Constitutional Special Privileges In the last edition, Harvey wrote that we do not have to divide our Nation by race.

Race-based changes to our Constitution, no! It would be race-based if it referred to other races, but Aboriginal Australians lived here long before Europeans came.

I see proposed changes as historybased. We need to acknowledge our shared past including what was in reality, an invasion by Europeans. The list of cruel practices from the invaders and experienced by our First Nations is long. They still affect people today. These are the true stories that need to be acknowledged in Australia’s Constitution.

You wrote about the problems Aboriginal people have including unemployment, domestic violence, incarceration and more. All true!

I too, have lived and worked with Aboriginal people over many years.

These include remote communities in the Kimberley, the Pilbara and with Koories in Victoria. From these

This Issue we pay tribute to the volunteers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park and the incredible job they do in keeping this park magnificent, written by Alistair Gray.

experiences I learned lots. It was not all negative. As well as stories of massacres and child snatching, there are stories of Aboriginal knowledge, survival, agriculture, cultural practices, fire management etc.

I also learned that solutions to comunity problems cannot be imposed from people who are not part of that community. Therefore, I am optimistic that by establishing an Aboriginal Voice that informs and advises our Parliament, solutions that can happen as a result will work.

By recognising and acknowledging the vital role of our First Nations People in our Constitution there could also be a long overdue healing.

My family roots are Irish. As a group we received a fair degree of crap over the centuries and in the early days of Australia. Why can’t the Irish be in our Constitution with some special privileges?

We are a long, long way from dealing with this matter in this country. I am deeply concerned about the divisive nature of this ‘social adventure’. I don’t think my country will ever be the same again.

“Contradictory Climate Change”

Good morning Rosemary, Thank You for your interest and comments regarding this controversial matter. We shall have to agree to disagree on the issues of substance in my article. I acknowledge the dark history of European settlement in Australia. I also point out that the European settlement in Australia was not unique to this country. It was a matter of fact throughout much of the discovered world at that time in human history. The British were not alone in these matters. Neither you nor I can change the facts of history, as unpleasant as some may be. I shall not carry any guilt or blame for what happened during these times. I am not responsible for these matters.

Neither are you!

As I read your comments, I understand that you reckon that ‘special privileges’ in our Constitution will assuage the guilt carried by many Australians who believe in the black armband version of our history.

If, as you say, you have worked with Koories in Victoria, then you would know the corrupt shambles that was ATSIC and the ‘Aboriginal’ families involved. I do, and the Aboriginal people I worked with would not have them on their land.

The solution to their problems of appalling female violence, alcohol abuse, criminal behaviour of their youth and non-participation in our society will not be found in another ‘voice’ to Parliament. And I suspect you know that!

Aboriginal people cannot agree on the timing of this matter or even the need to put this matter into our Constitution. The whole of Australia knows the problems besetting Aboriginal Australians, that is not the problem!

The answer will not be found in, yet

As we experience ‘Global Winter’ in Australia, we experience the ‘Climate Change’ from Autumn to Winter, a season where those who can afford a basic commodity, turn on heating appliances and air conditioning for comfort.

During a recent fortnight of rain and heavy clouded skies, my rooftop solar panels have struggled to produce 1 kwh per day.

Will those people and politicians whosubscribe to no coal fired generation of electricity now support nuclear generation or will they have our indigenous brothers and sisters teach them how to maintain wood burning fires for their heating needs.

Perhaps they will secretly continue to use the benefits of coal generation!

Plaque remembers the Battle of Nui Le, 21 September 1971, the last major battle fought by Australian Forces in Vietnam. significance of such a wonderful place.

It is a place for reflection, solitude and relaxation.

Dedicated in 1966, this unique memorial park honours the 521 Australian Defence Force personnel who served in Vietnam and lost their lives in the service of their country. With about 60,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War and some 3,000 wounded, this park holds special significance.

The park is truly fabulous and almost certainly the best Vietnam Memorial Park in the country outside of Canberra, if not the best! Always in pristine condition, looked after and cared for by the dedicated volunteers from the Bribie Island & District sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia. I was honoured and privileged to meet longstanding president of the Sub-Branch, Rod Devenish-Meares, and be shown around the gardens as he explained the significance of the different memorials.

Arriving at 7am, the park was already a hive of activity. Lawns being mowed, hedges trimmed, mulch laid around trees,

Vietnam Veterans' Day Commemoration August 18, 2022 - 4.30 pm - Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park Bribie Island A wreath-laying will be held to honour the service and sacrifice of all those who served in the Vietnam War. The public is invited to attend. and paths blown free of leaves by a team of hardworking volunteers. All very much like a military operation making the park ready for inspection.

As Rod and I walked through the park, he explained the sub-branch had 161 members, including spouses. They were a tight-knit community, with great care taken to ensure all their members were okay and, where necessary, provided with support. At the centre of the park is the Memorial Wall. Across the top of the wall are the names of all those who lost their lives during the conflict. All except one!

At the front of the wall are the names of the local members who have passed away. Poppy ceremonies are held for each deceased member, with an Australian flag given to the surviving spouse or family member.

Throughout the memorial park are 11 gardens. Each with commemorative plaques, including for the Battle of Long Tan, The Australian Army Training Team,

Operation Iron Triangle, Operation Bribie, Fires Support Base Coral, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Australian Navy, Operation Coburg, Operation Federal, Operation Nudgee and HQAFV, HQALSG & Embassy Guard. In addition, since the original establishment of the park, a new memorial to the SAS, including the Townsville Blackhawk accident in 1996. Also, a memorial to the spouses left behind while the men were at war. I am sure I have missed others, as many plaques exist throughout the gardens. Hopefully, some of the pictures will do this story justice, but I encourage you to take time out to visit the park and see for yourself what is there.

The park and gardens are beautiful, with lovely tall gum trees providing shade and seats on which to sit and reflect. The park is regularly utilised for weddings, various sub-branch commemorations, Vietnam Veterans Day and social functions.

However, despite some small grants from

the Caboolture Shire Council back in 2004, help from the government to build the Memorial Wall, and a grant from the ANZAC Day Trust to pay for the garden name plaques, the bulk of funds used to maintain and develop the memorial park has been raised by the Vietnam Veterans themselves.

Rod said there are plans to further expand the park by reclaiming some swamp lands and improving nearby stream flow. The improvements planned include a stage and other buildings to store equipment and further enhance the magnificence of this extraordinary park.

At the end of the tour, we sat with volunteer workers enjoying breakfast, a brew and a good yarn. Later in the morning, I visited the Vietnam Veteran's office on First Avenue, Bongaree and met Ernie Hall, the Sub-branch Secretary, who is essential in ensuring members receive the support needed in their retirement.

