LABOR DAY PARTY A good time was had by all at the Labor Day Party, hosted by the New York/New Jersey Club. It was really good to see our friends and neighbors who, due to COVID, we were unable to see over the past year. The food was delicious, music provided

by Matt Mentzer was a nice addition to the day, and an exciting game of bean bag baseball provided by Judy & Bill Machnicz ended triumphantly for the women.

The New York/New Jersey Club would like to thank all who worked so hard. Their efforts helped make this event such a success. Please forgive me if I missed anyone or was unable to

get the names right. WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS A warm welcome to the following new residents of Tara Woods! It was great to see many of you at our orientation on September 4th. We hope to see you at Saturday Morning Coffee or at the pool or at the many activities going on at our wonderful and active park. If you missed that date, or any previous orientations, you are encouraged to come to next month’s orientation, which will be held on Saturday, October 9th, at 10:00 AM in the Clubhouse Meeting Room.

Jann and Larry Anderson Jann and Larry reside on Lot #451, 19753 Cottonfield Road. They are parttime residents of Minnesota and have two children and two grandchildren.

Jann is a retired RN who still has an active license, and Larry retired as manager of a desk top publishing company of a foreign language translating company. In her spare time, Jann enjoys scrapbooking, listening to rock n’ roll and traveling, especially to Disney. Larry likes to watch TV, especially The History Channel and NCIS. Pat and John Bianco Pat and John live on Lot #353, 2837 Orlenes Street as full-time residents.

They are from Connecticut but lived in Florida at Tropical Palms for eighteen years before moving to Tara Woods.

John retired from Costco as a hearing dealer, and Pat retired as an X-ray and orthopedic technician. They have two children and two grandchildren.

Pat enjoys gardening, playing bocce, reading and watching TV. John likes playing bocce, tennis, billiards and pickleball, as well as reading.

Karen and Randy Collins Karen and Randy live on Lot #633, 2936 Tara Lakes Circle as full-time residents. They hail from New Jersey but have lived in Cape Coral since 1988. Randy still works for the City of Cape Coral in Parks and Recreation, and Karen works at Chico’s office. In their free time, both enjoy anything sports related.

Chris Finn and Jeff Fisher Chris and Jeff reside on Lot #540, 19836 Kara Circle. They are full-time residents from Ohio. Both still work, Chris at Express Script and Jeff at World Wide Flight Services. Chris likes to host an online radio program called “The Electric Jukebox Lounge with Shane Fisher” and Jeff enjoys swimming and walking.

Dotti Dukes, Mark DiRienzo, & Debi Fedele Dotti, Mark and Debi live on Lot #281, 2844 Steamboat Loop as full-time residents. They are originally from

Florida and Massachusetts. Dot retired from Ames Department Store and has five children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She enjoys swimming, reading and three-wheel biking. Mark does landscaping and enjoys the pool as well as fixing up the house. Debi is looking for work and enjoys the pool as well as being Mark’s assistant.

Judy Fleming Judy lives on Lot #329, 2838 Cloister Street as a full-time resident. She comes to us from New Jersey, where she retired from the reinsurance division for an insurance company. She enjoys Tai Chi and volunteering.

Marilyn Henderson Marilyn lives on Lot #655, 2955 Tara Lakes Circle. She is a computer programmer and continues to work.

Marilyn owns two horses and enjoys horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding and making jewelry.

Marsha works as a salesperson at Macy’s, and Raymond is a security officer. Marsha enjoys swimming, walking, dancing and riding her bicycle, while Raymond enjoys power walking, working out, reading and listening to talk radio.

Betty McDonagh and Liliana Townsend Betty (or Beatriz) and her daughter, Liliana, originally from New York, reside full-time on Lot #11, 19547 Charleston Circle. Betty has three children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and is retired from childcare. She enjoys walking and swimming as well as cooking, knitting and Bingo. Liliana works as a Petcierge (walking and caring for dogs). She enjoys going in the Jacuzzi, swimming, listening to bands at restaurants, ceramics and all things animals.

