Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park invites the public to join in the powerful, familyfriendly 12th Annual Juneteenth Weekend Celebration from June 11-13. This threeday series of events blends history, culture, music, and community in a joyful celebration of our shared history, hosted on the very grounds of the first self-governed town established by formerly enslaved people in the United States. Programming includes a full slate of events, such as interactive children’s activities, African drumming, nature exhibits, a cultural sleepover experience, and a main all-day event on Saturday. Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of alligators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

t’s hard to express the joy that teaching golf brings me. This is in part because of my own love for the game, but I think it’s also because it brings so much joy to others. I often wish people could see what I see on a daily basis as a golf instructor — so this month, I’m going to tell you.

I see a beginner — initially frustrated by the many, many things that they must learn. But they keep coming back because golf digs into you that way. And over time, as a love for the game blossoms, I see growth and determination, a player overcoming each challenge. I also see the birth of a sportsman or sportswoman, on their way to becoming a mature golfer who is reaching — stretching themselves — toward their potential.

I see children reveling in a game that keeps them outside, moving and thinking. They are learning to play by the rules, developing patience and enjoying the encouragement from parents, friends and instructors. They are seeing not just the way the game is played, but the way players treat each other. They begin to understand that they

too will need to demonstrate accountability and responsibility in the care of their equipment. A very young child (only three!) amazes his parents with what he is able to do with the guidance of an excellent coach.

I see a young couple deepening their bond, as they watch each other handle the challenges of the game; two boys playing against the backdrop of a windswept shore; a group emulating their hero in Rickie Fowler orange and women playing so impressively that crowds watch in awe at their show of skill and determination.

I see a recently retired couple taking on a new game, and getting closer as they tackle it together. It’s a social game, a game of movement and grace, and it requires every part of the brain. They grow together in their endeavor, encourage each other and leave hand-in-hand, looking forward to their next opportunity to step up to the tee.

For me, this is the power of the game of golf. Come see us, and discover the golfer in you.

The American Mink

In the lush, sprawling marshes of the South Carolina Lowcountry, a small but remarkable mammal quietly goes about its life, largely unnoticed by the many who share its home. With sleek, rich brown fur and a body built for both land and water, this creature has found its paradise among the winding tidal creeks and dense cordgrass of Hilton Head. The marsh provides everything it could ask for: abundant prey, hidden shelter, and endless waterways to explore. Endlessly curious, remarkably swift, and surprisingly intelligent, this little predator is perfectly suited to the rhythms of the Lowcountry.

The American mink is a study in sleek, purposeful design. Its long, slender body and short, stout legs give it a lowslung, agile profile, standing just three-and-a-half inches at the shoulder and stretching anywhere from eighteen to twenty-four inches in length. Don’t let its modest size fool you, as it can tip the scales at up to three pounds of pure muscle. Its coat is nothing short of striking: a soft, dense underfur concealed beneath glossy guard hairs. The overall color is a rich, deep brown, and many individuals sport a distinctive white patch on the chin or chest, a helpful tell when distinguishing the mink from its larger cousin, the river otter. True to its nature, the mink is seldom found far from water. It favors saltwater marshes, river swamps, and wooded stream banks, and here on Hilton Head, the marsh serves as both pantry and playground, offering a rich and steady supply of fish, crabs, and shrimp.

Despite their small stature, mink lead surprisingly full and complex lives. Breeding season runs from January through March, with litters arriving in late April to early May. A mother mink will typically raise three to four young, nursing them for up to nine weeks before gradually introducing them to the world outside the den. The young stay close to their mother through the fall, learning the ways of the marsh, before striking out on their own as the seasons change. On their own is truly how the mink prefers it, as they are intensely solitary animals, each one staking out its own stretch of marsh and waterway. Most active at dusk and dawn, they are tireless in their nightly pursuits, capable of traveling anywhere from two to seven miles in a single night in search of prey. When the hunt leads to water, they are more than ready, as mink are skilled divers, able to plunge to depths of up to sixteen feet. Intelligent, intense, and endlessly curious, they

climb, dive, explore, and investigate everything their marsh world has to offer. Perhaps nothing illustrates their cunning better than their opportunistic habit of slipping in to steal a fish during dolphin strand feeding, a behavior as bold as it is clever.

The American mink’s story in South Carolina has not been without hardship. Populations have declined since the 1950s, likely due in part to the widespread contamination of waterways by pesticides such as DDT. While mink were once heavily trapped for their prized fur, the rise of commercial mink farming has largely relieved that pressure on wild populations. Though natural predators such as bobcats, foxes, great horned owls, and alligators pose a threat, it is humans who remain the mink’s greatest challenge, as pollution, and the steady loss of healthy marsh habitat have proven far more damaging than any natural predator. Yet the mink endures, and its presence in our Lowcountry marshes is something worth celebrating. As a top-level predator, it regulates populations of fish, rodents, and amphibians, keeping our wetlands balanced and functional, and its very presence is a sign that our beloved Lowcountry is still healthy and thriving.

Spring’s warmer waters have populated quickly with a diverse and bountiful population of sharks. These tackle-busting brutes offer great sport — and plenty of it.

Long known as a primary breeding ground for many species, the local waters near Hilton Head Island host many types of sharks, including hammerheads, tigers, blacktip, spinners, sharp nose and bonnet-heads, just to name a few. In the last few years, even great whites have been captured here.

As with many fish, the decline of stocks, coupled with an exploding population of fishermen, has brought about numerous regulations, making it necessary to release most species, except for two in particular: the sharpnose and the bonnethead. Anglers may keep one of any size of these two shark species. Both are considered good eating, especially the bonnethead, whose diet consists primarily of shrimp and crab. Both shark species can be caught in local sounds and creeks with a variety of cut or live bait.

Other popular targets for shark

seekers are the blacktip and spinner sharks. Nicknamed “poor man’s tarpon” for their aerial antics — which can be spectacular — these sharks require a 54-inch minimum length to keep. Both the blacktip and the spinner shark are excellent table fare. The bigger versions of these species are often found behind working shrimp boats, as they love to scavenge tidbits and, much to the chagrin of shrimpers, frequently bite holes in the nets to help themselves to a feast!

Offshore, many anglers target the big tiger sharks, which average 8 to 10 feet and weigh up to a thousand pounds. Heavy tackle is required, along with stamina. These battles can go on for hours. Tiger sharks are tough customers, to say the least.

The opportunity for hours of angling enjoyment with a wide variety of sharks is available here all summer long. And for those who may raise an eyebrow about safety, just remember that you are far better off swimming in the ocean than driving along Hwy. 278!
