Greetings to you all. November brought us some beautiful weather, traffic cones at the Del Tura doorstep, and a very full entertainment calendar. All of us on the HOA Board extend many thanks to those of you who worked so hard to organize, set up, pack boxes, decorate, and clean up after those events. December will be just as busy. Because of that, finding a place to park at the Clubhouse for Tuesday Coffee or for major events becomes difficult. May I suggest that in the interest of not Grinch-
ifying your holiday spirit, we all make a deliberate effort to both carpool and cart pool? And those of us who live relatively near the Clubhouse might walk. (Okay, it’s my holiday diet plan.) One quick reminder: The HOA Board will make its annual tour of the community to select winners of the holiday lighting contest on Monday, December 8, so the result can be announced at the December 10 Board meeting. If you want to enter your home or your pool area, please call a Board member or sign up at Tuesday
Coffee or at the HOA Office. On the subject of Board members, terms for three current Board members expire in February (Blevins, Burns Phillips, and Smith). If you wish to be a candidate for membership on the HOA Board of Directors, please contact Louise Wilcox, chair of the Nominating Committee, right away. The 2014 Statutory Committee has concluded its work with the request at a joint meeting with the Board to set up a special subcommittee to carry out recommendations for educating the community
on the rights of buyers and sellers under Florida Statute 723. Subcommittee members are Ruth Ann Blevins, Bart DeGraaf, Jay Flanagan, Donna Burns Phillips, Hank Reeve, and Jim Stenzel. The 2015 Statutory Committee (Ruth Ann Blevins, chair; Barry Chadwell, alternate; Bart DeGraaf; Jack Howard, alternate; Donna Burns Phillips; Roger Rockenbaugh and Jim Stenzel) has been constituted and begun its meetings. it’s Good To Have a Ham in the ‘Hood Imagine it is day three after the eye of a hurricane passed directly over North Fort Myers. Electrical power is out for all of Southwest Florida and will not be restored for several days or even weeks. Cell phone towers, land lines and internet connections are either out of service or so overloaded that they have ceased to work. How will you let your loved ones up north know you are safe? How can Del Tura communicate its immediate needs to the Lee County Emergency Operations center (EOC)? Del Tura is fortunate to have Bill Nezamis as a year-round resident. Bill is a trained volunteer for the Lee County amateur Radio emergency Service (ARES). This is an integral part of the county’s emergency communications system. During a disaster Bill will be able to operate his shortwave radios completely “off the grid” to communicate not only with EOC, but also with other amateur radio

operators, (often called “ham radio operators”) throughout the United States. “Ham radio operators have a proud and successful one hundred year history of providing emergency radio communications during disasters”, said Steve Smith, ARES emergency Coordinator in Lee County. “Bill is one of many ham radio operators in Lee county who attend monthly training classes at the EOC. They also participate in weekly ‘on-the air’ radio communication checks and bi-annual simulated disaster drills to test readiness of both equipment and operator. ARES ham operators may be deployed by Lee County EOC to any location of critical need such as hospitals and evacuation shelters.” The ARES nationwide network of trained volunteers has often been recognized and praised by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director Craig Fugate for being a consistently re-
liable means of emergency communications when other systems failed or were overloaded. So, how will you let family know you have survived the storm? Simply go to Bill’s home and knock on his door. Together you will create a message that will be precisely relayed to a loved one by Bill and a network of ham radio operators in service to their communities. Within a short time the message will reach your family and they can even send you a return message to let you know they received it. It’s comforting to know that in the event of an emergency or disaster, the Del Tura community will have our neighbor Bill Nezamis to provide us with a solid connection to both the outside world and our local emergency management operations center. by Dianne Roderick “Christmas Magic” Can you remember when you were between the ages of 5 and 7? The excitement of this time of year was at times indescribable! Trying to contain yourself each day as the holidays crept closer and closer wasn’t easy- and we had to be oh so good! There seemed to be a multitude of things that would heighten our senses during this time of our lives. You saw, you felt, you inhaled all of the smells and excitement of the season. I remember going shopping with Mom, not daring to let go of her hand for fear of being lost in the crowd. One couldn’t help to inhale the scents of those beautiful pine trees and wreaths. How they filled the air! They just seemed to add more excitement to this magical season. Those smells were still with me as I drifted off to sleep that night. The visions may not have been of “sugar plums” but they certainly added to how we envisioned what our Christmas would be like. I still remember a Christmas vision
that remains in my memory today and until this day it feels real to me. I was six years old and like any other child of that age was awed by Santa and the stories surrounding this jolly old soul. At that age you have many questions. What happens if it doesn’t snow? How will Santa get in? We don’t have a fireplace… so worried that he would miss our house! After much reassurance we finally relaxed and believed that Santa would find a way and all would be fine. Isn’t that part of the magic? That excitement whether a child of five or ninety-five remains with you as you celebrate each blessed Christmas. As a young child I remember hearing stories about The Macy’s Santa and how there was a magic wishing star you could stand on as you waited to see Santa. Would you believe that I was forty-five years old when I finally made it to Macy’s? So many years had passed but I was just as excited as when I was five. It was amazing! So crazy in New York City at that time of year, but doesn’t that go along with
the season? I felt like a child again, more excited than my sixteen year old daughter and her friend. I think that she thought that her Mom had lost her mind as we bustled through the crowd to watch Santa ice skate in Rockefeller Center. You know that vision that I was telling you about earlier, the one when I was six years old? Well I truly feel until this day it was real. I was awakened by a noise coming from our parlor, so I crept oh so quietly out of bed and peeked around the corner. There he was, that jolly man in the red suit placing our presents ever so gingerly under our tree. He didn’t see me but stopped for a moment to look behind him. I know he had to use his magic to get into our house! He had the bluest of eyes that twinkled just like the poem says. My older brother says that I am crazy until this day but I still believe it happened. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? You have to believe in the “Magic of Christmas”. If you do you’ll always be young at heart! Merry Christmas!

