I don’t know about you, but I’m relieved the Federal election is now over.

In this Issue we have a variety of great articles. We have a great article on bicycle safety, details of the recent house fire on Bribie Island and our local fireys who saved the home, and very sadly the Bribie Girl Guides closes.

Also in this Issue and the coming Issues, The LOCAL will provide a profile article on each of our staff members. I want you to meet the team behind this publication. First up is Sheree Hoddinett, our senior journalist. There is a lovely bio on her and her career in this region as a journalist.

School holidays have snuck up on us again and Sheree has given you some wonderful suggestions on what you can do in our region with the kids.

Chronic Priorities Isn’t it great that our Queensland Government has its priorities right!

At a time when we are seeing chronic ramping in our hospitals, and in some cases, patients being treated in the back of ambulances or even in the hospital corridors.

At a time where there are chronic shortages of staff to man those hospitals.

At a time when we have chronic bed shortages in those hospitals.

At a time when our Health Minister, Yvette D’Ath, states that she wishes she had a magic wand to fix the problem of those pesky patients dying while waiting for an ambulance.

To distract us from these real grass roots problems though, we have our Premier throwing $700 million to buy a media site for the 2032 Olympics.

The Cost of an Election Since Bob Hawke came to power in March 1983, average inflation under the Labor Governments (4.27% per annum) has been more than double that than under the LNP Governments (1.88%per annum).

Labor’s traditional push for higher wages drives inflation which in turn drives up interest rates.

Historically home mortgage interest rates, under Labor have averaged 11.16%. Whilst under LNP the average has been 6.70%. An historical difference of 4.46%.

Interest rates under Morrison are still low at 2.5% even after the current rise.

Historically performance under Labor means current rates should go up to around 7% within a year (if elected) and by doubling inflation, plus high interest rates they will send Australians broke.

This far outweighs other issues such as, power, fuel and cost of living, currently being used to alarm Australians. Cost of living will increase more as a direct result from the wage and interest rate rises.

The average Queensland home mortgage is currently $480,000.00. Under Labor it is likely to go up by $24,796.00 per year (an extra $415.00 per week).

Mortgages on rental properties currently average $320,000.00 and are likely to increase, under Labor, by $16,502.00 per year (an extra $277.00 per week). Renters will have to pay this alarming extra cost!

Bribie home buyers and renters cannot afford such economic buffoons.

Australians have $1.3 trillion of loan debts. Under Labor’s 4.46% historical additional interest rates, we will be paying an extra $58 billion per year.

Workers would have to receive an additional $300 a week, after tax, to pay the extra mortgage.

You can’t have wages growth without a higher mortgage!

Dear Belinda, Harvey and the elusive Lizard Issue 76 displays the usual example of pathetic meanderings not worthy of the name ‘Journalism’.

‘The Guardian’ and ‘The Centre for Public Integrity’ have the intestinal fortitude to expose our three major political parties' acceptance of millions of dollars in lobbying, neglecting to mention the millions acquired from Gambling, Liquor, Mining etc.

What do we get from our ‘Local’?

Harvey plays the truth game and the Lizard mixes with the animals. How entertaining!

Not a word about the corrupt Liberal Government and Health Minister who refuses, along with the TGA boys, to answer questions about why addictive and dangerous drugs, recalled from sale in USA and Europe, are permitted to be given to trusting and gullible Australians.

An example is the dangerous and addictive drug, OxyContin. The family company that manufactures this rubbish, has, since 2019, seen many in the US commence legal action against them. The company tried to enter bankruptcy to avoid responsibility, however the court refused their dodgy tactics. Claims against the company are in excess of US$12 BILLION and rising.

What has our brilliant caring LNP Government done in the past three years to protect Australians from this addictive suicide provoking drug?

Les Bax

Kay recalls how hard both her parents worked to ensure their family was well looked after. When Les married Mavis, she already had two young daughters. Kay admires her father for the role that he took on and admits she didn’t make it easy to start with, but felt that Les was an amazing man who showered them with love.

Les was close to his grandchildren.

In total he had five granddaughters and 10 great grandchildren.

“Mum and Dad also had a daughter together. She’s 17 years younger than me,” Kay said. “She has two girls (Casey and Caitlin) who were very close with Les. They saw him every day until he passed away.”

Les and Mavis married in 1960

Although based in Sydney, Kay often travelled north to visit her parents. Covid closing borders certainly made an impact on visiting her father over the last two years, but once she was able to get back up here, Kay visited as often as she could.

“There’s so much I could tell you about my Dad,” she said. “He had a charisma about him that people liked. He had friends that were a lot younger than him and he had a personality that people really loved. He loved Scoopy’s, going there every morning. He’d get out of bed, get on his scooter and go meet some of his friends. One of his friends, Big John, that he caught up with regularly, actually passed away two days after Les. He loved fishing and heading out on his boat. He loved telling stories, always having lots to share.

Believe it or not he had a really good voice and was a lovely singer, often singing at weddings when people asked him to. In his day, he actually sang for the Queensland Youth Choir and he also joined the choir at the nursing home. He also liked to drink red wine with me. People would say they knew I was visiting because Dad had a hangover.”

Although Mavis passed away in 2019, Les continued to live on the Island until about 18 months ago before he was hospitalised with a kidney infection, moving into care at Regis Caboolture. Daughter, Kay has many fond memories of her Dad and was proud of the way he adapted his life to his surroundings.

“Mum and Dad lived on the Island for well over 30 years,” Kay said.

“He really loved the place and knew a bit about the history of the Island. He knew about the Cormorant, as he was on the boat which towed it to the Island. Dad had a hard life when he was young.

Back in those days things were

really tough. He talked about his childhood and not feeling loved.

He said Mum was the first person who ever really loved him. His favourite saying was ‘I’ll never give up’ and we’re going to put that on his plaque in the memorial gardens.”

“We did talk about the time where we both sat on the back steps, both of us crying, and he told me how much he loved my mother and how he wanted to give us a good life. And he did give us a good life,” Kay said. “Mum and Dad worked really well together. They saved money and had their first little house and then sold that to build another home. Coming from no money, to what they eventually established, was just a testament of how well they worked together.”

With a charisma and personality that drew others to him, Les Bax lived life to the fullest, making the most of every opportunity that came his way, right up until the end. Sadly, Les passed away on Saturday April 30, aged 89. His affiliation with Bribie Island goes back to long before the Island was even connected via bridge to the mainland (that came along in 1963). A keen fisherman and regular patron at Scoopy’s, his knowledge on some historical aspects of the Island and a love of telling a good story are just some of the many things that made Les the lovable character he was.

