Welcome to Issue 55, in this issue there is a wide range of articles from politics, promises . With the election looming next month we have our candidates pledging their commitment to the seat of Pumicestone with Ross Konowalenko, Fiona Gaske, Roger Ogden & Ali King.. Also, some wonderful human interest stories about taking care on the roads for our local resident wildlife, hidden Emeralds for rainy days, and how our Domestic Violence court in Caboolture is run and much more. Issue 55 brings an expansion to the LOCAL News now going into Elimbah and Central Lakes. We now print 24,000 each issue to cover these areas. Slowly we will be expanding into Caboolture, Morayfield and Burpengary. We are extremely excited to be expanding the LOCAL News into area’s that do not receive any newspapers these days. Dear Editor, I do not usually agree with Cranky Lizard, so it is nice to see him thinking outside the box. The economic hub is not in the CBD. The people there, who can now work from home, spend their time doing the modern equivalent of shuffling papers, so that money moves from one place to another, to make a profit. Some are planners and managers who can stay inside while others do their work, but the real workers are outside. We need them to care for our young, sick or elderly, to educate future workers, or to provide vital services like fire-fighting or construction. They are the ones who takes the risks, (which is why they belong to unions, as insurance) unless they can be replaced by machines - a risk in itself, as miners have discovered. We need to value these people - after all, we call them essential workers. The future will bring entirely new jobs for highly intelligent STEM graduates, but we need to change our attitude to those jobs which require fewer high-intelligence skills and will never disappear. Rather than using back-packers, why can’t we use our own young people? Are we teaching them to seek only jobs which require no real effort? In many countries, youth have a year or two of national service to teach them their responsibility to their community. This
does not have to be restricted to playing games for future wars which may never happen. Young people will be more willing to submit to such a scheme if it does not involve risking their lives or taking others'. Thousands of jobs are needed to care for land, the way it was for thousands of years, and who wouldn’t like to be paid for working in our beautiful bushland? There is value in this work - think of what recent fires cost us all, even if we live elsewhere. Every time we suffer a natural disaster, volunteers such as BlazeAid do the work without pay - usually when they should be enjoying retirement. All this could be done as part of National Service, by fit youngsters. The experience would teach them things about their country that they don’t learn at school, even if they prefer soft city lives. Climate change will bring a new world let’s prepare for that change. H.Beneke Dear Cranky Lizard, If you need help reading the message from David Barnes, perhaps I can help. You suggest that the people who “took a knee” and their bosses were somehow feeling guilty. They were simply showing solidarity with those who have been oppressed or even killed by white racism. The only person who feels guilt is you - hence the mirror. H.Beneke Cranky Lizard response… Dear Helen, Once again, thank you for your interest in The Local paper. Concerning your comments about people kneeling, my response is… What Nonsense! Kind Regards Cranky Lizard. “ Dear Editor In Issue 54 of your paper your staff writer Matt Owen posed the very serious question ‘Fort Bribie 75 years later. What can we do next?’ I would suggest very little for now and very little into the future! There is no doubt your paper has evoked great sentiment about its potential loss. While the writer covers many options and offers excellent solutions, the way ahead is very uncertain! If ever there was an appropriate time to get financial support to prevent further decay, the time is now. It’s ideal with a State Election imminent. I simply don’t think we can afford to wait for Fort Bribie to gain the recognition it deserves! With the State Election nearing, now is the time for someone, organization, business, or local identities to take the initiative and set-up a seminar “What is Bribie Island’s Future without Fort Bribie?” while inviting the current standing candidates. We are currently living in very tough times with the Covid Pandemic and now the worst recession since the Great Depression....There just won’t be any worthwhile funding from any source! While there are many among us who will claim no amount of money is justified to try and save Fort Bribie, I am hopeful that there are enough of us who want to see what remains, undergo some form of preservation before its claimed by ever encroaching tides. I am aware that representations have been made to politicians in the State and Federal spheres with little effect. Mr

Owen has pointed out that the current view of the State Government is that Fort Bribie was never meant to celebrate a 75th anniversary. “The structures were built for a temporary purpose.” Is it now too late to save Fort Bribie? Let us not under estimate this possible loss. The Bribie Island Second World War fortifications were a highly important part of the preparations for the defence of Australia, in particular the Moreton Bay region and the defence of Queensland’s Capital Brisbane. The fortifications are also important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of the nation’s coastal defence system, still visible on Bribie Island almost 80 years after work started on construction. The RAN 4 building at Woorim is of equal or greater historical significance, easily accessible, and could have been saved and preserved years ago for a few thousand dollars. 25 years ago Bribie Rotary did a complete restoration of the building in the public interest, and for its historical significance. I would like to see The LOCAL Island and Surrounds NEWS conduct a survey of Islanders to get the community’s views. Where to now? We have so many issues to address…In tandem with gaining commitments from politicians standing in the October State Elections, I would argue strongly for a survey to determine what Islanders think about Fort Bribie, their future and the Island? Dear Editor I wonder how many of us mere morsels would get away with parking our Winnebagos or refurbished buses on the Government owned land (ie. ours the tax payers) at the corner of Sylvan Beach Esp and Benabrow? It annoys me to no end to see the Pricilla Queen of the Desert bus belonging to Ali King, Labor’s candidate parked there every day. Those of us who have to pay for storage of our mobile vans should no longer do so as there is clearly free parking on offer courtesy of the State Government on beautiful Bribie. But let’s see how long we’d last before we get our marching orders. I wonder how much money we would have in the kitty if Ms King was charged a daily rate to occupy this land with her political messaging? Perhaps instead she should do the honourable thing and make a financial contribution to one of our NGOs for her continued use of Government (tax payer) owned land to blatantly flaunt herself in the pursuit of political gain. As a resident of the electorate I would prefer to have my name kept anonymous however I imagine I speak for many in highlighting this. Annonymous

U3A Beachmere Committee at the recent General Meeting. U3A Beachmere will continue to offer classes and workshops till the end of 2020 as their Term Four Program launches in early October. Chair, Barb Woodroffe, said the response from students had been wonderful with all classes and workshops in their Mini Term Three program full. “One of our main aims at U3A Beachmere is to combat isolation and loneliness by getting our seniors out of their homes,” Barb said. “We wanted to get our students back into U3A classes and activities and we were fortunate enough to have Tutors who were supportive. With the COVID-19 cloud hanging over the State since March this election certainly has a different feel to it. The last few days have been a nightmare for the Labor leader with outcry of stringent border controls resulting in heartache and despair, the Premier has also confessed to not being the decision maker in these cases – this has been left to the Chief Medical Officer Jeannette Young (who has explained the economic benefits of these double standards) and of course then the Premier getting into a spat with the PM and calling him out for bullying. Yikes.

(Drum roll) And the candidates are Ali King (Labor), Fiona Gaske (LNP), Richard Ogden (Greens) and Ross Konowalenko (One Nation).
We hear the format of tonight will be 8 minutes for each speaker followed by audience questions.
Here we go, speaker 1 is Richard from the Greens. First time I have seen this guy. Tall, well dressed, grey hair and glasses, touch of an English accent. “Fairness, transparency, ending corporate donations, plans for regional manufacturing, more hospital beds, problems with development in the local area”. The Greens are standing up for the environment – we have to manage development better. I like this guy. “Big business compromises Government decisions”. Richard is passionate about the environment and I believe him. But what about everything else Richard?… .”mining, big banks”, Richard is ticking the Green boxes. We have to put our foot down. 65,000 vehicles per year up the beach is irresponsible Richard and yes jet skis aren’t good for turtles, a Eco-discovery destination positioning for Bribie – liking that Richard (have you been reading my notes?) “Renewable energy, solar panels and wind turbines in QLD”, I imagine what it would be like if the Greens hold the balance of power. Kind of idealistic. I was just listening to Scott Emerson (now a radio host) on 4BC radio talking about how bad this would be but I’m a romantic at heart. Ironically this is

I’m not sure but it catches my eye. Now It is question time. Ross, Fiona, Richard and Ali. Time to shine!
Helen (audience question): Fiona to respond to cutting health staff during the previous LNP term. Fiona says we don’t want to run a smear campaign. Fiona is taking the high ground and not returning the jab from Ali. Richard now has a go at that questions: more nurses, more ICU beds, comparing our health system to Germany, yikes, that doesn’t sound good for us. Now back to Ali and then Ross. Ali: Talking about Deb making $23bn in campaign commitments, Campbell Newman references, classic scare tactics happening here. Now Ross. Lost his Mum 2 months ago where his Father was given letters of demand for each tablet his lost-wife had been given. She was 93! What is wrong with our system?
I have just been notified by event organisers that the Labor Party and One Nation candidates don’t want to be filmed or recorded even thought this is a public event. I would have thought that was part and parcel of politics in 2020. What are they worried about? So much for the rights of local media and the age of openness. Unbelievable. Just unbelievable that this happens in 2020. Not sure whether this is a party direction or the individual candidates. Alas, I have a job to do and rules to follow so here we go.
Karen Harris – President of the BANG Committe is giving us the hello and welcome so it is game on! C’mon Karen, bring out the candidates….I think Karen must know everything and everyone in Beachmere…She is lovely, and not like the Karen’s we have been hearing about in the media lately. Wow, BANG is doing some great things in the local community. Well done to all those involved at BANG.