FisH Fruit Tree project - year End report

October 1, 2013 - september 30, 2014 We picked fruit from 49 homes and we would like to thank the volunteer pickers and the homeowners for their help in continuing this project. Without their donation of fruit we could not help the needy in our community. We urge you as homeowners to continue to notify me (543-3662) or Sherry (567-0538) of any fruit
that we may pick or of any trees that need to be picked that are owned by absent homeowners. We can check our picking history to find out if we previously had permission from the owners. Fruit that was picked included Avocados, Grapefruit, Lemons, Mango, Oranges, Star Fruit and Tangerines. A total of 3,930 lbs of fruit was

The luncheon is completely free for the senior and his or her companion. KNOW YOUR VOLUNTEER Peg McTernan
Peg McTernan, of La Paloma Blvd, has been a Del Tura resident for almost eleven years! She heard about Del Tura from her cousin, Alice Harris, and her cousin Bill and his wife, Joan Harris, who live here and said “Come to Florida!” So she sold her home in Cambridge, Massachusetts and moved south. She enjoys Tai Chi, bowling on Saturdays with the Del Tura bowlers, and playing Trivia. Peg held a variety of interesting jobs in Massachusetts. She worked for the Telephone Company (remember when it used to be called “The Telephone Company?”) on State Street in Boston working on IBM machines and later as a computer operator. Eventually, she left to get married
and was a stay-at-home mom for seven years raising her children. Peg then went on to work in Western Massachusetts at the Erving Paper Mill which produced Specialty paper napkins (think Hallmark). She then worked for the United States Postal Service in Orange, Mass. Orange is a tiny, quaint, New England town. The Post Office was in a building that also housed the general store. Peggy says she became a “jack of all trades” doing every job in the Post Office, even serving as Assistant Postmaster! Peggy has volunteered her time in many different aspects here at Del Tura. For the last four (4) years, Peg has served as the president of “The Good Timers” – a singles group who meet to enjoy life together. They celebrate member’s birthdays, have
a “Road Rally” which is a golf cart scavenger hunt, have a “Kentucky Derby” and attend shows at Broadway Palm. With Peg and her effervescent personality at the helm, I am sure it’s a fun group! Peg has also served on the Bereavement Committee, has worked in the HOA office where she got to meet many folks, FISH (Friends in Service Here), and on The Tower distribution. She also is a volunteer at NARFE – National Active and Retired Federal Employees, in North Fort Myers. Peg serves as Vice president for this fine organization. When you get to know Peg, you immediately recognize that she has a big heart and is willing to share it with our community. Thank you, Peggy, for sharing your life with us in so many meaningful ways!

