Instead of HO! HO! HO!, this year it was WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! at Tara Woods on behalf of the Tara Woods Dog Park. Santa Bill Black was busy buying, assembling, and decorating with his Santa Helper, Dennis Harper. Two snowmen provided 24-hour surveillance and security for the mail dog and the 13 dogs of Christmas, which in 3 days, also

had 3 litters of puppies for a total of 17 little ones!

Through donations from the residents, all of the adult dogs were “adopted” and are wearing red bones around their necks with the name of their “adoptee” or the names of the pet (pets) of the adoptees!!

The puppies were not part of the adoption program this year, but bigger and better

plans are already being worked on for next year. So, if you would like adoption information on the puppies or would like to make a donation, please see Marie Ivens! It’s never too early!

On behalf of the Tara Woods Dog Park, we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy, Healthy 2021.

A warm welcome to the following new residents of Tara Woods.

Barbara and Wayne Adriance Barbara and Wayne Adriance join us as parttime residents from Maine. They live at Lot #461, 19666 Pandora Circle. Barbara retired from work in education, most recently as an assistant principal for grades one to three. Wayne retired as a mechanic for the Maine Turnpike. Barbara enjoys walking in the community and is looking forward to having a bicycle and doing activities in the water. Wayne is working on their home and enjoys spending time with new friends and laughing about the weather in Maine.

Lynne Chilberg and Mike Brimsek Lynne Chilberg and Mike Brimsek are part-time residents from Minnesota. They reside at Lot #429, 19723 Pandora Circle. Lynne retired after forty years as a dentist in her own practice and Mike is a retired electrical engineer for Minnesota Power. Lynne is an

avid quilter and enjoys walking, playing cribbage, reading and learning to play Mahjong. Mike enjoys making models, riding his bike, sitting on the beach and swimming in the pool as well as in the gulf.

Pam and Robert Koss Pam and Robert Koss are full-time residents from Indiana. They live at Lot #425, 19707 Pandora Circle. Pam retired from nursing management and restaurant work while Robert is still working as a truck driver for UPS. They have two children and two grandchildren. Pam likes crafting, cooking and walking the dog. Robert enjoys fishing, kayaking and riding his motorcycle.

The next New Residents Orientation will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021 in the Clubhouse at 10:00 AM.

We are fortunate to have committee heads and committees that continue to demonstrate the best of Tara Woods. If you are one of these special people, all of us thank you! DID YOU KNOW THAT – Hometown’s four-sided exterior home inspections will resume in January 2021. Now is a good time to take a close look at your house, car port, bushes and trees to ensure that they are in compliance with the rules and regulations which are part of your prospectus.

FMO NEWS: TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS Now that the elections are over it is important to know when our Legislators are to be in Tallahassee for Committee meetings and Sessions. The following information is from the FMO Watchdog.

Committees: January 11th – 15th; January 25th – 29th; February 1st – 5th; February 8th – 12th; February 15th – 19th. Session dates are March 2nd – April 30th.

Now is an excellent time to reach out to strengthen your ties with these Legislators and their Legislative Aides and District Secretaries.

appointments have not been finalized.

The FMO is YOUR voice in Tallahassee.

DAY OF CARING REPORT Good Day. I received this thank you note from “Wake Up America” the other day. However, it should be addressed to the sixty wonderful people here at Tara Woods who have donated to the Day of Caring.

You were the ones who made this happen. What happened? Well, we are almost at our goal.

In spite of COVID, and all the weirdness of this last year, we are only $16.00 from our goal of $2000.00 collected this year for the Day of Caring Charities as of Dec 10th, 2020.

We have one more week to meet our goal. I am confident we will reach it.

Thanks to each and every one of you. For those of you who just could not donate this year, we Bless you too.

Looking forward to next year’s Day of Caring collection as I know we will be able to have the Quarter Auction again.

Because of COVID, the Residents Appreciation Day Committee consistently thought outside the box to determine a way to ensure that the residents were recognized for their commitment and dedication to following the rules to ensure a safe community for our residents and workers.