Susan Wood Susan lives on Lot #527, 2833 Darwin Street as a full-time resident from Minnesota. She has four children and seven grandchildren and is a retired RN. She is currently an active pastor.

Susan enjoys swimming at the beach as well as hiking and reading.

Janet and Harlan Spaulding Janet and Harlan reside on Lot #232, 2597 Macon Circle. They are full-time residents from Massachusetts, where Janet retired as a real estate agent, and Harlan retired from Hubble Light Control. They have two children.

Harlan likes fishing and they both like riding their motorcycles.

Cathie and Jack LaSelva Cathie and Jack reside on Lot #371, 2818 Orlenes Street as fulltime residents. They moved from Massachusetts and have one child.

Cathie is a retired Comcast technician and Jack retired from Amtrak. Cathie likes relaxing in the sun and Jack likes to go swimming.

Curt Maxwell and Heidi Wiskur Curt and his daughter, Heidi, live on Lot #508, 2838 Darwin Street.

They are full-time residents from Michigan, where Curt retired from General Motors. He has five children, eight grandchildren and twelve greatgrandchildren. Curt enjoys fishing, horseshoes and water aerobics.

Heidi continues to work as a branch coordinator and enjoys the pool.

Mark Mentzer Mark Mentzer lives on Lot #17, 19583 Charleston Circle as a fulltime resident. He is originally from Pennsylvania and still works online as a professor for the University of Maryland. Mark is the father of two children. He writes technical books and fiction and plays the keyboard.

Both are retired, Kathy from DuPont, and Randy as a project manager for trade shows. Kathy enjoys reading, doing puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and riding her bicycle. Randy likes watching sports, kayaking, and golfing.

Linda Schauer and Kim Doyle Linda and her daughter, Kim, reside on Lot #359, 2863 Orlenes Street. They are part-time residents from Wisconsin.

Linda is a retired homemaker as well as business owner, and Kim works as a police officer. Linda enjoys sewing clothes, doing ceramics and may be interested in Bingo. Kim also enjoys ceramics as well as swimming and Bingo.

Karen Silvers and John Lombardi Karen and John live on Lot #26, 19626 Charleston Circle as full-time residents. They are originally from New York state where Karen worked as a receptionist, and John was a New York City Sanitation worker. He is also an active butcher. They have three children and four grandchildren.

Karen enjoys nature and gardening, and John likes fishing and tinkering in the garden.

Sandra and Mark Wasie Sandra and Mark live on Lot #419, 19679 Pandora Circle. They will probably be full-time residents and are from Ohio, where Sandra owned her own dry cleaning business, and Mark retired from the Navy. They have

FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou While it has been an exciting and busy summer, the coming fall season is my favorite time of year. It is the time when many friends and neighbors return and we can reconnect and catch up. It is the time when the different Clubs and Groups formulate their plans to sponsor different events for residents.

Stay tuned! The ways to keep up to date are: • Reading The Columns newspaper which is delivered monthly to your home by a group of dedicated volunteers.

• Checking the Tara Woods Homeowners website (twhoa.net), and receiving the weekly ‘What’s Happening’ email in your inbox each Monday. All TWHA members have full access to the website.

• Check the bulletin boards in the Clubhouse advertising for upcoming events with specific details.

• Attend Saturday Morning Coffee starting at 7:45 AM, with a short, informational meeting starting at 8:45 AM. • Attend your Tara Woods Homeowners monthly meetings the second Monday night of the month.

The season already is shaping up to be busy, fun and informative. It is also a good time to volunteer.

There is no greater gift than volunteering your time for the benefit of others. Ask the many volunteers

who work behind the scenes to make our experience here exceptional. We thank them all! We have a big tent with room and need for additional volunteers.

ANOTHER HEADS UP – to all walkers/bikers out in the early morning or in the evening: you need to have sufficient lights to be recognized AND drivers need to be on the lookout for their neighbors. Thank you!

DID YOU KNOW THAT – your Tara Woods Homeowners Association Directors meet monthly with the Community Manager to discuss community issues and concerns. The minutes of these meetings are posted in the Clubhouse and on your TWHA website (twhoa.net).

