Landings’ Volunteers Who Work For You

This is the fifth in a series of articles highlighting the work of special volunteers who help to make The Landings such a wonderful community. The Eagle interviewed David Osborn and Allison Taylor, Co-Chairs of the LMA Nature Trail Committee

Our community is blessed with talented residents who donate their time and expertise to The Landings community. David and Allison are prime examples. Both have brought their talents as engineers for the benefit of our community.

David worked in the oil and gas industry and currently works with Florida Power and Light. He received several engineering design awards while living in Texas and while working in several countries abroad. He currently is designing underground infrastructure for FPL to harden their capacity to withstand major storms such as the ones we have recently experienced in Florida.

Allison is also an engineer who started out in Houston in the oil and gas industry and later went into software and aerospace design. Prior to retirement she was involved in technology sales.

Both have been married previously and met each other in Houston where Allison was from originally.

David grew up in Rockford, Illinois. David has 5 children and 5 grandchildren from a previous marriage. He had visited Sarasota many years ago and enjoyed the fishing and West Florida lifestyle.

When they decided to move from Texas, in September of 2020, they looked at Naples and Sarasota and determined that they liked the small town feel with big town amenities that Sarasota offered. It was the biggest little town they had seen.

Allison said they wanted to avoid beach communities which were big spring break destinations. David, an avid fisherman, wanted to be close to the water. When

they saw The Landings, and the view from their new condo, they were hooked. They liked the charm of the community, its proximity to the beach, the security of a gated community, the gazebo fishing spot within walking distance, the wonderful landscaping and tropical feeling. They felt like The Landings was one big park. When asked why and how they got involved with LMA, Allison was quick to say that she had lived in a condo community before and knew that it was important to get involved. She joined the board of her Landings South VII Association and soon thereafter inquired as to how she and David could get involved with LMA. Then President, Norman Olshansky, appointed them as co-chairs of the nature trail committee and they got right to work.

Their first project was to repair and rebuild the bridge from the Treehouses to the Cloisters along the nature trail. David jumped right in, did the design work and together they hired a contractor to do the construction.

They also were able to expand the stairs at the gazebo to keep them from being under water at high tide. In addition, they added gravel to build up the trail in areas that frequently have tidal flooding. They expanded the number of kayak racks and have turned over the kayak committee to Jackie Massari.

They indicated that there is still some cleanup to do following Hurricane Ian and hopefully, a way to finally deal with the remaining flooding problems on the trail. They are looking forward to working with the Kayak committee to find a way to install a kayak launch and add new racks.

We are truly blessed to have two talented volunteer engineers who have devoted their time to enhance the nature trail for all of us to enjoy. They are committed to maintaining and enhancing the trail, which is one of our most prized assets in The Landings.

LMA Seeking Candidates for Board of Directors

Do you or someone you know, who owns property in The Landings, have an interest in helping the community prepare for the future and represent the interests of our residents. We have a wonderful community which has been under the excellent guidance of the LMA Board. This is your opportunity to make a difference.

This year there will be 5 of the 9 board positions up for election which takes place on February 2nd. To be considered, candidates must indicate their interest in running for election by December 10th. Contact Cali Lampton, Nominating Chairperson (941-266-1889 or email her at calilampton@gmail.com) for more information or to indicate your interest in being a candidate.

All candidates will have an opportunity to meet with and be interviewed by the association presidents on January 9th at 6 p.m.

Photos and bios of all the candidates will be published in the January Eagle

LMA Board members are elected by Association Presidents who each have a proportion of votes based on the size of their association.

All Hallows’ Eve was quite the party at The Landings this year. For more pictures from the event, go to pages 18 and 19.

President’s

As we recover from two hurricanes, we have much for which to the thankful.

