When you’re taking care of work, family and other commitments, it’s not always easy fitting in a week-long vacation. But that doesn’t mean having to staying home all together. If you’re pushed for time, heading away for a long weekend can still provide a much-needed rest, especially if you pick the right destination.

In the South Pacific, that right destination is Vanuatu and in late October, Islandtime was lucky enough to take three days off a busy schedule back home and find peace, quiet and some new perspectives in and around the capital of Port Vila.

Vanuatu has always been one of our favourite places to visit. As soon as you step off the plane you know the hustle and bustle has been left behind. The people are smiling, laughing and in no particular rush. Even the warm tropical breeze seems to blow at a gentle pace. It’s so laid back you can wind down instantly.

At around three hours flight time, making the trip up, to Vanuatu is quick and very simple. And because the international airport is only ten minutes drive from downtown Port Vila, you can be sitting poolside in no time at all if you choose to stay in or around the capital.

Accommodation for our short getaway was Villa 25, an award-winning boutique property set on its own private beach on Dream Cove, just outside Port Vila. I’d paid a brief visit to the property a few years back during Vanuatu’s annual TokTok Trade Show. Something about it stuck in my mind and I had always thought it would be a wonderful place to escape the busy life back home. We’d also published various updates about the property and written about it in our Vanuatu features, which just added to the motivation to experience it in person.

Now the wait was over! After a smooth flight with national carrier Air Vanuatu, we got through customs and were picked by Willie, a softly spoken local who pilots the Villa 25 van. The journey to Villa 25 takes you through the middle of town and out along the road that runs past the main container wharf, then a left turn has you through the gates of Dream Cove. All up Villa 25 is only 15 minutes from the airport and five minutes from the middle of Port Vila town.

Dream Cove is an exclusive enclave that’s home to a small collection of mostly private houses that hug the coastline. Quite simply, you couldn’t pick a more beautiful spot. The warm water is crystal-clear, with numerous snorkelling spots within 50 metres of the Villa 25 shoreline.

Guests can simply help themselves to a snorkel, mask and flippers and explore the coral reef formations that are full of tropical fish – including orange and white striped super-cute Nemos!

There are also kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to cruise around on. If you feel like a bit of exercise, you can take a 15 minute paddle down to Paradise Cove Resort, which has a ‘Sunset Hut’ set up for beachfront dining. The delicious fresh fish salad, cold beer and amazing views are definitely worth the effort.

With only three villas on the Villa 25 property, don’t go expecting the place to be buzzing with people or activity. That’s not the idea of it. Here, peace is guaranteed. If cooking seems like too much effort, Villa 25 can organise a local chef to come in and cook for you in the kitchen that sits under the property’s beautiful open-air-lowana. You simply give her a few personal preferences and she does the rest – buying the all ingredients and cooking it on the spot for you.

The other option is taking the short drive into town to dine at one of Port Vila’s many restaurants. On this trip we did just that, dining at one of our regular spots, as well as visiting a local institution for the first time.

Waterfront Restaurant and Bar is a little gem that sits alongside the marina. The atmosphere is very laid-back and most nights live music plays in the busy little bar. Seafood is a speciality here and I couldn’t help but order the Seafood Platter, which comes stacked with all sorts of goodies like oysters, prawns, fresh fish, and scampi.

Our other dinner excursion was to L’Houstalet. This iconic French restaurant has been open since 1973 and is well known for unusual dishes like flying fox (which the table next door seemed to thoroughly enjoy). I opted for another signature dish, the deliciously creamy Lobster Mornay, which was too big to finish. A concerned waiter actually asked me if there was something wrong with it – which I assured him there wasn’t.

If you’re coming to Vanuatu for a small dose of rest and relaxation that doesn’t it mean you have to spend every minute on the sun lounger. One of the great things about Vanuatu is there’s plenty to do and in our case we took a scenic flight with experienced local operators Vanuatu Helicopters.