Biggs Avenue Beachmere Council’s plans to revitalise the Beachmere foreshore has been met with mixed reaction from Beachmere locals.

Several years ago, traffic calming measures were requested in the busy Biggs Avenue precinct where coffee shops, a children’s playground and the weekly arrival of the library bus converge.

From a suggested simple reduction in speed limit, or construction of ‘speed bumps’, the council has spent $500,000 in streetscaping with a contribution of $250,000 from the Federal Government.

Eventually the area will have a 30kph vehicle speed limit in a shared zone for pedestrians in sections from Main Street to Mazlin Park in Biggs Avenue.

However, it is the bright blue colour of the road and fish ‘that face the wrong way’ that is causing residents to do a double take.

it would be this bright or such strange fish”, one local resident said. “It’s like the fish are looking the wrong way”. Other residents say the money could have been better spent in other areas including the upgrade of the playground. New plantings have tidied the area, and additional roadside car parks included.

Chris Keeley, new owner of the Beach Shak Café, said, “although there had been some challenges in the construction phase, the work was a positive. It definitely highlights the area”.

Stage 3 works are due to commence at the end of 2022 with an upgrade to Mazlin Park including walking paths, picnic facilities, plantings, and a toilet. The Beachmere Activity Centre, originally the Sailing Club, has recently been demolished due to a structural fault.

Bakeries are $1350 per adult whilst a child has $675. A butcher has $920 for adults and $460 for a child. Licenced restaurants are $4640 for an adult while an unlicenced venue is $3660, the same as a caterer, similar to a take away and mixed business.

Dancing through life

Mandy Noble is graceful, elegant and very composed, combined with a mixture of humbleness about life in the spotlight and growing up in the buzz of an entertainment family. As the daughter of performer-comedian Buster Noble and performer/ dance teacher Helen de Paul and little sister to performer/singer/dancer/actress

Mandy Trisha (Patsy Ann) Noble, Mandy was destined to spend a part of life on the stage. But it’s her love and passion for dance that has held the biggest piece of her heart for many years and what would eventually lead to her teaching at Bribie’s own University of the Third Age (U3A).

Her foray into the world of dance started at the tender age of five, in her mother’s very own studio. Life changed pace for the entire family when they made the decision to move overseas in the early 1960s for Trisha to pursue her career.

But on their return to Australia in 1968, Mandy’s mother reopened her studio and

she continued her training in tap, ballet and jazz. When she was 16, Mandy joined her father in a song/dance/comedy act which toured the New South Wales club circuit. She looked upon it as her ‘training’.

“I’m from an entertaining family,” she said.

“I was never going to be allowed to do anything but go into show business because that was the path I was always going to follow. I did have the thought of going to do something else. And in my life, I did do other things, but I always came back to it.

It has been an amazing life full of amazing opportunities and experiences.”

When Mandy finished high school, she and some girlfriends danced on cruise ships which she describes as ‘a fabulous time in her life’. She was then fortunate enough to tour with Johnny O’Keefe

before auditioning and joining Reg Livermore’s Wonderwoman. She also had the opportunity to appear at theatre restaurants the Neutral Bay Music Hall and The Manly Music Loft, as well as tackling some television commercials, before deciding to join her mum in her dance studio to complete all of her teaching credentials. This would eventually lead to Mandy becoming a dance examiner with the Australasian Dance Association (ADA, formerly FTAD).

In 2019, Mandy decided it was time to retire from ADA and she and her husband made the decision to leave Sydney and settle on Bribie Island. It would seem the life of dance had not entirely left her system and Mandy began her search to participate in adult tap dance classes. She discovered U3A and joined. Mandy settled

into classes and after a few weeks, she was asked to choreograph a routine and later to teach. Now, she teaches five classes, three days a week in jazz, tap and ballet.

“U3A is such a fantastic organisation,” Mandy said. “I had no intention of teaching, but it just happened. I started with the tap class and then I was asked to teach the jazz dance classes and then I was approached by some of the ladies to start an adult ballet class. I’d never taught senior ballet, so I worked on a syllabus that would suit these ladies. The ballet is very popular and they love it! The first day I went to teach I had my little black skirt on, so about three to four weeks later most of the ladies in the class had their own as well.”

The classes are all taught on a voluntary basis and provide Mandy with the opportunity to give back to the community.

“Being in the entertainment industry, they’re very big on charity and giving back and it was a very important concept to my parents as well,” Mandy said. “As kids we would always do charity shows. So, when I found out U3A was a voluntary organisation, I thought it was perfect and my way of giving back.”

With so many fond stories to share, Mandy admits it’s a little difficult now that her parents and sister have all passed on, but she’s grateful for the time she had with them.

“Very sadly my sister passed away last year. She had been ill for about 18 months,” Mandy said. “It was sad to see her get so sick. She was the most beautiful singer and loved what she did. I really looked up to Trisha and my mum, they were a great inspiration to me. For mum, everything she touched turned to gold. She was just one of those people. When we came home from England in the late 1960s via ship, that was a six-week trip, Mum choreographed all the shows on that trip, just because she could. She was also one of those people, if she was in a room, she was the centre of the world, people just gravitated towards her. Trish and I were quite private and introverted in our own way. If I’m teaching a class, I’m focused on that but otherwise I keep to myself. But mum, she was very extroverted and dad was pretty much the same. You’d open the fridge door and he’d start his act. My dad was very funny, he was a natural, he was meant to be a performer.”

Life has certainly been fulfilling for Mandy. She’s seen lots of the world over the years because of her own talent, family background, her sister’s performances and also undertaken many motorbike trips with her husband, to the likes of Tasmania, New Zealand, Morocco, Turkey, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. She now proudly calls Bribie home and wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We drove across the bridge and we thought it was beautiful and clean,” she said. “We were just amazed at how well the Island was looked after, the welcoming from others, it really is an amazing place to be.”

Standing proud Some of us senior citizens are being criticized for the present deficiencies in our modern world. Real or imaginary, present or past, foreign, or domestic.

We take responsibility for all our actions and omissions. We do not try to blame others for our past imperfections, ignorance, or failures.

Our generation saved the World from Fascism, Communism, and Racism, while we raised the ‘standard of living’, ‘health care’, and ‘life expectancy’.

HOWEVER, upon reflection, I would like to point out that it was NOT senior citizens who took, The melody out of music, The pride out of appearance, The courtesy out of driving, The romance out of love, The commitment out of marriage, The responsibility out of parenthood, The togetherness out of the family, The learning out of education, The civility out of behavior, The refinement out of language, The dedication out of employment, The prudence out of spending.

And, we DO understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember fondly those who have fought and died under our flag for the country we love.

Don’t hang your head in shame at what we are currently seeing, but rather stand proudly at what we actually did!

something was unacceptable or outrageous, Darryl would simply comment.... “Tell ‘em they’re dreaming.”