ALSO DID YOU KNOW THAT – there is a copy machine in the Tara Woods Library for residents to use. Your choice – - make a copy at Publix for $.25 or HERE in Tara Woods for $.10 a copy. Talk about a great deal!

FMO NEWS TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

As we approach the return of our snowbirds, I hope that you had a pleasant summer and a safe return to Tara Woods. As I write this, I have not heard if meetings will start up in November. I encourage you to watch the bulletin board for meeting information.

Membership is the heart of any organization. Whether you take an active or passive role is up to you. The most important thing is to join. Dues currently are $25.00 per year or three years for $65.00 dollars. That’s just pennies a day to know that you have representation in Tallahassee. If you play Bingo or know someone who does, you can thank the FMO that allows you to play Bingo in Tara Woods. When the state legislature was looking for additional funding, it was the FMO in conjunction with Hometown America working together that helped stop the 7 ½% tax on your monthly rent.

If you haven’t renewed, I encourage you to do so. If you haven’t joined, like the Life commercial indicates: try it, you will like it. Applications and mail-in envelopes are on the back bulletin board. Please take one, fill it out and mail it in. I encourage you to join for three years.

It’s less expensive than joining each year. Do it once and don’t worry about it for three years.

A MINUTE WITH THE MANAGER Welcome Home!

We are excited to start welcoming back our Northern Residents!

Here are a few reminders for everyone as you’re getting back into the swing of things: • For those of you looking for reputable vendors to do repairs, plumbing, electric, A/C, roofing, or yard work, we have a list in the Office, and can give you the contact info. We update the list annually. Stop by and get a copy!

Also remember that if you are doing any exterior improvements/changes – you need to have it approved PRIOR to your contractor showing up.

• Did you know your horticulture remnants can be picked up right in front of your home? Just place them at the curb of your home; we have instructions in the Office for the appropriate disposal process. If you are unsure, we will be glad to give you a copy. Please do not dispose of this in the back and ensure that your lawn care provider knows as well.

• Please be mindful as the weather cools off,

and more people are returning – there are many more people walking and bicycling through the community. Let’s keep everyone safe!

• The return of our winter months also means that many will have family visiting. Please remember that we do not allow minors to drive the golf carts. Anyone driving the golf carts must be a licensed driver. No Exceptions.

As I write this, masks are currently still optional, but strongly encouraged, in the community buildings. They are required if you are coming into the Office, or meeting with a member of our team. Please be respectful of people’s choices.

November and December will surely prove to be busy, but let’s make sure we take the time to be thankful and stay in touch with neighbors and friends. We wish you all a very happy and healthy holiday season!

CHRISTMAS DECORATING

I know it’s only October, but Christmas will be here before you know it, and Tara Woods starts in November to decorate the Clubhouse and community.

This year, Peggy Gamble is spearheading decorating the community, and she would like your help. She would like to have a club or group take a section of the community, i.e. each of the islands down Tara Blvd., the Gazebo, the parking lot island, etc., just as the Dog Park Club did last year.

Please discuss this as your groups start meeting in October and submit to Peggy an idea

of what you would like to do. There are simple guidelines: no blow-ups; keep it classy. Working around a theme might make it easier to create an outstanding Christmas scene for the community to enjoy. At this time, any items used for decoration would remain the property of the club/group and they would be responsible for storage.

NEW IMAGE CHORUS We Are Back. The New Image Chorus, under the direction of Dave Adams, will start rehearsals for the 2021-2022 season on Monday, October 4th. Rehearsals are in the Clubhouse beginning each Monday at 12:30 PM and lasting approximately two hours. We welcome our new and returning members.

There are no auditions or tryouts to join – just a desire to meet and greet your neighbors.

Besides, singing is good for the lungs. If you need copies of the songs, we will be singing, please arrive a few minutes early. We will be singing the same songs we previously rehearsed prior to the Clubhouse being closed and our show cancelled.

