BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD

President’s Report  By Norm Olshansky This past month, the Governor opened up Florida for more economic activity and group events. The Landings Racquet Club also opened the Fitness Center and doubles tennis with a few restrictions. Also, bars and restaurants have opened. Unfortunately, we are seeing an increase in Covid cases in our area, so please continue to do what you can to be safe. Tropical storms are abundant this time of year. Please make sure you are prepared and that you keep your property clear of items that could be taken airborne in a storm. A lot of damage during storms are cause by flying debris. I’m pleased to report that we have secured leadership for several important projects. Dee Ricapita has agreed to chair our Policies and Procedures Project. Several others will be helping her. We need to update our existing policies with any actions that have been taken by the board in the past which are in minutes but not in our official documents. Steve Brockenshire, our new Argus Manager, is in the process of gathering old minutes for as far back as Argus has maintained. Dee and her committee will review those minutes and identify items which we need in order to update our policies and procedures documents. Jim Goldman has agreed to

chair our Holiday Lights Project this year. Henry Rhodes has recruited committee members to serve on the Eagles Nest Area Committee. Members of the Eagles Nest Area Committee are: Henry Rhodes: Chairman, Neil Goldman, Joe Hennessey, Maralyn Kaufman and Gary Kunov (who is a resident abutting the ENA property. The committee will seek wide input on what, if anything, residents want to see going forward in the ENA. They will then come back to the board with recommendations. Many thanks to Neil Goldman and the many volunteers who conducted research at the South Gate to determine the extent of nonresident entries. While the number of nonresident dog walkers and others who entered The Landings was not significant,

there are many who want more secure north and south gates. The security committee is looking at different types of gates, their functionality, and costs. They will come to the board with their recommendations. We will need to determine initial costs and maintenance in order to decide if we should proceed and how we would raise the revenues needed. The board recognizes that erosion on the nature trail and at the steps to the gazebo are a problem causing water to cover part of the trail and steps at high tide. We are working on finding a solution and ask for your patience. We want to remind all that LMA is only responsible for landscaping on LMA Common Areas. Individual associations and homeowners are responsible for all other landscaping including to the edge of property lines as well as LMA “right of way” areas next to roads. See article 5 Section 2 of our documents which

are posted online. We have received complaints that residents are leaving their blue poop bags on the street or on lawns of other residents. Please continue to be diligent about picking up and proper disposal when walking your dogs. We recognize that our community is now about 40 years old and needs infrastructure upgrading and repairs. The board will be looking to develop a long term capital plan. Many thanks to Jim and Sandy Goldman for installing the No Trespass & No Hunting signsaround the mangroves and at the Gazebo. The next meeting of the LMA Board is on July 2nd at 7 PM. If you would like to attend by zoom, please contact Dick Bayles at landings.management@outlook.com We hope you will make the best of the current Covid situation and have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Gate Security Improvements The LMA Board.

Since the closing of the South Gate last month, it has made u s muc h more awa re of t he importance of this operation, and what an inconvenience the gate was when closed to the residences of The Landings who live in the South West section of the facility. It certainly increased the traffic on Landings Blvd and the Main and North Gates. There is no question that the gate security situation could be improved and the following areas should be investigated. 1. When the iron gates are closed the areas of easy trespassing should addressed. Examples are improved closers and tightening up ease of entering.

2. Improved notices could be added, concerning private and instructions on how to contact the Main gate along with how to get there. Please note that most on the commercial GPS’s instruct the operator to the South gate. 3. Some attention should be add r e s s e d t o t h e i n c r e a s e d problems of parking on the roads to the Marina Boat yard. There is no question that there are more people trespassing and walking their dogs in The Landings facility. Any effort to improve the North and South Gates security would be an improvement. Regards, Janet and J.J. Fey.

