Walking for Hope
The Out of the Darkness Walk brings the community together to raise awareness for suicide prevention and support those affected by loss. Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the event features a 5K walk through the city, honoring loved ones, sharing stories, and spreading hope.
It’s a day of reflection, community, and the belief that together, suicide can be prevented.

A must-stop spot for hot dog lovers on the island, Local Dogs is serving up bold, crave-worthy flavors made with Nathan’s all-beef hot dogs, with the option to make your dog vegan if you prefer. Located at 1325 Mike Gaido Blvd, this casual eatery is open Monday 11 AM–9 PM, closed Tuesday, and Wednesday through Sunday 11 AM–9 PM. Crowd favorites include the Classic Coney Island, featuring a Nathan’s all-beef dog topped with chili, cheese, mustard, and onions, and the creative Pizza Dog, loaded with marinara, mozzarella, pepperoni, hot honey, and served on a garlic bread bun, making Local Dogs a fun, flavorful stop for every kind of eater.

Galveston’s Legendary
Long before escape rooms, Galveston had a unique attraction that had families laughing, wandering, and occasionally getting a little lost. The human maze at Stewart Beach.
Back in the early 2000s, Stewart Beach wasn’t just about sun, sand, and waves. Amid its miniature golf courses, water slides, and family-friendly concessions, visitors could challenge themselves to navigate a walk-through human maze. Unlike a corn maze or a garden labyrinth, this maze was made for humans with winding paths and playful barriers that invited kids and adults alike to explore, pause, and maybe take a wrong turn or two.
Human Maze Lost in Fun
You could spend half an hour just laughing your way through it and some even cheating by going under the wooden walls. It was simple, but it left memories.
Stewart Beach has been a staple of Galveston recreation for decades. From family vacations to spring break trips, it has offered a mix of entertainment, making it more than just a stretch of sand. The human maze added an interactive element, a chance for families to bond while navigating twists and turns.
Although the original human maze no longer exists, Galveston hasn’t forgotten its playful past. Whether you remember the human maze of Stewart Beach fondly or are discovering Galveston’s quirky past for the first time, it’s clear that the island has always offered more than sun and surf, it’s a place where fun exists on every corner.

Nyia Murphy, a Galveston native, is the owner of Sweetheart Winks, a lash studio built on professionalism, intention, and care. After discovering her passion for lashes while exploring her place in the beauty industry, Nyia set out to create an experience that prioritizes both client confidence and a service. Her work reflects her personality, subtle, neat, and thoughtfully tailored to each client. Check out the interview below to learn a bit more about Nyia!
Q. What inspired you to start Sweetheart Winks, and how did the idea turn into the business you have today?
A. Working for a chain lash company inspired me to start Sweetheart Winks. I didn’t like the way clients and myself were treated like dollar signs.
Q. Can you share a little about your journey into the beauty industry and what led you specifically to lashes?
A. Trying to find my niche, I was an apprentice at a beauty salon but later realized that being a hairstylist wasn’t my passion as I once thought. Wanting to stay in the beauty industry, I decided to try eyelash extensions.
What does a typical day look like for you as the owner of Sweetheart
A typical day at the salon includes arriving 10–15 minutes early to check my schedule, sanitize my station and supplies, provide professional services, and then clean up and prepare for the next workday.
When clients leave your chair, what feeling or experience do you hope they take with them?
When my clients leave the chair, I’m hoping that they have a confidence boost and a professional experience.

Q. What is one lesson you’ve learned since becoming a business owner that has helped you grow personally or professionally?
A. I’ve learned not to be a people pleaser. People pleasing can create chaos in your business and easily spill over into your personal life, especially when clear boundaries with clients aren’t in place.
Q. If you could design a lash set that perfectly represents your personality and brand, what would it look like and why?
A. Subtle and neat, pleasing to the face and eye shape. I’ve learned this year that I am a subtle and neat person overall, from my appearance to my personality.
