Landings resident Guillermo Vidal: an immigrant’s story
Guillermo Vidal fled Cuba as a boy. Born in 1951, he was to rise through the ranks of the Colorado Department of Transportation and become executive director and part of Governor Roy Romer’s cabinet. Following his stint with the state, he took a job with the city of Denver as manager of public works and deputy mayor, ultimately becoming the 44th Mayor of Denver in 2011 after then mayor John Hickenlooper was elected governor of Colorado. Following that stellar achievement, he became President and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Metro Denver. The story of his early life is a remarkable one. Born in Camaguey, Cuba, to Roberto and Marta Vidal, he and his brothers were sent by themselves to the United States in 1961 via Operation Peter Pan. They ended up at the Sacred Heart Orphanage in Pueblo, Colorado, and were not reunited with their parents until four long years later. Young Guillermo had the fortitude to overcome this difficult beginning, going on to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado. He then became a registered professional engineer, garnering 37 years of experience in the public sector of state and city government. He is the author of two books. The first was Boxing for Cuba-An Immigrant’s story, in which he details the difficulties of his family’s immigration story that began in Cuba. He came from an affluent, upper middle-class Cuban family with servants who catered to their every need. His two brothers were fraternal twins and a year and a half older than Guillermo, and he looked up to them.
By Diana Colson
His father was a successful businessman, while their mother was both gorgeous and gregarious. Their marriage was extremely volatile, often making he and his brothers the casualties of their marital war. His father seemed cold and emotionally aloof, appearing to resent his youngest son. No matter how hard he tried, Guillermo could not gain his father’s approval, even later as a high-achieving adult. His mother was emotionally unbalanced, prone to bouts of rage that culminated in the physical abuse of her three sons. Guillermo spent his childhood walking on eggshells to avoid his parent’s ire. Then came Castro’s Revolution and the boys’ subsequent exile. The parents made the unthinkable decision of sending their three boys to the US seeking political asylum. Family members were supposed to meet them at the Miami airport, but they did not. In a strange land, Guillermo and his brothers felt utterly deserted and abandoned! An American based refugee program called Operation Peter Pan took over. It had placed 14,000 Cuban refugees in orphanages and foster homes around the country. Guillermo and his brothers were sent to a Catholic Orphanage in Pueblo, Colorado, relieved at least to be together! Although they were fed and clothed, the orphanage was an austere place run like a prison. Within its confines emerged a culture of violence. It was a terrible experience, much like Lord of the Flies! LMA meeting notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky, opened the meeting by announcing more than 100 attended the final Landings Learning Group event. The group was entertained by a talented pianist. Several artists and their work are now featured on The Landings website. A new financial blog and a blog about manatees by a seven-year-old has been added to the web site as well. The Safety and Security Committee held an orientation meeting for all those involved in the speed enforcement review committee. The review panel did meet to review the recommended decal suspension by the board for two residents. The panel decided to suspend the decal of one of the two residents. Olshansky and Michael Knupp attended a Board Certification meeting and as part of full disclosure, he announced the acceptance of a cloth Argus bag as a gift. An audit of 2018 finances is in progress. The same community events that were held last year, will be held again this year. Those include the coastal cleanup, the July 4 pizza pool party, and the Halloween event. The Landings kayak project is moving forward. A plan will be provided to the Landings Racquet Club for approval. Storage racks for the kayaks has been designed and construction will be done by a volunteer. The rack will be located between the bridge and the gazebo. Siton-top Kayaks will be purchased and made available to residents and their guests at a low rental cost. A special cart will be available to transport the kayaks from the rack to the Gazebo. FINANCE REPORT Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported two notable over budget expenditures for Drainage and Lakes will be reviewed for reclassification to their respective reserve accounts. He noted it is too early in the year for an end of year forecast.
By Trebor Britt
“There are probably 10 more unpaid assessments than there were last year,” Bayles said. Most of these are going to be forwarded to the LMA attorney for collection. Benderson has cleared up all their receivables. MANAGERS REPORT Landing’s Manager, George Neil reported paying the usual monthly bills for the Association. He also received bids for curb painting and along with Elena, discussed lighting issues with FPL. Neil received bids to fill pot holes with a more permanent patch for the Roads Committee Chairman. An unnamed woman resident was found deceased by police after an employer reported her missing. A copy of the 2017 audit was provided to all members of the board. AESTHETICS Committee chair, Elena Darden reported FPL would not be replacing poles, but just the light fixtures. After canvassing The Landings property the committee noted three or four areas that needed brighter LED lighting. A motion was made to except the FPL lighting contract. The motion passed unanimously. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Chairman, Joan Koplin reported on a meeting with four other top selling realtors who list properties in The Landings. These represent the top three companies who list properties in The Landings. They discussed ways to improve Landings exposure to Sarasota realtors. They are going to contact the Sarasota Herald Tribune hoping they will do a long overdue profile on The Landings community to appear in a fall issue. The benefit of a link that would show active and pending properties,
as well as properties available to rent in The Landings was also discussed. All present believe the link would be a great benefit and service to community residents. Fifty realtors have had sales or listings in The Landings in the last six months. They hope the board would consider a group of 10 realtors paying for the link for one year to measure its value. Comments from potential buyers were also brought forth. Some of the discussion included, pickle ball, a dog park, and Kayak launching. Making the main Gate friendlier to Sunday open houses was another issue discussed. MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky appointed, Ron Pierce as the new Chairman of The Maintenance Committee. LAKES Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported electrical issues with fountains and lights should be corrected soon. A contractor was selected to work on the erosion problem on Bay View (Lake 6) after a window washing lift nearly tumbled into the lake. A grant proposal was submitted to the county for a Sarasota Estuary pilot program of non-chemical algae control. A decision on the grant will be made in early May. Lastly, Sarasota County has been working on the inlet to Lake 1 near the north gate. LANDOLIERS The Landoliers choral group would like to continue its program with a new director beginning in October. The 20-30 voice group expects to have 20 rehearsals and two performances. Funding for the group comes out of the Community Events budget. The director candidate is an experienced choral director, musician and has sung professionally. There was no
objection by members of the board to the suggested plan. ROADS A Landings resident requested information regarding road resurfacing. Roads Committee Co-Chair, Dick Bayles, announced the next road resurfaced would be Peregrine Point Drive. An important drainage issue will also be addressed at that time. He offered to provide the resident a copy of the resurfacing schedule. LANDSCAPING Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner reported an expense of $4290.61 to renovate islands 1, 10 and 40. THE LANDINGS EAGLE May 2019
President’s Column Another busy month in The Landings and at LMA. • You may have noticed that a good number of trees have been removed along our roadways and in the Eagles Nest area. This is part of a larger and longer effort to remove invasive plants. From an environmental standpoint, our community and our terrific landscaping will be healthier and better off in the long run as a result of the removal of invasive plants. Thanks go to our landscaping chair, Paul Weiner for heading up this project. • There are lots of new additions to the LMA website, including more residents highlighted on our Artists Corner Page, new blog postings, additional classifieds and special events posted in the calendar. If you have not already signed onto the resident portion of the site, we encourage you to do so at: www. thelandingsofsarasota.com. If you are going to be away this summer, you can also access The Landings Eagle current and past issues on the LMA website. Feel free to submit items you want to post at insidethelandings@