The Landings Management Association clean-up is complete. The Landings was registered with the county for continued clean-up at the end of October because we are expected to give the county the authority or rightof-way to operate on our private roads. LMA received numerous e-mails of gratitude, such as one homeowner “we want to thank you for what we thought was a really well-organized response from LMA after Hurricane Ian. The updates are timely and valuable. We appreciate you!” Another “I want to extend our appreciation for your forethought and hiring this company to clean up after Ian. It was great to have this taken care of and get things looking back to normal.” And one last “you were out on Thursday morning assessing what had to be done to make roads passable. Action was required and it was attended to almost immediately. . .I just want to thank you for the courtesy and quick response your executives exhibited.” The chief reason that quick response was possible was due to the action of the ad hoc Emergency Committee. The Chairs for Lakes and Drainage, Security, Landscaping and Roads came together to respond. I am hopeful that the committee will endure and be ready to respond to any future events with the same quick response.

In case you missed it, LMA held its first-ever budget-focused Town Hall intended to demonstrate

a commitment to improved communication, on November 3rd. Due to the efforts of two of our board members, Sue Camins and John Schmidt, the Town Hall was hosted at the Sarasota School Board Conference Center. They conducted test Zoom meeting equipment and performance, down to how to align seating to optimize participation. Great effort was put into improving upon and facilitating participation both from in-person and Zoom attendees. The good news is that 62 people attended in-person and 44 people attended via Zoom, reflecting an interest in the discussion of the budget. After nearly a twohour exchange, the Town Hall adjourned.

During the following board meeting, the budget was approved. Provisions about how security funds would be used were discussed. A security study to assess current needs and existing services was entertained. It appears likely that the study will be conducted.

It’s that time of year again, when the board revitalizes itself through an election process culminating in elections on Feb 2nd. Candidates are being sought and recruited to volunteer for numerous roles in our neighborhood. As you likely know, The Landings has a wealth of very accomplished neighbors who contribute in various ways to make our community home. Please consider joining the cadre of volunteers. Cali Lampton is Chairing the Nominating Committee. Joining her are Sue and Harvey Camins, Jane Carpenter, and Amy Drachman.

SAVE THE DATE: The Meet the Candidates event is scheduled for Jan 9th. Due to the success of meetings at the School Board Conference Center, the Communications Committee is working to host the meeting there. Association Presidents will have an opportunity to interview the candidates on behalf of their members. Members are welcome to attend in the audience.

LMA Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger began the meeting by announcing the following during the president’s report:

• The minutes of the last LMA Meeting were presented, but because not everyone saw them, their approval was deferred. A suggestion was made by a board member the minutes be circulated within four days of the meeting to facilitate a better recollection of important business.

• A special “Town Hall” meeting to discuss the budget was held before this regularly scheduled Board Meeting.

• The treasurer’s report is being tabled until Harvey Greller arrives.

ROADS

Committee Chairman, Elida Ramberger reported the committee has maintained communications with Stantec Consulting Service, Inc. The request of bid proposals is being explored from construction companies and are expected to be in this January. This process was deferred until then because only one bid proposal was received. What impact, if any, the hurricane will have on this process is unknown at this time will not be known until bids are solicited and received. They are considering reducing the bid burden for contractors by allowing them to provide the cost for the contract and not an entire bid package until the committee selects the contractor. Then the contractor selected would write their entire bid package.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communications Chair, John Schmidt reported changing the meeting site to facilitate a better communications experience for all involved and for those who join the meeting on Zoom. He briefly discussed some of the challenges of having the meeting at the Landing’s Racquet Club. Schmidt mentioned the board is obligated by documents to ensure everyone attending the meeting in person or electronically can hear.

LAKES/DRAINAGE

Committee chair, Jeff Smith reported on two environmental developments. First, Sarasota County approved the use of native shrubs and other plantings to remediate Starling Lake (7) instead of trees. Finances already approved, will be spent on the plantings and the removal of invasive and nuisance plants over the coming months. Secondly, a $4,000 grant will be used to purchase aquatic plants. The project will likely be started in January.

HURRICANE RESPONSE

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger reported Proper Cut Tree Care cleared all Landing’s roads by Thursday evening, the day after the Hurricane and continues cleanup. Several residents also hired them to clean up their properties. The Landings Homeowners Association has offered financial support of the hauling fee which was $100,000 and county landfill fees of $13,000. These fees are being paid out of

retained earnings.

