The thought of getting away from a cold Kiwi winter is always tempting. For singles or couples the equation is fairly simple, – book a flight, grab some accommodation and away you go. For families there's a bit more to consider. When you're travelling with kids in tow, the destination and choice of accommodation can make or break what's supposed to be a relaxing holiday for all.

What you’re after is a laid-back destination where there’s plenty for everyone to do, but you can do it at your own pace and with minimal fuss – no rushing, no stress, no worries. It also helps if the activities and dining options are reasonably priced as costs soon add up when Mum and Dad are paying for themselves and all the kids!

Accommodation needs to be family friendly - that means rooms set up for the family unit, a place for kids to 'run wild' under safe supervision (i.e a kids' club), and babysitting services which are essential for parents who want to pop out for a romantic dinner. And the South Pacific destination which ticks these boxes? Rarotonga in the beautiful Cook Islands.

Easy exploration for all.

Everything is close by on Rarotonga! In fact the coastal road that circles the island is only 32km, so if you stay under the 50km per hour speed limit you can go the whole way around in less than an hour. Of course that will never happen because there are far too many fun things for the family to see and do.

Scooters are the most popular choice of traveller transport, but families can opt for a rental car or simply jump on the public buses that circle the island. Either way you’ll always have the freedom to explore.

A good place to start is Avarua, Rarotonga’s main town centre. It’s a laid back little town with more than enough shops, cafes and restaurants to keep everyone busy, plus there’s some interesting sights like the Para O Tane Palace and the National Museum. The main market is also worth investigating and another great way for everyone to experience the local way of life.

If you're doing the circuit, i.e, driving around the island, you’ll find a variety of locally run cafes, restaurants and bars. So when you feel the need, simply pull over and stop for a bite or refreshing drink. Visitors find the food exceptional, especially the seafood which is as fresh as you'll find anywhere in the world. As a general rule, the cost of eating out is on a par with what you'll find back home, so there's no need to worry about paying over-the-top prices.

With all the fantastic things Rarotonga has to offer literally at your fingertips, it comes down to picking a place to stay, and here Rarotonga’s major resorts provide the best options. They have a whole host of facilities purpose-built for family fun, so there’s no need for parents to worry about the kids getting bored. Plus they often have kids' deals to make the stay affordable.

The stunning Muri Lagoon is also made for exploring and its shallow waters are safe, which gives peace-of-mind for every parent. The lagoon and its uninhabited islands are the place for octopus hunting, kayak safaris, fishing, sand castle building, coconut husking, basket weaving and lots lots more. Children even enjoy the honorary status of becoming Island Princesses and Junior Warriors!

Teenage kids aren’t left out either. The snorkelling is fantastic, plus there’s kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding and sailing on offer. Outside the kids club, the resort has a full programme of daily activities which are more suited to older children or teens. Snorkelling and swimming in the resorts freshwater pool or lagoon is always popular, there's tennis and a games room for some fun-filled family entertainment. Like the other major resort's, The Edgewater also has an in-house babysitting service, so Mum and Dad can get their 'me' time.

Family deals As well as being child friendly, The Edgewater can be also be wallet friendly. Children 12 years and under stay free when traveling with parents who can choose from Garden rooms set in tropical gardens to Lagoon View options with interconnecting rooms. On top of all the fun and games, Moko's provides an interactive educational experience, where children can learn about the unique culture and nature of Rarotonga through the hands-on daily kid's activities programmes. They can dance the famous Cook Islands ‘ura (hula), make their own ei garland (lei) from fresh flowers they have picked themselves, and play the ukulele strings or beat an authentic hollowed-out log drum. They can also learn the traditional Polynesian games children used to play in yesteryear such as coconut bowling. (Who said kids don't learn anything when they're on holiday!)

Kids Stay Play Free The icing on the cake for parents? Children play free at Moko's Kids Club and they also stay free. Yep, two children aged up to 11 years stay free when sharing a room with up to two adults. And up to four children can stay free in the fully self-contained two-bedroom Beachside Suite and Grand Beachfront Suite categories. In other words, everyone is happy!

In the evenings, Moko's hosts Kid's Movie Night. Plus kids aged up to 11 years Play Free at the Moko's Kids Club, and under fours are allowed to join in if they're being supervised by a parent or caregiver. Moko's Kids Club is open year-round, Monday through Saturday with three daily sessions - 9am to 12noon, 2pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. On top of all that kids can tuck into free snacks and drinks at each session, so there's no calls of 'I'm hungry' when they get back to Mum and Dad!

