Sensible Limitations I refer to the letter Sensible Limitations, published February 9.

Let me relate an incident which happened to us while we were crossing First Avenue, Woorim, near the playground, using the little path and the refuge island. It was a Sunday and we were accompanied by our two young granddaughters. We waited some time for a break in the traffic to cross towards the hotel. When there was a gap, we began to cross.

A 4WD came roaring around from the direction of the beach and waited impatiently as we tried to hurry the girls across. When we were clear, the

driver planted his foot, accelerating through the roundabout and into the rear of a small sedan, perhaps rendering it undriveable. Although we felt sorry for the owner of the sedan, we were extremely grateful that it hit a car, rather than a child. We are not anti 4WDs, but we do believe that the sheer number of them going through Woorim is endangering lives. Given that Nippers was happening on the beach at that time and that some of those children may also need to cross this busy road on Sundays, we feel the number of vehicles using that road should be carefully reviewed. Following this, I did contact both our local Councillor and our State Member and have been assured that the ‘results of the Sustainable Visitor Capacity and Management Study are due shortly and this will help shape the management of the beaches into the future’. Hopefully, as well as taking into account the coastal environment and the creatures which inhabit our shoreline, it also considers the impact of the number of vehicles along a local street.

Toxicity – A Matter of Opinion Your columnist Cranky Lizard states that “toxic masculinity has a purpose and a place”.

What he fails to realise is that toxic masculinity is bringing the world to edge of WW3 (and still may do so). It was the toxic male, Donald Trump, who cozied up to Vladimir Putin and enabled his warlike tendencies. Let’s not forget how Trump’s son boasted that their campaign got all the money it wanted from Russia.

It was toxic male, Vladimir Putin, who invaded a peaceful neighbour and is bombing hospitals and the civilian population. Toxic masculinity is the cause of the current situation.

On the home front, one woman a week is killed by her toxic masculine partner. So “Cranky Lizard” (who hides behind a nom de plume) is way out of line and needs to rethink his values.

Missing ‘Eric the Emu’ I am still hurting over the loss of ‘Eric the Emu’ on Woorim Beach.

Eric visited our Court in Banksia Beach for over 9 years. We would say hello to him. No-one molested or fed him - he was cherished by all!

I was saddened that some idiot would let his dog kill him at Woorim Beach.

I can only hope that the owner of the dog is found and fined for allowing his dog to kill such a wonderful animal.

Eric gave us such wonderful experiences and because he was never intimidated, came back day after day for years. Now we are only left with a memory.

Sadly, it seems like there is an element that have moved onto Bribie.

Let us see more Police and Ranger activity.

no longer drive at night so needed help from the ambulance. They were extremely busy and took 6 hours to get here. This is not acceptable, in this day and age!

I have no issues with the service itself.

They do their best with the resources they have. If Rod had a heart attack he would probably be dead and just another statistic. As we all know, Bribie has a very large elderly population, We need to rely on a better system especially at night and on weekends, when Doctors are not available.

It’s no fun watching someone in great pain, while waiting for the arrival of those flashing lights. Local Member please take note!

U3A BEACHMERE CONTINUES TO GROW - Contributed U3A Beachmere is a relatively new campus, conducting its inaugural General Meeting in 2019.

When Cranky Lizard began this adventure some years ago, it was clearly stated that public pomposity, public arrogance and incompetence would be in Cranky Lizard’s sights. That remains so today. However, nothing written here is intended to detract from the superb work of the SES volunteers in all states of Australia. They are a national asset, and if we cannot join them, we must surely be proud of them.

Since then, like everyone, we have faced many challenges, but with the support of members, tutors, volunteers, and local community groups, we have continued to grow.

The 10th May 2022 will see U3A Beachmere hold its Annual General Meeting. We urge all members to attend as there are two extremely important items on the agenda.

Recent changes to Queensland Incorporated Associations Act 1981 have created the need for changes and additions to our Constitution. These need to be ratified by the members to ensure our legal compliance. The other important business is the election of the Management Committee.

As several Management Committee members will step down this year, we are calling for nominations to ensure that we have a viable committee in the future.

