266.

The Finance Committee met to discuss the 2023 Budget and to discuss the reserve issues regarding the coming road’s project.

The current 2022 budget is $1,305 per owner. The committee offered the board two budget options. The first recommends raising the annual assessment per owner for 2023 to $1,696. Budget considerations were made for the following:

• A 5% increase was made for inflation.

• Exterior wall repair.

• Security issues (i.e., salaries, hours etc.).

• Daytime roving patrol.

The second budget proposal recommends raising the annual assessment per owner for 2023 to $1,874. This would pay for expenses to make the North and South Gates more secure. A new gate system would prevent pedestrians from freely walking into The Landing’s.

The recommendations will need to be voted on by the board.

Safety and Security Committee chair, Mike Knupp explained the security issues creating part of the

The 37th annual Light Up Siesta Village Holiday Parade will be held Saturday, Nov. 26. Festivities start at 5 p.m., beginning at Siesta Center Plaza, 5053 Ocean Blvd.

New this year is the judging and awarding of prizes for parade entries.

assessment increase. These included purchase of a golf cart with lights to be shared by Security and Maintenance and adding an additional daytime roving patrol.

More than a half hour of discussion and questions transpired by board members and those who attended the meeting in person or by Zoom.

A motion was made for the board to approve the expenditures made by the hurricane Ian Emergency Task Force of up to $150,000. The motion passed.

A second motion was made for the board to submit the lower budget proposal for a vote on November 3rd.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communications Chair, John Schmidt clarified what the committee wanted to do about improving meeting communications. They took an in depth look at the challenges and determined the technology in the Lakeside Room would not adequately provide the clear experience needed for board members and residents during the meetings. As a result of their research, they agreed to use host meetings using the upgraded technology of the School Board conference room. Options to upgrade the technology in the Lakeside Room are being considered. A technology upgrade could cost around $17,000.

LAKES/DRAINAGE

Committee chair, Jeff Smith reported all outflow structures were inspected and cleared prior to the hurricane. A fallen tree in the Cloisters was removed prior to the storm and Lake 3 was drained by 2½ feet. Overflow from the lakes ran unimpeded to the end of the mangroves and only minor flooding resulted from the storm.

Admiral Environmental wetland crews are working to remove debris from the lakes. Debris removal is expected to be completed by October 15th.

Repair of the fountain on Lake 1 was storm delayed but will be completed soon.

Results of the storm and more moderate temperatures are expected to reduce challenges with algae in all the Lakes.

The committee is awaiting approval by Sarasota County Environmental to remove the Cloisters stump. Funding is available in the current budget.

The following capital projects are expected to begin in the next six weeks. Each has either been funded by the current budget or approved by capital expense.

• Remediate the bank slope of a drainage ditch leading to the Cloisters.

• Remediation of the Carriage Lake retaining wall.

• Remediation of eroded areas on Heron and Courtside Lakes.

The meeting ended by thanking all neighbors who spent countless hours organizing and participating in Hurricane cleanup.

Big Turnout at Inaugural Social Event of Season

Over 100 Landings residents showed up for the first social event of the season. The event was a party to celebrate the upcoming wedding of Kevin Lechlitner, LRC General Manager, and his fiancée Amy McConnell.

We got to hear the story of how they met; Kevin had two days left on his dating site subscription and was ready to swear off online dating altogether. Amy’s tenacious

daughter Colleen had other ideas and swiped right for Kevin on behalf of her mom. They were both enchanted by the photo of Kevin with a koala bear!

After a first date at P.F. Chang’s, a second date followed at Casey Key Fish House where they closed the joint down, and the rest is history! An intimate wedding will be held on December 10th, followed by an early 2023 honeymoon in Napa Valley, CA.

We are so thrilled for Kevin and Amy!

Thanks to Beverly Austgen, Sue Ault, and Jill Cristo for their elegant decorations, and to Betty and Rich Greenspan for welcoming our guests. Olivia from LRC desk prepared a very special video, and we had a great team of helpers to serve champagne and cleanup. What a treat to come together for this joyful occasion!

Please mark your calendar for our busy

social season, with upcoming events like the Halloween Party on Wednesday November 2nd and an Inaugural Beach Bash at Turtle Beach on Thursday November 10th. Signups will be posted at LRC pro shop about two weeks prior to events.