What would Darryl say if asked about the selection of the site for the proposed medical facility at the corner of First Av and Goodwin Dr? Consider the ‘merits’ of the site: • It does not comply with the MBRC Planning Scheme.

• MBRC has no say in the approvals for that site. They are all being made at Ministerial level.

• The site is a wetland area which will cause significant construction issues.

• This wetland site is home to a number of threatened and protected fauna and flora species including some protected under the Federal EPBC Act. The site was approved without referral to the Federal Environment Minister • The site is 2m – 3m below the level of the surrounding roadway and will require enormous amounts of fill, making construction much more expensive and could compromise the ability to provide safe and reliable utilities on the site.

• There is little or no public transport.

• There was no public consultation before the site was selected.

• It is an odd-shaped block with access issues and considerable layout difficulties.

• The vegetation on the site is protected and the ‘protection overlay’ will have to be lifted for construction to proceed.

• The State Government has been advised that there are other sites available on Bribie, that are level and cleared, with far better access and public transport.

To add to all this, the services to be provided in that facility have not been finalised. It is difficult to understand how a building can be designed when it is not known what the building will be used for. Will the building even be ‘fit for service?’

The Truth Congratulations to the Editor and Harvey Fewings for daring to inform readers of the TRUTH about attempts to change our CONSTITUTION. Another overpaid ‘VOICE’ in Parliament will do as much good for Aboriginals as the stupid expenditure of $25 MILLION on a $500 flag and pole on the Harbour Bridge.

Violence to women will be reduced when the ‘intelligentsia’ stop using the advective ‘domestic’ and start NAMING and SHAMING THE OFFENDERS. Men who use violence to women are COWARDS who cannot accept pain themselves. The refusal to identify offenders merely allows the offenders to hide from public knowledge and thus continue their crimes.

All women have the answer to prevent violence. UNITE in groups and threaten to or mete out the same pain to individual cowards. This remedy is a guaranteed cure.

Some years ago, when the Queensland rain season flooded roads and prevented delivery of alcohol to an Aboriginal community, the alcohol suppliers chartered an aircraft to deliver its monthly supplies at exorbitant prices.

The WOMEN of the Community banded together, met the aircraft on arrival and advised the crew to unload, under penalty, of their aircraft being subject to a hail of rocks, stones, and other weapons.

The crew saw the wisdom of listening to WOMEN and the aircraft departed with its load. Peace was enjoyed by the women and children.

Can all the do-gooders with all their government sponsored taxpayers’ money, and paid trips to attend meetings, reduce violence to women and children? NO! Violence against women and their chil-

dren will cost the Australian economy an estimated $13.6 billion this year. Without appropriate action to address violence against women and their children, an estimated three-quarters of a million Australian women will experience and report violence in the period of 2021-22, costing the Australian economy an estimated $15.6 billion.

By Sheree Hoddinett When it comes to stepping out into the community as a volunteer, Di Nicholls-Bull is proud to fill the role. As the secretary of the Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers group and a senior volunteer, Di relishes the opportunity to utilise her medical skills with a purpose of helping others. Her time as a volunteer can often be a mixed bag of some fast-paced action or waiting around for something to happen, but it’s all part and parcel of the ‘job’ and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

A typical weekend for Di and other members of MBFAV could involve a school fete, local shows, a horse event or watching on as the wheels hit the track for some BMX action. While it may not sound like everyone’s cup of tea, Di looks at the prospect of volunteering at a more senior age from another angle.

“I wanted to do something with my time, to keep my mind active, to keep myself engaged with the community and also be a part of a like-minded peer group,” she says.

“I’ve been a nurse for over 50 years, and I wanted to continue using those skills and not disengage with the medical and health side of things but also assist with providing services for the community as well.”

Like most volunteer groups out there, MBFAV is in the midst of a busy time, with a full calendar of events coming up.

“We do a lot of work with Burpengary Pony Club and other groups using those facilities,” Di says. “With BMX, they’re coming up to their big competition season and that’s on top of their normal run of events. They call them the Snake Pits, they go all day and all night for their championships at both Caboolture and Pine Rivers. There’s also other groups engaging us to go up the Sunshine Coast. Our Sunshine Coast team is extremely busy and we’re assisting them and in turn they’re assisting us. There’s lots happening out there, and the group doesn’t have a spare weekend at the moment.”

Di Nicholls-Bull wants to encourage others in the community to become active through volunteering volunteer group is they need new members to come on board and help fill the gaps created by those who have moved on to bigger things.

“We’re absolutely fighting to get members right now, we really need people,” Di says.

“We’ve had some of our amazing volunteers

leave us, which is great for them but not so good for us. One of our medics, he started with us while he was a student paramedic, has been offered a job in London with the London Ambulance Service so he’s heading off overseas. Kiah (seen in a recent edition of the newspaper) now has a full-time job with Queensland Ambulance Service doing

patient transport and then hopefully a fulltime position, so that’s really great for her.

Once they get full-time work, they don’t have time to volunteer, so we’ve lost a lot of our students.”

Di highlights the volunteer positions as a great opportunity for anyone who has some spare time on their hands and wants to do something in the community. All you need is basic first aid training and CPR and you can do further upskilling once you’re with the group.

“We’re very short on volunteers, as is every volunteer organisation in the universe, but we could really do with some extra sets of hands,” Di says. “I really encourage anyone who has retired or semi-retired, who maybe wants to stay engaged in the profession to come along and see what we’re about.

There are also roles for people that are not health focussed, like maintaining our equipment, looking after the stores and co-ordinating the training. There are roles for people who don’t want to be frontline or don’t feel they could kneel to do things like CPR for 10 minutes and there are other jobs they can do to assist, pack vehicles, or even set up for events. There are roles on the committee. We need people to write policies and procedures. We need people to be secretaries and treasurers. Those roles are still there, you don’t have to do the first aid.”

Even though it’s not always the most exciting role to fulfil, Di admits there is some perspective to be gained from being a volunteer, especially with a first aid group.

“The good thing about volunteering with first aid is to be bored, because it means nobody has been hurt and all the safety parameters have come into effect,” she says.

“For me, it’s important to keep maintaining my skills and keeping engaged with the community. Plus being seen and feeling part of a team is important. When you retire, you can become isolated, and we don’t want that to happen.”

Noelene – Guiding Ukulele’s

It was great to read about Noelene Gorman’s history, but something even more important to Bribie was missing from her career description.

In 2009, she ran a Ukulele beginners’ class at U3A, where I was among about 15 locals who got started.

The group nearly folded completely after Noelene left. However, she had changed my outlook on life, so I used what I had learned to started teaching there in 2012. Players from elsewhere have contributed to the scene, but I have now taught over 150 locals how to play.