An Emergency Committee was formed to determine a work task list to be done following the hurricane. Phone and internet communications were all down. A standing Emergency Committee may need to be formed moving forward. A list of preferred vendors for emergencies may also need to be determined. Future budgets may need reserves for emergencies as the cleanup expenses were high. Pinnacle is expected to help the board look at insurance options of directors and officers.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger reminded everyone that Nominating Committee Chair, Cali Lampton is still seeking potential board members from residents of the community.

NEW MANAGEMENT

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger announced the relationship with Pinnacle Management Association has been a great experience so far and they have great plans for the future.

BUDGET DISCUSSION AND VOTE

A board member recommended deferring for three months, the added security detail from the budget based on a recommendation from the Safety and Security Committee. During that period a comprehensive survey of security issues could be done with the assistance of Pinnacle. It was recommended to amend the budget removing the $73,000 expense for the added security detail. A discussion of security issues continued which included the following:

• The Traffic Hawk System

• Regularly broken gate arms

• Managing golf cart issues

• Automobile entry decal issues

• Liability issues

• Installing more secure entry gates

• A professional security survey

A motion was made to approve the budget as presented with the board option to either utilize certain funds for security or determine it’s not necessary. After some discussion the motion passed 5-3.

SPECIAL ASSESSMENT

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger reported the Special Assessment Notices of $5,000 went out. The same notices will go out a second time. The payment process will be decided by the board after another Town Hall Meeting.

Concerns were raised about some residents not getting email notices. A discussion of existing email lists took place. The board is currently trying to coordinate each existing list into Mail Chimp and then into Neighbor.

The next LMA Board meeting will be held in the School Board building on Thursday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m.

Triple Tennis Social a Swinging Good Time By

We held our first of many First Friday Triples Tennis Social Mixer on Friday afternoon on November 4 at the Racquet Club. Many tennis clubs are now hosting triples tennis events, which are more social, faster moving and more accepting of varied skill levels. It has even been sanctioned as a competitive event by the USTA!

We had a great turnout of 30 people spread across four courts, with an efficient court rotation of five rounds each, where each game was 15 points. Court rotations were written down on cards, which allowed us to move quickly through our rotations. About 25+ people stayed for the after party on the coffee patio, enjoying beer, camaraderie, and making new friends. What a fun afternoon, even the weather was perfect!

A huge thanks to our triples ball feeders John Fournier, Tommy George, Lee Hall Delfausse and George Ulrich for taking their personal time to support this event, so that no one had to serve! Tennis Committee member George Ulrich did a great job as master organizer of this event, with help from Neil Goldman to create balanced team matchups. You may not know, but George is a Tennis Director from Lyme Shores Tennis Club in CT and is in the USTA New England Hall of Fame!

Our next Triples Social Mixer is Friday, December 2nd, starting at 3:30 p.m. Signups will be posted at LRC two weeks prior with a max of 30 participants, and it fills up fast. If you sign up, please be sure to attend or notify George that you are sending a sub, so we can keep teams balanced. We generally hold these events on the first Friday of the month in high season, so please come and join the fun!

As the Andy Williams song goes, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The holidays are fast approaching, the stores are busy with shoppers and we’re planning our festivities and meals. In general, people seem to be in a better mood in the month of December. I know I am.

On the pro tour, the women’s WTA Finals were held in Fort Worth, Texas with Caroline Garcia of France winning the season ending tournament of the top 8 players in woman’s tennis. If you’ve not watched Caroline play tennis, she’s had a wonderful resurgence in her

aggressive net charging game.

By the time you read this article, the men’s ATP Finals will have finished in Turin, Italy. As with the WTA Finals,

Last month, the LRC hosted the USTA National Father/Son Clay Court Championships for the 29th year. We had another good turnout for the tournament. A total of 58 signed up to play which tied the record. Sadly, a few teams had to withdraw due to injury or illness before it started. In comparison, the largest combined draws of the other two national championships had a total of 41 teams.

Superb tennis as teams try to win the coveted “gold ball”, signifying a USTA National Championship.

You might wonder, who has the most “gold balls”? The late Dorothy “Dodo” Cheney who won 394 of them, the last one at the age of 94. Holy Donkeys, that’s a lot of tournament wins.