Les was born in Childers on September 29, 1932, but it was Bribie that he called home and the place where he met and settled down with his wife Mavis. He first started coming to Bribie in 1958 and was doing a painting job for his Uncle on the Island, when he was invited to eat at the local hotel, known as Bluey’s. Mavis worked at the hotel, romance blossomed and they married in 1960. Although they moved to Geebung for a period of time they continued to visit the Island.

Bribie still beckoned and they later resettled at Bongaree.

My Oh My! You do live in an interesting world. Not many of us see the things that you see.

I required OxyContin in a previous life when, as a Rescue Diver, I suffered a nasty injury during a diving rescue accident. It worked for me! I controlled it, treated it with respect and was able to recover.

I have no comment about the politics of your letter. That is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

Man made Climate Change We are bombarded each day with the ‘crisis’ of climate change. Do we ever stop to ask “What evidence exists to prove that climate change is manmade?” Our climate is changing and has done so for many millions of years. We have scientific evidence of at least six ice ages in between which the climate has warmed and mankind has thrived.

Our current concern for global warming originates with a documentary entitled ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ in which a graph shows the earth’s temperature and the atmosphere’s concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) since 1880. These two quantities rise dramatically in an exponential fashion. The conclusion offered is that by burning coal we are adding to the concentration of the greenhouse gas, CO2 and as a result the earth is warming.

Close inspection of the data used in this documentary shows that increases in temperature sometimes precede increases in levels of CO2.This contradicts the above hypothesis and can be explained by naturally occurring carbon dioxide from volcanoes previously dissolved in the oceans then released as the oceans warm.

The consequence for Australia of shutting down its coal fired power stations producing cheap and reliable energy is immense. Surely this step can only be taken when the science of global warming is fully discussed and proven.

By Sheree Hoddinett It’s the time all parents dread when it comes to entertainment for the kids - school holidays. And once again, it’s fast approaching – June 25 is day one to be precise. While it’s not always the greatest time of year when it comes to the weather (rain, wind, cooler temperatures), there’s still plenty to do both in the great outdoors and indoors if you need a little respite time. If you’re already planning ahead and looking for some ideas to help keep your cherubs somewhat entertained, here’s a few things to help bust the holiday boredom.

While we may be at the start of winter, if your kids are feeling brave enough to dip their toes in the water and it’s warm enough, they can have a swim. Otherwise if the sun is shining, you can take a walk along the beach, play in the sand or enjoy a nice picnic with beautiful seaside views.

Whale Watching It’s time to catch the humpback whales in all their glory as they begin their migration north from mid-June through until November. If you’re lucky enough, you could just catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures from land (headlands or open beaches with binoculars at hand) or on one of the many tours on offer along the coastline. If you haven’t yet experienced whale watching in all its glory, you can’t go past the slap of a fin, a tail wave or the mesmerising power of this large creature when it breaches.

Bribie Butterfly House This is one you have to time well, as they’re only open on a Wednesday and Sunday (10am-4pm). The butterflies love sunny days and are likely to be more active than overcast weather. You’ll find them at 208 First Avenue behind the Orchid Society Hall.

Generational Change: Fundamental to the Human Story My comments are about human beings and the passage of time, which brings about generational change. On these pages, I shall not and never will become embroiled in the intellectual nonsense of definitions of men and women.

Reluctantly or otherwise, one generation of older, experienced humans must give way to the next generation of young, intellectually vigorous but inexperienced humans.

This can be a prickly experience for the older generation when it need not be!

Different cultures of the human race have very different ways of marking this change. Some quite ordinary and some requiring incredible discipline and courage.

For example, we can look at the young Masai men of Kenya. In the past, for them to pass through the tribal portals to manhood/adulthood, they were required to kill a lion with their own spear, on their own! A task that requires much discipline and courage, plus a great deal of listening to advice from the tribal elders, who have already done it. If they fail, they most likely die of their injuries, which was accepted as survival of the fittest. This ritual is no longer practised by the Masai.

Young Inuit men must sit silently, patiently, for hours on ice flows, waiting for the chance to kill a sea lion.

Throughout Third World countries, passage for males to adulthood and thus, change of responsibility, is based upon physical prowess accompanied by discipline and courage.

In the First World, our world, things are a bit different.

Imagine giving young Damian a spear and telling him not to come back until he has killed a crocodile!

I mean, no one is allowed to kill a crocodile unless it is eating you…even then, you will need plenty of paperwork to keep the shiny bums happy!

In our world, we have allowed academia, the media and several other preposterous drongos to define our social structure and our generations.

We have, languishing in the reflected light of the social science beacons, a number of categories of humans.

They are…

The Silent Generation who fought their way through World War II. Before that, they saw a global depression and a flu pandemic. They built the foundations of our freedoms and our lifestyle, but most of them are now nonagenarians, so their opinions don't count for much. Not in the intellectual badlands of academia and the media anyway!

Then there are the Baby Boomers.

Depending upon which perch you are roosted , the Baby Boomers have actually pillaged, plundered, voted, stole, and tricked everyone by stealing their wealth and keeping it to themselves.

The other view is that Baby Boomers were lucky.

They had no choice over the timing of

their birth. They saw an opportunity and worked bloody hard to make their way in a world that was ready to reward people who believed in what they did, paid their taxes, kept a lawful society and built communities based upon mateship and respect.

I shall leave you to determine which view attracts you!

Following close upon the heels of the ‘Boomers’ is the mob known as ‘Generation X’.

The current bosses, prime of life politicians, and professionals who collectively demand and get whatever they want.

‘Generation X’ claim to live in the shadow of the ‘Boomer’ - but they don't!

They are in charge of the place. They make the decisions, distribute the assets, and take responsibility for how the whole place works.

If you like, they are the ‘Boris Johnson’ lot…and I am quoting Libby Purves from The Australian and The Times.

A broad assessment concludes that Generation X does it pretty well.

If we stop, for a moment, on the high ground and look back down the dusty track from which we have come, we can see the throbbing mass of the ‘Millennials’ weaving their way forward and behind them comes an entirely new spectacle – ‘Generation Z’!

‘Generation Z’ are in their early twenties and they have their own view on how things should be and how things should work.

This generation has no comprehension of life without smartphones and accepts that WhatsApp is something old people use! I am paraphrasing Libby Purves from the Australian and the Times, again!

There are no more digital labels left after Generation Z which will pose a problem for the academic labelling team, but that will not be our problem.

As previously mentioned, most Third World countries/societies have ‘boys and men’, ‘girls and women’ and a precise ritual of passage that determines who is actually who.

In our Judeo/Christian society, we have never had those passage rituals. Sure there used to be debutante balls, where young women ‘came out’ into society.