If Mum and Dad are travelling with toddlers or even babies, The Rarotongan has the Banana Beach Playland Crèche. It's set up for kids 0-four years old, it's packed with toys and other baby essentials such as cots and nappies, and of course is a safe, fun environment for the wee ones.

Like Moko's, it's open all year-round Monday-Saturday, and has the same 9am to 12noon, 2pm to 5pm, and 7pm to 9pm sessions. The cost of these three-hour sessions is around NZ$45.

Virgin Australia goes kid friendly Virgin Australia has released a children's discount fare on flights from Auckland to Rarotonga - the only airline to do so. Depending on the airfare selected (based on seat category, dates of travel etc.) this represents an average discount of $200 per child on a return journey from Auckland to Rarotonga. These discounts came into effect on 1 May 2013 and the following represents the fare values as a percentage of the published base fares for all cabins.

Big fun for big kids.

Family fun isn't just restricted to the little ones. The Rarotongan has set up a Teen Zone especially for the older kids. It's a place where 12-16 year olds can get into activities like the air hockey competition, ukulele and drumming sessions, beach soccer, table tennis, snorkelling, pool table competition, dodge ball, touch rugby and more!

Romance in the Cook Islands The perfect answer to the big question A guy has got down on one bended knee and popped the big question to his partner. All going well the answer is 'yes'. Celebrations and congratulations ensue. And then.....the planning begins! One of the most important (and most debated) questions for any couple is where the wedding will take place. Do you stay local? Do you go further afield? Or do you make it extra special and fly away to a tropical paradise where just about every detail is taken care of before you even arrive? The Cook Islands have long been a popular place for Kiwis to get married and it’s no surprise why. Stay in Rarotonga or head to Aitutaki.

All flights from New Zealand to the Cook Islands land in Rarotonga and any couple who chooses to get married here will be spoiled for choice. There are numerous resorts, hotels and villa set-ups that can provide the perfect backdrop for a dream wedding. If a couple want to go a little further, Aitutaki, the Cook's other main tourist stop, is less than one hour's flight with Air Raro. World famous for its coral lagoon, Aitutaki is quite heavenly, and properties like Aitutaki Lagoon Resort and Spa and Pacific Resort Aitutaki are just two of the properties who set up weddings.

Signing is simple.

Getting married in the Cook Islands is also easy from a legal point of view. As a general rule most South Pacific nations require a 30 day wait before the marriage, but in the Cook Islands couples can marry three days after landing in the country. If that isn’t quite quick enough, couples in a particular hurry can pay a small fee to waive this residency requirement! Otherwise the legal side of a Cook Islands marriage is straightforward. The only paperwork needed are birth certificates (in English), original passports and any Decree Absolute (divorce documents), if this applies.

The Cook Islands Wedding Checklist.

The legal requirements of getting married in the Cook Islands are straightforward, but there are a few things that Kiwis should take note of: • If a bride or groom is under the age of 21 they will need written parental consent.

• An application for a marriage licence must be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages at least three working days before the wedding ie, New Zealanders cannot apply for a licence before they arrive.

• Applicants for a wedding licence must produce a passport, and if divorced, a copy of the Decree Absolute.

Romance sealed. Romance rekindled.

With the wedding celebrations over, there's only one thing left to do - have a wonderful honeymoon. One of the best things about getting married in paradise is you can stay exactly where you are for the honeymoon. That could mean staying in exactly the same place you had the wedding or maybe shifting to a couples only resort. If you get married in Rarotonga, there's always the option of popping over to Aitutaki for the honeymoon. Of course if you get married in New Zealand then coming to the Cook Islands for the honeymoon is a great choice, too!

Quite simply, you couldn’t hope to find a more romantic part of the world to celebrate your lifelong commitment, but you certainly don't need that as an excuse to enjoy these islands. The Cook Islands are about as far from hustle and bustle as you can get. Add that to some of the South Pacific’s most spectacular natural scenery and you have a true recipe for romance. Sleep in, swim, snooze in the afternoon, kick back with a cocktail on any number of picture perfect beaches and explore the islands' many attractions. This is a place to relax and enjoy each other's company, which is just what this special part of the world was created for.

The Cook Islands is coming to you!

