Your new board experienced a very informative orientation that included information on State HOA regulations, board governance, responsibilities, operations and LMA Organizational Structure. In addition, there were reports about each committee, their scope of as well as current/future challenges and opportunities. We also provided an extensive tutorial on our financials, budget, and website. Board members signed and acknowledged that they have read and understand our conflict of interest, code of ethics and whistle blower policies. Several volunteers have taken on new committee chairmanships. We look forward to their input and recommendations. All of our standing committees and chairs were listed in last month’s Eagle. BTW: You can access past issues of the Eagle on the LMA website. I want to thank our new board members and committee chairs who have already developed proposals for ways to improve our community and support the needs of our residents. Speeding continues to be a problem. At our last board meeting, we banned a guest of a resident, who had multiple speeding violations, from driving into The Landings for a month. The resident with whom they visited was notified. They can still walk into The Landings at the front gate,

or be picked up and brought in by a resident. However, they will not be allowed to drive into The Landings. We partnered with Sarasota Bay Watch on a project on March 21 to help with the cleanup of Phillippi Creek. I’m pleased to report that we have filled the vacant maintenance position. Teddy Fox, who has been doing work for individual homeowners, has taken on this position following the tragic death of David Jacaruso, our previous vendor. If you notice problems with signage, trash on roads, dead animals, or other maintenance needs on LMA property, please let Ron Pierce know. He is the chair of the maintenance committee and will be assigning tasks to Teddy Fox. A contract for the engineering study of our roads has been signed and work will begin soon.

The study will provide us with information regarding repaving of all of our roads, overall cost, and design. With this information the board can determine how soon we will be able to complete work on roads in The Landings. I want to give a special shout out to Gary Gurnov. He took on the treasurer’s position from Dick Bayles, who has held that position for years and did an outstanding job. Gary has truly gotten a handle on the treasurer’s position and has already provided significant and helpful insights. He formed his committee which has met and has made several suggestions that will improve our financial operations. A new committee headed by Mike Knupp will be exploring the feasibility of engaging an overall facilities/maintenance manager. As our community ages, we are experiencing increasing issues with lakes, drainage, landscaping, etc. that require hands on oversight, which is now provided by volunteers. No decisions have been made. The committee will study the need and bring back recommendations to the board for consideration. Gary Kurnov has been authorized to reconvene a kayak committee to explore operational issues and costs for LMA to provide kayak and board racks for residents. His committee will conduct due diligence and report

back to the board with their recommendations. I was surprised and concerned when it was reported that there were several acts of vandalism in The Landings last month. Signs were defaced or knocked over. As the saying goes, “if you see something, say something”. Please report incidents to security at the front gate. We apologize that it is taking so long to find a vendor to repair the bridge behind the Cloisters, leading into the Treehouses on the nature trail. It is a safety hazard and should be avoided. Please do not use the bridge or cross over private property. If you reach the bridge, please turn around and return via the nature trail. Starting with our April board meeting, we would like for all board members and others who attend in person, to bring tablets or laptops and participate by Zoom. This will hopefully eliminate the feedback problems we have experienced with the use of microphones and central sound systems. All others will continue to join by Zoom. Our meetings are on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm. We encourage you to join our board meetings by zoom and be involved in our wonderful community. Please continue to follow Covid safety recommendations. Hopefully, we can return to normal activity in the near future.

E l l e n We s t e r m a n n w a s e njoy i ng he r work a s a n e x c e p t io n a l c e l l i s t f o r t h e Metropolitan Opera orchestra in New York City during the 2019/2020 season when, out of the blue, early in the year, some colleagues started coming down with pneumonia. There were no Covid tests at the time so noone suspected anything ominous. Then, one colleague d ied of compl icat ion s a f ter being diagnosed with Covid-19. You can imagine how this sent shockwaves through the arts and entertainment community i n Ne w York C it y. S h or t ly thereafter, everything closed dow n. Al l t he musicia n s of the orchestra were furloughed without pay and without hope to get their jobs back in the foreseeable future. In fact, New York City and the whole country shut down. Ellen, a 26-year veteran at t he orchest ra a nd l iv i ng i n Ma n h at t a n, fou nd hersel f i s ol at e d i n h e r ap a r t m e nt, wondering what she should or could do. She had considered retiring within two or three years, so she decided that this was the right moment to do so. She had previously visited Sarasota, often vacationing on Longboat Key. She had even gone house hunting for a friend