Landings Being Fully Gated Dear LMA Board Members, I would like to request your approval for a study and the implementation of secure gates at the south and north entrances of our Landings community property. I live on Starling Drive and have concerns for the safety of our homes and owners especially during the economic crisis that our country is going through. There will be more people without financial means and we will be subject to the possibility of burglaries occurring in our Association without secure gates at the south and north entrances There are five new buildings being built just outside the South Gate which eventually will be oc-

Thank You Dear Neighbors: I want to tell you how much I appreciated the support I received by so many of you for my election to be a delegate to Democratic National Convention. It is one of the greatest honors of my life. I look

cupied with residents who may want to walk or bike within our community. For the small amount of less than $150 per Landings household, it would be beneficial to proceed with this needed assessment to insure safety for everyone. The density of families that live near the South Gate would make this a priority in considering what project and where the LMA funds should be equally appropriated. I appreciate your attention and due diligence regarding our safety in The Landings. Best regards, Jane Carpenter Janeatthecape@aol.com

LMA Meeting Notes  by Trebor Britt Once again, the monthly LMA board meeting was conducted via Zoom. LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky began the meeting by announcing the following during his president’s report: • S everal volunteers will be assisting Dee Ricapito, who has agreed to chair the Policies and Procedures Project. The group will compile all actions taken by The Board in the past and include them in the Policies and Procedures document. • Jim Goldman agreed to chair The Landings Holiday Project. • H en r y R hodes ag re ed to chair the Eagles Nest Area Committee. Volunteers are being sought to serve on this committee. • L anding’s Manager, Steve Brockenshire is seeking costs and options for improvements to the gazebo area. • Residents are reminded that LMA is only responsible for landscaping of LMA common areas. Documents clearly show individual associations and homeowners are responsible for all other la ndscapi ng including the edge of property lines and LMA right-of-way next to roads. • C i rcu it Cit y Li m ited has been contacted regarding the removal of the downed tree near the North Gate. • The Landscaping Committee is looking into grants that might be used to eliminate additional invasive plants. • Jim and Sandy Goldman were thanked for installing the new “No Trespassing, No Hunting” signs. • Residents are reminded to keep loose items secured on their property as the hurricane/ tropical Storm season begins.

FINANCE REPORT

Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported that for this time of year there are an unusual amount of outstanding receivables. T he pa ndem ic caused the governor to establish a moratorium on foreclosures and liens. In the last 15 years, Bayles could only remember two receivables that were remained unpaid by the end of the year. He fully expects those currently pending to be paid.

MANAGERS REPORT L a nd i ng ’s Ma n age r, St eve Brocken sh i re repor ted t he following:

• Responsibility for the care of the grass on Phillippi Shores continues to be in question. As soon as the grass reaches a n u n a c c e p t able le ng t h , Brockenshire will report the issue on the county online request system called “Click Fix”. • A contractor will be on property this week to propose a solution for tidal flooding issues. • Sir Speedy is working on a final draft and cost estimate of the postcard John Kaplan wishes to distribute. • Brockenshire fielded many complaints regarding the algae problem on Lake 1.

LAKES Co-Chair, Michael Knupp and Roger Kidder reported seasonal algae problems in several lakes. A lgae bloom s h ave plugged fountains in Lake 3 and substantial algae and Hydrilla outbreaks have occurred in Lake 1. Complicating the issue is the contractor’s inability to put their spraying boat into the lake due to the repair of the inlet by the county. Owners who have properties surrounding the lake will be contacted to allow permission for the contractor to spray the invasive plants from the shoreline. Fou nt a i n e le c t r ic a l i s sue s continue to be a problem. Residents are asked to notify their association presidents, Mike Knapp or Jeff Smith when fountains are observed to be pulsating or making noise.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

C h a i r m a n M ic h ael K nupp r e p or t e d a c c ou nt i ng for 4 0 volunteer hours over an eight day period collecting South Gate usage and trespassing data. A total of 70 pedestrians entered or exited The Landings at the South Gate. Of these, 56 were residents who were walking or on bikes. Twelve people were identified as unauthorized. They were neither residents or guests of residents. They were politely advised they were trespassing on private property with little objection. All were residents of the high rises at Philippi Landings. The committee may collect additional data in the fall. The com m it tee i n it ially recommends that a “Private Property No Trespassing“ sign be moved to a more visible location at the South Gate. This would be an interim step until a final solution can be

A motion was made to allow the Safety and Security Committee permission to continue to explore options for better security at the North and South Gates. The motion passed. An additional motion was made to lock the North and South Gates at 9 PM. The motion was defeated 5-3. LANDSCAPING

Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner reported looking into applying for grants that could be used to offset the cost of eliminating Brazilian Pepper trees and other invasive foliage on Landing’s common property. Concerns were raised over who would maintain the landscaping of property in the area of Landings South V as ownership of the property is unclear. Board member, Joan Koplin volunteered to go to the county building office to see if a survey of that property was on file.

