Bums on seats: The key to island tourism When you're an island destination, airlift can either make or break your tourism industry. Such has been the case for Vanuatu. There are many reasons to visit the South Pacific, but if it's a holiday you're planning, putting together a wish list is a good start. What do I want from my week or weeks away from home?

Getting this planning right can be the difference between a good holiday and an excellent one.

I was recently in Tonga for work when I bumped into a group of travellers that had literally stumbled onto the little hideaway that I was holed up in. They knew very little about Tonga and were blown away by the experience that they were served up over their 5-day stay. They were at Mounu Island Resort in Vava'u, and they were there to swim with humpback whales.

Now, Mounu isn't your typical island resort, and Vava'u is off the beaten tourist track, to say the least, yet this place offers everything an adventurous traveller could want.

Mounu is small to start with, real small -- only four fales privately nestled amongst the coconut palms on the tiny island in the middle of the archipelago. There's no village, no other resorts; in fact, there's nothing for miles. Central to the accommodation fales is a communal building that houses the bar and restaurant with a large deck in front of a perfect white sand beach. It's off-grid, no power in the fales, only in the communal area, and limited internet again.

The colours of the island and the lagoon that borders it have to be seen to be believed. The edges of the lagoon offer up great coral reef snorkelling and diving, and further out, there is great fishing too. But it is best known for two things - kite surfing and foiling, and the deal breaker for me, the humpback whales.

Whale swimming in the South Pacific started here. Kiwi Alan Bowe, the resort's founder, started whale swimming here back in 1993, and his crazy little idea has blossomed into an entire industry across the South Pacific.

Alan and his wife Lyn passed away in 2017 and 2019, and now the resort is run by their daughter Kirsty who, like her father, has a deep connection with the whales and their conservation.

Getting here is either through Nadi, Fiji, with Fiji Airways a couple of times a week direct to Neiafu, or from Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa on Lulutai Airways, who fly to Vava'u a couple of times a day. From Neiafu, Vava'u's capital, Kirsty's team will pick you up by boat to whisk you out to paradise about 40 minutes away. Even the trip out is like something out of a movie. Towering cliffs, deep blue water, spectacular caves and sea birds and fish leaping and diving in every direction.

Once you're settled in, Kirsty or her whale guide will brief you on what lies ahead. The trips out to see the whales happen daily and usually first thing in the morning. Their two catamaran boats are perfect for whale watching from the top deck or jumping in and out to swim with them from the lower passenger areas.

And there are lots of whales here in season, and they are often found playing right in front of the island. They come here from Antarctica to calve and mate, and they don't feed for the 3 months they are here.

The females can be found with their babies chilling around the myriad of bays and reefs, the 2-3 ton calves often coming over to swimmers to make the experience even more special.

The males are constantly cruising up and down through the reefs and around the dozens of uninhabited islets on the hunt for the ladies, their singing often giving away their location as they submerge for up to 20 minutes at a time. At night you can hear them singing over the sound of waves on your private beach as you drift off to sleep.

All sounding pretty amazing? Well, here's the kicker. Even with the difficulties of limited supplies and town 40 minutes away, the food on Mounu is as good as the Pacific's most expensive restaurants. Every meal I've had here has been exceptional, and I've had a few over the years.

Now you can swim with humpback whales in Niue, Rarotonga, and Tahiti, but for me, the fact that it all started here at this tiny little island paradise is what makes the experience of Mounu just that much more incredible.

Suncoast Sanctuary Volivoli Beach Resort

As a destination, Fiji continues to go from strength to strength, with year-on-year growth bringing more and more visitors to these beautiful islands.

But while tourist hubs like Denarau Island are a constant hive of activity, Fiji still has a treasure trove of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.

Over the last 14 years, the Islandtime team has been lucky enough to explore some of these less-frequented spots. However, we've never had the chance to 'turn left' out of Nadi International Airport and head up Viti Levu's north coast. This time we did; our destination, Volivoli Beach Resort, located at the very tip of the island.

A family affair From the very outset, Volivoli Beach Resort has been a family affair. Or more to the point, the creation of the Darling Family. Originally from New Zealand, Steve Darling Snr came to this part of Fiji in 1993 to work on the final section of the Kings Road between Rakiraki and Suva.