at The Landings the year before. She remembered looking at one of the Tree Houses and, to her delight, it was still available. This was not something she needed to think about for too long as living in the confinement of her Manhattan apartment was quickly losing its appeal. So, she moved in last October and is enjoying how The Landings community has welcomed her. Ellen comes from a family of musicians and performers. Her mother was a singer and her father a professor of music, a pianist, and conductor. As a child, she started playing the violi n, but because she was tall and had long fingers, her mother told her to play the cello instead. Her father often accompanied her on the piano a nd let her play i n some of his concerts. She entered the Julliard School of Music at the age of twelve and stayed there through college resulting in a master’s degree. After several auditions, she joined the New Jers ey Sy mphony orc he st ra for a couple of yea rs. T hen she played for the American Ballet Orchest ra, wh ich she still does to this day. She then joined the Metropolitan Opera O r c he st ra. She a l so pl ayed chamber music and did studio Continued on page 20

To those of you in The Landings who volunteer to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels at you own expense and/or have donated funds toward the 250,000 meals provided annually in Sarasota County, we offer a resounding thank you. What could be more worthwhile than providing for those who are vulnerable, homebound, physically and mentally impaired, recovering from illness or surgery, and nutritionally challenged. The community’s ready response to the needs of Meals on Wheels even during the pandemic and recent difficult times, the program has been able to provide not only food, but through our LIFELINE project, has also been able to provide personal items, cleaning supplies, deliveries, and even pet food for those whose pets are in some cases their only source of companionship. However, because of this difficult year, the request for meals has doubled and has drained our financial reserves. Meals on Wheels has never said,” No,” to those who are unable to pay. Since Meals on Wheels is an independent charity and does not receive federal funding as it serves a 360-square mile area from Bradenton to Nokomis, we lean on you, our community, to share your resources with your neighbors in crisis so that they will not miss their only meal of the day. LMA Meeting Notes LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky began the Zoom meeting by announcing the following during his president’s report: • Olshansky thanked board members for at tendi ng t he boa rd orientat ion meeting. Learning board responsibilities is valuable to providing good governance for all residents of The Landings. • He thanked all who accepted new committee chairmanships. Names of all board members, committees and chairman were listed in the March Eagle. • Speeding continues to be a problem. A decal suspension issue is going to be brought to the board. • Several proposals to improve The Landings community have been brought forth by new and existing committee members. • All board members were provided three documents to sign which included a conflict of interest policy, a code of ethics policy and a whistle blower policy. • Olshansky announced Teddy Fox was hired to fill the vacant maintenance position. Many in The Landings are fa m i l i a r w it h h i s work . Re fe r a ny mai ntena nce needs to Mai ntena nce Committee chairman Ron Pierce. • Special thanks were given to Gary Kurnov for accepting the treasurer’s position previously held by Dick Bayles. • Seeking higher quality meetings, Olshansky recommended everyone join the zoom meeting on their laptops or tablets.

FINANCE REPORT

New treasurer, Gary Kurnov reported on finances for the month of January 2021. Income and expenses came within $100 of budget. Net income was a net positive $130 versus a budget of $0. Two items exceeding budget were accounted to landscaping and fountain m a i nten a nce. T hese were of fset by several items that were under budget. The drainage/irrigation project on Kest ral Pa rk Ter race is expected to cost an estimated $34,000. The finance committee is recommending the expense be paid using the Lakes and Drainage reserve. Vendor invoices and payments is an additional concern of the committee. This issue could precipitate the loss of out st a nd i ng vendors. A more efficient streamlined process of invoice subm ission was discussed with the board.

