Misled again The recent headline “Desalination Plant back on the agenda again” is quite misleading. It was never off the agenda.

SEQ Water has been banging on for years about the future need for a desalination plant and Bribie Island has always been one of SEQ Water’s location options.

In the 2009 state elections, the LNP ran on a platform of a desalination plant on Bribie powered with renewable energy.

Both those ideas are just absurd. Now would be a good time for the LNP to take that proposal off its platform.

The government has recently announced that a desalination plant costing $5 billion - $8 billion is its chosen option to meet future needs. In ‘question time’ on October 11 the Minister for Water was asked to rule out Bribie Island as a possible site, but he chose not to do that. This is difficult to understand given the vehement statements since then by various ministers that Bribie Island has been ruled out.

Will sanity prevail in this decision-making process? Why has an extremely expensive option like a desalination plant been chosen when more cost-effective options are available? Where will it be located?

Why is Bribie even being discussed as an option?

Your feedback will help shape the area’s future transport system.

Remember that if you don’t do the survey you are in no position to whinge at a later stage.

A pie-in-the-sky Today, we had another letter from your anonymous correspondent, proposing pie-in-the-sky. That is, the abolition of all but the federal government.

This time he did reveal that he is a Mexican, who has yet to display any pride for the wonderful state which he has decided to call home. It is time he became a Queenslander and learned to relax.

It is obvious he has never before moved out of his favourite city. I once lived in Armidale, a mere 500km from Sydney, yet I voted against the proposed state of New England, because it would have had to include Newcastle - the N in NSW. The PM may not in future come from Sydney. We have been honoured to have some great leaders from other parts of Australia in the past, (e.g. Kevin Rudd, Joseph Lyons and John Curtin) and hopefully will again.

Imagine how deprived you would feel if you lived in Broome and the PM didn’t know a thing about your lifestyle. Especially if you were forced into daylight saving, even though you are living just 18º from the Equator, instead of 34º.

A single centralised government may seem feasible in this age of the internet. But even if you can see and talk to someone thousands of kilometres away, that doesn’t mean you know what it is like to live there or understand the differences between city and country people, this is a big diverse country. Centralisation would never work - which is why most of us, like your correspondent, have no love for Canberra.

The mob are baying for blood – again. Discontent with the referendum defeat, they now attack the humble Gecko. They claim to champion free speech, individual rights and freedoms, so long as it’s THEIR ‘speech and freedoms’. They claim the higher moral ground, while attacking anyone who dares to voice opposition.

It’s now the Constitution, proven over 100 years, attacked. They have nothing to replace it with, just ideology. They say the Constitution is outdated, written by colonials with a British background.

Who do these ‘scholars’ think should/ could have written it; ‘Airbus Albo’? They say Aboriginal peoples and women have been left out. But it has been adequately amended to reflect democratic ideals for all Australians.

When the left doesn’t agree with something, they claim its wrong. Practicality, logic and facts are things they can’t handle. There wouldn’t be an Australia without our Constitution. It’s not perfect but that’s why we can amend it, should the people desire, which we have done on occasions.

The thought of these ideological zealots re-writing our foundation document is scary. The pomposity of these people, who believe they know better, is the best indictment of their ideology and beliefs.

Rather than attack our forefathers, they should be grateful that those people built Continued on Page 7

That’s right folks we’re in the midst of the silly season once again. It seems to come around faster every year or maybe I’m just getting older and time is whizzing by.

Either way, it is right around the corner and the jolly guy in the red suit is getting his sleigh ready for the big trip! Have you been naughty or nice? Is your name on the good or bad list this year? Only time will tell on that one!

It’s no secret that the meaning of Christmas is not the same for everyone.

Traditionally a Christian celebration, the name ‘Christmas’ comes from ‘the Mass of Christ’. These days, Christmas is celebrated around the world, by multiple cultures and religions, but the reasons may differ.

Christmas means different things to everyone. For little kids (and some big kids), it can be about Santa and the presents they receive. For some, it’s just another day on the calendar as they go about their daily routine. For others, it’s about enjoying food, drinks and exchanging gifts with the ones they love the most. And to many more it’s a day for paying respect within the religious chapter of their lives. For many, it’s some combination of all of the above. Christmas can also be an extremely lonely time for some in the community who may not have family close by. If you know someone on their own and you can spare some time for them this Christmas, make your presence their present for the day.

Christmas also tends to be a time for tradition to seep in. Many families have their own special way of marking this time of the year. It begs the question; how do you spend Christmas? Is it a big lunch or

to be “Santa’s” favourite this year.

Laughing at the terrible Christmas cracker jokes - There’s not a Chrissy gathering in the whole of Australia that doesn’t feature an elderly relative wearing a flimsy paper crown who thinks the height of comedic sophistication is ‘What do you get when you cross Santa with a duck?

A Christmas quacker’ or ‘What is the best Christmas present? A broken drum, you just can’t beat it’. Insert cheesy laughter here!

• Eating ham for days - Boxing Day brekky? Ham on toast. Boxing Day lunch? Ham sandwich. Boxing Day dinner? Ham and cheese toastie, with a side of ham, plus ham for dessert.

Proceed to repeat for days. If you’re not still polishing off the last of your leftovers well into the New Year, you didn’t get enough ham to last the season!

• Watching the Boxing Day Test Eating your body weight in leftover ham isn’t Australia’s only beloved pastime on December 26, there’s also a whole day of cricket to watch on the telly. If you aren’t keen to watch them and you’re still in celebration mode, why not play out your own backyard test instead!

No doubt there are plenty more Christmas traditions out there and if you haven’t yet started any, there’s no better time than the present (yep, couldn’t resist one last Christmas pun!).

Mia Bribie Island A broken constitution With the proposed visit by our new King and Camilla next year, I’m reminded that, despite what people like Eric Abetz say, our constitution IS broken.

Did you know that our parliamentarians and military swear allegiance to the King and his heirs and successors, but not to Australia, the Australian people or their best interests, or even the laws and Constitution of Australia? That needs to change.