Cook Islands Tourism is pleased to advise that Miriama Herman, our New Zealand Marketing Executive, will be on the road visiting travel agencies around the country in what will become a permanent part of her overall role.

Palm Grove are pleased to announce the completion of our new swimming pool and patio/BBQ area, as well as our Garden Studio upgrade! The Garden Studio makeover includes new kitchens, bathrooms, and patios. This makeover combined with the lounge refurbishment and new furnishings put in place last year means our Garden Studios are better than even before – with no price increase!

We are eagerly anticipating our Beachfront Studio makeover, scheduled to commence on 14 November 2013. Surfing, big game fishing and scuba diving are a good place to start for adventure seekers, and for soft adventure there's excellent hiking, kayaking and cycling, plus a host of cultural experiences where you can learn about Samoa's history and the way of life here.

Taking the kids out and about.

One of the great things about Samoa is there's plenty to see and do outside the resorts. If the kids are a little bit older, taking a tour is a great way to spend the day or half day. Apia-based Samoa Scenic Tours is the biggest and most experienced tour operator in the country - they've been operating for 43 years. Their full-day (9.30am-4.30pm) South Coast tour is one of their most popular. It takes in a mix of cultural sites such as the impressive Bahai Temple outside Apia, natural wonders like Papapaitai Falls and Sopoaga Falls and includes a two-hour beach/ lunch stop, complete with a delicious BBQ and optional beer for the grown-ups.

If the kids' patience won't last that long there are some fantastic half-day tours running from 9.30am to 1.30pm or 1.30pm to 5pm. While Seabreeze and Sinalei cater to the high end of the market, you can still have a romantic Samoan holiday without breaking the bank. Down on the southeastern coast of Upolu, Lalomanu Beach is the one of the best beaches anywhere in Samoa, if not the South Pacific. But far from being the reserve of high-end resorts, this stunning stretch of white sand and clear blue waters is the domain of the budget traveller. Places like Litia Sini Beach Resort, Taufua Beach Fales and Taufia's Litia Sini Beach Resort Beach Bungalows have options starting from around NZ$50 a night and going up to about $130 a night. Sure, it's pretty basic and in some cases guests have to share bathroom and shower facilities, but the beach and the festive atmosphere more than make up for any lack of luxury. And hey, what could be more romantic than sleeping in a traditional Samoan fale right on the beach and falling asleep to the sound of waves breaking on the distant reef.

The Samoan currency is the Tala (dollar) and Sene (cents) and it is easy to exchange major foreign currencies.

Right next door to Le Lagoto you’ll find the Kiwi owned and Kiwi managed Savaii Lagoon Resort. Tourism reps lap up Fijian hospitality

Every year travel and tourism representatives from around the Pacific descend upon one "fortunate" resort to exhibit their wares, conduct buyer-seller appointments and work their magic for future travellers to the Pacific Islands.

The BFTE drew to a close after three days of intensive buyer/seller appointments. The festivities wrapped up with a themed party where everyone was encouraged to dress in a costume representing one of Fiji Airways’ many departure ports.

Holidaymakers are at the mercy of those who work extremely hard during their days at the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange and arguably party just as hard in the evening.

The first prize went to Niue's Uncle Sam outfits and also potentially provided the next great marketing idea for the Niuean team - an "Uncle Sam needs you!" approach.

This year the BFTE was set in the beautiful Intercontinental Fiji Resort from May 15-17 and ran as smoothly as expected. The fresh, vibrant Intercontinental provided the ideal location and facilities, along with exquisite accommodation for many of the representatives.

It was an excellent night, featuring delicious cuisine, including impressive tuna sashimi, exquisite lobster, rice paper rolls, prawn skewers and chocolate mousse.

With assistance from sponsors Westpac, Fiji Airways, AON and Rosie Holidays, navigating the event was a breeze. Those of us who were fortunate to fly into Nadi on the new, rebranded Fiji Airways A330 experienced a spacious, comfortable and true Fijian introduction to our trip.

The new decor, personal entertainment systems, superb service and attention to detail have successfully re-launched the airline. Even before you leave Auckland you feel you are in Fiji time. Bula! As well as Fiji, Niue, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti were all represented in the business rooms of the Intercontinental.

The opening drinks on Wednesday night, sponsored by Westpac, included fire dance performances and was a chance for people to reconnect with past contacts and meet new people outside of their business appointments. The Kama Bar provided the base for numerous after-party "discussions".