The male tennis player with the most gold balls is the late Gardner Mulloy with 100, who said after earning his 100th

This season we will introduce some different, yet very popular games that are played around the world. Some of you will not enjoy all the different games we try. But if you have the right mind set you can have a good time and keep your body and brain active while trying to problem solve on the court.

Our event has been the largest national championship in the Senior, Super Senior and Ultra Senior divisions since 2012. A big part of that is how friendly and welcoming our membership is to the players. The ambassadors that the Club provides adds a personal touch that the players don’t receive anywhere else. Thank you to everyone that took part and especially to Ralph and Dee Ricapito for organizing all the ambassadors. Thanks again for your help in making this a special tournament for all the participants.

I am happy to announce we have a new exercise class to offer. Magdalena de Poel will be teaching a Core & Mobility class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. beginning November 30th. This class is geared to increasing abdominal core strength as well as maintaining and perhaps increasing range of mobility. Most suitable for participants with

DJ Karolina is back to provide the entertainment again. The menu specifics are posted in the Tennis Pro Shop with the signup sheet. The cost is $35 per person. It is limited to the first 100 people signed up so don’t delay!

You should be receiving your annual assessment mailing very soon if it hasn’t arrived already. For your convenience, we have included a return envelope in the mailing. If you haven’t received it by early December, please contact me in the Tennis Pro Shop. The annual assessment is due on or before January 1st and will be considered late on February 1st. To avoid late fees and interest, please be sure your payment arrives before the end of January. Also, please don’t combine your monthly statement and the annual assessment in the same check. Thank you!

Most of the participants really enjoyed the game of triples. Don’t forget that in most team sports you don’t always get to touch the ball. But the key is knowing how to move without the ball. Proper positioning creates pressure on the other team and less pressure on your teammate. Also, what’s important in team sports is if you are a positive energy teammate. Can you get your teammates to enjoy being out there with you because you are creating a fun positive atmosphere whether you are winning or losing? That’s what the best players understand about doubles and triples.

The next game we are introducing is college football tennis on Friday, December 9th in our social round robin from 2-3:30 p.m.

Here is how it’s played: This is a doubles game but with football scoring. You and your partner pick the college football team that you would like to represent. The other team you will play does the same. It’s even more fun if you are dressed in the logos and colors of the college you are representing.

We’ve all had a chance to see how great the stucco looks on our buildings. It really does improve the look but also eliminates our ongoing repairs to the wood rot. We’ll be painting the buildings in the next few weeks now that the stucco has “cured”. Next year we’ll be painting the interior of the fitness center as well as putting down new flooring in the gym. This will be a great improvement to our club.

first. Winner of the coin toss serves first.

Servers = Offense Receivers = Defense

Before you serve, you must declare if you are going for a touchdown or a field goal.

Touchdown = 3 consecutive winning points = 7 points scored Field Goal = 2 consecutive winning points = 3 points scored

Every time the offense loses a point, the defense then becomes the offense and serves. (In other words, every time the serving team loses the point, the other team gets to serve.)

Offense always declares touchdown or field goal before they serve. If the serving team (offense) declares a touchdown and wins two points but loses point 3, they do not get points for a field goal since they declared they were going for touchdown.

Play for 25 minutes and when time is up, the highest scoring team wins. Winning teams then rotate to play one another, and losing/learning teams play against one another.

I think that this game will help you focus and improve your intensity because if your team declares that you are trying to score a touchdown, usually in tennis it’s not that easy to win three points in a row. This will help you to focus on hitting more high percentage shots so that you make fewer consecutive errors.

The pro exhibition is from 3:30-5 p.m. after this social round robin.

See you on the courts

We have “Wish Lists” from each child to help you make the purchases. We also have volunteer shoppers if you would prefer to write a check to support our program. You can bring

a check to the Landings Racquet Club in an envelope addressed to LHCF or go to our website (www. LandingsHolidayCharitableFoundation. org) and contribute online.

Join us by lining up on Landings Blvd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to welcome the kids from the Children’s Cancer Center as they drive by with siblings and parents to pick up their holiday gifts at the LRC. We will not be in close contact with the children because many are in active treatment and need to protect

themselves from germs.

