Valentine’s Day The Tara Woods Valentine’s Day party was held on Monday, February 14th, hosted by the New England Club. In attendance were twenty-four couples who were recognized for fifty years or more of wedded bliss.

We hope you are all getting settled in and can soon start enjoying the magic of Tara Woods. It was great to see so many of you at our last Orientation.

In fact, it was our largest one yet. The room was filled to capacity. What fun!!

If you missed that one, or any previous ones, you are encouraged to come to our next Orientation which will be on Saturday, March 12th, at 10:00 AM in the Clubhouse Meeting Room. We have a wealth of information to share with you. We hope to see you there. All are welcome!!

Bob and Neil Almeida Bob and Neil reside on Lot #335, 2814 Cloister Street Neil is Bob’s son, and they are full-time residents from Massachusetts. Bob is retired from running a fuel company. Neil is working from home doing billing. In their spare time, Bob enjoys playing pool and horseshoes while Neil enjoys TikTok. Lisa Cranston and John Trebish Lisa and John reside on Lot #392, 2765 Steamboat Loop as part-time residents from Ontario, Canada.

They have two children. Lisa is a retired teaching consultant for early years. John is a retired magna seating director. In their spare time, they both enjoy pickleball, golf and riding their bicycles.

Sarah Oakley Sarah resides on Lot #53, 19561 Cotton Bay as a full-time resident from Virginia. Sarah has one child. Sarah is a retired histology technician. In her free time, Sarah enjoys sewing, embroidery, decoupage, and quilting.

Sally and Mark DeGraaf Sally and Mark reside on Lot #288, 2872 Steamboat Loop. They are parttime residents from Michigan. They have one child and two grandchildren.

Sally is a housewife and retired bookkeeper for the business she and Mark owned. Mark is a semi-retired builder who owned his own business.

In her spare time, Sally is a line dance instructor. In his spare time, Mark enjoys hunting, fishing, and carpentry.

Patricia and Gordon Wade Patricia and Gordon reside on Lot #684, 19288 Potomac Circle. They are full-time residents from Indiana. They have two children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Patricia has been a speech pathologist for thirty-eight years, and Gordon has been a high school teacher for thirtyseven years. In her spare time, Patricia enjoys reading and the sunshine.

Sandra and Tom have six children and ten grandchildren. Sandra is currently working as a massage therapist. Tom is working as an electrician/project manager. In her spare time, Sandra enjoys golf, walking, riding her bike and boating. Tom enjoys golf and boating.

Thank you to the many residents who stepped up to do their part in ensuring a successful TWHA and Community. It literally does take a village. I’m reminded of that every day when I meet and talk with so many residents. Your advice, thoughts and feedback are important not only to me but to the entire Board.

Recently the publisher of The Columns newspaper stopped in to recognize and thank the people who make The Columns newspaper possible for us every month. There were nearly forty folks there. It is an excellent example of each person doing their part, and when added together, they produce and deliver a monthly newspaper that makes us all proud.

Membership in your Homeowners Association continues to grow. If you are already a member, we all thank you. If you want to get on board, the annual dues are still just $15.00 per household.

Don’t wait – see or contact our Membership Secretary, Barbara Werner-Lubich or any Board member.

Even with prices rising on everything, your Board has managed to keep the dues steady at $15.00. This

is no small feat in this current environment. Your Board is doing their part and asks that you do your part by joining.

Also, a special thank you to all the Clubs and groups that have stepped up to sponsor and run events for our enjoyment.

As some of our residents start thinking about heading north, remember one thing: to stay informed and up to date on all happenings here in Tara Woods, take along the TWHOA website (www.twhoa.net). You won’t miss out on a thing. The website is full of good and necessary information. Of course, TWHA members have full access to the entire website. Be sure to register on the website before you leave for the summer.

HEADS UP – you might have noticed some differences as you enter the Clubhouse from the portico. All information, brochures, coupons, Florida weekly newspaper, The Columns newspaper, etc. have been relocated to the library. In addition, the “aluminum can tab box” and the “lost and found bin” are now also located in the Library.