“It is in giving that we receive.” Israel Ayivor During the holiday season, we often contemplate what gifts to give. Some people are presents themselves and are constantly giving. One such person is Peg McTernan, president of the Good Timers for the past four years. I remember the day, oh so many years ago when we convinced her to serve as president for a “short” time. Well, she did such a great job that we wouldn’t think of letting her step down. For those of you fortunate enough to know Peg, you know she is a person who is always there for everyone in her life. Regardless of whatever challenges she personally is facing, she puts others before herself. Be it a smile, an encouraging word, a ride, information, a sympathetic ear, a joke, etc., Peg is always available to provide it. We thank her for her dedication to the Good Timers, but mostly we thank her for being who she is. The officers for 2015 will be: Mary Lou Pudlow - President; Joyce Lienert - Vice President; Lyn Bailey - Secretary; and Lorna Callan - Treasurer. We thank them for agreeing to serve this next year. The November birthday celebration was held at the Broadway DEL TURA
Palm where those attending were treated to an excellent production of “A Christmas Carol” to kick off the holiday season. Thanks to Bill Southwick and Mary Lou Pudlow for hosting this festive event. Birthday celebrants were Peg McTernan, Ann Boncore, Lillian Klopp and Zela Hoyt. We will continue in the holiday mode when we have our annual Holiday Dinner at our own Fountain Grille on December 9 with cocktail hour at 4:00 p.m. and dinner at 5:00 p.m. Co-hosting this event will be our outgoing president PegMcTernan and our incoming president Mary Lou Pudlow. There is no fee for this dinner for those Good Timers who were members for the 2014 year. If you wish, bring a $1.00 wrapped gift and participate in the annual Yankee Swap. The protagonist, Isabel, is a middle age philosopher who edits a magazine concerning ethics and the philosophical study of moral values and rules. This insatiable appetite of interest lands her into a unique pursuit. A chance meeting introduces her to a man who has had a heart
transplant and experiences ongoing dreams of a face that is completely unknown to him. He shares his exacting description of the recurring face to her. Isabel concludes it to be cellular memory. Isabel sets out to find the unknown donor so as to free her newfound friend, Ian from his anguish. The research of death notices concurrent with the heart transplant met with despair. She then came to realize she had over-
looked a death that occurred in the village just outside of Edinburgh. The 22 year-old donor had committed suicide harboring strong animosity toward his father who had deserted the family. The father’s face replicated that in Ian’s dream. The father’s heart was softened as he realized his son lived on in the new person and family ties were once again restored. Ian was now freed from the dream.

Hello Fellow Del Turians, Great to see everyone back from the North Country. Save Our Strays is still in operation. With our huge efforts during 2013 and early 2014 we have seen a significant reduction in the number of kitty litters both this past spring and this fall. We have taken in more than 50 cats to be spayed or neutered and released back into the Del Tura community. The Del Tura Save Our Strays program is part of the Lee County Trap Neuter/Spay Return program and now the North Fort Myers Feral Cat Community. Being part of the North Fort Myers Feral Cat Community program means that we now have a place for those cats which can be adopted out or need some time to recover before being released. From time to time we receive donations of

Turn a Feral cat into a domestic cat

that our feral cat numbers seem to be declining to the point where they are worried. We have to remember that in the wild a feral cat’s lifetime is half of a domesticated pet. A feral cat’s lifespan is 5-7 years. Cats are territorial in nature and rather fickle. This means that we may see them for years and then they are gone. The food two blocks over is better. Feral cats have few natural predators. Predators such as coyotes usually are only able to catch those feral cats which are sick or old. Unfortunately this is the way of the wild feral cat community and something we have very little control over. The volunteers with the North Fort Myers Feral Cat program will pick them up. Funds from these cans go toward supporting this local community program. The Del Tura SOS program will now focus more of our attention on providing appropriate shelter for those feral cats in our community so they are less likely to look for a dry and/or warm shelter under someone’s home. I have wanted a cat for a long time, but my husband and I did not want to leave a pet at home while we were traveling. Finally we have decided to stay put and he talked to Helen Wythe about getting a cat. One Sunday we were invited to the Harder's for dinner and Helen brought out a ball of
white fur and said it was for me. Our loving sweet six month old kitten came home to live with us. If we had paid $500.00 for a cat we could not have found a better one. Sammy Snowflake, better known around our home, as Sam has been a joy since the first day. Sam was a feral cat and was caught, neutered and given his
first shot before Helen gave him to me. Sam loves to be held and petted or to just sit next to you with a paw touching you. I encourage anyone who would like a kitten to contact Helen Wythe and talk to her. Not all feral cats can be domesticated, but many of them can. Please think about giving a feral cat a loving home.