While the committee realized that most of the activities would have to be cancelled, it was hoped that Hometown America and the Committee could put on a nice luncheon for the residents. Ways were looked at for limiting the use of the Clubhouse. Food preparation and distribution would be done via drive-thru.

Unfortunately, this could not come to being.

With the spike in COVID cases, Hometown America made the difficult decision to totally cancel the function. Following CDC Guidelines, it would be dangerous to bring food in, repackage it and distribute to the residents.

BEING A FRIEND The Beatles sang, “I get by with a little help from my friends”… James Taylor sang, “You’ve got a Friend”... Barbra Streisand sang, “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world”. These songs and many more like them share this basic truth...as the Good Book says, “we are not meant to be alone”...we are created for relationship with each other and with the plants and animals in our word. So, let’s consider some suggestions on being a friend.

THE BLESSINGS AND PAIN OF BEING A FRIEND As we age, we’re going to have to say farewell to good friends. I have had to do this too often as I age. But the memories of those long friendships linger on after death, and I’m grateful I took the time and effort to make and keep those friendships.

FRIENDSHIPS THAT WORK TAKE WORK Whether husband and wife, parent and child, brother and sister, friend, and friend…enjoying such friendships take work. I had a great friend, and looking at our friendship, you might think the relationship was one-sided because I did most of the work to keep the friendship going.

I made most of the phone calls and set up our

schedule to meet but the friendship was so important to both of us that I was willing, indeed glad, to make sure the friendship continued over many years.

YOU AND YOUR FRIENDSHIPS How many friendships do you have and what are they like? Try this exercise. Take a sheet of paper and put yourself in the middle of the sheet. Then put the people in your life around the edges of the paper. Spouse, child, parent, brother, sister, friend, all the people in your life.

Then draw a line between you and each of these persons and on that line rate that relationship. If the relationship is a 7, what do you need to do to make it a 10 for the best possible friendship.

If a relationship is a 2 or 3 or less, and isn’t good for you or that person, should you stop that relationship?

The Good Book says, “it is not good to be alone”. So, enjoy and nourish the gift of friendship. Thanks for listening, and next time we’ll consider the most important ingredient for getting well, and, staying well...a Healthy, Hearty Spirit.

Financial Moves for the Recently Divorced

Divorce is common in our society, but that doesn’t make it any easier to navigate. If you’ve recently finalized a divorce, you’ve likely been coping with uncertainty and tension, but you can still avoid turning an already difficult situation into one that’s even more challenging.

How? By making the right financial and investment moves, including the following: • Establish your separate financial presence. Even when you were married, you and your spouse might have maintained some separate accounts.

But if you only had joint accounts, now is the time to open your own checking, savings and credit accounts.

• Update your budget. It’s likely your budget needs updating. Your household income may be lower or may need to be adjusted for alimony or child support (paid or received). Additionally, your living expenses may have shifted, either higher because you’re no longer splitting expenses such as housing or utilities, or possibly lower because you’re no longer supporting your ex’s spending habits. Understanding your new budget will help you feel better informed about your financial options and more in control of your new situation.

• Prioritize emergency savings. Divorce is expensive and may have depleted your savings. To get back on your feet, you may want to build an easily accessible source of funds for unexpected drops in income and/or spikes in expenses. If you’re not retired, you may want to keep three to six months’ worth of expenses in emergency savings, although even much smaller amounts can boost your feelings of financial security.

• Evaluate your retirement plan contributions. When you were married, you may have been counting on sharing resources and expenses with your spouse in retirement. But now, you may be solely responsible for your retirement, so if you can afford it, you may want to ramp up your retirement plan contributions. You may want to consult a financial professional about setting and achieving new goals.

• Think about Social Security. Your divorce could play a role in the benefits you can receive. Once you are eligible for benefits, if you were married at least 10 years and you haven’t remarried, you might be able to receive up to 50% of your ex-spouse’s benefits, offset by your own benefit. If your ex passes away and you haven’t remarried (or you remarry only after age 60), you could receive 100% of their benefit in place of your own. This could be beneficial if your ex-spouse had a higher income or spent longer in the labor force. Since rules can be complicated, contact your local Social Security office to better understand your situation, and keep a record of your ex’s Social Security number.