CERT NEWS Your Tara Woods CERT team had a busy February. We want to congratulate six of our team members who completed the five-day basic training at Del Tura sponsored by the NFMFD. Our scheduled training also included these events: February 15th: Triage Training February 19th: Pirate Parade traffic control February 21st: Firewise USA event at Herons Glen On Wednesday, March 2nd, CERT team members will train in a Disaster Drill on Shiloh Lane. Instructors from the NFMFD will be leading the four drill scenarios. On a lighter note, the NFMFD will host a CERT picnic on Friday, March 4th, for all area CERT teams.

On Monday, March 7th, and Monday, March 14th, CERT team members will be given a private tour of the Lee County Emergency Operations Center and Lee Control Dispatch Center.

Pictures of these events will be posted on the TWHOA website.

Many associations across the world utilize the services of an association management company to manage the day-to-day operations of their organizations.

The FMO Board of Directors went through a due diligence interview process with Partners in Association Management and has hired the firm to take over the operational duties effective December 2021. Partners in Association Management is the largest company of its kind in the State of Florida.

The firm has a strong reputation among its client associations (many of its customer associations have been with the firm over fifteen years) as well as its

staff (having been ranked as a Best Company to Work for by Florida Trend Magazine, nine different times since 2011).

Happy March! I cannot believe we will be heading into “official spring” soon! The weather has been amazing, and with this great weather it brings a lot of residents and guests walking, biking and being out and about in the community. PLEASE – have courtesy and respect to all. Drivers, please drive slowly through our beautiful community – and watch for those not driving. For those not driving, but walking or biking – please be aware of your surroundings and watch for vehicles, including golf carts. Drivers, bikers, and golf cart drivers – please obey all stop signs!

We hope everyone enjoyed all of the happenings with Resident Appreciation last month! There was a lot involved in the planning, and I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped!

A few community reminders about trash, recycling, and horticulture. ALL of these items are picked up at your driveway weekly as follows: Trash – Monday and Thursday.

Recycling – Tuesday – this includes broken down boxes, Horticulture – Wednesday – Palm fronds can be no more than four feet in length, and like tree branches and bushes, must be tied together.

Loose debris MUST be in a container (please be sure your container has drainage on the bottom in the event of rain – or be sure your container has a lid). Larger tree limbs should be no more than eight inches thick and two feet long.

Remember – there is no dumping in the maintenance area. The maintenance area, where the dumpsters and compactor are, is an “Employee Only” area, unless you have made prior arrangements with the management office.

If you have large items for pick-up, please call our Office and we will arrange with maintenance to pick up these items up at your home. Our maintenance yard is not for construction dumping. If you are having construction work done on your home, your contractor should make arrangements for disposal. This is above and beyond what is included in the trash service provided.

The Tiki Hut looks amazing – another huge shout out and thank you to all who were involved in getting it back in great condition!

The new countertop should outlast us all!

ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT’S GOING ON WITH TENNIS IN TARA WOODS? CHECK THE TENNIS BULLETIN BOARD ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR UPDATED INFORMATION ON WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH ALL TENNIS ACTIVITIES.

TENNIS ASSOCIATION I can’t believe we are in March already; the tennis season is flying by, with only one Round Robin event remaining. Once again, I encourage anyone interested to sign up to play. The sheet is posted in the hallway by the tennis courts. It is a fun event and a good opportunity to hang around afterwards, enjoy some refreshments, and socialize and meet others in the community.

There is also open tennis three days a week for your enjoyment. ~ Ed Sandre OPEN TENNIS The mixed doubles “Open Tennis” is played every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. Even when all four courts are filled with enthusiastic tennis players, we always make room for everyone who wants to play; we continually rotate players in so everyone gets to play.

All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts.

There is no need to sign up to play on those “Open Tennis” days – just show up at the tennis courts with a racquet and a desire to have some fun.

TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League: White Team We are halfway through the season, with 8 more matches to go. We are 8 games ahead of the secondplace team, Pine Lakes. Since last writing they have gained two games on us and we will play them again on Tuesday, March 8th, at home. That will be a good match to watch because we are evenly matched. There will be 4 matches before that date so I can’t tell just what position we will be in by then, but it will be an exciting match – so come out and support our team; we can always use the encouragement. ~ Fred Puhlfuerst

TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) New resident tennis players: There is still time to join our in-house TWIT League. TWIT is an internal tennis league for both men and women that allows players to move up or down their current positions, depending on their weekly points. The idea is that the player with the most points on each court can advance up to the next level, and the player with the least points on each court will move down to the next level.