Check Out This Year-End Financial Checklist
As 2014 draws to a close, you may want to look back on the progress you’ve made this past year in various areas of your life — and that certainly includes progress toward your financial goals. At the same time, you may want to make some end-of-year moves that can close out 2014 on a positive note while paving the way for a productive 2015.
HERE ARE A FEW SUCH MOVES TO CONSIDER: • •
Boost your retirement plan contributions. This actually isn’t an “end-of-year” move because you have until April 15, 2015, to contribute to your Roth or Traditional T IRA for the 2014 tax year. Nonetheless, the sooner you get extra dollars working for you in your IRA, the better. You can put in up to $5,500 to your IRA (or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older) for 2014. If you are self-employed, or run a small business, you also have until April 15 to contribute to a retirement account, such as a SEP IRA or a SIMPLE plan. In addition to helping you build resources for retirement, these types of plans can offer you some tax advantages — so if you haven’t established a retirement plan yet, consult with your financial and tax professionals Sell your “losers.” If you own investments that have lost value since you purchased them, you can sell them before 2014 ends and use the tax loss to offset some capital gains you may have earned in other investments. If you don’t have any capital gains, you can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses to offset other ordinary income. And for a loss greater than $3,000, you can “carry over” the excess and deduct it from your taxes in future years. If you still liked the investment that you sold at a loss, and you want to keep it in your portfolio, you could repurchase it, but you’ll have to wait 31 days to avoid violating the IRS’ “wash sale” rules. Keep in mind that these suggestions only apply to investments held outside your employer-sponsored retirement account; you can’t take a tax deduction on capital losses in a 401(k) or similar plan. • Evaluate your 401(k) investment mix. You Y may be able to adjust the investment mix in your 401(k) as often as you like. So when evaluating your 401(k), make sure your holdings aren’t concentrated in just a few investments, and try to determine if your portfolio is still appropriate for your risk tolerance — not too aggressive or too conservative. Also, if your plan offers a “Roth” option, consider taking advantage of it — with a Roth, you won’t be able to deduct your 401(k) contributions from your taxes, but once you retire, you won’t be taxed on your with- drawals. • Review your insurance coverage. If you’ve experienced any changes in your life in 2014 — new spouse, new child, divorce, new job, etc. — you may need to review your life insurance coverage to make sure that it’s still sufficient for your needs and that you have the correct beneficiaries in place. By making these and other moves, you can say a fond farewell to 2014, knowing that you’ve done what you could to help bolster your financial position — for 2015 and beyond. If you find yourself in Port Charlotte near the dinner hour, visit Donato’s which is located in the Murdock Carousel Plaza near Lowes on Tamiami Trail. We enjoy family-owned, ethnic restaurants and this is one of the best we have found since moving to SWFL. The Ambiance - This restaurant has such a colorful, creative interior design. When you walk in you are immediately a part of an old subway station complete with a newspaper stand and turn-style, on your way through a New York City subway tunnel. You come upon a whimsical, moving, mechanical saxophone player prior to entering the bar. I think this entire ambience is re-
ally unique. The black ceiling in the restaurant has tiny pinholes to allow the LED lights to shine through, creating the feeling of a starry evening. The walls are designed to look like retail stores in an old Italian neighborhood such as the many old streets in similar Little Italy areas all over the country. So, as you are eating, you get the feel you are eating outdoors, al fresco style. With a full dining room, the noise level is moderate. There was not a problem talking and hearing the people at our table. The Service – When we were seated in our cozy booth, our server appeared with warm bread, crusty on the outside and soft and airy on the inside and a plate with freshly grated Fontina and Romano cheeses, olive oil, spices and chopped garlic. The server took our drink order and gave us a mammoth menu to peruse and was off to get the drinks. We broke the bread and dipped it in the olive oil mixture. The oil with the warm bread was amazingly
delicious. Before we knew it, our server was back with the drinks. We had a few questions about our entrée selections and that evening’s specials, which were answered without hesitation. The Food – From the list of six rather customary appetizers, we chose one to share that is normally not on a menu. It is Arancini, Sicilian rice balls. They arrived to the table perfectly crisp, light and flavorful, reminiscent of my former mother-in-law’s. The entrees are served with your choice of soup or salad and whole wheat pasta is offered upon request. With each type of entrée, a suitable wine is suggested from their extensive wine list. For example, they suggested Opici Chianti or Auspicion Cabernet with the pasta. Since I am not a wine expert, I found this helpful. The menu, which is very large, is divided into types such as: Pasta and Stuffed Pasta, Risotto, Chicken, Seafood and Veal. It’s easy to zone in on your favorites right away. We all had a different
entrée but the fish special of the evening was Covina. A delicate, mild, extremely tasty whitefish. It arrived at the table hot, perfectly flaky and with a side of pasta and a vegetable presented in an eyeappealing way. Our friend loved it. My pasta dish, Eggplant Parmigiana which was piping hot with melted mozzarella cheese and layered with crispy slices of lightly fried eggplant in a marvelous marinara sauce was excellent. The Chicken Piccata was lightly pan-seared and in a tangy but delicate sauce of white wine, lemon and capers. All our entrees were of generous size but not so large as to be overwhelming. Although none of us left room for dessert, I ordered their homemade cannoli to take home. We each had a cappuccino and relaxed before going our separate ways home after our enjoyable experience. Oh, I forgot to mention, pizza is served to eat in or take out! If you are visiting Port Charlotte, I highly recommend you visit this restaurant. I hope you