On page 29 you reported on the recent ukulele jam session. This may not have happened but for Noelene. Sue was one of my students, though Richard learned elsewhere. Now, there are so many players, we can be assured that Ukuleles will keep locals enjoying the fun for the rest of their lives.

The Ekka - Queensland’s Time to Shine

Sour Recognition Come on, Harvey Fewings, you can do better than your sour article in Issue 78 arguing that Aboriginal recognition in the Constitution should be deferred because some remote communities are dysfunctional. No doubt you’ve heard of the expression, ‘It is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time’.

Surely it ought to be possible to amend the Constitution to respect the current custodians of our nation’s Aboriginal heritage, while concurrently working to improve the social and living conditions in remote communities? They are even responsibilities of different levels of government!

Surely, when Shire Clerk in Arnhem Land, you were capable of managing several issues at one time. Surely, if a staff member appeared in your office with an issue important to them, you didn’t slam the door shut, saying, “Come back in 10 years’ time when I have fixed 50 other problems”. To argue that all discussion in the federal arena on constitutional amendment, which is a matter of dignity and respect, should be deferred until housing, sanitation, alcohol abuse, diets, employment and other shortcomings are remedied by state or territory governments, condemns discussion on constitutional amendment to the never-never. Our nation should be more competent than that!

By Amelia Strazdins Winter has set in and August is only a couple of weeks away. This can only mean one thing; the Ekka is fast approaching. The Queensland show, starting on August 6, draws in crowds from all around the state and even catches the attention of those interstate. Its popularity has remained as high as ever, despite the challenges and trials the past couple of years have presented to the event organisers, venders, and those in attendance. Cancellation of the event, capacity limitations and covid have all impacted the event over the past two years. Such issues have not only impacted the show itself but also local businesses and farmers, who rely upon the Ekka for income and exposure. Aside from all the rides and plethora of showbags, the event is a display of Queensland’s best produce and products. From agriculture to strawberry ice-cream, showgoers get to experience firsthand local businesses and owners gain both business and meaningful interactions with their customers.

So much of our lives have transitioned online, but such transitions have meant face-to-face interactions and conversations have become lacking. A large aspect of supporting locally, Australian owned business is interacting with the owners, listening to their stories, and understanding how we as customers can continue to support their endeavours. The Ekka provides the opportunity for business exposure alongside real life customer interactions. As we all know smaller businesses are still struggling to recover from recent challenges, including local floods. Many have faced the possibility of having to shut down their business. It is only through the support of local communities that many of these businesses have been able to survive. Our Bribie community, and smaller local businesses, perfectly display how local businesses can flourish with our support.

The combination of making local purchases and supporting Aussie businesses ensures that industries remain Australian owned and operated. The

Ekka is both a family fun event and an opportunity to view the extent of Queensland based industries, such as agriculture and food, and businesses.

Whether it be a day trip or a weekend away there are so many exciting activities to experience. From learning more about our famers and their animals, to competitions and enjoying local food vendors, there is plenty to

do. This event also helps direct our focus back home. Make the effort to try a local restaurant you have not been to before, try to purchase local produce or even attend the local markets often held on a Sunday. This August, enjoy the Ekka and all it has to offer, and remember the importance of supporting and shopping local and Australian businesses.

Community spirit shines with a day of cultural enrichment at Bribie’s NAIDOC event YAC and PIEEC held their third NAIDOC event on June 30 Story by Alistair Gray & Sheree Hoddinett Wow! What a incredible day! It was so great to see the local community get behind and support the hard work of the Pumicestone Indigenous Education & Employment Council Inc (better known as PIEEC), at their recent NAIDOC week event at Brennan Park, Bongaree. Bringing young and old members of the community together to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements, it was held on Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi land by the Youth Advocacy Centre (YAC) and (PIEEC). This was the third time for their NAIDOC event, which in previous years was hosted at the Bribie Skatepark.

Although held prior to NAIDOC week, it was all in conjunction to the theme Get Up, Stand Up and Show Up. Led by PIEEC jarjums (children) and cultural Ambassador Craig Weribone-Wright, PIEEC chair Michelle Watson was the MC with community Elders watching over the flag raising. Kristine Ellis shared the history of NAIDOC and Indigenous Human Rights lawyer Trudy Broderick was the guest speaker for the day. Indigenous Insights performed a children's concert, featuring singing and dancing and Murri Tukka educated the crowd on bush tucker and DJ Waria provided deadly music.

So much expanded from the previous year’s event, including storytelling for the kids, cultural dancing, music, indigenous food, ceremonies, and entertainment, a cultural day

of fun and learning.

Those in attendance were also able to take part in an inflatable ball activity supplied by the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health, early years Yoga with Aunty Deb Jackson, yarns with Uncle Ron Powell, a Moreton Bay Library and Bribie Seaside Museum activity, a visit from Bribie Fire & Rescue Service, as well as involvement from Global Care Bribie, Headspace, Save the Children MYVan and USC. The event could not have occurred without support from Moreton Bay Regional Council, Anne Brown, Ali King, Uncle Ron Powell and R&W Bribie Island.

Member for Longman Terry Young, spoke during the formal part of the event, where he paid tribute to the extraordinary work done by PIEEC. “The Pumicestone Indigenous Education and Employment council have created a vessel to advocate for better learning and work outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people”, he said. “I see some of the great work the Council does, and I am proud to see groups like this forming across Longman, bringing everyone together to achieve better outcomes for the community”.

Terry also acknowledged the great work the Elders and Leaders of PIEEC are doing in creating better communities through support, education, understanding and listening.

The death of commonsense and the rise of sheer stupidity in public debate

Lizards live in simple worlds.

A basic understanding of the scientific reality prevailing on Earth indicates that human-derived legislation shall have no discernible or measurable impact upon on our weather!

Who is in charge of the dry gully?

Who gets to ruffle the frill of the latest female frilly in the gully?

We stagger on…

These are the issues that are quickly settled, no nonsense, no waffling, no press herd squeaking questions to a politician with a face like a dropped pie!

A short time ago, yet another mad example of the slavering nonsense splashed about our nation over the pandemic raised its scaly, ugly head.

Just deal with the reality, sort the matter out and get on with life.

Millions of Australians are subject to vaccine mandates. They lose their employment unless they can prove that they have been vaccinated.

Cranky Lizard does not live in that world and accepts that the human world is more contentious, superficial, considerably challenging and, until recently, occasionally flooded, with brilliant light from human spirits so generous and talented that tears come readily.

Now, there are compelling arguments to support this position, taken by Governments and large employers.

Cranky Lizard has no sensible comment regarding these mandates, but Cranky Lizard wonders why professional lifesavers on the beaches of New South Wales are denied their employment unless vaccinated.