We will be singing without our masks on. Because of COVID and in accordance with CDC and Hometown America safety requirements, we ask that if you have not been vaccinated, please refrain from attending chorus rehearsals. SATURDAY MORNING COFFEE HOSTS THROUGH THE YEARS: 2007-2021 (64) George and I have been hosting Saturday Morning Coffee since 2005. I don’t know when Saturday Morning Coffee started or how many people were involved. I do know that Joe Coniglio did it for many years on his own and Don Tarrance became the “Coffee Maker”, and continued doing that for us until he was no longer able due to illness. Not wanting to do this on our own every Saturday, we found some friends and neighbors who agreed to host on a rotating basis. As you can see, there has been quite a turnover over the years, with some hosts staying one year to three or four. Polly has been our Treasurer since 2007 (or thereabouts), taking over for Jon Gold.

I can’t thank her enough for staying with us and for being our Cashier every Saturday morning as well.

CERT BASIC TRAINING Fall is here and your CERT team is excited to share with you another opportunity for CERT Basic Training!

NFMFD (North Fort Myers Fire Department) is offering a Basic training class series beginning Tuesday, October 19th, 21st, 26th, 28th, 29th, at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center on Business 41. So far, we have four TW residents preregistered. Space availability is limited. We hope that you will decide to be part of the Tara Woods CERT team and sign up for training. If you can’t do the October training class, NFMFD plans to offer another class series in the spring.

Wow! Where did the summer go? It seems just the other day the snowbirds were heading back north – now they are heading back to our sunshine state and to our Tara Woods community.

“WELCOME BACK, SNOWBIRDS!” I hope upon your return you all got tested for COVID19, along with getting inoculated. As you well know, we are STILL not out of the woods – not quite yet. So, remember, I stress it by saying STAY SAFE, STRONG, and SMART. As you recall, I took the summer off for some R&R; unfortunately, I was hoping to visit Key West to see Jimmy Buffett and seeing if there was a “5 O’clock Somewhere” and have a tall salted cold margarita with him. But plans change, as the weather forecast had other ideas in store for this getaway.

As you well know, Hurricane Elsa formed July 1st and dissipated July 14th, so plans were canceled. Just a reminder: we still are in Hurricane Season until November 30th. At least we were spared from Hurricane Elsa though.

Still our prayers are for the folk who were hit

by Hurricane Ida, up north. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Oh well, so I spent the rest of the summer here in our Tara Woods community. During the summer, I lost of few of my close four-footed furry friends, which were quickly replaced by new ones: the loss of Kenn and Cheryl Linn’s Chinese Shar Pei, Shasha – with a new Shar Pei – Willow. New canine owners, Donna & Tom Erhardt, got a seven-month-old German Shepherd named Mac. The cutest new and youngest additions are Bean and Bear – two white miniature Schnauzer puppies; yes puppies – just like potato chips – you can’t just have one. Owners Paul and Carol Key went all the way to Tennessee for these pups to have two great parents. A newcomer in our community whose owners moved in two months ago is a King Charles Spaniel name Gretel. Owner Mark Mertzer – I think they already found our Dog Park, and finally, Diane, and the two new toy terriers – Chihuahua mixed breed pups – Carlos and Charlie.

As for me, I lost my co-pilot, Triska the cat; she passed away this August due to old age.

And for me, Shiloh, I put my paws back in a writing mode for your “Shiloh Speaks”, and I celebrated in August, my 16th birthday, and still have a lot of get up and go.

Anyway, I know I usually end my articles by saying “Please pick up after us – it’s YOUR TARA WOODS, KEEP IT CLEAN. So, since we have newcomers, need I say more?

Anyway, in this start of the fall and winter season of “Shiloh Speaks”, I’m addressing this:

“Where do pets come from?” It is reported in the following edition of the Book of Genesis, Adam said, “Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me every day, now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me.” God said, “No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself.”

God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam, and it was a good animal. God was pleased and the new animal was pleased to be with Adam, and he wagged his tail.

Adam said, “But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.” God said, “No problem!

Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.” And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him.