Young males had less clearly defined moments.

Drinking alcohol until they were legless seemed to hold favour for young men becoming ‘a man’ in some quarters. A somewhat hollow arrangement best describes that behaviour.

Graduating from secondary school into the workforce was a defining moment for young men, as was age.

Depending upon various prevailing Government regulations, such as compulsory military service for young men, could undoubtedly be a defining moment.

Perhaps even obtaining a driver's licence for both males and females determined adulthood.

For both males and females, reaching the age of ‘twenty-one’ in our society, during the early 1900s and probably up to the 1960’s, was the defining moment for becoming an adult by law but it is now diluted and not as important.

There were no precise moments of moving from boys to men, or girls to women, in our world, unlike our Third World cousins. Shifting responsibility and assuming adult leadership seemed to occur more like the process of osmosis.

But it happened, and it seemed to be orderly. Responsibility shifted, leadership assumed, and life's ancient rhythms throbbed softly onwards.

So. We are now in the middle of the year 2022.

Our society is riven by shouty mobs on social media, but the application of commonsense will deal with that.

We have become hopelessly entangled in our ability to express ourselves clearly over fundamental matters of biology.

Younger people, Generation Zedders, have

a pragmatic view of these matters. They all know who they are and are not fussed by new definitions, and neither should the older generations.

Older generations have been around long enough to know that the world balances itself. There is always a ‘square up’!

Trying to prevent a younger generation from expressing itself in terms that are different from the current generation's understanding is much like standing on the beach and yelling at the waves to stop it, or they will go blind!

Generation Z is here. They are not going away. They are ours. We need them just as they need us. And although it does not seem like it at times, we still hold all the cards. It is up to us to make sure that change occurs sensibly.

Human beings like to be a part of a proud, functional team. Perhaps some of the tensions result from young people sensing that they are not!

deadline is looming quickly. Anyone who is a Director of a Pty Ltd company must register for a Director Identification Number before 30 November 2022.

The Director Identification Number (DIN) is to prevent companies appointing fictitious directors. The number can be used to trace all associated Directorships.

Individuals wishing to become a Director will have to confirm their identity before being issued a DIN. Even if you resign from a company, this number remains in existence should you wish to be re-elected for the same company or a different company. The DIN also applies to Directors of Charities that are registered companies.

The 21-year-old from Beachmere, has been a volunteer with the Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers group (MBFAV) for the last three years, having joined as soon as she turned 18 back in 2019.

Kiah’s future goal is to become a paramedic after recently completing her University degree. She also combined this with working as an Assistant in Nursing at a children’s hospice, as well as tackling her volunteer role with MBFAV. With an energy and positive outset way beyond her young age, Kiah’s determination will put her in good stead to reach her goal in no time.

“There’s a lot of people in this group with experience and they’re always keen to help you, plus they understand we’re all young and still learning, so it’s nice of them to take us on board,” she says. “They (MBFAV) definitely have a lot of support for new people, especially if you have never been in first aid before. I had a little bit of experience because of starting Uni at the time, but not much in first aid, so it was a really good boost because it meant I gained a little bit of experience outside of Uni as well. I highly recommend volunteering, especially if you’re already in that field studying or working, even if it’s just once a week. There’s so many events going on that even just once a month, it’s easy to slip something into your schedule.”

Kiah’s foray into the volunteering world began when she was still at school, helping out with a youth group and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh program.

She highlights the importance of creating a balance between the social and work aspects of life, while helping out within the local community.

“It’s pretty normal for me to help out, so volunteering is just a part of life for me,” she says. “I volunteer to get more experience and because I enjoy doing it. It creates a good feeling, a sense of accomplishment and achievement and it doesn’t feel like work but you’re still helping people. It’s about giving something back and people are really thankful because you’re putting your time in there and not doing it to get paid.”

Studying to become a paramedic, Kiah knew she wanted to get involved in a first aid group to back up her studies and further her experience. Although she had to wait until she was 18 to take on a role, that didn’t stop Kiah from researching her options.

“I actually found MBFAV online through a Google search,” she says. “I saw their website and thought they looked really fun and they were looking for people at the time. They had a section asking for volunteers, so I sent an enquiry before I turned 18. They were really keen for me to join, so it was a quick process and before I

With Kiah preparing to undertake a medic course, thanks to MBFAV to further develop her skills, she couldn’t speak more highly of the group which has been a great support to her aspirations.

“I really encourage other people out there, either young people or those studying at Uni, to not be afraid to join and volunteer,” Kiah says. “Give it a go! I didn’t know anyone there when I first started, and it was a bit scary but they were all very welcoming and very accepting. It’s been a great experience for me.”

The Writer, the Mum and the real Person

long and fulfilled life, that really gets my writing blood flowing.

“Writing is easy….when you know how.”

I knew early on, hard news wasn’t my forte, after covering some pretty sad and confronting stories that I will never forget. Knocking on someone’s front door after they have lost a loved one or the death of a young child in traumatic circumstances aren’t easy subjects to cover. But it’s all shaped me into the writer I am now and I wouldn’t change a thing. It might be a different story on a bad day!

Becoming a writer was a long-standing dream I’d had since I was about 10-years-old. What kind of writer was always up in the air, until the time came to choose my university preferences. At the time I blindly selected journalism, not quite realising or even understanding the journey that was ahead of me.

My start in the real world of journalism brought me, somewhat fresh faced, to the news/community desk at the Caboolture News/Bribie Weekly and Island & Mainland News (including the Sunshine Coast Daily), in 2008.

Some of you may even remember me from my time at those publications!

I’m more than happy to admit that even with a university degree, I learnt more on the job, back in those early days, than I did at University. We covered all aspects of news, sport, court, festivals and so much more.

Being in a community-based environment, I quickly discovered my passion and enjoyment for tackling feature

Not only do you get to see my efforts here in this paper, but I’m also a writer with Feature Magazine, also based locally in the Moreton Bay Region.

But wait there’s more…I contribute to a school magazine in Narangba, do online business blogging for multiple outlets, write my own personal blogs, contribute to an online parenting magazine and also tackle a bit of editing work as well. Now that I’ve put it all out there, it is quite a lot, but it keeps me on my toes! stories, especially with those of the older generation. For me, there was (and still is!) something about sitting down with someone who has lived a

who are definitely going to be strong and independent women one day.

That’s what their attitudes tell me already anyway, ha!ha! I’m still trying to work out where they get it from… must be their father, right?! We are based on the ‘other side’ of the bridge, however I’m definitely no stranger to Bribie, having spent a lot of time visiting the Island from my early years and into my adult life.

