Why are some species so common in nature and others so rare? In this book, I will explore answers to this central question of ecology from the perspective of both evolution and conservation. Our search for rarity will span the most isolated locales in New Guinea and the Amazon, where spectacular natural forms of rarity can be found as well as once common creatures made rare by human activity that live in some of the most altered landscapes on Earth.