If you are interested in being and elf along the path to the LRC, greeting families, waving to them in festive holiday attire, contact us. Holiday blowups are great along the way.

This event is possible because of the generosity of our community and their willingness to share their good fortune and love. Spread the word of how you have helped make a child’s holiday brighter!

Get friends and family out of the house by bringing them to Simon’s to sample a breakfast and lunch menu full of delicious vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore options. Fair warning, though. It’s possible you may find yourself

ordering off Simon’s menu for holiday meals. Yes, they’re that good.

Whatever your holiday season brings, your friends at Simon’s Coffee House wish you a joyous time and a prosperous and happy new year.

THE PHOTO SHOP: Street Photography

Street photography is one of the earliest photographic genres, dating back to the late 19th century and reaching its apogee in the 1950s and 60s. Robert Doisneau, long considered one of the early “masters” of the genre, is known for having influenced many of the great street photographers that dominated the scene in New York, Paris, and other urban centers during the 20th century… photographers like Cartier Bresson (pioneer of the “humanistic” approach to photography), Helen Levitt (known for her fleeting yet humorous color images of urban life), Andre Kertesz (whose work was featured in magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue), and Lee Friedlander (creator of some of the more alien-looking social landscapes).

All the street photographers mentioned above were shooting film at the time (digital cameras did not appear until much later). The camera of choice back then was the Leica 35 mm, and the film of choice, Kodak’s Tri-X black and white film, although there were some who experimented with color, shooting primarily slides using Kodachrome film. Others preferred shooting with larger format cameras like the Rolleiflex or the medium format Haselblads or MamiyaSecors. In today’s digital world, the Leica has seen itself replaced by the Fuji X100 as the camera of choice, although the Fuji XT-3s and 4s are very good, less expensive options.

The Leica M series cameras are still around, and I would recommend them along with the Ricoh GR, Canon EOS R and Nikon Z series cameras, all excellent options. Optimal lens range should be between 14 to 85 mm, although this can vary. Surprisingly, some of the latest phones like the IPhone 14 and the Samsung 22 have incredible built-in cameras that will do in a pinch, although I don’t recommend them for low light

situations.

So, what is “street photography,” and what makes a good street photograph? In the simplest of terms, street photography is a photographic genre that records everyday activities in public spaces. While I could talk about this subject forever, in the interest of space, I will limit myself here to five essential characteristics that define this genre. (1) Street photography must be innovative and creative. You need to focus on the details. Keep in mind that you are creating a work of art that captures a fleeting yet eternal moment in time. (2) Street photography is honest and sincere. It comes from the heart. It should not look “contrived”. (3) It strives to be aesthetic. Your photo should be framed and well composed. (4) It conveys a message or a feeling. This is often referred to as the “human” or “humanistic” element of street photography. (5) It often focuses on a single subject and/or on the interaction between that subject and the photographer or that subject and another subject in the photo. Although people are generally the subjects of street photography, their presence is not required. A hint or suggestion that someone is there, might be there, or has been there, is all that is necessary.

This month’s column of The Photo Shop features the works of five Landings photographers: Jeff Packman, Robert Manteiga, Rick Waller, Heidi Anderson, and Norman Olshansky. I won’t say who shot which photos, but there are hints in the subject matter of each of the photos that should give you a relatively good idea.

The January issue will be dedicated to “forms and structures,” so, if you have any photographs that meet these criteria, start sending them to me at roberto@uri. edu.

BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN THE SARASOTA AREA BY FAR! FRESH, FLAVORFUL, PERFECTLY PREPARED FOOD. BE BACK NEXT YEAR!

“This is a small family run restaurant and the owners are onsite there. The owners and staff are friendly and welcoming. The service is great, but the food is phenomenal ! We had the blackened grouper, crab cakes and fish stew. It was seasoned and prepared perfectly! We found it because we were looking a place to eat after a movie, and if we hadn’t looked for reviews on TripAdvisor we would never have found it. It’s in a small plaza in the back corner and does not stand out. It was 45 minutes from where we were staying but it was so good we had to go back again. Each of the last 3 years we have stayed for 2 months on longboat key and this was the best seafood restaurant we’ve been to, hands down! It was nice to meet the owner who it turns out was from the town next to us in Connecticut. You must try it, but I would recommend reservations at dinner time as it’s a small place.”