The night was also marked by superb dance performances, singing and a sensational finish, with beautiful floating lanterns farewelled into a clear Fijian night, embellished with a wonderful display of fireworks.

Hosanna and Jennifer from Intercontinental Fiji made sure that everything was taken care of for the media representatives, who were given access to a wide variety of activities and made to feel very comfortable.

With so much achieved over the week, except perhaps flattering golf scores, and with all parties reconnected, is it now too early to be looking forward to next year?

All the Club Intercontinental ground floor units also feature their own plunge pool.

If the opportunity arises to visit the local Malomalo primary school, take it! These pupils are the most welcoming children you're ever likely to meet. The Intercontinental Fiji has directly contributed through its guest donations to the school and adjoining kindergarten, as has the Fiji water fund. The school had no power, water or sewage prior to the resort’s involvement. This has all changed now and visitors at the school are treated to a song and dance from the kids in an informal, friendly setting, making a great experience.

Surfing in the area is also very good, with the Fiji Surf Company happy to take care of you, and the concierge at the Intercontinental organises everything. There are various places in the bay to surf, or you can head to the world famous Cloudbreak, depending on your level of experience.

The Natadola Bay golf course is a genuine par 72 championship-style course which most golfers find enjoyable, despite its challenges. The true beauty of Natadola Bay becomes evident at the water and coral beside the fourth hole, a par three. The challenging short par four 12th leads like a well-constructed Japanese garden into the sea (with or without the horses at the back of the green). This golf course totally distinguishes this resort from many others in the Pacific.

The food and beverages at the club are excellent. For genuinely good golfers or those seeking a golf trip, but with five-star island resort luxury, it's hard to think of many in this category. Just make sure you take some spare balls, it can be a struggle off the tee with some of the long carries to the fairway.

If it all gets too much and the stress does get the better of you, there's always the spa at the Intercontinental. The treatments are classic and of reliable Fijian quality, but the surrounds and treatment options set this spa apart from the rest. When you've had every last bit of stress removed by the magic hands of one of the spa staff, a delicious, fresh concoction of fruit and vegetables, juiced but still slightly chunky, provides the final chapter in your detox.

Yasawa Islands The islands off the western coast of the mainland are arguably the most accessible smaller islands in the South Pacific. Radisson Blu If you’re after a resort holiday with a quick travel time and dependable quality, Denarau is the right place to go. The numerous high-end resorts compliment each other, with over 30 restaurants and easy transport between them all on the Bula bus.

The Radisson Blu in Denarau is well established as a beacon of the true, family-friendly resort.

The ability to enjoy easily accessible seclusion, privacy and fine dining all make this a resort for those wishing for time out from the daily routine or a special adult resort experience.

The four restaurants at the Radisson cover all the bases, from casual to fine dining. The Cross Restaurant is at the peak of its powers, with an extensive wine list featuring many New Zealand whites and an abundance of Australian reds.

The menu has an extensive range of fine dining options. Entrees like the teriyaki-flavoured seared tuna or the detailed and delicious tapas plate are impossible to decide between.

The menus are equally enticing, with fresh fish of the day served with scallops and shiitake mushrooms.

Lobster is on the menu if available, as is pork, chicken and Angus pure steak, as is expected for a fine dining restaurant. The main difference here is that the ocean laps against the shore only metres from where you dine.

Dinner ends with another interesting surprise, kava-flavoured ice-cream! It’s an interesting combination of original flavours and inventiveness, with a vanilla base and a definite hint of kava to give it a bit of a kick. This dessert is designed to numb the tongue. Make sure you try it.

On the other side of the Cross is the Blu restaurant and bar, where breakfast is served. It has an all-day menu and is conveniently set beside the family pool. If you need refreshments or the children get peckish, it's all there.

Radisson Blu

Speaking of children, the Radisson takes pride in the quality of its kids club, which will be refurbished this year. The club not only provides parents with some free time, but also contributes to local schools. Every Thursday night there is a rubber duck race in the wonderful white-water slide pool. Each duck costs $5 and all the money raised goes toward helping these schools.

The Radisson is said to have the largest suites on Denarau at a generous 78 square metres.

These can be booked with the adjoining studio rooms for bigger groups or families, as they can easily accommodate up to eight guests.

One of the extraordinary things about The Radisson and Denarau is the ability of the staff to arrange anything and everything you need.

