RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 72 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • Always pass on the left. When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” 32 Island Events October 2026

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths. • Be courteous, alert and predictable. • WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

HOROSCOPE ARIES It’s time to shake things up, Aries! Follow your curiosity, instead of your routine. Wander down a street you’ve never explored, say yes to the invitation or sign up for that class you’ve been eyeing. Adventure doesn’t always require a suitcase. If an awkward conversation has been haunting you, face it head-on! You’ll wonder why you waited so long. TAURUS The world slows

down just enough this month for you to savor it. Grab the warm drink, take the scenic route, linger a little longer at the farmer’s market. Not everything needs to be rushed. Someone may surprise you with kindness or an unexpected invitation. Accept it. The best October memories are often the ones you never planned.

GEMINI Your calendar may be full, but don’t forget to leave room for spontaneity. A last-minute festival, a ghost tour or an evening around a backyard fire could be the highlight of your month. The answer you’ve been searching for probably won’t arrive while staring at a screen. Go live a little, then see how differently things look. CANCER Cozy season was

made for you, Cancer! Invite people over, bake something that fills the house with good smells or dust off a favorite family tradition. The people who matter most aren’t looking for perfection; they’re just happy to be with you. Let yourself be seen this month. Your warmth has a way of making everyone else feel at home.

OCTOBER 2026 LIBRA You are in your element this month, Libra! Crisp evenings, haunted trolley tours, festivals, twinkling lights, beauty and fun are everywhere you look. Say yes to the gallery opening, the outdoor concert or dinner under the stars. Your social calendar is calling you and your creativity, and it’s less interested in perfection than participation. SCORPIO Happy birthday season, Scorpio! This is your reminder that reinvention doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it starts with a new perspective, a cleaned-out closet or finally letting go of an old story you’ve outgrown. Trust your instincts! They’re especially sharp. But don’t mistake every mystery for a problem that needs solving. Some things are more fun when they unfold in their own time. SAGITTARIUS Adventure

is calling and it may be closer than you think. Explore that new museum, visit the festival you’ve wanted to attend or spend an afternoon somewhere you’ve never noticed before. You don’t have to cross an ocean to discover something wonderful. Keep your sense of wonder close. It’ll lead you exactly where you need to be.

CAPRICORN You’ve been

carrying something heavier than it needs to be. This month, clear the air. One honest conversation can feel like opening the windows after a long season. Once that’s behind you, reward yourself with a little fun. Yes, FUN! The to-do list will be there tomorrow, but October only comes once a year.

LEO You’re magnetic this October, Leo. Your enthusiasm is contagious, so use it well. Plan the costume, host the gathering, organize the weekend adventure. he spotlight naturally finds you, but sharing it may be even more rewarding. Sometimes the best memories come from making sure everyone else is having fun, too.

tle predictable, shake things up! Take a different route home. Read a genre you’d normally skip. Strike up a conversation with someone new. Curiosity is your superpower this month, and following it could lead to an unexpected opportunity or at the very least, a great story to tell.

VIRGO There is deep satisfac-

PISCES Rest can be wonderful-

tion in crossing things off your list, but don’t let the season slip by while you’re organizing it. Light the candle. Carve the pumpkin. uy the fresh flowers ust because they’re beautiful. A little fun isn’t a distraction from your goals; it might be exactly what helps you reach them with fresh energy. Drink your water and take that barre class. 36 Island Events October 2026

AQUARIUS If life feels a lit-

ly productive, Pisces. Let October be your recharge. Sleep in when you can. Watch an old favorite movie. Take an evening walk and leave your phone at home. You don’t have to solve every mystery, especially someone else’s. Protect your peace, laugh often, and trust that what belongs in your life won’t require you to chase it.