We had the blackened grouper, crab cakes and fish stew. It was seasoned and prepared perfectly! We found it because we were looking a place to eat after a movie, and if we hadn’t looked for reviews on TripAdvisor we would never have found it. It’s in a small plaza in the back corner and does not stand out. It was 45 minutes from where we were staying but it was so good we had to go back again. Each of the last 3 years we have stayed for 2 months on longboat key and this was the best seafood restaurant we’ve been to, hands down! It was nice to meet the owner who it turns out was from the town next to us in Connecticut. You must try it, but I would recommend reservations at dinner time as it’s a small place.”

Racquet Club News LRC President’s Report

Tempus does Fugit – as it’s November already. Where did the year go? But the past month has been quite busy for all of us, both personally and with regards to the LRC. I must brag about the LRC staff – as their thoroughness in preparing for Hurricane Ian had the club ready for the incredibly strong winds and heavy rains.

Our damage to the club was minimal. Yes, we lost various limbs, pieces of wood and one canopy on the courts, but given the damage other tennis clubs in Sarasota had, I am quite proud of how our team prepared and how our club not only survived but thrived. Perhaps our biggest damage was the wind bent over several of our tennis court fences. But with our staff and helpful

volunteers, we were able to fix the fences by pulling them back to vertical by pulling them upright with a Jeep.

Ultimately, our club was fully reopened on the Saturday after the hurricane – just incredible. Thank you to our staff and volunteers.

On the tennis front, many of

Manager’s Report

For our seasonal residents who spend their summers away from Sarasota, welcome back! Some have already returned, and others will be heading back soon. It has been an interesting summer for us.

Hurricane Ian was a little too close for comfort. We were lucky at the Club and managed to escape without any catastrophic damage. Also, as you are reading this, the stucco project for the exterior of the buildings at the Club should be nearing completion. Once the stucco cures, all that is left to do is apply the paint. I am very excited to see the new and improved look of the Club!

Thank you to all the members that were able to attend the engagement party for Amy and I last month. We were overwhelmed with the turnout of people. We were also blown away with the gifts and cards that we received. Thank you ever so much! They were all greatly appreciated. I have been fortunate to work in this community with such wonderful people for the last 16 years. The video that Olivia put together was fantastic! I wish the

you watched Roger Federer’s final match and retirement party. Thankfully, I was in a public restaurant watching it on the bar TV, otherwise, I would have shed a few (okay, a lot) of tears watching one of the greatest in our sport. Yes, I am unashamed to claim I’m his #1 fan (I think he has about a

million #1 fans, but I’m the real one, haha). One of his quotes that I’ve always liked was “It’s nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice”. What a pleasure it’s been to watch his graceful strokes on court.

As one of his competitors said about Roger once, “before the match, he’s your best friend and buddy in the locker room, asking how it was going, joking with you. He then goes on the court and absolutely demolishes you, basically giving you a tennis lesson. And then after the match in the locker room, your best buddies again”. I’ll miss watching Roger play tennis.

As you know, the FatherSon National Clay Court tournament starts in the middle of November. Even if you don’t

play tennis, it is worthwhile to come out and watch some of the best players in the nation. This is a big event, and our club, staff and volunteers do a fantastic job as our tournament gets ranked at the very top of favorite stops for these players. I can’t encourage you enough to stop by and watch a match or two.

As our winter residents begin to return, we’ll ramp up our social activities. If you haven’t joined one yet, I strongly encourage you to do so. Membership has privileges, and one of them is your chance to participate in our clubs’ activities. You don’t play tennis? No problem, there are lots of other things you can join in. I hope to see you there.

The Landings Racquet Club –tell only your best friends.

people in attendance could have heard the music that accompanied the video. It was very touching. Thank you to Mayson Brooks, Paige Packman, Beverly Austgen and, Sue Ault for organizing it and everyone else that helped decorate the room. I couldn’t ask for anything better.

November also means it is time for our annual Father/Son tournaments. The dates this year are November 15th – 20th. If you are interested in becoming an ambassador for the tournaments, please contact Ralph & Dee Ricapito at 9276261. This will be the 29th year The Landings has hosted the tournaments. Based on the number of phone calls and emails I have received over the last few weeks; I am expecting a great turnout of players.

Beginning November 1st, the peak time rule goes back into effect. It states that if you have a guest in your group at 9:30AM or 11:00 AM, you can only reserve the court one day in advance. Please see me in the Tennis Pro Shop if you have any questions about the Club’s guest policy.

I want to welcome all the members back that enjoy their summers up north. Jen, Sandra, and I stayed busy throughout the summer in the Florida heat and humidity. That said, we are very happy to start enjoying the cooler temperatures to play our favorite sport.