In my ‘spare’ time - there is actually a little bit of it - I also manage to get to a Pilates class here and there, take my girls to karate and if we have any time left over, maybe a walk or fun dancing around in the yard…when it’s not raining of course! Just a crazy little side bit about me too, I love building Lego and doing puzzles. I feel it uses a different creative side of my brain that doesn’t need words or my subtle humour! That’s pretty much me in a nutshell! Well, as much as I can fit in a smallish story. My whole life on the other hand, could take more than one edition of the paper and no one wants to see that!

If I haven’t had the chance to meet you yet, you never know, I could be out there telling your story sometime soon.

Beachmere supports Biggest Morning Tea

Locals turned out to support the BMT event

Recently, the Beachmere Hub was the venue for more than 100 guests in aid of the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea. Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) hosted the event as a High Tea with tickets selling out well before the day.

BANG Committee Member, Mary Brown, said that previous High Tea events at the Hub had a great reputation, so a large turnout had been expected.

“We thought our High Tea would be well supported, but to have a sell out event so quickly was a great surprise. We were very grateful for all those who worked so hard to get things ready and all the wonderful volunteers on the day. A special thanks to all the supporters and sponsors who donated raffle items and to Rebecca from local boutique ‘Seaweed & Sandals’ who organised the Fashion Parade. We raised nearly $4,000 and hope to make the High Tea an annual event,” Mary said.

Beachmere Comes Together to Meet Their Councillors Over two years ago Beachmere was split into two Council divisions.

Previously the entire area of Beachmere was included in Division 2. However, with boundary changes, Beachmere was split across two divisions. The June BANG Forum has invited both Division 1 Councillor, Brooke Savage and Division 2 Councillor, Mark Booth to address the residents.

The BANG June Forum will be held on Tuesday, 21 June at 6pm at the Beachmere Hub, Main St, Beachmere.

Changes ahead for U3A Beachmere Prior to the election of the 2022 Management Committee, chaired by Mark Tucker-Evans CEO of COTA (Council of the Aging), U3A Beachmere outgoing President, Barb Woodroffe presented attendees with a report on the past year’s activities and progress, including social and administrative highlights.

A proposal to adopt amendments to the current constitution was put to the meeting and accepted unanimously. Updates were necessary to bring U3A Beachmere in line with recent Queensland Government legislative changes. The amended constitution is available to view on the U3A Beachmere Inc website.

Outgoing Treasurer, Jo Carpenter, presented an extensive financial report together with the independent auditor’s report. Jo also reported that despite the challenges of Covid related obstacles, the organization has had a successful financial outcome for the 2021 operating year.

Two positions remain vacant: Course Coordinator and Communications/ Publicity Coordinator.

We continue to search for members to fill these two positions. Detailed job descriptions are on our website, www. u3abeachmere.org.au, located under AGM on the menu.

Before closing the meeting re-elected President Barb Woodroffe, thanked outgoing Committee members Chris Sutton, Helen Murphy, Christine Ellis, Di Newell and Jennifer Blanchard for their hard work and dedication. They were acknowledged as having worked tirelessly in trying times to achieve a positive result. Without their dedication and support the organisation may not have continued.

The newly elected committee is excited to bring energy, enthusiasm and passion to U3A Beachmere for 2022/23.

Earlier this month, it was all action in Warringal St, Bellara, with an early morning house fire that brought residents out onto the street. The fire started in the garage, destroying a couple of cars. Fortunately, it was contained to the bottom levels of the building and brought under control using a compressed air foam system. However, smoke damage was extensive in the upper levels. No one sustained any injuries during the incident.

What an Outcome Well done, and a hearty congratulations to Terry Young, who has been elected to serve our Longman community for another three year term. A huge thank you to our LNP volunteers who did a trojan job.

It was a very difficult pre-poll, with significant intrusions from multiple unions and blatant and delusional Labor lies in every form of media and consistent sledging on the booth. It was also extremely disappointing, on election eve, to see our Bribie Islander Magazine print a full page front cover in support of Fanning and how to vote for Labor.

We did maintain our dignity and the positivity that aligns with Terry as a Member. Voting day was unbelievable! Conditions were wet, cold and just plain awful, so again I would like to say a big 'thank you' to all the voters who supported us in such trying circumstances.

To add to the mix, we had Ali King grace us with her presence for an hour. Obviously her main purpose was to slag the LNP. Did she say anything in support of Fanning, (let's be honest, what if anything positive, was there to say in support of her)? No, our Ali spent the whole time shouting at voters to ‘Kick Morrison Out’. Such class!

I had hoped, as actually seeing her here on Bribie, that this was an

opportunity to ascertain what was happening about this alleged 'hospital'. However, when pressed on when it might be built, she just turned her back on me and continued her manic shouting.

Moving on, we know with Terry's record over the past three years, in making this Community a better place in which to live, work and raise a family, that he will be working hard for us.

We wish him well in his endeavours and know that at least Federally we are in good hands.

Sometimes life deals a rotten card to some.

Zak Bowers was born with an acquired brain injury which would seriously affect his future ability to walk. Medicos predicted that he would never be able to walk, however his loving parents, Jeff Burnet and Karen Bowers refused to accept this diagnosis and with their help and encouragement, Zak was walking by the age of six.

At an early age Zak attended the Caboolture Special School where he became a popular student. Gaining a Wheelchair Operators Licence, he would steer wheelchair bound students around the campus.

This generosity of spirit would not go unnoticed as Zak grew older. Angela Blinco lived in the same Bribie street as Zac’s family and noted his good manners and helpful nature. “Even as a young boy Zak would willingly help people around the neighbourhood,” Angela remembers.

Witnessing him growing into a fine young man and with the advent of the NDIS scheme, she was appointed as Zak’s support worker.

Zak has a special love of horses, which led him to gain a Stable Hand’s Licence. This qualification permits him to enter stables to groom, feed and exercise horses, which he regularly does at local stables and at trotting meets at the Redcliffe and Albion Park Paceways. Local football also features as one of Zak’s interests, where he assists the Bribie Island Juniors Rugby Leagues Club in various capacities.

by Amelia Strazdins Climate change is currently one of the most significant challenges facing Australia and the world. It has played a contentious part in our recent election and there have been calls on Local, State, and Federal levels for proactive changes. This issue has amassed support around the globe, from non-profits to businesses, pledging themselves to a greener future.

However, despite such support, the problem continues to grow. The threats we face no longer consist of losing acres of land to development. Future generations face an unrecognisable planet without species, such as bees and with waterways polluted with plastics. Global Environment Day is a United Nations initiative dedicated to raising awareness about environmental protection. On the 5th of June each year events and campaigns are run globally to help increase knowledge about what we can do locally to help support our environment.