ROADS

A motion was made to reconsider a vote made at the last meeting regarding the division of the long island on Peregrine Point Drive. The motion passed. It was noted emergency vehicles currently only have access to the homeowner’s residence from one direction. After a discussion a new motion was made to divide the long island into two smaller islands. The break in the island to correspond with the homeowner’s driveway. LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky, added this is not to set a precedent for any future actions regarding individual homeowner’s access. The motion passed by a vote of 7-1.

A GREAT STORY GIRLS WILL LOVE Compiled By: Dee Ricapito

Th is is my brief version of a n a r t icle ca l led: “T here’s A Stranger in My House!” By: Rose Madeline Mula, copyright 1997. “I woke up one morning and a weird thing happened. A strange old lady has moved in. I h ave no idea who she i s, where she came from, or how she got in. I certainly didn’t invite her. All I know is, she was there, and resembles me! She’s clever a nd ke eps out of sight; but whenever I pass a mirror, I catch a glimpse of her. When I look in a mirror to c he c k on my app ea ra nce, suddenly, there she is, hogging the whole mirror and completely obliterating my gorgeous face and body. I’ve tried screaming at her to leave but she just screams back at me. If she is going to hang around, the least she can do is offer to pay rent. But, no! The couple of dollar bills I occasionally find in my old jeans, or some lose change laying around, but that certainly isn’t enough to cover the rent. In fact, I don’t like to jump to conclusions, but I think she

stea l s money f rom me qu ite regularly. I go to the bank and withdraw $200.00. Then, a few days later, it’s gone. I certainly don’t go through it that fast, so I can only conclude that the old lady pilfers it. For an old lady, she’s quite childish. She also gets into my closets when I’m not home and alters my clothes. They’re getting tighter every day. A not he r t h i ng , I w i sh she would stop messing with my files and the papers on my desk. I can’t find a thing. She finds lots of imaginative ways to irritate me. She gets to my newspapers and mail before me and blurs all the print; and she’s does something sinister to the volume controls on my TV, and cell phone. Now, all I hear are mumbles and whispers. She’s also made my exercise stuff and my vacuum cleaner heavier; all my knobs and faucets hard to turn; and my bed higher and a challenge to climb in and out of.

Forget the Fourth of July By Dee Ricapito

That’s what most people do. But, we don’t forget to have picnics, relax, or watch fireworks...on this fun holiday. But some forget to remember what the day actually means! Being a Philadelphia native and school teacher, we cherished visiting Independence Hall and honored Ben Franklin’s tradition and the place where the Declaration of Independence was signed. We ought to be talking to our young ones about the signers of The Declaration of Independence who were men creating a new country with 13 colonies, where every person would have full liberty (in a fair way). They were breaking away from British Loyalty to the Crown.

No kings in America. They created a climate where the people told the government what to do--not the other way around. That’s what makes our country exceptional. This is a good day to tell our children this is how we honor those and their sacrifices over the years for our freedom of speech and religion. We are not free to loot and riot in the streets and hurt other citizens but free to love what we have in the United States of America. So, reflect and appreciate the freedoms we have on this Fourth of July holiday and enjoy!

Building a Better Bowl By Nicole Kenedy

Big or small, hound or herder, each and every dog has unique nutritional needs. But regardless of breed, size, shape or activity level, the best way to keep any dog healthy is by feeding them a diet that is nutritionally balanced and complete. Still, for your precious pup, that can leave a lot to be desired. Just like us, without a little variety dogs can miss nutrients they need and get bored with the same old, tired meals. While some owners have the option to go homemade, for those that don’t there are plenty of ways to make your dog’s meals healthier and more appealing. Want to upgrade your dog’s diet and add a little excitement to mealtime? Here’s how you can build a better bowl.

The Essentials A balanced bowl begins with the base where your dog gets 90% of their nutrition. Whether that comes in the form of kibble, raw food, wet canned or freezedried options can be determined by your dog’s preferences, your budget, and a number of other factors. The important th ing is that you ensure that base is from a reputable source and nutritionally rock solid.

to us to make sure they’ve got the hydrators they need to keep their diet from being too dry. Adding liquids such as bone broth or goat milk can help whet their whistle, add important nutrients and a little extra flavor, and aid digestion as well.

Once your base is established, t here a re a nu mb er of ways to take th i ngs up a notch to provide added health benefits and enjoyment.