gmail.com • Attention snowbirds: As you prepare to go back to your homes for the summer, please keep in mind the following: 1. Make sure your emergency contact information is provided to LMA. In the event of a major storm or problems within The Landings, we want to be able to be in contact with you. 2. Please put items from your porch, patios, decks or lanais in areas where high winds will not cause them to go airborne and damage to your or other’s property. 3. Have a great summer and know that we will be looking forward to your return. • I am pleased to report that Ron Pierce has agreed to become the new chair of the LMA Maintenance Committee. • Our environmental committee has held several activities and is adding people to the committee. Contact Maralyn Kaufman if interested. A bird watching group is now being formed and a grant proposal has been submitted to assist
in our work on making our lakes more environmentally friendly. • As you may know, The Landings has had a choral group for over 20 years led by Lenore Jost, who retired this past season. We have identified a new leader/director for the Landoliers who will begin in the
fall. If you would like to learn more about the Landoliers, or know of anyone who would like to join our fun “singing” group, please contact me at the email address below • The monthly happy hours have been a great success thanks to Paige Packman and her committee and the Landings Free College ended its season with a standing room only crowd to hear pianist Lana Reign. She is a Landings resident who talked about the Armenian Holocaust and performed a variety of classical, jazz and popular music. • Many people have asked me how it is going as president of LMA and I’m happy to report that it is going well, thanks to the great team of fellow board members and committees. Your community is in good hands and we encourage your input and participation. LMA Board meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the LRC (racquet club). Landings Free College season finale This year, every Thursday afternoon for the past 13 weeks, The Landings Free College held wonderfully informative presentations featuring such notables as the CEO of Selby Gardens, or the CEO of Sarasota Memorial to a highlight of Historical Spanish Point, then a parade of our many residents sharing their expertise on a variety of topics. This year the season ended with a bang! Lana Reign, a very talented Landings resident, played piano, classical music of her former homeland, Armenia. Her music was so heartfelt, it brought tears to many eyes as she discussed the Armenian Holocaust. Then she ended her performance with songs from America’s popular composers. The audience of 110 people were spellbound and gave her a standing ovation. The event was followed by an outstanding reception with refreshments by Judy and Tara. Delicious appetizers were provided by LMA and Publix Food Store. The Asst. Manager, Ryan Scholtterback, gave us an informative rundown of some of the new items he brought from the deli and bakery, as well as an interesting update to the progress being made in the shopping center. Fun was had by all. Our Landings Family would like to thank RALPH RICAPITO, and IRV KUSHNER for making it happen!

Congratulations Captain Augie Did you know that we have a new captain at the front gate? His name is Agustino Cafarelli, but you probably know him better as Augie. He has been a member of the Security staff here for eleven years, always courteous, friendly, and helpful to residents as well as the steady stream of visitors, contractors and service people who come to The Landings daily. The last of nine children, Augie was born in Upstate New York and returned to the province of Benevento, near Naples, in Italy before he was a year old. He returned to Brooklyn at the age of eight. When he was 15, his parents moved back to Italy permanently and Augie decided to stay in Brooklyn with family members. A Vietnam veteran, he joined the service after high school as an army ranger in the 101st Airborne
By Dorothy Spelman
Division. Augie has been a resident of Florida for about 40 years, leaving the city for the sunshine. Augie received an associate degree in business at Manatee VoTech and worked in the hotel business for 25 years. He worked as resident manager at a motel and later served as overnight manager on duty at the Ritz Carlton, where he was a hotel detective and led its loss prevention services. He has a daughter, 22, who recently graduated from Columbia Journalism School and a son, a business consultant, who graduated from Penn State, as well as a 4-year-old grandson, all in New York City. So, stop by the gate sometime and congratulate our new captain. Those who know Italian can wish him “Auguri”!