Australia is known for its beautiful beaches, much like Bribie Island.

Around the country we have some of the world’s oldest, largest rainforests, beautiful waterways and native flora and fauna. Living on Bribie we are lucky enough to experience many of these environmental wonders simply by stepping out of our front doors.

Thus lies the question, how do we protect our local environment? Bribie already has an organisation aimed at ensuring environmentally friendly tourism practices and safeguarding our Island’s environment. This group titled the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association, or more commonly BIEPA, has a number of active projects occurring around the Island. From turtle monitoring to helping reduce marine debris. These plans focus on regeneration, reconstruction, and resilience to ensure long-lasting ecosystems and habitats.

Usually, BIEPA organises local events to promote environmentalism and protection, however this year a slightly

different approach has been taken. In 2022, BIEPA is supporting an initiative taken by the Sunshine Coast Environmental Council (SCEC).

This year, within our region, the Council is hosting a month-long program with numerous activities and events titled ‘World Environmental Day Festival’. These eighteen events will be held across the coast from Noosa to Coolum, all aimed at encouraging community activism and involvement.

As community members these activities are local, accessible, and directly assist in rejuvenating areas utilised by us. Attending these events not only shows support for the environment but also the organisations that fight so hard to protect it. These organisations are often non-for-profit, consisting of volunteers with minimal, if any, governmental support. By showing up, we help fund these organisations and their plans for an environmental based future. Even if you are unable to attend any of these events, support can still be shown. The BIEPA website provides options to both donate to their cause and also the ability to volunteer to assist with their projects.

More details regarding BIEPA, and the events hosted by the SCEC can be located on each of the organisations’ websites.

Although this issue may be overwhelming, approaching it at a local level provides a foundation for sustainable communities and proactive organisations, such as BIEPA. It is through this work that change can be achieved at a greater level. Raising awareness about these environmental threats is the key to development.

Community support displays the importance of the matter to politicians, to organisations and most importantly to other people on our Island. We are fighting to protect the environment, for us and our future generations.

We are also fighting to preserve the diversity, life, and beauty that nature brings to our planet. This is our fight for the future.

What would you think is the most important aspect of living in the Moreton Bay region for most people?

Cost of living? Safety and security?

Access to vital services? Availability of recreational activities?

You’d be right in thinking that these are very important to most people, however according to Moreton Bay Regional Council’s recent Moreton Says Anchor survey, residents’ top concern is environmental preservation. According to the survey ratings, the natural beauty of the region is the most important attribute, regardless of where participants live in the region, their employment status or gender, 90% of residents indicating this is a ‘very important’ or ‘extremely important’ role for Council.

However, only 18% of residents indicated they were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with Council’s performance in this area.

To add to the concern, reports from both Commonwealth and State governments have identified our area as particularly vulnerable to the impacts

of climate change.

Imagine what Caboolture would be like if temperatures increased by 4 degrees and rainfall decreased by over 20%. This is what one CSIRO report concludes will happen unless more action to combat climate change is taken immediately.

And what if, as State government modelling suggests, local sea levels rose by 0.8 metres, enough to swamp the beaches in our seaside communities and flood thousands of homes.

We are already experiencing more frequent, severe droughts, bushfires and floods. These will affect not just our families but also the 200,000 more residents expected to come to our region in the next 30 years.

Some of us think that what our Council is doing to combat the threat of climate change simply isn’t good enough. So late last year we kicked off the Moreton Climate Action Now campaign. Since then it has gained support from individuals, groups and businesses, all interested

in ensuring the beauty and diversity that defines the local area are protected for future generations and the region thrives as a livable, sustainable environment for everyone.

From gardens to gum trees, lifestyles to lizards, and trash to turtles, MoretonCAN’s supporters are working to encourage and help Council to do more, urgently, to mitigate the impacts of climate change on more than 800 species of native animals, on the native vegetation that covers more than half of the region, on the 9,000 hectares of internationally significant wetlands – and on our families and all we cherish.

“But what can I do?”, you might say.

Cyclists must give way to pedestrians on a footpath or shared paths Have you ever been out strolling along the Bribie foreshore only to be pushed off the path by an oncoming cyclist? The other morning, we were going for our usual morning walk, when a lady in her late sixties was coming toward us on her three-wheeler. She was motoring at a good turn of speed and had that determined look. There was no way she would give way or even slow down as we jumped off the path to safety.

Little did she know that she had a responsibility to give way and to ensure our safety and that of all other pedestrians. It is not an uncommon problem, yet others do slow down and are very careful, some leaving the pathway to ensure our safety or even ringing their bell if approaching from behind. While it is about common sense and mutual respect, cyclists need to remember that they could cause a severe injury if they hit a pedestrian. In addition, pedestrians may not see you or hear you and could make an unexpected turn directly into your path. Therefore, it would be advisable for cyclists to slow down when approaching pedestrians to ensure they can give way and ensure their safety.

Cyclists who fail to give way to pedestrians on a footpath or shared path are liable to a fine of $137.

Bicycle Helmets Bribie's non-wearing of bicycle helmets seems widespread and not limited to a few young boys and girls, but many older residents also disregard this law. Having grown up in a time long before safety helmets and when we didn't wrap our children and citizens in cotton wool, I can empathise with riders. More so in a Bribie environment, where part of the attraction to the Island is the casual lifestyle. After all, nothing beats the sense of freedom and the wind blowing through your hair as you enjoy your ride.

That said, an unexpected accident and a nasty fall on your head can be fatal, or the long-term recovery from head trauma can be life-changing for you and your family.

A hit to the head, without a helmet, may result in months in bed, losing your job, lost opportunities, strain on relationships and a huge cost to you, your family, and the State.

A recent study into the effects of bicycle helmets on injuries showed bicycle helmets reduce head injury by 48%, serious head injury by 60%, traumatic brain injury by 53%, face injury by 23%, and the total number of killed or seriously injured cyclists by 34%. The study analysed the metadata of 55 previous studies between 1989 – 2017, providing very compelling reasons why bicycle helmets should be worn. Whatever your views, we must all respect the law, which requires anyone riding a bicycle or an electric-powered wheeled recreational device or personal mobility device like a rideable to wear an Australian Standard approved bicycle helmet.

Failure to do so could result in a fine of $137 unless you have a medical exemption. Children are also subject to the same penalties.

Night-time visibility I have recently seen cyclists riding at night with no helmet and no lights, and it is nothing short of an accident waiting to happen. Even lights in front and back of your bike don't guarantee your visibility in the dark, so extra care is required.

Maybe night riders should consider wearing one of those bright reflective fluoro jackets to aid visibility.

