‘Resource-full’ Parenting

J

ust like the changing seasons, this issue marks a transition at Island Parent. This month we bid farewell to former owner and publisher Mark Warner, who since 2014, has overseen the smooth running of Island Parent Magazine, the annual Family Summer Guide, Family Resource Guide, Vancouver Island Kids’ Guide, Island Parent Teens, and the now twice-yearly Island Grandparent. We thank Mark for his contribution to the magazine. We will miss him and wish him well in his future endeavours. Also with this issue, we are pleased to welcome the Schneider family—Ellice and Jim—as the new owners and publisher of Island Parent. Together they bring a wealth of experience in not only the parenting community—they are the parents of two sons, Josh, 11, and Jacob, 10—but also in the media, marketing, and human resources fields. They share a passion for their community, for giving back, and they are committed to helping create an inclusive, supportive and vibrant place for Vancouver Island families to raise their children—which is also a big part of Island Parent’s mission. To that end, in this year’s Family Resource Guide you’ll find resources for new parents along with information on family support, education, classes and programs, health and wellness, legal and financial services, family fun and entertainment, party planning, retail products, family restaurants and food markets, overnight camps and family travel. There are articles on topics including the importance of connecting with nature, treating ourselves with kindness, how to lessen mealtime stress, the realities of new motherhood, encouraging kids to read, and on teaching accountability. Need tips on adopting a puppy? Read Getting a Dog for suggestions. And for listings on birthday party ideas and things to do, check out the Party Directory and the calendar of Annual Family Events. We hope the listings, articles and resources in this guide—along with Island Parent’s monthly magazine—help you in your job raising healthy, happy kids. Keep this issue on hand so you can refer to it throughout the year. And for a comprehensive list of where you can pick up a free copy of Island Parent every month, visit islandparent.ca and click at the top of the home page “Where to Pick-Up a Copy.” Here’s to “resource-full” parenting.

ver feel like you’re trapped in a parenting dramedy? If so, you’re certainly not alone. From diaper explosions and first smiles to hurt feelings and (so many) sleepless nights, parenting is an emotional rollercoaster that never seems to stop. Just ask Nicolle Nattrass, who decided to chronicle the highs and lows of later-in-life parenting in her solo show, Mamahood: Bursting Into Light. “As a playwright-performer, I don’t like to be bound by restrictions like ‘comedy’ or ‘drama,’” explains the Lantzville-based Nattrass. “I really believe life is full of both, so I’ve always written to connect with the audience, using comedy to be able to talk about the more serious things.” Running October 10 to 20 as the annual Spotlight on Alumni at UVic’s Phoenix Theatre, Mamahood is directed by fellow Phoenix grad and famed monologist TJ Dawe, and offers Nattrass’ hilarious and heartbreaking chronicle of having her first child later in life. “The core message is that motherhood is a rock ’n’ roll ride,” she laughs. “We’re told parenting should look like a Pamper’s commercial—all the right outfits, everything is good—but that excludes a lot of moms. It’s really an individual experience: the only one who can define how you’re going to be as a mother is you. And it’s okay to not have an ideal experience every day of the week…or at all. Whether you’re a co-parent, step-parent or foster parent, it’s all about accepting your own story.” Not that Mamahood is only for mothers. “The biggest surprise to me are the men’s reactions,” says Nattrass of her audiences that frequently include partners, grandparents, teenagers, doctors, midwives, nurses, doulas and ‘dudelas’. “The director isn’t a dad, and a lot of men who come to the show aren’t dads, but they’ve all been so supportive.” Nor is the play only for laughs. “I’ve had people come out who are dealing with issues other than parenting—like anxiety and depression—and they can really relate to the show, because it’s funny but it’s also talking about serious issues.” And it’s this serious twist that sets Mamahood apart from other mom-centric comedies, as Nattrass doesn’t shy away from

dealing with the realities of the postpartum experience. “I went through postpartum anxiety, but there’s still a lot of stigma around that,” she explains. “The postpartum experience can be anything from anxiety, fear and sleep deprivation to issues surrounding the pregnancy or birth itself. It wasn’t until after I’d given birth that I learned Post Partum Traumatic Stress Disorder even existed; it’s not something we’re talking about.” Born and raised in Victoria, Paula is a REALTOR with a long, successful family background in the industry. She has the experience, energy and enthusiasm necessary to assist you with all your Real Estate needs across the South Island.