If you listen to the musical genius of Karl Jerkins and ‘Benedictus’ from The Armed Man, a Mass for Peace by The London Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, you will know what Cranky Lizard means!

Cranky Lizard asks you, once more, to think about this, really think about this!

But, daily life calls, and we thud, on our bum, back in a place where we are faced with two worlds.

One is real because it is there and one which is conjured in the fevered minds of the millennial-saturated media and the mincing, poncing gaggle of politicians and minders visiting the sites of natural disasters.

Note that Cranky Lizard uses the term natural disasters.

In the minds of the millennial media, nothing of any consequence occurred before they were born! Or nothing worth reporting on anyway!

In a recent comic episode, Cranky Lizard observed a media drongo (no other word works), standing beneath a flood level sign noting the level of the 1867 flood on the Nepean River, which was metres higher than the current disastrous flood.

And that is exactly what fires up Cranky Lizard!

It is no longer a matter of being assiduous at researching information or how it is distributed, by far, the large majority of young reporters/journalists are not seeking the truth.

If you cannot put it in a tweet, it is not worth considering.

The drongo reported, live to camera, that the current flood was the worst ever recorded and was entirely due to climate change. All that was missing was for someone to change his nappies!

Cranky Lizard quotes a professional journalist, Chris Kenny, from The Australian, published on 09 July 2022, ‘Either we have reached peak stupid, or it is impossible to contemplate the depth of inanity to which we will sink and the damage it will do to our country. The lack of logic and the deliberate shunning of rational thought in our national debate have reached an obscene or absurd level, depending on your mood.’

He had not noted the sign above his head or the information it contained.

Cranky Lizard is pragmatic about most matters, Lizards must be!

Or perhaps the camera operator had seen the sign but kept filming anyway because it was too good an opportunity to miss! Asante Sana, Sheree!

And, like many other Australians, Cranky Lizard depends upon the intelligence of the leadership of our nation to address the matters of life that press upon us all.

The reporter, so captured by the mantras of climate change, was simply incapable of discerning the damage to his credibility as a professional journalist, or maybe did not care, as long as the words climate change were used again and again.

There you are, in a surf rip, being carried quickly towards New Zealand, struggling against the tide and relentless surf, would you really be worried whether the person coming to save you has had a COVID vaccination?

It is disturbing, therefore, to note that, due almost entirely to the clamoring and ignorant shouting of the digital mob, our leaders drift away into worlds of arrogance and nonsense.

In the Hawkesbury region, in the last

week or two, an intelligent and decent man, recently elected Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, wandered among the glittering-eyed media throng and actually said words to the effect of, ‘My government will enact legislation addressing climate change and thus prevent these sorts of natural disasters from occurring again.’

Imagine that?

Think about that?

A human being, leading an elected government of human beings, will enact legislation that will ultimately prevent rain from falling and flooding valleys where other humans live!!

A sensible man like Anthony Albanese would never say these words if he knew that he would be called to account for this absurd, arrogant nonsense.

But the media! The media fell upon these words like skinny, ragged, starving prophets and rushed to broadcast them to us all with an ecclesiastical air of salvation.

Cranky Lizard asks you to think about the words ‘natural disaster.’

Just think about them and what they really mean?

Human beings can create disasters of nature by their actions, but natural disasters occur naturally, and that is why they are called ‘natural disasters.’

Would you?

Cranky Lizard knows about public liability, about the presumption of safety from first responders, but are you going to send the lifesaver back unless they can prove they are vaccinated?

If that is you, you will probably drown, and in doing so, you will be posthumously awarded one of the highest levels of the ‘Darwin Awards’ for your contribution to the future of humanity!

Cranky Lizard highlights the pettiness, the mindless, eye-glazing rubbish that occupies much of our public debate.

Public debate in Australia was always a challenge, it was vigorous, no quarter asked or given, as it should be!

Cranky Lizard was proud of the level of intelligence, the public eloquence and the relevance of public and political conversations that were had in this country.

Now, however!

All we hear is the clumping of the feet of the hysterical, digital mob as they herd themselves from one event to another. We witness the earnest, empty faces of drongoes standing under flood signs, speaking to a camera, about rain, but not understanding anything they say…….

New Greater Caboolture Chamber of Commerce gets off to a flying start February with its monthly event program for local business people. Already its membership is more than 56, with plans to increase the active membership to more than 700 over the next few years. Many businesses participating in the ‘Caboolture Made’ program have already seen the chamber’s benefits and become members. There is a fresh glow of confidence in the air with businesses connecting, collaborating, and establishing new working relationships. Riverbank Parkland work gets underway It will be years in the making but Riverbank locals and other residents in the community will certainly reap the rewards of the finished Riverbank Parkland when the project is complete. Set on 25.2 hectares and spanning 1.5 kilometres across the Caboolture River, the first phase of the $6 million parkland is underway and expected to be finished early next year. Planning has been in progress with Moreton Bay Regional Council and Peet Limited for more than three years with the dirt now being turned over for the important work to begin.

The Riverbank Parkland is a wide, open natural space and with more than one third of the Riverbank community dedicated to open space, families have plenty of room to exercise and make the most of fun outdoor activities. While showcasing extensive planted and natural landscaped areas with river views, the parkland will also offer public car parking spaces and an amenities block.

A prime spot for families to gather and enjoy, the site will have a range of features including walking and cycling tracks with river access, a shaded adventure playground, a basketball half-court, hopscotch, scooter track, barbecue and picnic facilities

Mayor Peter Flannery said liveable communities with plenty of well-designed, open spaces were a major factor in why families chose to live in the region.

“That’s why council is investing $2 million collected from infrastructure charges towards the first stage of Riverbank Parkland, alongside its record $743 million budget so we can have those better parks, open spaces and services,” Mayor Flannery said. “Families want open space that enhances the local environment, provides quality equipment and connects to community hubs without having to hop in the car.”

Division 3 Councillor, Adam Hain, highlighted the importance of the new parkland creating not only a fun space for all members of the family but also for filling the missing link between homes in the area.

“We’re watching Caboolture transform into a place that celebrates its environment and getting outdoors, encourages more sustainable modes of transport, and most importantly is a connected community,” Cr Hain said.

Phase two of the project is expected to begin in 2023 to 2024.

Swords, steeds, sunshine and smiles: the triumphant return of the Abbey Medieval Festival Story and Photos

After two years of Covid interruptions, the grounds of Abbeystowe came alive once again with the rich aromas of medieval (and modern) cooking, the cheers of excitement at the jousting, the clanging of swords in battle and an assortment of outfits befitting of the festival arena.

