S P O T L I G H T For years, the Galveston County Food Bank (GCFB) has quietly served as a lifeline for families across our community, providing nutritious meals, support services, and hope to those in need. Their mission has always been about more than food: it’s about dignity, stability, and giving neighbors a hand up during difficult times. But in this season of increasing food insecurity, their work has never mattered more. That’s why we’re especially grateful for the support of Moody Bank. In October 2025, Moody Bank launched a statewide initiative to donate to area food banks and community organizations, including the Galveston County Food Bank, to help Texas families affected by the suspension of SNAP benefits. With donations from Moody Bank and the dedication of GCFB staff and volunteers, mobile pantries, children’s nutrition outreach, homebound delivery, and other key programs have been able to continue. Through actions like this, our community is reminded that when local banks, nonprofits, and neighbors stand together, we all rise. Island Vibe Magazine is honored to spotlight their partnership, and encourage readers to learn more, donate, or volunteer.

This month, we’re featuring Stephanie Silva, the creative force behind Salt & Glow Electrolytes. Blending her passion for wellness with inspiration drawn from island life, Stephanie has built a refreshing hydration brand rooted in clean ingredients and coastal flavor. Her work reflects a bright, thoughtful vision that continues to bring something unique to our island community.
Q. What inspired you to start your electrolyte brand, and what gap did you see in the market that motivated you to create it?
A.
I started Salt & Glow Electrolytes because so many options were either overly salty, full of sugar, or tasted artificial. Nothing felt clean, refreshing, or enjoyable to drink every day. As someone who stays busy with teaching and coaching dance I needed hydration that actually tasted good and aligned what I knew about proper fueling. After graduating with my Masters in Sports Nutrition last May, I became even more aware of how important balanced electrolytes are. That inspired me to create a product that offered real hydration, clean ingredients, and flavors inspired by the island I love on: Galveston.
Q. How do you approach developing new flavors or formulas that stand out from what’s already on the shelves?
A. A huge part of my process comes from living on an island. I draw inspiration from the ocean, the sunsets, and the natural fruit profiles that fit a coastal vibe. I love combining unexpected but complementary flavors, like Golden Guava or Blue Tide, to create blends that feel unique, uplifting, and tied to the place we call home. Each flavor has its own story, and my goal is for every sip to feel like a moment of on the beach.
Q. What has been one of the biggest challenges in growing your company, and how did you overcome it? A. One of the biggest challenges in growing my company has been turning social media views into real
engagement. I would post consistently, but people weren’t commenting, sharing, or participating the way I hoped. It was discouraging at first because I knew the product was good. I just needed a way to get people involved instead of silently watching. content. I ran a giveaway on Facebook to spark excitement and reach new customers, and it worked, people love having a reason to jump in. I also began using frequent polls on Instagram to make my audience feel included in flavor ideas, packaging decisions, and behind-the-scenes choices. Once I made it fun and participatory, engagement grew naturally and the community around my brand became much more active.
Q. How do you see the role of hydration and wellness evolving, and where does your brand fit into that future?
A. Hydration and wellness are becoming more personalized, intentional, and part of people’s everyday
routines, not just something athletes think about. More people are starting to understand that staying hydrated affects everything: energy, mood, recovery, and overall well-being. As this shift continues, consumers are looking for cleaner formulas, better flavors, and brands they actually trust. Salt & Glow fits into that future by offering simple, delicious electrolyte blends inspired by the island we live on. Our flavors are made to feel refreshing, natural, and enjoyable, not overwhelming or artificial. We focus on clean ingredients, great taste, and a lifestyle approach to hydration that feels fun and sustainable. As wellness keeps moving toward mindful, daily rituals, Salt & Glow is designed to be the electrolyte people actually look forward to drinking.
Q. If you could create a limited-edition electrolyte flavor inspired by your personality, what would it be called and what would it taste like?
A. The electrolyte would be called Sun Kissed! The flavors would be mango, orange, and lime. It reflects who I am: warm, lively, a little bold, and always chasing that vibrant island energy we’re surrounded by. It’s a flavor that feels refreshing, uplifting, and full of glow, which is exactly the spirit I try to bring into my brand and into everything I do. Also being sun kissed gives me all the good vibes and makes me so happy.

ISLA ND HISTORY As Christmas rolls onto Galveston Island, the whole place starts to glow with that cozy, coastal holiday magic you can’t find anywhere else. The palm trees get wrapped in lights, the Strand fills with holiday shopper with their family, and the salty breeze mixes with the smell of cinnamon, cocoa, and someone’s famous holiday casserole. It’s festive, it’s laid back, and it feels like home. Around here, Christmas isn’t just about presents under the tree, it’s about people. About neighbors helping neighbors, families opening their doors, and the kind of generosity that feels as natural as a Gulf sunset. And no one captures that spirit better than The Jesse Tree. For decades, The Jesse Tree has been one of Galveston’s quiet heroes. They’ve stepped up after storms, supported families through hard seasons, and made sure those who need a little extra love get it, especially during the holidays. When December hits, their headquarters practically transforms into Santa’s coastal workshop. They spend weeks preparing for the season in a way that reflects what The Jesse Tree has always been known for — caring for the people of Galveston with consistency, compassion, and community spirit. While the organization’s cornerstone work includes monthly food box and wellness deliveries to seniors and individuals living in Galveston’s public-housing communities, the holiday season naturally adds a little extra warmth to everything they do. What happens here goes far beyond meals. It’s about connection, compassion, and making sure everyone knows they have a place on this island. This Island has always been a place where community comes first. We’ve seen deliveries after hurricanes, neighbors checking on each other during power outages, and potluck traditions that feel like they’ve been around forever. Sharing food and kindness is just part of who we are, and when Christmas arrives, that energy lights up even brighter. For the people receiving the meals, the gestures can be deeply meaningful. Some are far from family, some are trying to recover after a tough year, and others simply need something warm to hold onto, literally and emotionally. Volunteers experiemce the kind of gratitude that lingers long after the last delivery. Those moments remind everyone why showing up matters. And truthfully, the volunteers get just as much out of it. Many have been part of this tradition for years, forming friendships and memories that feel like they came straight out of a feel-good Christmas movie. There’s a shared sense of pride and togetherness, like being part of a big, slightly messy, incredibly loving holiday family.
That’s really the magic of Galveston: no matter what the Island has gone through, storms, rebuilding, ups and downs, the heart of the community never fades. Instead, it grows stronger. What makes it even more special is that the acts of kindness don’t have to be big to matter. A smile, a greeting, a plate of homemade cookies, or a quick visit can change someone’s entire holiday. That’s the beauty of this Island, small gestures have a big impact. Galveston’s holiday history has always been built on connection. From Victorian traditions to modern community drives, neighbors feeding neighbors is a thread that never breaks. And thanks to The Jesse Tree and the wonderful volunteers who pour their time and love into others. Here in Galveston, the spirit of Christmas isn’t just something we talk about. It’s something we live, one meal, one gift, one moment of kindness at a time.