Mixers and Toppers – If your dog is getting enough from their base, but you really want to dial up certain benefits, mixers or toppers are a great way to go. Rich with nutrients, mixers and toppers are available in a number of formats like cans, packs, and pouches, and can help round out your dog’s diet with the ingredients they need to thrive.

Hydrators – Like their human counterparts, many dogs don’t drink enough water. Without a mobile app to remind them, it’s up

Su p pl e m e nt s – Prevent com mon issues and promote long-term health with the help of vitamins, herbs and superfoods.

Mixing it Up

Wit hout t h e p r op e r i nt a k e, m a ny dog s c a n su f fe r f rom digest ive problem s, h ip a nd joint pain, anxiety, skin and coat complications, immune system shortfalls, allergies, heart trouble, and more.

Specific Selections While most dogs’ diet needs are similar, every dog is different, and a number of factors can influence how you build your pup a better bowl. General dietary needs vary by breed and size, but there are other components to consider. First, age. Overall, puppies require more food, can handle larger portions, and eat more frequently as their bodies grow. For senior dogs you may want to drop the portion size, but bump

up t he hyd rat ion w it h some options discussed earlier. Second, fit ness. Got a n especially active dog? Consider hydrators and toppers to keep joints lubricated, curb fatigue, and bump up the energy gained from useful protein. Is your dog under weight? A high-calorie supplement could be the answer. Third, condition. What other factors are affecting your dog’s well-being? From digestive issues to pesky allergies and frequent anxiety, you may need to address specifics when crafting your dog’s diet. Additionally, there may be other factors that distinguish your dog’s health outlook from others. Things like geography (urban vs. rural) or climate (hot vs. cold) can impact activit y, hydration, and more, and should be examined when building your bowl. Finally, don’t forget to offer a change of pace. Think about your own diet: you’d get tired of even your favorite meal if you were forced to eat it every day. Feeding your dog the same thing can be boring. Plus, rotating ingredients can help you achieve a better dietary balance.

Helpful Guides G oi ng b eyond a st a nd a rd doggie diet to build a better bowl requires some extra effort, but it’s nothing that can’t be alleviated with the help of great resources. S t a r t b y c o n s u lt i n g yo u r veterinarian for recommendations that will address your dog’s nutritional needs. Your vet has the expertise to suggest what’s required for your dog’s diet based

on their life stage and lifestyle, and they know your pup almost as well as you do. T h e n p ay a v i s it t o yo u r local independent pet store to i nvest igate you r opt ion s. I n addition to carrying great pet food selections that can establish your dog’s dietary base, wellinformed employees can point you to the hydrators, mixers, toppers, and supplements that can help you build your dog a better bowl.

As this is written in mid-June, we have continued to cautiously return to a “new normal” for LRC operations. We have opened all courts to doubles play, loosened the restrictions on pool use and expanded its hours, and opened the Fitness Center, with restrictions on the number of people and equipment being used. Your board has tried to balance everyone’s desire for more with the understanding that The Landings community and the club’s membership fall mostly into the “compromised” catego-

ry insofar as the risk of exposure to the virus is concerned. As the county eases it’s restrictions, I expect to see a, hopefully small, rise in new COVID-19 cases as people begin to congregate. The board meets every two weeks (virtually, at this point) to review the situation in Sarasota and its implications for club operations, as well as how our members are following the usage guidelines. As of the now, there has been a slight increase in new cases of the virus in Sarasota County following the relaxation of its restrictions. And, we will, if necessary, revert to tighter restrictions if we feel it is necessary to protect our members. Stay safe, everyone!

of the facilities at the Club are accessible in some capacity. The courts are open from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM and people are able to play doubles again. We have staggered the court times so everyone isn’t coming and going at the same time. The pool is back to its normal hours of dawn to dusk. At the time this article was written, the hot tub is still limited to one person at a time or two if they live under the same roof and the hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Fit ness Center has the same hours as the hot tub and is limited to five people at a time. Reservations are required and masks are mandatory inside the Fitness Center. Please check with the Pro Shop if you have any questions about the current Club policies. I know I said it last month, but

News from the Court  By Adrian “Mo” Moghina I want to thank Dick Bayles, Kevin Lechlitner, and The Board for careful consideration and the responsible steps in opening the tennis facility. I really appreciate that they not only took into consideration the safety of everyone but also the wellbeing and livelihood of the tennis and clubhouse staff. Opening in phases has been a big success. Beginning with singles and private lessons for the first few weeks. And just recently adding doubles and limited numbers in clinics. Their

approach shows responsibility and professionalism. We are so lucky to have them. I know other clubs took different steps to opening. I want to also thank our members for their patience and understanding with the process. Now that we are having more players on the courts, I urge everyone to remain diligent in maintaining the safety guidelines we have in place for the safety of our community while continuing to be able to provide an environment to keep you active and healthy. We a r e so lucky we live in paradise. Let’s be smart and continue to enjoy the sport we love so much. See you on the courts!