A crowd of about 100 people turned out on Wednesday July 20 to share their stories about the quality of local health care with Leader of the Opposition David Crisafulli and his LNP team. Moderating the meeting was Member for Glass House Andrew Powell along with Member for Longman Terry Young in attendance. David Crisafulli and Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates have been running a series of Town Hall meetings around the state as they develop

on Bribie, notably the complete lack of after-hours care. Often patients with immediate needs were forced to attend the hospital when local after-hours GP services would have been sufficient. The stories and examples of system failure were numerous.

The meeting was unhappy with the Labor Government’s proposed Satellite Hospital for Bribie, with many concerns expressed.

A hospital without beds, a set of specialist rooms and day clinics. No emergency department or intensive care unit. The government’s definition of a Satellite Hospital wasn’t meeting the ‘pub test’. It is seen as misleading and dangerous and creates misunderstanding.

David Crisafulli outlined the LNP plans to fix the health system. These plans included-

Abbey Museum and Abbey Medieval Festival director, Edith Cuffe, was glad to see the festival come to fruition and forge ahead.

“It was very exciting to see the festival come together after two years,” she said.

“We had enormous support from the community who were excited to see the festival return, even selling out our tickets prior to the weekend opening.”

As always, the jousting drew the big crowd numbers, with pre-sold tickets long gone before the weekend even began. It seems it was worth it, with lucky attendees treated to a very special win.

“The highlight event, the ‘Moreton Bay Joust Championship’, with its pageantry and excitement, was extremely popular,” Edith said. “We were very thrilled to have our first female joust champion, Lady Eliza Jane.”

But it wasn’t all just happening in the main jousting arena. Medieval reenactors and street performers were back sharing their knowledge and demonstrating their skills in arts, crafts, music, dance and much more. Despite a two-year hiatus, festival attendance was high, with 12,000 tickets sold each day. But, as with any

The power of a bow and arrow major event, there were a few hiccups encountered across the weekend.

“There were a few teething problems that had to be managed and the impact of the weather, the rain the week before, brought its own challenges,” Edith said. “Some of our biggest challenges included managing offsite parking for the first time and transporting patrons to the festival after losing access to a nearby property where we previously had parked cars.

“This unfortunately led to queues, which were also experienced at food outlets on the festival site as well. They were sadly impacted by numbers due to the effects of Covid on the hospitality/events industry.

We also sadly saw the loss of volunteers over the weekend from the influx of Covid and flu.”

If you missed out on this year’s festival, don’t despair, it won’t be long before planning is underway for next year’s event with organisers starting the process in August.

“For now, we are reviewing all the feedback from this year’s attendees so we can improve on some of the challenges experienced,” Edith said.

the Opposition’s Health Policy and hear from the ground up what is really happening out there. They have collected many stories to tell on the floor of parliament to support their claims of systemic failure in the health system and their recommendations for change. Unfortunately, MP Ros Bates was ill and unable to make this Town Hall meeting.

The tone of the meeting was professional and both warm and caring, particularly regarding universal care for the health and welfare of all the health professionals, doctors, nurses, and other health professionals who have been under immense strain and pressure. We heard stories of nurses in tears, many at breaking point, and who have had enough of dealing with a broken system. Many want to give their careers away but know they can’t act as that will only worsen the current problem.

We listened to stories of the long ambulance wait times. How a man in his 80S had to wait hours for help following a fall.

There were comments about the state of Caboolture Hospital and how residents drive past the hospital, to hospitals north or south, for care rather than getting care there. There were examples of mistakes made. Almost inevitable when doctors are under so much pressure. Significant concerns were raised by the lack of GPs

The constructive meeting provided valuable feedback as the LNP continues its fight for a significantly improved health system.

Nationally, in April we had another solid month with L J Hooker agents across Australia selling more than $1.66 billion during the month, which was slightly lower than April 2021 but a 53% increase on 2020.

The average sales price for the LJ Hooker rose by 10% from March to April 2022. Over the past 12 months, the average sales price has risen by 16%, which is in line with CoreLogic’s national home value index.

According to PTY Data, nationally LJ Hooker also listed 1,984 properties during the month.

May signalled a change in markets around Australia with the first interest rate rise and the change in government due to the federal election.

Since the change of government, the buyer enquiry has slowed somewhat, however, now that the budget is out, we have noticed that enquiry lifting.

The month of June has seen the buyer enquiry shift upwards resulting in a good number of sales being transacted locally.

These are always ingredients that create some unease, especially at inspections and in transaction volumes, however, we are pleased to report that LJ Hooker bucked the trend with a whopping $1.81 billion in sales nationally, which is a record May result.

We also saw an increase of 9.6 % month on month in listings also outperforming the market trend.

REIQ readies agents for new rental laws

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) expects the ripple effect of the most significant rental legislative reforms in more than a decade will start to be felt by the community, with less than three months until the new laws come into effect on 1 October 2022.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the State peak body was readying property managers for the changes to the legislation governing residential tenancies in Queensland so they were prepared to help property owners and tenants navigate the new legislative landscape.

Ms Mercorella said one of the more damaging legislative changes was the removal of the right for property owners to end a periodic tenancy simply by providing notice.

“When these laws were passed, we warned they could effectively spell the end of periodic tenancies in Queensland,” Ms Mercorella said.

“Our best practice advice for property managers is to start talking to their clients now about the risk of a ‘never-ending tenancy’ if they don’t transition periodic tenancies to fixed-term tenancies ahead of the new laws.

“We wouldn’t be surprised if periodic leases become extremely rare if not extinct in Queensland, which is a shame given the flexibility it offers both tenants and lessors.”

Ms Mercorella said property managers were also preparing for a potential influx of tenants seeking approval for pets, given owners could only decline if they can establish prescribed grounds.

“We recognise that pets are often a beloved family member, but equally appreciate that not all property owners feel comfortable with the potential risk of pet damage to their property and its value,” she said.

“Previously property owners could choose to simply say “no” to pets in their property, but with these new laws, property owners will have limited grounds to refuse a pet request.

“While it’s a silver lining that property owners will gain the ability to impose certain conditions in relation to the approval of a pet in their property, and be able to seek compensation for damage caused by pets, only time will tell if this change will shrink the rental pool if investors tap out.”

Ms Mercorella said there were a myriad of reasons why the Sunshine State was a great place to buy property, but that it was important to recognise that the more property owners’ choices were restricted, the less appealing of an investment option Queensland property becomes.

“The unfortunate reality is that for some, this will take the shine out of

investing in Queensland property,” she said.

“While some property investors may have made the decision to sell in anticipation of the new laws being introduced, it’s concerning to think what the aftermath could be once the laws are in operation.”

She said heavy-handed legislative reform that disrupts the delicate balance of contractual rights between tenants and property owners can have unintended consequences for the entire rental market.

“We can only hope the State Government is paying close attention to the impacts of these new laws, before they launch into the controversial phase two of rental reforms flagged for this year,” she said.