John Threlfall

Paula Wensley

With that in mind, Nattrass always tries to connect with local family and birth educators and support networks wherever Mamahood plays—in Victoria, she’s working with Mothering Touch Centre—and builds that into the theatrical experience. “I always do a talkback session at the end of each show, so people can not only ask me questions but also connect with resources in their community. That’s really important to me as an artist.” Ultimately, Mamahood, one of nine plays Nattrass has written, is a comedic story about her own journey—so far. Now that her own son is nine, she realizes there’s more material to be mined from the parenting experience. “And I haven’t even gotten to the teen years yet!” she laughs. “The process of being a mom to my son is so powerful that I wanted to start documenting certain moments, what I was thinking or what he did. My whole journey really has been about bursting into light.” Mamahood: Bursting into Light runs from October 10–20 at UVic’s Phoenix Theatre. Tickets are $16-$26, available at 250-7218000 or phoenixtheatres.ca.

John Threlfall is a busy local writer and father of two teens. In addition to being the communications officer for UVic’s Faculty of Fine Arts, he also co-hosts the local arts podcast Check The Program.

eading is an important part of your child’s overall health and well-being. Children who don’t learn to read well may have emotional and behavioural problems later in life. The skills your child learns early in life will help him well into adulthood. You can help your child develop good reading skills with the following suggestions. • Make reading part of every day. Even just a few minutes will make a difference. It’s also a great way to create a special bond by spending time with your child. • Continue to read out loud to your child even when he can read alone. • Read books that are a bit above your child’s reading level, as long as they are books that he can still understand and enjoy.

Read with your children.

Use rhymes, games and songs.

Singing traditional songs and telling stories can all enhance your child’s learning opportunities. This can also be a great way to expose your child to other languages.

Ask the experts for help.

Teachers and librarians are good sources of advice for books that are right for your child’s age and reading level. Bookstore staff can be helpful too.

Children who are learning to read need Visit the library, and create one to practice. If your child is doing well, at home. regular reading at home is a chance for her Get your child a library card as soon as to show off. If your child is having trouble, you can (even babies can get a library card!) it provides a safe place to practice with Make library visits part of your routine. If someone she trusts. there are more books than toys in the house, your child is more likely to pick up a book when there’s nothing to do. Be a role model. Your children should see you enjoying reading. If he sees you and other family Limit screen time. members reading books, newspapers, and Create time for reading by limiting the magazines, he’ll learn that reading is im- amount of time your child spends watching portant, fun and valuable. television or playing computer and video Consider creating a special reading place games. in your home that is quiet and cozy. Keep books close to this area.

Give your child some control over who reads and when.

It’s important to support your child if he decides to take on a longer book. Take turns reading, perhaps alternating paragraphs or pages. Or you can “act out” the story—your child can read the dialogue, and you can narrate by reading the rest of the text.

Give your child a choice of books.

Present a few books that are the right type and length for your child, and let him choose. If you don’t present a few options, he may not make good choices. Children might choose the biggest (or smallest) book, or the one with the most attractive cover. Students who are behind in their reading level may not want to be seen with a book that is “babyish,” so they may choose books that are too hard for them. And sometimes books for older students with low reading levels may be boring. A good strategy is to say, “You choose one, I choose one.”

Practice writing.

Reading and writing go together. Children can practice their writing skills by making lists, keeping a journal, making a catalogue of their collections, or writing to friends and family, including emailing and texting (with parent supervision).

If your child is an impatient reader, choose books that have movement.

Books with short chapters or “cliffhangers” encourage children to keep reading. Use sound effects and different voices to help keep the story interesting.

Opportunities to read are everywhere.

Encourage your child to read street signs, the back of the cereal box, or the sports pages of the daily newspaper. Your child might also enjoy reading non-fiction or comic books. Recipes help children learn to read for detail—leaving out just one ingredient can lead to disaster! Time on the Internet can also involve reading, but it is a good idea to always supervise time spent online.

No More S’mores

C

amping was a central part of my family’s summers as I grew up in 1960s and 1970s England. My parents would load up the car with our big, blue, insanely heavy canvas tent, along with all our other camping paraphernalia. Then we’d set off on a tortuously long journey from the midlands of England up to the northwest coast of Scotland, to places like

Ullapool or Lochinver, on increasingly narrow and precarious roads. We’d find a spot to pitch our tent, hang out for a couple of days exploring the area, then head off to find another spectacular spot to call home for a couple of nights. It was heaven, and those summers were when I caught the camping bug and a lifelong love of nature. Fast forward to more recent times and my daughters have caught the bug too, camping every summer since they were infants. One of their very favourite activities is roasting marshmallows over a crackling campfire to make s’mores. After long days exploring hiking trails, swimming in lakes or just soaking up the sun, the ritual of roasting marshmallows now seems carved into our family’s DNA. The sharpening of sticks to spear the marshmallows, the passionate competition to achieve that elusive evenly brown, perfectly roasted masterpiece, even the

arguments as they are told they must stop or they will never sleep—all these make a summer’s evening complete wherever we camp. Yet we seem to be practicing this ritual less and less with each passing summer. All too often, there are campfire bans in place, even here on the coast. The bans have been starting earlier in the season, and tend to