With Adrenaline Sports and Rosie Holidays having desks on site, whatever you want to do in Fiji can be organised right there. If you decide to stay for longer, there is even a store so you don’t have to eat in the restaurant every morning, or you can buy a six-pack of beer for early evening drinks in the privacy of your room.

The staff are impeccable, wonderfully caring but extremely friendly and great with children.

The four pools, which were recently voted among the top 10 hotel pools in the world, are a feature of this property. The family pool and the adults-only pool are lagoon style.

The surrounding white sand provides a little taste of the outer islands. The water slide is also a great feature and is very popular.

The Radisson is the newest property in Denarau as it has just had its fifth anniversary. This shows in the fresh decor and attention to detail.

Aviation company adds a spark to island travel The new owners of Pacific Island Air & Seaplanes and Helicopters (Fiji) have announced plans for a major upgrade and expansion in Fiji.

The new owners are John Currie and Sons. The family also owns New Zealand’s largest air emergency medical service provider, Garden City Helicopters Ltd, and own and operate Vanuatu Helicopters Ltd. Their company, Garden City Helicopters Ltd, is said to be one of the region’s most experienced aviation companies, with over 29 years’ experience providing helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft operations with a Platinum safely record.

Pacific Island Air & Seaplanes has operated in Fiji for 14 years with fixed wing aircraft and seaplanes. Garden City Helicopters saw an opportunity to purchase the established seaplane operation with existing experienced staff and add helicopters to the company’s fleet in Fiji. The two companies will be marketed under one umbrella company – Pacific Island Air, so clients can book with one operator who can deliver all three modes of air transfer.

“This is a first for Fiji and we are positive about future opportunities,” says the new General Manager, John Ambler. They currently operate one six-passenger twinengine Squirrel helicopter, two four-passenger Beaver seaplanes and two twin-engine Islander planes seating eight passengers.

“We have the flexibility and capability of flying to any destination in Fiji. Passengers can fly by seaplane one way and return by helicopter, offering two experiences from one operator,” Ambler said.

The company is based at Nadi Airport and has a check-in desk at the domestic terminal, so ground staff can meet passengers arriving on international flights and escort them to their domestic flight transfer. As well as a complete re-branding, other expansion plans include building a new hangar at the current base opposite the airport terminal. It will be big enough to house all the new aircraft and a new air-conditioned guests’ lounge.

“We are excited to bring some serious competition to the marketplace in Fiji which will be to the benefit of all,” Ambler said. The company has plans to develop a further site near Denerau which will offer scenic flights and day trips to the islands, and has formed partnerships with other tourist operators to offer adventure packages and activities.

Tahiti TravelMart Tahiti has built its reputation on the promise of romance, its pristine marine environment, its vibrant culture and its proud, hospitable people. Islandtime writer, Scott Lee, went to this year's TravelMart at the end of May to see why Kiwis are discovering Tahiti in ever-increasing numbers.

The Tahiti TravelMart was buzzing. International visitors grew 3.8 percent overall in 2012 and New Zealand lead the way with stellar growth of 30.7 percent, the largest increase, followed

by Australia with 24.1 percent. Land based packages were up 30 percent and cruises up 7 percent. Despite these increases tourism numbers are up a further 7.8 percent in 2013.

A new government, has confirmed ongoing support for Tahiti’s number one industry, and Tourisme Tahiti are in the process of a global rebrand and planning increased strategic activity.

With such a positive background there was much to talk about as the buyers and sellers got down to the industry equivalent of speed dating.

Being the "who’s he?" at a who’s who party, I was invited to join some of the buyers and by the end of the day I had a good understanding of what makes Tahiti so special.

Tahiti’s product offering is simply sensational. The deeper you look the more opportunities you discover. No matter whether your clients are looking for top class hotels, a relaxing cruise vacation, land or water based adventures, or authentic cultural experiences, their expectations will be exceeded. It is truly a destination that offers something for everyone. With 118 islands in five archipelagos, spread over some four million square kilometers (the size of Europe) you are spoilt for choice.

While most observers know of the vibrancy of Papeete, the overwater bungalows, the luxury cruising and charter boat options, a closer look at Tahiti Tourisme’s travel planner (2013-14 edition due out soon) reveals dozens of activities, destinations and holiday options that are bound to appeal to Kiwis.

