10 (+1) Baby Products
You’ll Actually Use
Stepping into a baby store is a bit like entering a new world; it’s an exciting rite of passage, but the sheer volume of innovation can be a head-scratcher. Between the high-tech wipe warmers and the specialized food steamers, it’s clear that baby stores are packed with clever solutions designed to help. The real challenge isn’t a lack of options—it’s simply figuring out which of these ingenious tools will best fit your unique rhythm as a new parent.
What you really need are a few useful things that make life with a newborn just a little more manageable.
Here are 11 baby essentials you’ll actually use.
1. Easy Swaddles
Swaddling soothes many newborns but wrapping them perfectly in a blanket at 3 am can be frustrating. Choose zip-up
or Velcro swaddles instead—they’re secure, cozy and easy to manage with one hand. They’re also great for grandparents or sleep-deprived partners on night duty.
2. A Comfortable Baby Carrier
A soft wrap or structured baby carrier is worth its weight in gold. It keeps your little one close (and calm), while freeing up your hands for coffee, snacks or just feeling a little more like yourself.
3. Burp Cloths
Burp cloths are the unsung heroes of parenthood. You’ll use them for spit-up, milk dribbles, drool and everything in between. Keep a few in every room, in your car and in your diaper bag. There’s no such thing as too many.
4. A Diaper Bag You Actually Like
You’ll be carrying it everywhere, so make sure it’s functional and something you don’t mind being seen with. Backpack styles are great for comfort, and bags with lots of pockets make organization a breeze. Choose something that’s easy to wipe clean and is durable enough to survive the toddler years.
5. A Portable Changing Station
You don’t need a full nursery setup or expensive changing table. A sturdy changing pad or fold-up portable mat does the trick. Keep a small basket or caddy nearby with diapers, wipes and cream so you can change baby anywhere in the house. This is also a great thing to take with you while you’re out— you never know when and where you’ll have to change your baby. With that in mind, it doesn’t hurt to pop some disinfecting wipes in that new diaper bag as well.
6. Zip-Up Sleepers
You will come to despise snaps and buttons. Invest in zip-up sleepers, ideally the kind that zips up from the bottom for quick diaper changes. Look for soft, breathable materials like organic cotton or bamboo. And remember, darker colours and patterns hide those inevitable baby leaks best.

7. A Nursing Pillow (or Feeding Support Pillow)
Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, a supportive pillow saves your arms and back. It helps position the baby comfortably and makes long feeding sessions easier. Choose one with a removable, washable cover because spills are inevitable.
8. A Baby Bath Support
Having a secure bath insert for the sink or tub makes bath time safer and easier. Pair it with a soft washcloth, gentle baby soap and a towel that’s big enough to wrap all the way around your little one.
9. A Reliable Stroller
Choose a stroller that fits your lifestyle: compact for city living or rugged for trails and park paths. Make sure it folds easily, fits in your trunk and has decent storage underneath. Word of mouth is invaluable here. Ask friends and family members what strollers they have and love (or don’t like so you can steer clear).
10. A Baby Monitor That Fits Your Needs
Some parents want high-tech monitors with cameras, apps and motion and temperature sensors. Others just want a simple audio monitor that lets them hear baby stir. Both are fine, just choose what makes you feel comfortable.
(Bonus items from a mom who’s been there): Good Diaper Cream & Gentle Wipes
You’ll use these two things constantly. Look for unscented, hypoallergenic wipes and a zinc-based diaper cream to prevent rashes. Some parents find that reusable cloth wipes and natural creams work best for sensitive skin. Test a few and see what your baby’s skin likes.
Navigating the vast world of baby gear is an adventure, filled with clever inventions designed to meet every possible parenting need. Ultimately, the best way to shop is to embrace the variety: choose the innovations that spark joy or offer you peace of mind. Enjoy the process of discovering which tools will genuinely make life easier and raising a baby more fun.

