EMBRACING OUR DIFFERENCES OFFERS VIRTUAL TOURS OF ITS OUTDOOR ART EXHIBIT THROUGH APRIL 1ST
President’s Report By Norm Olshansky This was a great month. I got my second dose vaccine and the Bucs won the Super Bowl. Hopefully, now with Publix and other local sources providing vaccines, more people in the Landings will be able to get vaccinated. Please continue to be safe and wear masks. Congratulations to our New LMA Board members: Gary Kurnov, Cali Lampton, and Evita Ramberger as well as those reelected to the Board; Jim Goldman, Paul Weiner and Joan Koplin. Rounding out the Board are three members who did not have to run due to terms that have not yet been completed. They are: Jeff Smith, Roger Kidder and Me (Norman Olshansky). This election was the first where we had ballots submitted from 100% of Associations. The new board elected the following officers: President..... Norman Olshansky Vice President.......... Paul Weiner Treasurer................ Gary Kurnov Secretary........... Elita Ramberger As part of our effort to provide a high level of professional board leadership, the new board participated in a Board Orientation
on February 25th. Last month marked the last board meeting for Dick Bayles who has been a mainstay for LMA and our community. We plan to have a special recognition program in his honor in the coming months. He has agreed to continue his involvement on committees and with the transition to our new treasurer. Leaving the board due to term limits were Doug Day and Mike Knupp. Both have been important members of the board and I’m happy to report that they have agreed to continue to serve on key committees. I regret to inform you that
David Jacaruso passed away on January 28th. David had lived in the Landings and also was employed part time by LMA for maintenance work. Our condolences have been extended to his wife Marie and their extended family. Speeding continues to be an issue in the Landings. At our February meeting we suspended the use of the entry/exit decal of one of our residents who had multiple speeding violations within a one month period. Over the next few months we will address the repair to the bridge behind the Cloisters, the erosion by the steps leading to the gazebo, and engineering estimates for future roads work. We are recruiting additional members for our committees. If you are interested, please contact the following committee chairs: Landscaping............ Paul Weiner Security................... Mike Knupp Roads................ Elida Ramberger Drainage.................Roger Kidder Lakes............................ Jeff Smith Social ................... Cali Lampton Communications......Joan Koplin The Eagle........... Gordon Garrett
Budget and Finance................... Gary Kurnov Environmental............... Maralyn Kaufman Nature Trail .........David Osborn and Allison Taylor Nominating..............Joan Koplin Maintenance...............Ron Pierce Website......................Dick Bayles We are also looking for a new chair of our external affairs committee. I’m often asked how I am able to handle all of the issues that are on LMA’s plate. The simple answer is that I don’t. I have been blessed with an excellent board, our very professional property manager (Steve Brockenshire), and most important……. Committee chairs and members who handle the day to day operations of the association. There have been a lot of new people arriving in the Landings. Unfortunately, due to covid, this past year has seen few social events and opportunities for people to get to know each other. Activities at the club have also been limited. Hopefully, we can look forward, by the end of the year, to a return to normalcy.

The Covid-19 pandemic has badly impacted the art world. Even here at The Landings, we sadly had to forgo our art shows and concerts last year as well as this year. Nevertheless, our wonderful Landings com mu n it y has come together here and there, in small gatherings. Aren’t you thankful for having patios, parking lots and driveways these days? I also have gotten to know and appreciate so many more of my neighbors and I am truly thankful for this unexpected gift. This is how I heard about Marlene Stowe, an internationally known luxury jewelry designer. Because of the pandemic and social distancing, I found it difficult to visit and write about artists, but I met Marlene, a very elegant and inspiring woman, at a friend’s patio where she brought samples of her amazing creations. Marlene Stowe spent her childhood in Nice, France where her father was a n importer of fabrics. She was educated in Switzerland and she wa nt e d t o b e c om e a doctor. While studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, her father passed away and she had to return to Nice. There she was left with a lot of fabrics, so she decided to t r y

