ISLAND HISTORY Club D'Elegance A Piece of Galveston's Black History For more than five decades, Club D’Elegance stood near 28th Street and Seawall Boulevard as more than just a neighborhood establishment, it was a gathering place that became part of Galveston’s African American history. Located at 2816 Avenue R ½, the club was part of a legacy established by local African American businessmen and civic leaders, including brothers Donald O. Allen and Danny Allen. Before Club D’Elegance became a longtime fixture, the brothers operated businesses along the Seawall, including Dan & Don’s, helping establish a lasting presence in one of Galveston’s most recognizable areas. Over the years, Club D’Elegance became known as a neighborhood social club and gathering spot, serving generations of Galvestonians. spaces where the community could come together, socialize, and build connections. After more than 50 years, Club D’Elegance eventually closed as the area underwent redevelopment. In 2018, the property took on a new life as Beerfoot Beach Bar, later becoming Beerfoot Brewery. While the building and business have changed, the location remains a reminder of the many people and businesses that have shaped Galveston’s Seawall over the years. The story of Club D’Elegance is about more than a building. It is part of the story of Black entrepreneurship, community, and nightlife in Galveston, a reminder that the island’s history extends far beyond its beaches and historic architecture. As Galveston continues to grow and change, remembering places like Club D’Elegance helps preserve the stories of the people who helped make the island what it is today.

Island Vibe Magazine was born from a simple idea: Galveston deserved a publication that truly reflected the people, businesses, creativity, and culture that make the island special. As creatives and members of the Galveston community, Stormie King and Lili DeLeon saw an opportunity to create something different, a magazine that went beyond the typical tourist experience and highlighted the local people, businesses, stories, and experiences that give Galveston its character. What began as a creative vision grew into Island Vibe Magazine, a free community publication created to connect residents and visitors with the people, places, history, food, events, and experiences that make the island unique. From local businesses and restaurants to artists, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and pieces of Galveston’s rich history, Island Vibe was created to showcase the island through a local perspective. As the magazine continues to grow, so does its involvement in the community through partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and creatives. Features such as Creative Minds, Hidden Gems, Let’s Eat, Island History, Things to Do, and Night Vibes allow each issue to explore a different side of island life. Today, Island Vibe is more than a magazine. It has become a platform for storytelling, community connection, and local pride. • The city hosts annual sandcastle competitions, attracting artists from across the U.S. • Galveston has a Pink Dolphin Monument honoring LGBTQ+ history, one of the first in the southern U.S. • Some of the coyotes on Galveston aren’t typical coyotes. Genetic studies have shown that many carry ancestry from the endangered red wolf, a species nearly extinct in the wild. These hybrid canines are popularly called “ghost wolves.”