be in place longer and to cover more of the province. The landscapes we camp in are increasingly parched and have become tinderboxes primed to burn, whether because of a lightning strike, a carelessly thrown cigarette—or a stray spark from a campfire. Nowadays, when forests burn, they often burn with an intensity firefighters say they have never seen before. The provincial government declared states of emergency due to wildfires in both 2017 and 2018. The 2017 wildfire season obliterated records for area burned, people displaced and cost to suppress. The state of emergency lasted 10 weeks, the longest in B.C. history. Before the end of August, 2018 had already surpassed the number of hectares burned in 2017. The smoke that blanketed much of our province this summer meant many kids couldn’t even play outside. And we know that the very young and the very old are most

Tim Pearson with danger and threats, our kids will not learn to love nature. And who will fight to protect something to which they have no connection? I’m pretty convinced no champion of the environment was ever made playing Minecraft or obsessively maintaining their SnapChat streaks late into the night. Looming over all of this is global warming, driving radical changes all over our planet. I was born in 1962, when global CO2 concentrations were 321 parts per million. My oldest daughter was born in 2002, by which the average had risen to 375 ppm. My youngest at 385. Last year it was 409. This year peaked at 412. But 350 or lower is where we need to be. Campfire bans will be the least of our worries as climate impacts accelerate. One of the reasons I work at Sierra Club BC is to help secure a better future for my daughters. Some days, I confess, it feels hopeless. Other days, I feel optimistic that we can overcome even this most daunting of challenges. One cause for optimism is that wildfires are finally starting to force more widespread conversations about climate change and the need for action. I believe we should be using these opportunities to talk to our kids about our planet, their future in it and what they can do to assert some measure of control over their destinies. Today’s children will be tomorrow’s leaders—and we are going to need strong, principled, determined leaders to build resilience in our communities and make the transition to a post-carbon world that respects our planet’s limits. Because this is really at the heart of it for me: I want to share the joy of roasting marshmallows with my grandchildren someday. Tim Pearson is Communications Director for Sierra Club BC.

Give Yourself a

BREAK W

hy do we always beat ourselves up when we make mistakes? Are we afraid of judgment? Weighed down by the drive for perfection? Our inner voices seem to be so critical. I know mine is! When I am overwhelmed by my busy schedule, I fall into a pattern of self-chastising. My house is messy. My kids have eaten scrambled eggs for dinner two nights in a row. I don’t play with my kids enough. I lost my temper. I can keep going, but the list becomes tedious and boring.

If we are going to change our attitudes towards making mistakes and experiencing failure, we need to give ourselves a break! We need to create some room to be imperfect. If mistakes are met with selfcriticism, it becomes the breeding ground for fear of failure.

Kelly Cleeve When faced with difficult life situations, or when confronting mistakes, try responding with kindness towards yourself rather than with self-criticism and self-judgement. Self-compassion recognizes that mistakes are normal and that imperfection is what makes us human. Self-compassion can simply be defined as treating yourself with the same love, kindness and concern that you would show a friend. As human beings, and especially creatures of the Western culture, we tend to show more compassion to others than we do to ourselves. Compassion is something we easily extend to our friends, children, families and colleagues. We reassure them that everything will be okay. We tell them that a mistake can be repaired. We soothe them and try to ease their pain. Why don’t we do this for ourselves? In order to increase our own resilience, we should take this same attitude and turn it inwards. Self-compassion can be broken down into three separate traits: self-kindness, shared humanity and mindfulness. When life presents a challenge, one’s inner dialogue can make a profound difference. When practicing self-kindness, we are gentle and encouraging. We self-affirm and remind ourselves that we are doing the best that we can in a difficult situation. When we are kind to ourselves, we forgive our shortcomings and remember that no one expects us to be perfect. It is important that we recognize that failure is a common experience for all humans. Everyone makes mistakes. Bad things happen to the best of us. Disappointment is normal and a part of our shared humanity. Sometimes we get stuck in the “Why me?” mentality. At that moment, we need to broaden our perspective and remember that everyone experiences

adversity. Take comfort in the fact that you are not alone in your failure or your challenge. It can be helpful to reach out to others in these moments, seeking empathy, looking for comfort or asking for advice. Self-compassion and recognizing shared humanity combats the feeling of isolation that failure may bring. When we acknowledge the struggle of others, it becomes easier to take responsibility for our own actions and to plan for restorative action.

Mindfulness is the ability to be in the moment, aware of one’s own thoughts and emotions, both positive and negative. To be self-compassionate does not mean that we repress or ignore negative feelings. By definition, compassion cannot be practiced without the acknowledgment of pain and suffering. Mindfulness encourages us to recognize negative feelings and circumstances and to look at it without judgement. Sometimes, we can become so focused on problem solving that we forget to consider our emotions. When one is being mindful, they are able to acknowledge a challenge and the way it makes them feel. However, we must not ruminate in negativity, but simply feel it, show compassion to ourselves and then develop a plan to move on or improve the situation, if we can.