I want to give a big thank you to our staff that worked so hard to get our club facilities back and ready for us to enjoy after hurricane Ian. Kevin, Edvin, Hans, Olivia, and Gary along with Mayson Brooks, Bob Golicher, Ron Pierce and his brotherin-law Jary Emberger did an amazing job getting our club to look so beautiful again after an almost category 5 hurricane.

This season if you have never played triples tennis before I strongly encourage you to try it. It is one of the most popular tennis games in the world. Triples is three players on each side of the court. Two players are at the baseline and one player is in the center of the court at the net. The game is played almost exactly like doubles. The

baseline players try to protect their net player from the other net player and at the same time you want to set up your net player to finish the points. We always play triples in our cardio clinics. Triples is a fun social game that can be played with players of different levels. And it’s not as easy to hit winners and finish the points because there are three players on the other side. As you get more familiar with the game, the rallies are usually longer and more spectacular. Plus, the more you play it the more it can improve your doubles game.

We are so excited to have our Father and Son National Tournament back this year. The players are inspiring to watch as they try to win by covering their weaknesses against the best doubles combinations in the nation. Also, this year we will be able to enjoy all our normal traditions and activities that go along with this tournament. Come and watch if you are a new member and see why all of Sarasota loves this event. See you on the courts

Landings’ Volunteers Who

This is the fourth in a series of articles highlighting the work of special volunteers who help to make The Landings such a wonderful community. The Eagle interviewed Harry Moser, Secretary of the LMA Board of Directors.

Harry and Jo Moser previously lived in Illinois and Booth Bay, Maine. They still have the place in Maine where they spend the summers. When looking for places in Sarasota, their realtor raved about a unit that was available in a midrise on Eagles Point Circle. She told them it had the best views in the entire Landings. When they saw the unit, they were immediately interested and made the purchase in 2019.

Harry enjoys playing tennis, jogging, pickle ball, the LRC fitness center and Landings social activities. He continues to work full-time as the founder and President of the Reshoring Initiative, which takes up most of his time. The Initiative works to eliminate the goods trade deficit. They develop data on jobs coming back to the U.S. and promote information that will bring companies that are offshore back to the U.S. The Initiative provides analytical tools that help companies make decisions about where they can site their factories and source their needed products to conduct their business. The Initiative is also involved in public policy advocacy and governmental affairs that help to make companies more competitive.

As a new member of the

LMA Board and Secretary, he serves on the Executive Committee and has been working to update the board manual of policies and procedures. His goal is to also establish written standard operating procedures for the board.

When asked about what he finds most rewarding about serving on the board, he immediately mentioned how it has helped him meet a lot of the residents when they seek input and information. He has been very impressed with the time and quality of work that is done by committee chairs and board leadership. He also mentioned that he was happy to be able to secure helpful financing opportunities that will be available to residents who may need help when the roads assessment is initiated.

When asked about challenges he faces as a LMA board member, he noted that he has a lot of time constraints on his ability to get more involved since he continues to work full-time. He feels that one of the challenges of the board is to have meetings that focus on the big issues and less on smaller items that can be handled by committees. He also noted that technology to provide Zoom participation has not been up to standard and has resulted in many people who tried to log in to board meetings, not being able to hear or adequately participate.

For

He noted that improving the communications technology is one of the priorities of the board going forward.

While the roads project continues to be the major concern of the board, Harry noted that there is a need to begin long term planning around priorities, programs, and financing. He also thinks that LMA could benefit from more interaction and sharing of information with other similar gated communities. In the long run he feels that there needs to be better communication, collaboration and sharing of vendor resources between and among internal associations, LMA and the LRC.

Harry also noted that a new property management company has been hired effective November 1st. Argus Management has been replaced with Pinnacle Management. It will take a while to fully integrate them within LMA even though they have other client associations within The Landings.

The most important thing that Harry said in the interview was: “Jo and I love The Landings. The people are wonderful and it has been a great place to live.”

Yes, we have wonderful and talented leadership in The Landings and we are so fortunate that Harry and many others, volunteer and serve as leaders within LMA.

Announcing a New Season of the Photo Shop

After a four-month hiatus, The Photo Shop will be up and running again. Our first article of the season will appear in the December issue of the Eagle and will be dedicated to Street Photography.

