Palm Grove – Find Your Raro Rhythm There’s a lot to be said for keeping things simple on a Rarotonga holiday. A beautiful beach. Somewhere comfortable to stay. The freedom to prepare your own meals when you feel like it, a good restaurant when you don’t, and enough within easy reach that each day can unfold at its own pace. Palm Grove has been offering exactly that for almost 50 years.

Set in Vaimaanga on Rarotonga’s southern coast, it’s a small, friendly property that has built a loyal following over the decades. There are just 22 free-standing bungalows spread across five acres of beachfront and tropical gardens, with plenty of space to settle in. And one of Palm Grove’s greatest attractions is right out front.

Having your own kitchen is a big bonus. Wigmore’s Superstore is only 300 metres away, making it easy to pick up fresh fruit, drinks, snacks or ingredients for dinner. There’s also a covered guest BBQ area.

Palm Grove sits opposite a picture-postcard stretch of Rarotonga’s southern coastline. The lagoon here is wide, clear and deep enough to be enjoyed at all tides, making it perfect for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. Complimentary snorkelling gear and kayaks are available, so exploring can be as simple as crossing the road and heading into the water.

Beach chairs and towels are provided too, for those days when doing very little is exactly the plan. The beach stretches for kilometres in either direction, ideal for an early morning walk or sunset stroll.

Back across the road, Palm Grove’s garden bungalows sit among tropical flowers and greenery, with Rarotonga’s mountainous interior rising behind them. It’s a beautiful part of the island and a notch quieter than the areas further north.

A Place That Feels Like Home Every bungalow is free-standing and self-contained, with its own kitchen.

All kitchens and bathrooms have recently been refurbished, giving the bungalows a fresh update while keeping the chilled-out character that has long been part of Palm Grove.

There are other practical touches too, including guest laundry facilities, onsite motorbike rentals, free parking and UV-filtered drinking water available from the taps throughout the property.

Palm Grove also has a freshwater swimming pool with an attached children’s pool, giving you another place to cool off when you’re not in the lagoon.

Every Meal Taken Care Of Having your own kitchen doesn’t mean you need to use it every day. The Yellow Hibiscus, Palm Grove’s open-air restaurant and bar, overlooks the tropical gardens and is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A tropical breakfast buffet is included each morning, with cooked options also available. Later in the day, the menu has a Pacific-rim influence, with an emphasis on fresh local ingredients.

The restaurant also brings a relaxed social side to staying at Palm Grove.

Chances are you’ll make friends during your stay.

Live music features during the week, while Friday Happy Hour is a favourite with house guests, who enjoy complimentary drinks from 4.30pm to 6pm. On Sundays, the popular BBQ serves a choice of ribeye or broadbill alongside a buffet of fresh salads.

It’s a nice balance. Guests can enjoy the atmosphere when they feel like it, while still having the privacy of their own bungalow to return to.

The Island Within Easy Reach Palm Grove’s location also makes a good base for exploring. The local bus stops directly outside every half hour, several cafés and restaurants are within walking distance and Avarua is around 20 minutes away. The airport is around 15 minutes by road.

Reception can help organise tours and activities, while onsite motorbike rentals make it easy to explore independently.

The Heart And Soul Of Raro Over the years, Palm Grove has naturally evolved. Under the longtime ownership of Betsy Eisler, new bungalows have been added, the restaurant expanded and the property refurbished, including the recent upgrade of all bungalow kitchens and bathrooms.

Yet through those changes, Palm Grove has held onto the small, personal and relaxed feel that guests have long loved.

That balance has helped make it one of Rarotonga’s most popular mid-range accommodation choices. Almost 50 years after Palm Grove first began welcoming guests, the formula remains refreshingly simple: comfortable bungalows, plenty of space, friendly hospitality and one of Rarotonga’s best beaches and lagoons right out front.

Finding Home in Rarotonga As owner of Palm Grove Resort in Rarotonga for 25 years, Betsy Eisler knows a thing or two about island life and what keeps guests coming back. We caught up with Betsy about her journey to Rarotonga, life at Palm Grove and some of the lessons she’s learnt along the way.