The birds and other assorted creatures are still enjoying the quiet pace of life that is provided in The Landings at all times, but especially during the precautions being taken to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopef ully, you’ve been enjoying nature even more these past few months. My favorite sightings over the last 3 months are the Roseate Spoonbill who flew overhead at my house around 4 PM for about 2 weeks i n April a nd the Florida softshell tortoise, who spent an hour in my backyard, digging about eight troughs and laying her eggs. Surf’s Up ,,, Have a seat  By Jane Bartnett Its official, surfboards have gone beyond the beach and right into coastal homes. One sure bet for adding that “Endless Summer” surfer vibe to your beach house, experts advise, is to add a surfboard to your decor. “A surfboard is a beach decor staple,” writes House Beautiful editor, Hadley Mendelsohn. Surfboards make a statement as wall art. They also make a great oneof-a-kind table that adds a touch of coastal whimsy to a home. Sarasota craftsman John Hendershott has been designing surfboard tables for the last 10 years and selling his unique designs to beach lovers from Florida to the Jersey shore and beyond. The co-owner of the new “Coastal Flow” store, on South Tamiami Trail, just off Siesta Key, designs and builds his custom crafted surfboard tables in his Bradenton woodshop. He sells his wares at his Sarasota shop and through his website, www.surfboardtables.com. A talented carpenter, expert woodworker and entrepreneur, Hendershott hadn’t always planned on adding the title of casual surfboard

table. He agreed to give it a try. Both were pleased with the finished product. Hendershott’s “Surfboard Tables” business was born. She encouraged him to design and build more surfboard themed tables. Then the question was, “where and how to sell them,” Hendershott recalled. “My sister, who also had her own business, felt that that there would be a strong market in coastal communities’ arts and crafts fair shows,” he John Hendershott and partner Jessica Gill said. Her instinct was right. After researching beachfurniture designer to his resume. When the Ohio native moved to the side art and arts and crafts festivals surfing community of Wilmington, up and down the East Coast where NC, in 2010, where his sister also he could exhibit and sell his wares, lived, he decided to put his car- Hendershott began building his pentry skills to work and build his tables at his North Carolina home. own house. When his sister came He would stash them in his van to visit, she noticed that he had and head off to display his wares hung an old surf board on his living at shoreside festivals. His travels room wall and liked the way that it took him as far north as Rehoboth looked. She asked if he could take a Beach, Delaware, and as far south surfboard, paint it, add an interest- as Sarasota. In 2018, when Hurricane Florence ing base, and make it into a coffee

caused extensive damage in the Carolinas, Hendershott had trouble finding festival venues. “Florida saved me,” he said. “I could only find art fairs and crafts festivals in Florida,” he said. “That year, at a fair in Vero Beach, I sold half my stock and then showed at a downtown arts festival in Sarasota where I sold the other half.” Hendershott decided to make Sarasota his new home. A year later, after meeting his partner Jessica Gill, the two continued to travel to festivals to show his work. As demand grew, life on the road began to lose its appeal. “It gets hard to be on the road all the time and we decided that the time was right to open our own store.” Custom Flow opened March 2020. With the store serving as a showroom for Hendershott’ s creations, as well as that of 15 other area artists, he has also designed a new line of surfboard bars. “They add a touch of the tropics to a lanai, patio or den,” says Gill. “I customize the design and color of each table. Every table is unique,” said Hendershott .