Needless to say, Steve Snr, wife Gail, and sons Nick and Steve Jnr fell in love with the place, the pace of life, and the people. With the pristine Bligh Waters straight offshore, diving soon became a passion. It eventually turned into a business, with the family purchasing Ra Divers, Fiji's oldest commercial dive operation, which was then based at Wananavu Beach Resort in Rakiraki.

When 27 acres on the Volivoli headland became available for lease in the early 2000s, the Darling Family took the plunge, so to speak, building backpacker accommodation and moving Ra Divers to the site that is now Volivoli Beach Resort.

Over the years, Volivoli has evolved into a superbly appointed, four-star boutique resort, while staying true to its roots as a gateway to some of Fiji's finest diving. The Darling Family still owns and runs the resort, with Steve Jnr on-site daily.

The family history and the connection to the local community are what make Volivoli very special. Volivoli employs over 100 staff from nearby villages, many of whom have been with the resort since it was first built.

These dedicated employees are very much family too, taking great pride in 'their' resort - offering guests an authentic island experience that feels like you're being welcomed into their own home – which in many ways you are.

Ra Divers. Fiji’s premier dive operation Diving is part of Volivoli's fabric. Sitting directly off the coast, the Bligh Waters are a diver's paradise that attracts underwater adventurers from around the world. Named after Captain Bligh (of HMS Bounty fame), this pristine marine environment is home to nutrient-rich waters that provide a place for sea life to flourish.

Visiting divers come face-to-face with a kaleidoscope of vibrant soft and hard corals, majestic manta rays, and swim alongside a vast array of colourful reef fish. Often called the "soft coral capital of the world," the Bligh Waters provide an unforgettable experience for both novice and expert divers alike.

Of course, accessing these amazing dive sites requires expert knowledge, first-class equipment, and an intimate understanding of local marine conditions. Which is where Volivoli's Ra Divers operation comes in. Ra Divers is considered Fiji's premier dive operator, and they've been guiding divers in this region for over 30 years.

The sheer variety of dives is incredible, with more than 90 diving locations spread across 9 distinct zones. Each morning, conditions are assessed and forecasts checked. Then, depending on which site you're visiting, the boat ride might take anywhere from 12 to 50 minutes, although a majority of sites are within 20 minutes. With so many dives to choose from, divers often return to Volivoli time and time again, exploring new sites each time they visit.

On land, the dive operation is equally impressive. The compressor room boasts state-of-the-art Coltri HP compressors, NITROX membrane plants, and O2 Booster Pump and CCR cylinders. For non-divers, this won't mean a lot, but essentially Ra Divers can fill tanks of every possible variety, for every possible purpose.

Ra Divers even have a purpose-built camera room, with 14 workstations fitted with 56 international charging points, 28 USB chargers, and 14 airguns – ensuring each underwater experience is captured for a lifetime of memories. On top of that, Ra Divers have a fleet of 6 purpose-built dive boats ranging from 26-50ft – which means different dive groups and levels of divers can be catered for on the same day.

Finally, there are the twenty or so Fijian dive crew. Led by Dive Master Josh Papu, the dive crew bring a magical mix of Fijian hospitality and expert-level dive knowledge. Ra Divers have Fiji’s only Diamond Instructor Training Centre. Many of the crew are born and raised in the local area and have come through Ra Divers' internship programme, which provides an opportunity for youth from local villages to learn valuable skills and forge a career that helps support their families.

Reel adventure: Fishing the Bligh Waters I'm a casual fisherman at best. The kind that only goes out when his friends-with-boats invite him. Even though it only happens every now and again, I do thoroughly enjoy a day out on the water and the anticipation of getting a decent catch. And with a half-day charter booked, we couldn't wait to see what Volivoli's first-class fishing outfit could put us onto.

Taking off early morning, the sun was out and the water was sheet glass.

We hopped on board 'Half Cast', Volivoli Beach Resort's custom-built 35-foot centre console fishing vessel and headed out to a 2km wide 'ring' of reef that sits about 20 minutes off the coast.

