Tahiti Taking a road less travelled

We all know the classic travel images of Tahiti. Of striking world-class resorts stretching out across impossibly blue waters. Without a doubt these fine accommodations provide an experience that everyone should have on their bucket list. However, there is another side to Tahiti that more travellers should experience. It’s small, personal and infinitely rewarding.

Ia Ora - in the heart of traditions Ia Ora is a brand developed by Tourism Tahiti and The Small Family Hotels Association to promote traditional guesthouse and family hotel style accommodation in Tahiti and its islands.

French Polynesia certainly has its share of impressive hotels but the launch of Ia Ora heralds the addition of a whole new accommodation category for visitors that want to stay in more remote places, experience authentic cultural delights of the archipelago or get to know their hosts and how they live. The Ia Ora brand will also act as a rating system similar to New Zealands Qualmark and will develop over time into a tool that will lift the standard for this style of accommodation.

The brands standards are based on four main criteria: 1/ Environment, ambience and appearance 2/ Quality of service 3/ Hygiene 4/ Catering options There’s a great little publication called ‘Ia Ora – au coeur des traditions’ and a website www.ia-ora.com. Your preferred wholesaler will have more information on the individual properties they promote.

Teahupoo Tahiti Surfari On the southwestern shores of Tahiti, at the roads end, you’ll find Teahupoo. Famous as one of the world’s top surfing spots Teahupoo has developed its reputation because of its powerful, steep faced waves and consistency. It is on the bucket list of keen surfers from around the globe and has featured in many famous movies and documentaries. On the day we visited the swell was from the south and was about 1.5 meters in height with an light offshore breeze“perfect” according to the visiting Australians on the dock as we left – but nothing like the terrifying seven meter swells that blessed the championships a couple of years ago.

Capitalising on the interest shown by visiting surfers and tourists, Teahupoo Tahiti Surfari now offers sightseeing and photography tours to the break, combined with a scenic boat trip and eco tour of the reefs and rainforests further along the otherwise inaccessible coast. Like most surfing spots in the islands, Teahupoo’s surf break is formed as the ocean swells meet the reef, where the channel cuts though it. The reef forces the ocean swells to rise and then break as the swell crosses the shallow expanse. Cindy, our skipper, a 20 something Tahitian, stopped the boat in the passage about 100 metres from the break, in line with the outside edge of the reef. Half a dozen surfers and one boogie boarder were ripping it up as we bobbed around in the channel, watching. As you would expect, they were all pretty good and we joined in the fun, flashing the ‘thumbs up’ or ‘hang loose’ signs as appreciation for the great show. It was certainly entertaining and very exciting.

Leaving the surfbreak we motored along the coast taking in the vista of jagged mountains, virgin rainforest and coconut-framed beaches until we came to a gap in the coral reef. After a short safety briefing we dived into the ocean and swam ashore where we clambered onto the reef and made our way to a waterfall, on the edge of the jungle. Refreshed after our dip in the pool at the base of the waterfall we made our way about a kilometre along the reef in ankle deep water, frightening reef fish and an octopus as we went. Standing on the rocks, we needed to judge the surging swell before diving back into the water and swimming the 50 meters though the surf to the boat – not for the faint hearted!

We came ashore further along the remote coast and hiked for a hour through the jungle on what could, at best, be called an unformed track before wading up a small stream into a cave. Once through the cave we discovered a perfect grotto complete with 50 metre waterfall cascading into a pool surrounded by jungle. The walls of the grotto were covered in maidenhair ferns, mosses and saplings of the jungle plants encouraged to grow by the extra light the break in the canopy offered. The water was cool and fresh and sweet to the taste. This was raw nature.

On the way back to the boat, we sloshed our way through the mud and scrambled over fallen trees, Cindy informed me that they will not be improving the track and instead will leave it as Mother Nature intended. “This is not Disneyland Scott. This is the REAL Tahiti, in all her glory.

This is what our guests say they want to see.” I couldn’t agree more.

On the way back to Teahupoo we stopped at a native fare on the edge of the jungle for a lunch of raw fish and baked local vegetables, cooked on an open fire under a corrugated iron roof.