We play on Thursdays at 9:00 AM and our level of play is considered mild competition. ~ Mike Renzulli

Blue Team The Mustangs tennis team has been very successful so far this season. With a match record of 21 wins and only 3 losses, we lead the Blue Division in the North Ft. Myers Community Tennis League.

Our 3 matches in February will be played as visitors – first at Pine Lakes, and then at Herons Glen against the Herons Glen Smashers, and then at Six Lakes. We look forward to these matches.

All games begin between 1:00 and 1:30 PM and usually take about 2 hours to complete.

ROUND ROBINS Our last Round Robin date is Saturday, March 26th, and we look forward to seeing everyone out on the courts! We had a great time last month, even though the weather was a little chilly when we first started, but everyone warmed up quickly and enjoyed themselves! As always, we will have refreshments after the play is finished for our “Happy Hour”. NEW IMAGE CHORUS Save the date. You are cordially invited to a performance of the New Image Chorus on Saturday evening, 7:00 PM, April 2nd, in the Clubhouse.

The Chorus will be singing some of your favorite tunes and you are encouraged to join in and sing along with us. In fact, the Chorus is looking for Sopranos. There are no tryouts, auditions, or even any special requirements.

All that is asked is that you devote two hours a week, currently Mondays from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM between late September and early April. We generally take the month of December off and attendance is NOT taken. You are volunteering.

CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (CPI) Interesting facts about the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and your Prospectus My name is Mike Renzulli, and I was recently appointed to the Statutory Rent Committee to represent the TWHA and homeowners with Hometown America. The committee consists of five members. I wanted to better understand the definition of CPI as defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics since the CPI is being used to calculate our annual lot rent increase. First, I needed to better understand what type of information is included in the CPI. I would like to share the definition.

There are eight major goods and services categories covered by the CPI The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change in prices over time that consumers pay for a basket of goods and services.

The three largest components of the CPI are housing, transportation, and food/beverages.

Although more than two hundred items are considered, you’ll find the eight major spending categories that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), help determine whether beneficiaries, and more specifically seniors, receive a raise. The major categories taken into consideration are Food, Housing, Apparel, Transportation, Medical Care, Recreation, Education, other goods, and services. Although most categories are focused on consumer increases, most businesses choose to base any increase of rent on the CPI. Since our lot rent is designed around the CPI

as established years ago even before Hometown America’s ownership, we should all have a better understanding of our individual prospectus.

This is the legal contract that must be adhered to not only by us but by Hometown America. All residents have one of four different prospectuses depending on when they purchased their homes.

So, if you are not aware of your prospectus, here is the info relating to rent increase criteria for the four different prospectuses. PA is CPI with no minimum % but 10% max increase, P1 and P2 are the same with CPI and a 3% minimum to a max of 10%, P3 is CPI with a minimum of 4% and a max of 10%. I encourage you to look at your prospectus to better understand your individual situations since the projected 7.2% annual advance in prices is anticipated and would be the largest since 1982. Also, keep in mind that the Park Rules and Regulations are the same for all prospectuses.

We as a committee are charged with making sure that all Florida Laws are complied with as they relate to any price increases. We do not negotiate rents. Please be aware that we will be diligent in our efforts to ensure that Hometown America complies. And we will fight for all of the dollars that are legally possible to be returned to the Tara Woods community, in the form of proper maintenance of the facility and, wherever possible, upgrades to our amenities that we currently enjoy. We want to help restore our community back to premier status.

MID-ATLANTIC SOCIAL CLUB NEWS We welcome Tara Woods residents from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and friends from all over the country. MIDWEST CLUB

Shiloh wants to remind you to set your clocks one hour ahead to observe Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, March 13th.

It’s hard to believe that last month was Groundhog Day, and Punxsutawney Phil told us by seeing his shadow that we were going to experience six more weeks of winter. Now on Sunday, March 20th, we’ll be welcoming the first day of spring.

During this month, we have a funny little green fellow doing some form of a jig, with tales from far and wide, and I heard from tales that if you find him, he’ll lead you to the end of his rainbow and find his “Pot of Gold”. I’m referring to “LUCKY” the Leprechaun who makes his appearance on Thursday, March 17th.