Port Vila, its harbour and the surrounding coast is made up of many beautiful nooks and crannies and there's no better way to see them than by air. If you're staying in town, all you need to do is make your way to the booking office of Vanuatu Helicopters - they're located

harbourside by the Nambawan Café, next to the craft markets right in the middle of town. The helicopter itself operates off a floating pontoon in the harbour. Or if you’re staying in a place that has its own landing area like Villa 25, they can literally pick you up at the door.

On this trip we enjoyed 'The Best of Efate' tour. A spectacular 20 minute flight took us out over Mele Bay, past the Cascade Falls, across to Havannah Harbour, over the amazing reef formations off Lelepa Island and then back again. We even managed to spot some dugong sunning themselves in the shallow waters below.

With a variety of tours on offer, you can simply choose the one that fits your time frame, right up to the half-day adventures like their amazing Ambrym Volcano tour.

If you’re a fishing fan you might like to try one of the charters that run out of Port Vila. If you’re on a short break, the half-day options are ideal. Options vary according to what type of fish you're trying to target, but regardless of what you're after, Vanuatu's waters have plenty of fish - from big mahi mahi and wahoo right up to giant marlin.

If you're based in Port Vila, all you really need to do is walk to the marina just down from the Grand Hotel and Casino, as most the charters are based here. And again, if you’re staying in a place like Vila 25, they can pick you up straight off the shore.

If you’re a golfer you can pop out to Port Vila Country Club for a lazy nine holes. It’s just past the airport so it’s nice and handy. Clubs can be hired and if you're keen to test your skills against the locals, visitors are welcome to join in on the weekly competitions. Win or lose it's guaranteed to be great fun and you'll have the chance to mix and mingle with the local players.

Other fun half-day trips include a visit to the Mele Cascades, taking a drive up to the lovely Summit Gardens overlooking Mele Bay or going on the Vanuatu Jungle Zipline. As we said, there is plenty to do, even if you’ve come to Vanuatu to do nothing at all!

On top of all that you can enjoy the activities in town. The cafés and restaurants in Port Vila are always a highlight. The beef on Santo is considered world-class and there are plenty of Kiwi expats who will swear it's better than our own – which is saying a lot. The seafood is absolutely first class - as you might expect from a country with such clean water Vanuatu's clean waters.

Add in the French influence from Vanuatu’s colonial past, Asian-inspired tastes, a fusion of Pacific flavours and a trend towards using more and more local ingredients, and you really do have a mouthwatering selection of eateries to choose from on any short break.

If you want to pick up a few souvenirs or some locally made products, there are enough shops to satisfy most. And should you feel like a flutter, the small casino at The Grand Hotel and The Palms Casino at the Holiday Inn are both a lot of fun to visit.

Regardless of what you’re looking for, you’ll find something to suit on a short break to Vanuatu.

While we stayed in the beautiful boutique property of Villa 25, you can go the other way and enjoy the accommodation and facilities of the big properties like The Grand Hotel and Casino, Iririki Island Resort, Le Lagon or The Holiday Inn. Or you could take the middle ground and choose the laid-back luxury of properties like Mangoes Resort or The Terraces.

Whatever you decide, you’ll be guaranteed to have a great time and return back home feeling refreshed, recharged and planning how you to get back there as soon as possible.

See awe-inspiring Ambyrn with Vanuatu Helicopters Looking for a totally unique Vanuatu experience? Try Vanuatu Helicopters’ Ambrym volcano tour. It takes around three hours in total, with around two hours of flying time. Islandtime writer and man of the sea Scott Lee, explores the northern tip of Fiji’s two biggest islands in search of a quality South Pacific catch.

The Great Sea Reef, Vanua Levu The South Pacific islands are blessed with some world’s most beautiful waters. They are also home to numerous first-class fishing options that can keep even the keenest angler satisfied.

Among these fine fishing destinations is the northern coast of Fiji’s Vanua Levu. If you have clients who want to catch fish, it would be hard to find anywhere better than Nukubati Resort.