We build on flood plains. We get flooded out, destroyed, washed away, ruined, catastrophised, portrayed on media as victims and blame the poor bastard who is the Prime Minister of the day for the whole stinking, sludge-covered mess.

We have Australian men and women, many of whom we have never seen before, appear on our tv screens wearing incredible uniforms, Field Marshall badges and batons, medals, shoulder boards carrying serious ranks befitting North Korean Generals and, accompanied by the inevitable signing pantomime, bray instructions at us about keeping calm, staying safe, “doing all we can”, “help is coming” And other banal nonsense.

Oh! Then there are the hats. Splendid affairs with silver and gold braid dripping off them, bespoke designs for women and men. Clippy little affairs, perched on weary crowns bearing the heavy responsibility of maybe 100 trucks and a squillion sandbags.

No politician makes it rain, makes it flood, creates bushfires. No politician has the power to do that, and to blame natural disasters like the recent flooding on the “climate change” phantom is lazy, irresponsible, deceitful posturing.

Rain cycles like the recent events have ever occurred in this country and will do again – regardless of the screeching, yelling, wild-eyed staring of the climate change catastrophists!

Cranky Lizard reckons the budget for creating the spectacularly uniformed shirts with shoulder boards, Gorget patches (known colloquially as red tabs), on the collar, rows of medals, and other weird-looking gongs would equal the purchase of a fully-equipped RIB rescue vessel.

Cranky Lizard suggests that broad national thinking can be applied to natural disaster scenarios. More people are living in the bush; therefore, more people are exposed to bushfires. Riverfront development continues, flood plains become housing estates, until they are flood plains again.

If it is so obvious, why do we do it?

Cranky Lizard does not intend to follow the wriggling worm of the media role in the recent disaster – except to say that it was unhelpful, wasteful, emotional and apportioning blame where no blame existed. Nothing new there – yawn!

I suppose the simple answer is to stop building on flood plains, but much of Australia’s East Coast, that land that is East of the Great Dividing Range, is almost always a flood plain of some kind.

It is on that land that most Australians want to live.

This economic and ergonomic pressure on Local and State Governments is almost unsustainable. So we carry on developing new estates with nonsense names, Podcast Downs, Trillopy Rise and so on.

Cranky Lizard suggests that it is as evident as a dunny in the desert that we are just building more problems. If building on flood plains must happen and is not avoidable, then surely some slightly more sophisticated planning system can be devised to deal with the apparent results from such decisions.

We know, because history spells it out for us, that our early towns were built on rivers, river mouths and large river deltas, because life was there, timber, fish, grain and wool were shipped from these places; there were no soft options in those years.

But now there are – at least Cranky Lizard thinks so!

So? Time for clear thinking on natural disasters.

Before land can be declared available for development, some clarity needs to be inserted. Local governments could/should form bodies that will involve the insurance companies, the bankers, the builders and the developers so that the forthcoming land release will be designated correctly – flood-prone, fire-threatened or safe – and the appropriate attached costs associated with the land be declared prior to public sale, enabling the prospective purchaser to make clear decisions about their own personal responsibility in these matters.

Insurers will be able to declare that the land and buildings will be uninsurable or will have loaded premiums. What’s wrong with that? Fire protection systems will be

mandatory in some forest dwellings, and the cost of these systems must be incorporated into the building costs.

Cranky Lizard is aware that these comments appear to be oversimplifying a complex problem – but is it so complicated?

You build on a river, or you don’t? You build in eucalyptus forests or you don’t?

How hard is that?

We turn our eyes to the problem of human resources to help assist with the damage control and the humanitarian cost of people who are materially and emotionally affected by the disaster.

There is a case for the establishment of a national task force of disaster relief teams, which occurs on an informal basis now.

Maybe that system needs to be hardened up – thus relieving the ADF from this work. Matters of this nature should not be beyond the intellectual capacity of Australia. We should easily be able to devise and implement a natural disaster relief system.

Well, at least Cranky Lizard thinks so.

A system of this nature would remove the poor whingeing bastards from the tv screens, blaming the Prime Minister for the fact that their house has been washed away – after having rebuilt it in the same place three times!

Has anyone else noticed that “climate change phantoms” appear on stage at bush fires, floods, and droughts? Phantoms that the media enthusiastically encourages?