• Review your beneficiary designations and legal documents. You’ll likely need to revise the beneficiary designations on your retirement accounts and life insurance policies. These designations carry a lot of weight and can even supersede the instructions in your will.

And, speaking of your will, you’ll likely need to revise it too, along with other legal documents, such as a living trust.

Consult with your legal professional to make these revisions.

It can feel like a long road to stability after a divorce – but by following the above suggestions, you may be able to make the trip a little less bumpy – and hopefully shorter – as well.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen...January of 2021 finds us still wearing masks and physically distancing from those we most want to hang out with. Back in March, I never thought that this COVID virus problem would still be plaguing us ten months later. But here we are. Please keep in mind that we need to keep our spirits up as we move slowly through the pandemic.

As tough as these days are, we can still make it a good day. One day this will be behind us. I suggest that each morning you wake up and say to yourself, “I am not in jail, I am not in a mental hospital and not in a grave – I am going to have a very good day.”

For the play, which we are still hoping will be a go in March of 2021, we will be performing 2 radio plays. Some of you might remember old radio shows, fondly, I hope. We will be sharing “Fibber Magee and Molly”. Our troop of Entertainers will be taking themselves, and hopefully you, back to the years of late 1940’s and early 1950’s. We are relying on the Tara Woods crack Sound & Lighting team to help take us back to before TV when family entertainment

was around the radio listening, most likely in the living room with Mom and Dad sitting on the davenport while the kids laid on the floor. While we will not be asking you to lay on the floor, we will ask that you all follow the guidelines set by Hometown for the Clubhouse.

As we get closer, I will share with you how these guidelines will be impacting our audience. But for now, mark your calendars for the second weekend in March – night performances on Friday, the 12th, and Saturday, the 13th, with an addition of Sunday, the 14th for a matinee.

NEW IMAGE CHORUS The New Image Chorus wishes Tara Woods Residents a very happy, healthy and safe 2021.

COVID LOCKDOWNS Medical experts in London today were asked if it is time to ease the COVID lockdowns: • Allergists were in favor of scratching it, but Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

• Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but Neurologists thought the government had a lot of nerve.

• Obstetricians felt certain everyone was laboring under a misconception, while Ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted.

• Many Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!”, while Pediatricians said, “Oh, grow up!”.

• Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was

madness, while Radiologists could see right through it.

• Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and Pharmacists claimed it would be a bitter pill to swallow.

• Plastic Surgeons opined that this proposal would “put a whole new face on the matter”.

• Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but Urologists were pissed off by the whole idea.

• Anesthetists thought the whole idea was a gas, and Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.

• In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the ##### in politics.

REMEMBERING JACK BOYLAN On a palm tree in front of the Sparany house on Tara Lakes Circle is a soldier. This soldier was made by a beloved resident who passed away a few years ago, Jack Boylan. TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB Welcome back to our Winter residents! The Tara Woods Computer Club has suspended its meetings since the start of the COVID restrictions in March. These meetings will resume on Thursday, January 7th, if conditions allow, or on the first Thursday of the first month that the Clubhouse is open. Free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods will be held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee.

The first and third Thursday of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer.

The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for general subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want.

We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse.

Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow

along on it.

I have continued to provide my normal services in the park. I give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs.

GOLF CART PARADE The annual Golf Cart Parade goes on.

Residents gathered in the parking lot of the Clubhouse on a Florida cool clear evening. Santa Claus, accompanied by Mrs. Claus, led the parade throughout the community. Each cart was more creative than the last. The imagination of our residents always is amazing, this year was no exception. This was a great way to ring in the Holiday Season.

A New Year Resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere, but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to continue good practice and change an undesired trait or behavior to accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve

their life.

Even though 2020 gave us a lot of obstacles, somehow most of us were able to survive COVID-19 by staying safe, strong, and smart, when setbacks happened during those trying months.