Nukubati Island is surrounded by a labyrinth of reef systems stretching out 10km to the Great Sea Reef. There is no 'should have been here yesterday' excuses. Results are as close to guaranteed as you’ll get.

Because of its position inside the main reef, the seas around Nukubati are usually flat, often glassy, and there is over one thousand square kilometres of reef to explore. Species targeted include walu (Spanish mackerel), coral trout, yellowfin tuna, bluefin trevally and giant trevally but anything is possible and the writer has recorded 17 fish of 11 different species on one very memorable morning.

Most anglers visiting the tropics want to catch giant trevally and it is here that the guides at Nukubati excel. Fishing with poppers, beside the reefs at low tide, and on top of the reefs at full tide, these monsters are an anglers delight. The larger fish take more than an hour of skill and strength from the angler and the experience of the skipper to bring to the boat. Most are released to fight another day.

Nukubati’s guides are also skilled at salt water flyfishing and there are plenty of sandbars and mangrove forests to wade in search of silver and bluefin trevally.

Nukubati’s restaurant specialises in all manner of seafood so the better table fish are kept and served that day. For a fisherman there is nothing quite like bringing home the bacon and I can confess to proud moments as the other guests have applauded my success and enjoy the freshest of fresh bounty. On occasion the staff have even put my name on the menu "grilled fresh coral trout caught by Scott at the sandbank this morning". Magic!

Volivoli Resort, Viti Levu The northern tip of Viti Levu is also paradise for serious fishing fans. A great way to explore these waters is Volivoli Resort. Situated at Raki Raki on the northernmost tip of Viti Levu, two hours drive north of Nadi airport. It’s a five-star resort that is popular with families, fishermen and divers.

Built in 2005, it has stylish modern villas and rooms, a large sand floor bar, a restaurant and swimming pool with swimup bar. The resort is beautifully laid out, taking full advantage of the resort’s position on a rocky point that is surrounded on three sides by ocean. Towering exotic and coconut palms, huge mango and flame trees dominate with lush tropical gardens filled with frangipani and hibiscus completing the picture. The owners have enhanced what nature provided and sympathetically developed the property with plantings, modern buildings and a network of concrete paths to present a truly exceptional property.

Volivoli’s location, in close proximity to the Ra passage and the famous Bligh Waters, are it’s main attraction for divers and fishermen. With strong currents and abundant reef structures these waters are an aqua enthusiasts dream.

Most fishing is done from the resort’s 34ft centre console, “Half Cast”, which is set up for casting and trolling. While the boat is capable of going anywhere in the Bligh Waters, most of the fishing is done within 10km of home giving guests more time fishing and less travelling. Testimonials on their website and Facebook page point to some excellent results on recent trips.

As well as being the departure point for the live-aboard dive charter boat Fiji Siren, the resort also operates a dive operation of their own. Ra Diving charters offer trips to the reef systems in Bligh Waters, know for its soft corals and abundant fish life. They have a brand new dive shop which has equipment for up to 20 divers that will be open by Christmas. Ra Diving Charters are Padi and SSI certified.

With its fine fishing options and multitude of accommodation choices, Fiji is a great spot for a fishing holiday. The season lasts all-year-round, which offers travellers the flexibility of flying in whenever it suits. And of course there a huge range of species that can be targeted. Visitors also have the choice of staying in resorts that specialise in fishing and diving, such as Nukubati and Volivoli, or you can simply stay in the resort of your choice and tap into the expertise of one of many fishing charters operators. In other words, Fiji is fishing heaven.

Diving the deep blue.

Diving goes hand-in-hand with fishing and at Volivoli they have an underwater experience that is incredibly hard to beat. The Fiji Siren is a purpose-built liveaboard dive charter vessel based at Volivoli Resort, the northern-most point on Fiji’s Viti Levu. It’s the latest addition to the Siren Fleet run by Worldwide Dive and Sail based in Indonesia.