King Charles has expressed bewilderment about why Australians haven’t yet broken the ties with the monarchy, even though most Australians believe in equality and a fair go for all. So it is time we had a 21st century constitution, not one tied to the prejudices of the 18th century.

We need a representative at world events who is chosen by the Australian people, has our interests at heart and will back our sporting teams, not a foreigner born into the job and really only true to his own country, not ours.

Doors open on $352.9 million clinical services building at Caboolture Hospital A new clinical services building has officially been opened at Caboolture Hospital with the redevelopment set to provide an additional 130 beds for the region. The opening of the new building forms part of the $399.5 million Caboolture Hospital redevelopment, which is aiming to modernise and expand facilities to meet the growing needs of the community.

The new five-storey building will house an expanded emergency department for the region, as well as a palliative care unit, intensive care unit, operating theatres and stage one recovery spaces, cardiac care unit, a specialised chest pain assessment unit, two medical wards and space for a future 20 bed rehabilitation unit.

The new building was officially unveiled

by Minister for Health Shannon Fentiman and deputy premier Steven Miles.

Mr Miles highlighted how fast the City of Moreton Bay was growing, along with the importance of free healthcare services to keep pace with the needs of residents.

“The planned community of Warraba in Caboolture West will be home to 70,000 people and this hospital expansion will ensure they have access to tertiary health care close to home,” Mr Miles said.

“Together with the satellite hospitals at Bribie, Caboolture and Kallangur and expansions at Redcliffe, we are delivering on services that matter to locals.”

Ms Fentiman said the new building was a gamechanger for the rapidly growing community, with an expanded emergency department and specialised services opening just in time for Christmas.

“A new palliative care unit and geriatric evaluation and management unit will provide increased access to services right here in Caboolture, supporting some of our most complex patient cohorts closer to home,” Ms Fentiman said. “Our existing workforce will be joined by new staff, with 283 full time equivalent positions across a range of services to support the care needs of this growing community.”

Caboolture Hospital acting executive director Adjunct Professor Alanna Geary is

excited to see all the changes taking place at the hospital and is looking forward to patients and staff being able to use the new space.

“A much larger and innovative emergency department is expected to open in December, which will further increase capacity at our hospital and provide additional care spaces for those in need,” Adjunct Professor Geary said. “This redevelopment will include 130 new beds at the hospital, meanwhile the targeted refurbishment of the existing hospital will commence in early 2024 and will include an enhanced and expanded special care nursery, new medical day stay unit, expanded medical records facility, plus expansions for pharmacy and pathology.”

Another disappointing year for Queenslanders

For those of us who reside on the Sunshine Coast and northern Moreton Bay, we truly hoped 2023 would be a better year. That the Palaszczuk Labor Government would finally start listening and address the health, housing, crime and cost of living crises gripping our state.

But we end the year disappointed and worse off than ever before.

And we’ve seen again, that Labor will do and say anything before an election to cling to power. They’re more concerned about their own political future than the future and livelihood of Queenslanders.

Let me use three examples.

BRIBIE ISLAND ROAD In the May 2021 budget, the Federal Coalition Government announced a $10 million contribution towards the Bribie Island Road upgrades between Hickey Road and King John Creek. Let me point out, Bribie Island Road is 100% a state road - the

Feds didn’t need to chip in. But because of the strong advocacy of the Member for Longman, my friend Terry Young, they did.

Instead of being grateful, what did we hear from the Member for Pumicestone? Nothing but complaints that funding wouldn’t arrive until the 2023/24 financial year.

Roll forward to January 2022 and we have the now Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, announcing that an Albanese Government will fast-track funding. I quote: Under an Albanese Labor Government, I will get straight to work delivering this project now, not years down the line.

And that announcement was lauded by the Member for Pumicestone.

Remember what I said about saying and doing anything in the lead up to the election?

We are nearly halfway through the 2023/24 financial year…has the project been

finished? No, it hasn’t even started!

In April 2023, that same Catherine King announced a review of the Infrastructure Pipeline – those projects the federal government had committed to funding.

Just this month, Catherine King announced the outcome of that so-called “90-day review”. Sure, the project hasn’t been cut in the same way the Mooloolah River Interchange was, but will it start this financial year? Nope.

In fact, they’re only rolling out $1 million of the $10 million to do the planning. The planning hasn’t even started.

This is a clear broken promise for Labor’s election commitment. They’ll do and say anything to win an election, because they’re more focused on their own political future than the future and livelihood of Queenslanders.

The people of Bribie Island were promised a ‘hospital’ by the Member for Pumicestone, but instead they are getting a multi-purpose medical centre, with no emergency department, no 24-hour care, no overnight beds and very limited services. The promised Bribie Island satellite ‘hospital’ is little more than a clinic.

Again, the Member for Pumicestone and the Palaszczuk Labor Government will do and say anything to win an election because they’re more focused on their own political future than the future and livelihood of Queenslanders.

BRIBIE DESALINATION PLANT Which brings me to Labor’s desalination plant plan. Thanks to the people of Bribie Island, you’ve forced the government to rule out the Island as the site for Southeast Queensland’s desalination plant (at least until after the election).

But have you noticed the language – it doesn’t rule out Sandstone Point, Ningi, Beachmere, Toorbul and Donnybrook.

The Member for Pumicestone may well say – she “will never allow a desalination plant on Bribie Island”, but just remember her track record on Bribie Island Road and the Bribie Satellite Hospital.

The Member for Pumicestone and the Palaszczuk Labor Government will do and say anything to win an election because they’re more focused on their own political future than the future and livelihood of Queenslanders.

The only way you get the roads you desperately need, the health services you deserve and the assurance no desalination plant will be built on Bribie or in the Pumicestone electorate is to show Labor the door in ’24.

And, most importantly, we all come under the same umbrella of rules, benefits and respect.

Now, on a lighter note, the following has come to Gecko’s attention.