For those unfamiliar with the term, “street photography” is not simply a street scene. It is, and has been since the invention of photography itself, a very popular photographic genre that records everyday activities in public spaces. While people are often the subjects of street photography, their presence is not a strict requirement. The suggestion that someone is there or may have been there is sometimes enough. Some type of interaction between the photographer and his or her subject, or between one subject and another is essential, be it direct or implied. I include one of my own street photographs to give you an idea of what we are looking for.

So those of you who have street photographs that you would like to share with the community, please send them to me, and I will see that they are included in the December issue.

The January issue will be dedicated to “forms and structures,” so, if you have any photographs that meet these criteria, start sending those in as well.

Send all photos to roberto@uri.edu.

Day Tripping By Betty Greenspan A Gamble Plantation Audible

A funny thing happened on the way to the Gamble Plantation. I should have known … We’ve known of Gamble Plantation in Ellenton for years but never visited and thought that a Saturday morning would be the perfect time. We checked the website and called for information, and both noted the “mansion” would be open.

We took I-75 to the Ellenton Exit and headed west for about two miles on Highway 301. As we approached the Gamble Plantation, we had a sinking feeling that it could be closed because of the storm and probably some damage. Sadly, such was the case!

We saw someone jogging up to us as we stood looking forlorn at the gate. She was the caretaker’s wife and shortly after the caretaker, Kevin Kaiser drove up and introduced himself. He said there was some damage and many of the trees were down, but they hoped to be open in a couple of weeks. He pointed out the damage on the Patten House and noted the down trees and bushes. He encouraged us to visit the Sugar Mill ruins about 1/2 mile away. We drove to the site and looked at the remains of some of the buildings where I’m sure so many poor souls suffered. We vowed to return next month!

This is what I do know about the Gamble Plantation which is worthy of a visit.

The Gamble Mansion was built shortly after the Second Seminole

War ended, opening the area for settlement. Robert Gamble, a major during the war, built a sugar plantation on the Little Manatee River, starting in 1844.

The original cistern, which collected water from the mansion roof, remains. All the labor was done by enslaved people, including digging 16 miles of canals, necessary to grow sugar. (One of those original canals runs along the park’s borders.)

Records show that in 1847, Gamble owned 69 enslaved people and by 1855 that number had increased to 151. No slave quarters remain. Gamble only lived there and operated the plantation for 12 years. Deeply in debt, Gamble was forced to sell it, including the then 185 enslaved people, in 1856 after sugar prices

sank.

The story that makes the Gamble Mansion famous, though, is its role in 1865 just after the Confederate collapse. The secretary of state for the Confederacy was Judah Philip Benjamin, an unusual and fascinating character also a plantation owner and a trusted confidante of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. After the war, there was a $40,000 reward for his capture. Traveling in disguise, he made his way south, staying at homes of Confederate supporters until he reached Gamble Mansion, then the home of Archibald McNeil, a famous blockade runner, where he took refuge for two weeks.

Passages

Carlisle Worthington Fiers Jr. Sept. 29, 1928 - Oct.

Landings Racquet Club member Carlisle Worthington Fiers Jr. passed peacefully October 19, 2022, at 94 years old while surrounded by his beloved family at his home in The Landings.

Voted “Most Popular” by his Senior Class, Carl was Class Vice-President and a 4-Letterman at Summit High School. Nicknamed “Inky” for his jet-black hair and cobalt blue eyes, his Senior Class tagline was “Sing away sorrows, cast away cares”, a philosophy that he continued throughout his life. He studied Economics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, enlisting in the Navy to pay his tuition. After graduation, he received his commission and served on the destroyers, Ingraham and Wren, in antisubmarine warfare, during the Korean War. He left with the rank of Lieutenant, JG after six years. As he often declared, joining the Navy was the second-best decision he ever made, next to marrying his wife of 50 years, Diane.

In 1965, Carl co-founded, developed, and established Lake Naomi and Timber Trails, vacation communities nestled in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The past 50 years found Carl and Diane selling and developing real estate in the Pocono summers and Sarasota winters. Some of Carl’s development projects in Florida included the very first condominium complex in Charlotte County, Admiralty Villas, and some of the earliest condominiums on Venice Island: Aldea Mar, Quarterdeck, Bahia Vista Club, Jetty Villas, and MacArthur Beach. In the early 1970s, Carl brokered the 25,000 acres in Englewood, now Rotonda and Cape Haze. Combining his passion for real estate with his love and devotion to family, he founded the family brokerage Worthington Property Group, Inc. in 2006 with Diane, and son, Carlisle Worthington Fiers

III (aka Worth) which continues to this day.