Hopefully, 2021 will be less stressful and we will experience a prosperous HAPPY NEW YEAR. Well, my time is up for this month’s Shiloh Speaks. A reminder, as always, to pick up after us. For people new to Tara Woods, we have what we call “open tennis” from 9:00 – 10:30 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. If you have an interest in tennis, stop by the courts and check it out.

TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League There is nothing new to report this month for any of the Men’s League teams, as there is no league activity because of the coronavirus.

TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) Since we are not having league tennis competition this year, we have decided to create an internal weekly schedule of tennis for both men and women. Several years ago, Dick Heffron created a game called TWIT

(Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis). We will be playing TWIT in Tara Woods every Thursday at 10:30 AM. The concept is simple. There will be 4 players assigned to each court. Each player gets to play 8 games with each of the other people on that court, for a total of 24 games. Within each foursome, each player will get a point for every game they win. At the end of each match that day, the player with the most points moves up to the next level the following week, and the player with the least points moves down to a lesser level and plays with a new foursome.

Currently we have 16 players for the 4 courts. If others decide to join, we can add additional courts for every 4 players.

This is strictly social tennis; no prizes, no fees.

– Dick Heffron and Mike Renzulli Women’s League Women’s Team – Angels There is nothing new to report this month for the Women’s League, as there is no league activity because of the coronavirus.

Please note that the women still play tennis on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. If you are new to Tara Woods and want to learn about our team, come on out to the tennis courts on one of those days.

In last month’s issue of The Columns, I gave you a little recent history on the Women’s Tennis Teams from Tara Woods since I joined the team in 2010. I thought it would be interesting to go back further to see just how the Angels tennis team was formed in Tara Woods. The following is from information I received from the collective memory of Jane Maher and Dawn Benjamin.

The Women’s Tennis Team was organized in 1996

by Jane Maher. The team name of the “Angels” was suggested by Jackie Sullivan, as she was very fond of

angels of any kind. Jane Maher was the first Captain.

Mary Ann Craig took over as Captain for a few years and then Dawn Benjamin became the Captain.

Some of the team members, as recalled by Jane Maher and Dawn Benjamin, included: Dawn Benjamin, June Buer, Mary Ann Craig, Jane DeGuire, Mary Helen DeLang, Martha Ewing, Addy Fratantuono, Marge Hosek, Florence Jacobs, Henri La Liberty, Jane Maher, Jackie Sullivan, Ann West, and Elaine Wood.

Jane Maher indicated that the team’s tennis tops were designed by the mother of Dave St. Laurent. She also said that they had great fun playing on the team.

If more “history” information is learned over the next few months, I will try to publish it here.

– Linda Engel ROUND ROBINS Our new January 2021 tennis season is here. We had the opening of Round Robin events with a gettogether on November 22nd. We did have a small turnout with just 12 players – 3 courts with 3 sets played on each.

We do not know if more players will take part in future events. We have 3 more Round Robins scheduled for this season. We did suspend the snacks and drinks we used to arrange for everyone; we have asked players to provide their own.

As more members return to Tara Woods, we will consider any changes that can be made which will be set in place and hope more players will participate in future matches.

The next Round Robin is set for January 24th.

ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES With the holidays behind us, it’s time to look ahead to a new year. In this transition year, let’s hope we can ring in the new with an open mind as to how our world has been changed and accept the new reality with less fear and trepidation as the virus is slowly eradicated. It was a difficult and scary 2020. Soon we will have a chance to start over. At this time, we don’t know what changes will come or what the Tara Woods parties and activities will look like. We are a creative group of seniors and I’m sure there will be some outstanding events in our future.

Thank you also to Santa (Bob Clark) for all his work upgrading the trailer for the sleigh and to his little helper, Sue Clark, for sprucing up the sleigh for its journey through the community. Thank you also to everyone who participated in the parade and to those who watched and waved and shared Christmas greetings along the way. It was a fun time, and I was especially glad to see everyone adhering to the mask and social distancing rules. I’m glad we could continue this Tara Woods tradition safely.