And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail. After a while, it came to pass that Adam’s guardian angel came to the Lord and said, “Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility.”

And the Lord said, “No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not worthy of adoration.”

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam, and when Adam gazed into Cat’s eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being.

And Adam learned humility, and God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved. And Cat did not care one way or the other.

Well, my time is up for this month’s “Shiloh Speaks.”

“Happy Halloween”, and just a reminder that our prayers are for the people who lost precious belongings up north from Hurricane Ida, and to all our troops and Americans that are still in Afghanistan; may they come home safe and unharmed.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen...October brings crisp mornings and the hint of fall…wait a minute. That was from another lifetime ago. Here in Florida, October brings the return of some of the “birds”; welcome back if you count yourself one of those. October also brings the Entertainers into the month of our first rehearsals.

By now Janet, our director, has told you when to show up, and rehearsals might have already started. I am sure they will be going great. As a reminder to those who are like me, bad memories, and also to the new residents: the Entertainers put on a play in the Clubhouse on the stage once a year.

The second weekend in March of 2022, we will be putting on the play “She Was Only Marginally Modest”. It is a funny melodrama located in Colorado in the 1880’s. Our challenges this year are many. One of the largest is the redeveloping COVID issues.

The other is rebuilding the set after it was torn down in 2020. We shall tackle these as they come, and I trust with everyone’s help, we shall overcome them. Hey, this is live theater and it is always a surprise and delight to be involved.

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION As we have not heard anything to the contrary, we are planning on having our return to a regular tennis season and will have more information in the coming months. We will then plan a meeting of the Tennis Association.

OPEN TENNIS The “open mixed doubles tennis” continued during the summer months, sometimes with only four or five people available to play. However, as the snowbirds return to Tara Woods, I’m sure there will be a lot more tennis players showing up to play. Feel free to join us every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts. If you have an interest in tennis, stop by

the courts and check us out.

We did pick up two new men tennis players to the Tennis Association and they have been playing with us on the Open Tennis days!

TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League No new information to report at this time. A sign-up sheet for the Men’s Tennis Teams was posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board last spring.

A DAY OF CARING 2021 Tara Woods is a very giving community. For those of you who have been here a few years, you know that. We have many ways for us to give to those less fortunate than us. For the new residents, A Day of Caring is one of the ways you can be a part of the “Magic of Tara Woods.” It was started over twenty years ago with three parks getting together for a common cause. Pine Lakes, Lake Fairways, and Tara Woods picked three charities that they helped locally.

The last few years, the charities have been: The Fort Myers Rescue Mission that presently provides housing and services to ninety residents, (many who were homeless), who are required to seek outside employment and to do work on the premises.

Catholic Charities that provide food and services for many families in need. The Catholic Charities’ share of donations goes to the Elizabeth Kay Galeana Center in Fort Myers.

Wake Up America that provides daily distribution of excess food from several markets to local food pantries.

I have been to each of these charities. I like to know my money is going to a good cause and only to that cause, not a big chunk in a CEO’s pocket. These three charities are excellent; you can be assured your money is being used wisely.

You will find in this October Columns, a letter from The Day of Caring with an envelope attached. This is for donations that can be mailed to Chris Olson, 19567 Cotton Bay (address is on the envelope), or put in the donation box in the Clubhouse, or handed to any Board member.

AND the best news, we are having our 2nd Quarter Auction on Thursday, November 11th, at the Clubhouse. For those of you who went to our first Quarter Auction in 2019, you know how much fun

it was. It also raised a lot of money for The Day of Caring.

On Saturday, October 2nd, we will have a dry run of a Quarter Auction, showing just what the heck it is!! It will be held right after the Meeting. Saturday Morning Coffee hour starts at 7:45 AM. RESIDENT APPRECIATION DAY The Resident Appreciation Day Committee will start planning for the 2022 Resident Appreciation Day Celebration. Because of COVID, it is expected that there will be some changes to the way we celebrate.