Anita Kincade - Volunteer Emeritus at Mote Anita Kincade has been named Volunteer Emeritus for Mote Marine Lab after 27 years volunteering for the Sea turtle Program. She was recognized in 2005 for 15 years, in 2010 for 20 years, and in 2015 for 25 years of dedicated volunteer service. On each occasion, she was presented with a gorgeous crystal award, treasures she keeps in her home to remind her of remarkable experiences. Originally from Western NY State, Anita and her late husband moved to The Landings in 1990 where she connected immediately with Mote, a much smaller organization at the time. The Sea Turtle mating season extends from May 1st to November 1st, and volunteers sign up to work at least one morning a week. Volunteers are thoroughly trained before they start and are retrained once a year after that. After training, Anita would get up before dawn one morning a week and be at the beach at first light when one can see tracks and nests of the turtles and observe any other turtle activity. Volunteers were tracking primarily loggerheads, but there were also greens and an occasional Kemp’s Ridley. When female sea turtles are ready to lay eggs, they usually return to the same beach where they were born–the only time they ever return to land. These enormous creatures lumber ashore during the night, laying approximately 1 to 8 nests per season, each nest holding approximately 100 eggs. Some percentage of crawls are “false crawls”, where turtles wander back and forth, but nothing happens. Volunteers are trained to recognize these “false crawls” as they must also be reported. Mote’s Sea Turtle program extends over 25-30 miles of beach, from Casperson Beach all the way to Longboat. Each volunteer is given a specific zone of beach to walk, and each zone is about ½ mile in length. Anita served as a “non-permitted” volunteer, which means she was assigned to call Mote no later than 7:30 in the morning to report any activity on the beach. No beach will be raked until after calls are received and nests have been marked and staked. During her recorded call, Anita gave the exact location of the nest. To do this, she reported the address of nearby buildings taken from photographs shot from the beach. Following these 7:30 a.m. phone reports, sites must be located, verified, and staked by permitted professionals from Mote. In their search for sand that is soft enough to dig their pits, sea turtles sometimes go through the sea oats, under picnic tables or under benches. When suitable sand is found, they dig down about a foot before laying their eggs. Afterwards, they cover eggs up with their flippers, and pat the nest down to camouflage it. At the edge of the water, volunteers look for signs of a crawl. Flipper marks vary with the turtle. If there is no sign of a tail drag, it is probably a loggerhead. If a tail drag is sited, it probably was a green. It is interesting to learn that that the sex of the baby turtle emerging from the egg has been determined by temperature of the sand. (Sands on Siesta are cooler than most beaches because of the high degree

of crystal.) Anita says, “For many years these sea turtles were gravely threatened. But for the last several years, their numbers are much better. Protection seems to be working!” Once the first nests are laid, volunteers watch for hatchings, new crawls, new nests, and false crawls. They also check older nests. After a storm, a nest might be washed-over or even washed-out, meaning the nest is completely gone. 12 to 48 hours before each nest is to open, it drops about 8”. That telltale drop Anita Kincade is reported to Mote. According to Anita, “Each stake has a nest ID, which has a ton of information on it. The date, the address, the name of the permitted person who has verified the nest, the zone number, etc. There is also a record of whether an animal has damaged the nest, and whether the nest has dropped. If it hasn’t hatched 4 days after a drop, a professional goes out to check the nest.” Average incubation time is 50 days, although 41-82 days have been recorded. When hatching takes place, disorientation can happen. Babies go the wrong way, towards homes and sea oats instead of the water. Says Anita, “After hatching, you follow the little tracks. You start looking. If you find one that’s lost, you put the turtle in a bucket with wet sand, place a towel over it and take it to Mote or send for someone to retrieve it. The babies must make it on their own. If disorientated, they might be exhausted, or might have been before going out. If it is only raining, they go out attacked by fire ants. Mote will release them when anyway. Should a volunteer be ill or out of town, they they are well.” find their own replacement, drawing from a list of Only about 1 in a thousand hatchlings make it. At substitutes. Some regulars are available to substitute 100 eggs per nest, that means only one out of every on alternate days. 10 nests survives. Anita Kincade loves the organization! “I can’t say Volunteers carry with them their cell phone, flags, enough good things about Mote Marine Lab and a bucket for wayward babies, pen, notebook, address director Michael Cosby. They are all very young in sheets with photographs of buildings, and brochures spirit. Everybody is excited. Mote is good to their for inquisitive beach walkers. Says Anita, “We wear volunteers, and their volunteers reflect that. There is a our official volunteer t-shirts. People are amazingly lot of caring for marine life and for the environment. interested and protective of nests and want to know Soon the City Island compound will become an this and that and more. We always spend time with international research facility and the aquarium will them talking and explaining. We carry information be reborn on the mainland.” cards to give them. Seafood lovers, it’s good and fresh Yelp review: I see why this place is all five stars. Amazing find, tucked away in a nondescript strip mall adds to its local, simple vibe. Best seafood I have had in a long time. Service made it feel like we were part of the family, four happy diners tonight. If you read this post, stop searching and start eating. Seriously do not pass up this little gem. Living in Florida, you expect to find fresh seafood no matter where you dine. If you are a local seafood lover, you probably have a mental list of goto restaurants which serve the freshest seafood. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill needs to be added to it. Fresh Catch’s, father/son duo, Bob and Devon Provost have a serious passion for seafood which started way back when the family lived in the Boston area. Their simply prepared, never-fried, neverfrozen dishes are paired with a variety of simple sauces that serve to complement, so the freshness of the seafood shines. Your fish/seafood selection goes from the case onto the grill. Prepared grilled or blackened, topped with lemon and butter, Pico de Gallo or tropical salsa. Served with a fresh ear of corn on the cob and baby roasted potatoes. Soups, salads, sandwiches and steam pots round
out the menu. If room permits, be sure to order a slice of their homemade key lime pie. Bob’s wife, Debra, makes the key lime pie, using freshly whipped cream. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of beers and wines. Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill, located at 7119 S. Tamiami Trail, just south of Stickney Point Road in the Buccaneer Plaza, is a casual restaurant/ market with indoor and outdoor seating for close to 30. Here’s what more patrons are saying about the restaurant on line: Tried this place last night on a whim and it did not disappoint! Everything from the staff, to the menu, to the meal itself was perfection. It’s a small place and luckily we’d come in between dinner rushes and got a table right away. Within 10 mins the place was full again. The wait staff was smiling and helpful. We shared stone crab soup to start with a couple of ice cold beers, tons of crab in the soup and excellent flavor. For our meals we got blackened tripletail and snow crab claws. Each came with a side of roasted potatoes. I can’t say enough about how fresh and delicious the entire meal was. We will be back!
WOW! WOW! WOW! This place is a hidden gem! Fish was fresh today and you could taste the difference. Very clean kitchen. They cooked the fish to perfection and the presentation was 5 stars like you would expect at a fancy resort; those extra added steps. This place is the real deal. Only thing that made me upset was that I never knew it was here before. Sooooood GOOD! This is must try! I was so glad to find this cute restaurant and fish market. To get a high-quality fish you need a fish market and this fits the bill. I wanted a takeout fish plate and I got the blackened pompano with potatoes and corn. I made a salad at home and had a beautiful meal. The corn was not overlooked. It also has a big counter so the next time I will order some oysters and try another dish. It’s much bigger than I thought. I am going to become a regular. See more reviews online at Yelp and Trip Advisor. Special orders and reservations accepted. Fresh Catch Fish Market and Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. 941-413-7133, freshcatchfishmarketandgrill.com (Advertorial)