MANAGERS REPORT

Landing’s Manager, Steve Brockenshire reported the following: • Brockenshire announced he was so impressed with the board orientation that he mentioned it to upper management at Argus. Argus will now recommend a similar orientation to all their Board of Directors particularly to their new board

members. • Bids are still being sought to address t h e g a z eb o a nd p e de st r i a n b r idg e challenges along the Nature Trail. • Fi n a nce compa n ies a re now requesting more detailed information in order to consider refinancing requests by residents. They are requesting not on ly association insurance policies, b ut a l s o L M A i n s u r a n c e p ol i c i e s. Brockenshire has been streamlining this new procedure.

ROADS

An engineering proposal to determine what must be done regarding the repaving of all remaining roads has been received. The bid for the engineering is $78,000. This will help the Board determine a paving schedule moving forward. A motion was made to approve the $78,000 engineering proposal. The motion passed. Additional discussion will take place at a later date. Concer n s about pedest ria n sa fet y were brought to the attention of LMA President Norm Olshansky recently. The most vulnerable spots for pedestrian safet y have been noted. Changes to existing structures would be addressed in the design phase likely to begin in July. Safer walkways for pedestrians and bikers is being considered.

KAYAKS

A La ndi ng’s Kayak/Paddle Boa rd program was researched and discussed a couple years ago. Renewed interest has emerged in the possibility of installing Kayak racks near the Gazebo. LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky authorized Gary Kurnov to form a committee to look into Kayak options.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Speeding continues to be one of the biggest challenges of safety and security. The committee noticed an increase in speeding by both vendors and guests as this group accounted for 70% of speeding violations. Residents are reminded to speak to their guests or vendors about violations and let them know any further v iolat ion s m ay proh ibit t hem f rom driving into The Landings. • PEDESTRIAN SAFETY D r ive r s a r e a sk e d t o slow dow n when approaching walkers and bikers, especially when children are present. Walkers are asked to walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic and to walk in single file as traffic approaches. Please wear light colored clothing, carry a lighted flashlight and wear a reflective vest if walking at night. Please note visibilit y is especially l i m i t e d i n t h e s e a r e a s: L a n d i n g s Boulevard at Landings Court, Landings

Boulevard at both ends of Heron Way, and Kestral Park North at Pine Harrier Circle. Be cautious and alert walking or biking on narrow and curvy streets. • DECALS Letters are being sent to residents with multiple decals to verify vehicles and to confirm their registrations. Residents will have 30 days to verify the vehicle registration and decal at the main gate. If the resident fails to appear within the 30 day period, the security guards have been instructed to suspend all decals issued to that address until the resident appears with proper documentation. T h e c o m m it t e e m e t w it h s e n i o r management of our security service company to discuss recent turnover of guards, training issues, and other p e r for m a n c e i s s ue s r e l at e d t o t h e policies and procedures at the main gate. Several suggestions to improve security performance were discussed. • SUSPENSION Chairman Michael Knupp reported when a resident’s decal is suspended for multiple speeding violations, they are required to enter the property through the main gate until their decal is reactivated. For the first time, a guest has been identified as a multiple offense speed violator. Three violations occurred in a five day period exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 miles an hour. In the case of the guest of a resident, the guest can be prevented from driving on the property at all for 30 days. They will be required to walk to the residence or be picked up at the main gate. A motion was made to suspend and the motion passed. Chairman Michael Knupp welcomed Jim Goldman as a valuable volunteer to the Safety and Security Committee.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Committee chair, Maralyn KaufmanDavid, Ph.D. reported plans for the March Philippi Creek marine debris cleanup with Sarasota Bay Watch are continuing. Details were published in last month’s Eagle. More birds were added to The Landings bird list. Hopes are to develop this list into a brochure or flyer.