The Australian Prime Minister will travel to Australia in the first half of next year, it has been confirmed. It will be the first visit by an Australian leader to Australia since late 2022.

A spokesperson for Mr Albanese, affectionately known as Airbus Albo, said the PM always enjoyed travelling to Australia.

“Mr Albanese has a real affinity with Australia – he grew up there (in a housing commission flat with his single parent mother), he spent some time working

issues and hopefully work towards some agreements.”

Airbus Albo (aka Albanese Overseasy) needs to focus on our cost of living, housing policy and the reduction in immigration so we can actually house our own people and stop giving away our ‘hard earned’ to countries that don’t need it. Probably a good idea to reduce the focus on climate change, renewables and ‘the Voice’ as well.

Here are some facts for the climate change fanatics to get their head around.

Coal Plants Worldwide: EU has 468 plants and is building 27 more; Turkey has 56 plants and is building 93 more; South Africa has 79 plants and is building 24 more;

India has 589 plants and is building 446 more; Philippines has 19 plants and is building 60 more; South Korea has 58 plants and is building 26 more; Japan has 90 plants and is building 45 more; China has 2363 plants and is building 1171 more; Australia is planning to shut down its 6 remaining plants to save the world.

When you consider Australia’s carbon output is about 1% ….. are we really saving the planet or have we been brainwashed by the climate fanatics? And remember carbon is a critical part of our existence because without carbon this planet would not exist as a life source. Life on Earth would not be possible without carbon.

Currently, renewables such as wind, solar and hydro cannot provide the power we need. Coal fired power stations are a must until renewables can support our power needs. The cost of renewables is astronomical and is being funded by government. If renewables are the panacea of our power needs, how come our power costs have become so expensive and cost of living skyrocketed?

Now, we have to dig all these metals out of the ground to actually manufacture solar panels, wind turbines, etc. Then we need a lot of power to manufacture the associated product so we can build all these solar farms and wind turbines. And guess what …. we need a lot of base power to do that ……. from coal fired power generation! The wind and the sun cannot do that …. not yet anyway and unlikely in the next decade.

The world is realising that coal fired power stations are a must. Germany is restarting coal fired power stations to provide more energy security and it is not the only European nation to do so. The UK has restarted some coal fired power stations

to cope with the rising demand for more power.

Australia has the cleanest coal in the world, but that is useless if the governments stop mining. Why is Australia a rich country ….. because it has an abundance of resources that the rest of the world desires. Our economy is floundering because of untenable policies. This needs to change and maybe, just maybe, commonsense will prevail.

I always remember waking early on Christmas morning with excitement for the day ahead. One of Dad’s socks lying at the foot of the bed - a heavyweight chocked full of small goodies. An orange pushed down to the foot of the sock, wrapped Macintosh lollies, maybe a small book and a matchbox toy, playing cards and maybe one or two other Christmas goodies. None of the gigantic, oversized sacks that many kids seem to have today.

Life was very simple then. Even though money was scarce, I remember a home filled with love. We attended church with Dad dressed in a suit and tie, Mum in her Sunday best, my sister in a pushchair and my brother and I smartly dressed in heavy-weight grey woollen shorts, knee-length socks, a jumper and tie—the church choir dressed in blue cassocks and white surplices alongside magnificent flower arrangements - lots of formality.

Christmas had arrived and All Saints Ngaio in Wellington was filled with eager churchgoers. This was early post-war New Zealand, a different time.

After church we would rush home to sit around the Christmas tree and exchange presents. The presents were simple, no flashy toys, mainly clothes or a book. I still remember the smell of the pine from the tree and the efforts made to decorate it.

These were the days of the Sunday roast, yet I remember we ate chicken as a treat, not turkey and we didn’t then have a ham. Instead, Mum used to add small pork sausages wrapped in bacon to the meal with bread sauce and roast veggies. We used to fight over the wishbone and look forward to Mum’s homemade Christmas pudding and tarts. On the sideboard sat a white, traditional, heavily iced Christmas cake including marzipan, which we cut at teatime. And at the appointed time, we all stopped, gathering around the radio to listen to the Queen’s message.

Yes, Christmas was simple yet very special with so much appreciation for Dad being home. He was a manufacturer’s representative agent who was away six weeks at a time travelling the length and breadth of New Zealand – at a time when many of the roads were gravel, with his car swung on board the inter-island ferry to travel to the South Island.

Holidays then, as we know them today, were rare, yet with Dad away, we used to stay on a rural property at Manukau, then a couple of hours north of Wellington and help pick raspberries and catch whitebait.

By the time I had reached 12, I remember life being significantly better; we had moved to Auckland and Dad had a new job running an aluminium company. He had brought a boat, a small 12-foot open dingy with a seagull and every

Dad had brought this giant old canvas tent with its heavy wooden poles and pegs, a far cry from the lightweight camping of today. This would all be piled into the back of the boat with the seagull, heavy pots and pans, ground sheets and sleeping bags. Then, we four kids with Mum and Dad would all pile into the car, the kids squabbling in the back seat as we travelled for hours to some remote part of New Zealand to camp right on the beach. No facilities and no camp fees. It was idyllic, the sun, the fresh air, the clear water and sandy beaches for swimming, fishing and snorkelling. Until it rained and a fine light mist would come through the canvas, everything became damp and we would be out digging trenches and being stuck inside playing Monopoly and cards. Yes, that was our Christmas, our holidays. I wouldn’t change a thing.

It built a strong, close, loving family.

Tragic turn of events at beach gathering The family of the young man rescued from the sand at Woorim on December 2 confirmed last Thursday afternoon he had passed away in hospital.

The man, named as 23-year-old Josh Taylor, was with friends at the beach on the northern end of the Island where he fell head first into a hole and became trapped underneath the sand.

It is believed the hole had been dug to roast a pig, when Josh has fallen in and the sand caved in on top of him.

