5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of alligators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

Audubon Newhall Preserve

Come explore the beautiful Audubon Newhall Preserve, a 50-acre nature sanctuary located on the south end of the Island.

Managed by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society, a non-profit organi ation, this preserve is dedicated to protecting the native forest ecosystem and providing a space

for recreational and educational activities.

With a network of interconnected trails totaling about a mile, visitors can easily navigate and enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, the Preserve offers something for everyone.

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve welcomes visitors of all abilities. The wide paths and boardwalk are accessible for those with mobility challenges, and there are benches along the way for rest or observation. Be sure to check out the observation deck, where you can view the diverse wildlife that lives here.

Even furry friends are welcome at the preserve, as long as they're leashed. Please clean up after your pets to help maintain the pristine environment. www.hiltonheadaudubon.org/audubon-newhall-preserve.

Majestic Honey Horn

The sprawling, majestic Grounds and Gardens are a beckoningly beautiful location adorned with 68 acres of exploratory trails and floral designs throughout the property.

Starting at the Discovery House, a mile-long nature trail winds past some of the oldest structures on Hilton Head Island. Three wooden boardwalks extend into the Jarvis reek salt marsh, while fact-filled interpre-

tive panels guide you. They offer information about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce.

In the summer, you will be enchanted by the region’s only native butterfly enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butterflies. In the winter, you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

For five decades, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve has remained a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. With 605 acres of untouched beauty, this sanctuary boasts bridle paths, wetland boardwalks, bridges, and fishing docks. This e pansive preserve, nestled within the Sea Pines Resort, offers countless opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in its breathtaking landscapes.

Embark on a guided boat tour, go on a thrilling horseback ride, set out on a fishing expedition or take a relaxing wagon tour. If you prefer to go at your own pace, simply grab a map and meander through the trails. If you are not a resident or guest of the Sea Pines Resort, you will need to pay a gate fee to enter. www.seapines.com/experiences/ amenities/forest-preserve

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

HOROSCOPE

ARIES Hey, Aries! Love is in the air and it might be looking for you! Whether reigniting the romance with your special someone or finding something new, this could be an excellent opportunity for amour. It’s also a great time to explore! ou never know what you might find. But you’ve got to be healthy and balanced for it. It’ll pay off!

TAURUS Summer fun is in store for July. But remember that heat and sun can make even the sweetest disposition a little spicier than unusual. Be aware of a possible misunderstanding and draw on your genuine kindness and compassion to smooth the storm. A little grace goes a long way. This is an excellent time to go glamping or even take a road trip.

GEMINI Aching to spruce up the house? Your creative juices are flowing and now is the time to use them. Avoid splurging though; that nice bonus might not become a regular thing. You can easily refresh your space on a budget. This could also be an ideal time for a staycation. Enjoy some time with loved ones. Take care of yourself, too!

CANCER Feeling weighed down?

A little change might be just what you need! A fresh haircut, a few well-chosen clothing items, heck, even let the girl at the makeup counter try something new. Sometimes a reset can work wonders on the spirit. Find your center and stay grounded. Get outside, take a walk, meditate and call your family.

LEO Rest and self-care is just what you need this month, Leo! That could definitely include a pampering session. financial blessing could be headed your way. Even if it’s just a few hundred dollars, you can spare enough for a manicure or a blowout. If there’s more, you deserve the whole spa day. You’ll be surprised how much it will lift your spirits!

VIRGO You are in demand this month, Virgo! The attention might be flattering, but be choosy about where you spend your energy. It’s okay to politely decline if it’s not your scene. Spreading yourself too thin won’t help anyone. A lazy day at the pool with that new friend might be just what the doctor ordered.

LIBRA You’re in the spotlight this month, ibra! But also under scrutiny. Pause and think before you speak. When in doubt, offer to give it some thought or just say nothing. You’ve got plenty on your social card this July, but also a really positive opportunity. Don’t miss out because it might feel intimidating. Yoga and meditation are great for the mind.

SCORPIO You’ve got incredible opportunities on the horizon, Scorpio, and the will and talent to take them. Don’t sell yourself short. Dream bigger than you’ve ever dared! There’s also a chance to meet someone new. July is a fabulous time for weddings. And heads up, if you see an awesome travel deal, book it!

SAGITTARIUS An unexpected break could clear up some financial woes this month, but don’t rush to spend it all on a big trip. Wait until your head clears to see if it’s practical. Maybe a summertime block party is more pragmatic, with everyone pitching in a bit. Why not get to organizing? You could also be presented with an incredible opportunity. Take it!

CAPRICORN Romantic energy could be high this July. Positive changes could also bring some challenges. Be kind and sincere when you speak and listen to others with grace. Don’t close yourself off to possibilities. Been putting off some home improvements? Now is the ideal time to get started; just make sure your plan is clear. Also, grab your honey and go for a walk.

AQUARIUS Your peacekeeping skills may come in handy this month. Take the lead as soon as you hear rumbles. Other job news is more favorable; think inspired ideas, new opportunities, even une pected financial gain. But all work and no play is no fun! Take the opportunity to update your look. Plan a road trip and get together with friends.

PISCES You might hit some road bumps this July, but stay vigilant with your finances and speak softly to your dear one and it will all be well. On the job front you’re about to bring your team to victory. That doesn’t mean you should skip self-care. Head to your favorite workout spot, and prepare to go forth and conquer.

CHIP

to chipping on Lowcountry courses for the Championship

Did you know that Harbour Town Golf Links is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour?

With an average of 3,700 sq. ft. of greens, only Pebble Beach (3,500 sq. ft.) in California is smaller. ere, finesse and shot-making are more important to success than power, and players must plan their way around a course hemmed in by palmetto trees, live oaks with Spanish moss and even the occasional alligator! Another challenge is the tough Bermuda grass surrounding the greens, which can grab and twist the club head and cause the ball to go in the wrong direction. In other words, chipping skills are key.

ere’s my advice for making chipping a little less stressful and a little more fun.