LAKES

Committee chair, Jeff Smith was pleased to report that the erosion mitigation project on Lake 2 and 5 was completed. A new contractor, Seabreeze Erosion Solutions of For t Myers, was sele cted to do t he project. They were hired to do the work quickly, within reasonable time frames with minimal disruption to residents. Smith thanked the Treehouse Association Board and Drainage Committee for their help with the project. • FOUNTAINS There were fewer fountain disruptions this month. The exception was a longer than usual repair of a fountain electrical problem on Lake 7. • EROSION Erosion problems on Lake 1 are currently b e i n g a dd r e s s e d . Fu n d i n g h a s b e e n approved and the project will start within 90 days and is expected to last five days. The committee is working with the homeowner’s association to answer all questions prior to beginning the work. Seabreeze Erosion Solutions will be doing the project.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner reported irrigation repairs for the month totaled $171.55.

GENERAL BUSINESS

LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky announced t he cont rac t negot iated w it h t he new maintenance person was converted from a monthly salary to hourly. A f ter a br ief discussion, LMA Pres. Norm Olshansky approved an idea to form a committee to explore the possibility of hiring a full time Facilities Manager.

LHA Meeting Notes The Landings Homeowners Association held its regular board meeting on March 11, 2021 at the Landings Racquet Club. The board of directors approved replacement roof tile on Peregrine Point Circle E and Peregrine Point Drive. It also approved exterior colors on Peregrine Point Way. Harvey Greller, a long-time member of the LHA Board of Directors, resigned his seat. Michael Donaldson was elected by the board to occupy his seat. The next regular meeting is at 7:00 PM on April 8, 2021 at the Landings Racquet Club. If an owner wishes to attend the meeting, advance notice is requested (via e-mail to whitman@cs.com). Masks are required and social distancing must be maintained.

Racquet Club News | LRC President’s Report Ships. This article is about ships. Not the type you ride on, zip across the water, or spend a lot of money on. I’m talking about friendship, sportsmanship and membership. Friendships. The Landings is a large neighborhood with over 700 residences. It’s quite easy to live in one section of The Landings and not know others a street away or on the other side of the community. But The Landings Racquet Club enables us to meet others and establish friendships that we might not get the chance to otherwise. And as we age, friendships become even more important to maintain as it offers a plethora of benefits. Yes, it’s been hard during Covid to maintain some friendships – so take the time to nurture your existing friendships or establish new ones. Go up and introduce yourself to the new member – you never know – they may become your new best friend (or as millennials say - your BFF). Sportsmanship. First, none of us are quitting our day jobs to go on the Pro Tennis Tour (though I do have this recurring dream of playing Roger Federer on Centre Court at Wimbledon. I don’t win in my dream,

but we become the best of friends – what a dream!). We play tennis and exercise for all the physical and mental benefits that we desperately need. We try hard, attempt our best shots but in the end – we’re out here for the camaraderie, the exercise and the fun banter. In fact, I often forget the score the

next day. But I don’t forget the exhilaration of a great shot, the feeling of good exercise as I walk home or the exchange of admiration for one another’s shots. And this is all enhanced with the sportsmanship we exhibit. Congratulate your opponent on a great shot, joke around with them and don’t

take it too seriously – as the prize money you’re playing for isn’t so large. Just have fun while you exercise. Membersh ip. Yes, it does have its privileges. We’re a club of ~410 members – the number fluctuates year to year, but it doesn’t stray too far from 410 members. This makes us a fairly large club with a diverse membership and one that swells and contracts as many spend part of the year elsewhere. But it’s the membership (you) that holds us together. All of the volunteer efforts make this membership special. To borrow a famous phrase from JFK’s inaugural address (and taking the liberty to modify it) – Ask not what your LRC can do for you – ask what you can do for your LRC. This really sums up our membership as we have so many volunteers who enhance our club. So, there you have my ship article for this month. These 3 “ships” aren’t nearly as expensive as a real ship, but I would argue so much more beneficial, enjoyable and rewarding. The Landings Racquet Club – tell only your best friends.