While it remains unclear exactly how long Josh was trapped underneath the sand, he was unresponsive when pulled free by rescuers and was given CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene. Queensland paramedics and an RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter were called in to help, landing on the beach to deliver a critical care doctor and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) flight paramedic as close to the scene as possible. The aeromedical crew joined QAS paramedics, Queensland Police Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Service officers who had all responded to the incident. Josh was flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

A GoFundMe page organised by Georgia Hoffman last week had raised more than $62,000 for the Taylor family after only two days. It described Josh as “a vibrant and adventurous

soul who has brought so much joy to those around him”.

His family made the difficult decision to turn off Josh’s life support five days after the incident, saying his injuries were too severe to overcome.

“He fought as hard as he could and is the most courageous person we will ever know,” the family said in a statement. “He was the best son, brother, boyfriend and mate we could all have wished for.

“We love you Josh and will miss you every minute of every day.

“Goodbye mate, until we see each other again.”

Detectives from Caboolture Criminal Investigation Branch continue to conduct further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and believe there may be numerous people who were present and are yet to speak with police.

Officers are appealing to those people, as well as anyone who may have dash-camera footage from the northern end of Bribie Island on Saturday December 2 to come forward.

TO BRIBIE ISLAND LOCALS Dear Bribie locals Together with our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Queensland Labor Government have completely ruled out Bribie Island as a potential site for a future desalination plant.

As your local MP, I will never allow a desalination plant on Bribie Island.

Bribie is completely unsuited to a modern desalination plant. We are too far away from the water grid and couldn’t supply the electricity desalination would need.

There is no plan for desal on Bribie and there won’t be with me as your local member.

The fearmongering from the LNP and Member for Glass House is completely unacceptable and upsetting for locals who are distressed about this misinformation being spread.

His own community must be asking why he’s spending his time spreading misinformation on Bribie rather than delivering for Glass House.

My focus is on delivering the services we need here on Bribie, like our Satellite Hospital which I have recently announced will provide chemotherapy services.

I am also currently running a Transport Study for our community, the first step to better local services.

While the LNP are busy spreading lies and promoting fear, I’ll continue to do my job as your local MP and deliver for Bribie Island.

Tallulah returns to the ocean off Bribie While her team of proud carers watched on, Tallulah – an endangered female loggerhead turtle - inched her way back towards the ocean when she was released at Red Beach on November 16. The release of the rescued and rehabilitated Tallulah was a collaborative effort between SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium and Australia Zoo. Found stranded on mud flats, Tallulah, suffering from floating syndrome and in poor condition underwent initial care at Australia Zoo, where their expert veterinary team dedicated three months to her recovery. Tallulah was then transferred to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast for the final stages of her recovery, before being given the green light for release by the veterinarians.

“It's an amazing feeling to witness Tallulah returning to the ocean today,” senior aquarist at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Laura Casserly said. “This achievement marks a significant milestone for us, with our facility caring for 39 turtles this year and emphasises the importance of collaborative efforts such as this one with Australia Zoo to safeguard these remarkable creatures.”

Tallulah’s release at Red Beach takes the number of turtles cared for at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast this year to 39 adults and 129 hatchlings, a significant milestone for the in-house Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.

Last year was one of the most significant for the aquarium’s Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, with 74 adult and 44 hatchlings being cared for by the team throughout 2022.

Loggerhead turtles are one of the larger sea turtle species weighing between 68 to 181 kilograms with a carapace (shell) length of up to 107cm. They inhabit diverse ocean environments, favouring coastal waters and open seas, undertaking extensive migrations between feeding grounds and nesting beaches, spanning thousands of miles. Loggerheads play a vital role in marine ecosystems by regulating prey populations. Classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), loggerheads face threats like habitat loss, pollution, bycatch and climate change, emphasising the urgency of their conservation for global ocean biodiversity and balance.

Blind Bats thrash the mayor’s cricket team at the all-inclusive sports day

With all the excitement of a major cricket match at the Gabba, two local ‘beep cricket’ teams were centre stage at the recent Mayor’s Inclusive Sports Day. The two teams played about two years ago, with the mayor keen to score a win, having been previously beaten by the Blind Bats cricket team. A lot was at stake as the teams played for the Moreton Bay Shield.

The Mayor’s XI, led by Mayor Peter Flannery, comprised a selection of local councillors, local council staff and guests. Opposing them was the All-Ability Bats cricket team, with players of unique ability and some volunteers who have no disability. Leading the Bats was Blind Bats Inc. president Paul Szep, himself blind and others with varying abilities. They were supported by local international cricket legend Ian Healy and Member for Longman Terry Young. The day was about having fun and inclusivity regardless of disability or ability. They sure had fun. After about two hours of play, the All-Ability Bats cricket team was declared the winner, scoring 9/92, with the Mayor’s XI all out for 43.

It was all action on the pitch with the Blind Bats fielding.

Just before play, the winning Blind Bats cricket team with Australian cricketer Ian Healy and federal Member for Longman Terry Young.

Beep cricket has its own set of rules. Played on a shorter green and smaller oval, bowlers' bowl underarm to ensure player safety and use an innovative beeping cricket ball, enabling players with impaired vision to hear the ball coming. The beep cricket ball is another City of Moreton Bay success story, invented

by Paul Szep, designed and manufactured here in Queensland with massive international interest in the ball for cricket and other sports.

Held at the Devine Court Complex, the new home of Blind Bats Inc., the grounds were superb despite the dry conditions. Other sports played on the day included hockey, netball, soccer, softball and touch football.

The Blind Bats Sports Club pulled the day together with the support of the City of Moreton Bay Council and many volunteers. The mayor acknowledged the club's hard work in getting the grounds in such great shape for the day and encouraged everyone to get involved.

“We want people of all abilities to be involved in our local communities because it is fair for people to have a go, to be included and inclusive. So, it is great to be able to support this,” he said.

Residents raise concerns at the Sharing the joy of Christmas through festive colouring contest proposed Cosmos Park upgrades

Two Bribie Island students have been named among the winners in Member for Longman Terry Young’s Christmas card colouring competition.

