HILTON HEAD HISTORY Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1520s Conquistadors explored the area.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. 18 Island Events November 2021

hiltonhead.com

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Late 1950s Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

Today Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly Sea Island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

HOROSCOPE ARIES

A recent shift in family dynamics has the potential to cause a lot of tension, but it doesn’t have to, and the way you handle the situation can be a model for others. This month, step up and take the high road.

TAURUS Plotting out your next steps can bring peace of mind when little else can. A warning: be sure to build in some wiggle room. This month, you may experience setbacks that cost time and money. A little padding in your schedule will go a long way toward lessening the blow! GEMINI

When you’re ruled by the planet of communication (Mercury), you’re bound to get into the semantic and linguistic weeds on occasion. Just remember: not everyone s s i tio i it o rotr t verbose discussion? Track down a Libra!

CANCER It’s time to shake things up, Cancer. Managing everything has been your way of coping but you’re exhausted. This month, s it o r rs o t o t pies around you and don’t interfere unless it’s absolutely necessary. At the end of the day, take stock of how everything went. LEO Your progress in the project department is something to behold. Just six months ago, you couldn’t have guessed where you would be now. Take some time this month to remember where you started and how you got here. You’ve made a lot happen and you should be proud! VIRGO

According to scientists, gratitude is a key piece of the happiness puzzle. This month, think back to a time when you needed help and someone was really there for you. Even if it’s been a while, some token of your appreciation will mean a lot to both of you. 26 Island Events November 2021

NOVEMBER 2021 LIBRA Things may be feeling increasingly out of your control, lately. What can you really do about it? You can control how you react, and that’s it. Give it a shot and see what ensues. SCORPIO

When was the last time someone really listened to what you were saying? Do you remember how amazing it felt just to be heard? You will be called upon to do that for someone else this month. Do your best to be a supportive sounding board and nothing more!

SAGITTARIUS

You may have gotten some good advice recently that you didn’t take. Now with hindsight (and therefore 20/20), ask yourself: is it too late to consider the wisdom of the words you were offered? If so, how might they change your path going forward?

CAPRICORN

Where is your head lately, Capricorn? Revisiting the past is okay but dwelling there is a psychological burden you don’t need. If you can’t escape it, set aside a time to really immerse yourself in this season you can’t let go of; it might just give you the relief you seek.

AQUARIUS

You’ve been haunted by the following question: to go or not to go? To make this decision, you’re going to have to shed all outside expectations and just do what you feel is right.

PISCES You may be feeling super sick of your wardrobe. Have you considered sprucing it up by hitting a thrift store or two? Just because a piece no longer works for someone else doesn’t mean it can’t work wonders for you. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

WHAT TO KNOW On Hilton Head Island

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They're everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic— don't stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it's even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don't change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

Putting with with

Pirates

By Dani Ray

I

n the heart of Hilton Head Island just off of Hwy. 278, at Mile Marker 8.5, “X” marks the spot. It’s a treasured retreat that winds through a seaside village, a tidal lagoon and a cave, all amid lush tropical landscaping and rushing waterfalls. Here, shade is abundant, adventure is in the air, the music is maritime and around every corner...pirates! It’s called Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf, and it’s been a staple of family fun on Hilton Head for more than 30 years. Just ask the Internet, “so many people come here after seeing us on TripAdvisor,” confirms Manager Harold Mason. This is not surprising, as Pirate’s Island earned a 2021 “Traveler’s Choice” badge, has amassed over 900 “Excellent” reviews and is ranked #2 on the list of “Fun & Games” on Hilton Head! Top marks go to the “meticulously” maintained course and the “extremely friendly and genuinely excited” staff, with the dynamic duo of Harold and Cindy frequently recognized by guests. Also making a splash is a fun new web-based app in place of the traditional scorecard. It allows players to save and send scores and provides additional pirate lore. Harold smiles. “We put a lot of effort into improvements, adding props, signage, new carpet, widening sidewalks for wheelchair and stroller accessibility — and people notice! Our guests return each year and comment that Pirate’s Island keeps getting better with each visit.” It’s not just annual visitors coming back, though, as many guests return multiple times during a single visit to Hilton Head! Pirate’s Island’s two courses — one kid-friendly and the other more 36 Island Events November 2021