Carl loved golfing, fishing, boating, and playing piano for his family. His children and grandchildren would dance behind him as he improvised the boogie woogie greats and sentimental sing-alongs. But his favorite pastime was tennis.

Carl joined The LRC in 2018 where he played with other nonagenarians and worked out in the gym. He introduced the game to his daughter Jen, currently the Head Tennis Pro at The Landings, when she was 3 years old. He inspired her to eventually become a national champion with his neverending belief in her abilities and his coaching of strategy and mental toughness. Together, they competed almost every summer in Lake Naomi Tennis Club’s Open Mixed Doubles Championships. They earned the title many times throughout their father-daughter partnership. Tennis was their bond, his physical rehab, his social outlet, and his way of staying active and proving his youth no matter how old he was. Even on his very last day from his bed, with his grip as strong as ever, he hit his last tennis balls. In the end tennis was for Carl, proof of life and evidence that he never wanted to stop playing.

His passion for life and philosophies to live and let live to the fullest will surely be passed on to his five grandchildren and greatgranddaughter. Services will be at Toale Brothers Funeral Home (40 N. Orange Ave, Sarasota) on October 31, 2022, at 10:00 am. He will be buried with military honors by the United States Navy at the Sarasota National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Wounded Warriors or a veteran’s charity of your choice. Anyone who knew Carl, or his family are welcome to attend services. As Carl would say, “The more, the merrier!”

Canine Cornucopia? Help Your Pup Safely Enjoy the Holidays Going to the Dogs

It’s that time of year again. Fall is officially upon us and with it lots of opportunities for food and fun with the family. But it’s important to be sure your pup’s well-being doesn’t get lost during the festivities.

For one, traditional holiday foods generally aren’t healthy for dogs. Plus, with all your additional responsibilities and the (mostly) welcome chaos, properly caring for your pup might take a back seat during the season of celebration.

We’re here to ensure that doesn’t happen. Let’s take a look at steps you can take to help your pup enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season.

Unsafe Holiday Foods

When it comes to holiday traditions, emergency visits are an annual thing for many vets and pet hospitals. If you’re looking to avoid a panicked trip to the dog doc, take extra care to not allow your dog to consume anything that may make them sick. Here are a few watchouts.

• Beware of (some) bones – Yep, dogs dig a good bone. However, poultry bones can damage a dog’s digestive tract. Throw those turkey bones in the trash.

• Dial back the trimmings – Turkey skin, trimmings, and gravy are the best, aren’t they? Not for you pup. These rich holiday favorites can inflame your pup’s pancreas, potentially leading to life threatening pancreatitis.

• Don’t pass the sides – Stuffing, casseroles, mashed potatoes, and creamed peas are loaded with seasonings and fat that can also cause doggie digestion issues.

• Stash the sweets – Sugar is often a no-no for dogs, and anything containing Xylitol — like many baked goods — can be toxic.

Even if you don’t plan on willingly handing over these goodies, a helpful rule of thumb during the hectic holidays is to keep food out of your dog’s reach. If you’ve got an especially resourceful pup who works the dining room table in search of giving guests, you may want to add separation and extra security with the help of a gate or crate.

Yeah, it sounds like we’re being Debbie Downers. But don’t worry – on the flipside, there are plenty of tasty treats and holiday activities your dog can enjoy safely.

Healthy Holiday Foods — and Fun

As we mentioned, while there are many holiday favorites not fit for dogs, there are just as many you can happily share.

In general turkey, often the big spread’s main course, is OK for canines. But keep in mind that if the bird has been heavily seasoned or buttered, less is more. White meat or dark? That’s a matter of pup’s preference, of course.

Unlike most other sweet stuff, sweet potatoes are a safe treat and an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin

C, and beta-carotene. Though not as exciting, boiled or baked potatoes offer an excellent alternative.

There are a number of other holiday fruit and vegetable options dogs are welcome to put on their plate. With lots of plant fiber, manganese, and vitamins C and K, green beans (without butter or spices) are great; high in fiber and vitamins A and C, apples (without the core or seeds) also make a tempting treat; and canned pumpkin (without sugar or pie seasonings) is a favorite that provides plenty of health benefits.

Of course, if you don’t want to feed your pup “people food,” there perfectly safe commercial alternatives designed just for dogs — and ways to keep them busy amidst the madness.

Between football and settling down for dinner, why not mix in a brisk walk? It’ll do both your buddy and your belly wonders. Additionally, a new toy can also help keep your dog occupied and better deal with the stress of so much activity.