Ali will provide more than just a bandaid solution: isn’t that what sitting member Simone Wilson said about Bribie Road and the Labor Government? Ali did say that she will have an announcement soon about Beachmere Road, I would of thought making the announcement last night would have been the perfect timing for her, not down the track.
In isolation maybe this is great to have strong border control but when you couple it with movie stars, celebrities, millionaires and AFL heavyweights entering the state under different rules it has become clear that there has never been a bigger gap between the haves and have nots.
It is 6:10pm here at BANG (Beachmere Area Network Group) and there is nervous tension in the air. It is the first time I’ve had my temperature checked in these COVID times – so a funny feeling. I’m feeling glad I had that delicious pie from the Beachmere Bakery to settle my stomach (I will now know if my wife does read my columns..). Current member Simone Wilson says Hi and we have a quick chat.

Locals who came to meet and listen to our candidates for Pumicestone. the same Scott Emerson who was the member (LNP) for Maiwar (West Brisbane) at the 2017 State Election that Ali King (Labor) ran for, a seat that the Greens won. That makes me ponder. I don’t think Politicians should simply be able to move to another seat after losing an election. It doesn’t sit right with me for some reason, or maybe there should be some kind of waiting period.
Back to Richard. “We are moving into a decade of hard times and we need to change our habits. The importance and benefits of social housing. Our vote is powerful, and we deserve better from our Government”. I agree Richard, we need more from our Government. Richard is asking for our vote. A humble man with something to offer. Kudos Richard, 1st cab off the rank and well done. Speaker 2 is Ross from One Nation. Camera off. C’mon Pauline, since when did you not like a camera?
Ross has lived around the corner for 20 years. A former Police Officer, Ross looks like a hard taskmaster. Quietly spoken. Talking about domestic violence on the increase, each of those incidences take a police officer off the street for 3 hours, did not know that. Ok lets move away from your comfort zone Ross, what about the other key issues? Now working at the Woodford Correctional Centre Ross is a man of the people. He must understand youth crime, domestic violence, was also a school teacher: shows his youth action policy. He is going deep on this issue. It is probably the reason he is running. A work ethic for our youth. I like Ross and I’m thinking he would be a great asset to the region specialising in this area. Why can’t Moreton Bay Regional Council headhunt guys like this. Maybe give him
a call after the election. You only have 8 minutes Ross and you have spent most of it on youth. I applaud you, as a Father of 3, but you haven’t addressed the key issues of our electorate. Touching on the environment, I think Ross has a bit of green in him which is good to see. This guy has something to offer our region also in youth crime. Speaker 3 is Fiona Gaske from the LNP. She has the full attention of the crowd and has started with a background story to build a connection with the audience. Talking about her working class parents, children, family and Dad loves Slim Dusty. Fiona is ready to fight for the local community. A speech pathologist by trade, experience with working with the elderly and a singer! Sat on government boards at state and federal level. Consultative representation – she is going too fast! I can’t keep up. I feel like I’m doing a job interview and the candidate is too good for the role. $10,000 for Beachmere to trial a programme for the safety of children, hooning, Beachmere Road and finally a donation to the local men’s shed. Well played. A strong round of applause and that is it for Fiona. Karen says – 3 down and 1 to go! Here we go Ali King from the Labor party. Camera off.
Speaker 4 is Ali King (Labor). Acknowledging BANG to start with. Tells us about herself. An injury to her Father meant that strong public services had helped their family through. And that is why she is here today: free healthcare, she went to university and helped the unemployed get back to work. Sister a nurse, brother a builder. I have heard previously she was a Lawyer but curiously I don’t think she mentions that tonight. Ali King focuses on the local resident’s
Jason (audience question): Is it fair for rich property developers, AFL players and movie stars to enter the country when normal people can’t attend funerals? Do you think it is fair? Well played Jason. The question the whole country is asking. Ali is looking looking sheepish. Fiona comments about: hypocrisy and double standards, inconsistent application. Richard comments: Not easy to talk about fairness. He is English, talking about his Mother in aged care overseas. They aren’t answering the question. Is it fair!!!! I think back to Alan Pease body language book and look at my posture. Did he just call Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews a hero? Ali talks about: our Chief Medical Officer is a hero and has saved lives and done a fantastic job. More scare tactics about if things were worse. Yes Jason you are my MVP for the night. NO IT ISN’T FAIR. It is the most un-Australian thing since the Trevor Chappell under-arm and if Labor lose it most likely be the game changing moment of the campaign.
Steve (audience question): to Richard: We currently get 7% royalties from gas and coal and how will renewable energy replace this? Richard handles this question the way you would expect from a Greens candidate. This feels too deep for this forum, and if I’m reading the room right, it is more concerned about local Pumicestone issues. Let’s get local. Ross steps up and explains the One Nation Policy on the Collinsville Power Station. He is taking the middle ground. “We will get to renewable energy, but it will take time.” Belinda (owner of this publication) (audience question). Local small business. is the backbone. Seaweed, fisheries, I’m not sure if this is a small local business or a government funded program on Bribie Island. I think he is talking about innovation, ok here we go, “we sell our intellectual property overseas and we shouldn’t”. That sounded like a Bob Katter interview I was editing yesterday.
Now here is Fiona. “Under Labor we have seen 9 new taxes. LNP have $100,000 committed for a buy local campaign in Pumicestone alone. I have experience in mentoring small business and LNP will support businesses into the future.” Richard comments: “how he has Chamber of Commerce experience and tells us about the Woolworths at Sandgate: we need to find out what services the community needs: oh and he used to write for a local paper elsewhere (he might take my job..): this is what we did in Sandgate”. Sounds like some useful experience. Last up: Ali: “COVID-19 adaption grants, online marketing catches my eye: Labor will pair you with a free volunteer mentor”. That would have been a good gig for a local chap like me, oh well. All candidates missed a golden opportunity here. Tourism and small business go hand in hand. How about seriously supporting our tourism operators and giving them assistance and support? Two birds with the one stone? Belinda (again) (audience question): Do you think the State Government has been fair to Pumicestone over the last 6 years: Ali: “Interesting question. $440m for the Caboolture Hospital. The best she thinks almost in QLD. Gives Simone Wilson a plug which is interesting. She sees huge big ticket things being delivered every day (would love to know what they are for Pumicestone). Ross: Talks about illicit drug use and programs to help these people. I guess that relates to a failure
from the current Government. Fiona: Highlights that the money for Bribie Road has been available for 2 years and it isn’t fair to highlight things that just start to happen before an election. Richard: “Extremely disappointed that the 4WD beach access: birds population”, he has found his paradise to protect.

the other states and you will start to understand what I mean. Where is our tourism funding that I have seen so much of in other areas?
Final thoughts. Richard and Ross. I appreciate your effort and passion and I’m sure that you have something to offer the community but unfortunately the way our political system is I think you are making up the numbers. Your preferences might play a vital role though. These are the areas that Labor and the LNP appear to struggle in. Well done to you both.
Diane (audience question): 4WD access and jet skis, she looks after turtles. How are our candidates going to protect our environment? Visitor Management Strategy being planned by Fiona Gaske that Simone Wilson has been working on. LNP commit to the process in the first 100 days. Richard: It will be gone if we don’t change it now. You would expect that passion from the Greens. But Richard you show your lack of knowledge here. There is no way you can send all the 4WD’s up the centre of the Island through White Patch. It would be like Queen Street for those residents and the safety of wildlife is an issue on that road as well. Ali: “Day trippers bring their own stuff and not spending locally. Community consultation is required, and it is an urgent matter”. Agreed, but if it is so urgent now why hasn’t it happened in the last 6 years…so frustrating…
Ali King, Labor has had 6 years in power and our community has been neglected during this time. I have no doubt about that. Too many big issues with nothing being done. Bribie Road, Beachmere Road, the 4WD Beach, our WW2 Fort Bribie being neglected, child safety, crime, local health, domestic violence, drug use, development out of control, no tourism strategy. Too many crosses and not enough ticks and this was before COVID.
Closing borders and scare tactics shouldn’t win you an election in my opinion, however different rules for the rich and famous may lose you one. Smart voters will consider the last 2 terms and Labor has dropped the ball on too many big issues in Queensland and especially in the seat of Pumicestone.
I believe this is a big issue for our area. ‘Day trippers’ come for the day, drive up the beach, jam up the roads, pollution, they might visit a café or takeaway and then they head home and jam up the road. The local economy is not supported sufficiently by these visitors. Where does the 4WD permit and camping money go? I have a lot of thoughts on local tourism (stay posted for something on this in the near future). My conclusion is that we are an ‘accidental hero’, a beachside location 1hr north of Brisbane. There is no strategic tourism strategy for Pumicestone, local tourism operators do not get enough Government support. Compare us to similar locations in

By bringing all sectors of the community together, this will reinforce the traditional Australian values of a caring, compassionate, respectful and a sharing community bonded by service to others which in turn offers a safer, bonded and stronger community as a result. Ross will also work with all levels of government and key community providers, to support and attract small and larger environmentally friendly industries and enterprises so that our employment and natural environment is sustained, while the infrastructure needed is planned for well into the future. 6 Questions for....LNP Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson before she retires from Politics!