For the third year I’ve been on the hunt for him; I’m thinking maybe I should call my fellow Irish dog breeds to help locate him.

I’m referring to Irish Setter, Irish Terrier (hmmm, wondering if I’m related, after all I’m a Terrier) and an Irish Wolfhound.

Anyway, if once again I don’t find him on my way to Publix, and provided the shelves are not empty, due to people stockpiling, (as we see every day if we go grocery shopping), and our favorite items are not in stock (I’m referring to my “LUCKY CHARMS” cereal). They are magically delicious – hopefully they are “NOT” magically disappearing off the shelves. (I just wonder if I can order a box from Amazon?) Oh well!

Hello, Tara Woods! I am Celia Blotkamp, your new TWHA Activities Coordinator. First, I want to thank Janet Daly for her superhuman efforts in coordinating the events in our community.

I have lived here for two years at Lot #654 on Tara Lakes Circle. I am a retired teacher. I recently trained to become a member of your CERT team and currently serve as secretary. You may see me in the morning walking Bailey, our 23-pound Lhasa Apso. He also gets his golf cart ride at lunch and after dinner when the sun stays up longer.

As Activities Coordinator, I am responsible for events hosted by our Homeowners Association.

Our clubs have been so generous with their time and talents to host many events throughout

the year. For 2022, the only events without a host are Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

If your club is interested in organizing these, contact me by phone, text, or email.

Our annual Activities Planning Meeting with clubs, groups, and individuals for hosting events for 2022-23 is scheduled for Saturday, March 26th, at 9:30 AM in the Clubhouse. Please send a representative from your club or group to attend this meeting.

TAI CHI When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE in the Tara Woods Clubhouse.

Classes meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has 20 years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years’ experience in Tai Chi, five of those years as an instructor. He is a full- time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week.

Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind and body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing.

Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you.

What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation.

It has also been shown to help relieve stress, reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally.

What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin.

First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation.

Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit.

Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable.

Just want to try Tai Chi out before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case.

Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.

Now is the time to get up and get going again. This is a total body workout that can be done standing or sitting down. It includes stretching, balance, cardio and light weights.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen… we hope that you got a chance to either join in or watch the Pirate Parade on February 19th. The Entertainers spent many hours creating our golf carts to look pirate-like to help celebrate our Appreciation Week leading up to the parade on Saturday. We took the opportunity to advertise our play, and we hope you got a chance to enjoy our efforts.

Now we are in March. Our Entertainers will be putting the play “She Was Only Marginally Modest” on stage this month, so be sure to purchase your tickets at Saturday Morning Coffee or before Bingo on Tuesday night. In addition, the tickets will be on sale at the door for each performance. But to avoid wait time in line, we appreciate you purchasing your tickets ahead. If these times do not work for you, call Polly Brown at 239-246-2391; she will be able to help you.

The tickets are a donation of $8.00 per person.

The play will be on Friday, March 11th, and Saturday, March 12th.

Both will have the doors open at 6:30 PM and the show starts at 7:00 PM. On Sunday, March 13th, there will be a matinee, with doors opening at 1:30 PM and the show at 2:00 PM.

At our performances we do not allow food or drinks brought into the Clubhouse.

We have theater seating available, and if you prefer you may sit at the tables.

We will have ushers at the doors to assist you if needed.

As the President of the Entertainers and the Stage Manager, I am very proud of the members of the Entertainers. Each and every one of them has spent countless hours working toward a great production. As with most events in Tara Woods, it does take a village to create this production. It takes the people you see on stage, the ones you do not see, and all of the people in the audience. Each one of these people has a part to play. Make sure you do your part. Please show your appreciation by first purchasing your tickets, and then laughing and applauding while you sit in the audience.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club has resumed free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee.

All of the members this season have been beginners, so we have started with Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer and will be entirely covered before we move on to more advanced topics. We have already discussed Windows 11, and additional subjects will be selected as we go along.

We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer, if you want to follow along on it.

The arrangement is fairly flexible since Cribbage can be played by 2 or 3 or 4 players. Just be there by 2 PM. Cards, cribbage boards and fun will be provided.

POKER, ANYONE? LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low.