Please take a moment the next time you walk through the Pro Shop or call on the phone to do so. Establishing an emergency contact and phone number is also a good idea especially if you live alone. It will only take a minute so please do so at your earliest convenience. I h ave a r e que st for ou r seasonal residents as well, please settle your Club account before you head north for the summer. It seems wasteful to print and mail a statement each month

to an address where nobody is home. The Pro Shop staff can pull up your current balance at any time. Also, feel free to make the change from a printed statement to a n emailed one instead. News From the Court By Adrian “Mo” Moghina After you have taken notice of the playing conditions of the court and the environment at playing time, here are the three basic goals during warm up. First goal is to get a sweat in the warm up. That means that you are moving your feet. That means that you are on the balls of your feet like a boxer. Do your split step (hop) every time the opponent contacts the ball whether you are at the baseline or at the net? When you land from your split step (hop) make sure that your feet are more than shoulder width apart. That way you are lower to the ground like a sports car so that you can move more quickly in any direction. Just the split step alone will help you to get a sweat going. Second goal is to find your rhythm and timing. Sometimes, this can be very hard at the club level because a lot of club players are not relaxed enough in the warm up and they spray the ball all over the place. In that case, you might have to do a mental visualization warm up. Visualize

yourself hitting the perfect shots in your mind’s eye. Try to stay very relaxed in the hands, arms, and shoulders. Breathe out at contact. A s out h Sie st a r e side nt i s awa it i ng the decision of a Florida administrative law judge on whether a hearing will be conducted on his petition seeking to prevent the installation of a stoplight at the Avenue B and C intersection on Stickney Point Road. On Feb. 22, Administrative Law Judge Linzie F. Bogan issued a notice that a formal hearing would be conducted to determine whether James Wallace III has “standing” to challenge the Florida Department of Transportation’s plans for the traffic signal. As Cornell University’s Legal Information Institute defines it, a person has “standing” in a case if the person can show that he or she has “sustained or will sustain direct injury or harm” from a specific action and that the harm can be remedied by a court. Yet, nine days later Bogan issued a “Show Cause” order that gives all the parties in the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings (DOAH) case the opportunity to offer arguments in regard to whether that proceeding should take place after all. “Procedurally,” she wrote, citing state law, “it appears that it is premature for the [DOAH] to consider the … dispute.” Wallace is attempting to persuade FDOT staff to revoke a permit it issued last year, so the stoplight project could proceed. Benderson Development Co., the firm that has planned the Siesta Promenade development for the northwest quadrant of the intersection of U.S. 41 and Stickney Point Road, won legal approval to join the case.

Landings Resident Receives National Honor By Jane Bartnett La ndi ngs resident Da na Darwin Mallett Hummel has been awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who. The award was presented in recognition of her many years of public service to her community and to her country. The award, said Hummel who has called The Landings home since 2004, “is a reason to reflect and look back on a wonderful life.” When she first arrived 17 years ago, a year after the death of her second husband, Dr. George Hummel, M.D., Hummel drew on a lifetime of training and service and quickly got to work doing her part to improve her new home town. After joining the board of The Landings’ Carriage House Association II, she became the president and served in that capacity for 10 years. When her friend Clyde Hill, a world explorer and former administrator at the San Diego Zoo joined her 14 years ago, she and he together became active and important members of The Landings communit y. It was a natural evolution for Hummel to become the chair of the association’s Landscaping Committee. Hummel and Hill explained that “we had a gigantic landscaping project to oversee that included water drainage updates and a near rebuilding of the area.” She recalled that “we also had to oversee the repaving of the Kestral Park Circle and rebuilding of the drainage system.” In true Dana