After serving the Pumicestone community for the last 3 years, Simone Wilson will say goodbye to her role as the State Member for Pumicestone after the State Election on October 31.
1. What would you say have been some of your major achievements?
Frankly, most achievements are those that I can’t freely talk about, but I leave knowing that my electorate team and I have helped many people at their greatest time of need. Whether this be with navigating the health system, housing difficulties, where individuals did not fit the group mould and needed someone to take up the good fight for them to make their lives better. This is what I am most proud of.
I am happy that I’ve been able to secure some environmental wins for our electorate. • Securing a total ban on shellfish collection across Moreton Bay was a great outcome, not only for my electorate but more widely across the stretch from Bribie to Wynnum. The significance of it will have long term positive impacts on our coastal waterways.
• I was also very pleased to lobby the State Government for a Containers for Change recycling depot on the Island so that people who wanted to be part of this program didn’t have to take the long journey to Caboolture or Morayfield to get their refund.
• During my first month as State Member I attended Lady Flo’s funeral in Kingaroy. Then Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull was also attending and after the service I seized on the opportunity to corner him at the water bubbler. Rather brazenly I told him that if he could do anything for Pumicestone it should be to cough up some dough to upgrade Bribie Island Road as the State Government was neglecting it. A few months later Mr Turnbull visited the electorate during the Longman By-Election and saw first hand what I was on about. He made the announcement and $20 million was immediately available without conditions attached to who won the Federal seat of Longman. That was in July 2018, over two years ago now and the works have only recently commenced.
2. Tell us about the Pelicans.
Who could ever forget about the debacle involving our beloved pelicans of Bribie Bridge. I will never forget the pitted feeling in my stomach when in the early hours of one morning I discovered the light fixtures had been replaced overnight on Bribie Island Bridge and installed with metal barbs
to prevent the Pelicans from roosting.
It was surreal to me that something like this could happen without firstly any notice given to me as the State Member, and secondly with so little regard for something that the majority of our community holds so dear.
That day my office was flooded with calls and emails from locals, one being a local lady by the name of Chris Wilson (no relation) who was equally devastated by had had occurred. Over the coming days we worked together to rally the masses in protest and what a visual feat that was. Over a thousand people stood along the span of the Bribie Bridge to send a clear message to the Government that what they had done was wrong, fix it and fix it fast. Suffice to say our message was heard, albeit those terrible barbs are still in place.
3. Why are you leaving, is there any conspiracy theories at play? In a nut shell, family! But firstly it really has been a great privilege to serve the people of Pumicestone and whilst it has been one term for me, I could not have predicted having to make the decision to not recontest at the time I won the seat in 2017. Life has a way of dictating its terms!In the first few months, after narrowly winning the seat at the 2017 election, my father’s health began to decline and I knew he (and my mother) would need more support than what I was able to give them due to the demands of my job.As the next election heralds the start of four year terms in Queensland politics I had a big decision to weigh up.
4. What are you biggest regrets?
Without doubt having to deal with a Transport and Main Roads Minister who failed to put our electorate’s road infrastructure needs as a priority. We have urgent needs for upgrades to two of our major State Controlled Roads, Beachmere and Bribie Island Roads.
There is absolutely nothing on the table from the State Government to upgrade Beachmere Road. It remains a dangerous narrow road in parts with no sealed shoulders and the amount of near misses I get told about is highly disturbing. It’s not seen as a priority for the Palaszczuk Government but it is the number one priority of people who live in Beachmere and have to travel this road daily. I am glad that the LNP have recently committed $7 million to fixing the road shoulders and making the worst part of Beachmere Road safer. Locals would know I’ve been driving a major campaign to upgrade Bribie Island Road. The only new money (still to be) invested on this road is $20 million of Federal Government funding that’s been sitting in Canberra’s coffers since it was announced in July 2018. I had a hand in securing this funding and not once was I consulted by the State Government on
how it should be spent on upgrading our major road.
5. What does the future hold for Simone Wilson?
I will always stay involved with my community, that’s just a given but instead I’ll be lobbying from the sidelines on what’s needed in the area. We have a new Moreton Bay Regional Council that will set a direction that the region will take and I hope this involves a focus on our patch and supporting our future goals for the area.
I’ll also be the first one to pop the cork if and when the State Government decides to finally fully upgrade Bribie Island Road. And I will keep lobbying on improved health services, particularly access to after-hours GPs for residents of Bribie Island. On the work front, I’ve held a Real Estate licence for many years and decided to start my own Real Estate business, which will be based on the Island but not limited to a certain geographical area. It will be called Wilson and Co and will be a full service Real Estate agency.
I really love working with people and getting the best outcome for them, so this next chapter will be a pretty natural transition for me. It’s the very same fiduciary relationship that I’ve had with my electorate in that I’ve always put the best interests of people first and this will never change. I like to think I’ve built trust with people and they know me as an honest straight shooter, so I am looking forward to this next
phase. I think there’s room for a fresh new approach to selling homes and I’m pretty excited with what the future holds.
6. Do you have a parting message for the next State Member of Pumicestone?
To begin with, I hope the electorate carries over into good hands. Not too many people get to represent their communities at this level and for me it’s been a journey I will never regret nor forget. I don’t believe we can be good politicians without having a good heart in the right place. I said this in my inaugural speech and I will leave believing that my heart was firmly where it needed to be, with Pumicestone and its people. I hope the next State Member becomes the champion we need, someone that isn’t afraid of taking up the good fight and works hard to make Pumicestone an even better place to live, raise a family, run a small business, work and visit. At the end of the day that’s what we all want. I’d like to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the people of Pumicestone and of course I hope my work here is remembered with my hashtag #lovepumicestone

Dominating Dominating September headlines were border fights and decisions on quarantine exemptions in what many, including myself, viewed as lacking common sense, consistency and compassion.
Whilst I am loathed to add to the myriad commentary around the plight of young Sarah unable to attend her beloved father's funeral, it will be quite a while before the images of this young woman being ushered into the funeral place in hazmat suit to view her deceased father whilst her mother and little sister looked on from afar, will her leave our minds. September was also a month where the struggles of many of our locals facing similar circumstances to Sarah came to my attention. Who would have ever imagined that in 2020 a government that is meant to be for the people would prioritise celebrities and AFL entourages over its own citizens, the very ones who pay their dues to keep our state running! Some who have contacted me have expressed the view that what is occurring has now gone beyond any politically motivated strategy to enter us into a world akin to a psychological science fiction drama.

attend the birth on the proviso he went straight back to quarantine in Brisbane. Where on earth is the common sense here! So it is ok for him to attend a public hospital but not ok for him to go home with his wife and new child to finish his quarantine time. If we even have a sniffle we are asked to quarantine ourselves in our own home whilst we wait testing results, not in expensive accommodation in Brisbane. And like the son of an elderly local lady who recently lost her husband. Despite weeks of trying to come to Queensland to be with his mother (and many booked flights having to be cancelled) he is still trying to get here. He’s not coming from a hotspot, in fact like young Sarah, he too was travelling from an area with no known COVID19 cases but still unable to be by his ageing mum’s side at her greatest time of need. This isn’t about “bullying” the Premier as she puts it. It’s about imploring her to ensure that the officials making these decisions are getting it right and her stepping in when common sense, consistency and compassion fails. This is something the Premier has not been prepared to do yet is exactly why we
have a Government in Queensland with public sector oversight responsibilities.
It is not ok in my book for our Chief Health Officer to admit to giving special treatment to Tom Hanks and the AFL entourage because “entertainment and film bring a lot of money into this state”. Add to this the special treatment Danny Minogue received - just how she boosts Queensland's economy is anyone’s guess! These are the overt displays of inconsistency, lack of common sense and compassion that the Premier wants us to accept. Our health is indeed the most important thing - there is no disputing this. But as the leader of our State, the Premier should not be saying that no one wants to hear stories like Sarah's. Rather she should welcome these personal stories as this is exactly what the Premier and all elected representatives are paid to do - to listen to people, take on board their circumstances, then ensure the public administration is in fact acting with common sense, consistency and compassion. Mobile coverage boosted in Beachmere

People living and travelling through Beachmere will now have better phone service to make calls, browse the internet and stay connected with family and friends.
The new small cell mobile base station in Beachmere is on and will significantly improve phone service in the area. Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts the Hon Paul Fletcher MP said the new small cell base station, funded under the Mobile Black Spot Program, reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to further improving connectivity in the regions.
“This significant investment, part of the Mobile Black Spot Program, means that people living, working and travelling in Longman will now have better mobile coverage,” Mr Fletcher said.
“The first five rounds of the Mobile Black Spot Program are funding 1,229 mobile base stations around Australia, with more than 860 of these already on air and providing much needed mobile connectivity to rural and regional areas.” Minister for Regional Communications, Regional Health and Local Government Mark Coulton said the Coalition Government is committed to improving connectivity for people living in regional and rural areas.
“This Government knows how frustrating it is to be talking on the phone or browsing the internet and then lose service, so we’re getting on with the

LNP Promises an additional $20 million for Bribie Island Road if Elected
Member for Longman Terry Young said he was pleased that local residents and businesses would now have better service in the Beachmere area.
“Residents have raised the issue of poor service in Beachmere and I’m pleased to be part of a Government that is listening and delivering,” Mr Young said. “Our continued investment in mobile phone base stations is further proof of the Coalition’s commitment to connecting Australians, wherever they are, particularly in regional towns like Beachmere.”
Member for Longman Terry Young also said: “The poor phone service in the area, particularly in the Beachmere Sands community, meant residents were feeling isolated because they could not contact friends and family.
“Some were relying on a mobile signal for pacemakers which were always being interrupted and posed a serious health risk.
“I have been fighting to resolve this situation and am delighted that Telstra has now upgraded the Beachmere mobile tower. “This will ensure people in the area can stay in touch with their loved ones and access important information and services over the phone.”