Cyclists who don't have the proper lighting on their bikes could earn a fine of $137.

Mobile Phones Using a mobile phone while on a bicycle is a big NO, NO, and can incur the same penalty as if you were driving a motor car. Currently, a fine of $1,033 applies.

There are no demerit points deducted.

The penalties apply to both adults and children.

Bottom line, your full attention is required when riding. Holding a mobile phone in your hand or resting on any part of your body is illegal, including when stopped in traffic. However, the phone does not need to be on to be an offence.

You can use hands-free, if your phone is in a cradle or in a pocket, but you must not look at or touch your phone.

In conclusion This article is not about knocking cycling but encouraging safer cycling. So, all I ask if you are a cyclist, please be considerate of other road users, particularly for the safety and security of pedestrians as they are vulnerable.

And could include the education and development of safe cycling practices, the greater use of roadways by cyclists and encouraging more children to cycle to and from school.

Abbey Medieval Festival back with Fun and Fare

Come one and all, over yonder to the grounds of Abbeystowe for the 2022 Abbey Medieval Festival (July 9 and 10).

After an unscheduled two year hiatus brought on by Covid, the festival is back and promises to be a grand event for all who enter through the prestigious gates. From jousters to Turkish oil wrestlers, dance workshops and re-enactments, with tasty medieval fare to sample, you won’t want to miss a second of being transported back to the Middle Ages.

For Abbey Museum and festival director Edith Cuffe, the prospect of having visitors make their way through the gates once again, is both an exciting and unnerving experience.

“We are really excited to be back,” she said. “There’s a little trepidation in there as well. When you haven’t done an event for two years and then you have to start again and put everything back in place, it’s a big effort to do that. In saying that, I think it’s great that we are able to do it and welcome everyone back again. We’re really looking forward to it.”

This year’s festival almost wasn’t going to happen, but after the board shared their decision with Moreton Bay Regional Council, an offer of support was extended to ensure the festival goes ahead for the next two years.

“As a board, we had made the decision in January not to go ahead this year because we were concerned that if we were to cancel again, it would leave the museum in a precarious financial position,” Ms Cuffe said. “When we informed the Council of our decision, they stepped in and offered support for the festival for the next two years. So,

we are enormously grateful to them for doing that and for the Council recognising the significant benefits of the festival to the region to help us out.”

With visitors expected from across Queensland and also interstate, this year’s festival has a little bit of everything for everyone.

“Our festival is targeted for people of all ages,” Ms Cuffe said. “We have a lot of our usual aspects including jousters from Queensland and also News South Wales.

“We have Turkish Oil Wrestlers, Viking displays, dancing music, all those sorts of things we’ve had in the past. But some of our groups are thinking outside the box , so we’ll have a few new fun things as well. One of the things we are having this year is a traditional Ottoman wedding followed by an Ottoman banquet. Anyone who wishes to watch the wedding is more than welcome to come along. It’s going to be great.”

The kids certainly haven’t been forgotten about either.

“We will have our ‘Kids Kingdom’ at the festival, which is an area for the kids to do things like arts and craft and take part in medieval games, there is lots to do,” Ms Cuffe said.

“We also have a ‘Medieval Family Fun’ week coming up in the first week of the next school holidays (June 27-July 1).

This will be very kid focussed and there will be lots of medieval activities and fun for everyone.”

The first Abbey Medieval Festival took place back in 1989 and Ms Cuffe has been a part of the entire journey. While she doesn’t have a favourite part of the

festival, she does enjoy the different aspects it creates.

“I think I love the sense of festival,” she said. “One of the things we have always tried to do is, when people go in through the gate it is like stepping back in history. I love that sense of festival that is in there when people and visitors are walking around. They’re happy, they’re enjoying themselves, they’re learning because there are so many different things for them to see and do. We also do have an incredible team of support with our volunteers who are able to provide that level of experience. That’s probably one of my favourite things that sense of joy and celebration that we see our visitors engaging in.”

Final preparation and set-up is expected to commence two weeks out from the festival with organisers already crossing

their fingers the rain stays away and it’s nothing but blue sunny skies.

“We’ve had more than enough rain,” Ms Cuffe said with a laugh. “We sincerely hope that the sky gets it all out of its system and come the festival we have beautiful clear skies and lots of opportunity for people to get out and make merry medieval. We’ve seen lots of support from fans and people buying tickets already and we are very grateful to have that support leading up to the festival.”

With less parking than previous years, attendees are encouraged to utilise the park and ride service, as well as joining the fun on the Sunday of the event with Saturday usually the popular choice.

The Abbey Medieval Festival is on Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10 with gates open from 8.30am at 1-63 The Abbey Place, Caboolture. A medieval banquet is being planned for later on this year.

Bribie Girl Guides Closes

Noelene Gorman Noelene Gorman, a long time Bribie Island resident, was first introduced to Girl Guides in Caboolture in 1949.

She loved it! Little did she know then that Guides was to become one of her life passions, where she would make many fabulous friendships and be actively involved in leadership development, teaching life skills, attending many camps around Australia, and international travel.

In 1970, Noelene came to Bribie following a failed marriage with three children to raise. When her daughter turned 7, she wanted her to be exposed to the benefits Girl Guides had to offer. So, she contacted Guide headquarters, commenced training, found an assistant and opened Bribie Girl Guides in 1972.

There weren't many sporting clubs or activities for young people back then, so Bribie Girl Guides quickly became very popular.

By 1980 they had 80 girls involved in Brownies, Guides and Rangers, meeting in the ‘hut’ on Webster Street. The ‘hut’, purchased for $2,500, was formerly the Toll Master's residence, originally located on the mainland side of the bridge, before being moved to where it sits today. The top level of the ‘hut’ accommodates 28 double-decker bunks, which could potentially be used to assist some of our local homeless, now that the Guides have vacated the building.

In those early days, Noelene would enlist the help of the newly arrived bank manager's wife, the milkman's wife, the baker's wife, the butcher's wife, and the chemist's wife, to help with fundraising and leadership, and in turning the local baker's sponges into the now-famous Girl Guide Lamingtons. As a result, many great friendships were formed.

As the picture below shows, the Guides also played a significant part in the annual ANZAC day parades.

Sadly, after more than 50 years of service, the Bribie Island Girl Guides have closed their doors, after playing an important part in many local girls' lives, establishing strong values, teaching life skills, bushcraft, and leadership development. The group has struggled to get leaders and new members with competition from many competing activities and the increasing costs of membership and insurance.

Interestingly, Girl Guides is undertaking a resurgence in some parts of Australia. This resurgence is seen as Guides being directly relevant in affirmative action and developing young people to be more assertive and prepare them to take more senior leadership roles in our community.