and Then it is Winter
You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is, my friends are retired and getting grey. They move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me, but, I see the great change. Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant, but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore - it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will - I just fall asleep where I sit! And so now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the
loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last, but this I know, that when it's over on this earth, it's NOT over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done. Things I should have done. But indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not in your winter yet, let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past! "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after, so make it a fantastic one. Live it well! Enjoy today! Do something fun! Be happy! Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere. You notice everything they sell in stores is sleeveless! What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody whispers. You have three sizes of clothes in your closet, two of which you will never wear. But old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD Friends! By Heléne Glasson It wasn’t even Thanksgiving and a deluge of Christmas catalogs have started to clog my mailbox. Since the weather was still very warm, I hadn’t even begun to think of the Holidays yet. But it really was time to start the preparations right away! I bought Christmas cards, updated my list from last year and had the Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations taken down from garage storage and prepared to start my action plan. I can report the plan is moving forward and we will have time to enjoy most of the events planned for Del Tura during December. My personal favorites are the Christmas Tree Lighting and Pageant and the annual Cocktail Party and Golf Cart Parade. I was reading one of the many Christmas issues of my magazines and saw some Christmas traditions I thought were rather different. I would like to share a few from the staff of one of these magazines. First from Diane, she and her husband don’t buy gifts for each other, she says they already have too
much stuff, so around mid-December they go to a department store and pay down layaways for people who have toys on hold. They love how it makes them feel. To me this is the true spirit of Christmas, helping those less fortunate. Katrina started a new tradition a few years ago: cheesy family photos. One year, they wore matching pajamas. Another they were the Greek von Trapps. It leaves them with fun memories throughout the year. Finally, a New Year’s Eve tradition shared by Anita who spends every New Year’s Eve at their best friends’ house in pajamas! There is champagne, caviar and a new pair of pajamas. A fun idea but not the way I will be spending my New Year’s Eve. I would love it if 318 of my favorite Del Tura residents would spend their New Year’s Eve with me in the beautifully decorated Starlight Ballroom of the Clubhouse starting at 8:00 p.m. We’ll be dancing to the Greg Miller Band, which is one of the most requested bands in SW Florida while they play all our favorite

They also need to be HOA members. If you come with another resident and are purchasing a table, it is a big help if you have the names written down prior to coming up to buy your tickets. Checks are preferred but if you have the exact amount in cash that is okay too. I look forward to seeing you at what will be a very special dance!