The Committee will be seeking input from the residents as to the theme of the event. To give you some idea, past themes were Western, Mardi Gras, Countries, etc. Please call Stuart Berman, 239-220-2369, or drop off your thoughts at Lot #670 Potomac Circle. The Clubhouse is decorated in the theme and the residents are asked to dress accordingly.

All planning will be in accordance with current CDC recommendations and Hometown America guidance, which will require that all equipment used must be wiped down prior to the next person’s use, masks where applicable, and social distancing as appropriate.

Every effort will be made to keep the residents informed as the planning details evolve. Resident Appreciation Day is usually the last Saturday in February. Because of COVID, it is possible the date will be revised to late March. It is hoped that by changing the date, more residents will be able to get their shots as well as the booster.

The decision to keep it open ONLY to Tara Woods residents was not done lightly. It was felt that it would create an unwarranted risk to the health and safety of our residents to attract a large crowd to mingle in a confined environment, largely unregulated, with regard to face masks and vaccinations. What to plant

Bedding Plants: Even though temperatures are still warm, begin planting for the cooler months ahead. Impatiens, alyssum, and dianthus are good plants for the fall/winter garden.

Bulbs: Plant agapanthus, rain lily,

and Clivia lily now for blooms next spring or summer.

Add organic matter to the planting bed for best results.

Herbs: A wide range of herbs can be planted from seed or transplants this month. Some to try are dill, fennel, parsley, and cilantro.

Vegetables: Plant crops now that will grow and produce through the winter months. This includes beet, English pea, carrot, garlic, and onion.

What to do

Lawn weeds: Control winter weeds in lawns before they appear. Pre-emergent herbicides should be applied when nighttime temps drop to 55-60°F for several consecutive nights.

Fertilize ornamental trees and shrubs: This is the last month of the year to fertilize shrubs and trees.

Controlled-release fertilizer provides nutrients over a longer period of time.

Fertilize lawns: For bahiagrass and centipedegrass lawns use a fertilizer (not a weed & feed) that contains controlled-release nitrogen for longer lasting results.

Choose one with little or no phosphorus unless a soil test indicates a need. This is the last lawn fertilization for the year.

Strawberries: Prepare beds and set strawberry plants this month. Strawberries also make a colorful and tasty container planting. Water daily until plants are established.

Fertilize Palms: Fertilize palms this month with 8-2-12+4Mg. Oleanders: The oleander caterpillar is a year-round resident in South Florida. To control without harming beneficial insects, prune off infested leaves or spray with BT (Bacillus thuringiensis).

Twig girdlers: Small branches falling from oak and hickory trees may be the work of twig girdlers. To control, clean up and destroy fallen branches, which may harbor young twig girdlers.

It’s finally time that we can get our great Club back together again! Our Welcome Back Party is being held on Saturday, October 23rd, at 5:00 PM, and we hope to see you all there! Any new residents from New England are also welcome; just sign up on the New England Club bulletin board in the Clubhouse. As always, sign-ups are mandatory for the count of food preparation and set-up. Club yearly dues of $5.00 per person are due upon arrival. Raffle tickets will be for sale and BYOB. On the menu, we will be safely serving Penne a la Carol, tossed salads, Italian Bread and butter, dessert and coffee. As I am sure many of you are (and should be) concerned about COVID, please rest assured, that all food items will be served. No buffet style, no lines to stand in, and the food servers will most definitely be gloved and masked. Your safety is

of the utmost concern.

We will also be playing a couple of fun games, one of which will be New England Bingo.

Everyone will receive a “New England” bingo card, but please bring your own 25 coins or mini poker chips to use on your own card. Daubers will not work, because you will only receive one card for the entire round of games.

For Tara Woods, it’s time to plan your costume for the Halloween Party on Saturday, October 30th, and soon after that get tickets for the Christmas Party and New Year’s Eve PARTY. Pandemic guidelines pending, we’re hoping to offer these parties, possibly with a limited attendance. Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase your tickets!

TAI CHI IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning Tuesday, October 5th, Tai Chi classes meet the same days, Tuesday and Thursday, but at a new time 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. The time change is necessary to accommodate The Entertainers group.