Earl Tomkins: An Athlete for the Ages Graces The Landings’ Courts

Earl Tomkins is a sports legend. Not one to brag about his many accomplishments and honors, The Landings resident has been celebrated and recognized throughout his adult life for his many accomplishments as a pro baseball player, top amateur tennis player, and for his service to the youth of the city of Buffalo,.

Growing up in the ‘40s and ‘50s as a boy in Buffalo, baseball, basketball and football were Earl’s life. While playing college baseball at the University of Buffalo as a second baseman and short stop, professional baseball scouts spotted the talented young star and recruited him for the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Earl played three seasons of minor league baseball for the Jamestown Dodgers, the Batavia Trojans, and the AAA Pacific Coast League. When the United States Army came calling with a draft notice of its own, his dream of playing pro ball came to an end. It was 1968 and the Vietnam War was raging.

“That took care of my major league baseball career,” said Earl. After serving in the Army Reserves, Earl became a teacher and middle school counselor in the Buffalo school system. His wife, Susie, whom he had met when he played baseball in Jamestown, New York, taught high school French. The couple settled in the suburban Buffalo community of Williamsville, where they raised two sons. Married for 51 years, the couple splits their time between The Landings and their upstate New York home.

As Earl settled into his educational career, he spent several years coaching baseball at the University of Buffalo. “Then,” he recalled, “I got into tennis.”

At age 30, his old friend Billy Gallagher introduced him to the game.

“He clinched it right away,” said Susie, a tennis player herself. Added Earl, “Being a second baseman gave me good hand-eye coordination.”

Tennis became Earl’s game. The former pro athlete honed his skills rapidly and the game welcomed him with open arms.

“Tennis is a sport that you can start at any age,” Earl noted, and Susie agreed. Over the years, Earl played in competitive tennis tournaments at many United States Tennis Association (USTA) events, including two National USTA

Championships.

In 1997, Earl became active in the Buffalo Police Athletic League (PAL) and created the “Raging Racquets” tennis program that introduced thousands of Buffalo kids to the sport. During his 25

years with the organization, his work benefitted thousands of boys and girls ranging in age from 6 to 16. On Sept. 17, 2021, he day that Earl retired from the PAL, Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown presented Earl with an official proclamation that recognized his 25 years of service to the children of Buffalo. During the ceremony, Mayor Brown proclaimed “Earl Tomkins Day in the city of Buffalo.”

“As we recognize Earl Tomkins here today,” the proclamation read, “let us offer our gratitude to him for the myriad of contributions he has made to the city of Buffalo youth. Earl has encouraged and inspired generations of youth

to achieve success as students, athletes and community members. He has helped them recognize nothing is out of their reach if they work hard to achieve their goals.

“For nearly 25 years Earl did more than offer tennis instruction, He nurtured, counseled and even challenged young minds in a fun and welcoming manner, loving every minute of interacting with wide-eyed and enthusiastic young students. Earl has encouraged and inspired generations of youth to achieve success as students, athletes and community members. He has helped them realize that nothing is out of their reach if they work hard to achieve their goals.”

The Buffalo proclamation was yet another tribute that Earl has quietly added to his many other accolades, including his induction into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame.

A year after retiring from the Buffalo PAL, tennis continues to be Earl’s focus. When asked if the couple enjoy playing together in casual mixed doubles matches, Earl shook his head no.

Susie quickly added, “Earl is a much better player. He’s a 4.5.”

For Earl, tennis is serious business. As avid tennis players know, a 4.5 USTA tennis rating signifies a very strong amateur player. According to the USTA, a player with a 1.5 rating is considered a beginner. A 7.0 player could turn pro.

Although Earl is no longer traveling to USTA national tournaments, on most days he can be found on the courts at The Landings. Susie splits her time between The Landings’ eight har-tru courts and the Payne Park Tennis Center in downtown Sarasota.

Earl plays doubles in the USTA League Tennis, men’s 70s and 80s divisions. The Landings teams compete against other Sarasota regional teams and travel as far away as Bradenton.