As I write this, it is hard to believe another year is quickly coming to an end. I am thankful for many things in 2015, especially for the opportunity to be here with you at Del Tura. By Jay Flanagan As the weather gradually moves out the stifling summer heat and temperatures become more moderate, the number of men playing in the Men’s League competitions and in the daily ‘skin games’ continues to grow. Those men interested in playing in the games need only to sign up DEL TURA
on the desired day’s roster on the boards in the dungeon or call the director of each game. With the return of the many snowbirds, the men initiated their tournament season with the President’s Cup competition on November 5. The opening day showed 72 members playing in an 18 hole match play dual listed in five different flights. Each day
of the tourney whittled the field in half and at press time the first four flights were down to the semifinals and flight 5 had eight golfers left. In Flight 1, the final four were Mike Tracy and Jerry Beiermann along with Wayne Volz and Jack Howard. Ron Cole meeting Steve Buco and Marty DeCara against Jack Berling fought for the finals in Flight 2. In Flight 3,
Mike Pallazzolo teed off against Jack O’Hearn and John Brennan met Jay Flanagan. Flight 4 had Dick Welch meeting Bob Garabedian and Rich Nalbach verses Tom McGilloway. The four matches left in Flight 5 include Tom Condos/ Steve Marra, Tony Oliver vs Joe Heidecker, David Koch against Denny Roose and David Csuy meeting Marcel Bedard.
December’s activities will include the annual Award’s Dinner on Friday, December 5 with cocktails at 5:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. Champions of the 2014 tournaments will be honored during the evening. Also included on the docket for December is a Low Net Tourney on December 17 and 18 and the month activities end with the Bloody Mary Open on January 1.

By Tony Ragone The 2014-15 season for the Del Tura Thursday Bowling opened on October 16 with eight (8) teams at the All Star Bowling Lanes. After being in the very capable hands of Anna Wilson and Gloria Ellis for more years than I can remember, the season commenced without a hitch under the guidance of Joan Stevenson, Ray Connolly and Tony Ragone.
We welcomed new members Peg McMillan, Dee Wipperforth, Evelyn LaFlin, Dave Lane and Jane Snyder. We currently have four teams with a “vacancy” which we would love to fill with permanent members, so come on out and join us! In the meantime, maybe you’d like to sub whenever you could. If so, just come on over any Thursday (We start practice at 2:15 p.m.)
and we’ll fit you in with one of the teams that has a permanent or temporary vacancy. No need to call, just show up! (Sub fees are $8.50 per week bowled). Thanks to our “Semi-permanent” subs Dave Csuy and Marley Haag for filling in whenever they can. Congratulations on joining the 200 club on 10/16 to Ray Connelly (202 scratch) and on 10/23 Barry Plisch with a 210 scratch game.

Friday shuffleboard league
December starts the second month of shuffleboard in our league. As you all know by now, we started our season on November 7. Our league this season consists of eighteen teams rather than the twenty teams in the past few years. We had some people who dropped out for various reasons, health issues, jobs or are no longer here with us, so we did some shuffling around as far as teams are concerned and also moved teams from one flight to the other which was determined by the final win/loss record at the end of last year’s season. We do that to keep both flights competitive and fair in competing for the trophies. It’s great to be back in beautiful Del Tura and sunny and warm SW Florida. It doesn’t get any better than this. To start with I want to welcome all our members back who are playing and also welcome a few new members to our league. The following people were subs in the past and this year are permanent team members: DEL TURA
Al Oostema, Kathy Boesel, Ed Dye, Chris Raynor and Marlene Eck. Paula Major is the one new person to join our league as a permanent member. On behalf of the entire league I want to give a big welcome to all the new members. Glad to have you with us and hope we have you for a long time to come and also welcome back to all our returning members. I am looking forward to another year of fun and camaraderie among the team members and the subs that play with us. Talking about subs, we are always looking for people who would rather play as a sub instead of a weekly team member. Anyone wishing to be a sub for our Friday league please contact Janet or myself at 731-0892. We do have an answering machine if we don’t happen to be home when you call. Just leave a message with a phone number and we’ll be glad to call you back. Here are the standings of the first thru third places in both flights after the first week of play. The “A” flight has the following 3-teams tied for 1st place
with records of 3-wins and 0-losses. Ben Hargraves/Joe Vigilante, Dave and Nancy Denny and Bob and Donna Crawford. In the “B” flight the leaders are Glenn and Diana Camp at 2/1 and all but one of the remaining teams are tied at 1-win and 2-losses so in this writing I will not mention the names of the 7 teams in “B” flight all tied for 2nd. place. By my next letter in the January Tower we will have played another three weeks so the standings should change a lot by then. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. By the time you read this, we will have our outside Christmas display up and running in our yard like we always do, so please stop by and take a look. We usually try to add something new every year to our display. Bring your kids and grandkids who are visiting to see what we have here for them to enjoy. By Jay Flanagan The Del Tura Amigos, men’s softball team in the Mark and Mary Ford League playing their second season in Punta Gorda, has begun their pre-season conditioning and looking forward to opening night on January 5. This team finished a close runner-up with a 15-3 record during the 2014 season and has compiled a 49-8-2 record over the past three years. Most of the players who competed last year are back along with a number of new players vying for playing time. All are looking to have another successful season. The team was given
great support from the community during last year’s season and hope that an even bigger group will follow the team throughout this year’s schedule. To enable all of our fans to follow the team, the players on this year’s squad and their uniform numbers are infielders Mike Stark (#6), Jerry Beiermann (#25), Joe Angelilli (#8), Rob Fringuelli (#24), Jesse Leverre (#5), Dave Denman (#11), Rick Bourquin (#12), Jim Hamilton (#14), and Mike Scott (#8). Roaming the outfield will be Don Vadeboncoeur (#16), John Ruttman (#4), Craig Lindahl (#23), Earl Boss (#3), Ken Estabrooks (#18) and
Rick Antaya (#20). Behind the plate will be Rick Robbins (#26), Ross Bonney (#21) and on the mound will be Tom Walsh (#15), Rick Manual (#19). New comers include Bob Neilson, Don Castel, Jack Theriault, Jeff Fisher, Chaz Kenney, Bart DeGraff, Vaughn Wedge and Dan Duffy. Jay Flanagan (#13) will be starting his fourth year managing the squad and all will be looking forward to your continued support during our season which runs from January 5 through March 11, 2015, on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. on the Charlotte County fields.