Staying safe on our roads
By Bill Whitman
As many of you may be aware our Landings roadways are unique with winding streets and almost no sidewalks. Many of us walk, bike or jog, and many choose to exercise in the early a.m. or evening. At times it becomes difficult for vehicle operators to see our residents and their well-being / safety becomes an issue.
Two things we can do to address this situation: • Walk or run facing traffic • Wear a reflective vest as it can be seen by drivers from a distance. These vests are on sale at the Landings Racquet Club for a very reasonable price.
Van Gogh paid a special visit to my neighbor Bentley this April. What a blessing for us all! Watching a sunflower follow the sun is worth a day in our lives. Submitted by Katy Leidel

TACOS – TO GO: Doggone Good Food Well if Rusty the golden retriever had his way, he and his handsome black lab bud Bigly would cruise on over to the Tacos-To Go drive through window every day of the week. Can you blame them? Rusty prefers the Latin Wok Stir Fry (no chop sticks for him) while Bigly’s favorite is the Carne Asada Burrito bowl with coconut rice and beans (hold the pico de gallo please…).
Speaking of Burrito bowls, many like theirs “Keto-style” which seems to be a really popular choice these days.

Make It A... HAPPY MILESTONE BIRTHDAY! By Dee Ricapito
Age is something I never thought about ever, till the years started flying by! My grandson just turned thirteen -- he is finally a proud teenager and felt as though he hit a milestone. This thought got me thumbing through those birthday milestone years. • At Age “16” Can’t wait to get a drivers license and a little more freedom. • At Age “18” Can volunteer for the service. Some can vote. Still time is slowly passing toward the milestone year. • At Age “21” Felt like an adult, even though living at home with parents. It was fun carting an age card proudly, I could vote, And could be served in a night club. Maybe then began to think about more worldly matters. • At Age “30” as the years unfold peoples’ criticisms fall by the wayside, taking things less seriously, prioritizing what’s important. As an adult thinking, “This is who I am, and I like it.” • At Age “40” Oh! I think I’m getting older. Having a growing family, running a household, raising children, working outside the home, and never even slowing down. Even though athletes retire by now --I’m on a roll, frantically busy and loosening up on perfection. • Hitting Age “50” 0h! Not another birthday (so soon). I looked at friendship much better finding like-minded souls. And, not letting others “SHOULD” on me. (People saying: “you SHOULD do this...or that)! Rather finding people who are funny and kind.
• At Age “60” Looking forward to retirement at age 62 or 65. Finding it fine realizing how meaningful and joyful life could be. There may be life changing/challenging events good or bad (divorce or losing a loved one). But, you can be grateful for establishing rituals, coffee with friends, enjoying museums, volunteering, keeping physically fit, embracing change, enjoying family and children, grandchildren. • At Age “70” Feels old just writing that number down starting with a “7”. (Yet “7” has always been a lucky number). It’s time to be enjoying the little things such as: simple moments walking outdoors; getting a dog; adult education; vacationing; making sure our technology is helping us feel better--rather than worse! Embracing the happy times with friends and those you love, are the best parts of life and what matters. It’s an accumulation of millions of moments -- its aging! Our brains change, so do our values maybe a sense of giving back. It’s good that we are living longer. We have more years of being productive, enjoying happy days and creativity, business smarts, travel and perusing a healthy lifestyle.