Hummel tradition, she completed her task. Her life prior to The Landings included a bachelor’s degree in art history and architecture from Smith College, a fellowship at the Henry Francis DuPont Winterthur Mu s eu m, a m a ste r ’s deg r e e in Library Science, and many years of living abroad among t he diplomat ic a nd m i l it a r y community as the wife of a senior US Air Force officer. Born Dana Darwin in Oklahoma, and raised in Denver, Colorado, Hum mel returned to Denver after completing her studies. At Denver’s public television station KRMA, she found her dream job as part of the production team that created a series on architecture, antiques and furnishings. In 1958, she married U.S. Air Force Captain Charles Stuart Todd Mallett. The young couple shared a love of adventure and public service and began an exciting life together. During the next 20 years, the Malletts and their three children lived around the world as he served in a series of high level military and diplomatic posts across the U.S., at the Pentagon, and on bases and U.S. embassies in central America, Asia and Europe. Wh ile on assig n ment at The Foreign Area Specialist Training College at the Army Language School at the Presidio of Monterey, California, Dana Mallett did what very few civilians can claim. Although she was not a member of the military, she won admission

to the one-year intensive training program for military attaches and graduated at the top of her class. When her husband served as commander of the 193rd Infantry Brigade in Panama, she became the head librarian at Howard Air Force Base. After relocating state-side to suburban Virginia in 1975, Dana Mallett accepted a position at the World Bank, in their Africa Division. She discovered that many women who were brought to the U.S. by foreign diplomats as domestic staff faced complex domestic abuse and immigration issues and she worked to correct this injustice. In 1983, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors a n d C o m m i t t e e o f Wo m e n awarded her with their Special Achievement Award for her work. She went on to join a leading Washington D.C. ‘think tank,’ as their corporate librarian and became a trustee, treasurer and then president of Virginia’s Fairfax County Library Board. Four large libraries were built under her leadership. In the 1980‘s Hummel served as a delegate to a Virginia State convention, and after her military officer husband’s death, she continued her career. After marrying her second husband, George P. Hummel, M.D., the couple retired and moved to Sarasota’s Prestancia community in Palmer Ranch. When Dr. Hummel died in 2003, she joined friends for a South American cruise that departed from San Diego. Through

a chance meeting before the cruise, she met an old high school friend named Clyde Hill, who lived in San Diego. The two had not seen each other in 51 years. Months later, a Christmas card from Hill arrived in Hummel’s mailbox. He asked if she enjoyed her trip to South America. Soon, letters, phone calls, and several years of longdistance travel followed. In 2007,

Hill moved from San Diego and joined Hummel at The Landings. The two have been together ever since. A favor ite quote by Ra lph Waldo Emerson, sums up Dana Hummel’s view of life and ends with the words “to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded.”

Murmuration – sticking together for safety By Maralyn Kaufman-David, Environmental Committee Chairperson Just about a year after the pandemic brought us all to a halt in our daily activities, I’ve noticed several news reports and photos of murmuration! Yes, from Ireland to Rome to Northern California, birds are showing off their togetherness for a common cause of survival in a flight behavior called murmuration – a mass of a large numbers of birds moving at up to 40 mph as one synchronized body and changing direction in an instant. It is believed the behavior is for safety in numbers from predators and possibly to reduce energy use while flying. Murmuration oftentimes results in the formation of shapes resembling a gigantic bird, a heart, a rabbit – like looking at the shapes of clouds. Note the photo below that captures murmuration of starlings as they formed into the shape of a giant bird. Starlings, shorebirds, and blackbirds are the most common types of birds to use the murmuration flight technique. Thus, we here on the gulf coast of Florida, may be able to catch a glimpse of one of these events along the shore. The murmuration phenomenon has piqued the interest of inquiring minds for hundreds of years…with explanations ranging from the influence of gods through ideas that the birds were somehow connected by telepathy or brain signals through more modern theories supported by advanced photography and computers. I’d like to continue dance through high school and college. What do you want to be when you grow up? I’d like to be a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist. What is one great thing about your family? We have a funny family and just have great family dinners together. If you were invisible for a day, what would you do? I’d scare my best friend. If you could be president for the day, what would you do? I’d try to make this world have racial equality. Have you taken any trips lately? Yes, in January, we were in Harbor Island, Bahamas and we swam with pigs and turtles. I got bit by a turtle! We also went spearfishing and I got a 50 pound tuna. How has COVID affected you? COVID has affected the entire theater industry, Broadway, and others. Remote learning has been difficult since everyone interprets things differently. One good thing that has come out of this is that I became closer with my best friend over the summer and by homeschooling. One bad thing is the separation with my grandmother and me. Yesterday, I had a performance from 12-7:30PM. I danced every 4 to 8 dances and had a 2 ½ hour break in between. There was a socially distanced audience but it was hard to dance with a mask on. Who is someone that inspires you? My mother because of the arts she did in the past. She danced and was in theater.