You’ve been part of Palm Grove for a long time.

What started your journey?

After welcoming thousands of guests, is there one guest, moment or experience that stands out?

I first visited Rarotonga in May 2001, joining a good friend for part of her longer trip abroad. We stayed at a backpackers, met lots of locals, and pretty soon I was changing my plane ticket so I could stay longer in paradise. I returned to Rarotonga two months later and relocated to the island permanently five months after that.

I could never narrow it down! Between proposals, weddings, reunions, special anniversaries, girls’ trips and annual holidays, we’ve had so many special moments over the years. Just this week, a lovely lady from Germany reached out after staying here 19 years ago. She’s still dreaming of Rarotonga. I remember her well and was even able to send her some photos I had from her visit, which totally made her day, and mine.

How long have you owned the resort, and what was it like when you first took over?

I’ve owned Palm Grove for 25 years now. A lot has changed during that time, yet so much has remained the same! Over the years, we’ve added more bungalows, expanded the restaurant, undertaken three property refurbishments and weathered cyclones, upturns, downturns and even Covid, coming out still standing on the other side. But the location, fabulous beach, genuine smiles from the staff and overall friendliness of the property are just as they’ve always been.

What’s something about you that regular Palm Grove guests might be surprised to learn?

I can’t remember the last time I went for a swim in the lagoon!

Why do you think Kiwis and Aussies keep coming back to Rarotonga, and Palm Grove itself?

Rarotonga is such a special place in the world. It captured my heart 25 years ago! There’s no doubt the beauty of the island is a huge draw, as is the warmth and friendliness of the locals. But I also think it’s that feeling of stepping back in time a bit, to a simpler and easier way of life where you’re more connected to nature and can really slow down and enjoy yourself.

What’s your biggest lesson from running a resort?

You cannot be all things to all people. Focus on what you do best and continue to provide consistently good experiences.

Peppers Seminyak offers two wedding packages. Just the Two of Us is designed for couples wanting to keep the ceremony between themselves.

Exclusive use of the Rooftop Garden is included, along with a flower arch, bridal bouquet, groom’s boutonniere, altar, aisle decorations, wedding sign and flower shower.

There’s an English-speaking celebrant, music and a commemorative certificate, followed by a two hour Chocolate Fondue spa experience for the newlyweds. Sparkling wine waiting in the villa and a night in a One Bedroom Pool Villa are included too.

For couples who want family and friends beside them, Intimate Elegance caters for up to 50 guests. The garden setting and ceremony details remain the same, with seating added for everyone. It’s a size that suits the setting nicely. And it’s perfect for bringing your favourite people together, while keeping the celebration relaxed, intimate and personal.

Dinner Is Served Once the ceremony is over, attention will naturally turn to dinner. The Laneway Restaurant sits directly below the Rooftop Garden, and wedding menus range from canapés and set menus to delicious Indonesian and international buffets.

There are plenty of familiar choices, but a wedding in Bali is also an opportunity to bring some local flavour to the table. Indonesian menus include Balinese bebek betutu, seafood woku belanga and beef rendang, with dadar gulung among the desserts. If you’d prefer Western options, the menus include pan-seared scallops, salmon, Moroccan rack of lamb and grilled Black Angus tenderloin, while canapés range from tuna tartare and crab profiteroles to chicken yakitori.

Couples can also choose from a host of extra touches, such as acoustic music, a DJ, violin or cello performances, Balinese dancers and Balinese flower girls. The in-house events team can also assist with photography and video.

Stay A Little Longer The villas add another dimension to the days around the wedding.

Accommodation ranges from One Bedroom Pool Villas through to Five Bedroom Presidential Pool Villas, allowing couples to have their own space while larger families and groups of friends stay together.