Tai Chi classes continue and are going strong in Tara Woods. A dedicated group of residents continued practice through the summer, under the patient and supportive guidance of our incredible instructor, Tony Fettig. Tai Chi students have progressed through the first twenty-four movements of the108 movement set. As we head into full “season”, we look forward to welcoming back our snowbirds who began classes with us in April, as well as any newbies who would like to begin Tai Chi. Tony will help you get caught up with the rest of the class.

When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse.

Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, six of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week.

What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing.

Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you.

What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally.

What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin.

First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation.

Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit.

Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable.

Just want to try outTai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

EXERCISE FOR SENIORS CURTIS IS BACK & HE IS LOOKING FOR YOU!!

Now is the time to get up and get going again. This is a total body workout that can be done standing or sitting down. It includes stretching, balance, cardio and light weights. Give it a try - nothing to lose and may even gain some muscle.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club suspended its meetings with the start of the COVID restrictions in March 2020. I am planning to resume on the first Thursday of December, (December 4th), assuming that nothing goes wrong before then. Free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods will be held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee.

The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer but may have to be shortened to finish by the end of the season. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. We will spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered will always be posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. You can attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it.

I have continued to provide my normal services in the park. I give private lessons and set

up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs.

Prepare yourself financially for illness … just in case

All of us hope to live long, healthy lives, so we do what we can to take care of ourselves through proper diet, exercise and avoiding unhealthy activities. However, none of us can predict our future, so it pays to be prepared for anything – including a serious physical illness or the onset of some type of mental incapacity, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Of course, you may never face these infirmities, but you should be aware that they could upset your long-term financial strategy and place considerable stress on your loved ones. What steps can you take to head off these threats?

First, make sure you know what your health insurance covers and how much you might have to pay out of pocket for treatment of illnesses such as cancer or kidney ailments. If you’re on Medicare (supplemented with Medigap) or Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C), you’ll want to know all about deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. However, if Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia is involved, Medicare may not cover the costs that could be incurred in an assisted living facility, so you may want to consult with a financial advisor, who can suggest ways of protecting yourself from long-term care costs, which can be quite high.

Your next move is to make sure you have adequate liquidity. It’s hard to predict how many out-of-pocket costs you could incur when coping with a serious illness, but it’s a good idea to have enough cash readily available, rather than dipping into your 401(k) or other retirement accounts. So, if you’re retired, you might want to keep up to a year’s worth of living expenses in a liquid, low-risk account.

Here’s another important step: Update your estate plan. Hopefully, if you have a serious illness, you’ll be able to recover. But it’s still a good idea to review your estate plan to ensure everything is in order, such as your will and your living trust, if you’ve created one. If you’ve kept up your life insurance, you’ll also want to ensure your premiums are still being paid. And don’t forget to review your beneficiary designations on your 401(k), insurance policies and other financial documents, since these designations can supersede the instructions in your will.

As part of your estate planning, you may want to include a durable power of attorney for finances, which allows you to name someone to manage your financial affairs if you become incapacitated, and a durable power of attorney for health care, which lets you name someone to make medical decisions for you if you’re unable to do so yourself. You may also create a health care directive or living will to express your wishes if you don’t have a power of attorney for health care, or the person named in a power of attorney for health care can’t be reached in an emergency. And since estate planning can be complex, you’ll certainly want to work with a legal professional, and possibly your tax and financial advisors, as well.

You might think it’s somewhat grim to prepare yourself financially in case you become seriously ill or if your life is touched by Alzheimer’s or another mental infirmity. But it’s a positive move – you’re protecting yourself and your loved ones from whatever life may throw at you.

CRIBBAGE

There’s a “new” game at Tara Woods. If you hear someone say, “fifteen two fifteen four” and you don’t think they’ve lost a screw or two, come and join us in the Card Room every Wednesday at 2:00 PM for a few games of Cribbage. The arrangement is fairly flexible since Cribbage can be played by 2 or 3 or 4 players. Just be there by 2 PM. Cards, cribbage boards and fun will be provided.

POKER, ANYONE? LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low.