Time passes, and the world changes, not really for the better in current times.

Cranky Lizard believes that self-responsibility, once a proud claim in Australia, has been diluted by mass media: something goes wrong, and people immediately think that the Government should do something.

Governments cannot do that – they just can not. Governments can provide resources and deploy assets, but, in the end, you are responsible for yourself!

If you are rebuilding your house on a river that has flooded three times before, maybe you should think about that!

Apart from all that – life is good, there is plenty of it about – enjoy your days!

U3A Beachmere looks forward to the year ahead, with plans already underway for the Term 3 program of courses. Remember, you too can be a tutor. All you need is an interest in a subject or some knowledge you can share. You need no qualifications.

The premise is to promote healthy ageing by sharing educational, creative, and leisure activities for those in the third age of life and to foster a friendly, stress-free environment to learn and socialize.

Beachmere Celebrates Community

Beachmere will recognize its community Resilience and celebrate some Recovery time after the February floods with a free R & R Party in Clayton Park, Beachmere.

Vixens of Fall, Plumb Dogs and The Zephyr Project are just some of the local bands donating their time, and their talent, to entertain during the afternoon.

Local community groups, led by U3A Beachmere, will organise the sausage sizzle and drinks stalls.

Market stalls have also been included with a large range of handmade craft and goods available.

BANG Committee member, Di Newell, said the event had been suggested by

the community on social media and had received great support from everyone with costs subsidised by donations from local businesses, community groups and elected representatives.

“After a tough time for residents and the community, a Recovery & Resilience Party was overwhelmingly supported by residents and community groups,” Di said.

“The event is still growing as more groups come on board and more people want to get involved.”

The Beachmere R & R Party will be held on Saturday, 7 May from noon to dusk at Clayton Park, Moreton Terrace, Beachmere with more info available from info@ bang.org.au.

Australia’s defence: Who is driving the bus? And where are they going?

For those of us who have had military experience (and plenty of Australians have), there is an increasing degree of uneasiness about our defence system.

I suspect that if we could actually see what was happening, we would see gazillions of meetings about having meetings, paperwork generated in mind-boggling amounts, posturing, lunches, petty jealousies and so on….

The defence of Australia is entirely in the hands of the Commonwealth Government; it is the responsibility of the Commonwealth Government to keep the Nation safe, and it has no greater responsibility.

I am quite convinced that in the Department of Defence there are many highly-skilled, dedicated professionals whose sole purpose is to provide Australia with a credible and sustainable defence system. But it is hard to find them.

If we are not safe, then all the rest of the noisy circus in Canberra is irrelevant. Social programs, infrastructure programs, health programs, education programs, our legal and justice systems, our Federal system of State Governments and such; all are reduced to the thump of the sideshow drum and the ineffectual spruiking of sideshow clowns!

That makes me wonder if a wholesale change of thinking about our defence is necessary – a massive shift in thinking.

Is it time to introduce National Service into Australia again?

So why the uneasiness?

Australia has not been under severe military threat since the 1940s; very few Australians now living were alive then.

As a nation, we are allied with powerful governments, the ANZUS Pact being the most significant of these agreements.

But, there are others: the Five Eyes Intelligence system is one of them. The recently created AUKUS, plus the Quad multilateral defence arrangements are both significant and timely; the latter two are the product of the Morrison Government with the bilateral support of the Australian Labor Party.

During the turbulent years of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Australian troops fought in combat against communist and autocratic expansion in South East Asia and Korea. Apart from Korea, the combat was the jungle; we were good at it, and in most cases we prevailed as a military force, except where we became the unwanted child of politics.

Korea was an open and brutal conflict; we were part of a United Nations Force, and this conflict was actually an extension of World War II for many Australian veterans. We had a Defence Force run by Generals who saw much active service in WWII as lower-ranking officers. They knew exactly what they were doing, and we had a civilian equivalent, the Department of Defence, run by hard-headed men who had taken Australia through perilous times.

Time rolls on, and fundamental changes occur; somewhere in the early 2000s, the Australian Defence Force began to experience significant change.