All have private pools, teakwood terraces and spacious indoor and outdoor living areas. The day before the wedding might be spent catching up around the pool, while the morning after can unfold over a late breakfast, another swim and stories from the night before. There’s also The Spa at Peppers Seminyak, offering massages, facials and other treatments for some welcome downtime before or after the celebrations.

The Practical Side Bali’s dry season runs from April to October and the wet season from November to March, so Peppers requires couples to have a wet-weather backup plan. There is also a distinctly Balinese option.

Couples can arrange a traditional rain stopper service, where a Hindu priest performs a ritual using offerings and incense to try to divert the rain elsewhere or hold it back for a few hours. There are no guarantees, of course, but it’s an interesting local tradition to become part of the occasion.

There are a few other practicalities. Events for more than 20 people involving larger set-ups, live music, DJs or performances may require a contribution to the local banjar, or village community.

Fiji Takes to the Road in New Zealand Tourism Fiji has wrapped up its latest New Zealand trade showcase, bringing a strong contingent of 31 Fijian tourism operators and suppliers to Christchurch and Auckland.

The 2026 showcase kicked off at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre on 19 August, before heading north to Pullman Auckland on 21 August, giving New Zealand travel sellers the opportunity to meet directly with Fiji's tourism industry and hear the latest destination and product updates.

The sizeable Fiji delegation reflects the importance of the New Zealand market and gave agents the chance to catch up on what's new across the destination, from resorts and accommodation to experiences and other tourism products.

The roadshow comes as Fiji continues to perform strongly as a visitor destination. Fiji recorded a record 986,367 international visitor arrivals in 2025, and the Fiji Bureau of Statistics released its latest July 2026 visitor figures on 17 August.

For Kiwi agents, the showcase was a chance to refresh their Fiji knowledge, reconnect face-to-face with operators and discover even more reasons to keep Fiji front of mind for their clients.

It's a Bumper Humpback Whale Season in Niue The whale bell is sounding regularly at Niue Island Scenic Matavai Resort, as the annual whale season sees 'sold out' months of August and September.

Niue Tourism's Sarah Porter was in Niue recently for a personal trip and had an incredible afternoon swimming with migrating humpback whales. Porter says, "It had been over a decade since I had experienced a whale swim, so I needed my Niue fix, and I certainly got it. Unbelievable encounters with three different pairs of humpback whales. In our gin-clear water, it was just awesome to watch these amazing creatures interact with each other... and give us a curious glance now and then too!"

Niue Island has tight restrictions around whale swim encounters, with the wellbeing of the mammals at the forefront. Only six guests are allowed in the water with the guide, and there are only two operators in Niue licensed to run whale swims. For this reason, Porter reminds travel professionals to prebook their clients' whale swims well ahead of time, as spots fill up months in advance. "Start looking at 2027 now," Porter suggests.

However, as Niue is a raised coral atoll and the coral reef runs around the island, the whales hug the coastline, meaning you can easily watch them breach, fluke and tail slap from the shore. "There are great binoculars all around the island at key whale-watching sites, but most of the time you don't even need to use them as the whales are so close to land," Porter adds.

The experienced guides from both Explore Niue and Niue Blue, who operate the whale encounters, also dedicate a lot of time to research and diligently photograph whale tails to upload to Happywhale, an international database that tracks whales all over the globe. Visitors to Niue can also contribute in this way, as well as through local not-for-profit initiatives such as Niue Ocean Wide and Oma Tafua.

Easier Access to Maupiti Travelling to Maupiti has become simpler thanks to a new partnership between Air Tahiti and ferry operator Apetahi Express. The new arrangement allows travellers to book a single ticket combining an Air Tahiti flight from Tahiti to Bora Bora with an onward ferry crossing to Maupiti. It also increases weekly services to the island from five to eight, adding three extra return connections each week. The combined air and sea ticket can be booked through Air Tahiti agencies or the airline's remote sales service, making island hopping easier than ever.

Build Begins at Toahotu Resort at Pointe Poriro There’s a new place to stay taking shape in Tahiti, with construction now underway on Toahotu Resort at Pointe Poriro.