• At Age “80” Aging doesn’t come with a how-to-text-book. Some get disillusioned or confused at any age. Happiness is not the absence of problems but the ability to deal with them. Having balance over the years is a good achievement.
And, our breakfast menu is available all day, every day!
• By the 90’s I would expect going from external validation to internal fulfillment is a precious thing... that is yet to come!

Named one of the best burgers in Sarasota, this mile-high burger may not officially be on the menu at Alpine Steakhouse but if you ask for the Steakhouse burger, you will not be denied. So what sets this tower of perfection apart from other burgers? It starts with a freshly ground in-house, ½ lb. sirloin patty that promises to always be fresh and juicy and cooked exactly to your preference. This succulent foundation is then topped with Swiss cheese, thick strips of smoked jowl bacon for a burst of smokiness, golden fried onion rings, slices of tomato, lettuce, and a dollop of mayo all sandwiched between a freshly toasted Kaiser bun. As if this belly buster needs anything more, a side is included in the price. All sides are homemade. Oh sure, you can get the traditional side of French fries, but why would you when their selection offers so much more? And did I mention, all their sides are homemade? Displayed in their deli-case are side selections
such as potato salad (German or American), heart healthy coleslaw, macaroni salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, cucumber salad, just to name a few. Come and get it at Alpine Steakhouse Meats & Deli, located at 4520 S. Tamiami Trail. www.alpinesteak.com 941-922-3797. (Advertorial)

Racquet Club News |Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner Another season has come to a close. They seem to go by faster each year. For our members that have already left and those that are about to leave, have a great summer at your home up north. We will keep an eye on everything down here until you return to Sarasota later in the year. Beginning May 1st, the Guest Fee enters its new summertime rate. Guests of members using the pool, fitness center or tennis courts will be charged a $10 fee per person, when using the club before noon and $5 after noon. This rate will continue until November 1st when the fee will remain $10 throughout the day until May 1st. Guests residing under a member’s roof (in-house guests) will not be charged a fee if the member has registered their guests in advance with the Tennis Pro Shop. Also, on May 1st our “Peak Time” policy comes to its seasonal end. Now reservations can be made two days in advance for prime-time courts (8:00 a.m. to noon) as long as there

aren’t more guests on the court than members. Please call me if you have any questions about our court reservation or guest policies. As we have done for many years now, the Landings Racquet Club will offer a summer membership to those living in The Landings who aren’t already members. For a one-time $400 fee, during the months of June through September, your family will have full privileges throughout the facility. You will have access to the tennis courts, fitness center, our wonderful pool that is cooled to 84 degrees, use of the well-stocked lending library as well as member rates on tennis lessons with our USPTA Certified Tennis Professional, Adrian Moghina. Be sure to mark your calendars for our Annual Memorial Day BBQ on Monday, May 27th. This is normally our largest event of the year. We typically have around 140 people including roughly 30 veterans. It will be the normal menu of hot dogs and hamburgers with all the side dishes. As usual, military veterans, the guests of honor, will be complimentary. Please register in the Pro Shop for the event. The sign-up sheet is on the counter.

There was an article about 10 years ago about how many different forehands that Roger Federer possesses. The article said that he can hit at least 36 different forehands depending on what he is trying to do with the ball. The forehands are different depending on such things as the stance that he is using to swing off of, his hitting arm position at contact and his follow through, to name a few. I believe that even though his forehand is his weapon, it is also why sometimes it lets him down in big matches. When you have too many options you might not make the right choice under pressure. Luckily for you at the club level, a few dozen different forehands are not necessary for you to succeed on a regular basis. You definitely need to be good at hitting off of the neutral stance and the semi-open stance on your forehand side. On the backhand side, if you have a one handed backhand, you need to be able to hit off of the neutral stance and the closed stance (this includes slice backhands). For two handed backhands, the neutral stance is ideal. The neutral stance is the same stance that golfers and baseball players use when they position themselves to hit the ball. I believe you need to keep it simple and make sure you are really good at hitting off of your neutral stance on your forehand and backhand sides. It is the easiest way to rotate the body correctly and most natural way to get your energy to go across the net. As for arm position and follow through; your arm should always be in front of your body at contact (on all your shots) and use the follow through that finishes over your shoulder. If you keep it simple, you can become a solid club player. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! And as always I’m available for lessons. See you on the courts!
Thank you to our wonderful chefs that made the last pancake breakfast so enjoyable. Dawn & Nelson Smith manned the griddles while Angie Eason added her special “Hawaiian” topping. It must’ve been very good as it ran out quickly! It is always a crazy busy morning when we serve pancakes and these three made it run like a well-oiled machine.