challenging — make it easy to justify coming back to play all 36 holes. With gorgeous koi to feed in the fish pond, pirate hats, flags for the kiddos and a free round of golf per group, it’s the kind of absorbing experience that makes the best kind of vacation memories. Perhaps most endearing is that Pirate’s Island really works at its stated mission to “make the world a better place.” Thirty-three Adventure Golf courses, Pirate’s Islands, Pirate’s Coves and JungleGolf of Fort Myers combine to coordinate two annual charity events. Labor Day’s Putting for Progress and Memorial Day’s Putting for Patriots have raised over $1,000,000 for multiple charities over the years. On Hilton Head, Pirate’s Island also takes their portable golf hole to local fall and winter festivals, school and church events and special occasions at Shelter Cove Park. All in all, it’s the kind of business it feels great to support, and there’s plenty of good, old-fashioned fun to be had along the way. Arrr you ready, mateys? Set your course for Pirate’s Island! DAWG TAVERN By Dani Ray If you imagined that Top Dawg Tavern must have been dreamt up by a couple of diehard Georgia fans, you’d be right. Well, half right. Renee and Brett Summers had one final decision to make before opening their brand new restaurant: its name. Renee’s team and alma mata was nearby UGA, but Brett had gone to the University of Oklahoma. Fortunately, a beloved OU mascot, Top Daug, would provide the compromise that saved the day. Thus, Top Dawg Tavern was born. But it was another birth, that of their daughter, Genevieve, that set the plan for Top Dawg into motion. “Brett was working long hours and I was commuting daily from Athens to Atlanta,” says Renee. “Her arrival changed everything, and we knew we were going to need a better work/life balance.” On March 4th, 2013, the first Top Dawg Tavern opened in Bethlehem, GA. “It was 10 minutes from home, and Genevieve came with us to sign the papers. She’s nine now, and talks to us about commodities and margins.” Renee laughs. “But her official title is Chief French Fry Taster, and she’s a natural!” Genevieve has also helped design Top Dawg’s intricate kids’ space, complete with a giant mural, a chalkboard wall, a bubble machine and “an iPad for your feet” with over 200 games to keep the little ones moving and entertained. The rest of the interior was Renee’s department, and would again be all about bal40 Island Events November 2021

ance. Top Dawg has NFL game tickets and access to SEC, ACC and Big Ten networks, but it’s open and homey, with no neon or flashing lights. Comfy booths help guests settle in and feel at home. “We wanted it to be a place where you could take grandma after church or watch the game. The culture,” she says, “is all about service with a smile.” And then there’s the food! Some favorites include bite-sized tenderloin filets over mashed potatoes with creamy horseradish, sesame crusted and seared rare ahi tuna with wasabi dipping sauce, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and bacon, salmon in a sweet bourbon glaze and blackened chicken over rotini with cream sauce and parmesan. Also wildly popular are the juicy Tavern Burgers, made with freshly pattied Black Angus Beef, and the Build Your Own Salad option! On Sundays, Top Dawg does brunch from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with live acoustic music and all the staples. Plus, this is the place to be if UGA and OU go head-to-head in January... just sayin’. So head on over to Top Dawg Tavern, find a shady spot on the patio overlooking the marina and let the games begin! Lowcountry Oysters By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist

F

all and winter mean oyster season in the South. With the humidity lowering and the cool breezes of fall blowing in, there is nothing better than sharing an oyster roast with friends and family. Oysters from Beaufort County are unique in flavor with a salty sweetness unrivaled by oysters from any other area. South Carolina’s coast is home to Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea virginica). Eastern Oysters can be found in our intertidal zone and, thus, are very tolerant creatures. They can withstand great variations in air exposure, temperature and salinity and are a keystone species for our estuary systems. This means that when the oysters are strong and healthy, so is the rest of the ecosystem, with oyster reefs providing habitat to over 120 varietal species, such as fish, shrimp, crab and other mollusks. They eat by filter feeding phytoplankton out of the water column and are the best water filter we have in South Carolina. One oyster can filter about seven gallons of water per day! Oyster reefs also protect our islands and mainland by acting as a natural breakwater, absorbing wave energy that could potentially be harmful to our shores. Reproduction takes place in the summer months when the water temperature is

42 Island Events November 2021

greater than 68 degrees. Male and female oysters release reproductive material into the water column, creating free-swimming larvae called spat. This spat will be carried through our waterways by tides and currents looking for a hard substrate to attach itself to. The best thing for spat is to attach to another oyster shell, but they can also fasten on to wood, concrete or other forms of shells. Once the spat has found a suitable clutch, it will develop a full shell within 12-24 hours. Oyster populations are declining all along the Atlantic Coast. Overharvesting, water pollution, coastal development and wake from recreational boats all contribute to the decline of Eastern Oysters. Tens of thousands of bushels are harvested off the Atlantic coast each year, but fewer than 10% of the harvested shells are returned to our waterways. Without these shells being placed back into the water, the oyster spat are finding less clutch to grow on. South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement (SCORE) is a program by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) of South Carolina to increase our oyster population. Volunteers work together to plant clutch material in order to recruit more juvenile oysters. They have also established oyster recycling facilities, where both businesses and individuals can deposit used shells, to be placed back out into our waterways. hiltonhead.com

Enjoy the Outdoors There are so many ways to experience the Lowcountry’s wild beauty this season. By Anneliza Itkor

