• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

I’ve met a lot of people thanks to my love of golf, played with a lot of them too. Back in 1989 that included three days with MLB great and two-time World Series winner Mark McGwire.

We spent a lot of time talking about the similarities between our favorite sports, golf and baseball. You see, Big Mac may be a 583 home run hitter, but he’s also a darn good golfer.

There are reasons. Both games require a rotary motion. Whether it's the swing of a golf club or the batting and throwing in baseball, the same muscles are being developed

Additionally, baseball and golf use cleats to take advantage of ground for es. uring training for either s ort oa hes often focus on footwork, first teaching students to use cleats to grab on to the ground and then to push off.

There is also similarity in the design of a bat and a golf club, although maybe not as noticeable. The handle on both pieces of sporting equipment are light, while the head or barrel on the opposite end is heavy. It’s a design that lets your body tap into centrifugal force, the same power David used to

beat Goliath.

With practice and learned skill, you can see centrifugal force in action each time the bat, the club or the ball is released and physics takes over… The bat, the club and the ball accelerate thanks to skill and applied, simple science.

These are just some of the reasons golf is attractive to people of all sizes! The golfer with smaller stature and refined skill can outplay and outdrive the big golfer with muscle and poor technique nearly every time.

While enjoying a beautiful spring day outside, a neighbor stopped me along our walking path to share a secret hiding in a wax myrtle. Tucked quietly inside the shrub sat a female cardinal on her nest, perfectly camouflaged, still and silent, yet her watchful eyes told us she knew we were there. She held her ground, instinctively knowing that stillness was her best defense for protecting what was hidden beneath her.

Cardinals are one of the most familiar birds in the South Carolina Lowcountry. It proudly serves as the state bird of seven states, more than any other bird in the United States, and people across generations have looked to it with a sense of wonder, with many believing that a cardinal appearing nearby is a gentle visit from a loved one no longer with us.

Here in the Lowcountry, cardinals are a true year-round neighbor, making themselves at home in woodland edges, gardens, and overgrown fields, with a particular love for thick dense shrubs like the wax myrtle where our neighbor made her quiet discovery. Over the past century they have been expanding northward, a spread many wildlife experts attribute to the growing popularity of backyard bird feeders stocked with sunflower seeds. Despite this northward expansion, cardinals remain uncommon west of the Great Plains, making the eastern half of the country their true stronghold.

The male cardinal is dressed in his signature brilliant red plumage, making him one of the easiest birds to spot in any yard or tree line. While the male’s bold color helps him attract a mate and defend his territory, the female’s more subtle appearance provides her with natural camouflage, keeping her and her eggs hidden from preda-

tors as she sits quietly on the nest, much like the one tucked away in the wax myrtle along our path. While the female incubates the eggs, the male takes on the role of devoted partner, bringing her food and standing guard over their territory with his sharp and distinctive call. Cardinals are committed companions, staying bonded throughout the year, looking after one another and their young through every season.

The Northern Cardinal has a rich and fascinating presence in folklore and legend that stretches back centuries. The cardinal’s very name traces back to European settlers who connected the male’s vivid red color and crested head to the red vestments and headdresses of high-ranking Roman Catholic bishops. Perhaps the most widely held piece of cardinal folklore is the belief that a visit from one of these birds carries a message from a loved one who has passed. While this belief cannot be traced to a single origin, it speaks to something deeply human, as birds across many cultures have long been seen as heavenly messengers, visitors from the divine, or even the gods themselves in feathered form. The Choctaw tribe held their own special connection to the redbird, referencing it as a matchmaker with the power to bring a young maiden and a brave together. This association with love and romance has carried forward through the generations, and the lighthearted belief still holds today that if you are single and a cardinal crosses your path, romance may be just around the corner.

So the next time a flash of red catches your eye or a clear whistling call rises above the morning chorus, take a moment to appreciate the Northern Cardinal. Whether you see it as a neighbor, a symbol, or a welcome reminder of someone you love, this remarkable bird has earned every bit of the wonder it inspires.