A major upgrade to Bribie Island Road and design work for a new Bribie bridge have been pledged by the Liberal National Party if elected to government at next month’s elections. The upgrade would target key areas of concern, including major bottlenecks making the road much safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The work will include traffic modelling and a community consultation process to start within the first 100 days of an LNP state government. LNP leader Deb Frecklington and Pumicestone candidate, Fiona Gaske inspected notorious trouble spots including intersections, and later announced urgent funding for the Bribie Island Road of up to $20million would be a priority should the LNP win government. The upgrade would create around 60 construction jobs with priority given to local contractors. Ms Frecklington said the promised funding injection would complement the Federal coalition government’s $20million commitment to upgrade the Old Toorbul Point Road intersection –a combined investment of $40million by the LNP on improving the Bribie Island Road. In another major announcement, local LNP candidate, Fiona Gaske revealed the works package would include concept planning and detailed design work for a new bridge for Bribie. “It’s not good enough for the state labor government to simply put things on hold till the current bridge’s useful life is scheduled
to end in 2031” Fiona Gaske said. “We need to get on with planning now. Decisions need to be taken to how best to progress a new bridge . Above all, we need to involve the community to learn what they consider will serve them best. “There’s no reason why design plans and various options can’t be prepared, allowing adequate time for feed-back and proper consultation. “The existing two lane bridge was built 57 years ago and is no longer adequate for our needs. “A staggering 30,000 vehicles a day on average are using this two-laned bridge – many more during peak holiday periods. This is 50% more than ten years ago.” Fiona Gaske said a new or expanded bridge with adequate lanes and pedestrian and bikeway access was an essential part of any plan. “What we don’t want is our Bribie bridge becoming a political football with political parties and others making unachievable promises. “If elected to government, the LNP will allocate $3million to allow careful and sensible design work to be commenced which will pave the way for a range of expert and community input prior to any final construction design. “At present, just one incident or traffic accident on the bridge can result in massive congestion and delays on and off the island. Any new design for the bridge must allow for a much improved traffic flow, easier access for emergency vehicles, and must also provide for disaster management plans for the island in the event of any natural disasters requiring evacuations. “Even at this early stage, I would welcome your input on how best to implement this vital piece of infrastructure that will impact on us all. Hidden Emeralds Great for Rainy Days
The Bribie Island Sports Club at Bongaree has three hidden gems in the back room in the form of 12 by 6 foot snooker tables complete with balls, cues and electronic scoreboards. Being at the beach or in the boat is great when the weather is fine but rain and wind can drive locals and visitors to look for indoor pursuits. Snooker is a game of skill and finesse played by sharks and grifters from all walks of life. Those who have mastered the 6 by 3 or 8 by 4 tables at other establishments on the island and surrounds may get a rude shock adjusting to the large tables. In a game where millimetres make all the difference and small pockets exist at the end of large expanses of emerald green felt practice make perfect for the prospective champion. Never the less trying to outdo a mate or relative is fun and drinks and meals are close by. Best of three matches are popular and table banter is mandatory between players. Remember the sequence of the colours is God Bless

Friday afternoon is also popular but the club staff are welcoming and the patrons cheerful so give it go someday soon.

We are in the full impact phase ofpreparing the 2020 financials and tax returns for businesses. I am amazed that the GST claimed on sales or expenses is still being mis-calculated. The rule of thumb is that the net figure (without and GST0 is the same as the GST component with 1 decimal point moved to the left.
When calculating your invoice to clients, work out the invoice amount and then (if registered) add 10% to that and you have your full invoice total including the GST. This is how ther ATO request your invoices. If you wish, you can make a note of the GST component for your clients but quite separate an area from the invoice total.

Before You Start! Have a stable high backed chair for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
Let’s get started! Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. DON’T BE AFRAID TO WAVE! By Cathy McGillivray
Some people are scared of spiders, snakes or heights and those who aren’t afraid of these things may wonder why, so some of you out there may be surprised to discover that one of the most terrifying things for women over a certain age is…… singlets!
What about you? Are cute string strapped singlets your arch nemesis? Does the idea of summer and waving goodbye to your family and friends make you cringe as you visualise your floppy bits at the back of your arm still waving long after you have actually stopped. These non stop jiggly floppy bits are known by fitness professionals as the “3 Ts”…. Terrifying Triceps Tremors! (Actually, I just made that up) I’m sure by now you know that I ride a motorbike, and once spring arrives I put away the heavy leather jacket and wear a singlet and a leather vest. Yeah, I guess I should be concerned about the safety issue, but in reality I am far more aware of Triceps Tremors! If you think the top of your arm wobbles when you wave goodbye, imagine what it feels like at 100kms an hour! I have even found myself purposely changing hand position to tighten my arm when overtaking a car because, God forbid, strangers may see my triceps wobble as I pass by. Ridiculous I know, especially since 1. I have pretty tight triceps, and 2. Even young blokes with arms like Thor have flapping triceps at 100kms an hour. (Yes I have checked the young blokes out, but of course only for the purpose of research, honest!) Do the blokes care about their waving floppy bits? Of course not! Just like a lot of them don’t care that the hair on their back is longer than that on their head or that the only way they know they have feet somewhere below their belly, which happens to be resting on their knees, is
because they wear slip on boots. Do most women care – absolutely! Why? Because we have been told that we should – by men and magazines! Sadly some care so much that they don’t wear clothes that are comfortable or that they love. Of course men should care about their floppy bits too and for exactly the same reason the women should care, not because of how they look but because of their health and how good they will feel if they are healthier and fitter! I refuse to read any “womens” magazines, yes even the “fitness” ones because of the pressure they all place on how women should look. Next time you are in a magazine shop check out the front covers of some of them. I’m sure you will find that on the front of the magazines aimed at women there are toned young women smiling with tight young bodies and super white teeth telling all of us that women should look just like a 25 year old no matter what age they are. Now check out the magazines for men…. Ohhh look there are toned young women smiling with tight young bodies and super white teeth. Hang on! Where are the toned young men smiling at the blokes telling them that if they want to be happy, successful and a wonderful husband they need to look like this and wear size 28 shorts, have 8 pack abs and have biceps of the gods to hug their partners? Women are usually pressured into fitness and weight loss to “Look Good” and yes so are men, but this isn’t why you should be doing it!!!! (Yep, I’m kind of shouting) Everyone should love how they look, you are individual and unique and beautiful in your own amazing way, but you should also remember that the way your body looks and feels is a reflection of your

health, inside and out. Do you look healthy? Does your skin glow or is it dry and dull and doesn’t heal easily? Does your body support you? Can you just get up and go, or does getting up and actually going require a 10 minute internal debate on how important what you want to go and do really is? Is your fitness and health making your body a cage that locks you in, instead of being a platform that helps you reach your dreams? Age is definitely not a cage, or a reason to be restrictive in reaching your dreams, but your attitude to ageing can be. If you have decided that you want to age well, keeping your independence and mobility for as long as possible, then, like all the experts on TV and the internet , we recommend using exercise and a balanced diet to help your body remain strong and healthy. Just making few small changes to your daily activity level and how you eat can make amazing differences to your health and happiness, sometimes in ways you won’t realise, until you discover you are happily chasing your grandkids across the sand and jumping in the waves without having to stop and gasp for breath. Of course once in a while (like me) you may still think about the dreaded Triceps Tremors, but hopefully it’s only when you are cruising along in the warm summer wind at 100kms an hour, knowing that you are fit enough to do whatever you want, whenever you want, for the rest of your life.