RUM CAKES RULE!
By Diana Colson
Tanja Hofmann of A Taste of Germany Cafe and Bakery has created an incredible recipe for Rum Cakes as well as other liquor cakes. Her creations are such a smashing success that the Hofmann’s will soon be closing their cafe on Siesta Key and moving to a new facility. At this new location, they will not only set up a storefront, they will also operate a factory employing several people who will do nothing but bake, pack and ship their 65 varieties of liquor cakes, including several recipes using our famed Siesta Key Rum! Now, THIS is big! How did it come into being? Well, Tanja envisioned creating something unique. She started experimenting with recipes based on the various flavors of rum put out by Siesta Key Distillery, labeled “Dangerously drinkable,” by Cooking Light Magazine. Tanja started experimenting with Toasted Coconut Rum, and her family and friends really loved the result. She refined her recipe and she took a sampling over to SK Rum to try. A dozen or so people were already bringing in rum-cakes, but Tanja’s proved to be the best of the best! Furthermore-having run a bakeryshe knew how to produce volume on a regular basis. Siesta Key Rum was soon marketing her cakes. Pretty soon these delicious treats also appeared at Crescent Market, Siesta Key Spirits, Old Salty Dog, Geckos, Anna Maria Oyster Bar, and dozens of other outlets and restaurants. Tanja expanded her vision. She developed a range of 65+ liquor cakes featuring whiskey and
TURTLE’S
bourbon as well as rum. These cakes soon became a featured attraction at tailgate parties. Musicians like Big Machine, John Ridge, and Bruno Mars became interested in having their own brands available at concerts. Booze cakes took off! This is a family business. Tanja’s husband, Manuel Hofmann, and her son, Robin Hofmann, are all very much involved. They worked together on A Taste of Germany Cafe and Bakery, currently located at 6575 Midnight Pass Rd, Siesta Key until their move, and now will be marketing cakes and shipping them worldwide. Some favorite cake-flavors are: Siesta Key Coconut Rum; Selvarey Cacao Rum with Chocolate (owned by the singer, Bruno Mars); Brandy Oreo Cookie; Old Camp Peach Pecan Whiskey with Pecans (owned by the country band, Florida Georgia Line); and Lemon Vodka. All are currently available today at A Taste of Germany Café and Bakery. The Hofmann’s regularly display their delicious bakery at events such as: The Ft. Lauderdale Medieval Fair; The Renaissance Festival in Deerfield each; the Brevard Renaissance Fair in Melbourne; The Seafood & Music Festival in Ft. Meyers; and The Sarasota New Year’s Eve Pineapple Drop, to name but a few. They also create cakes for special events such as weddings. The family has come to realize they need to leave their Siesta Key café behind and pay attention to this burgeoning cake empire. Continued on the next page

Landings resident Guillermo Vidal It took four years before the parents could finally reunite with their sons. By then, their stormy marriage had deteriorated to mutual hatred and cruelty. No escape was visible until the boys came of age and could move out. Guillermo was emotionally scarred by his experiences. As an adult, he worked hard to get people to like him, causing him to cling stubbornly to everyone in his life, even those people who harmed him. He strove obsessively to get people to accept him, always trying to the be best; best at sports, best at school, best at every new project he took on during his career. His achievements were multitudinous with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), yet they were unfulfilling. This realization ushered in him a deep, debilitating depression. It was his counselors that saved him. In his own words: “They helped me discover that contentment and fulfillment came not from the accumulating of worldly titles or awards: it came from working with others to create something greater than myself.” Vidal stayed on with CDOT and would reach a pinnacle of his career when he became the head of the

department under the governor. But his father refused to acknowledge his accomplishment, accusing him of being incapable of achieving such a coveted position without foul play. He then disclaimed Guillermo as his son. For Guillermo it was an epiphany. “How freeing it was to know Í could do nothing to please my father, so I no longer needed to try. It left me free to