The 40 metre long Fiji Siren has eight large airconditioned cabins, each with it’s own ensuite. There is a huge indoor cabin with comfortable seating and a bar, and an even bigger aft deck set up for dining and socialising. The forward deck is set out with 16 diving stations, one for each guest when full, and the systems they have in place ensure hassle free and easy boarding and disembarking for all.

There are eight fresh water stations for rinsing diving and camera equipment and lockers for storing towels, diving computers and the like at each station. There’s plenty of hot water for post dive showers on deck or in the private cabins and the main cabin are equipped with tables for servicing camera gear and recharging batteries etc.

As worldwide leaders in live-aboard diving charters the Siren crew are obsessed with diver comfort and safety. Before each dive the cruise director presents a detailed briefing ensuring all divers are informed of the depths, currents, expected terrain and any interesting features to look out for. Divers are organised into groups with a dive master assigned to each group and a dive tender accompanies each group throughout each dive.

From their base at Volivoli Resort the Fiji Siren explores the pristine waters between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, an area know as Bligh Water. The reefs are vibrant and healthy and the fish life prolific. During our six night voyage we experienced wall dives, drift dives, swim-throughs and caves. We swam between reef structures and dived bommies that disappeared thousands of metres below us. We saw sharks, rays, dolphins, whales and colourful reef fish of every description and huge schools of pelagic and bait fish - pretty well the best Fiji has to offer and most were well away from the typical tourist dive sites.

Liveaboard diving charters are designed for diving enthusiasts wanting to experience many different dive sites in a relatively short time, and the Fiji Siren certainly delivers on all fronts.

The social atmosphere and camaraderie of liveaboards will especially appeal to couples who both dive and groups of friends who wish to enjoy their chosen sport together. The Fiji Siren would particularly appeal to diving clubs and private charters are easily catered for.

The group enjoyed five fun-filled days visiting numerous hotels, discovering Noumea by completing an action packed treasure hunt, kayaking at Ilot Maitre, exploring Isle des Pins and staying at the new Sheraton Deva Resort & Spa. The feedback from the famil was fantastic, with product managers really enjoying the opportunity to see and experience New Caledonia's uniqueness and diversity. "I believe it is a unique destination", said House of Travel's Sharma Smith. "It is different to others in our South Pac portfolio. If clients want a little taste of Europe it's right on our doorstep".

The Solomon Islands will feature in two Lindblad Expeditions cruise programmes in 2015.

A taste of success at the inaugural Food festival!

Norfolk Island is a hidden gem in the South Pacific and is the next up and coming food and leisure destination; this was Australian celebrity chef Dominique Rizzo’s comment at the conclusion of a very successful food festival.

Dominique was joined by Fast Ed another Australian celebrity chef who bought pizazz to the week-long festival! The programme included cooking demonstrations and a Galloping Gourmet dinner where people visited three stunning locations for three courses. Canapés at sunset, a main course served in an old convict home and a sweet selection of desserts, tea and coffee at a cliff-top property.

Wetl’s is the local word for food and the Wild Wetl’s gala evening showcased the skills of local chefs who cooked up a delicious four-course dinner; there was also a food and arts and craft market held in the World Heritage compound of Kingston. The festival concluded with pancakes by the bay, held at Emily Bay lagoon, a stunning location for breakfast and entertainment under the famous Norfolk pine trees. The 2015 event is set down for February 9-13 and visiting golfers are more than welcome to participate.

Numbers keep on rising Hawaii visitor numbers continue to go from strength to strength with October arrivals from New Zealand rising 6.1 percent to 5717 visitors. For the year-to-date through October, arrivals from New Zealand have grown 26.3 percent to 54,291 visitors – a great result for the destination.

Google to reveal wonderful underwater world We all know Google Street View. The fantastic online tool lets us take a virtual tour of streets and roads all over the world. Well, American Samoa is going one step further. Or should we say under.

American Samoa will soon be available in both underwater and in Google street view virtual 360 degree high resolution imagery, which will allow an individual to navigate and experience the depths and scenery at their leisure on the internet.