Bribie Respite and Support Services Opens Term NDIS Respite Service and Reopens Aged Care Day Respite By Joanne Allison-Schouw, Director
Bribie Respite and Support Services is home grown having served the Bribie community for nearly 40years. We employ local people to support local people. Our team provides the best care and support we can to our fellow community members who need support and assistance to enjoy a good quality of life. A lot is happening at Bribie Respite and Support Services are range of services in both Aged Care and Disability is expanding, we now offer a large range of group based and Individual Support Services in both Aged Care and NDIS spaces. Our offices and buildings have all been renovated, we have taken over management of a home in Banksia Beach to provide overnight support for NDIS participants and have purchased extra vehicles to make transport in a COVID19 safe environment possible.
From 5th October, 2020 NDIS participants will be able to access our house in Banksia Beach for supported short term accommodation. Young People with Disability will be able to stay at the house to learn the skills they require to live an independent life while having a break from the family home. This service is booking quickly and if you are interested in some time at the house or any other NDIS services we offer we advise you to call our NDIS Coordinator Andrew as

On September 21st, 2020 our Aged Care Day Respite Service will recommence, due to COVID19 restrictions places are limited and we currently only have vacancies on a Monday. We do have some availability for In Home Social Support on Tuesdays and Thursdays at present. This service is available to those older members of our community who require assistance to attend appointments, shopping or would like some-one to come and chat or take them out for a coffee. We can also assist carers who require someone to support their loved one so they can attend appointments or have a break. After Hours Health Services for Bribie Island in 2021

The long wait for after-hours primary medical care for Bribie Island and surrounding residents will soon be over. From January 2021, residents will not have to leave the Island to access medical care due to a new three-year trial of after-hours primary care. The Australian Government is investing $500,000 for the trial. As one of the populations with the oldest average age in Australia this announcement is well received. Health is a massive local issue with the current 20km drive to the Caboolture Hospital far from ideal. Unfortunately, this is a journey that this Journalist has recently undertaken. Instead of waiting around for an ambulance I jumped in the car and drove to Caboolture – a very stressful situation and to this day I’m still not sure if I made the right choice. It is hard to make the decision – call the ambos and wait or jump in the car? Health experts will tell you to call the ambulance under certain circumstances but how long can an ambulance take to arrive? How do you know when you should call 000? It isn’t easy in the heat of the moment. It is anticipated that this announcement will take that decision out of our hands or at least make it easier. Also, you would hope it will be quicker and easier to access care compared to the process at the Caboolture emergency department. As a regular commuter along Bribie Island Road I notice the number of ambulances taking patients to the
Caboolture Hospital. With a population around 20,000 I guess this is to be expected but it does seem to be a lot. This 3 year trial can only be a good thing and it is a step in the right direction. Who knows what might happen after the 3 years? “For years, residents on the island have been calling for better access to medical services and I am delighted to announce this trial program,” Member for Longman Terry Young said. “Currently, Bribie Island locals don’t have an established after-hours health care service available through their GPs or medical deputising arrangements. “With this investment, patients won’t have to travel 20km to Caboolture Hospital for care outside normal office hours but will have access to a GP right here on Bribie Island.” “State LNP candidate for Pumicestone Fiona Gaske has been advocating strongly on behalf of Bribie Island residents for this service including organising meetings with local stakeholders. Her hard work on this issue cannot be underestimated.” The local provider will be determined through a tender process. This publication will provide updates as more details become available.

Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) have been announced as Managers of the venue and are busy co-ordinating tours and bookings. U3A Beachmere have made the Hub their new home and are already welcoming students to classes and workshops. The weekly JP Witnessing Service also now operates from the Hub, after relocating from the local shopping centre. The service offered by local Beachmere JP’s will continue to assist locals on a Saturday morning between 9am and 9.30am. The Beachmere Community Lawn Bowls Club continue to play at this location, bowling on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. BANG will use the HUB as a base from which to co-ordinate the many community activities and events they organise with the Hub featuring as the venue for the many Sesquicentenary events which have been postponed to May 2021. BANG President Karen Harris was very pleased that, after over two years of negotiations and renovations, the Hub had finally opened. “Beachmere celebrated it’s 150th Birthday this year and a great number of events were scheduled to mark our Sesquicentennial year.” “We have had to postpone nearly all those events, so to have this great local resource open for everyone to use has been wonderfrul.” But, the year is not over yet and we have been working on a few other surprises as well, which we hope will be commenced, if not finalised, in this very special year,” Karen said. World Food Day, the 16th of October, aims to not only recognise the cultural importance of food but also strives to create more sustainable food industries and provide reliable, steady food sources for those who are vulnerable. It is predicted that approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted each year. This astronomical waste of produce, if utilised correctly, could help to solve the hunger experienced by those across the world. In light of COVID-19, many people have struggled to put meals on the table, and those who were already vulnerable have been further impacted by the pandemic. It then falls upon us to take action and endeavour to make a difference. There are a number of steps that we can take in order to prevent and mitigate our own food wastage and help others. Finding new and innovative ways to
repurpose food and not waste it can help prevent the masses that we throw away. Leftover night is a quick and easy way to use up what is in the fridge. Or perhaps delve into the recipe books, exploring fun new food and stepping outside your comfort zone. It is also important to recognise those struggling. Donating to foodbanks provides support to those who need it most. If you are looking a little further from home, international charities and non-profit organisations offer means for you to provide food to those outside of our boarders.
With one of the United Nations Sustainable Goals being to eradicate world hunger, it is incredibly important that we all do our part to support those in need and reduce our own food wastage. Food is one of the most integral aspect of life, but so is compassion. This year on the 16th of October, take time to consider your contribution to the world’s wastage.
Maybe try out a new family recipe or do some research into your closet food bank. 2020 has been all about adapting and overcoming challenges, but we continuously see people’s kind acts and generous hearts. World food day, 2020, is all about creating a sustainable future for food. So dig in or donate, but it is time for some action.

Probus Visits a Great Local Winery

commenting on their lack of knowledge of the existence of the winery and voicing their intention to recommend to their friends a visit to a great local tourist attraction.
Nearly forty members of The Probus Club of Bribie Island ventured out last month on a local excursion to the Woongooroo Estate, a vineyard, cellar door and cafe located on Doyle’s Road, about halfway between Woodford and Kilcoy. Owner Phil Close turned out not only to be a sommelier, but a bush poetry aficionado, his background as a school teacher being obvious in his presentation skills. He interspersed the introduction of six locally produced wines, ranging from medium dry whites to semi-sweet and sweet red and white wines to a wonderful medium dry Cabernet Sauvignon, with some hilariously funny bush poems. Phil’s wife Gail was kept busy pouring the wines to be tasted and generally looking after her guests.
In a significantly merrier mood, club members continued on to a much anticipated lunch at Kilcoy’s Exchange Hotel, followed by a walk around the town where even a number of our ladies were spotted fossicking amongst the vast array of goods offered by the General Store. Some time also was allowed for a stroll through Kilcoy’s main park, where a wooden Yowie statue erected in the 1980s recalls sightings of this mythological creature as far back as 1842. Club members enthusiastically endorsed the outing, with many

Crack down on youth crime LNP Commitment.
Youth crime will be tackled with tough new laws and an overhaul of the state justice system if the Liberal National Party wins government at the state election on October 31. The crackdown on youth crime comes amid a growing number of offences and an alarming increase in repeat offenders. Offences have included a range of violent crimes, breaking into houses and stealing cars. A recent forum on crime and community safety on Bribie Island considered a range of local issues including measures to clamp down on hooning by young people.
LNP candidate for Pumicestone, Fiona Gaske said that while she remained very supportive of rehabilitation programs for young offenders, there was increasing frustration within the community over the way many young offenders simply thumbed their noses at police showing not the slightest remorse. “Too often, penalties handed down by the courts amounted to little more than a slap on the wrist only encouraging them to reoffend” Fiona Gaske said.
“If elected to government next month, the LNP will ensure youth offenders on bail are monitored 24/7; there would be mandatory detention for third convictions; a community payback farm program would be established to rehabilitate offenders, and youth bail houses would be scrapped.

Community News “Youth bail houses were introduced in 2017 and despite two damning reviews late last year, the Labor Government has committed to yet a further review of the program at the end of this year. “Of the 95 young people residing in the bail houses in its first 2 years of operation, 80 had re-offended at least once making the program a dismal failure.
“The LNP will remove the principle of detention as a last resort and bring back breach of bail as an offence as well as scrapping Labor’s “catch and release” bail laws” Fiona Gaske said. If elected to Government, the LNP says sweeping changes will be made to Labor’s broken justice system. Officers of the Department of Youth Justice would be required to provide round the clock monitoring of youth offenders on bail, or on supervised and conditional release orders. This will make the Department more accountable and free up the heavy work load of police. Fiona Gaske praised the support provided by police but said their frustrations were apparent when having to catch the same offenders time and time again. “There must be serious consequences for young repeat offenders” she said.
The LNP will introduce a trial of 5 Community Payback Farms for young offenders who have been through youth detention. The approach will focus on learning new skills, improving self-discipline, teaching offenders to take ownership of their actions, and provide opportunities to give something back through some form of community service.
It will be up to the court to decide which youths should spend time at the farm, but the focus will be on repeat offenders.
Blitz on unlicensed electrical work and bogus advertising
The Queensland Government is stepping up its blitz on unlicensed operators advertising through online marketplaces like AirTasker to do home electrical tasks illegally. The compliance blitz came ahead of Electrical Safety Week, which begins today.
Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the Electrical Safety Office’s (ESO) crackdown on unlicensed services being advertised and illegal work being done has led to a raft of enforcement action. “We are doing everything we can to stamp out these dangerous practices and when breaches occur, we are coming down hard,” Ms Grace said.
“It doesn’t matter whether you are falsely advertising, performing unlicensed work or engaging unlicensed operators — it’s illegal and downright dangerous. “In just over three months ESO inspectors have issued 75 statutory notices for offences such as noncompliant advertising by a licensed contractor and failure to hold an electrical contractor or electrical work licence.”
Ms Grace said there are also a number of matters being investigated for potential prosecution. “The ESO investigations team is
finalising four briefs of evidence for referral to the state’s independent Work Health and Safety Prosecutor, with an additional seven investigations currently on hand with a view to submission for prosecution” she said. “These matters relate to unlicensed electrical contracting and failure to comply with improvement notices.” ESO inspectors recently executed a search warrant on a premise in South East Queensland as part of an investigation into allegations of unlicensed electrical work.
In addition, an injunction application was lodged in the Brisbane Magistrates Court to prevent a company from contracting for electrical work.
“People doing unlicensed electrical work don’t have the knowledge or competence to ensure it is compliant with installation standards, or to ultimately test the work to make sure it’s electrically safe,” Ms Grace said. “Unsafe work means greater risk of shock which could end up in serious injury or death, as well as fire and property damage.”
Earlier this year, a Queensland concreting business and its sole director were fined $42,500 for unsafe and unlicensed electrical practices. In a separate matter, an individual was charged with nine offences relating to unlicensed electrical work and unlicensed electrical contracting and was fined $100,000. Those caught doing electrical work without a licence in Queensland will always face on the spot fines and possible prosecution.