Positioning:

• Lean 80% of your weight on the forward foot.

• Ball position should be middle to back in the stance.

• Move the ball back for a lower trajectory and forward for a higher trajectory.

• Hold the club with soft hands.

• ock your shoulders.

Physics:

• The club head meets the ball on the downswing and lifts it up (see above illustration).

• Listen for the ball to land on the green.

• and the ball on the first two steps of the green and let it roll like a putt.

Equipment:

• 7 iron flies in the air ³ distance and rolls ³ distance.

• pitching wedge flies ² air and rolls ² distance.

• sand wedge flies ³ air and rolls ³ distance.

Boo eekley chipped in to win the 2007 RBC Heritage Classic at Harbour Town Golf inks. In 2003, Davis ove III chipped in on his 72nd hole for the win. earn to chip correctly and you will relax, your driver will improve and you will save strokes!

Chasing Red Snapper

Spend enough time around the docks and marinas of Hilton Head Island and one name keeps coming up among anglers: Red Snapper. Whether you live for early morning offshore runs or you simply love sitting down to a great piece of fresh fish, this is one species that has captured the hearts of our coastal community, and there is even more reason to pay attention to what is happening with this fishery right now.

The Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) is a deep water fish found throughout the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic coast, including the waters off Hilton Head. True to its name, it sports a brilliant reddish-pink color with a slightly darker back, large red eyes, and a firm, streamlined body. Come July, that vivid red makes it feel like the fish was dressed for the occasion, a living celebration of the red, white, and blue, right at home in our coastal waters. Most of the Red Snapper caught locally weigh anywhere from five to fifteen pounds, though trophy fish topping thirty pounds are not unheard of in deeper offshore ledges and natural rock formations. These fish prefer structure. They congregate around rocky outcroppings, artificial reefs, shipwrecks, and ledges typically found at depths between 60 and 200 feet. The waters southeast of Hilton Head, stretching toward Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and beyond, offer exactly the kind of habitat Red Snapper love.

For a long time, anglers in South Carolina waters were not allowed to keep Red Snapper. Most pursue them 40 to 80 miles offshore on charter boats or well-equipped private vessels, using bottom fishing techniques with cut bait such as squid, cigar minnows, or fresh cut fish on a knocker rig or Carolina rig, only to have to send them back. The frustration was real. Many local fishermen remember going through extraordinary lengths just to bring one home legally Some would make the drive down to Georgia, where a rare single-day opening would draw crowds of dedicated anglers willing to wake up at midnight, hit the road in the dark, and spend an entire day on the water just for the

Found throughout the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic Coast

chance to come home with one of those beautiful red fish. It was the kind of effort that tells you everything you need to know about how special this fish is to people along this coast.

That is beginning to change. A new law now allows anglers along the South Carolina coast to keep Red Snapper they encounter, opening the door to a fishery that has long been out of reach for most. At the heart of this shift is the South Carolina Red Snapper Project, a state-based, angler-driven effort designed to collect better data on Red Snapper populations while giving fishermen greater access to the fishery. It is a win for science, a win for conservation, and a win for anyone who loves chasing one of the most sought-after fish in the Atlantic.

The Red Snapper is more than just a great catch. It is widely considered one of the finest eating fish in the ocean, with white, firm, mildly sweet meat that holds up beautifully on the grill or in the oven. It also represents the rich marine heritage of the Lowcountry and the responsibility we all share to be good stewards of these waters. By supporting efforts like the SC Red Snapper Project, we help keep this fishery healthy for generations to come. Tight lines, and we hope your next trip offshore brings you a cooler full of those beautiful red fish.

he large chunk of fresh-cut bait had scarcely touched bottom when the fish inhaled it and took off! As quickly as I moved the drag to the strike setting, the hefty rod bent double and went under the boat.

“Big brown, big brown!” my brother Don hollered, as the fish took to the air behind me. I could hear the large splash but was too busy bent over the side with the rod in the water trying to keep old big brown from rubbing the line against the hull and breaking off.

Don tilted the engine as I worked the fish back to my side of the boat and, after a few tense minutes of seesaw action between the line and the transducer, she was free once more.

As I handed the rod to my son Caleb, the fish broke water again.

The fish surged, taking line freely, and I held on to 10-year-old Caleb. It weighed at least half as much as my son, who groaned because of the strong pull of the fish. Slowly we worked the cobia back to the boat after 10 minutes of back-and-forth, but when the fish saw the boat, the line peeled off the reel again, despite Caleb’s protests.

While the cobia action wanes by mid-June, there are many other exciting species to be caught now. Near offshore on the reefs and in the creeks, the sheepshead are biting. Also biting are Spanish mackerel and blue-

fish off the sandbars close to the beach. The action is usually fast and furious when you encounter school fish. In the same areas, large jack crevalle can be found, along with an occasional bull redfish.

Patrolling the bait and Spanish mackerel schools, you never know where the big brother of the Spanish, the king mackerel, may be lurking. Weighing between 15 and 60 pounds, this royalty puts up an exciting battle.

Last, but hardly least, the real July crowd pleasers, especially with the younger generation, are the sharks. We have many species of shark here: bulls, blacktips, duskies, scalloped or bonnet heads, sand, reef, sharp nose and more.

Most of these sharks will be in the four-to five-foot range, but there are larger ones to be had. Charters are available to go offshore for the massive tiger sharks, often 12 feet or larger! The smaller ones can be caught on short trips and offer lots of regular action, a priority for younger anglers. Sharks make for great vacation memories and, most of all, the kids love them!