The Colours of Democracy Like many of our National and State institutions that are under pressure in our modern age, the system of voting in Federal elections needs some careful scrutiny.

Cranky Lizard visited over 12 polling booths in the region, to sip the air and feel the atmosphere surrounding one of freedom's most precious gifts.

The right to vote for your Government.

It was a colourful experience.

Huddled in globulous masses were the yellow mob, promising freedom forever!

Circling around the doors of polling booths were the red mob, promising whatever you wanted as long as you voted for them! There was the blue mob promising responsibility for everything, especially money. They moved seamlessly amongst the red mob, disputing absolutely everything the red mob said and vice versa!

There were some shadowy figures, not a mob, dressed in white. They did not say anything and looked embarrassed to be there. There was the green mob, predicting everything would be drowned by the end of the week as the oceans rose ferociously over everything.

Then there were ‘official’ people wearing purple, telling everyone where to stand and asking questions about your origins – like "Are you from interstate or outside the electorate?”, and depending on your answer, you would receive further instructions.

The purple mob were doing the best they could with a broken machine. They deserve community respect for their work!

Cranky Lizard was impressed by the calmness and willingness to help.

But Cranky Lizard looked at all the posters, signs, T-shirts, and banners and concluded that a layer of nonsense had fallen across the system.

The constant muzzling, dancing, eye-rolling, lily pad hopping, ego-stroking, eye glancing, mealy-mouthed, disrespectful fiction was all on display (sharp eyes might see a clue here…!).

And yet, there they are. It was blatantly misleading.

Cranky Lizard was stunned into immobility as normal looking Australians walked past and took these ridiculous pieces of paper. Some even nodding in agreement!

It was apparent to Cranky Lizard that occupying specific spaces around the polling booth had assumed an importance beyond usual reason.

Narrow paths leading to the polling booth building entrance were lined with campaign workers leaning forward and thrusting election material into the faces of the poor buggers who were trying to get to the polling booth.

Voters were not enjoying this experience, however it continued with desperation etched in the faces of those thrusting. It seemed as if their very existence depended upon the voting result.

Cranky Lizard has seen union officials in major shopping centre car parks, pestering shoppers with their electoral Labor Party nonsense. How desperate is that!

Aggression and bullying were apparent amongst the ranks of the Union troops mobilised in support of the red shirt mob. Cranky Lizard noted that much of their effort was directed at voters who appeared a bit vulnerable, as a tall, strong man moved through the red mob toward the door of one polling booth, election material was thrust at him, a clear shake of his head made his intention obvious as he moved undisturbed through the mob.

No union bullying for him!

And aggression and bullying are not the sole provinces of the union movement.

It is a matter of conjecture why aggression is a part of the electoral process, but it is and has been for a number of years.

Cranky Lizard knows that if there were an opportunity to do so, many hundreds of voters would be pleased to detail their experience of this sort of behaviour at polling booths. Many hundreds indeed!

Cranky Lizard asks, “How can a political party promise to deliver freedom forever.”

The issue here is that many Australians have come to expect the bullying and aggression at polling booths. Hence the mass move to the early polling system, but that too has now fallen foul of the aggression.

And be taken seriously? How?

So, what to do?

Well, before a problem can be fixed, it must be accepted that there is a problem.

And for some, that will be hard because from what Cranky Lizard could see, some were enjoying throwing their considerably large bums around, assuming that they were far more important than they really were.

But that is a given for human behaviour.

Offered the opportunity to act like buffoons, many will leap at the chance!

Cranky Lizard sees a glaring anomaly here. Major political parties spend hundreds of thousands of dollars pursuing personal votes. They assume, rightly so, that each voice is important.

Having spent the money convincing the voter to attend the poll and express their will, they find that the voter is so overwhelmed by the hysterical nonsense that they become angry and waste their vote by not following the preferential numbering system. Or they just throw their ballot paper into the bin, crossed out, but no longer a formal vote.

All the money, time and effort wasted!

Wasted ballots happen more than you think and more than you can know!

Cranky Lizard is aware that many voters are unhappy with the ‘compulsory’ aspect of the voting process. This is a legacy from the very early days of the voting system. It was a Labor initiative.

Many of the early voters were country workers. They were often given the day off, to go into the town from the properties, to enable them to vote.

Obviously, there were those who decided that a day at the pub was better than waiting in the lines to vote. So many did just that! Spent the day in the pub catching the horse and buggy back to the property. Very happy indeed. Bugger the idea of voting.

The union bosses were cranked off about this. They assumed, even demanded that the workers voted for the labor candidate rather than spend the day in the pub. So ‘compulsory’ voting came about.

Even that turned out to be messy. The laws were drafted in such a fashion that it was compulsory to go to the polls and have your name checked off the list of eligible voters. Having done that, you were then given the ballot paper, but you did not have to vote. You could turn the thing into a glider and send it across the room if you wished. The important thing was that your name was crossed off the list, proving your attendance at the polls.

It was all a bit clumsy as there was still plenty of time to go to the pub, before or after going to the polling booth.

And that system still applies today.

Including the bit about the pub!

There is also annoyance about the preferential system. It has become complicated, often rendering voters' intentions informal because of the numbering sequence.

Cranky Lizard has no doubt that the preferential system has allowed all sorts of weirdness into the Senate. There are people who make a living out of manipulating the Senate preferences resulting in……well, you know, you can see it every day, if you take the trouble to look.

The most serious development for our voting system is that the process has lost dignity.

There is no dignity in the screeching, yelling, paper waving mob at the polls.

There is no dignity in the union apparatchiks patrolling shopping car parks, harassing people going shopping, with bits of writing about the Labor party.

No dignity at all.

If there is an institutional process in our democracy that should remain protected and dignified, it is the process of voting for a Government.

Store manager, Krystal Pembroke is part of a team of dedicated staff who will assist you and help you find the right products to suit your needs.

“We have a small team of four at the moment,” Krystal said. “I love seeing a team grow and develop, but at the moment we’re still building on things, especially being new to the area. They’re all Occupational Therapy students, so they have that medical experience and they’re great on the floor with our customers. We also have a fully qualified OT on the team so she can come in and assist our customers as needed.”

Leading the team comes naturally to Krystal, who has an extensive retail background and a focus on providing

and maintaining the best in customer service.

“I have a genuine love of helping people,” she said. “Just having that oneon-one with people. When you work in retail it’s a very high paced and fast moving environment, so you don’t get that single focus. I do genuinely care about the customer experience and we’re taking that time to get them what they want and they’re leaving happy. Being able to spend that quality time with a person and having that nice feeling when a customer leaves and you know you have helped them, it’s really satisfying.”

