CREATIVE

Meet Mallory “Mal” Harper of Moana Monroe

Photography, a talented photographer based here in Galveston, TX. With a distinctive style that captures the beauty and spirit of island life, Mal brings creativity and authenticity to every shot. Her work is captivating, telling unique stories through her lens. In this exclusive Q&A, we get an inside look at Mal’s journey, inspirations, and the art behind her unforgettable images.

Q. How do you stay creative?

Creativity is in my blood; it’s something I’ve carried with me for as long as I can remember. But like any artist, there are times when I feel like I’ve lost that spark. When that happens, nature is my remedy. The ocean, the sand beneath my feet, the sound of the waves—it’s where I feel at peace. Just me and my camera on the beach, capturing the beauty of the world around me, is all it takes to bring that creativity roaring back to life.

Q. Can you describe a time when you had to capture a subject or event that was outside of your comfort zone?

Ah, dads! They’re always the wild cards. Most of the time, they’re the ones who aren’t super excited about getting in front of the camera, and that can definitely push me outside of my comfort zone. But honestly, I love the challenge. I make it quick, easy, and, above all, fun. I focus on making them feel comfortable and respected, giving them the space to relax and enjoy the moment as much as possible.

Q. How would you describe your style?

My style shifts depending on the energy of the session. If we’re on the beach, I lean into those bright, vibrant tones that showcase the sunset’s beauty. If it’s a formal event, the tones become warmer and more polished. But no matter what, I aim to capture the truth of what’s in front of me. I’m not here to over-edit or reshape reality. I want my images to be an authentic reflection of what’s already beautiful, naturally.

Q. How do you ensure that your photographs tell a story or convey a message?

My goal has always been to be a visual storyteller. People often don’t see themselves as others do—we’re so critical of ourselves. So, I strive to show my clients the raw, unfiltered beauty in who they are. I focus on those candid moments because that’s where the story lies. When you’re comfortable, when you’re truly yourself— that’s where the magic happens, and that’s the story I want to tell with every shot.

CREATIVE MINDS

Q. How do you handle feedback or criticism from clients?

I welcome constructive criticism with open arms. It’s how I grow and get better. Another person’s perspective can offer insights I may not have seen, and I appreciate that. When it comes to negative feedback, I hear it, but I also maintain balance. At the end of the day, this is my art, my vision. If I feel connected to my work and it fills my soul, then that’s what matters most.

Q. What inspired you to pursue photography?

A. In 2023, I lost my dad, my biggest supporter when it came to my creativity. After he passed, I found myself searching for something that would reignite that creative spark he always believed in. So, in 2024, I decided to challenge myself and bought my first camera for Christmas. It started as a personal challenge, but by New Year’s Eve, I was offering free beach sessions to anyone willing to show up. A few families did, and something clicked. I fell in love with photography that day, and since then, I haven’t looked back. In less than a year, I’ve done almost 100 shoots, and I use my camera nearly every day. It’s become my passion, my therapy, my way of connecting with the world and filling my soul.