Washed down with a cold Hinano (the local beer), it was the perfect end to an excellent day. As we said our goodbyes on the dock my fellow travellers exalted that the Teahupoo Tahiti Surfari was the best day they had spent in their two weeks in French Polynesia.

Swimming with Sharks in Moorea “Do the sharks ever attack?” asked the apprehensive Japanese tourist as we approached the reef.

“No, not usually, but maybe today,” answered Amo, our guide, with a big smile.

Nervous laughter rippled through the passengers.

We were at the Intercontinental Moorea on their famous shark and ray excursion. “Just kidding,” said Amo. “We have more trouble with sunburn. Don’t forget your lotion,” he added as he jumped into the water and waited for his charges to disembark down the ladder. Behind him, four sharks and two rays glided past, seemingly oblivious to our presence. Trevally and small reef fish darted between our legs.

Once we were all standing in the waist deep water he turned and slapped the surface.

Immediately the rays rushed up to feed on the small fish he had in his hand. There were squeals of delight as the rays brushed against the swimmers rubbing their smooth slimy skin along exposed limbs. Soon we were surrounded by rays, about 20 in all, as a dozen reef sharks swam slowly past just out of reach.

Within minutes the nervous swimmers had relaxed and were calling to Amo to give them fish so that they too could get in on the action. The rays showed no fear and were soon clambering up peoples’ backs or wrapping their wings around shoulders and arms as they positioned themselves for scraps while the sharks maintained their distance seemingly enjoying the show.

For many of the swimmers it was obviously their first encounter with any type of marine creature, let alone sharks and rays, and when they returned to the boat their excited chatter and broad smiles were testament to their enjoyment. This excursion is suitable for anyone, but when combined with the Dolphin Encounter (also at the Intercontinental Moorea) it appeared to me to be an ideal introduction for children to the marine world.

Raiatea - the Sacred Island Raiatea is a 45 minute flight from Tahiti-Faa’a. It is part of a group of islands known as the Society Islands, which include Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti.

Known in the legends as Hawaiki, Raiatea is considered to be the cradle of Polynesian culture and is in the middle of a triangle comprising of the Hawaian Islands to the north, Easter Island to the east and New Zealand to the west. Many of the great navigators and explorers of early Polynesia are thought to have come from Raiatea.

A destination in it’s own right, today Raiatea is famous for its spectacular lagoon, and as the home of yacht chartering. It is also stunningly beautiful with its high jagged peaks, cascading forests, and crystal clear lagoons dotted with motu or small islands. As you would expect, Raiatea offers excellent snorkelling, diving, fishing, windsurfing, and kite boarding, as well as hiking and eco tourism opportunities. Raiatea is also known for The Royal Marae of Taputaputea which is the largest and arguably the most important Marae in all of Polynesia.

Yacht Chartering The Leeward Islands are a subset of the Society Islands and include Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora. These islands are ideal for sailing only four hours apart by sail boat. There is an abundance of safe anchorages and breathtakingly beautiful lagoons and motus to visit.

There are several charter companies that offer a range of yachts from 36ft to 58ft. These yachts can be hired with a skipper and full crew including hostess and cook, or you can sail yourself providing you can prove you have experience. All yacht charters are quoted as there are dozens of variables depending on the number of passengers, crew requirements and of course the length of charter.

The charter companies are happy to customise an itinerary from three days plus Tahiti Yacht Charters offer an Iti iti Cruise (small, small) of four days and three nights and this year they have launched a new product, “Surf and Turf” which allows clients to stay three nights at the Relais Mahana on Huahine and charter a yacht for three nights to return to Raiatea.

Fare Vai Nui - Raiatea Isn’t it nice when you come across a property that ticks all the boxes and as you leave, think to yourself ”that was a really good experience”.

Fare Vai Nui, in Raiatea, is one such property.

Nestled on shores of a lagoon with a backdrop of rainforest covered mountains, it certainly is a stunning location. The four fares and restaurant complex were built in Bali and shipped over in kitset form for construction on Raiatea. That was 10 years ago but they still look brand new.

Beautifully finished in dark wood, they are immaculately maintained and presented. The Bali-style suits Tahiti and the resort's landscaping enhances the laid back feel. A long dock protrudes into the lagoon from the restaurant and there is a motorised catamaran at the end of the dock. There is also a generous waterside pool. The western coast is the sheltered side of the island and of course the sunsets out towards Bora Bora are to die for. Everything you would expect in Tahiti.