When Earl Tomkins takes the court at The Landings, a USTA national tennis legend has arrived. A great game of tennis is about to be played.

It’s been three long Covid years since the last show and I am sure many people want to see what you have created during this time. We also have new ideas for the show including the show will be only one day. During that day, we are also planning to set aside 2 or 3 short periods of time during which we can have either a slide presentation or if we can find someone to help create a short video. We are in the process of finding out how to integrate these elements into the show.

The artists are asked to be

present at the show during the opening hours. More details to come later.

The Thursday Art Studio at the Lakeside Room is up and running.

The writing workshop, Lovers of Words lead by Lee Hall Delfausse, will be offered again on Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m. at the Poolside Room, starting January 4. It will run for 12 weeks. If interested, contact Lee Hall Delfausse immediately to sign up as the group is limited (8-10 participants). You can mail Lee at ADIN276@aol.com.

Last, but not least, The Landoliers have resumed rehearsal on Tuesday afternoons from 3-4:30 p.m. All interested to participate are welcome to join. If you like to sing, even it is only in the shower, come join the chorus, they need more singers.

The end of the season concert will take place in March. Exact date will be announced at a later time.

Holiday Gift Guide: Perfect Presents for Every Pup

Here we are again: the most wonderful time of the year!

Time to celebrate with family and, of course, our favorite furry friends. Has your special pup made their wish list yet? No? Well, not to worry, because we’ve got exactly the suggestions you need to make it the best holiday season yet.

Let’s get started!

Cozy Christmas Cuddles

When temperatures drop and the days are short, giving the comfort of soft and warm blankets and toys is always a hit.

Tall Tails offers plush toys and products, from extra soft blankets and beds to squeeze toys and even bath towels that will keep your canine cozy and often busy. If you need to hold their interest and stay even busier during the hustle and bustle, SodaPup serves up chews and enrichment toys that will keep them occupied and help them relax over the hectic holidays.

Sweet Holiday Treats

Speaking of something to munch on, one of the best things about the holidays is the food! Let your dog indulge a bit with a special treat or two (or more). Brands like Earth Animal, Einstein Pets, and Bocce Bakery offer scores of options that will have your dog drooling with delight.

Of course, if you’ve got time, there’s nothing like a homemade treat to show your love.

Whether you’re baking up something special or introducing them to one of these great products, seasonal snacks are sure to keep them satisfied — just like you — during the festivities.

Make a Memory

Puppy presents don’t just have to be something they can chew, chase, or chill out with. Let’s face it: with as much wear and tear as those gifts get, they don’t last like a memory. Commemorate the occasion this year with some fun

photography. This can come in the form of a photo of your dog or you and your pup together in a card or frame. If you want to go big, you can even schedule a special session with a local pro or grab a seasonal snap on a visit with the big guy himself, Santa! Great photos make memories that last a lifetime.

Spread the Love

All pups need to be shown affection, especially during the holidays. That’s why the season of giving is also a great time to give back and share the love you have for dogs with those less fortunate.

Reach out to your local shelter to see how you can help. Monetary donations are always welcome and go a long way, but often shelters will have a list of needs — like beds, blankets, toys, or treats — that you can help them fill. Even better, you can also give the gift or your time.

If you can, ask your shelter about volunteer opportunities or even serving as a foster pet parent or family during the holidays.

For all the love they give us throughout the year, this season, find a way to celebrate your favorite pups at home and in your community.

Happy Holidays!

Going to the Dogs

My name is Kip. I am named after the famous poet Rudyard Kipling who wrote that wonderful poem If. My middle name is Lincoln who Katy calls a most sensible president. I will be 11 on Dec. 20 this year!

I was born at Marchwind Farms in Vienna, Georgia and have lived happily in The Landings for 11 years with my best friend and owner, Katy Leidel.

If I get the opportunity to run, I clock about 25 mph. No driver in The Landings should try to outdo me as that might be a serious issue.

My Italian greyhound breed has existed for about 2,000 years! We were a favorite in the ancient city of Pompeii. Many relics found in Italy show my breed as the only pet dog for centuries.