By Carol Marra With all the activities of the month of November it is obvious that we are into season. There are so many folks back; our snowbirds from the northern states as well as many Canadians. We even have Moa Shearer, all the way from Sweden. And after so many small groups during the summer it was great that November meant many more players and the chance to see our friends once again. We played our Club Championship on November 13, 19 and 20. The awards for this tournament will be given out at the December Awards Banquet on the 5th. December is our MemberMember and will be played December 10 and 11. Sign up if you have not already done so. The Pro Shop sponsored a Mixed Scotch on Saturday, No-

Our next LEGA event was at Myerlee on November 17. We always arrange car pools and everyone had a good time; and don’t forget: lunch! Reciprocals are over so LEGA becomes an inexpensive way to see other courses. Check the board for more information or talk to Ruth Ann Blevins. Invitationals are not as often as LEGA but we do have one on December 3 at Cross Creek. Invitationals are team events and include lunch as well as raffles and prizes. There is always a sign-up sheet, or contact Jan Pedersen. Holes-in-One!: We continue to have a number
of holes-in-one; and you might notice a slight(!!) repetition of certain names. Micki Sullivan had ANOTHER one on November 6, this time on 2 North. And that was closest to the pin hole so she won two different ways. Penny Mikesh’s hole-in-one was on 4 West and Debbi Overholser had yet ANOTHER one on 2 West. You may not know that Penny has the distinction of having two holes-in-one in the same round. Now there is a challenge! And our rookie: Maria Soper had her first hole-in-one on 5 North on October 23. an important notice By Peggy Iacovino To one and all, Choralaires of the past the present, or new faces who would like to sing, we WILL be having a Spring Concert on Friday, March 13, 2015. Spring singing is really fun! You don’t have to “read” music and do not have to “tryout”, just come and sing with us. Edna Smith, our director for over eighteen years, will once again lead us into song and let us have fun doing it. We look forward to seeing the “old familiar faces” and hopefully some new ones too. So come and join us and enjoy singing the new program she has planned.
We will start rehearsals on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. and also on Tuesday January 6, 2015, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Don’t forget to come! Preheat oven to 200 or 215 depending on your oven. Butter large roasting pan (I use two of the aluminum foil ones and spray them with buttery Pam and pour one and 1/4 bag in each one of them). In a three quart pan on stove melt the one cup of butter, add brown sugar and corn syrup. Bring to a boil and stir constantly with a wooden spoon for five (5) minutes. Remove from stove and add the ingredients below in this order: First - Vanilla, Second - Salt, Third - Baking Soda Keep stirring - it will turn foamy and a lighter color. Pour oven puffs in pan and stir to coat with wooden spoon. Bake one hour stirring every 15 minutes to coat. Cool on cookie sheets. (I put wax paper on the counter and cool there). Can be stored in tightly closed containers and freezes well. Recipe courtesy of Marty Riley