The annual Christmas card competition, which invites local primary schools to participate in a festive-themed colouring contest, has exceeded expectations this year with an impressive 1550 entries pouring in from enthusiastic young artists.

The Caboolture Artisans Guild was tasked with selecting the standout entries to be featured on Mr Young's official Christmas cards.

students who clinched the top spots in the competition: First Place Winners: • Savannah from Bribie Island State School • Arabella from Mount Mee State School Second Place Winners: • Allira from Elimbah State School • Lovetta from Narangba Valley State School Third Place Winners: • Ben from Banksia Beach State School • Abigail from St Michael's College The first-place winners were treated to a classroom pizza party, accompanied by a Toyworld voucher and a certificate. Their artwork, along with the winning entries, will be featured on Mr Young’s Christmas card which will be distributed throughout the Longman electorate this December.

All students that entered received their artwork recreated as personalised gift tags to put on Christmas presents and the bragging rights to say, "I made that!!"

The Christmas card competition helps with the student’s creativity, a little bit of fun and spreading the joy of giving during the holiday season.

By Alistair Gray Residents may know that the City of Moreton Bay plans to upgrade the Cosmos Park at Banksia Beach into a district regional park.

The park currently caters for several users: the Bribie Island Croquet Club, Solander Lake Bowls Club, an off-leash dog area and a large, grassed park area that is generally unused. A concept plan was produced with the community invited to comment.

A petition is being presented to Councillor Brooke Savige by concerned residents Yvonne Bishop and Tony Longland, with more than 332 signatures collected.

Looking objectively, how does the council notify residents when seeking feedback on a proposal? Is a month adequate time for proper consultation? If the council relies on a notice on its website, in the newspaper or on social media, its message may not get through. The only effective

way is a personal letter, email or flyer to each residence. I am not sure if the council has done this. However, if you are a resident who didn’t know about these changes, now is the time to communicate your concerns to your local Councillor Brooke Savige.

In summary, the proposed changes include• Relocating the off-leash dog area; • Adding four new pickleball courts, basketball hoop and outdoor fitness equipment; • New accessible pathways; • New picnic shelters, seating and shade tree planting; and • Improvements to drainage.

• Some of the concerns raised by residents include• Inadequate shelters and shade, particularly in the off-leash dog area; • Poor use of space; • Environmental issues around sustainability, biodiversity, not providing habitats for pollinators and not considering natural drainage solutions; • No extra toilet facilities; • Inadequate parking; • Moving the dog park will make it difficult for older people and their access to toilet facilities; and • Unhappiness with the consultation process.

Many of the concerns raised are valid and need proper consideration by the council. It is important residents feel their concerns are heard and understood as part of the process. For now, I am getting the impression they don’t feel this way and perhaps the process needs review.

Yep that dreaded…ahem I mean welcome…time of the year where kids are on the hunt for entertainment and parents just want to keep them occupied as much as possible. A celebration of giving

Terry Young and the Morayfield State School team with their food hampers to help others in the community.

Combining a collection of food and the opportunity to help others in need is a

long-standing tradition for Morayfield State School.

Each year during Term 4, the school community comes together to create food hampers as part of their commitment to build stronger relationships within the local community.

Member for Longman Terry Young, an advocate for school chaplaincy, visited the school to be a part of the “celebration of giving” with the school chaplain Melisa, deputy principal Amy Honsa, principal Rebecca Jones and the Morayfield State School team.

Terry congratulated and thanked the school on their strong commitment to giving and the selfless act of caring for those in need, especially in the lead-up to Christmas.

Christmas lights compliance for tenants and landlords

Who doesn't love Christmas? It's always fun conducting routine inspections in the lead up to the festive season. You can admire the Christmas trees and get the opportunity to wish your tenants a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

When it comes to decorating for the festive season, nobody wants to be considered a Grinch. The lessor/agent cannot interfere with a tenant's reasonable peace, comfort and privacy in using the premises (as per the GTA Standard Term 19(3)). As the agent acting for the owner however, we do need to be mindful of the tenant's obligations and determine if their actions could impact our client's property or the tenancy.

It would be helpful to provide the following information to your tenants.

This will ensure they don't unwittingly breach their tenancy agreement, upset their neighbours, or cause a fire or safety hazard in the Lessor's property.

1. Obtain necessary permission: Sections 207 and 208 of the RTRA Act requires tenants seek the owners/agents written permission if they intend to physically attach decorations to any part of the owner's property. This could be by way of nails, glue, screws or other means.

If the property is part of a Body Corporate there may be a requirement to obtain Body Corporate permission for lights on balconies and the exterior of the unit. Depending on the Body Corporate, by-laws may restrict quantity, location, type, colour and times lights can be turned on. Tenants should be advised of any requirements specific to their Body

Corporate By-Laws.

2. Be mindful of decoration materials: When choosing decorations, tenants should consider LED lights which are low heat and less likely to leave residual marks, although variables in relation to materials and placement will impact on this. Tenants may decide to wrap instead of attach lights around parts of the owner's property and should be aware they will be responsible for the cost of repairing any damage caused by the lights at the end of the tenancy, in accordance with section 188 (4) of the RTRA Act. 3. Quiet enjoyment: Not everyone is on the same page about celebrating Christmas cheer, and some neighbours may complain about bright and or coloured lights flashing into their windows late at night. While it's generally not considered unreasonable to celebrate Christmas with lights, tenants should remain conscious of the impact on residents living nearby by considering the brightness, frequency and duration of their lights. This will minimise possible neighbour disputes in relation to Section 184 of the RTRA Act. 4.Health and Safety: Remind tenants to remain safety conscious. Share fire and electrical safety tips to help protect the client's property and keep tenants safe.

The Queensland Government's Electrical Safety Office provides some great practical tips which you may like to pass on to your tenants.

Kathy La Fauce – A story of courage, determination and success

Kathy La Fauce proudly shows off her 2023 Ironman Championship Medal.