The idea was to troll the inside of the reef and see what awaited! Pola, our captain and fishing guide from the local village, had set up the Shimano

rods and reels. And he had his eyes peeled for signs of fish. He'd been fishing these waters since he was a kid and shared stories of massive yellowfin tuna, giant trevally, wahoo and Spanish mackerel that call these waters home.

It wasn't too long before the two reels were screaming and we hauled in our tuna with some effort. Not quite the fish we were targeting, but smaller skipjack tuna. The next few hours proved to be quiet – but even if the fishing gods didn't smile on us, being out on this beautiful blue ocean, sharing stories and soaking up the warm winter sun was still a lot of fun.

As far as activities go, diving is the focus for Volivoli, but sportfishing is something the team is aiming to build on in the coming years. "We have a first-class fishing setup at Volivoli, with a quality boat and gear, extremely knowledgeable guides and a huge range of fishing spots on offer. We're putting more focus on the New Zealand and Australian market and believe we can get some real traction with anglers wanting an authentic action-packed fishing trip," says Simon Doughty, Volivoli's Dive Sales Manager.

Daulomani Spa: Pampering in paradise Sitting just above the water's edge on the 'sunset' side of Volivoli Beach Resort, Daulomani Day Spa offers a tranquil retreat for guests seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. The stunning sea views will put you at ease, before the treatment even begins! And the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore will provide a soothing soundtrack.

The spa's menu features a truly enticing array of treatments. Exploring the Suncoast The Volivoli experience isn't all fishing and diving. In fact, it's quite the opposite. There's plenty to see and do in this vibrant corner of Fiji - from local markets to historical sites and guided tours, the area offers a rich tapestry of experiences for every kind of traveller.

Rakiraki Market: A feast for the senses One of the local must-sees is the Rakiraki Market, a 15-minute drive from Volivoli Beach Resort. Sitting right in the centre of Rakiraki town, the market is a lively community hub packed with local flavour. Wander through the colourful stalls and you'll see fresh produce, impressive in size and quality. There are plenty of handicrafts for sale too if you want to pick up a knick-knack or two. The fresh-cut pineapples are sweet and refreshing, i.e. perfect on a hot day. And grab a bag of limes too – and squeeze them into your duty-free rum and coke, or vodka and soda!

Udre Udre: The Great Cannibal One of the most prominent figures in Rakiraki history is the legendary cannibal Chief Udre Udre. Udre Udre gained fame (or infamy) for reportedly consuming between 872 and 999 people in his lifetime.

The story goes that he carefully recorded his victims by placing stones alongside his tomb - a practice that led to his recognition by Guinness World Records as the 'most prolific cannibal' in history. Although the exact circumstances of his death around 1840 remain unclear, Udre Udre's story reflects the cultural practices of the time. You'll find the grave near the Kings Road / Rakiraki turnoff.

Soni's Tours: Your Local Guide The Rakiraki area is rich in history and natural attractions. And the best way to discover them is with local guidance. Which is where Soni comes in. Soni is a Na Qase (village elder) from Rakiraki and after working at Volivoli for over 15 years, he started up his own tour business – sharing the traditions, history and natural beauty with resort guests. Soni has put together a collection of tours that show off the area's best features. These include beautiful landscapes, lush forests, cascading waterfalls, vibrant markets, inland villages and other historical landmarks. He also offers food tours from the resort, which let guests try the many local foods and learn about Rakiraki's food culture. Bookings can be made at reception.

Getting there Volivoli Beach Resort is a 2.5-hour drive up the northwest coast of Viti Levu. On the way, you'll pass through the major commercial centre of Lautoka, and drive past Ba, the other big town up this way.

The further north you get, the quieter it becomes. Steady traffic gives way to peace and quiet. Every so often you'll pass through a tiny village with a small collection of houses, and sometimes a school, church and rugby field. The scenery is also spectacular.

As the road winds past Tavua Bay, you'll enjoy panoramic ocean views on one side and rugged mountain ranges on the other, with barely a human to be seen. Most visitors to Volivoli Beach Resort add airport transfers to their accommodation package. It means visitors can sit back, relax and enjoy a few refreshing beverages on the way.

