The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 72 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • Always pass on the left. F
irst-time visitors to Hilton Head get quite a surprise when they first encounter our nearshore waterways.
Unlike most coastal areas, there is no crisp divide between land and water. Instead, our creeks and rivers are flanked by miles of tidal salt marsh. In fact, the states of Georgia and South Carolina are home to more area of salt marsh than the rest of the United States combined! Life in the salt marsh is constantly changing, depending on the tide. All of the plants and animals that live there are uniquely adapted to take advantage of the rising and falling waters. The tide is caused by the gravitational force of the moon. It is a complex series of factors that produces, on most days, two high and two low tides per day. The tide cycle, from low to high, is about six hours and fifteen minutes; as a result, the highs and lows are approximately an hour later each day. In our area, the difference between high and low tide is anywhere from 6 to 12 feet, depending on the moon phase. The most important species in the salt marsh is the most obvious one, the bright

The geological history of the Lowcountry has made it so that we have no naturally occurring rocks. Loose sediment comes in off of the ocean or down from the mountains, and it is the job of Spartina to hold on to it and, in turn, build new land and prevent existing land from washing out to sea. One of the animals that is heavily dependent on the Spartina grass is the American oyster. These bivalves anchor themselves to the thick crochet of Spartina roots and there they spend their entire lives. While all oysters on the East Coast of the United States are the same species, those in the Lowcountry are uniquely adapted to our tidal environment. At high tide they are underwater, constantly feeding by filtering nutrients out of the water. As the tide recedes, they are exposed to the air, and often extreme temperatures. Their soft bodies survive being out of the water by tightly closing their shell. Oysters don’t swim, or bite, but their razor-sharp shells make them the most dangerous animal in our waters. For some smaller animals, the nooks and crannies between the oysters offer great protection from the multitude of predators hunting them. The Spartina grass also provides these safe spaces and, thanks to all these great hiding places, the salt marsh is the preferred spot for juvenile fish and shellfish to start their lives. In fact, about 94% of the fish that we enjoy locally started their lives in the salt marsh. The scenery of the salt marsh is always changing. At high tide, the tops of the grass and the water are all you see. At low tide, another universe of oysters, crabs, mud, Spartina roots and fishing birds comes to life. 6 Tips for 2026 Easy ways to improve your time on the green!

There are many tips and insights I’ve learned during my decades-long love affair with golf. Here are half-adozen that can improve any game.
utting correctly will im ro e your ri er - The fundamentals are similar; soft grip, athletic posture, shoulders start the backswing and release the clubhead. Golfers don’t always connect the two shots or the similarities of the putter and driver designs. When golfers understand the similarities, they don’t think as much, and perform better on the golf course.
Let others watch your ball - If you look up, you won’t like what you see. If you look down, the ball goes up. Like driving a car, stay focused on the road, not the distractions to the side. Tell one joke per round - The benefits of laughter will lower your score. Laughter produces endorphins, which act as pain relievers and mood boosters, helping reduce stress and improve your mental game. Here’s an example: I was playing with Lee Trevino. He missed the putt and yelled, “Caddy! You left the cover on the putter. The crowd erupted in laughter. Trevino birdied the next hole. When it’s breezy, swing easy - When you swing at 70% effort you’re more likely to strike the sweet spot. This impact has maximum force and the ball will go farther and straighter. Babe Ruth promoted the same principle in home runs. If I try to hit home runs, I hit foul balls and strike out. If I try to hit it solid, I hit home runs. The Hilton Head Island Shrimp Festival returns for the th year on the lawn ad acent to the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town at The Sea Pines Resort from 1-4 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature all-you-can-eat shrimp prepared by local chefs, craft beer from more than a dozen breweries, live music, kids’ activities, and specialty vendors. S
eptember is a special time here in the Lowcountry. We’re deep into the dog days of summer, with warm weather and water, but there’s a welcome shift in the air as things start to ease into a slower, more relaxed rhythm. Our gardens and marshes come alive with butterflies, splashes of orange, yellow, and silver drifting through the air as they search for nectar and prepare for their upcoming breeding season. Keep an eye out for some of the most common butterflies you’ll spot fluttering around the island this time of year: Monarchs and their near-identical cousins the Gulf Fritillaries, along with graceful Swallowtails and bright Cloudless Sulphurs. There are a few reasons the Lowcountry becomes such a butterfly haven each fall. We’re home to many resident species year round, and we also serve as an important waypoint for the larger migration moving south. Our autumn landscape is loaded with blooming groundsel trees, asters, and goldenrods, giving them the fuel they need, while our coastal maritime habitats, with their thick shrubs and maritime forests, offer shelter and roosting spots to rest and regroup before continuing their journey. It’s this combination of nourishment and refuge that makes our stretch of coast such a popular butterfly haven. Monarchs are famous the world over, and most people assume ours are headed to the fir forests of Mexico each winter. Recent research tells a different story. A five-year South Carolina study found monarchs right here along our coast in every month of the year, meaning many never make that trip south at all. In the spring, summer, and fall, these mon-

archs spread out across Coastal Plain swamps, relying on aquatic milkweed as the host plant for their eggs and caterpillars. Once winter arrives, they shift to our sea islands and barrier beaches, where the humid, mild climate offers a surprisingly close stand in for those Mexican mountains. It’s here that they mate and lay eggs on swallow wort, a milkweed relative that researchers only recently recognized as another key host plant, proof that our Lowcountry marshes are doing more heavy lifting for this species than anyone realized. Gulf Fritillaries are often mistaken for a monarch at first glance, but flip one over and you’ll see the silvery, metallic spots on the underside of its wings that give it the nickname “silverspot.” They’re closely tied to passionflower vines, the host plant females rely on to lay their eggs, and you’ll often spot them working lantana blooms in local gardens. Cloudless Sulphurs bring a solid wash of lemon yellow to the mix and, like the Gulf Fritillary, actually overwinter right here as adults rather than migrating far south. Come late fall, both species settle into the Lowcountry for the winter, sticking around as long as the weather stays mild, which means the butterfly show in our gardens doesn’t have to end when September does. Our Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, the official state butterfly, is easy to pick out with its bold yellow and black wings and long tails, and its caterpillars favor the leaves of poplar, willow, and maple trees. Rather than migrating, the Swallowtails ride out our winters right here in the chrysalis stage, emerging again each spring. If you want to see some of these butterflies up close, stop by the butterfly habitat at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. It’s a peaceful, family friendly spot to watch these fall visitors in action, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly, and admission is free. Whether you’re a lifelong Lowcountry local or just passing through, it’s a wonderful reminder of how much color and life fills our little corner of the coast each fall.