For parents, from a parent:
Poison Prevention Tips from an ICU Doctor
Nearly 10,000 poisonings in children five and under were reported to the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre (DPIC) in the Island Health region over five recent years (2019 to 2023). Most poisonings in children happen just before lunch and dinner when children are hungry and least supervised.
Island Health ICU Physician Dr. Daniel Ovakim is raising awareness of poisoning injuries and sharing actions parents and caregivers can take to prevent this from happening in their homes.
“There are many potential poisons in our homes, such as medications, household cleaners, plants and cannabis products,” says Ovakim, who also works as a toxicologist for the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre (DPIC).
“The frustrating part is that most poisonings are preventable.”
Medication
Pain medication is the number one cause of poisonings in the region, with 1,112 incidents reported. Child-resistant packaging is required by law for certain medications, like Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen, but a small percentage of children are still able to open the containers.
“Though bottles are labelled as child-proof, they are childproof for most children, not all children,” Ovakim adds.
Cannabis
While less frequent, poisonings involving cannabis can be very serious. There were 99 incidents reported with half
requiring healthcare. Cannabis edibles can have a more toxic effect than other forms as they can be very potent, and when edibles resemble common snacks like brownies and gummy bears, a young child may not be able to tell the difference.
“Cannabis edibles are becoming more common, especially since legalization, and with packaging that may appeal to kids,” says Ovakim.
“There’s the notion that cannabis is safe but in the doses that are available in edibles and potency we are seeing now, it is definitely not safe for younger kids. We’ve seen children in the ICU on a ventilator after ingesting cannabis products.”
Batteries
Batteries are also to blame for more serious poisonings, causing life-threatening internal chemical burns in as little as two hours. There were 55 poisonings reported and more than half required healthcare. Many of these cases involved small, disc-shaped button batteries, commonly used to power toys, watches, hearing aids and car key fobs.
“As a parent myself, I know how easy it is to get distracted and we can’t always be around, and kids can be very clever,” says Ovakim.
“Being a toxicologist, I am more familiar with the risks, and I have educated my kids in what to watch for and what things to avoid. Teaching our children can go a long way in avoiding poisonings.”
Other Risks
Other common items at home that are known to cause poi sonings in children include alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarette products; household cleaners (like bleach); vitamins; laundry detergent; personal care products like nail polish; car supplies like washer fluid; pesticides; and certain plants.
Poison prevention tips for medication and cannabis:
• Always store medicine or cannabis packages and bottles of pills or syrups locked up high, out of sight and out of reach of children.
• Never refer to medicine as candy.
• Keep products in their original containers to help you remember the type and dose.
• Keep all products in child-resistant packaging.
• When visitors come to your home, keep their belongings out of your child’s reach. And when your children visit others’ homes, such as grandparents, relay these tips to the hosts and keep your eye out for potential risks.

• Avoid using cannabis products and e-cigarettes in front of children. Children often want to do the same things their parents and caregivers do.
Poison prevention tips for batteries:
• Consider whether you can reduce the number of consumer products you bring into your home that use button batteries.
• Ensure the products’ battery compartment is secure and requires a tool like a screwdriver to access the button battery.
• Treat button batteries like any other form of poison and keep them in a locked cabinet out of reach of children. Be sure to secure new batteries in their package, as well as dead batteries since they can still cause a chemical burn.
The BC Poison Control Centre is available 24 hours every day for advice and information.
For suspected poisonings, call 604-682-5050 or 1-800-5678911. If the person loses consciousness or has difficulty breathing, call 911.

An Inside Look at the Books of Island Tweens & Teens
When tweens and teens reach for a book, it’s always a win. But what kinds of books are they reaching for? We asked Vancouver Island booksellers and librarians to share the latest trends in what tweens and teens are reading.
The top of tweens’ reading lists are graphic novels. Whether they are adaptations of popular novels like The Lightning Thief or more realistic stories, booksellers and librarians agree that the mix of visual and written storytelling found in graphic novels captures the attention of this age group. Other hits include animal stories, spy books, adventure, survival fiction and fantasy books—especially with dragons.
Kirsten Larmon, store manager at Munro’s Books, has also seen an uptick of “safe” romances which give tweens an age-appropriate introduction to romance.
Teens are all-in for genre fiction, including horror, mystery, thrillers, fantasy, murder and books that blend multiple genres. Booksellers and librarians agree that the Hunger Games series remains a top choice for teens.
Brooklyn Kemp, library services librarian at Victoria Public Library (VPL), says that representation matters for teens and adds that they look for stories that include queer, gender-diverse and disabled characters.
For books in these age groups, popularity soars when they are adapted to a film or TV series.
Nariel Davis and Sheila Hammond-Todd, children and youth services librarians at Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL), agree that popular TV shows and video games can also impact reading choices, even if they are not adapted from books. Shows like Stranger Things and video games like Five Nights at Freddy’s might be part of the reason for teen’s increased interest in the horror genre.
In addition to film and TV preferences, tweens’ and teens’ hobbies can play a role in the books they pick. Those who like role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons might be drawn to fantasy books, while others with an interest in video games might like stories that feature gaming or reflect the genre of their favourite games.
TikTok can play a role in teens finding a new book. However, Larmon says the biggest influence with teens is what their friends are reading.
“Once a series is a hit at a school, word travels around and everyone wants to read it,” says Larmon.