By Alistair Gray Some of you may know Kathy La Fauce; she is that friendly, unassuming, smiling face who often greets you at the Bribie Island swimming pool watching over you as a lifeguard to ensure you are safe. Yet, Kathy is someone special: a high achiever and an international sportswoman with incredible qualities who has been fighting back after a severe bicycle accident and went on to compete in the 2023 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

This is her story.

Kathy or Doctor Kathy, a research scientist, was dared by a colleague to compete in the Townsville triathlon festival just after completing her PhD or postdoctoral studies. Until that point, she had only ever taken part in the council running festival, but nothing serious. She didn’t even have a bike or any of the gear. After entering the triathlon and purchasing a bike, her

Kathy is working hard on her 180km bike ride. interest in triathlons took off.

She didn’t have a coach, training by herself for years, entering smaller distance races depending on work commitments. Being involved in scientific research she never really had the opportunity because there was always weekend work, being on call and things like that. Kathy herself even said, “how can you train seriously when you can’t go out for a seven-hour bike ride?” In other words, she never had a personal life.

Kathy did more than 11 years of scientific fieldwork, graduating from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Veterinary Sciences and earned her PhD. Her PhD was on aquatic pathobiology, studying diseases of aquatic organisms and vaccine development for aquaculture. She worked with North Queensland prawn farmers and then in Tasmania on vaccine development for the salmon industry. Other roles included working as a policy officer for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; as deputy manager and science officer with the Heron Island Research Station working with turtles and as a hatchery technician for the Gladstone Water Board. After moving to

Kathy emerging from the 3.8km swim Tasmania, she decided she wanted to give her sporting interest a real go, giving up her old life of long hours and research for lifestyle.

“I wanted to concentrate on my hobbies and interests rather than other areas of science,” she said.

Kathy found a coach in Tasmania and started training for the half-distance Ironman 70.3km. Then tragedy struck at Easter time in 2022 here on Bribie when Kathy was hit by a car while training on her bike, suffering severe head trauma and concussion. Kathy said she had to change everything she did in everyday life to reduce the effects of the symptoms by getting to know what she could and could not do and how to minimise the adverse effects of her concussion. Unfortunately, the challenges are still not over, with no guarantees she will return to her former self. She said it was about being determined to move forward and not giving up.

When Kathy started recovering from the injuries, her coach asked her how she felt about doing a full Ironman. The plan was always to start training for the full Ironman after the completion of the race she had been training for when she was hit. With sheer determination Kathy trained hard, competing in the Cairns Ironman competition in June, qualifying for the World Championships in Hawaii.

Shock kicked in upon realising there wasn’t much time between June and October when the World Championships were run.

“The race was such an amazing experience, being in the nation's parade and behind the Australian flag, calling out Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. The experience was surreal,” Kathy said.

The race was more remarkable, being the first-ever female World Ironman Championship with 2097 starters. Kathy finished the course in just over 13 hours and placed at 1271; a super achievement for this 40-year-old. Ironman competitors must complete a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride and a 42.2km (marathon) run within 16.5 hours.

Kathy is building a personal training business focusing on NDIS clients, but also providing Yoga therapy for kids, tackling mental health issues, anxiety and stress, bed wetting, exercise and hormone regulation for females.

Kathy is a super role model to us all, particularly those struggling with a disability or other issues. She wanted to pass on this message: “Don’t give up. Just have the focus and strive to do it. You can find a way around whatever you are dealing with. If I had said no; that would be too hard; I can’t deal with this anymore, I wouldn’t have experienced what I have today.”

How do you get your news? In 2023, the answers received expand well past the seven o’clock news or the newspaper. For many, social media platforms, informational accounts or trending topics, even TikTok, are all forms of media people utilise to receive their news and stay informed in this ever-changing, fast-paced world. This evolving form of media is undoubtedly beneficial in a manner of different ways, allowing a level of connectiveness and conversation that has and continues to be, crucial to how we interact and how media develops both domestically and globally. However, this level of access and ability to share does have detrimental impacts, specifically on our understanding and conceptualisation of complex issues.

Make no mistake, social media has allowed for the further freedom of speech and expression and continues to foster increased awareness of important social issues. Nevertheless, issues continue to arise surrounding misinformation and desensitisation.

It seems dystopian that we live in a world where one post on a feed is about foreign conflicts and human rights crises and the next a shopping advertisement or comedic video. Together, desensitisation towards such issues paired with misinformation creates a destructive duo.

Looking at today’s social, political and global climate there is so many differing sources, perspectives and information surrounding such complex issues. With so many sources and individuals sharing their personal opinions online, it can be difficult in certain circumstances to ascertain what is fact, what is an opinion and what is false. Recent conversations regarding these issues can centre around the platforms themselves and whether they are contributing

enough to preventing the spread of misinformation. Whilst these platforms and companies certainly hold a responsibility to ensure the spread of misinformation is minimised, education and awareness regarding the topic is equally important.

Understanding general media bias is crucial in determining how businesses, bias and billionaires impact the stories and perspectives portrayed and shared by the media. Applying the same skills and critical thinking to social media is of equal, if not more, importance. However, unlike news channels and newspapers, distinguishing external impacting factors and misinformation remains increasing difficult. As AI (artificial intelligence) continues to progress and the world becomes even further entwined, we have to ask whether we are doing enough to support internet illiteracy and education surrounding social media. Until this point, many of us have not grown up with social media or the accessibility to online sources that the future generations will have access to. Thus, we must question whether we are properly equipping not only ourselves but also our next generations with the tools to navigate social media and their ability to conceptualise complex issues without solely relying on a singular source.

Social media is so crucial in raising awareness and understanding about intricate, multifaceted social, political and worldly issues. It allows for conversation, debate and education. It can also create hate, misinformation and misunderstanding. We must remember the benefits of these platforms, whilst understanding the important perspectives alternative sources also provide. We must remain critical and not complacent.