WHAT

Football and Golf HAVE IN COMMON

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

F

ootball and golf are wildly different sports, there’s no doubt about it. From team vs. solo play and the attire of the game to the pace of play and the pitch of the sounds around you, there are many elements that separate. But it’s also worth looking at the similarities of the two games to understand them better. To start, golf and football are both games in which mental fitness means a lot. oth sports are played outside in most weather conditions, which can affect the outcome of play. The right equipment also matters in both cases, as does pinpoint accuracy. But to drill down a little further, I would argue that the similarities really come down to the following:

1. Tactics.

The development of tactics to overcome the opposition is key. The main opposition is self and the golf course.

2. Tactical discipline.

Golfers and football players must make a game plan and stick to it.

3. Knowledge of the rules.

Missteps with the rules of the game can wreak havoc on a football field and in a golfer’s game. 42 Island Events October 2026

4. Technical skill.

The technical skills needed for excellence in both games require competence from drilling and attention. There’s no getting away from it! Fundamentals make golf more fun. Dr. Bob Rotella said that golf is not a game of perfect, and I agree. But longtime football coach Vince Lombardi may have said it best: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” Ready to give it a go? Come see me! North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday at 4 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call (866) 455-6890 or go to palmettodunes.com for more information. hiltonhead.com

called the tidal range. As enormous amounts of water move into and out of our sounds, rivers, and creeks, they also create tidal currents. These currents can become especially strong where water is pushed through narrow channels, something boaters, paddlers, swimmers, and fishermen quickly learn to respect.

THE PULSE of the Lowcountry By Master Naturalist, Kathleen McMenamin at the Island Recreation Center

T

he world moves in ebbs and flows, but the beauty of the Lowcountry is that we can watch those changes happen right before our eyes. The salt marsh transforms throughout the day, filling with water at high tide before slowly draining to reveal mud, oyster reefs, winding creeks, and wildlife hidden beneath the surface. Along the coast, beaches seem to grow as the tide retreats and shrink as the water returns. The tide is the pulse of the Lowcountry, something we can see, feel, and experience every day. Without this constant movement of water, our landscape would not be the remarkable ecosystem we know today. The Moon and Sun both pull on Earth’s oceans with gravity, but the Moon has the greatest influence on our tides. As Earth turns and the Moon travels around it, ocean water shifts in a regular pattern, giving us high and low tides. Think of the Moon as setting the rhythm while Earth turns beneath it. Because the Moon is moving too, the whole cycle takes about 24 hours and 50 minutes instead of 24 hours. This is why you may notice that tomorrow’s high tide is usually about 50 minutes later than today’s. Here on Hilton Head Island, we typically experience two high tides and two low tides during that cycle, with about six hours between high and low water. The difference between the height of high and low water is

50 Island Events October 2026

The size of our tides also varies throughout the month. Around new and full moons, the gravitational pulls of the Sun and Moon work together to create a larger difference between high and low water, called a spring tide. Around quarter moons, their pulls partially work against each other and the difference is smaller, creating a neap tide. Occasionally, we experience exceptionally high astronomical tides known as king tides. Weather can change water levels even further, which is why the water outside may sometimes be higher or lower than the tide chart predicts. Humans tend to organize our lives around clocks, but much of the Lowcountry’s wildlife organizes life around the water. Rising tides open feeding grounds across the marsh, allowing fish, shrimp, and crabs to move into flooded areas. Falling tides can concentrate fish into smaller creeks and channels, creating opportunities for predators. Wading birds take advantage of the shallower water, while crabs move between burrows and feeding areas. Even our bottlenose dolphins follow the tides, sometimes using a specialized hunting technique called strand feeding. Working together, they chase fish onto the marsh bank and briefly slide partly out of the water to catch them. The tides also help the marsh function as one connected ecosystem. Moving water carries nutrients, food, sediment, and tiny organisms between the ocean, creeks, and marsh. It brings salty ocean water inland and carries organic material back toward larger waterways. Plants and animals have adapted to this constantly changing environment, creating communities that can thrive both above and below the waterline. The next time you stand beside a Lowcountry waterway, take a moment to notice where the water is. Come back about six hours later and the view may be completely different. The tide is the heartbeat of the Lowcountry, connecting land and sea and shaping life with every rise and fall. hiltonhead.com

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. October 2026 Island Events 55