live the rest of my life without having to seek his love and approval.” Vidal has been married twice, each relationships lasting 20-years. Although there were many good years, both relationships came to an end. The scaffolding of career, home and family collapsed simultaneously after his second divorce, and Guillermo found himself devastated. After much
reflection, he developed a daily spiritual practice, practiced meditation, and found his connection with the Higher Source that exists in all living things. His experiences motivated him to write his second book: Catch and Release-One Man’s Improbable Search for True Love and the Meaning of Life, as a way to help others successfully cope with difficult life transitions. He also writes a blog on life lessons that is published twice a week on several publications. You can sign up for them by going to his website: www.guillermovidal.me. “It is strange that I had to reach my sixties to unearth my authenticity, but I have learned that our spiritual progression follows no calendar or clock. From the connection I now have with my truest self, I apply my writing, speaking and teaching to help others find their true source. “Our stories can delineate for us the greatest purpose of our lives. Take time today to share your story with others.” Both books make fascinating reads! They are available on Amazon and Kindle. An arborist identified invasive
trees in the Eagles Nest area, behind the Cloisters and along Landings Boulevard. These invasive plantings will be removed soon. The committee is also trying to determine who is responsible for covering the utility boxes on North Kestral Parkway. DRAINAGE Committee chair, Michael Knupp reported a damaged drainage grate was replaced on Peregrine Point Way. Another in that location will be repaired or replaced soon. A failed joint in a 48” drainage line is causing a washout near Flicker Field Circle. They hope it can be corrected before the summer rains. A constant flow of water in the pipe from Lake 3 (Carriage Lake) will complicate the repair. Bids are being sought for this repair. Sarasota County repaired the sink hole on the head wall of Lake 1. The problem was a failed joint in the drainage pipe from Route 41 and likely cost the county about 50K.
Kaufman-David reported a few residents have begun to participate in The Landings Bird List. Next steps include putting this initiative on The Landings residents’ website and exploring the possibility of getting an “Audubon Bird Sanctuary” designation for our neighborhood. Association Presidents have been asked to recruit a point person to share information regarding Environmental Committee work. This key person can make sure LMA Environmental Committee knows concerns, etc. of each Association. Interesting information, projects, and events, can also be shared. This may also facilitate ongoing and future searches for volunteers to help with LMA initiatives like monitoring the island on the Flicker Field Road as part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) study. The committee has also contacted LHA leaders and residents near Lake 1 promoting the ‘ring of responsibility’ initiative. SAFETY AND SECURITY ALERT Chairman, Michael Knupp reported coyotes have been sighted in The Landings. Residents who walk their pets at night are warned to be extra cautious. An article about living with wildlife was published in the April 2019 issue, on page 29, of The Eagle. LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky ended the meeting by sharing how impressed he is with the commitment, talent and expertise of board members and committee chairs.
ENVIRONMENTAL Committee chair, Maralyn KaufmanDavid, Ph.D reported Naomi Gerbarg summarized the Audubon guided tour of the Celery Fields by saying, “Visiting Celery Fields provided us with a lovely morning activity and an introduction to bird watching in our own community. We were fortunate to view a variety of species, and under the astute guidance of our Audubon guide learn their varied habits. As a plus, we were introduced to a bone collection in the museum/gift shop. My Ask Jerry Williams, the owner of Abel’s experience of dinosaur bones Ice Cream, his two biggest keys to success has always been to view them and accomplishing his goals and he’ll tell in a museum; I have never you “identifying your goals is crucial. You viewed a tibia and had a guide can’t hit a goal you haven’t defined yet. And point out the window to the perseverance. If you know you won’t give up, spot it was found. I had not you will eventually reach your goal.” previously visited and had He’s watching six of his young, talented no idea what a wonderful and employees do just that. In days, they will each interesting experience was to walk across the stage to celebrate their high be had.” school graduations. “Jill and I are blessed this Agnes Schipper and her year with a future firefighter, a civil engineer, a husband agreed to help with dentist, a businessman, a physical therapist and Environmental Committee a biomedical engineer. We have the best kids in events/issues that need on- the world. I love to see their hard work paying site attention when Kaufman- off,” Jerry said. Speaking of goals, Jerry has made it easy for David is gone from June 1 you to accomplish one for yourself. Abel’s is - October 1.
May is a transition month in Sarasota. Although the calendar says it is still spring, by late May it will definitely feel like summer time. Pelagic species such as king and Spanish mackerel will have migrated north, inshore fishing will be best early and late, and giant tarpon will invade the inshore Gulf of Mexico, a sure sign that summer is here! Speckled trout fishing is normally good in May. However, we are still recovering from the red tide, so it is hard to say. The flats near Big Pass should be productive. Casting Bass Assassin 4” Sea Shad baits on ¼ ounce jig heads in front of a drifting boat will produce speckled trout and some ladyfish. A live shrimp under a noisy cork is a deadly technique for catching trout. Pinfish, grunts, and pilchards will produce less fish, but generally larger ones. The shallow flats will be very active as they flood with bait. A low, incoming tide is the best time to search for reds and snook in the skinny water. Fish will stage in holes and deeper water then move up onto the shallow flats as the tide floods. Scented soft plastics, weedless gold spoons, topwater plugs, and live bait are all effective. Lures work best when looking for fish, water can be covered quickly. Live bait is best once the fish are located. Some of the largest trout will also be found in shallow water. Snook will be moving out to the beaches and will be scattered out all over. Mangrove points and bars near the passes should hold snook, as will structure in both Big Pass and New Pass. Outgoing tides are preferred,
Tarpon show up off the Siesta Key beaches in May
but as long as the water is moving, fish can be caught. Plugs are great baits that cover a lot of water quickly and are great fun to fish. Jigs and other soft plastics work well, too. Anglers who are proficient with a cast net will load up the well with pilchards and catch a lot of fish. Surf fishing should be excellent and by the end of May there will be decent numbers of snook in the surf line. Small white jigs and flies work well on snook, as does live bait fish. Silver spoons cast out and retrieved in quickly will fool mackerel and ladyfish. Live shrimp will fool a variety of species. By the middle of the month, many guides and recreational anglers will be focusing on one of the most exciting angling challenges found anywhere, light tackle casting to giant tarpon! This is truly world class big game fishing. Tarpon that migrate up our coasts are large fish that average 80 pounds, but reach over 200 pounds. 25-30 lb. spinning tackle and 12 weight fly rods are used most often. A live crab is the preferred bait, but live pinfish and other bait fish work well, too. These baits are fairly light and spinning tackle works best to cast and present baits.
Happiness is… Accomplishing Goals based on the premise that “everyone needs an ice cream goal.” So next time you come in, ask Jerry or one of his staff for one of their punch cards. When you hit your goal of 4 years ten ice cream items, you’ll bestraight! rewarded with a free single ice cream! How great is that? If you haven’t tried Abel’s before, make a plan this month to stop by and get started on accomplishing your sweet ice cream goal! Abel’s is celebrating the beginning of summer with these tempting seasonal flavors: Speaking of hitting your goals, their local supplier continues to win awards. This month they’re featuring two of their most recent award-winning flavors, Captains Chocolate (Smooth and triple rich, our house chocolate ice cream) and non-dairy Coffee Almond Fudge (Coffee non-dairy frozen dessert with a mountain

Get to Know Marie-Louise McHugh, Artist and Neighbor Marie-Louise McHugh, artist, wife, mother, and grandmother, is also the organizer, planner, and interviewer behind the scene for The Landings annual art show held each December. She will be a participant as well showing her unique still life and narrative art. While bedridden for a long period during childhood, Marie developed and thrived on her artistic imagination and has dreamed up images ever since. She grew up in Switzerland and despite her love of imagery, studied economics and law. She started creating images with photography and collage, but wanted to “say more” and moved onto working in oil. Much later, in her 40’s, Marie began taking art classes in Albany, New York to develop her artistic talent. In 2005, Marie created a blog that later became a delightful book titled A Pear A Day with beautifully rendered drawings and paintings. The pear a day expressed her feelings or activities for each day titled cleverly with names such as Torn, Tired, Celebration, I NEED YOU too much, or Shattered. In 2010, she published The Queens Project, a fantastic set of narrative portraits of her women friends. Her work for these projects and other large, gorgeous oil paintings was shown in New York

galleries since 1996 until about two years ago. In order to be shown in the well-known art scene of Soho and Chelsea, Marie had to be prolific, unique, talented, interesting, and approachable. Marie has all of these qualities plus warmth, wit, and a charming sparkle. You can find Marie at the pool, painting or chatting with friends at the clubhouse. You can find her work online, on Facebook and her website, www. ateliermchugh.com, as well. This fall, remember to watch for Marie’s notice in The Eagle, a Call to Artists, for the December Landings Community Art Show. There will be a Friday evening opening reception and Saturday show.