Dog Food Fiction: 5 Common Myths By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect While following trends and opinions can often be helpful, as we learn more about canine nutrition it’s important to separate fact from fiction. After all, it’s our precious pups’ health and well being on the line. With that in mind, let’s take a look at five common dog food myths and how to dispel them with science and research from pet professionals and nutritional experts.

Rule of thumb: not all meal is created equal. How can one tell? Like we’ve discussed before, label literacy is key. If a product label lists “chicken meal,” “beef meal,” and the like, that’s A-OK as 100% of the meat content is concentrated protein. But if the label is byproduct meal or, worse, unspecific about its animal source it’s time to raise the red flag and avoid those offerings.

Dog Food Myth #1: Kibble Promotes Dental Health You’ve probably heard this one a lot – dog food companies have made sure of it. That’s right. Big Kibble is largely responsible for the myth that their products promote doggie dental health. But unlike humans, a dog’s saliva doesn’t contain amylase, the enzyme that breaks down carbs and starches in our mouths. As such, when dogs consume kibble binder can combine with oral bacteria to cause plaque, tartar and potentially gum disease. If you do opt for kibble to supplement your dog’s diet, just know that it could harm rather than help your pup’s teeth, and make sure to keep chew toys and chew bones on regular rotation to counter binder buildup.

Dog Food Myth #4: High Protein Diets are Detrimental Similarly to questions about meal, the high protein diet discussion is dependent on defining specifics. Protein derived from meat is fairly easy for dogs to digest and, naturally, gets easier with higher quality cuts and products. Additionally, protein promotes muscle growth and helps deter atrophy. Vegetable and plant protein, on the other hand, is more difficult to break down and can be hard on a dog’s body. So, when it comes to high protein keep mind that the butcher is your best bet.

Dog Food Myth #2: Dietary Changes Lead to Digestion Challenges It’s no secret that brands want consumers to stay loyal to their labels. So, it’s not surprising that, when it comes to our second myth, long established traditional dog food companies are up to their old tricks. Changing a dog’s diet could upset their digestion? As you might expect, pretty much the opposite is true. If your pup doesn’t possess any major digestion issues or food intolerances, much like their owners they can bore easily of the same old grub. Try mixing up meals with a variety of healthy meat s, vege t able s, a nd c a rb s t h at c a n not only keep things interesting but also introduce important amino acids and micronutrients that make for a more balanced diet. The “Best Bread in the World” has only two ingredients By Dee Ricapito ICE CREAM BREAD Ingredients: 1 cup melted butter pecan ice cream (any store brand) 3/4 cup unbleached self-rising flour Melt the ice cream in container. Measure liquid into a cup. You have a thick heavy batter when mixed all together. Pour everything into a loaf pan and bake @ 350*F for 25 minutes. Result is a super moist coffee cake like taste but not so sweet But super yummy crowd pleaser No name on this recipe because I haven’t made this recipe yet. Now that I’m retired and living in The Landings, I do have fun and can be the life of the party, even if it’s only until 8 pm! And, in these pandemic times, it’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere. I know it’s different for everyone, but I’m learning new skills; I’m really good at telling stories; over, and over... We all face new physical and mental challenges than we did when we were younger, I find I’m really good at opening childproof caps … with a hammer! I am proactive and staying involved with our community. Social interaction is important. I