Hendershott’s wood surfboard tables are available in three sizes and numerous designs ranging from $1,499 to $499. A custom surf-board wood coffee table is also available for order at $299. “Polywood” customized surfboard tables built for outdoor use range from $1,499 to $699. As a nod to the many transplanted Sarasotans, nostalgic for their home state, Hendershott recently added a line of casual custom “State Tables.” The table top is designed in the outline of the buyer’s state. The legs are hand-carved letters that depict the state’s official abbreviation, such as NY for New York; NC for North Carolina; MI for Michigan. A line of lower priced gift items that include state and surfboard bottle openers and state wine glass holders are available for under $30. Hendershott’s tables are on display at his Coastal Flow store at 7216 Tamiami Trail. “It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you sit down at a surfboard table,” Hendershott said with a smile.

Fresh and perfect seasoning

We had the blackened snapper plate for lunch. So fresh with perfect char, seasoning and portions. Nice sides, good fresh coleslaw, not the usual seafood restaurant drippy white dressing over day old grated slaw. Also enjoyed 6 oysters on half shell for a great price. Hubby had clam chowder with tender, flavorful clams. Great value.

The New Now By Dee Ricapito

T he world h a s con st a nt ly changed since it was created and will continue to change! But, lots have changed quickly in recent months. We have all had to accept lifestyle changes. Will we happily accept them? Will we always live with the recent changes? Will we have choices? YES...the things we do matters! For example, I recently enjoyed a remote Zoom phone experience with my family members from north/south/east and west of us. Brick and mortar stores are not necessarily the only way to go shopping these days. Words that never existed before (Ebay or Amazon) etc... can get you anything you want or need thru your fingertips and fairly quickly. On a new normal next day, I completed a doctor’s visit on FaceTime, and a prescription was waiting for me at the pharmacy‌ another successful outcome. Times are ever changing, for example: conducting business meetings can be accomplished by Internet, phone, not necessarily

f rom a n office buildi ng. Communicating thru technology makes the world seem like it’s getting smaller‌ geography doesn’t matter anymore. Businesses will realize they don’t need big offices anymore. Employees working from home are equally productive and offers businesses significant savings. Worlds moving faster. Is this the New Nornal? And is it OK? Question yourself during/ after the quarantine: **Is this “new normalâ€? working for me today ‌ i.e. always being aware of others? **Am I getting outside today? **Am I exercising today? **Do I always carry a mask in my pocket? (to safeguard me and others). **Do I appreciate more and take less for granted during these and future trying time? Maya Angelou once said, “ Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space--invite one to stay.â€? This thought fits in with the “new normalâ€?.

Just for Laughs… Compiled by: Dee Ricapito Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they lit a fire in the kayak it sank, proving once again that you can’t have your kayak and heat it, too. A fellow went to the drug store and told the clerk, “Give me 3 packets of condoms, please.” The lady clerk asked, “Do you need a paper bag with that, sir?” He said, “Nah... She’s pretty good lookin’...”. A guy got caught taking a wizz in the swimming pool today. The lifeguard shouted at him so loud, the guy nearly fell in! A fellow walked into his favorite bar last night and saw a BIG woman dancing on a table and said, “Good legs”. The woman giggled and said, “Do you really think so?” He said, “Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now.” A blonde was necking in Lover’s Lane with her boyfriend.

Greene

She said “No”. So, he figured she wasn’t ready yet, and they kept kissing. Things got pretty hot and heavy, so he asked again, “Do you want to go in the back seat yet? For the second time she replied, “No”. Before long she was down to her underwear he asked again, and got the same “No” reply. Frustrated he asked, “why not”?

An old joke:

HOMES PENDING

Two women were having a conversation during lunch. “So, how’s your sex life these days?” one asked. “Oh, it’s the usual Social Security kind, her friend replied. “Social Security kind??” “Yeah, you get a little each month, but not enough to live on.”

Judy Tara

He thought he might get lucky and asked her if she wanted to climb in the back seat.

Montpelier, Vermont is the smallest state capital with only 7,500 residents. It also is the only state capital in the United States not to have a

McDonald’s. 8. The U.S. Mint estimates it cost approximately 1.7 cents per coin, today. 9. Following the Civil War, between a third and half of all cash in circulation was counterfeit. The U.S. Secret Service was originally created on July 5, 1865 to fight the counterfeiting epidemic. 10. Our current 50-star flag was designed as part of a high school project by 17-year old Robert Heff. It was 1958, and there were only 48 states at the time, but Heft had a hunch Hawaii and Alaska would soon be granted statehood. His teacher gave him a B- but went on to update the grade to an A after Heft submitted his design to the White House, eventually leading to a call from President Eisenhower that it had been selected as the official U.S. flag.