Pointe Poriro is around 60km south of Papeete on Tahiti’s lessvisited southern coast, an area known for its dramatic scenery, black-sand beaches, rugged headlands and surf breaks.

Expected to welcome its first guests in late 2028, the new threestar resort will feature 31 rooms, including a mix of beachfront and garden bungalows. Guests will also have access to a restaurant, swimming pool and wellness area. Behind the development are the owners of Cook’s Bay Hotel in Moorea, bringing their existing experience in French Polynesia’s tourism industry to the new property. Inspired by the legendary Bloody Mary’s Restaurant, the new boutique hotel will bring the spirit of the original into a 53-room stay that mixes playful tiki influences with a more contemporary style. The idea is to create somewhere that feels relaxed and social, with a strong connection to Bora Bora and the people and culture that make the island so special. Rather than simply borrowing a well-known name, Bloody Mary’s Hotel aims to carry forward the character that made the original restaurant such a memorable part of a Bora Bora holiday. For travellers who remember a night at Bloody Mary’s from visits gone by, the October opening will bring a familiar name back to the island in a very different way.

Air Tahiti Extends Remote Services Air Tahiti will continue providing vital air links to some of French Polynesia's most remote islands after renewing its public service agreement with the French Polynesian Government. The contract to be extended in the near future, guarantees regular services to 34 islands across the Tuamotu, Austral, Gambier and Marquesas archipelagos. These routes provide an essential lifeline for communities that would otherwise have limited or no scheduled air services, while also opening up some of French Polynesia's most remote destinations for adventurous travellers.

Faarumai Falls Welcomes Back Visitors One of Tahiti’s favourite natural attractions is back in full flow, with visitors once again able to explore all three Faarumai Waterfalls. Located in Tiarei, around a 30-minute drive east of Papeete, the site had been partially closed while maintenance work was carried out. The first waterfall, Vaimahuta, is just a few minutes’ walk from the entrance. If you’re up for a little more exploring, another 20 to 30 minutes on foot takes you to Haamaremare Rahi, the highest of the three at 100 metres, and Haamaremare Iti, at 40 metres. Sitting amongst lush vegetation and dramatic basalt cliffs, the valley feels a world away from Tahiti’s famous beaches and lagoons. New Caledonia by Bike or Hike New Caledonia is encouraging travellers to swap some beach time for two wheels or a pair of hiking boots. The destination is emerging as a mountain biking hotspot, with Australian Mountain Bike Magazine helping showcase trail riding through the red-earth landscapes, rainforest and mountainous interior of Grande Terre. Still in the great outdoors, hikers can take things a little slower on the GR NC1, a marked 107km long-distance trail stretching from Prony in the Far South to Dumbéa, near Nouméa. Usually tackled over seven days, the route takes walkers through coastal landscapes, rainforest and New Caledonia’s distinctive red-earth country. Together, the two experiences are opening up another side of New Caledonia, giving active travellers plenty of reasons to head inland and discover what lies beyond the coast.

The Beach House Opens Fresh A familiar Noumea dining spot has a fresh new look, with the former La Fiesta reopening as The Beach House following a major renovation by The Mougel Group. The newly updated restaurant puts local produce at the heart of its menu, drawing on fresh, seasonal ingredients from around the region. Expect plenty of New Caledonian flavour, with a mix of Melanesian, Creole and French influences infused across the menu. Lagoon fish, market-fresh vegetables and other regional specialities all feature, giving diners a taste of the destination as well as a new place to enjoy it.

Fiji Airways Sets September Return Fiji Airways is returning to New Caledonia, with direct flights between Nadi and Nouméa set to resume from 22 September 2026. The service will operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, reconnecting New Caledonia with one of the Pacific’s key aviation hubs.

Flights will be operated by Fiji Link, Fiji Airways’ regional subsidiary, using ATR 72-600 aircraft. The return is good news for travellers across the region, restoring a direct link between Fiji and New Caledonia while also opening up more options for those travelling further afield.