Domestic Violence Call Over at Caboolture Courthouse

Caboolture Courthouse is known as the house of pain particularly on Thursdays as this is when all Domestic Violence (DV) matters are heard. As this court takes in Bribie and surrounds it is worth knowing how it all works and what is happening in our community on DV. Local men’s support volunteers report a constant flow of cases from our area and refer many men to the Men Choosing Change program for offenders to try to reverse this trend. The Centre Against Domestic Abuse CADA workers focus on the victims and assist them cope with the many problems associated with abuse such as homelessness, financial stress, legal issues and mental and physical health. Both groups see the effects of drugs such as ICE in the community causing family break up and violence. PTSD also contributes as well as poverty and family history of abuse warping what some see as normal in domestic relationships. A typical DV Thursday at the court sees a full waiting room (COVID rules apply) by 830 am waiting their 9am appearance before the Magistrate. Unaware that everyone in the room has been summoned at the same time they think they’ll be home for morning smoko. That’s the first shock as they realise they could easily be waiting till 3 pm for their case to be called. Quick call to work to cry off sick adds to the anxiety and stress. A list of people wanting to see the duty lawyer is drawn up by DV volunteers and workers and information brochures are distributed to the waiting clients. As they emerge from their 20 minute free consultation by the lawyers the realisation that the Police will not drop the matter even if they have reconciled sets in.
Police call names to establish who has turned up and who have not (they are deal with “ex parte” in their absence and it usually doesn’t go well). Those who are present are told by Police not to ask for the matter to be dropped as the answer will be no, not to ask if they can duck out for a smoke or coffee (see ex parte above for answer) and not to eye ball or approach the other party in the waiting room. Security guards check for weapons or other contraband and generally handle the trouble makers, the bad and the mad. Support workers comfort the anxious, hungry, homeless, addicted and angry and give advice on local social services. Finally their names are called and they go in with their lawyer if they want one or alone if not. Support workers advise them where to stand, to turn their phone off, take their sunnies off their head and refrain from calling the judge “mate” or even on occasion “your majesty”. Your Honour is the go and interrupting is not advisable but happens regularly. Hard truths are told to perpetrators, orders are made protecting victims including for good behaviour, staying away from people, premises and not locating or communicating on the internet or by other means. These
orders normally last 5 years and breaking the order results in fines and or prison. The complexities include visitation with children, recovery of property, ownership of premises and family occasions like birthdays and Christmas. Orders can accommodate these where appropriate by way of a text or email from the victim allowing access which can be revoked by another text or email. All types of people are affected, young, old, heterosexual and homosexual couples, fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, sisters and brothers as conflict happens at all these levels. The definition of DV is broad and even includes damaging your own property in front of others or shouting within earshot of children exposing them to DV. Volunteers hear all sorts of stories and meet all sorts from ex bank robbers to bikies to silly young blokes who can’t handle the drink or drugs. Trying to help them all equally is a challenge and can sometimes be unappreciated but one man changing his ways means one less life destroyed by DV and often many more. Some of the worst cases involved harm or attempted harm to children,
attempted murder, murder and torture both physically and mentally. Social isolation and financial dependence are some of the controlling behaviour used by the abuser. Fear, control and blame is their MO. In 2007, 17% of women and 5.3% of men surveyed reported experiencing violence by a partner. Only around 36% of women who have been physically assaulted report the assault to Police. Indigenous statistics indicate they are 4.6 times more likely to experience domestic violence than their nonindigenous counterparts. In 2006/7, 22% of all homicides in Australia were intimate partner homicides equalling 71 homicides that year. Only 43% of intimate partner homicides have a family violence history involving Police prior to the homicide. There are particular times that increase the risk of intimate partner violence and these include during pregnancy and during the separation processes. Women generally are more at risk of violence in their home than in any other setting in society. Common reasons victims of domestic violence return to a violent relationship include financial reasons, social isolation, community backlash, children’s needs, love for the perpetrator, lack of alternatives and lack of knowledge about options. In 2021-22 the estimated annual economic cost of family violence in Australia will be $3.9B. Look out for signs of this behaviour amongst friends and relatives and don’t turn a blind eye to DV.

A pop-up food van with an Asian inspired twist!
An obsession with all cuisines Asian from Korea to Indonesia, China to Vietnam and a passion for creativity and fresh produce has resulted in the birth of Bribie’s newest food business, House of Jade. After three years of planning, the eye catching jade coloured van is currently “popping up” on the waterfront at Sylvan Beach where local owner Andie is serving up Asian inspired cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a modern twist. “The support and feedback from locals has been amazing and I have many customers returning every week to our pop ups without fail”. Andie, who has a background in social work and continues to work within the sector, found being creative in the kitchen along with passion for feeding people was a very successful way to relax after work. I love to put a spin on the classic Asian dishes we all know and love by adding freshness and combining complimentary flavours from different regions across Asia. “I really enjoy seeing people try new ingredients and step outside their comfort zone when it comes to food”. Preferring to use as much seasonal, local produce as possible as well as supplying most of the vegetables and herbs straight from her organic kitchen garden you can expect to see menu items such as Roast duck, Cheddar, Spinach Omelette with Hoisin Glaze for breakfast, Crispy Tapioca Crusted Salt and Szechuan Pepper Calamari with

After all, all the cooking I do never actually feels like work as I love it so much”. When asked where to from here? Andie is abuzz with ideas. “I would like to expand into private and corporate catering in the near future and dream about one day writing a cookbook and hosting cooking classes particularly with youth who sadly today are swiftly turning into young adults who cannot prepare a basic nutritional meal for their household.

“Not only has it helped us to develop training and eResources, we’ve also employed a cyberbullying consultant to provide advice to communities across Queensland,” Ms Adams said.
“Parentline has also developed training for all our counsellors so we can deliver parent and carer support by phone, web chat or email.
“We know cyberbullying is as insidious and as it is prevalent.
“The Premier has urged social media platforms to be part of the solution and work harder to help create a safer online environment.
“No one wants their child to be the victim of cyberbullying, nor the instigator of cruel, nasty and harmful online behaviour,” Ms Farmer said.
“It’s distressing that more than half of young Australians report they’ve experienced psychological distress from cyberbullying on social media and online chat sites.
“But, social media platforms and easily to use privacy settings are just one part of the picture; parents and carers also owe it to their children to keep them safe in cyberspace. “As a parent myself, I know how hard it can be to have the conversations we should have with our teenagers about cyber safety and appropriate online behaviour.
“That’s where online cyberbullying training and eResources from Parentline and yourtown can help to arm parents and carers with the information you need to know about internet bullies and how they operate.”

Economic Recovery Plan for Queensland – LNP Commitment We all hope that the worst of the spreading corona virus here may soon be over.
Thank you for responding so positively to the LNP plans to provide free off-peak travel on local trains for all seniors. It means that if the LNP wins government next month, all Seniors card holders will be able to travel free during off-peak times on the city train network which includes Caboolture and extends from Gympie to the Gold Coast and out to Ipswich.
Everyone has been affected in some way – some more seriously than others – and even if a vaccine can be produced, our lifestyles may never be the same. The number of casualties from this awful pandemic is declining, but my thoughts are now focussing on the huge recovery phase and the challenges we face. My biggest fear in the months and even years ahead is for jobs and the economy in general. There are so many heartbreaking stories of small businesses, many of them “Mum and Dad” investments that have already left families in ruin. Some are hanging on through direct Federal Government funding but that can’t last forever and for many, it’s sadly just stalling the inevitable. With those closures come devastating job losses. Queensland already has the unenviable record of the worst unemployment rate in the country and the highest number of long-term unemployed. It’s painful to report that 234,000 Queenslanders are out of work. Closer to home, Caboolture’s youth unemployment is among the worst in the country and, without some action, these statistics will only worsen as the pandemic takes its toll.