“While we understand that there needs to be protections available for tenants, finding the right balance is important, because we do heavily rely on private investors when it comes to housing Queenslanders.”

New Bribie bridge still a (paper) work in progress

To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

By Sheree Hoddinett If you’re holding out hope for another bridge to Bribie, you’ll have to wait a bit (or possibly a lot) longer. Another step has been made in the process, with consultancy firm AECOM selected to develop a business case for the project. Appointed in May this year, AECOM will carry out their business case with an expected completion date of mid-2024.

With the one and only bridge getting closer to its 60th birthday (originally built in 1963), current pedestrian and road traffic has shown continual growth and demand for a new bridge.

There are just two lanes for road users and one pedestrian pathway, shared by foot traffic and bicycle users.

Residents and regular visitors to the Island know all too well what happens if the current bridge becomes inaccessible, creating traffic chaos and flared tempers. The only other potential access to the Island is via watercraft or if you’re extremely talented and can potentially walk on water (we all know this isn’t an option!).

Transport and Main Roads Minister, Mark Bailey, wants to assure locals that the existing bridge is structurally safe.

“We inspect and properly maintain the Bribie Island Bridge regularly, but it’s important we look into the future,” Mr Bailey said. “A new bridge will make travel to the Island safer, more reliable, and better cater for active transport, which we know is booming in the area. AECOM will build on previous projects that considered corridor options, confirm a preferred option and begin early design activities.”

The last study was undertaken in 2014 to identify corridor options for the existing bridge. Current planning will build on this existing study, with

locals encouraged to take part in community consultation.

Although the state government has committed $4 million to planning and finalising a preferred option for a new bridge, funding for construction of the new bridge will be considered in future funding rounds against other transport infrastructure priorities across the state.

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

More than just a stretch

How Pilates is easily misunderstood

I’m the first to admit that a few years ago I had no idea about Pilates, what it was and what it involved. I knew absolutely nothing about it and couldn’t even really tell you anything about core strength or even actually locating my core (you think you know, but you don’t!). Fast forward to June 2021 and I find myself signing up for a Reformer Pilates class and wondering what I was about to get myself into.

Why I was there boils down to hip/ back and knee pain brought on by previous injury, years of boot camp and having kids. After checking in with my doctor, it was suggested I give Pilates a shot.

While the everyday person likely thinks Pilates is just a stretch and a giggle, let me tell you how oh so wrong you are! There is definitely stretching, most certainly laughter and a full body workout. It’s not the type of exercise that sets your heartrate through the roof, but it does work your muscles, in ways you never imagined. One year on from starting my Pilates journey, I have noticed big changes. I found my core and know how to use it (most of the time) and I actually enjoy going to the class. A big shout out has to go to my fellow 6 am class members - the best group of ladies who know how to laugh, share and provide a great start to the day when everyone else is still in bed.

So, what is it about Pilates that sets it apart from other exercise? What is it good for and what are the benefits?

If you ask Whitney, “in one word – everything.” She highly recommends Pilates to anybody and everybody because it can be easily modified to suit the individual and is great for: • • • • • •

Tula Pilates founder and instructor Whitney Hedges is a big advocate for Pilates. Not just because she runs a studio, but due to her own experiences and wanting to share something she loves with others.

“Pilates is not just a fitness fad or exercise, it's a way of living,” Whitney says. “Performed correctly and with proper guidance and assistance, you will feel and see the difference of your body changing. Joseph Pilates himself quotes ‘in 10 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you'll see the difference and in 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body’. We have a lot of members who don't like the gym environment or boot camp style workouts. Pilates is more gentle on your body but can be challenging at the same time.”

I’ll be open and honest here and admit that I thought Pilates would be easier than what it is. I have days where I struggle, and I think that has a lot to do with the mind as well as the body. When you first take a look at the reformer itself, it’s hard not to view it as a device of torture. But with everything related to physical movement, you just have to take it at your own pace.

“I was recommended Pilates by my doctor because I have scoliosis,” she says. “The more I practiced Pilates, the more I felt my body changing. The pain from the scoliosis subsided, my posture was no longer slouching, and my body ached less. I felt stronger than I had ever before, even after years of HIIT style workouts. I started to appreciate and love how Pilates changed my body and mind, I felt more connected to myself - reducing my anxiety and depression.”

“I think a lot of people compare Pilates with Yoga and assume it's slow stretching on a machine,” Whitney says about the general consensus of it being ‘easy’ to do. “There is an aspect of stretching on the machine, however Pilates is extremely challenging.

I would say it's harder than a heavy weighted style workout because sometimes, the lighter springs, make the exercise harder. There’s also the element of mindful movement - you have to stay present, stabilising, activating, breathing etc. Pilates will change your life.”

Opening the studio was a long-held dream and a chance for Whitney to preach what she loves most, as well as showing her two young daughters that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Whitney admits watching everyone accomplish their goals and gain strength, both physically and mentally, has made her appreciate her role even more.

“Being a small studio, we all get to know each other and celebrate together,” she says. “Watching friendships forming and the community we have created is amazing! But when someone asks for a challenge, I always

Have you ever wondered how all the trees, plants and flowers got here?

Had a night out with friends, suffering a bit of a hangover? All these vegetables are high in Vitamin C, and help you fight off colds. So, cheers, have a cabbage water on me.

If you have, interesting fact, these people were called ‘plant-hunters’, collecting plants from all around the world. The 17th century saw these adventurous ‘plant-hunters’ exploring the world and bringing home an array of exotic plants. The life expectancy of these men and woman wasn’t long, but their passion for collecting specimens lives on today in you.

PLANT IDENTIFICATION When taking part of a plant into your local nursery for identification, try to include a ‘fresh’ good size part of the plant with leaves, flowers, or fruit. A photo of the plant is helpful, along with the location and how it is growing e.g., a tree or a shrub. Even an expert can have trouble identifying a plant, so as much information as possible provided will help narrow down the type of plant.

Botanist, David Douglas, One of the most famous is Scottish Botanist, David Douglas, who the Douglas Fir is named after. Douglas travelled from England to North America and Hawaii, dying at the age of 35.

The Queensland Herbarium at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coottha, Toowong, is the centre for science and information on Queensland’s plants, animals, and ecosystems. Established in 1859 it houses more than 870,000 plant specimens. The collection contains historically important specimens, including some collected

by Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist who accompanied Captain James Cook in 1770.

VEGETABLE GARDENS From 3500BC to 2000BC, to the present-day, vegetables have been grown.

Staple favourites are leeks, lettuce, cabbage, peas, celery, and onions. The Romans enjoyed broccoli, kale, and cauliflower.

The great thing about growing vegetables is that you don’t need a garden. If you are limited for room, you can grow a large range of vegetables in pots.