Even though Fare Vai Nui has only four accommodation units, the restaurant seats 50, a testament to its popularity with locals and passing tourists. The food was superb with a large selection of local dishes, from wild pork to the freshest of fish.

The owners of Fare Vai Nui, Jean-Jacque and his wife, are the perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. A trip to a motu, or a fishing excursion outside the lagoon were offered free of charge. From the moment I arrived and was whisked out on the lagoon to see a pod of dolphins, to my final moments before departure touring Raiatea’s picturesque capital, everything was “fantastique”. Based on Ia Ora criteria, places like Fare Vai Nui are setting the standard.

Vanira Lodge - Teahupoo, Tahiti Vanira Lodge is only a couple of kilometres from the famous Teahupoo surf break. Built on a plateau on the side of a mountain it affords magnificent views over the bay and main reef beyond.

The architects and builders employed to develop Vanira Lodge have done an excellent job.

Designed in the traditional style, these fare can best be described as ‘funky’. Much of the timber has been sourced from local beaches and rivers and moulded together into a rustic, Robinson Crusoe style complex. Even staircases and roof supports have been built from driftwood and the loft bedrooms complete with mosquito nets are a real treat.

Vanira Lodge boasts an excellent restaurant and a private swimming pool in their lush gardens.

One fare has a private jacuzzi and air conditioning while the others have ceiling fans. All the fares have kitchenettes.

Fare Aute - Moorea Fare Aute is situated on a white sandy beach adjacent to the road that circumnavigates the island. It has seven fares and one villa, built in the traditional style with thatched roof, a kitchenette and a large covered verandah. Extensive use of native timbers and colourful furnishings give it a tropical feel. It was neat and tidy and the grounds were well kept.

Kayaks are available free of charge on the beach in front of the resort and scooter and car hire are available on site. It was a pleasant property to stay at and the owners were very helpful. The nearest restaurant was five km away, as was the nearest store to get groceries, so ensure your clients know to stock up before the shops close at 6pm.

The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa is hosting the American Samoa Sanctuary Classic from March to June 2015. The Sanctuary Classic is a unique combination of a fishing and photo contest for children ages 10-18.

This is a great family oriented event that allows the community to compete for prizes.

National Park boosts local economy

Weekly flights take off to Ofu Ofu Beach is considered one of the finest stretches of sand anywhere in the Pacific and now Polynesian Airlines has begun servicing this beautiful spot with a weekly service from Pago Pago International Airport to Ofu Airport in the Manu'a Islands.

The service PAO2116 will depart PPG every Thursday at 8.45am and arrive in OFU at 9.15am. The return flight PAO2117 will depart OFU at 9.45am and arrive in PPG at 10.15am.

The new service will bring the total to five flights a week to the Manu'a Islands, four to Fitiuta Airport (FTI) on Ta'u Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays and one to OFU. The PPG/FTI flights depart at 8.45am and return at 9.15am FTI/PPG. Airfares to OFU and FTI are $160 return for adults, $135 for children and one way airfares start from $83.

A new report shows that 13,952 visitors to the National Park of American Samoa in 2014 spent $782,500 in villages near the park. That spending supported nine jobs in the local area and had a benefit to the local economy of $952,500. “The National Park of American Samoa is proud to welcome visitors from throughout American Samoa and around the world,” said Acting Superintendent Barbara Alberti. “We are delighted to share the story of this place and the experiences it provides. We also feature the park as a way to introduce our visitors to this part of the South Pacific and all that it offers. We appreciate the partnership and support of the villages and are glad to be able to give back by helping to sustain local communities.”

5% hotel tax to start in June A 5% hotel accommodation tax will be implemented June 15 by all accommodation facilities in American Samoa. The tax legislation was introduced by the Government and passed by both the House of Representatives and Senate last month and signed into law by the Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga. Revenue from the hotel tax (75%) has been earmarked for the Department of Port Administration for the improvement of services at Pago Pago International Airport.