Once it’s time to dine, freezing or spreading something tasty on a lick mat is an inviting way to start a meal—and help pass the time. Next up, Remy’s Kitchen Just Turkey Hearts or Einstein’s Turkey Time treats made with real turkey are wonderful savory snacks. Main course options? Try Hound & Gatos Turkey Wet Entrée or Fromm Turkey & Pumpkin Pate. And if you need a side, Evanger’s Grain-Free Sweet Potato for Dogs & Cats has got you covered.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a holiday without dessert. Products like Boss Dog Pumpkin Yogurt, Einstein’s Pumpkin Pie Treats, or Sammy Snacks with Pumpkin can satisfy your dog’s sweet tooth.

Have a Happy, Healthy Holiday

From dog-friendly meals to dinner table treats, be sure to plan ahead for your pup. The right food and fun can help you, your family, and your dog make the most of the holidays.

My owners, Merle and Bob Gruesser, treat me like a queen -- and I love it. I am a very black, curly mini golden doodle. I have white on my chest, however.

I was born in a Florida town called Frostproof. So, I’m really Freddie of Frostproof.

I must confess a few things for which I am guilty: I steal socks. I fly airborne off the sofa when Bob chases me around the house trying to retrieve his socks. I love to tease him and be chased. Typical female.

I can bark a lot, especially when my humans are in the pool. I adore the pool and I have mastered the art of diving in. I think I am quite qualified for a dog Olympic team in my future.

Recently, we all drove to babysit grandchildren and, because I am such a good girl, I was more than welcome to come along. The grandkids adore me.

Hey, who wouldn’t?

You will see me on walks in The Landings with Merle and Bob. I’ll be the extremely good looking one with a stick in my mouth. Stop and say hello. I will let you know how to get a photo op in the Eagle.

Please call Karen Snyder, who is dying to feature your dog, at (941) 855-0347.

Landings Shopping Center Continues to Evolve

The rapid transformation and growth of the 150,000-squarefoot Landings Shopping Center continues. As 2022 comes to a close, nine new businesses will toast the new year at their new Landings locations. Plans are also in place to add trellises of blooming bougainvillea at entryways and a new outdoor green space.

In early January, the longawaited renovation of the 48,000-square-foot Publix store is expected to be completed, according to Lance Hood of J. Raymond Construction. Hood is the superintendent of the Publix Landings project. He reported that supply-chain issues and Hurricane Ian have contributed to the delay in completing the renovation. Reflecting the design of newer Publix stores, the new grocery will feature a pharmacy and a new Publix liquor store that will stand adjacent to the store. The parking area in front of the store is also being repaved and updated.

Last renovated in 2012, the Publix has served as the anchor store for the Landings Shopping Center since 2009.

During the past five years the shopping center has once again become a thriving, lifestyledriven destination that draws shoppers and diners. Plucked from bankruptcy in 2017 by Benderson Development, the shopping and dining mecca may be one of the strongest real estate retail success stories in Sarasota County.

The rebirth began three months after the developer took it over. Benderson initiated a series of structural renovations and improvements that included facade renovation, new lighting and landscaping. DaRuMa, the popular Japanese steak house, moved in along with Station 400, a breakfast and lunch spot joining original businesses that included Corkscrew Deli, Dollar Tree, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Landings Travel, Nuovo Salon, Optical Outlet, Realty Exec Solutions, Sally Beauty, and the Publix. Although COVID-19 led some tenants to shutter their stores, others took their place.

To date, since 2017 Benderson has added 23 new shops and restaurants. Of those 23, 15 are open and another eight will welcome customers in the coming months.

The new businesses that have joined the center this year include

1800 Barbershop, The Breakfast Company, Crumbl Cookies, Florence and the Spice Boys, Mantra Fitness, Origin Craft Beer & Pizza Café, Pacific Counter, StretchLab, and 3Natives Acai and Juicery.

As for the former home of the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant, Julie Fanning, Benderson Development’s director of marketing, reports “We have exciting redevelopment plans for the site, which we will share as soon as all the details are confirmed.”

The Origin Craft Beer & Pizza Cafe, known for its classic and specialty pies and baked wings, opened recently. Offering a large selection of craft beers, wings, salads and pizzas that include vegan, vegetarian and glutenfree options, this family- friendly place also has arcade games.

The Landings is Origin’s fourth Sarasota location.

Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Indoor and outdoor seating with petfriendly tables will be available as well as a communal “pappous” table. The word pappous is Greek for grandfather.