her hand at designing clothes. There was a lot of high-end couture on the Cote D’Azur, in Nice and Monte Carlo, where she quick ly became a respected designer. After moving to New York City, she continued designing luxury dresses. As she was Married to a Belgian diamond cutter, she tried her hand at designing jewelry, at first for just a few friends in Houston, Texas. She was so successful with her creations that she decided to make it her business. This led to a 30year career of designing and traveling to promote her luxury creations. Her busi ness was known as “Marlene Stowe-
Atelier Bijoux”. Her jewels were sold at Saks here in Sarasota, Neiman Marcus in Bar Harbor, ME, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and many others in the country. Because she developed t ie s i n S a ra s o t a, she purchased a place at the Landings in 2001 which she only used part time until she became a fulltime resident in 2017. Marlene Stowe showed me a collection of beautifully crafted rings, amazing pins, necklaces and earrings with lots of diamonds, pearls and other gemstones. What caught my attention is the sculptural quality of her work which is elegant and simple in design. It was
created for women who need special and unique pieces for high-end affairs. Ah… the days when you really dressed up to go to out! Today, Marlene enjoys her retirement, but her work is still available in various places: 1stdibs. com has a Marlene Stowe ga l ler y page a s do e s artnet.com.

In Burt’s memory, the condo association has thoughtfully placed a memorial bench, directly across from our happy home of 30 years. With landscaping and pavers, my family endearingly refers to the outdoor reflecting area as “Burt’s Park.” Each day, I wipe the morning dew from Burt’s bench and have myself a moment of quiet reflection. To my delight and surely Burt’s pride, visitors stop by throughout the day on a walk or with a glass of wine. They share a memory or a chat in honor of my “Mensch” on the bench and the love of my life. In Burt’s words, he asked to “Please write a thank-you in The Landings paper to all my friends and neighbors, not mutually exclusive.” With tears of humility and a charming boyish gasp of laughter, he continued, “I just have too many friends here to thank individually.” It comforted him to know I would not be alone, living amongst truly authentic and caring people, after his passing. I have been embraced, included and checked-in on throughout these last difficult months. As I begin to navigate, on my own, the life Burt passionately taught me to embrace, I feel blessed and grateful for each new day and the solace that comes with my mensch’s bench. With hand on heart and with Burt’s blessing, Sandy Frank

They were thanked for participating in the “Meet the Candidates” evening and for submitting ballots. Every Association submitted their ballots on time. • Thanks were given to Joan Koplin and the Nominating Committee for their excellent recruitment efforts. • Several security issues and repair and maintenance issues will be addressed at this meeting. • The new Boa rd will pa rt icipate in a Board Orientation event later in February. All candidates and current board members are encouraged to attend. • The new landscaping company has completed its first month and work in several areas has been noted and appreciated. • Repair of the bridge near the Cloisters, erosion of the steps by the Gazebo and engineering estimates for future roads work will be addressed over the next few months. • Anyone interested in participating in committee work should contact the new LMA President. • This meeting marked the last night Dick Bayles would be serving on the Boa rd. Ol sh a n sk y cou ld not t h i n k of a nyone pa st or c u r rent who h a s contributed more than Dick Bayles in making The Landings so special. His cumulative knowledge and experience w i l l b e i r replaceable. H i s yea r s of service and dedication will be formally acknowledged at a future event.
FINANCE REPORT
Tr e a s u r e r, D i c k B ayle s r e p o r t e d annual expenses would be under budget primarily due to underspending by the Landscape Committee. In addition, expenses for the roads project were less than the highest projection. Homeowners Association President, Bill Whitman expressed high praise for the road work.
MANAGER’S REPORT
Landing’s Manager, Steve Brockenshire reported the following: • Two priority items in the works are repair of the bridge near the Cloisters and Nature Trail issues. A restoration company and a retired engineer, now a handy man, are going to recommend a solution. Green Scapes is submitting a