Lifting the weight of success

Levi Davidson competes in the U15 Olympic Weightlifting National Championships in Perth.

How heavy can you lift? If you’re anything like Bribie’s Levi Davidson, you’re well on your way to becoming a champ. Levi was just nine-years-old when he began his journey in the world of weightlifting. In his very first competition Levi lifted an 18kg snatch and a 22kg clean and jerk. Fast forward to 2023 and at the age of 15, Levi has nabbed first place in the U15 Olympic Weightlifting National Championships in Perth lifting a 75kg snatch and a 100kg clean and jerk at just 75kg body weight.

It’s not every day you come across a youngster who is dedicated to a sport like weightlifting, but Levi is fully invested in the domain and already has big plans for the future. He currently trains three days a week for 1.5 hours per session, runs 5km two mornings each week, uses the gym at his school (St Columban’s) and trains five days a week at CrossFit Bribie Island. The draw card of weightlifting being a fun sport and the added bonus of being coached by his aunt was the reasoning behind Levi’s foray into weightlifting.

“I like to see my numbers go up and hit heavy weight,” Levi says of what draws him in to loving the sport that has become a big part of his life. “I want to compete in as many competitions as I can and gain experience in all situations.”

With his recent win in Perth still

fresh in his mind, Levi also hopes to one day go to the Olympics.

“It feels really great because I feel like my training has paid off,” Levi says of his win in Perth. “Eventually my goal is to hit the elite total for the body weight category I end up in.”

Levi’s win in Perth has also been highly commended by the Queensland team coach Leanne Knox.

“Levi displayed excellent control of both his technique and competition mindset at Nationals and broke his personal bests, being a fantastic asset to the Queensland Weightlifting team,” she says.

While he gains some inspiration from weightlifting competitions he watches on YouTube, what else goes through Levi’s head before he attempts a lift?

“Whatever my coach has told me I need to do or to not let the bar go before the buzzer,” he says.

Levi’s aunt and head coach at Bribie Island Weightlifting Club, Jade Sharp is a former weightlifter herself. She enjoys being able to coach others in the sport and helping them achieve their own goals. Watching Levi find his own success, especially most recently in Perth, has shown Jade exactly why she continues to be a part of the weightlifting arena.

“As a coach, I’m so happy with his dedication and commitment to training,”

she says. “We focus on the notion that consistency over time leads to success and Levi has certainly proven that over the years. As an aunty, I’m so just proud of him and so happy for him.”

Not only is she a proud coach and aunt, but Jade is the founder of the Bribie Island Weightlifting Club, which currently has about 20 members.

It used to be a part of my commercial business and I turned the weightlifting aspect of my business into a not-for-profit club with the help of some great volunteers including my Mum (Levi’s Nanna) Maree Davidson,” Jade says. “I did this so that the community will have the sport and club, long after I’m gone.

“Weightlifting is an overlooked sport, especially for youth. There was an old myth that weightlifting had negative effects on youth physical development and some people still believe this, however this has been disproven though sports science research many times and it’s shown to be very advantageous for all athletes to be using weightlifting as part of their athletic development, including gymnastics!”

So, what is it about weightlifting that makes it stand out from other sports?

“In weightlifting, it's not about the flashiest gear or cutting-edge facilities; weightlifters often thrive in modest settings, training in small

sheds with ageing equipment,” Jade says. “Success in weightlifting is about the athlete who embraces the grind, over years, over decades. The grind is repetition, heavy weight, bad days, hot sheds, work, school, training, recover, repeat. It’s a tough sport but a sport that challenges and changes people for the better.”

With great support from the City of Moreton Bay Council, in particular Councillor Brooke Savige, Bribie Island Weightlifting Club now has their own shed to train out of at the AFL grounds on the Island.

“One day a week (because we are growing!) we also train at CrossFit Bribie Island,” Jade says. “They are great supporters of our club, who allow us to use their space for training and competitions (fee free).”

The unveiling of a piece of history As a descendant of Bongaree, Dr Sharlene Leroy-Dyer took a few moments to recognise the work of everyone involved in bringing the statue to life.

Dark clouds may have hovered above, but the shine couldn’t be removed from a very special event taking place outside the Bribie Island Seaside Museum on November 28. It was a moment, a long time in the making, the unveiling of a historic statue – Bongaree (also known as Bungaree), Matthew Flinders and his cat Trim.

“It’s been a long journey to get to this point and there has been lots of consultation along the way,” Dr Leroy-Dyer said. “It’s really wonderful to see Bungaree (who you may know as Bongaree) actually acknowledged in this way, because he was a great man who assisted colonisers to colonise our country – there really is no other way of putting it. But he did what he had to do for he and his family to survive. And in doing that, he did great things.”

Situated near the spot where Flinders and Bongaree first landed on July 16, 1799, the unique sculpture is a vision that was brought to life thanks to the Bribie Island Historical Society to commemorate the significant moment in history. There are many memorials around the world dedicated to Flinders, but this is the first time his friend and Aboriginal guide Bongaree has been publicly recognised. The sculpture was created by Derek Patey and his wife Sonia (you may also remember the soldiers Derek created ahead of Anzac Day) with great support and endorsement from family descendants of Bongaree and local representatives, with assistance from Busy Fingers and the City of Moreton Bay Council.

A man heavily invested in the history of Bribie Island is none other than the Bribie Island Historical Society president Barry Clark. Having lived on the Island now for 20 years after retiring here from Sydney, Mr Clark has spent much of his time discovering everything there is to know about Bribie. He has written many articles about Bongaree the man and knew it was time for him to receive proper recognition for everything he had achieved.

For Derek and Sonia, the unveiling of the piece is the first time they have seen the sculpture together as one and not a work-in-progress. Months of effort, rolls upon rolls of chicken wire, many pairs of gloves, wire cutters and even Dettol thrown in the mix have all culminated in a grand unveiling the artists are extremely proud of. Although Derek admits his hands are still in recovery mode!