Addressing Bribie Island’s sandy soil is simple, just add organic matter like cow manure, compost, and mushroom compost. A green manure crop like mustard seed grown however don’t allow to flower, dig in, helping to build up fertile topsoil.

Sandy soil is acidic and stops the growth of your vegetables, therefore, it is very important to add lime or dolomite. Now you are ready to grow your brassicas,

broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower which are big feeders, so a liquid fertilizer like ‘5 in 1’ every 2 weeks is necessary. When the heads start to appear use a liquid potash every two weeks. Never let these vegetables go short of water.

Vegetables like Wombok or Chinese Cabbage are usually ready in about 8-10 weeks. When the heart begins to appear tie the leaves together.

Cauliflowers like their seedling roots firmed down which will produce a firm head, which is called a curd and like the Chinese Cabbage, fold the leaves over it to protect it from the sun. If they are ready to be picked all at once, do so, otherwise they will bolt. You can blanch your excess and freeze.

When planting out seedlings, water really well and continue to keep moist. When ready to pick, cut off the head before it flowers and then put some slow-release fertilizer like ‘5 in 1’ around the plant. You will then get side shoots appearing on the stem, pick them when they are about 15cms long.

When regrowing these winter vegetables for next season, plant in a different area of the garden. This prevents disease like ‘club foot’ where the roots swell and rot and the plants will fail to grow properly.

That’s why using Lime to sweeten the soil is most important.

Winter is such a beautiful time of the year to fish!

You will be surprised how aggressively Squid will attack that fast-moving jig.

Enjoy fishing and remember to catch only what you need!

We have had lots of reports of good numbers of Winter Whiting in and around the Cockle Banks and some of the deeper holes around Moreton Island. Along with the Winter Whiting, there are still plenty of good quality Dusky Flathead around.

White Patch being one of the prime places to catch some excellent fish. Anglers have been targeting these on soft plastics, shallow diving hard lures and live baits.

Tailor is still in good numbers, especially off Sandstone Point, Red Beach, and Skirmish Point, mainly on the troll with shallow diving hard body lures ranging from 9cm up to 12cm in length. Once you find a School of these, mark it on your Sounder because they school up and you will easily find them again in the same location.

Let it sink until just short of hitting the bottom and lift it with a fast rod tip lift.

Drop the rod whilst winding in the slack and pull the jig towards you, then lift it again quite aggressively. Let the jig sink again for several seconds and repeat the process of a sharp lift. Keep tension on the jig throughout the entire process.

Tailor & Flathead With our perfect winter and good quality water conditions it is time to go out and chase Squid. Squid fishing is to the point where it is completely removed from dragging a $2.00 squid jig from a Servo on conventional tackle. Squid Rods range from 8-9ft in length and are a bit stiffer than Lure Fishing Rods. The first reason is a long cast. The further you can cast, the more Squid you will catch, by simply covering more water. The longer Rod imparts more movement on those upward lifts.

A fast and violent Jig movements that covers the bottom 50% of the water column will attract much more interest.

As a result, the technique involves casting as far as you can over the weed beds, in 4 to 10 metres of water and letting the jig sink deep until just above the bottom.

To do this you will need to do a few test runs and time how long it takes for your chosen jig to sink in the chosen water depth.

Lower leg outboard service The gearbox and propeller are very important parts of your outboard motor and require regular servicing.

STEP 1 Remove the prop split pin or tab washer.

Then undo the prop nut and slide the prop off. Take careful note of which way any tapered thrust washers are fitted; it is very important that they be refitted correctly. With the prop is off it’s a good time to file out any uneven or damaged blade surfaces.

STEP 2 Remove the lower gearbox oil drain plug, then the top oil level plug. If there are any signs of water contamination in the gearbox oil STOP right there!!

It’s now a job for your marine mechanic.

Most outboards have oil seals to keep oil in and water out of the gearshift shaft, driveshaft, and the prop-shaft. Always check the prop-shaft to make sure it has no fishing line wrapped around it, as this can damage the prop-shaft seal.

STEP 3 Now it’s time to visit your local marine dealer. You will need gear oil bottle with pump, new split pin or prop tab washer, new gearbox drain-bung washers and a good quality marine grease. Your local marine dealer will advise you on the right products for the job.

STEP 4 Connect the gear oil pump to the bottom bung hole. Slowly work the pump until oil flows out of the top oil level bung hole.

Filling the gearbox from the bottom up avoids any air pockets and confirms that the gearbox is full. Now put the top bung in first. This creates a vacuum allowing you to remove the gear oil bottle and replace the lower-level bung with minimum oil loss.

STEP 5 Apply a good coating of marine grease on the prop-shaft then refit the propeller.

Job Done, you’re ready to go.

VALE COLONEL RONALD LANGE AM(mil) MID (1929 - 2022) became a commissioned officer in the Royal Australian Infantry rising to Platoon Commander in Papua New Guinea and a Lieutenant Colonel in the transition period leading up to the independence of PNG. The friendships he made throughout his life were more important than the honours he received for his service “in defence of our nation” and his love of, and pride in, his family the most important still.

In response to the issue, council is working through the process of waiving any accrued interest charges for those who have been impacted. Ratepayers will not accrue any additional interest charges as long as the outstanding amount for both quarters are paid before the Q1 due date of August 5, 2022.

A technical issue has been labelled as the culprit for problems with the emailing of council rates notices to ratepayers for the last quarter. It was brought to the attention of council earlier this month, that up to 5000 ratepayers who receive their rates notice by email did not receive their previous rates notice for Q4 2021-22.

This resulted in some ratepayers seeing an overdue balance on their current rates notice for Q1 2022-23.

In today’s feel-good language, price increases on everything are justified as ‘Only a cup of Coffee’.

While households scramble to keep food on the table and the lights on, and small business struggle to keep their doors open, our pollies throw millions of dollars of our money around like confetti.

Suspended with pay, amid integrity allegations, it has been revealed that hundreds of public servants have been ‘suspended with pay’, since the Palaszczuk Government came to power six years ago, with the number of paid suspensions mostly increasing year on year.

It means that since 2015-16, taxpayers have paid $88,000,000 for bureaucrats to do nothing, Last year, 474 public servants were suspended with pay, costing upwards of $22,000,000. Half of them were suspended for three to six months, but others spilt into the next financial year.

The total taxpayer money, OUR MONEY, spent on suspended public servants in 2015-16 was $9,201,987, 2016-17 $9,683,663, 2017-18 $10,258,082, 2018-19 $15,467,679, 2019-20 $21,534,262 and in 2020-21 $22,321,824. A TOTAL of $88,467,497.

This, on top of a report released by the Queensland Council of Social Services, about the gradual rise to our cost of living in Queensland over the last few years.