second bid within the next week. Their first bid was $10,000, but included 391 feet of trail. The plan is to scrape the trail, re-contour the trail for better drainage and lay stone less apt to wash away. The stone will be small enough that walking and riding bikes can be done easily. Suggestions were made to enlist the help of volunteers, possibly Scouts who are residents and others to save money by laying the stone. Olshansky thanked the residents for the idea and the Board would consider the idea moving forward.
BOARD ORIENTATION
Board member Joan Koplin reported the Board Orientation event in late February is for new and existing board members. Valuable information has been compiled for this program. Committee guidelines, a detailed budget review and additional i n for m at ion w i l l b e r ev iewe d a nd discussed to help every board member do their work effectively and efficiently. Legal responsibilities, Sunshine Law implications and other issues will also be discussed. Most board members will be serving the Landing’s Management Association for the first time.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
Chairman Michael Knupp reported his committee recommended the suspension of a resident’s entry decal after three speeding violations in less than 30 days and a fourth, soon thereafter. All these violations were in excess of 10 mph over the posted speed limits. The board was asked to vote on this suspension. The resident has the right to appeal this decision to an independent Appeals Board. A motion was made to suspend, and the motion passed. Knupp reported the theft of holiday gift and real estate transaction funds from the gatehouse. An initial investigation is proceeding with the guard company and if the results are not satisfactory, a further investigation will be launched with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. In 2019, a dump truck entered the North Gate causing substantial damage. Then, after delivering its contents, substantially damaged the exit gate while leaving the property. After the company and driver were identified, a County Sheriff issued a warrant and arrested the driver. Knupp was notified about a week ago, after a few trials and appeals, the driver was found guilty. Reimbursement of repairs and court costs to The Landings may follow.
EAGLES NEST AREA
The ENA Committee is requesting a reimbursement of about $100 for the use of Survey Monkey. A motion was made to reimburse the expense once an invoice is provided. The motion passed.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Committee chair, Maralyn Kaufman-
David, Ph.D. reported receiving a call from the non-profit group, Sarasota Bay Watch. The organization is dedicated to restoring coastal eco systems utilizing citizen participation. An event to cleanup marine debris in Philippi Creek along the area of the Gazebo was being planned. They were requesting permission to enter the area because of posted no trespassing signs and inviting residents to participate in the effort. A motion was made to permit the Sarasota Bay Watch organization access to the property from the water on Sunday, March 21 and to allow the Environmental Committee permission to recruit residents. The motion passed.
DRAINAGE
Co-Chair, Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder reported the retaining wall of the ditch on the corner of Landings Boulevard was rebuilt and the ditch cleaned by Aquagenix. The cost was $2,311. Several drainage issues left over from the Santec paving project were completed by C Squared. Th is included a new cement storm runoff at the corner of PPC North and PPC West. The primary cause of the 5158 Kestral Park Terrace subsidence problem is still a mystery. The storm water line was cleaned by Total Pipeline and videoed by Greater Bay Plumbing and no cause was found. Large areas of the front lawn and driveway are continuing to collapse. The next step is to dig up the driveway. An arborist looked at the Live Oak and determined the roots could be cut under the driveway without killing the tree. The project is expected to be expensive. Total Pipeline also cleaned the drainage box and storm water line at the end of Kestral Park Place.
LAKES
Committee Chair Jeff Smith reported five of the nine lakes needed attention or repair this month. Lake 9: Aquagenix installed a new motor and pump which repaired the fountain. The lakes mud flap becomes more prominent during the dry season. The Landings is mandated to keep the littoral area which is inspected by the county for compliance. Improvement of the lake by planting native water plants is being discussed with interested Association Presidents. The cost of the project is $700. Lake 7: The fountain lights are being repa i red a nd on ly a shor t delay i s expected. Lake 6: Timer and circuit breaker issues occurred on both fountains. The best way to re-cover the open vault discovered in the lake is being discussed as a safety concern. Lake 5: Two areas of failed rip-rap will
be replaced. Lake 4: The timer which was temporarily fixed on the East fountain will be replaced by an electrician. The committee is working with Association Presidents a nd t he Env i ron menta l Committee to resolve issues with the grate on top of the vault. Lake 3: The fountain has been temporarily shut down for repair to a ruptured float. A short delay is expected. Algae issues have lessened due to cooler weather and both fountains have been cleaned. Lake 2: The installation of rip-rap and removal of invasive vegetation is underway. Replacing erosion protection of the culvert (outlet) which is collapsed in some places will also be part of the project. All aspects of the project are being discussed with the Treehouse Association President and their Drainage Committee.
LANDSCAPING
Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner reported the completion of renovations on three islands at a cost of $5,665.26. This included islands 2, 37 and 62 at the South Gate entrance.

Racquet Club News | LRC President’s Report It’s mid-February as I type my first article, but I feel like it’s Thanksgiving. So many people to thank, so many things to be thankful for. But let’s start with Dick Bayles, our LRC Board member for 12 years and LRC Board President for 11 years – someone who’s irreplaceable yet has to be replaced. Dick’s contributions are too numerous to list – but let’s just say – he’s our Tom Brady of the LRC Board. Thank you for all you have done, Dick, as you have left the LRC in far better shape as you move from the President’s chair. Fair winds and following seas, Dick. We’re also thankful for Kevin Lechlitner, our GM. He’s been leading and improving the LRC for almost 15 years – my how time flies. But our Club is so much better off with him at the helm – thank you Kevin. And our Pro’s – Mo and Jen – we’re thankful for their world class teaching skills – not to mention their incredible tennis ability. And thanks to Edvin, Hans and Ruben for keeping our courts the best in Florida – they truly are kept in tip top condition. Last but not least – thanks to Gary and Diana for keeping our court times/Pro Shop all in order. We really

do have the “A” team at the LRC. Thanks to all the volunteers who make our club so special – whether you’re on the Board, an ongoing committee or just the occasional volunteer – it all makes a
difference. It’s your tireless contributions which make our beloved Club that much better. And thanks to you, our members – for supporting the club during COVID, for
wearing a mask as you cross through the Pro Shop and for helping us keep the LRC the best value in town. The Landings Racquet Club – tell only your best friends.