How can you support the tweens and teens in your life with their reading?
“Young people have many demands on their time, but when books are easy to access and reflect their interests, tweens and teens continue to read, and libraries play an important role in making that possible,” says Kemp.
Both Davis and Hammond-Todd have seen an increase of new library cards for this age group this year—likely due in part to the rise of the cost of living. VIRL and VPL work hard to make inclusive spaces for tweens and teens to feel safe and welcome.
While libraries have lots of great in-person programming and spaces for tweens and teens, Kemp has found that this age group takes advantage of the digital resources such as ebooks and audiobooks offered through Libby as well as the graphic novels, comics and manga available through Hoopla.
Audiobooks are especially popular and “can be a great option for young people who find print challenging, including those with dyslexia or who are neurodivergent,” adds Kemp.
When shopping for books for tweens and teens, there is more to think about than just the book itself.
While it might be convenient to turn to an online retailer, Larmon says there is no substitute for being in a space where you can pick up a book, browse through it, sample the text and see how the feel of it compares to others.

“Among our staff are many adults who once shopped here as children. We know well how special that experience can be for young people.”
There is a thriving scene of independent bookstores across the island with staff who are ready to help.
“We recommend what we love and what we see kids loving,” says Larmon.
Book stores help readers find books they wouldn’t have expected to pick up, but open up their reading worlds.
“My strongest advice to parents and caregivers is not to discourage what young people show interest in when it comes to reading,” says Kemp.
“Audiobooks, comics, video game guides, ‘silly’ stories and books aimed at younger readers are all valid choices.”
This sentiment is echoed by both Davis and Hammond-Todd.
“If you have concerns, ask questions to understand their choice, rather than judge,” says Davis.
“And don’t forget to read yourselves! Children and teens who grow up in houses where they see adults reading grow up to be readers.”
Amy Dechka holds a Master of Publishing from Simon Fraser University. She’s a published writer and currently works in children’s publishing where she gets to champion incredible books that she wishes she had as a child.

Dinner Solutions for the Family on the Go
Busy mom compares 3 meal kit services
You are busy! The last thing you want to do at the end of the day is come home and figure out what’s for dinner, gather the ingredients, go to the store to get anything you don’t have and then prepare and cook the meal.
With kids’ and parents’ full schedules, it’s easy to see why meal kit delivery services have gained popularity in recent years. They provide convenience with delivery to your door, healthier eating with balanced meals, variety and reduced food waste.
My family of four (with children aged 11 and eight) recently tried out three popular and readily available meal kit delivery services to compare which is the most affordable, highest quality and provides the most convenience for our family on the go.
1. Chef’s Plate
Chefs Plate is a meal kit delivery service that provides pre-portioned ingredients and step-by-step instructions. The company aims to simplify meal planning and cooking, offering a variety of recipes and dietary options.
2. HelloFresh
HelloFresh touts themselves as Canada’s number one meal kit delivery service that aims to simplify meal planning and cooking by delivering fresh, pre-portioned ingredients and easy-to-follow recipes to your doorstep.

3. Fresh Prep
Fresh Prep is marketed as a company that delivers everything you need to create meals with quality ingredients fresh to your door. According to their website, the company prides itself on convenience and sustainability.
Price
Let’s get right to the important stuff in this economy—the cost! All these kits have “beginner” discounts that drastically reduce the cost of your first week and in some cases many more. Here, I will compare the regular price of the kits without any discounts. These prices are based on three meals a week for four people. Chef’s Plate: $112.87. Fresh Prep: $155.79. HelloFresh: $148.87

Prep
I must admit that almost all these kits required more prep than I thought they would. They all give a prep time on the recipe sheet, but it often takes more time than it says to prepare them (especially if you have “help” from your kids when making them).
Most require washing the produce, chopping vegetables and herbs, cooking a grain or starch and preparing and cooking the protein. However, the payoff is the fact that you save the time you would take figuring out what meals to make, finding recipes, creating a grocery list and shopping for the items.
Environmental Footprint
One of the biggest complaints about meal kit delivery services is the fact they create a lot of waste. Between the cardboard box the meals come in, the bags each meal is packaged in and all the items in individual packages, there is a lot of garbage.
Fresh Prep delivers in reusable cooler bags, and most of the items come in a Zero Waste Kit (a cooler with washable and reusable compartments that hold the food). This is a great option with less
waste, but it means you must wash the kit and remember to put the cooler on your step in time for your next drop off.
Ingredients

mind of knowing what’s for dinner when you get home at the end of a long day. In short, less time planning, shopping for and prepping dinner means more quality time spent with our kids.