For absolutely cynical, poll-driven reasons, the Australian Labor party have determined that they can win an election by poncing about in front of the media, being strong! Being strong means shutting the borders between States in the Commonwealth using the fearmongering tactics of “ I am doing this for you – to keep you safe. I don’t want to do it, but I have too because I am strong! “ Cranky Lizard has had a look at the remote border checkpoints – Police huddled around fires on frosty bush nights, lines of witches hats, winking reflectively, leading to a marquee with some soldiers and uniformed Police doing what must be an arduous duty. So why run the deceit?

and the union mates deal with the hotel quarantine inflicted this disaster on Victorians. It is surprising to Cranky Lizard that so many Melburnians have meekly accepted their confinement in their stalinesque tower blocks. They seem like battery chooks, eating from Government troughs, chirping in their little hutches, but what kind of life is that? And, more to the point, who delivered this upon them? Their own bloody Government – that is who!

Cranky Lizard asks why not one Federal Government and electorally responsible, large, regional Local Governments? A discussion for another day.
We know about our fellow Australians living in border communities that have to live with mad, anger boiling frustrations from tin badge bureaucrats about taking their children to school down the street and crossing a State Border in doing so. Cranky Lizard asks you; Is this the mindless nonsense that defines our respect form our fellow citizens?
Of course, it is not and, in regular times, it would never be an issue in our lives. So why is it now?
Because COVID-19 is a virus you can catch from picking your nose, you can catch it from picking up an unguarded cucumber in a supermarket; you can catch it from touching a petrol pump nozzle; you can catch it from an unguarded moment with your lover [ buggah!].
And, fundamental to that is the font of the gimlet-eyed, grasping bureaucratic power: it is the public health brigade’s pestilential dream.
This bastard virus kills people; we don’t know enough about it, in a general non-clinical sense, to understand why. We know that we should respect it as a deadly virus that can hurt us; but, can it wipe us out?
Doubt it?
Cranky Lizard suggests that in the end run, this bastard of a virus will be less of a threat to our way of life in this country than the untrammelled power clutched to the breasts of various State Premiers in their cynical purpose to be re-elected in the guise of saving us. Remember the Mother, who lost her twin child. Remember her and the young life that never flourished.
In the years to come; the debate on the relevance of the States will intensify. The harsh light of reality will fall on the flaccid processes of State Governments and why they may be no longer relevant to the Commonwealth of Australia. In the meantime – Cranky Lizard notes that life is good, there is plenty of it about. And, in closing, Cranky Lizard states, unambiguously, that kneeling by free people in this country in some act of virtue signalling contrition for some wrongs committed by persons in another time and another place in this country is virtue signalling nonsense.

Beachmere’s Sesuicentenary Celebrations may have been delayed, but the recent opening of the Beachmere Hub allowed the many commemorative gifts to be revealed and presented. A number of groups have been working on various projects including the U3A Quilting group which made a Commemorative Quilt. Quilters Chris Sutton and Di Newell were on hand as it was unveiled by the Lord Mayor, Peter Flannery and Councillor Division 2, Mark Booth. Chris Sutton says that, as with all quilts, the colours, fabrics and patterns in this quilt have meaning. “They pay respect to the Traditional custodians of the land and recognise that their history in Beachmere is far longer than the past 150 years. It pays homage to Beachmere as a rich and diverse natural environment of air land and sea and the glorious wildlife that co-exists with us, making this a unique and beautiful place to live. The fabrics of the quilt symbolise Beachmere’s position at the mouth of the Caboolture River, blue for the river and the bay and gold for the sandy ground. Four indigenous print turtles stand guard at the top of the quilt, and others swim through the blocks, symbolising respect for the traditional owners and recognition of Beachmere as Gubbi Gubbi country. The central block represents the
development of the town over the past 150 years. It reminds us that water is the source of life and for 150 years all roads have met at Beachmere at the site of our windmill and water tower, which act as a beacon bringing us home. If you look to each side of this block, you will see two needle lace pictures; the dairymaid representing the early industry of Beachmere and the fisher representing the continuity of fishing as a pastime. The remaining blocks pay homage to Beachmere as a rich and diverse natural environment of air land and sea and the glorious wildlife that co-exists with us, making this a unique and beautiful place to live.” Local artist, teacher and organiser of the Beachmere Mosaic Club, Helen Riley, presented two large terracotta pots: one features the Bungwall Fern, indigenous to the local area, with the other displaying mangroves. The Beachmere Men’s Shed presented a lecturn, made by local Men’s Shed member, Harry Ellis, made from a great number of pieces of different timber species. The compilation of local stories, Beachmere – Then and Now, has also been a great success with much interest from locals and expats who are discovering all about the wonderful bayside village. The quilt, pots and lecturn will be on display at the Beachmere Hub, Main Street, Beachmere.

Soils ain’t Soils ®
Well it has been a while since I wrote an article on my -Soils ain’t Soils- topic, so I thought now with the change of the seasons and especially now that spring has arrived it would be a good time to reiterate some helpful hints on improving our soils here on Bribie Island and local districts once again before the onslaught of summer. I have mentioned previously in other articles, the importance of soil building, which is a continuous process of adding composted organic matter (compost, leaf litter, vermicompost or manures) while managing to keep adequate soil moisture in the soil profile and protecting the job lot with cover layer of mulch - whenever possible. But there are definitely challenges to overcome which may prove difficult in the landscape, as the individual landscape design and subsequent various plant choices may need different soil types or moisture requirements in comparison to the plants which are growing naturally which are endemic to the area and have adapted to the local environmental conditions. These plants have evolved over millennia to adapt and survive drought conditions in our poor sandy soils and have specialised root systems accordingly. If we were to create a rainforest garden, this type of design will obviously require more irrigation with a serious focus on actual soil improvement with the aim to establish a pioneer planting canopy which provides a microclimate underneath with filtered light and offering protection from the harsh elements. In time, this will allow for successful understorey planting with subtropical colour and delicate ferns. The same of course for when planting an orchard or vegetable garden as the more resilient your trees and crops are (hydrated with a healthy nourished root system tapped into a plethora of soil microorganisms that work in a symbiotic relationship to thrive and survive together) the more ability they will have to withstand the tough environmental hot, windy and dry conditions that may dry most plants to a cinder in summer. So it always comes back to the soil preparation and building the appropriate soil for the plant species you intend to plant.

Pericallis x hybrida- Senetti ® Collection
The beautiful Senetti® range, consist of a collection of Pericallis hybrids bred by Suntory Flowers in Japan. Senetti® are essentially small evergreen free flowering plants cross bred from Pericallis cruentus and P. lanata. Senetti® is also trademarked and used as their marketing name. They come in array of gorgeous colours with spectacular variations from light blue to magenta, lavender, deep blue, white, bicolour and a glorious salmon coloured hybrid with a purple wash. Before reclassification, Senetti®- was known as Cineraria x hybrid, but these new varieties are much more robust. They are marketed in Australia under licence by commercial growers and are easily sourced from retail nurseries. The main difference from the traditional seed grown Senecio, syn. Cineraria, is their hardiness, their compact bun shape, their vigorous display of masses of large spectacular coloured daisy flowers, they are considered more of a perennial due to the fact you can cut them back after flowering to stimulate a second flush. Senetti® grows to 30cm H to 40cm W and usually flower in winter through to spring. They grow well in pots and tubs and in the garden, they look great planted enmasse. Keep an eye out at your local nursery for the any of the Senetti® Collection - this spring.
clumping soil unless there is enough moisture added to the mix to start the process. I poured some potting mix into a wheel barrow and threw in a bucket full of my own specially blended rock dusts: Fertil8-gold ® and mixed it around and grabbed a hand full of the mixed media and threw it in the air behind me - and as it all blew away on this windy morning, I went on to explain that “without moisture, fertilisers, compost and soil microorganisms - will be of little benefit”. So we need to keep the soil moist in the beginning to encourage the plants roots to take up the space. The trick is to keep the balance in check and provide the right soil requirements for your intending planting needs and mulch to conserve water. Also make sure your mulch allows moisture to penetrate through to the soil profile as these plants may exist in these conditions - but not thrive. Naturally occurring endemic species such as Grevillea and Banksia or Lomandra species tend to thrive on neglect, are drought tolerant and bring in the local wild life. But our Kangaroos love our special tasty succulent - non endemic landscape plants, it’s like pavlova to them! -Your Local Happy Horticulturist!

windy weather in this first week of spring ensured winter had not quite left us, but spring is definitely in the air now and I am looking forward to the warmer temps ahead. There are lots of dragonflies, butterflies and lizards hanging around the gardens locally (mine included), which is great to witness. I even had a bizarre visit of a black prince cicada last week. I was leaving a property after a maintenance visit at Banksia Beach and heading for Woorim and noticed the cicada sitting on my bullbar facing me, the first thing I thought of when I spotted the little fella was, it’s a bit early for cicadas is it not? And then I thought, hope its ok - and as I continued driving down past the cemetery it turned itself around facing the oncoming wind like a mascot on a car bonnet. After pulling up at my next scheduled property visit, the cicada flew off and flew around me and over to the trees chirping away and back over me again, I swear it was the only one I could hear, hope he found a mate, I felt privileged indeed!
Now back in the patch, our broccolini is still powering along but some of them have gone to flower, which we let go for the bees to feed on. I was going to start culling some plants to make room in the garden, but they are still producing well. The beauty of the broccolini plants is you can plant 10 to 12 plants close together and not worry about the excessive growth competition like the large leaved varieties, they have been reliable and trouble free, you can plant these in large pots in the cooler months if you haven’t got the ground space, but you will need to give them at least 6 hours of sunlight. Spring planting in the subtropics generally consists of planting beans, capsicum, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, sweet corn, silverbeet, sweet potato, watermelon and zucchini, cucumber, tomato, eggplant and Asian greens. Care is needed when watering your tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkin, and cucumber as to not wet the foliage and if the leaves do get wet, hopefully it’s in the morning - so the sun can dry the leaves, otherwise the dreaded powdery mildew on cucurbits or bacterial and fungal diseases on tomato will decimate your crop. We are trying a new variety of cucumber this spring called- Beit Alpha, thin skinned sweet flesh and popular in the Mediterranean. We usually get hit with hungry insects as the weather warms, so it might be good to invest in a fine cloth net if you do not have the time to attend to your plants. Most citrus are producing new flowers and buds so try not to over water them as they can drop their flowers as quick as they were formed. Citrus leaf miner is a continued pest and preventative applications of eco-oil sprayed on both sides of leaves will assist some of the new soft leaves from being attacked, as the more leaves that can grow to full size - the better health of the trees will be and as a result optimum photosynthesis means - better quality and tastier fruits in the end.