N

ovember is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your family and friends. With Thanksgiving just around the corner — and relatives from all over the country flocking to Hilton Head Island like migratory birds — it could be helpful to have some plans and ideas in place to get everyone outside. First and foremost, it’s important to prepare any visitors for your adventuring plans with guidance on how to dress for a November escapade. The average temperatures in November here on the Island range between a low of 49 degrees and a high of 70 degrees. The key to having an awesome outdoor experience in cooler weather is to dress appropriately. Advise visiting family to bring layers to accommodate potential 20-degree temperature swings. Take into consideration that winter tends to be rather wet here on Hilton Head Island, so waterproof gear would be a smart addition to any suitcase. If you’re planning on getting out on the water, remember that jackets, pants and shoes that are quick-dry and/or water-resistant are a better choice than clothes made out of natural fibers like cotton and wool. Bear in mind that it can feel chillier on or near the water, so packing a knit hat and a pair of gloves would also be a good idea. Many people may think kayaking or boating is a summertime activity, but our tidal marshes are stunning in the late fall, with the Spartina grass taking on a golden hue and our water clearing as the phytoplankton begins to die back.

Near the shore, you can spot American Oystercatchers, Piping Plovers and Willets. Our resident bottlenose dolphin can be spied frolicking in local waterways. Plus, mussels and periwinkle snails can be seen in the high marsh. Biking is another fantastic fall option to get a group outside and exploring. Bike on the beach or take advantage of the miles of bike trails on the Island. Want to ramp up the fun? Take a guided E-bike tour of Hilton Head Island or Palmetto Bluff 46 Island Events November 2021

and enjoy the thrill of zipping from place to place on these electricalassisted bikes. You can also gear up the group and head out for a hike. Mitchelville Beach Park at low tide is a real treat. You’ll discover all kinds of cool ocean critters wandering on the mud flats and see birds feeding in scores of tidal pools. Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge is another great hiking choice. Be sure to bring water — and be aware there are no bathroom facilities on-site. However, these minor inconveniences are well worth the incredible beauty of the vast stretches of marsh and the bird life that festoons the freshwater lagoons. This fall, get out, explore the beauty of the Lowcountry and think about all that we have to be thankful for here on Hilton Head Island.

My Friend and Ally, Sand

How golfers can use this tricky substance to their advantage By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

S

and is my friend. Admittedly, it’s a statement debated by golfers everywhere. My thoughts are this: if you know what you’re doing, sand can o r i i i t s ot easy. Some advanced players even prefer the sand to playing out of the long and scraggly grass, which can be unpredictable. In the Lowcountry, the rough is Bermuda grass, which has thick, coarse blades that grab the club head and can make it twist and stop. For navigating in the sand, I recommend the following techniques:

hands allow wrist hinge, which •willSoft make for a higher trajectory.

open stance with a slightly •openKeepclubanface. An open stance helps to regulate backswing and encourages the lower body to lead on the downswing.

the distance of the shot •withRegulate the amount of sand taken and the length of the backswing.

Beware the bounce of the club •head, which hits the sand before the leading edge, resulting in the ball bouncing up.

When executed correctly, the club head slices through the sand like a knife through warm butter. Sand really can be a golfer’s friend. It’s mine and it could be yours as well! North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. FISHING FOR FLOUNDER

A

master of camouflage and ambush, the flounder is one of the oddest-looking fish that swims our local waters. Flat with both eyes on one side of its body, it has the capability of altering its coloration to match the bottom of the ocean floor where it lies in wait for its prey. Jaws full of sharp teeth expand to facilitate the lightningquick strike, which is usually followed by its return to the bottom to savor its catch. This behavior can puzzle an angler who is fortunate enough to hook a flounder. When drifting bait on a cork, the cork will often stop as if it were snagged on the bottom. When casting an artificial, the flounder bite feels like a snag. As you reel the flounder in, it may feel like dead weight initially until the fish starts to battle; then hold on! Using its flatness and muscle, the flounder can put up a great fight. They are not born with both eyes on one side of their body. Flounder go through a process, metamorphosis, which occurs when they go from the larval state to the juvenile state. The top side, where the eyes are, is dark while the bottom side is white. I have seen some flounder that were partially dark on the bottom, but it’s rare. One thing is for sure – few people do not know how delicious the flounder is; it is widely sought commercially and highly valuable. Locally, it is often a surprise to anglers chasing the more available speckled trout and redfish. To our north, from Myrtle Beach to New York, anglers are blessed with better

52 Island Events November 2021

it has the capability of altering its coloration to match the bottom of the ocean floor flounder fishing as a target species, as they tend to school up more so than here. Occasionally large numbers can be caught at the offshore reefs, but inshore gigging is a more efficient method of procuring better numbers of flounder. The weather has cooled and so has the water, offering better clarity. November through January is a great season for artificial baits such as the soft plastic Gulp variety and the screwtail and paddle tail plastic jigs. There should be an abundance of speckled trout and redfish around and if you are lucky, that snag may be a bonus flounder! Capt. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