“What an emotional morning it’s been,” Derek said of the unveiling. “It’s been quite a huge learning curve and a great honour for Sonia and I to be involved in this commission – the creation of Bongaree, Matthew Flinders and of course his famous cat Trim. It’s been quite a process, but one we are proud to finally see come to fruition.”

“I’d long held this view that because so much was known about Matthew Flinders, hailed around the world as a hero and yet there was very little about a man called Bongaree who was his great mate,” Mr Clark said.

“And Flinders wouldn't have achieved much of what he did without his friendship and help.

“So along the waterfront here, over the years, we've installed many heritage pieces and signage and people are starting to understand and appreciate more of that. But in this place called Bongaree, there is no image, there is no sculpture of Bongaree himself and for years and years that worried me. Bongaree and Flinders were great mates, they did amazing things, both together and individually. I think Flinders is well recognised for what he did, but so far not for Bongaree. I felt we were long overdue to have something of our Bongaree here.”

Councillor Brooke Savige also paid homage to Bongaree in what she described as a “momentous occasion” for the Island.

“When I was first introduced to the concept of a sculpture, paying tribute to Bungaree, I was incredibly surprised to learn that this would be the very first,” Ms Savige said. “How does the first Australian born person to circumnavigate the continent, the first mediator, guide, interpreter and essentially the first Australian born person diplomat, not to mention the first Aboriginal to be appointed a chief, not already have such a recognition? This project is 224 years in the making and from the moment I heard this, I was committed to finding a way to make it happen.

“With the support of Bungaree’s family, the Bribie Island Historical Society, artist Derek and of course Barry, we set about this important task and despite the challenges, we stood firm in the view that this important project must be delivered. I am beyond proud to see history made here today, as we see this sculpture standing firm here in Bongaree, the namesake of the amazing Bungaree.”

Hitting the road or maybe the roof

How long can you sit in the car without going bonkers? If you answered as long as it takes to get from Morayfield to Albury in New South Wales (which is right next to the border of Victoria), you’re doing much better than me! My mum and I recently travelled the 1500km trip (each way) with my two girls in tow and for the most part, they were pretty good. But there were a few times I could have easily dropped them off somewhere random along the way! And no, it’s not the first time we’ve done it either! By that I mean the road trip of course.

But as they get older (and potentially a little wiser) it seems keeping them happy in the back seat gets a little bit trickier.

• Get the kids to help plan and pack an activity bag - Give each of your kids a similarly sized bag or backpack and let them fill it with their favourite things. Your kids will appreciate having some control over part of the trip and it’s one less thing for you to do to get ready.

• It’s all about keeping them occupied – books, tablets (yes the dreaded screen time), toys, etc, do whatever it takes to help keep them entertained throughout the trip.

Now any parent who has done a longhaul road trip with their kids knows exactly what I mean. The drums are beating on Bribie

Once a month, just before sunset, the Bribie Island Drum Circle can be found creating an ordered hodgepodge of sounds as they meet to have fun and rhythm. I found them late one afternoon when walking our dog Murphy. The scene was surreal. Often found by Pirate Park in Bellara, this small, diverse group of drummers of all ages, drum sizes and skill levels have been meeting as a group to beat the drums since 2014. They can get anything from four to 20 drummers at a time, highlighting the popularity and appeal of this unique gathering.

The sound is fantastic.

Diversity is the heartbeat of the Bribie Island Drum Circle, with participants showcasing an array of drum types, from djembes and congas to bongos, darbukas and even the rhythmic resonance of bucket drums. Cultural traditions come alive through the circle's embrace of rhythms from Africa, the Middle East, Native America and even Western rock. Spontaneity takes centre stage, as the group occasionally crafts impromptu rhythms on the spot.

Group leader Darryl Grant says that the drum circle is not about skill levels but the sheer joy of drumming. The group offers a spectrum of rhythms, providing beginners with accessible beats while allowing advanced players to layer in intricate fills over the foundational rhythm. The atmosphere is inclusive and purely centred on the shared love of music. Participants are encouraged to bring their own drums, though a few spares and percussion instruments are typically available.

Darryl's focus is on creating a space where individuals can have fun and connect with others who share a passion for rhythm.

Plenty of mac tuna and long tail tuna

Season’s Greetings from Danny and Michelle at Island Fishing Supplies, Banksia Beach and Bellara.

RED BEACH THROUGH TO WOORIM Plenty of mac tuna and long tail tuna getting caught on 15-20 gram Halco Twisties.

BANKSIA BEACH Plenty of grassy sweet lip around the ripples on squid strips and some really big bream as well.

WHITE PATCH Good catches of summer whiting at White Patch on the flats around the yabbie holes on an incoming tide using live blood worms.

Mackerel – Woorim Beach PACIFIC HARBOUR CANALS Some good mangrove jack around the pontoons and big eye trevally on poppers on an incoming tide and the odd mulloway at night on live baits.

Wes caught this nice grassy sweet lip around the pontoons.

SANDSTONE POINT FLATS There is still some nice summer whiting being caught on the flats, also trolling hard bodied lures in the same area some good quality cobia have been caught.

BIG MAC ATTACK Mackerel are a hard fighting, fast and very tasty fish making catching mackerel very popular in Queensland.

They are a prolific species up and down the Queensland coast, usually starting to arrive in numbers early December. Spanish, spotted and spool mackerel are the major target species.

They are an ideal small boat target and can also be caught land-based on our local beaches. Mackerel have razor sharp teeth that can easily snip through heavy nylon or fluoro carbon leader, so in most situations a length of wire trace is needed. Wire trace that is too thick or too long greatly reduces the bite. In general, try to fish as light as possible.

It is very important to get out on the water before sunrise as most of the time the action is over by 9am. There is also a late afternoon bite, but it is not as ferocious as the morning bite period.

A change of tide also sees the fish come on the bite, with the week leading up to the full moon usually the best time to chase these magnificent fish. I always dispatch mackerel straight away, bleed them and put them straight on ice.