As parents, we can be exceptionally hard on ourselves, yet it is important to remember that little ears are always listening and little eyes are always watching. How we treat ourselves sets an example for our children. If we self-chastise, our children may find this behaviour normal and begin to lack forgiveness for their own errors. Teaching self-compassion to children can have wonderful benefits. Aside from preventing fear of failure, self-compassion is directly linked to one’s level of selfesteem. Very often, people measure their own self-worth in terms of appearance, performance and social approval. These measures, however, can be unstable. What happens to our self-esteem when we fail? People who are self-compassionate tend to have an increased level of self-esteem, for they are able to separate the action of failure from the quality of who they are as a person. Mistakes and challenge are merely a circumstance and does not define who we are. Along with a higher level of self-esteem, self-compassionate people can be happier, more optimistic and have an increased life satisfaction, perceived confidence and motivation. They have a healthier physiological response to stress and a reduced rate of negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, rumination, shame, perfectionism and fear of failure. People who practice self-compassion lack selfcriticism, for perceived weakness is less threatening and they are aware enough to recognize and manipulate a negative mindset. Don’t we want this for ourselves and for our children? When you make a mistake, as inevitably you will, remember to be kind. Failure is very rarely catastrophic, more often coming in the form a momentary setback. Acknowledge your feelings and practice self-care. Do a yoga class. Go for a run. Talk about it with a friend, over coffee. Show kindness and forgiveness to yourself and then carry on. If you struggle to practice self-compassion for the sake of your own well-being, then do it for your children. They may not thank you, but they will grow up learning to be kind to others as well as to themselves.

Kelly Cleeve is a passionate educator with 14 years experience. She is a graduate student at the University of British Columbia, a wife and a mother of two beautiful boys.

Such a small word for such a big feeling. If we are lucky, family sustains us, lifts us up, protects us, and yes, sometimes makes us just a little crazy. As you read this, there are over 1,000 children and youth in care on Vancouver Island who are temporarily unable to live with their family. Can you share your family with a child who needs a safe place to be while they and their family heal and become strong again? Maybe fostering is something you’ve never thought about. Maybe it’s something you’ve thought about for a long time. It begins with a phone call. Foster Parent Support Services Society

How to Lessen Mealtime Stress …and prepare healthy meals

D

o you experience meal-time stress? Does it feel like you are constantly running around trying to prepare everything for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, only to end up resorting to packaged meals more often than you’d like? Time often feels rushed with kids, especially when there are activities to get to, homework to finish, and bedtimes to uphold. Panic and stress around meal-prep is not inevitable, though—even with all of the demands of family life. There are tips and strategies you can incorporate to help calm the chaos and bring more peace to your daily life through preparation, planning and short-cuts.

Meal Prep

1. Pick a day and time to plan meals for the week. For example, Saturday afternoon. Get the family involved and allow your children to select at least one healthy meal option for the week. 2. Make a larger serving of grain so a dinner meal can be transformed into a salad or breakfast for the next day. 3. Make a list of healthy meals you can make in 30 minutes for when you have limited time. Some examples: • whole grain pasta with chickpeas, tuna or canned salmon and vegetables • quinoa stir-fry with tofu, chicken, eggs or a peanut sauce • bean tacos

Grocery Shopping:

1. If you have young children, try to choose a store with a fun cart for them to sit in, child carts they can push around, or get them involved in finding or picking out items to put into the cart. Or have one parent do the shopping alone. 2. Make grocery shopping easy and fast by ordering groceries online and having them delivered, or ready for pick-up at the store. 3. Press the easy button and purchase prepared salad greens or pre-cut veggies to help speed up food prep. It is worth the extra cost if this removes some stress or enables you to incorporate salads and veggies in your diet. Plus, it may even save you money, if this helps you to bring your lunch rather than eating out or purchasing pre-made meals.

Breakfasts:

1. Plan your breakfasts so you don’t have to think about what to make or have each day. For example: • Monday: oatmeal with fruit and nuts • Tuesday: eggs scrambled with veggies on wholegrain toast • Wednesday: seed pudding (chia, hemp, flax) with dried fruit and/or blueberries, and non-dairy milk • Thursday: smoothie with wholegrain toast and nut butter • Friday: yogurt bowl with fruit, nuts and seeds or quinoa porridge with fruit and nuts/seeds

2. Marinate and cook chicken breasts or tofu to use for several lunches: add to salads, wraps, or rice/quinoa bowls. 3. Get your kids to help pack and plan their lunches. Involve them in food prep and give them a few healthy options for what to include in their lunch.