Slow down and care for Bribie’s wildlife Bribie island and surrounds is very lucky to have wildlife living in our midst. One of the great advantages of not living in a city like Brisbane is that these creatures are amongst us all the time and we must respect them to keep it that way. Unfortunately there are many instances of kangaroos and wallabies being hit by cars particularly along Sunderland Drive and Pacific Harbour. One kangaroo death left a joey alone which had to be taken to Australia Zoo to be looked after. The Sunshine Coast Council and the University of the Sunshine Coast began a small trial of virtual road fencing in August 2018, and with community support it has since expanded across the region. The virtual fencing is based on European technology, and includes a device attached to a pole by the side of the road. The device is triggered by vehicle headlights and emits a buzzing sound and flashing light to warn nearby wildlife of approaching vehicles. Locals say since it was introduced at Mudjimba in January, they had not seen one dead kangaroo. A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said the monitoring of all trial sites was "still in progress" and would be reviewed later this year. This is something that the Moreton Bay Council should consider on Bribie.
Jetski and propeller strikes are also common in the passage affecting turtles and a dolphin died last week after being tangled in a crab pot rope. This was despite the best efforts of the SeaWorld team who visited the passage to try to save the animal. The range of wildlife on and around the island is huge including sea eagles, pelicans, dolphins, dugongs, turtles, whales, wallabies, kangaroos, monitor lizards, snakes, and all the little critters needed to support the food chain. A large proportion of the island is National Park and it’s amazing there is a mainland bridge and suburbs right next to this facility. If Bribie as a concept was proposed today it would be rejected on environmental grounds and economic grounds also given the infrastructure cost of supporting a relatively small population. If we all want things to stay the way they are we should make an extra effort to protect our environment including the wildlife otherwise the long arm of the government may decide we need to be regulated even more. Hard to imagine but that’s the trend. Don’t allow this to happen we are able to self manage this problem by slowing down and avoiding these animals leaving them to enjoy life in peace. Then when we cross paths with animals safely we can remain thankful they are our neighbours.

SEPTEMBER Fishing Report Well we’re into Spring and probably through most of the blustery winds, although they can still come up and blow away the chance of a good day’s fishing. Most of the strong winds this month have come from the SE, which shoot straight up the Passage, so fishing the creeks has been a great option.

Fortunately, the flathead like the creeks at this time of year, too. With the breeding season soon underway, there’s a good chance of finding quality flathead. The big females are generally feeding up, in and around the creek mouths, and the males are gathering as well. This year has been one of the best flathead seasons for a long time – consistent reports of over 70 cm hookups and plenty of fat 50-60cm beauties brought in.
Fishability Qld have been taking their crews up to a favourite spot, just north of the Ningi Creek marker and have come back with some fantastic flathead over the past month. Jack and Josh also did well a couple of weeks ago, both scoring flathead while trolling lures at the mouth of Ningi. Soft plastics would have to be the most popular plan for chasing flathead lately, but using lures requires technique- keep the movement realistic and try drifting rather than being at anchor – and remember, get that landing net ready before you start to lift your catch from the water!
Flathead have been fishing well in the Passage, too. Over the top of the tide, try the banks in the middle of the Passage, using lures. During the falling tide, sit at the draining end of a gutter. This is where using live bait is best, but ganghooked pilchards are doing the job too – that’s what a 68cm flathead took at the first green marker south of the bridge. Josh and Mel tried some night-fishing near Buckley’s Hole and caught a 63cm flathead (..well, I think Mel just stayed in the car, with a good book..).
All that being said, Spring is always a tricky time for fishing. Everything is starting to move into summer conditions, but it’s not there – yet. Between-seasons fishing is often less about skill and more about luck. Richard and Dean will testify to that – they just came in while I’m writing this report, having caught nothing but under-sized flathead and one sting-ray. “Just used $30 of live worms -all for nothing!”

There are some pretty wonderful things that can happen while you’re out fishing, and it’s not always about landing the “big catch”. A friend, Judy from Beachmere, rings in with a fishing report from time to time; but this last call, she was especially excited. She had been fishing from the beach, at the bottom of her yard, when “close inshore on the low tide, no further out than my crabpot”, she saw an almost fully-grown whale passing through – at Beachmere! It rolled and blew and flipped its tail – and moved on. She managed to get her husband out to see it too, so people wouldn’t think she was crazy!

There’s been better news on other fronts: bream have been hanging out under the bridge, as is usual this time of year. Using pillies, just after the top of the tide, might catch you one. Whiting have been taking live worms and freshlypumped yabbies south of the bridge, along the shore from Sandstone Point and past Godwin Beach.
With the westerlies almost blown out, the tailor season is pretty much over – although this year, it never really seemed to get started. The reports were sporadic and a little disappointing. Rod was out at Moreton Island in early September - after tailor, but none to be found; he said even the professional netters were bringing very little in. There was an occasional ray of light – one crew bagged 26 of them at dusk, out at the third green marker, near Cook’s Rocks – using pilchards, of course.
School mackerel have been more plentiful, with good catches around the bridge, as well as in the Passage. Cameron caught lots of them on the drift past the Avon wreck, mostly undersized but some good ones among them. Please Note: This is a long contribution – it has been divided into two parts. This Part One. Nobody wants to speak about it -forgotten over time, people are frightened to speak up, although many feel that something isn't right!
I'm referring to our Australian Culture! Let's be a big fan of correcting facts and pulling together as a Nation -"We Are One". “Shirley Downs passed away peacefully at Kilcoy Hospital on the 7th September aged 86 years. Shirley lived on Bribie for over 45 years and was a well known member of the community. Lovingly remembered by Neva & Peter, Nathan, grandson Michael, the Bigg and Jacks families. Private cremation by request. Please raise a glass to celebrate Shirley’s life on Saturday 3rd October at 5.00pm.”
Our original European settlements began with convicts, who, in the majority of cases, were convicted for stealing as little as a bread loaf to survive. They were then transported, by sailing ship, for months, in tiny spaces in the lowest part of the vessel. They could be waist-deep in water, no sunlight, poor sanitary conditions and little food. Those who survived were prisoners in the newly claimed British Penal Colony where they were oppressed by the soldiers. Those brave men fought for their Nation under the Australian Flag, which specific brainless, ignorant individuals decided to burn and should have been fined heavily for this criminal act! Yet again, similar ill-informed people refusing to stand for the National Anthem, the word "fair" being given a different meaning entirely. Never heard of a "fair go for all" (Australians voted in a referendum for that) "Fair Dinkum!" Yet they consider themselves "Australians".
Droughts, bushfires and flooding rains, as the poem says, had to be endured to build this Nation. The determined, "Aussie" spirit coming from this no doubt! Our Australian explorers who perished; the Aussie Cattlemen who mustered cattle and drove the longest trails across Australia (Recall Chips Rafferty's Movie -"The Overlanders".) Then our school book "We of the Never Never".
Then we have Australia Day on the 26th of January-It began as a celebration for emancipated convicts who started our Aussie Nation, then evolved as an Australia which our Nation's diverse people. Australia Day marks the anniversary of the 1778 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, and the Union Jack was raised; so began the new British Colony.
Remember the mateship of the Aussie fellows with their long trek starting from Gilgandra in 1915 -Famous "Coo-ees" marched to Sydney, recruiting more and more as they went to fight for their Country in WWl. So many wonderful stories of our past. Apparently, the entire lot has been obliterated from the pages of our history - Not a mention in our schools anymore! We should hang our heads in shame!
So tell me from whence does the stolen country from First People by Aussies originate?
Then came the wars, where brave men and women gave their lives believing that all Aussies, no matter what colour of skin or creed, could live and enjoy a safe country. One only has to see the rows of white crosses in the Adelaide River Memorial Cemetery -so many young people, so many grieving mothers and so many grandchildren that never were.
A particular Prime Minister said "sorry" in good faith, meant for the hardships of the past suffered by the first people…..end of