Political correctness, diversity, and some sexual scandals appeared to throw the Defence juggernaut in disarray. The Royal Australian Navy had a female

officer carrying the rank of Captain, a very senior Navy rank, to advise the Navy on matters relating to Islam!

Federal Governments and Prime Ministers changed as regularly as socks on Sundays. Internecine struggles over influence and policy direction consumed the energies of the bureaucrats and the Generals.

It seems, from what can be gleaned from the media and various Parliamentary Reports, those difficult deadline decisions were kicked down the road.

Regional politics intruded. In some cases, it appears as if competence was swapped for political expediency; hence we have battlefield helicopters that cannot fight, we have no submarines in the replacement pipeline, our new surface fighting ships appear to be suffering from a “Heath Robinson” mentality, in that defence bureaucrats want to turn a perfectly good Royal Navy frigate design into some odd version suitable for the Pacific.

For decades, it has been recognised that the fetch of the ocean in the North Sea and the Atlantic is quite different from the fetch of the ocean in the Pacific; a hull designed for Northern waters is not necessarily the best design for hulls to operate in the Pacific. I wonder why we order vessels like this?

Amongst all this bureaucratic nonsense is the continual beating of the Civilian versus Serving Personnel drum.

We now have more Generals than we had at the end of World War II. The General Officer nominated as Chief of the Defence Force has a take-home salary of over $1 million. This amount keeps him equal to his civilian counterpart in the

civil mob on defence.

What bloody nonsense!

In the blink of an eye, our strategic national environment has moved from benign to threatening and will probably continue to deteriorate for some years to come.

The current Government has recognised the problem and has taken some impressive moves – one of which is to appoint a Defence Minister who seems quite capable of taking on the Defence monolith and remind them that their task is to provide professional advice on the weapons systems, air, sea and land, which are needed to ensure Australia remains safe and able to defend itself.

Any observer of the murderous events conducted by the Russians in Ukraine will notice that much of the indirect fire destroying cities, towns and villages comes from missiles, ground-to-ground, ground-to-air and air-to-ground.

Australia has, and can develop and build missiles; we have done so before, and very effectively at that!

Are we doing that now? Are we developing those systems that we need to protect our land? I suspect that before we can make serious headway in solving this obvious dysfunction of advice, is to have a long hard, tough look at our Department of Defence.

It is easy to level emotional criticism at Government Departments – they are usually sitting ducks. But what has the Department of Defence achieved in the last ten years? What do they do – each day? Each week? Each month? How is progress measured?

There are some excellent examples – Singapore is one of them. Singaporeans are required to serve twelve years National Service – two years full time and ten years part time. Conscripts can serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, the First Responder Services and also in civilian construction projects.

Obviously, we cannot uplift a system such as Singapore has and superimpose it upon Australia.

But we can design our own, and quickly; it will give impetus to our Defence thinking, demonstrate to our Allies and neighbours that we are serious about our defence and willing to change our thinking.

Clearly, we have become a soft country through the abundance of good times and economic wealth.

Everyone who reads this should know that, within the lifetime of many Australians living today, the enemy at our door was deadly bloody serious about taking us and was foiled by the commitment of our Allies and hundreds of thousands of Australian men and women who gave their lives, well-being and skills to defeat them.

In the early days of World War II we did not have enough rifles and machine guns to give our men the means to fight.

The security of our sovereign Nation was paid for in blood and treasure – and that was in our lifetime!!

Do not kid yourself that it cannot happen again. It can.

So, we need to know who is driving the bus and where are they going. Ask your Federal Parliamentary representative about this.

A lesson in courage from Shane Warne

By Staff Writer Alistair Gray The nation and the world have been shocked by cricketing legend Shane Warne’s passing. A man who lived life to the full, loved to have fun, had a strong passion for his family, and gave back to the community tenfold.

The TV and papers have been full of “Warnie Stories”, and below is a small story I wrote about Shane Warne back on 10 March 2016, which shows what an extraordinary man he was. I have repurposed the article for relevance today. Enjoy!

March 2016 Love or hate reality TV, last night, those who watched Channel 10’s “I am a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” program, would have witnessed a powerful piece of TV. Here we saw the incredible power of personal character to dig deep, of mateship and the tremendous strength required to get something done, so as not to let your fellow teammates down. Set in the African jungle, a group of Australian celebrities, living in very basic camp conditions, had to perform personally challenging tasks to earn essential food for survival in the camp.