Malolo Island Resort: New app. New tech Following the success of its sister property, Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Malolo Island Resort has launched its own app, making it easier for guests to plan their visit before arriving. The app allows guests to explore activities, build their itineraries, and check in online for a smooth arrival. Once at the resort, the app serves as a personal concierge, displaying daily events, allowing reservations for dining and spa treatments, and providing access to individual itineraries all from the comfort of a beach or pool lounge.

The resort has also invested FJD$1M in a technology upgrade, installing free WiFi in all guest bures and improving existing hotspots in public areas. This update supports the app and boosts overall connectivity for guests.

Likuliku Lagoon Resort schedules major 2025 revitalisation Likuliku Lagoon Resort (part of 100% Fijian family-owned Ahura Resorts), will close from 1 February to 30 April 2025 for an extensive revitalisation project. This significant upgrade project estimated at FJD$10M, will elevate the resort’s luxury offerings and improve the overall guest experience. The long list of planned improvements include a complete refurbishment of all bures, with 11 Beachfront Bures set to receive private plunge pools, expanding the Deluxe Beachfront Bure category from 18 to 29 bures. The resort will complete its synthetic roof thatching project, using environmentally-friendly materials on the remaining Beachfront and Deluxe Beachfront bures.

The main pool will also be refurbished, and a new dining concept, Saluwaki, will be introduced. This Pan-Asian style restaurant will focus on local ingredients sourced from the resort’s gardens, surrounding waters, and across Fiji, bringing the total number of dining outlets to three. Another key addition is the Na Vanua Conservation Hub, which highlights Fijian culture, land, and conservation efforts, offering guests unique opportunities to engage with local traditions and ongoing environmental projects.

The island has a range of volunteer programmes for those visitors keen to contribute to the island's natural environment. Every Monday, from 9am to 12.30pm, the Friends of the National Park gather to combat invasive weeds. Volunteers receive tools, gloves, work shirts, and morning tea.

On Wednesdays, the Norfolk Island Conservation Volunteers work with local councils to remove invasive species from the Hundred Acre Reserve. For bird enthusiasts, Thursday evenings from 5pm to 7pm are dedicated to tagging bird-call recordings, contributing to important research. Fridays focus on native plant propagation at the Flora Force nursery, where volunteers help nurture Norfolk Island's unique flora. No prior experience is required for any of the activities, and all equipment is provided, making it a great way to engage with the island community and protect its natural beauty. Air Chathams announces seasonal flights Air Chathams has confirmed its seasonal service to Norfolk Island, with flights operating from 29 August 2024 to 24 April 2025. The weekly flights will connect Auckland (AKL) to Norfolk Island (NLK) every Thursday. The outbound flight departs Auckland at 12:30 pm, arriving in Norfolk Island at 1:15 pm local time. Hawaiian Airlines resumes NZ flights and joins with Alaska Airlines Great news for Hawaii fans. Hawaiian Airlines will resume its Auckland to Honolulu service, operating three times a week from 16 November 2024 to 30 April 2025. This route connects Kiwi travellers to 16 U.S. mainland destinations, including Las Vegas (perfect timing for major events such as the Formula 1 in November and the NRL in March) 2025. The airline also offers flights to Long Beach, a convenient gateway for Disneyland visitors. And in major news, Hawaiian Airlines has joined forces with Alaska Airlines.

This historic partnership brings together two airlines with over 90 years of experience in connecting communities. The first home, opening in November 2024, is ideal for couples or small families, featuring a master bedroom with a full bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. A popular spot with Muri visitors, Muri Beach Club Hotel will celebrate its 19th anniversary this December. The New Year will bring some exciting upgrades to its pool area. Renovations will begin on 18 January 2025, with the hotel fully closing until 7 February due to the use of heavy machinery. From 8 February to 14 March, while the hotel remains open, the pool will be unavailable. During this period, all other facilities, including the restaurant, spa, and lounge, will continue to operate. To thank guests for their understanding, the hotel is offering a special "Lagoon Deal" with a 40% discount on rooms. Guests with existing bookings will be contacted to discuss options, including cancellations or credits.