Tahiti-Faa’a Airport on Tahiti is the gateway to the country so it’s not surprising that Papeete is the most popular destination for Kiwis. Its sophisticated hotels, picturesque setting, bustling harbor and cosmopolitan town centre are complimented by the range of adventurous activities and cultural experiences on offer around Tahiti. It is a mixture of Polynesian, French, Italian and Chinese influences – a true melting pot of cultures in a South Pacific setting.

But French Polynesia has far more to offer the traveller and it is a shame that fewer less than half Kiwi visitors don’t venture further afield.

Air Tahiti offers approximately 200 flights a week to 47 of the outer islands. There are also cruise ships (large and small) to take you to the more popular islands and charter yachts on prearranged sailings or ready for personalised charters.

Accommodation on the outer islands ranges from equally sophisticated hotels, though smaller, to family hotels and pensions (the Tahitian equivalent of bed 'n breakfast). There are seemingly endless options for adventure, romance, indulgence and relaxation. There is fishing, diving, sailing, surfing, golf, mountain biking, 4x4 tours, hiking, anthropology sites, garden tours, spa treatments, wedding and honeymoon options and marine ecology education programmes.

There are opportunities to swim with the whales or manta rays, feed sharks and stingrays or get up close to dolphins and turtles. Not to mention the pristine beaches, fantastic food and genuinely friendly Tahitians.

There are so many options it seems the ideal destination to custom build an itinerary around your client’s specific interests and budget. The further you go into the outer islands the more you feel the culture and hospitality of the Polynesian side of Tahiti. There are far fewer travellers and it’s more of a raw experience, an adventure – the real French Polynesia.

For me TravelMart was all about discovery, the more I learnt, the more interesting and exciting the options became. I can’t wait to return - on holiday. Annual goodwill mission The sixth annual American Samoa Goodwill Mission, sponsored by the June Jones Foundation, took place from June 13-17. The leader was June Jones, the head football coach of the Southern Methodist University of California. During their visit the mission provided free medical care and supplies, athletic equipment and student fitness programmes. Several former NFL players, including Reno Mahe, Jesse Sapolu and Ma’a Tanuvasa joined Jones for the high school football sessions. The Goodwill Mission also ran a coaching clinic and gave out five US$2000 academic college scholarships.

Samoa Air adds a third service Samoa Air, the newest airline flying into American Samoa, has added a third service to its schedule. The new service from Maoto Airport in Savaii to Pago Pago, Tutuila, will operate three times a week on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

This is in addition to its daily two flights from Fagalii and Faleolo Airports to PPG. The airline generated some publicity recently when it started charging passengers by their weight on a per kilogram basis.

Tradewinds Hotel room renovations American Samoa’s largest hotel, the Tradewinds Hotel, is renovating its 104 suites and rooms, including new fittings, tiled floors, carpets and furniture. There will also be a fresh, new colour scheme throughout.

Work will begin with the eight Plaza Suites, followed by the Deluxe and Twin rooms and will take several months. Meanwhile, Tradewinds’ general manager, Bill Haleck, who is a retired law enforcement officer, has taken up the role of Commissioner for the Department of Public Safety for the American Samoa government.

His replacement is his former assistant general manager, Cathy Haleck, with financial controller Ola Tagaloa taking over her position.

Seafood and show The recently renovated bar Le Café de la Plage and restaurant, Le Parc at the Nouvata Parc Complex is the place to be in Noumea on Friday evenings for the Nouvata Nui Seafood Buffet and Tahitian Dance Show.

The hotel complex, comprising three hotels (Le Pacifique, Le Nouvata and Le Parc) is opposite the beach on Anse Vata Bay. Kay Gregan of New Zealand Travel Brokers’ recently took herself on a famil to Niue and says she became hooked.

While Kay had travelled throughout the Pacific, Niue had eluded her until she took up a ‘TATs” self-famil offer and booked herself and a colleague to spend a week to coincide with a friend’s trip.

“Niue is so very different from other Pacific Islands, both by its make-up and, more importantly, its low key, easygoing nature … no crowds and totally unspoiled.”

Niue wins Trip Advisor accolades Visitors to Niue have been keen to share their experiences on the influential global travel review site Trip Advisor.

The glowing comments have elevated a number of tourism operators on the island to “rave” status and resulted in the accolades being awarded.

Trip Advisor has awarded a Certificate of Excellence to Falala Fa Café and Bar, popular for its freshly prepared sashimi and fish and chips, for the second year in a row’.