Catlin Seaview Survey Underwater Earth and Google Street View in partnership with the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa have begun a mission to map sanctuary sites. They include Fagatele Bay, Fagalua/Fogama’a, Aunu’u, Ta’u (home of the Valley of the Giants and the largest coral porites in the world), and Muliava (Rose Atoll Marine National Monument).

Led by Richard Vevers, Executive Director and Christophe Bailhache, Head of Technology and Operations the Catlin Seaview Underwater Earth Team has traveled to more than 21 countries to document the world’s coral reefs and reveal them to all in high resolution, 360 degree panoramic vision. This is the first time any country has had Google 360 degree imagery for land and underwater.

The images will be released during 2015, and it is hoped this will open opportunities for visitors abroad to learn more about American Samoa in 360 degree imagery and virtual tours.

Hit the local market One of the true joys of travel is being able to mix, mingle and eat like the locals! Which makes a visit to the vibrant Fagatogo Marketplace a must-do. Full of fresh fruit, flowers, handicrafts and souvenirs, this is the place to pick up some goodies to take home, and of course rub shoulders with the locals.

Going by foot a fine way to explore Like many Pacific Islands, American Samoa is blessed with some wonderful hiking trails. They also cater to a wide variety of fitness levels and make their way through a range of landscapes including rainforests, beach walks and steep mountain trails.

If you’ve got the energy for a half-day trek, try the 4km walk from the village of A’oloaufou leading down to A’asu on Massacre Bay. Depending on the weather, the ground can be muddy and slippery.

Plus the trail can become overgrown, in which case, hiring a local guide in A’oloaufou is a very good idea.

A ton of underwater fun in Tonga The Kingdom of Tonga is home to some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs and marine life. It is also uncrowded, untouched and full of unique sea life just waiting to be explored.

Scenic Group adds Matavai Resort to the family The Scenic Hotel Group has taken over ownership of the Matavai Resort Niue, and as of December 1, the property will take on its new name of Scenic Matavai Resort Nuie.

Retail consultants get taste of Niue’s diversity Hogan and Associates, Susie Williams (pictured front row, fourth right) recently took a select group of retail consultants to Niue to enjoy the rich diversity of experiences Niue has to offer. Susie reported excellent feedback from the group with Louise from World Travellers describing her underwater experience as having the “best visibility I have ever seen.”

On-water encounters included a dolphin encounter like no other with local spinner dolphins putting on quite a show for the visitors. Other highlights for the group included the quality of the food with great dining at Kai Ika, Falala Fa and Vaiolama with its cliff top 18-hole mini-golf course.

Scenic Hotel Group Managing Director Brendan Taylor says the Matavai property’s stunning location, reputation and standard of presentation made it a natural addition to the group’s South Pacific portfolio.

The group’s three ‘wahoo-hines’ put their fishing skills to the test with a highly successful day hauling in a total of 10 fish which made for some unique photo opportunities. In the evening, the group enjoyed spectacular sunsets and ocean-scapes from the deck of the Matavai Resort, described by Sam from Travel Select as being “fabulous” and the “best cliff-top deck I have seen.” The group was accompanied by newly appointed Niue Tourism Board member Saluma Hunt (pictured centre front.)

“The property is the perfect addition to the Scenic family and philosophy of promoting unique unspoilt locations which will be a welcomed new experience for travellers wanting an alternative stunning Pacific Island adventure” Mr Taylor said.

The 54-room complex incorporates 44 hotel rooms, 10 apartments and a three-bedroom Brett Inkster villa that are all airconditioned and well appointed. Additional facilities include a restaurant bar and two spectacular freshwater swimming pools nestled amongst tropical gardens, offering 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean.

Changes at the hotel also include the appointment of Brett Inkster as the Opening General Manager of Scenic Matavai Resort Niue. Brett will lead the team at Scenic Matavai Resort Niue over the opening period, focusing on implementing Scenic Hotel Group standards and best practices. Brett comes with over 26 year’s hospitality experience, 15 of which have been within Scenic Group Hotel Group as a General Manager.