just don’t like loud music, waiting in crowds, traffic, barking dogs, politicians, interrupting phone ca l ls w it h a n noy i ng foreig n salesmen, and a few other things I can’t remember right now. Isn’t aging in paradise wonderful? I especially like staying engaged at with others at the Racquet Club and listening to the stories from amazing people with such interesting backgrounds. It’s not unusual for people to linger after tennis or a swim… just sitting, talking, and laughing at a good joke. For example: My friend was named Rose and she hated the description of Rose in the Garden Catalog: “Not good in bed, but fine

against the wall.” Or: An old gent goes into an ice cream parlor, pulled himself up slowly and painfully on to a stool. He ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, “Crushed nuts?” “No,” he replied... “arthritis”. Humor lightens your burdens, it’s the best medicine that connects you to others, even keeps one focused and alert...(while waiting for the vaccine and/or wearing a mask or two). Yet, I look forward to the days ahead when normal times return, and the pandemic is only a long ago memory. Funny thing, I don’t remember being absent minded. Oh’… my aging funny bone!

New Restaurant in Landings Shopping Center New eatery with familiar name The Landings Shopping Center has a new restaurant but features a name many local residents might already familiar with – Anthony’s Italian Deli & Eatery is owned by Anthony Puccio. Puccio and his family had previously operated two Sarasota restaurants under the same Anthony’s name before selling both restaurants in the 2000s. There was a deli and a fine dining restaurant located on Osprey Avenue. Puccio, whose father opened the original Anthony’s in 1974, will own the new restaurant along with his wife, Karen. Since selling the Osprey Avenue locations, Puccio served as food and beverage director at Lido Beach Resort, then the same position and executive chef at Sarasota Yacht Club, but missed the sense of family and community involvement that Anthony’s brought. “I’d been at the Yacht Club for 10 years and I was actually thinking of retiring at one point,” Puccio said. “But me and my wife talked about it and we’re like, ‘That’s kind of what’s been missing in our lives.’ So, this opportunity came along, and we grabbed it.” Anthony’s Italian Deli & Eatery is located at 4944 S. Tamiami Trail (previous home to Kruk’s Philly Steaks) and will focus on lunch, with dishes including pizza, calzones, lasagna, spaghetti and sandwiches such as meatball and veal parmesan. “That’s what we were kind of known for, especially our meatball sub, that was like our famous sandwich,” Puccio said. “Our meatballs were like the size of a baseball, we’d slice them up and people would think that was great.” Puccio said there will also be an emphasis on carryout, with curbside available. The front of the restaurant has a deli-style feel with grab-and-go meals, as well as specialty items such as imported pastas and olive oils/vinegars and baked goods like homemade biscotti and cannoli. There also will be a dine-in section in the back featuring an open kitchen view. The area has 50 seats and also offer beer and wine. Anthony’s Italian Deli & Eatery is open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM.

music. She did not always like the music she had to play but then there were pieces that she just loved. Repeating some popular operas too many times became tedious but there were always beautiful parts that made up for it. Her favorite work: Richard Wagner’s musical drama “Der Ring des Niebelungen”. It is very demanding but has a beautiful part for the cello. At this time, Ellen has only retired from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and still hopes to play for the American Ballet Orchest ra a nd t he Moza r t Festival when they resume their performances. I asked Ellen, “What the life of a performing orchestra musician at the Metropolitan Opera is like?” She told me, “That she loved her work, but it had many challenges. She had a family to care for — a son and a daughter (now 24 and 27 years old) and she missed being able to be home with them in the evening.” During the opera season, the ballet season and the Mozart Festival, she was out playing at rehearsals and performing every night. The reward was to be able to enjoy the music, be surrounded by the sound and by the musical experience. Orchestra musicians work in very close proximity to each other and when you play there, you start feeling part of the