• Ideas: Grocery store deli and salad bar, brown rice sushi, wholegrain pizza, make brown rice or quinoa at home and pick up a thai meal, Indian curry, or other Asian dish. 6. Schedule kitchen clean-up duty, so everyone is involved in cleaning the kitchen and doing the dishes. And finally, when it all starts to feel like too much, take a moment to de-stress and Dinner: 1. Look up recipes for slow-cooker meals relax. It only takes a few minutes to feel more that cook while you work so you come relaxed and focused on the tasks at hand. • Do a few deep breathing exercises: home to a ready-made dinner. 2. Make a large batch of soup, stew, or breathe in for five seconds, hold for two to chili on Sunday so you have leftovers for three seconds, and let out for seven seconds. Use this as a menu of options: try what several days or freeze for a quick meal on appeals to you – and try one thing at a time, a busy day. 3. Get kids involved in meal prep; they so you can accomplish it, and then layer on can wash and cut up veggies, mix ingredients more ideas, if you want. Happy planning and prepping, and for patties/burgers, scramble eggs, or mix may you be more relaxed and organized dough for a tart. 4. Prep a portion of the meal the night than ever. before. For example, cut-up veggies for a stir-fry, make a dressing or sauce, mix patty/ Sonja Yli-Kahila is a mom of two young girls, burger ingredients in a bowl, or make dough and a Certified Health Coach and Nutritionist for a pot-pie, quiche or tart. at Rejuvenize Health Coaching and Nutrition. 5. Choose one day a week when you Sonja@Rejuvenizehealthcoaching.com. don’t make dinner and opt for a healthy take-out or prepared meal you can pick up on your way home.

2. Make a large batch of muffins or healthy granola on the weekend for an easy, quick option for breakfast in the morning. 3. Try overnight oatmeal: mix together oats, water, sweetener, dried fruit or berries, nuts, and a pinch of salt and leave overnight. It can be eaten as-is in the morning, or quickly warmed in the microwave for a cooked version.

Lunch:

1. Do meal prep on Sunday for lunches during the week: • Cut up vegetables for snacks. • Cook a large batch of rice, quinoa or other grain (for example, kamut, oat groats) to make into salads for the week. • Pack green salads into several containers for the week. • Add greens, shredded carrot and beets, zucchini cubes, seeds (hemp, sunflower, pumpkin). • The day before you plan to eat the salad, add: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and protein: beans, chickpeas, tofu, tuna, salmon, chicken, beef. (Add your dressing in the morning or bring in a separate container. )

Trying to Stay Present I f there’s one thing I’ve struggled with recently in regards to parenting, it’s making sure I’m present for my kids. Like many dads, I work a lot. I’m gone all day and work most evenings, so that brief window I get during dinnertime is a special one for my kids and me. Unfortunately, the allure of quickly checking my phone’s notifications pulls me in way more than it should during those hours. I try to avoid it; my kids don’t need to see me doing that, and we have a pretty strict policy on screen time for them so I don’t want them thinking the screen is so great I can’t stay away from it for 10 minutes. But, admittedly, it’s hard. Still, I’m trying, really trying, because, you know what? They’re getting older. My daughter recently turned 10. Double digits! The boy is 7. It goes fast; why waste a single second not being present when I’m with them? When we became parents, my wife and I made a decision to be, well, you know, parents: she stays at home during the week to be a parent, to be a mom. My part of that deal should include not sneaking peeks at my email at 6 p.m. just in case some important work email has come in. It can wait a couple hours. Things can always wait a couple hours. But that’s the hard part, and it seems like it’s especially hard for workaholic dads. I know, because I am one. One of my kids made a comment recently that stung so much I kinda immediately put it out of my memory, or at least tried to. The exact words elude me, but the kid made a comment about how I was always checking my phone when I was with them. Man, did that sting. They didn’t seem hurt, though, and that almost stung more. They just said it as if it was normal, as if that’s what dads do. That was a wakeup call. It’s not always easy being a dad, and sometimes you kinda want to check out for a minute. But aside from the general mentalhealth concerns of constantly checking into social media and seeing what new notifica-

tions await you on your phone—there’s another option here: take a deep breath, and, well, don’t check out. Think of it this way: your kid will only be, say, 9 years, 3 months, and 4 days old once. Don’t miss a second of it.