My ancestors lived in royal palaces just like Queen Elizabeth’s beloved Corgis! I, unlike those Corgis, am bilingual, however.

I rather enjoy living in my humble abode enjoying a delicious bowl of pasta, a lovely Chianti and snuggling with my favorite hooman, Katy.

Ciao, and text me if you want to race!

Text Karen at 941-855-0347 for your interview and photo shoot.

Mama G.’s Now Open on South Tamiami Trail

One of our areas favorite German Bakery and Coffeehouses has settled into the former Bavarian Bread Shop just southwest of The Landings. The good news is Mama G.’s is still making the special Artisan bread we’ve all come to enjoy for years. Some popular breads are the multigrain, light wheat, rye, sourdough, and cranberry walnut. However, she is now tempting us with some of her special old country pastry recipes, too. Her apple strudel, apricot and cream cheese tarts are ones you’ll order time and time again.

Another delightful addition you won’t want to miss is something warm this season from her coffee selection. Be sure to order up an Espresso with a tasty seasonal flavoring, it’s the perfect complement to one of her pastry confections.

This family owned and operated bakery has extended hours Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Located at 5900 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota 34231, phone 941-926-2692 or visit online at www.Mamagscoffee.com.

LHA Meeting Notes

The Landings Homeowners Association held its regularly scheduled board meeting on November 10 at 5:00 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club.

The board approved landscape changes on Landings Terrace and Peregrine Point Drive. It also approved tree removals on Pine Harrier Circle, Peregrine Point Circle E and Peregrine Point Circle N.

The board approved a budget for calendar/fiscal year 2023 that calls for

an increase in the Annual Assessment by $100.00 for a total of $300.00. It is expected to stay at that level for 2024 to fully restore an increased Storm Reserve of $60,000 and improve the Association’s balance sheet.

The next regular meeting is at 5:00 p.m. December 8 in the Poolside Room at the Landings Racquet Club. If an owner wishes to attend the meeting, advance notice is requested (via e-mail to whitman@cs.com) with the topic to be discussed.

President’s Report

Much discussion and controversy surround the upcoming vote for a special assessment. In August the Finance Committee recommended that “there should be a special assessment specific to balancing the road reserve during the first quarter of 2023.” Based on that recommendation, the board will follow the recommendation and

seek a special assessment. Said assessment was scheduled to be the topic for the Town Hall meeting on Nov 29th during which the Stantec Engineer was scheduled to again present the analysis of our roads and present recommendations regarding restoration. The presentation was posted to the LMA website in October 2021, when it was first presented.

Bacon Wrapped Dates: A Holiday treat

Sara Rhodes says: The Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation adds sweetness to children at the holidays and sweetness to your next gathering. Her bacon wrapped dates are a yummy appetizer and you can’t stop eating just one!

Ingredients: 20 pitted dates 10 slices of bacon cut in half (Not thick slices)

Optional variations: Maple syrup, goat cheese, almond

Directions: Preheat oven to 400*

Wrap the date in a half slice of bacon, secure with a toothpick then bake for about 30 minutes until bacon is crisp; turn after about 15 minutes to cook bacon evenly.

A tasty variation includes brushing bacon with maple syrup before putting in the oven. Other variations include stuffing date with goat cheese or an almond.

If you stuff with goat cheese, cut date in half lengthwise on one side before wrapping with bacon.

Enjoy the holidays!

Just For Laughs

Becoming a “Kick-Ass 100-Year-Old” way after you retire

A reporter was interviewing a 103-year-old woman. “And what do you think is the best thing about being 103?” the reporter asked. She simply replied, “No peer pressure.”

Girl: My grandfather lived for 96 years, and he never used glasses.

Boy: Yeah, I know a few people who drink directly from the bottle.

Top 10 perks of being over 100…

1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.

2. In a hostage situation, you are likely to be released first.

3. No one expects you to run — anywhere.

4. A retiree’s bedtime is two hours after falling asleep on the couch.

5. People call at 9 p.m. and ask, “Did I wake you?”

6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

7. Things you buy now won’t wear out.

8. You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.

9. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them either.

10. The biggest advantage of going back to school —if you cut class, no one calls your parents.