That night after a series of celebrity evictions, the camp was down to the final five, Anthony Callea, Brendan Fevola, Laurina Fleure, Paul Harragon and Shane Warne.

To earn an ice-cream spider dessert, each celebrities was asked to hold a venomous Baboon Tarantula spider in their hands for 30 seconds. The catch being, that each had to complete the task or forfeit the dessert. So naturally, after about five weeks of living on beans, rice and camp cooking, the players craved dessert.

Easy you may say! Each contestant confronted their fears and completed the task until it was Shane Warne’s turn, our world-famous cricketer. Shane had a real phobia of spiders. This phobia being worse than any other fear. His body convulsed and his hands shook at the thought. You watched his colour drain as adrenaline pumped through his body.

Shane was not in a good way! Sitting at home that night, I wondered whether this should be allowed to happen on TV especially considering the severity of his condition.

Then, with incredible personal strength and the love, support and encouragement of his teammates, Shane extended

his hand, successfully holding the Tarantula for 30 seconds. Shane Warne pushed through, despite being in enormous personal pain (something most of us will never understand) to achieve and overcome, so that his campmates and fellow competitors, could enjoy the coveted dessert. An experience so personally traumatising that it took a day for him to recover.

As I watched Shane’s incredibly courageous performance, I thought to myself, ‘there are some powerful lessons here’.

Not only from Shane’s performance, but, all the celebrities, who it appears had been on a enormous and challenging personal development program. They had each been tested and endured through, to achieve things previously thought impossible, due mainly to their mindset and personal values. After all, it is not customary in our protected lives, to throw oneself off a 200-meter dam wall in a safety harness, to eat rats and maggots, or to put oneself in a water tank with snakes and crocodiles.

Yet, at the same time, most completed their assigned tasks for the benefit and survival of their fellow teammates.

I’m sure some of you will remember this show when it aired here on Bribie. It warranted a huge impact at the time.

The question I ask is, how can you tap into this enormous powerful inner strength in your personal life or in your business? The power to break through your own limiting beliefs, paradigms, and constraints, to excel. To achieve outcomes previously thought impossible. Nothing is stopping you except yourself. So instead, forget about what others think and focus on being the best you can be.

You are unlikely to see a Tarantula spider here on beautiful Bribie Island, as they are more common around North Western Queensland, however are found in most States. Different to the African variety, the Whistling, Barking, or Bird-Eating Spiders are the Australian equivalent Tarantula spider.

According to the Australian Museum, they are known for their sound and have a leg span up to 16cm. The Tarantula’s bite is venomous and painful but not life-threatening.

Loans can sometimes be confusing when refinancing or consolidating.

Keeping track of deductable interest and non-deductable interest be difficult.

One of the first items to realise is that a property mortgaged to pay for itself has a loan against itself. If this property is income producing, then the interest can be claimed against the rent.

If a property is used as a mortgage to support a loan for another property, then the loan is against the second property and not property 1. Hence, if property one is income producing, unless it has its’ own loan there is no interest claimable. Property 2 has the loan and claiming the interest is dependent on property 2 and whether it is income producing. Property 1 is only collateral for property 2.

Redrawing further funds from a loan already in existence can be another problem. If the initial funds are used for the property with the loan, then the additional interest is deductable.

If the funds are used for private, then the interest must be broken up based on % of each component against the total loan on the day the redraw took place.

Many clients are advised to put all their wages or income into an investment loan to help reduce the

interest charged. Unfortunately, when you draw funds for living, that portion becomes private and the interest non-deductible. Over time, the original investment loan can become purely private, and all interest deemed private. Creating an offset account is a much better way to utilise your funds and keep the loan intact.

They Shall Not Grow Old…

By Amelia Strazdins The month of April brings with it a time of reflection.

ANZAC Day, commemorated on the 25th is a time for us, as Australians and New Zealanders, to give our respects to those who have fought and given their lives for our country and our freedoms.

It is easy to become caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, so busy with work and school.