Greg Pratt I was at the park the other day with the kids. I was totally exhausted. I was grumpy, and dealing with attitude, and generally hating it. I was sitting on a bench while they played at the playground when I realized I had forgotten my phone. Like all ridiculous human beings in 2018, I never forget my phone. Putting aside the weird feelings of nakedness I experienced for a minute, I then felt more grumpiness because I wanted to check out. I wanted to waste some of my precious little time with my kids (and my precious little data on my plan) at the park to check email, here on a sunny Saturday afternoon with my kids, who will never be the age they were at that day again. It took me a moment, but I became glad I didn’t have my phone. I forced my bad mood away, shook my frown off my face, stood up and walked over to those huge spinning top things that always make you feel like you’re trying to push them through quicksand, and I spun the hell out of my kids, their faces lighting up with mine. And when I got home, I snuck a peek at the notifications on my phone. None of them mattered. I think I’ll leave it at home next time, too.

Greg Pratt is the father of two children and a local journalist and editor. His writing has appeared in, among other places, Today’s Parent, Wired, Revolver and Douglas.

Pumpkin Pie

W

e seldom think of the pumpkin for more than carving goofy faces and baking pie. However, it is a delicious vegetable that can be added to soups, stews, or sautĂŠed with garlic. Here are a few recipes that will hopefully inspire you to make pumpkins a fun part of your fall celebrations.

Pumpkin Purée

Homemade pumpkin purée is easy to make. It also tastes so much better than canned purée. I always make a large bunch of pumpkin purée at once, then freeze the leftovers. Freeze larger portions of pumpkin purée in plastic containers. Small, portions of purée can be frozen in an ice cube tray, then stored in a Ziplock bag for pumpkin steamers.

Emillie Parrish The trick to really good pumpkin purée is to not use a large carving pumpkin. They are grown to be carved, so the flesh is watery and doesn’t have much flavour. Either get a small sugar pumpkin or a kabocha squash. Kabocha squash makes excellent pumpkin purée. It has a nice rich flavour that is perfect for pumpkin dishes. 1. Preheat the oven to 325˚F. 2. Cut the pumpkin in half from the stem to the base. 3. Scoop out the seeds and save for making sweet and spicy pumpkin seeds (see recipe below). 4. Cover in aluminum foil, and bake foil side up for about 1 hour. You want the pumpkin to be really soft. 5. Take out of the oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes. 6. Scrape the meat from the skin and put it into a blender. Pulse to purée. 7. Use right away or freeze for future use.

1. Preheat oven to 250˚F. 2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Remove any remaining bits of flesh from seeds. Rinse the seeds, then spread them out on the parchment in an even layer. 4. Bake until dry, about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. 5. Let cool. 6. Combine sugar, salt, cumin, cinnamon, ginger and cayenne. 7. Heat the oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Add pumpkin seeds and coat with oil. Then add in the sugarspice mix. Cook until sugar melts, about 45 to 60 seconds. 8. Remove from heat and dump into a bowl, continuing to stir until the pumpkin seeds are well coated. 9. Allow to cool before eating. They will stay fresh in an air-tight container for about 1 week.

that the cold milk doesn’t cause the butter to clump. 3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir to combine. You want to make sure there aren’t any large clumps, but you don’t want to over mix. 4. Preheat your frying pan on medium. If you are not using a non-stick frying pan, then add a little butter to the pan before you cook your pancakes. 5. Scoop about 1⁄3 cup of batter onto the frying pan. 6. Make your face on the pancake, while the first side cooks. Flip your pancake when the centre of the pancake is bubbly and the sides have started to dry out (about 2 minutes). 7. Cook the second side for another 2 minutes. 8. Serve face side up.

bigger problems than I’m ready to address in this article. Similarly, dogs don’t teach responsibility—that would be the parents or grandparents when they tell the child to go out

Getting a Dog

I

’ve been spending a little time lately trying to understand why, about a month ago, I agreed to buy a puppy for my granddaughter. The new addition to our extended family came after months of insidious lobbying by both my granddaughter and my daughter. They were relentless, utilizing shameful tactics like texting me a parade of puppy photos and Puppies for Sale ads at every hour of the day. I resisted for a long time, recognizing that buying my granddaughter a dog meant that I, too, had bought a dog. Now don’t get me wrong, I love dogs. For 16 years, as my own children were growing up, Murphy the Wonder Dog graced our home. Murphy was a border collie and, as such, arguably smarter than most of the people I knew. He was also an embodiment of that famous Henry Wheeler Shaw quote that “a dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.” I suppose the experience of growing up with a pet had inspired my daughter to offer the same experience to her own child, but her early attempts at introducing less demanding pets in the shape of gerbils (or hamsters— I can’t tell the difference between rodents) had been a dismal failure. Let’s face it, gerbils, fish, and other so-called pets in the same genre are, in fact, just living exhibits that some people keep in their home. A true pet has to want to lick your hand, curl up at your feet and share life experiences with the same exuberance or sorrow that you do. Finally, after almost a year of being hounded, no pun intended, to get a dog, and watching the latest in a line of faux pets hit the garbage, I relented. Enter Bailey. Like Murphy, Bailey is a border collie, although he has about 25 per cent rough collie in him that the family doesn’t like to talk about. (That 25 per cent gives his coat a permanently unkempt appearance and, I believe, may have had a deleterious affect on his IQ.) The mixed breed status means that, while the rough collie in him may inspire him to get help if I ever fall in a well—Lassie, after