I am pleased to welcome Peggy Gamble as the new head of the outside decorating committee for 2021.

She and her husband, Dave, were instrumental in gathering a group of people and decorating this past December. She has a lot of new ideas and is eager to implement them for the coming holiday season. We all look forward to what’s in store for December 2021.

The Garden Club wishes Everyone a Very Happy New Year Hope everyone and all your loved ones are healthy. I am writing this before we really know what is happening with the vaccine. Until we know more about what is happening with the pandemic, I see no way to for us to have any of our usual activities, or a meeting. Hopefully, this new year will bring us back our freedoms. We will continue to review the situation.

In the meantime, we ask that everyone please treat the Butterfly Garden with respect. A great deal of time and money is put into it for everyone to enjoy.

It is a safe haven for the butterflies and a tranquil place for us to sit and enjoy.

No garbage should be thrown in it, and please pick up after your dog if you are walking by the garden and he/she decides this is a great place to do their duty.

Did you know: There are more than 20 butterflies and moths listed as endangered, by the

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Most of these species are found in the United States and may become extinct due to loss of their habitat.

More than 765 species of butterflies occur in North America, north of Mexico. Florida is home to a total of 187 butterfly species, the most of any state east of the Mississippi River. You can help butterflies in your own back yard by growing both host plants for larvae and nectar plants for adults. Visit the University of Florida’s website for a list of plants you can grow to benefit butterflies in your particular region of the state.

One of these butterflies is: The Florida Monarch butterfly whose population has dropped 80 percent since 2005 (from November 8th, 2018, Florida Museum of Natural History). A 37-year survey of Monarch populations in North Central Florida shows that caterpillars and butterflies have been declining since 1985 and have dropped by 80 percent since 2005. They found that Monarch’s springtime departure from Mexico is timed to coincide

with optimal growth of milkweed in the southeastern U.S. While adult Monarch butterflies can feed from a variety of plants, their young depend on milkweed as their sole source of nutrition, storing up the plant’s toxins to ward off predators. The Monarch butterfly will lay hundreds of eggs on milkweed over their brief lifetimes, but just over 2 percent of eggs survive to become fully grown caterpillars.

We can help the Monarch by: 1. Not Using pesticides in Our Gardens.

2. Planting Native Milkweed.

3. Create a Monarch Way-Station.

4. Learn More.

5. Spread the Word Some butterfly gardeners have spoken to Linda Hoos about native milkweed and other native butterfly plants. There are two native nurseries Bill Milligan told Linda about: All Native Plants and Landscape in Fort Myers, 239-939-9663.

There is also one on Sanibel called SCCF Native Landscape, 239-472-1932.

Don’t forget when your milkweeds get leggy and you start to see new growth at the bottom you can cut your plants back to six inches.

If you plant butterfly plants in rotation, then you will always have nectar and host plants available and your butterflies will love you.

By Linda Hoos JANUARY WHAT TO PLANT Bedding Plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include begonia, browallia, lobelia, dianthus, dusty miller, and nicotiana.

Irrigation: Plants may need water if temperatures remain higher than normal and rainfall is scarce.

Shrubs and Trees: Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form.

Bulbs: Winter is a great time to plant bulbs that will bloom this spring.

Some to try are Clivia lily, crinum, and agapanthus.

Arbor Day: Florida observes Arbor Day on the 3rd Friday of January. To celebrate, plant a tree in your yard or community.

Herbs: Many herbs will thrive now that temperatures are cooler, including tarragon, thyme, dill, fennel, and any of the mints.

Cold Protection: If a frost or freeze is predicted, bring sensitive plants like orchids inside. Water sensitive plants in the landscape thoroughly 12-24 hours before a freeze and cover.

Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops including beet, cabbage, turnip, lettuce, and broccoli.

WHAT TO DO Rejuvenate the landscape: After the danger of freezing temperatures, it’s a good time to plant woody shrubs. Water frequently to get new plantings off to a