Other inviting food destinations that will open soon include: Crumbl Cookies: The fastest growing cookie company in the U.S., Crumbl offers more than 200 cookie flavors. The selection changes weekly.

This month, Florence and the Spice Boys will welcome diners at its new Landings restaurant. The November opening begins a new chapter for the once wildly popular Sarasota food truck. Diners will enjoy the signature modern Mediterranean and middle eastern flavors that drew so many followers. The decor will feature a comfortable, brightly decorated, fast-casual setting. Indoor and outdoor seating will overlook a new green-space that is being added to the property.

In December, The Breakfast Company, a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant and bakery, is scheduled to open next door to the new Publix. Dimitri Syros and his mother Terri are the owners of the well-known Bradenton eatery.

“We’ve been looking to expand into Sarasota for some time and The Landings provides a perfect, central location,” said Syros. Hours will be Tuesday through

Pacific Counter: Voted Tampa Bay’s best poke bowl restaurant, poke fans will enjoy this “coast-tocounter” eatery and dig into poke bowls, sushi burritos and more.

Natives Acai and Juicery: Healthy eating is on the menu at this Florida franchise featuring smoothies, wraps and acai bowls along with other tasty items. All items will be made in-house with locally sourced ingredients.

On the fitness front, two new locations will soon join EosFitness at The Landings:

Mantra Fitness: A boutique studio specializing in the Megaformer workout, Mantra’s 45- minute core, cardio and strength training for women and men, follows the Lagree method of Pilates.

StretchLab offers assisted stretch sessions designed to improve flexibility, enhance movement, reduce pain and improve quality of life.

And, at 1800 Barber, men can drop in for a modern haircut and shaves, all in a classic barbershop setting.

Some kayaks came off the racks due to the storm, but none sustained damage and were put back in place.

Attention

Our snowbirds are returning and the kayak racks will be full.

Fortunately, there was little damage from Hurricane Ian in October. Lots of debris and fallen trees covered the beginning of the Nature Trail. A few kayaks were blown off the rack but have all been put back.

The next group excursion will take place in December.

Look to the December Eagle, LRC Social Calendar, and the TeamReach app for more details.

LHA Meeting Notes

The Landings Homeowners Association held its regularly scheduled board meeting on October 14, 2022, at The Landings Racquet Club.

The board approved exterior painting on Pine Harrier Drive, Peregrine Point Circle N, and Peregrine Point Drive. It also approved roof replacement on Kestral Park Way N, Pine Harrier Circle, and Peregrine Point Drive. It approved tree removal (other than Ian caused damage) on Peregrine Point Circle E, Peregrine Point Way, and Pine Harrier Circle.

The LHA completed it’s tree trimming project prior to Ian; the purpose was to provide a 16’ clearance over the road to accommodate emergency vehicles

and Waste Management Trucks.

The board discussed reimbursing the LMA for a portion of the expense of recovering from hurricane Irma a final decision will be made at the November meeting. A draft budget for 2023 was also discussed, which, if the contribution to LMA is made, would require an increase in the 2023 Annual Assessment for the LHA for at least two years to restore its equity position.

The next regular meeting is at 5:00PM November 10, 2022, in the Poolside Room at the Landings Racquet Club. If an owner wishes to attend the meeting, advance notice is requested (via e-mail to whitman@cs.com) with the topic to be discussed.

Charitable Foundation Gearing Up For Season

Pizza party is Dec. 2

The Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation is gearing up for the most generous time of the year.

It is the time of year where Landings neighbors demonstrate their philanthropic nature and support the mission of the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation LHCF, which is to provide gifts for children during the holiday seasons affected by cancer, abuse or loss of a loved one regardless of race, religion or educational background.

Over the past eight years the Foundation has grown because of the generosity of Landings residents and those they share the story of the Foundation with:

A phone call to Henry Rhodes seven years ago requesting help for a few children that would not otherwise have Christmas, was the beginning of the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation (LHCF). With some help from friends, seven children enjoyed a Christmas that they wouldn’t have had any other way! This grass roots effort to help children with cancer has now grown into an IRS approved 501(c) (3) charity that supports four organizations with the focus on helping disadvantaged children who might otherwise fall through the cracks.... which is particularly unfortunate during the Holidays.

Because LHCF supports organizations that either aren’t well funded, small but large in impact or provide care/support that is otherwise limited to families and their children, the donations we provide change lives. That makes us unique when it comes to charitable giving, you can know the child you are supporting. Our donations range from $10-$5,000 from an individual giver; in this world- no donation is too small or TOO BIG.