all, was a rough collie—his border collie genes would kick in half-way to summoning help. He would, I suspect, forget all about me and spontaneously start herding sheep. Or children. Or anything else that looked in need of herding. Best I never fall in a well. Suffice to say that, at five months of age, Bailey is a handful. Although my daughter and granddaughter both promised to share the workload that a dog entails, the truth is that it’s me who finds himself out in the rain at 3 a.m. when Bailey decides he is in desperate need of a walk. It’s my furniture he chews up and, as I sit in my home office, I’m the one who is distracted from my work by this fuzzball wanting to play tug-of-war with his ratty pull toy.

So why did I get a dog? Why should any parent or grandparent get a dog for the children in their care? Look to the fount of all knowledge, the internet, and you’ll find a plethora of websites with features entitled “five good reasons to get your child a dog” or “15 reasons why you should get your kid a dog.” I’ve read a host of these postings and, having had a dog, can tell you that most of what I read was nonsense. For example, while dogs might actually help boost a child’s immune system, if this is your motivator to get a dog, you have

Tim Collins and pick up the poop in the yard. The dog really doesn’t give a hoot. It’s like saying that beds teach responsibility because you tell the child to make their bed in the morning. Another favourite bit of nonsense is that dogs keep children active and fit. Tell that to the overweight child who sits playing video games while the family dog waits patiently by their side, hoping for a potato chip to fall off the bed. Other articles credit dogs with everything from helping with speech development, improved social skills, offering protection, increasing cognitive abilities, increased motor skills as they groom the dog. Well, you get the picture. The truth is that all of these reasons are true to some degree, but they aren’t likely the reason you get a dog for your child. You get a dog because a dog won’t abandon your child in tough times, they won’t hit, belittle, tease or fight with your child. They won’t criticize them or let their own problems interfere with an expression of affection at every opportunity. They become more than a pet; they become a loving friend that will listen patiently to a child’s fears, secrets and troubles. And they’ll never be too tired to play. As I write this piece, my granddaughter Randi is sitting on the couch watching one of her favourite programs on my TV. Bailey is cuddled up beside her, rendering no judgment on the insipid dialogue or the hackneyed plot line. Randi is unconsciously stroking Bailey’s unruly coat and probably doesn’t care that she might be improving her motor skills or that her immune system might be getting stronger. All she knows is that she has a new friend, and maybe that’s enough. Tim Collins is a writer and freelance journalist living and working in Victoria.

Curling Up With the Classics

A

utumn always feels like a great time of year to cozy up underneath thick quilts with a cup of hot apple cider to re-read classics and favourite poems. This year is no different. However, if you’re worried that some of the books you treasure aren’t for a young enough readership or filled with enough pictures to satisfy and entertain your child, here are a few suitable remakes. There’s the quintessential Canadian tale, Anne of Green Gables, as well as a few stories about the lives of Mary Shelley and Mary Elizabeth Sawyer for you to check out and enjoy. Two books by Kallie George were inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s story of a happy red-headed girl back East. The first one is Goodnight, Anne (Tundra, 2018), which is reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon. Like the child in Brown’s book, Anne with an “e” is refusing to settle down to sleep until she gets to say “Goodnight to all of my kindred spirits. And goodnight, Green Gables.” Not even bullies or the stars get forgotten in her goodnight biddings. Goodnight, Anne is filled with gorgeous illustrations by Geneviève Godbout. These soft pictures are filled deep blues and dark reds that make it seem as though you are peaking in on your own child after they have been tucked into bed in the semi-darkness of twilight. For ages 0 to 3. If your child is older than three and ready to start reading their own chapter books, but you still think they would love to learn about Anne, then you should look at the second book by George, Anne Arrives (Tundra, 2018). This book, which is illustrated by Abigail Halpin, is the first in a series of chapter books that recreates L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables for younger readers. The story begins with Anne’s arrival at Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert’s home in Green Gables. Because the brother and sister had actually wanted to adopt an orphan boy to help them on the farm, it doesn’t look like Anne will be there long. The delightful pictures help bring the character’s emotions and all of Green Gables to life as Anne learns what it means to be accepted into the Cuthberts’ home and hearts. For ages 6 to 8.