Post Eagle Landing
Photos by Gary Warren
I received a call from Gary Eason on Landings Blvd asking me if I wanted to photograph an eagle on his roof. Apparently the bird had been there a while. I got there and just as I raised my camera to shoot, it flew off! I did, however, manage to click off some shots.

Blooming This Month IRISES
Walking Iris
Mire Walking Iris
Why not Irises? Irises are a gorgeous variety of flowering plants that give rise to truly amazing flowers blooming this month at Sarasota Garden Club. There are several types of Irises that will bloom in Southern Florida. This includes African, blue flag, walking, and the blackberry lily, whose beautiful blooms look like Lilies. These striking plants make great accents with their green strap like foliage alone, but have exquisite colorful blooms. Irises are fairly tough from disease, drought, and insect resistant. A bonus is they attract butterflies and hummingbirds that use the nectar as a food source. Many of these will bloom several times a year. Come walk our gardens and see when they are in bloom. Save the Dates: 12/6/19-Holiday High Tea; 2/10/20-Fashion Show (SHIVOO GARDEN PARTY); 3/14/20-Gardens in Paradise Tour and Plant Sale. Kid’s Corner
By Heidi Bodor
Jared Gracia-David, almost 18 years old, a senior at Pine View School (graduating May 19th on his birthday!)
• Do you have any pets? Yes, we have two cats, both brown and black; named Clover and Waffles. • What languages do you speak? I’m in my fifth year of French at school. • Do you play any instruments? I have played the violin since I was 4 years old. • How long have you been in The Landings? 18 years. • What do you like most about The Landings? I like how peaceful and green it is and that kids can run around outside freely. • What organizations are you involved in? I am in Science Olympiad and founded the Juggling Club last year. I also run a volunteer cleanup project that meets monthly at Phillippi Park to clean up the park and help the environment. Our next and last meeting is May 4th at 9 a.m. Come join us! • Favorite ice cream? Talenti Black raspberry chocolate chip gelato • Favorite school subject? Biology, because I love nature and being outdoors. I’m interested in how the natural world works and uncovering its secrets. • Favorite book? Mycophilia: Revelations from the Weird World of Mushrooms. It’s an autobiography by mycologist Eugenia Bone presented in a humorous and entertaining way. It is about the fascinating mystery of fungi and their importance in the environment. • Favorite TV Show? I don’t really watch TV. • Favorite sport? I’m in the Sailor Circus. I also enjoy mountain biking, skiing and windsurfing. • Favorite color? Green or blue • Favorite movie? The Greatest Showman - it’s inspiring to see what’s possible through hard work • Favorite food? Cheesecake, since it’s so versatile. I made a Black Forest Cheesecake recently with cherries and an Oreo crust. • One word to describe you would be? Adventurous. • What do you do in your spare time? Most of my spare time is spent at the circus. I ride the unicycle, juggle, do slack rope, stilts, and perform on the high wire. I also like to cook everything, especially desserts since you can do so much with them. There is an artistic aspect and I like to experiment with that. I was in the FL State Student Cook-Off when I was in 9th grade – both regional and state competitions. I received first place for my original recipe of fresh spring rolls. I continue to cook for family events. • Tell me about your Circus experience. I joined in 4th grade. I loved being able to challenge myself continuously in the ways I wanted, doing exciting and impressive things. I started with easier

Jared Gracia-David acts like clowning and then juggling. With each act I saw, I wanted to try it. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I juggle on a unicycle on a slack rope and ride a bike on the high wire. I’ve learned countless life lessons in circus such as dedication, teamwork and perseverance. • If you could wave a magic wand, what ill in the world would you solve? Climate change, since it has so many detrimental impacts in different areas. • What are your summer plans? I hope to travel to Europe since I’ve always wanted to travel overseas and haven’t gotten to. I also hope to relax with no summer homework. • What advice would you give your parents? Find something you enjoy and do it. • What is something that you tried and failed and learned from? On several occasions, I’ve almost caught the wrong end of a torch while juggling fire. I learned to focus better on what I was doing. It takes a lot of practice to get each trick. It takes time, dedication, and perseverance. • What famous person would you like to meet and have lunch with? Nik Wallenda. I’d like to ask him how he overcomes his fears. • If you could change anything about school what would it be? Move the focus away from testing and toward learning for the sake of knowledge. • If you could wake up tomorrow with a superpower, what superpower would you want to have? Flying- it would be exhilarating and freeing. • What is your biggest dream? My biggest dream is to find a way to use biotechnology to solve world hunger. • What is your biggest worry? My biggest worry is to regret not taking advantage of the opportunities I get. • What do you want to be when you get older? I’d like to be a biology researcher helping to develop more efficient crops and biofuels. • What is the greatest thing ever invented? The unicycle, because it’s the most interesting form of transport.