The LRC has a new President on the Board of Directors. Mayson Brooks has stepped forward to fill the vacancy left by Dick Bayles. Dick is still on the Board but is no longer its President. Mayson has big shoes to fill but I am confident that he is up to the task. I want to publicly thank Dick Bayles for everything he has done for the Club during his time as President of the Board. The time and energy he committed to the Club was quite impressive and we benefitted greatly from it. The Club we have to enjoy today is a direct result of the vision, knowledge and leadership of Dick Bayles. He deserves all the thanks in the world. The 2021 LRC Board of Directors are as follows: Mayson Brooks, President, Paul Weiner, Vice President, Sue Lewis-Garrett, Treasurer, Ch rist i ne K nupp, Secretary, Rudy Blohm, Sue Ault and Dick Bayles. Moving forward, the LRC monthly Board meetings will be on the 3rd Wednesday
I have been asked ma ny times recently about the tennis court dimensions by juniors and adults. In case you are also curious, here are the tennis court dimensions. The tennis court is 78 feet long. It is 27 feet wide for singles and 36 feet wide for double s. Ye s, t he double s alleys are four and a half feet wide each, even though they look smaller than that. From the net to the service line, the distance is 21 feet. And from the service line to the baseline, the distance is 18 feet. What is important to realize is that from corner to corner in

singles it is eighty two and a half feet long. So, you gain four feet and a half of real estate (space) compared to hitting dow n t he l i ne. In doubles from corner to corner, it is 86 feet long. That means that you gain EIGHT feet of extra space to hit into compared to hitting down the line. That is why I tell you at practice that hitting crosscourt is the foundation of your patterns of play for singles or doubles. When t r yi ng to keep your strategy and tactics simple, always t r y to practice and improve the quality of your crosscourt shots. It will make

I really like this family business. Just fresh good food, especially excellent fish and seafood. If you want quality, simply cooked to order fish and sides, this is it. My favorite key lime pie in town, too. So glad I found this little place a few years ago. Clam chowder is really nice, too.

At last month’s LMA Board meeting, it was reported there was an on going investigation on theft of funds dropped off at the front gate for pickup by a real estate agent. We are pleased to report that the thief has been identified by polygraph and a signed written confession. The suspect was identified as a part time guard. Upon signing of the confession, he was immediately terminated and reported to the licensing authority. Full restitution was made by the employee. We consider the case closed. In another issue reported at the LMA Board meeting another pending criminal case has been s e t t led. T h i s ca s e i nvolved a dump truck that broke the entry and exit arms of the north gate back in July of 2019. The driver ref used to ma ke pay ment for the property damage and was arrested by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. A letter from the States Attorney stated the defendant pled No Contest to a Withhold Adjudication and was placed on 12 months probation automatically terminated upon complet ion of t he ter m s of probation. The terms of probation were payment of Court costs, cost of prosecution and restitution to the LMA of repair costs in the amount of $729.46. The payment will be paid through the probation department who will then pay the Landings.