From November 4-7, competitors will battle it out for the coveted Rockman and Rockwoman titles during the four-day event. Competitors can opt for Rock-Tri, a gruelling off-road triathlon event, an open ocean swim, a mountain bike challenge or a rock run across eight kilometres of jungle trails.

Competition reeled ‘em in The recent Blackheart Fishing competition held in Niue reeled in a record number of nearly 800kg of fish over the three-day tournament.

Twenty-four Kiwis from all over New Zealand arrived in Niue to target wahoo, mahimahi and tuna and they weren’t disappointed. Close to 800kg of fish was landed during the event.

All Black Frank Bunce hosting one of the many groups who visited the island for the tournament and explored the island’s pleasures.

The overall winner, Brett Henderson from Hamilton, landed 10 fish over the three days and won a return trip for the 2014 event and prizes from sponsors Blackheart and Niue Tourism.

This was Brett’s third tournament and he has already booked for the Rheem/Plumbing World Wahoo International, held in Niue in October.

Paul Pasisi of Niue Charters took out the award for skipper of the tournament. Paul usually runs the largest charter on the Island Horizon. But for this tournament he drew the wildcard boat, which saw him run the fewest lines in the smallest boat, so the win is a credit to his angling skills.

National Mask Festival Kokopo, East New Britain, July 17-21 This is the only festival of its kind in Papua New Guinea brings together tribes from all over the country to showcase their unique and elaborate masks. Each mask’s style forges the cultural identity of a tribe, along with costumes, dances and songs. The performances are unique to the festival and are found nowhere else, making it a special, traditional experience.

Crocodile Festival, East Sepik Province, Wewak, August

Chef leaves the kitchen for a wartime trail Proving that anyone can do it if they put their minds to it, chef and television personality Manu Feildel has completed the Kokoda Track with True Spirit Adventures to raise funds for the children’s charity CanTeen. Feildel trekked the wartime trail over nine days with a group of 20 people to support children living with cancer, raising over $70,000 as a group.

The group began their trek on March 25, with Feildel celebrating his 40th birthday during the challenge amid tropical rainforest and waterfalls, a far cry from the busy kitchens he is used to. To prepare for the strain, Feildel trained intensively for months beforehand with a personal trainer who accompanied him on the trek. Along the way, Feildel swam with locals, waded in waterfalls and photographed the panoramas of the Papua New Guinean wilderness. The Goroka Show, Eastern Highlands, September 13-15 This is one of the most exhilarating displays of culture, music and dance in Papua New Guinea, with over 100 tribes coming together in Goroka for the annual show.

Dressing in brightly coloured feathers and body paint representing their tribe, they perform singsings for visitors of other villages. An iconic image of the show is the Asaro Mudmen from a village not far from Goroka, who wear heavy clay masks with their mud-covered bodies.

Lucky couple find Nemo Cheryl and Mike Smith couldn’t believe their luck when they won a competition from Bride and Groom magazine to have their wedding in Vanuatu. Cheryl had to write about why she wanted to run away to Vanuatu, so she wrote a little poem and sent it off.

“To be honest, I forgot about it until I received a call letting me know I had won!” she said.

The prize included return flights, courtesy of Air Vanuatu, four nights at The Havannah, located about 30 minutes drive from Port Vila (she paid for an upgrade and three more nights), return airport transfers, the ceremony on the jetty at The Havannah, a marriage celebrant, floral arrangements by Island Flowers and champagne for the celebration toast! It also included the services of Samara from the wedding planning company Wedding Parties Evirsamting.

The couple enjoyed some excitement following the wedding, including a fishing trip with Russ from Sportfish Vanuatu.

“We had a brilliant day. Mike caught two wahoo (12kg and 15kg) and I caught a barracuda, of all things … the biggest fish I’ve caught, though. We were extremely lucky, as we were the only ones to catch anything for three days!"

A helicopter ride around Vanuatu is the best way to see the island, says Cheryl. “You see all the reefs so clearly, the Cascade Waterfalls from a different angle and lots of massive turtles. Our pilot, Andy, was brilliant. He took us back around things if we missed seeing them.”

He also showed them the wreck of a plane from the Second World War sitting on a reef on the northeastern coast. They also sailed on the 18m catamaran South Sea Vagabond for some amazing snorkelling in clear water. After lunch they sailed to Lelepa Island and found Nemo and his friends!