If you and your child prefer ghost stories then you might want to curl up with Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein (Tundra, 2018). By Linda Bailey and illustrated by Júlia Sardà, this story is best enjoyed “on a dreary night,” when the wind is howling and the rain is thrumming down on your roof and pattering off the window panes. This narrative biography begins with Mary as she walks along a stormy, smoky street and her special name for daydreams: “castles in the air.” Then Bailey takes you through Mary’s early years including her favourite place to daydream—her mother’s grave, as well as what created a love of ghost stories in her and the adventures she went on that helped inspire her to write Frankenstein when she was only 18. The dark and creepy images of monsters swirling and fighting in the clouds by Sardà bring in the feeling of ghost stories even though this one isn’t a ghost story at all. For ages 5 to 8. Unlike Mary Shelley, Mary Elizabeth Sawyer didn’t write a story that became famous. She took care of a sick little lamb. In Mary and her Little Lamb: The True Story of the Famous Nursery Rhyme, author Will Moses turns the true story of young Mary into an illustrated children’s book. The beautifully detailed pictures help tell the story of how Mary found a sick, small lamb that was rejected by its mother in her family’s barn. Saddened, she decided to bring it in the house and care for it herself. Once the lamb was well, it did end up following her to school one day. For ages 5 to 8. Another classic story that you may enjoy sharing with your children is The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and illustrated by David Peterson (IDW, 2016). While the story is from 1908, Peterson reimagined it with brand new illustrations and the timeless story was reprinted in 2016. The stunningly detailed images are reminiscent of those found in Brian Jacques Redwall series, which is where Peterson got some of his inspiration. If you loved reading about Mole, Rats and Toad and their adventures and mishaps when you were a child then this is a great edition to share with your children. For ages 7 and up.

If all of these tales have rekindled your imagination and desire to turn your own “castles in the air” in to stories or poems to share then Juan Felipe Herrera, who was the Poet Laureate of the United States from 2015 to 2017, has some tips for you in his book Jabberwalking (Candlewick Press, 2018). In this book, which takes its name

Christina Van Starkenburg

from Lewis Carroll’s poem Jabberwocky, Herrera teaches his readers the art of jabberwalking, that is, the art of quickly writing down every thought you think or sound you hear as you walk down the street. From this haphazard stream of consciousness that you have spewed over your page, Herrera shows his readers how to pick out words and phrases you can see and turn them into poetic art or “burbles.” The way Herrera writes leaves you constantly chasing him down the street after his dog Lotus, so if you have boundless energy and fancy yourself to be an expert multitasker then this book is an exciting challenge for you. It is non-stop poetic madness, and if you hang on until the very end you will be left with at least one burble that would make any champion Jabberwalker proud. For ages 10 and up.

Accountability A ccountability. Such an important part of a person’s character. Many people in the workplace can’t succeed because they are unable to be accountable and take corrective feedback. This comes from self-esteem struggles and the mistaken belief that you don’t have value if you don’t do things perfectly or make a mistake. When this happens, it is hard to be vulnerable and to see that you may have

messed up in some way and even harder to be open to learning. Instead, people get defensive or worse yet, throw the blame ball and deny responsibility all together. This stops growth and interferes with relationships. As parents, it is up to us to create an atmosphere of accountability. We don’t do this by teaching,

lecturing and moralizing. “You should learn to take responsibility for your actions! When I was young, I never talked back.” Talking like this will only create resentment in your kids and they will interpret that they are bad or useless. As they get older, they will see that you have a little, shall we say, hot air. Another problem is overdoing praise and putting kids on a pedestal. Their self-esteem vacillates from grandiosity to shame. Healthy self-esteem means that we are no better than or worse than. We all have gifts and challenges! What to do: It’s important to be neutral and descriptive with feedback without gushing or criticizing. Simply state what you see and keep the judgment of your child’s character out of it. “I notice the dishwasher is still full.” Rather than gushing praise, give a specific description. “I notice you emptied the dishwasher…without me asking.” (Try to blurt that out before you faint.) Be blameworthy. Proudly stand up to making

a mistake and own it. This is by far the most effective way to teach accountability. After all, if somebody like my parent can admit to a mistake then it must be okay. Have a sense of humour about the messiness of being human. Take a moment now and

Allison Rees then to ask the question, “Did you make any mistakes today?” Not to teach a lesson but to delight in it. Be open to corrective feedback yourself. We are either closed or open to learning. Sometimes we may need a moment to open up, but let that be your goal. While you can notice if somebody is throwing the blame ball, it’s even better to notice ownership. “I’m hearing you take responsibility for your actions. That takes courage!”

Your child’s progress is monitored daily, and every 3 months, each student is awarded a medal indicating his or her progress in our new proprietary 14 level, 1400 skill program. We are a family oriented business. Classes are scheduled so that varying ages and genders can take part in different classes at the same time. Victoria Gymnastics is clean…very clean! Our facilities are ozone treated. Consistent, safe and experienced coaching in a well structured, safe and fun environment— NCCP certification coaches and First Aid.