‘Eua – untouched beauty ‘Eua island is just 17 ½ km from the main Tongan island of Tongatapu, and about a third of the size. Geologically it’s a world away, with hills, caves and canyons, the only river in Tonga, and a dramatic landscape perfect for a few days exploring. It’s a rustic, rough and ready place, where the vehicle of choice is a battered four-wheel drive, the public transport is a bare-back horse, and the only nightlife is kava drinking in a small hall or the ice cream disco on Friday nights.

Tonga gears up for whale season Between July and October, humpback whales migrate from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic to the warm, sheltered waters of the Kingdom of Tonga to mate and calf. Tonga is also one of very few places where swimming with whales is permitted. Skippers and guides must be certified and trained so that they understand whale behaviour and ensure the safety of the many visitors who come every year to take part this life-changing experience. Niue

Niue’s must do's Virna Smith, the Group Marketing Manager for Scenic Hotel Group recently had the opportunity to visit Niue and shares her 'Must Do's' in Niue with us.

Take a tour The first thing that you should do is book a ‘Guided Orientation Tour’ as soon as possible for the start of your stay. We did ours with Commodore. It took about four hours and our Host Keith shared plenty of local knowledge with us. On our trip, we travelled ‘clockwise’ around the island and stopped off at many of the chasms, sea tracks, whaling watching view points and pools.

Pack your togs, towel and reef shoes!

The tour gives you great insight into the ‘Must Do's' whilst you are on the Island. It's similar to the ‘Hop-on, Hop-off’ tours we do around cities, but ‘a la island style’.

Hire a car This is highly recommended as there is no public transport on the island. The island boasts 64km of tropical beauty and you honestly do not want to miss out on a single kilometre. (Niue driver’s license required – this is obtained from the local Police Station at a cost of $22.50).

Which of our 118 islands have you been to?

I’ve been to eight - Tahiti Nui, Tahiti Iti, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, Rangiroa, Moorea and Taha’a. So that means I have at least 110 reasons to go back again!

Describe the destination in one word: Idyllic.

One key piece of advice to agents when they have an enquiry?

Think outside the square and mix the accommodation up for your clients. Consider a pensione (a cultural highlight for me) in addition to an outer island stay at a gorgeous resort. And don’t forget about the lesser known islands which are just as stunning as their more famous neighbours. The options are endless!

Favourite sightseeing activity to do My husband and I are snorkelling enthusiasts and on our most recent Tahitian holiday we went on about five snorkelling adventures, the highlight of which was drift snorkelling in the Taha’a pass. I’ve also swum with sharks and rays in both Bora Bora and Moorea and loved it both times. Then there’s the 4WD tour in Bora Bora; I have many favourites!

What you are looking forward to doing next time you visit the Islands of Tahiti Last time we booked a pension and had our own pool villa. It was a great way to unwind before starting our Princess Cruise and accompanying adventurous activities so I would definitely do that again. I’d also love to experience a small ship cruise on Windstar and follow it up with a stay on Taha’a or an island I’ve never been to.

Eratap open and helping the local community After being closed for six weeks after damage from Cyclone Pam, Eratap Beach Resort recently reopened on April 26.

Tony Pittar, Eratap’s owner said “A huge amount of work was done to get opened so quickly and we are now operating as normal. And not only did we complete all necessary works but we raised AUD25,000 for our Eratap Village Fund and AUD31,000 for our Eratap Staff Fund. "Care Packs" were hand delivered to 1,500 people living throughout Eratap in five different distributions. This greatly helped local villagers recover from the devastating cyclone.”

VTO launches The Havannah set for July re-opening #YourHolidayHelps The Havannah Resort closed on the 13th March 2015 after sustaining some damages by Cyclone Pam. While the resort was due to re-open on the 1st of June 2015, during the course of the re-building further damages were found in the villas, which has delayed the reopening date of the resort to Monday 27th July 2015. New Zealand’s Fletcher Construction has been appointed to carry out the work and has committed to the above date. Plus all 65 staff have been kept on the payroll and have all been engaged in the beautification of the resort and its surroundings.

Iririki getting full upgrade The iconic Iririki Island Resort, Vanuatu is currently undergoing a full renovation and rebuilding process as a result of the damage caused by Cyclone Pam in March 2015. The upgrade and modernisation of this popular island resort is expected to be complete by 30th of November with re-opening scheduled for 1st December 2015.