Through Nadi, passengers will be able to connect with Fiji Airways’ wider international network, making New Caledonia more accessible from a range of markets.

Pro Golf Gets Back on Map The Evian New Caledonia Open made a welcome return in late April, putting New Caledonia back on the Pacific’s professional golf circuit.

Held at Garden Golf de Dumbéa, near Nouméa, the tournament brought together 30 professional golfers from across Oceania.

Another 100 amateurs had the chance to get amongst the action, teaming up with touring professionals for a friendly but highly competitive Pro-Am played in an ambrose format. The return of the Open marked the beginning of a three-year plan to rebuild the tournament and establish it as a major annual fixture on New Caledonia’s events calendar.

Away from the fairways, a partner village and opening and closing ceremonies added to the atmosphere, making the event about more than just the golf.

Pure Fiji Arrives at Aqua Royal Spa A little touch of Fiji has arrived in New Caledonia, with Aqua Royal Spa at Château Royal Beach Resort & Spa, now the exclusive home of Pure Fiji and a new collection of treatments featuring the Pacific skincare range. One of them is a 40-minute Coconut Body Scrub, using Pure Fiji coconut flakes to gently exfoliate and hydrate the skin. Series by Marriott Arrives in New Caledonia Marriott International has introduced its Series by Marriott brand to the South Pacific, with three New Caledonian resorts joining the portfolio.

Le Domaine Nouméa, Le Domaine Déva and Le Domaine Oro are the first Series by Marriott properties in the Pacific, bringing a combined 431 rooms and suites across three very different New Caledonian settings.

In Bourail, Le Domaine Déva sits within the Déva Domain nature reserve beside a UNESCO World Heritage-listed barrier reef. The 176-room resort combines beach and nature, with an infinity pool, Deep Nature Spa, access to Golf de Déva and 158km of marked trails through the surrounding reserve.

Baunti Tours Hosts Carnival Visitors Early August saw one of the busiest days of the year, when cruise ship Carnival Encounter arrived for a day of island exploring. More than 2,200 passengers and crew came ashore, giving the island a great buzz and providing a welcome boost for local tourism operators. It was a particularly busy day for Baunti Tours, which hosted around 1,170 passengers on tours.

With just a day to discover Norfolk, visitors headed out to experience some of the island’s history, beautiful scenery and local attractions. Norfolk Island was the first port of call on Carnival Encounter’s itinerary, and by the time the ship sailed again that evening, plenty of passengers had enjoyed their first taste of the island.

Spring Comes Alive Spring is a beautiful time to get out and explore Norfolk Island, as the landscape turns lush and green and wildflowers begin adding splashes of colour across the island. Deeley Brothers Take Over Breakas There’s a new chapter beginning at Breakas Beach Resort in Vanuatu, with brothers Andrew, Mark and Brendon Deeley taking ownership of the popular Port Vila resort on 31 August. The brothers say their plan is to respect what guests and locals already love about Breakas, while bringing “our own energy, ideas and a significant financial investment to the property”.

They’ll also be working closely with the existing resort team, local suppliers and tourism partners, with a strong commitment to supporting local employment and businesses. The aim is to build on Breakas’ existing reputation while creating plenty of new reasons for guests to keep coming back. “This is a very special property in a truly beautiful part of the world, and we see enormous potential for its future,” the brothers said.

Exactly what that future looks like is still under wraps, but it sounds like some exciting changes are on the way. Further announcements around Breakas’ future direction, branding, investment and development plans are expected over the coming months. Watch this space!

Horses Have a Home for Life at Ratua We love this story behind one of Ratua Private Island Resort’s signature experiences. The new StikmNek Tourist Pass brings together deals from independent businesses across Efate, Tanna and Espiritu Santo, covering everything from dining and accommodation to tours, wellness, shopping and transport.

Rather than booking through a third party, travellers browse offers on StikmNek, then contact operators directly by WhatsApp, email or phone. Payment is made directly to the business, with StikmNek taking no commission.