Are Foods Containing Corn Potentially Harmful to Your Pet? The Short Answer is Yes. By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect It always saddens me when I see a headline in the news containing the words “Dog Food”, “Recall”, and “Dog Deaths”, especially when it is a situation that has a solution and can be prevented. If you are not already aware, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued a recall informing pet parents that high levels of aflatoxin in some pet foods resulted in 70 dog deaths and even more who got sick. The specific brands include Pro Pac, Sportmix, Nunn Better Maintenance, and Splash Fat Cat. Upon seeing this recall due to aflatoxins, I felt it was important to bring to your attention the importance of avoiding feeding your pet foods that contain corn as an ingredient. It is really not worth the potential risks involved to your pet.
What Are Aflatoxins?
According to the FDA, aflatoxins are toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus that can grow on pet food ingredients such as corn, peanuts, and other grains. At high levels, aflatoxins can cause illness (aflatoxicosis), liver damage, and death in pets. The toxins can be present even if there is no visible mold on the pet food. If your pet eats food that contains high levels of aflatoxins, they can get aflatoxin poisoning. Pets are prone to aflatoxin poisoning because, unlike people, who generally eat a varied diet, most pets generally eat the same food continuously day in and day out. I recommend rotating your pet’s diet across brands throughout the year for better vitamin nutrition and a balanced diet. If your pet’s food contains aflatoxins, the toxins could accumulate in your pet’s system as they continue to eat the same food. If your pet eats moldy corn, grains, or peanuts, they can also get aflatoxin poisoning. Peanut butter can also cause this issue, which is why it is so important to buy a natural pet safe peanut butter if used as a treat or to disguise pills.
What Are the Symptoms?
If you not ice a ny of the followi ng symptoms, your pet could be suffering from aflatoxin poisoning: • Sluggishness • Vomiting • Jaundice (yellow tint to their eyes, gums, or skin due to liver damage) • Loss of appetite • Unexplained bruising or bleeding • Diarrhea
The Impact of Corn On the Pet Industry
For the last 17 years I have been blessed to work in this industry. This also means for the past 17 years I have been seeing dogs get sick and even dying when they are fed foods that contain corn. Besides corn being covered with glyphosate and raised with GMO’s, if not stored or handled properly mold can grow causing a myriad of problems including aflatoxin poisoning. Corn is one of the hardest proteins to digest. Cows have 4 stomach chambers and still have problems breaking it down.
I also do not have to explain to anyone after they eat corn what their stool looks like, ha! This is proof of how much is absorbed and cannot imagine what it does to dogs and cats who have small digestive tracts. The reason why the grain-free industry started was because of the negative effects corn was having on dogs. Unfortunately, beneficial grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet, and spelt have been pushed aside because of this. What we really should be looking at is how much protein is derived from meat and how little grain or vegetables are in food, instead of putting grain and grain-free against each other like it’s a political race.
What to Do If You Think Your Dog Is Eating Food with Corn?
First, read the label. Most quality brands will specifically say their food contains no corn on the packaging. Check the ingredients list on the back of the label to see if corn is listed. If you see corn listed, look for an alternative food. I recommend visiting your local pet store with a nutrition
specialist who is knowledgeable. I believe all dogs should detox twice a year with milk thistle for 4-6 weeks to help cleanse their system and highly recommend doing this regardless of if your pet is being fed a diet that contains corn. If your pet is exhibiting any sig ns of aflatoxin poisoning, take them to a veterinarian immediately. Lastly, speak to an expert on a diet that is right for you pet. I would be happy to review what you are currently feeding your pet and recommend a diet plan that is best for them. Sign-up for a free one-on-one nutrition consult with me at www.dogperfect.com/ nutritionconsult. About the Author: Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect, has a passion for educating pet parents on the power of nutrition and how it can improve their pet’s lives with proper food, supplements, and treats. With over 17 years of industry experience, he has helped change the lives of thousands of pets.

The Valentine’s Day Heart-to-Heart Contest Winners By Dee Ricaptio Thank you all for participating! There were many entries and many close guesses and lots of fun in the process. Thanks to Brion Palmer, Landings Eagle Editor for donating the three Top Prizes. Thank you to Sharon Goldman who came up with this great idea and also cojudged the contest.
First Prize Winter: Teresa & Bob Manteiga. Teresa & Bob said they did lots of research and took the “process of elimination approach”. They had 13 correct answers (as did Kevin Lechlitner) but won the top prize via the tiebreaker! The Manteigas took home the top-prize by correctly guessing the tie break photo (Lillian Peltz Petow). 1st Place Prize: Fresh Catch Fish Market & Grill $100.00 Gift Certificate
Second Place Winner: Kevin Lechlitner. Kevin said, “Working at the Club for 15 years and seeing everyone who passes by was a benefit. NOW THAT YOUR OLDER... If you can’t think of a word, say “I forgot the English word for it.” That way people will think you’re bilingual instead of an idiot. I’m at a place in my life where errands are starting to count as going out.

I don’t always go the extra mile, but when I do it’s because I missed my exit.
941.350.0451 941.266.4873
I just did a week’s worth of cardio after walking into a spider web. A recent study has found women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it. Kids today don’t know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the channel. I love approaching 80, I learn something new every day and forget 5 other things. A thief broke into my house last night. He started searching for money, so I got up and searched with him. Just remember, once you’re over the hill you begin to pick up speed.