The range of products available includes, but is not limited to, mobility aids and accessories, physio equipment, beds, lift chairs, daily living aids and more.

“We have a lot of people who come in browsing and don’t realise what we have, until they start looking around and they are amazed by what’s available in our store,” Krystal said.

“Our living aids are very popular, along with shower and toilet aids.

These are often the things you don’t think about until you’re trying to do something and it’s difficult. We want

people to know there is help out there you can access to make life that little bit easier.”

So being relatively new in the local area, what can we expect to see longterm from the team at Independent Living Specialists Morayfield?

“Our long term goal is to establish a really great reputation in the community and just to make sure we’re doing everything that we can to our 100% best,” Krystal said. “Of course we want to boost our business but if we’re not doing things properly and not making our customers happy, then there’s no point.

When it comes to selling products, I feel building rapport with customers as well as being genuine and honest is really important. If I think something will or won’t suit their needs, I’ll tell them. I think people appreciate the honesty. We want our customers to return. It’s not about money, it’s about giving them what they need.”

Independent Living Specialists have equipment you can buy or hire. They also have a service team based outside of the Morayfield store (Virginia). So for customers who need equipment to be serviced, the team will assist

you and make the necessary arrangements with you. Independent Living Specialists is also a registered NDIS provider.

“We field a lot of phone call enquiries.

Even if we’re not busy in the store, we’re on the phone helping customers,” Krystal said. “We undertake a lot of quotes which are no obligation and we help people with their NDIS process as well.

We highly recommend people to come in and try out things like scooters and walkers to ensure they match what they need them for.”

Independent Living Specialists also have stores located in Kippa Ring, Coorparoo and Robina, as well two other new stores in Ipswich and Capalaba, which have opened in the last three months along with the Morayfield store.

Hi Gardeners, What diverse weather we have been having! Is Winter ever coming?

Although I'm not a fan of really cold weather. You will see me here, in the nursery, with a warm hat, fingerless gloves, and at least four layers of clothing, we Leo’s like our warm weather! However, we do need the cold weather to set flowers, and get those great Winter veggies flourishing.

I’d like to be suggestive. How about a hedge? Great for borders, screens or just plain privacy!

LARGE Magnolias, Syzygiums (various), Callistemons, Cupressus leylandii and Xanthostemon ‘Golden Penda’.

HYDRANGEAS With beautiful large round flower heads borne all over the plant in late Spring and early Summer, this plant comes in shades of pink, blue, white and is now available with two-toned flowers. The humble Hydrangea can be grown just about anywhere, but is easiest in semishade here, through our hot Queensland summers. With a little extra care, such as composting, mulching and watering, they can be grown in sunny spots.

Before you plant, look for the right location, then look at the soil. Hydrangeas perform best in semi-shaded, nutrient-rich, well-drained soil which holds moisture. Whatever your soil type, dig in a good wheel-barrow load of compost before you plant. If you have clay soil add gypsum as well. Pruning at the end of summer when the flowers are finished, will enhance growth.

You can select the colour of your Hydrangea. They have the ability to switch colour according to the pH of the soil.

Here’s what you do: Use a soil pH test kit to check your soil pH. Mauve and blue flowers are produced at soil pH of 4.5-5.5, plum hues at pH 5.5-6, and pinks and reds at pH6-7.

To lower the pH, add sulphur or use a product called Hydrangea blueing. To increase pH, add lime or Hydrangea pinking agent. The amount needed depends on your soil type and your pH. Always add less rather than more to start with.

To intensify colour and maintain your desired pH, add Hydrangea blueing and pinking agents to water and pour over the soil. Colour changes take time. In fact, some hydrangeas stay the same colour regardless of pH, including whites and some new varieties of blue, pink and red.

It’s wise to buy a colour you like. Often the displayed colour is that variety’s most impressive colour.

Channel 16 is the international Emergency Channel. Should you ever hear a ‘Mayday’ call, stop and take down all details. You might be the closest vessel or pick up some details that other vessels or land based station miss. You could save someone’s life!

You’re going boating for the day, how lucky are YOU! Here are some helpful tips from Peter McNamara, Radio Officer at VMR Bribie Island to make your day even better.

• Ensure someone at home knows where you are going and has ready access to your vessel and trailer details including your mobile number.

• ‘Log On’ with your nearest VMR or Coast Guard from your departure point.

• If you are a member of a VMR or Coast Guard they will have your vessel details and after confirming that they have the right vessel you will be asked the following:- Where are you departing from? What is your destination? How many POB’s on board, include those for young children and/or pets? What is your estimated return time? They will also ask for confirmation of the last three digits of your mobile phone on board.

• If you are not a member of a VMR or Coast Guard the following information is required:- Name of Vessel, Rego

Number, Type of vessel, Color, Length and your full mobile phone number.

Once you have passed these details on they will be stored in their computer systems for future reference. You will then be asked the standard departure questions as above.

Should your return time be delayed or your wish to extend time offshore, it is important to advise the same VMR or Coast Guard. Failure to do so deems your return overdue and could spark a full-scale search, involving Water Police, Helicopters, VMR and Coast Guards, if you cannot be contacted.

Should you alter your location from the original advised when you ‘logged on’, please notify the same VMR or Coast Guard of your new destination. Again, if your return is overdue and a search is deemed necessary, your rescue will be focused on your notified location.

After using your marine radio remember to re-secure your microphone when not in use. An ‘open mic’ can block all other calls. It also allows others to hear conversations on your vessel, good or bad!

Ensure that everyone on board knows how to use the radio, where the life jackets are and how to put one on.

It is recommended that you have a VHF Radio installed on your vessel, as they have greater range and reliability. You are required to have a license to operate

rain and with a number of our Ladies having gone north to play in the Queensland Women’s Country Championship at Cairns and Half Moon Bay Golf Courses.

We wished all the travelling ladies ‘good golf’ and lots of fun times.

Our ladies returned on Thursday 12 May after attempting to play in extremely wet conditions. Cairns course was closed for the whole event and only 9 ‘dry holes’ were available for play at Half Moon Bay. The Foursomes were held on Monday 9 May, but only Div 1 & 2 were able to play. The two day stroke event was held on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11 of May. Div 1 & 2 played the 9 holes twice on Tuesday. Div 3 & 4 did the same on Wednesday which turned the competition into an 18 hole event. Our ladies played as well as they could under the extremely wet conditions, and enjoyed their free time exploring Cairns with some of them playing some indoor golf. The overall champion was Amber Barker from Atherton. Lesley Foran from Caboolture, who was travelling with the group, and was ‘adopted’ by BIGC, came third in her division. Congratulations Lesley.

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.