The impact of IAN to most of the organizations has changed what gift giving will look like this year- most families have lost everything, homes and cars damaged by flooding, clothing and toys ruined. Hannah’s House (a home for abused women and their children) suffered extensive damage to the group home due to flooding. Three of the organizations are still struggling to locate families without cell service or internet. Don’t be surprised if the wish list includes gift cards for gas, food etc.- it’s hard to get a child to treatment if you don’t have money for gas.

Valentina Valetini, our resident chef is hosting, along with Judy & Jeff Smith, a pizza party to benefit LHCF. As supporters of the organization, they are sharing their talents to help raise awareness and funds! The party is being held December 2nd from 6-8 PM, it is limited to 50 people so sign up quickly!! In addition to the delicious homemade pizza and a glass of wine there will be a raffle of donated wine from some of the Landings finest wine connoisseurs. Look for details at the LRC and in the Eagle! How can you help?

• Adopt a child and purchase

gifts from their Wish List

• Donate funds- we have volunteer shoppers who will purchase gifts for the wish lists,

• Volunteer- bring your talent to the organization, be a shopper, line Landings Blvd for the drive thru party on 12/11 for Children’s Cancer Center.

Day Tripping

With McNeil’s help, he stowed away on a boat to Bimini. After stops in Nassau, Havana, and St. Thomas, he sailed to London, where he was an immediate success as a barrister.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy in the Sarasota region, who saved the house, are the Judah P. Benjamin chapter and the park is designated the Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial.

The mansion has survived wars, hurricanes, and tropical humidity, but just barely. After being used to store fertilizer, it sat vacant in the 1920s, decaying away. The United Daughters of the Confederacy came to its rescue, purchasing the property and deeding it to the state.

Today, the house sits at the center of a park filled with towering live oaks cloaked

from p.

in Spanish moss, near the 1895 Patten House, a pioneer farmhouse also preserved.

The museum today is furnished with period items, though none are original to the house. A knowledgeable guide takes visitors through the rooms, pointing out such items as a 19th Century piano, the painted floor cloth and a tea caddy that could be locked after use to protect its valuable contents.

Today, the Florida Park Service keeps the focus on the history of the property and the people who lived there.

In the museum, on display is a Census Bureau document listing the enslaved people on the plantation by name. It is referenced during the tour with a solemn pledge from the ranger guide: “We know their names and we honor every one of them.”

One of the special aspects of fishing at the gazebo at the end of the Nature Trail is the variety and size of fish caught right here in The Landings.

While the most common fish are those pictured below (sheepshead, mangrove snapper, jack crevalle, and catfish, there are over 30 different species which have been caught right from the gazebo. Also pictured is a stingray. Can you identify each of the other species pictured?

If you have an interest in learning how to fish at the gazebo or have company or children who want to experience a wonderful outdoor activity, contact the Fish Whisperer at nfpconsultingresources@gmail.com.

A THANKSGIVING CRANBERRY TREAT

Betty Greenspan’s Fresh Cranberry Sauce with Strawberries

INGREDIENTS:

. 1 bag fresh cranberries, rinsed and drained

. 1/2 cup maple syrup

. 1/2 cup frozen strawberries cut in chunks

. 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

. 2 small tangerines or 1 orange diced.

. 1 squeeze of lemon.

DIRECTIONS:

Place rinsed cranberries in a large, covered microwave bowl or medium size covered saucepan (the cranberries tend to boil up when cooked)

Add 1/2 teaspoon almond extract and maple syrup and mix well Cook with covered top on medium heat for about 10 minutes, stir once or twice, making sure the mixture does not boil over and until the berries pop open

Removed from microwave or stove and mix in the frozen strawberries

When cool add the diced orange or tangerines and squeeze of lemon

Refrigerate until cold or serve warm, if desired

Lasts for one week in the refrigerator

Betty’s tip:

Enjoy as a side dish or use in sandwiches, it’s quite yummy and not too sweet. I try not to use refined sugar in my recipes and found that I could use far less maple syrup than sugar with a better flavor.

A special shout out to the Kitchen Ladies of the Father/Son Tournament

Please send in the recipe of the dish you bring to the luncheon (or just your favorite recipe) and photo for The Landings Eagle. We will print it in next year’s issues. Call or email Dee Ricapito at 841-357-6261 or deericapito3@gmail.com.