Many of us do not take the time to consider those who gave their lives for the liberties and freedoms that we experience today, and possibly take for granted. The 25th ensures that we, as a Nation, take time to pay our respects to all those in service, both past and present.

ANZAC day is not only a day to pay our respects but also allows us the opportunity to learn more about our history. Bribie specifically has played a role in previous conflict.

Learning about our country’s, and our Islands history, ensures that we fully understand the seriousness of these sacrifices. With the emergence of more modern, and current, conflicts ANZAC day serves as a reminder of the loss of life and liberties of not only Australians, but also all the brave, courageous individuals who have fought for freedom. In taking this time to recognise these brave efforts we should think not only of our soldiers, but also our nurses and medics who dedicated their lives to protecting and caring for both

soldiers and civilians. We must also consider the families, those who have lost mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons to various conflicts around the globe or who are currently under active duty. In recognising these brave acts, we keep their bravery and spirits alive, helping to preserve their valiant actions forever in history.

Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of ANZAC day are the marches, dawn services and reconnection of veterans, soldiers, and families all in commemoration. The past years have posed issues, for obvious reasons, with limits on crowds and gathering numbers. However, with the lifting of restrictions, many of those who may not have been able to attend in person services for the past couple of years

will have the opportunity to give their respects at local parks and RSL’s.

Bribie offers a number of services, including a dawn service, services at the RSL and the March which leaves from Apex Park. Taking the time to attend one of these services is the least we can do to show our respect and thanks to those who have given and dedicated their lives to our country.

Consider where we may be, where our country may be without the bravery, mateship and courage displayed by all the men and women who have previously and continue to dedicate their lives to ensuring our protection and freedom.

Les Barnett - the story

Station and through this experience overcame his shyness. “At 5 o’clock, huge crowds of people descended on me for their daily paper. I soon learned to overcome my social interaction fear”, he remembers.

Les Barnett ‘Marshall’s Music Machine’.

Author of three religious novels, Bribie resident Les Barnett notes that “none of them have been best sellers.” We were chatting about the vagaries of life and subsequent tricks it sometimes plays on us.

“I am an Asperger’s Syndrome sufferer and have had difficulty in the past with spelling and social interaction. So, for me to write a book, let alone three, was way beyond any of my school teacher's expectations of me” he says, smiling, having conquered his spelling issues with computer spell check.

Overcoming his social skills however was something else! After an indifferent academic start, at the age of thirteen he sold newspapers near Melbourne’s Flinders Street

Music played an important role in his life, learning how to play a variety of instruments including the guitar, mouth-organ and xylophone, igniting a desire to become a ‘one man band’.

Eventually he designed and built his first multi-instrument music machine.

Along his journey in life, he met Brian Cadd, who together with Don Mudie, composed the 1971 hit song ‘Marshall’s Portable Music Machine’, which singer Robin Jolley, successfully recorded and released on the Fable label. Whilst modestly not claiming the originality for the Cadd/Mudie composition, Les and his multi-instrument machine were thereafter known as ‘Marshall’s Music Machine’.

As his fame spread, he appeared on popular TV shows such as ‘The Mike Walsh Show’ and Graham Kennedy’s ‘In Melbourne Tonight’. He rubbed shoulders with many Australian entertainment icons and performed with stars of the 70’s such as John Farnham, Ross D Wylie, Smokie Dawson, Colleen Hewitt, Daryl Summers and Ossie Ostrich.

Working the Sydney and Melbourne

Robin Jolley club circuits and an Opera House performance with Eartha Kitt further enhanced his profile. When the circuits ended, he dismantled his music machine creating a musical robot. He then commenced providing hours of entertainment at schools where he gained another legion of fans.

Now, in his early seventies, Les Barnett as `The Marshall’ is modestly content to entertain with his guitar at retirement villages and nursing homes. “I have a big one coming up. By Staff Writer Alistair Gray Did you know that as of Sept 2019, there were 22 registered Defibrillators on Bribie Island? Today there is probably more. Sadly, almost all are locked away in cupboards, and many are only accessible between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Some inside Clubs, Schools, Community Centres, Retirement Villages, and retailers.

Now, I don’t say you need to know exactly where they are, but have you seen any signage in your travels around the Island, notifying you of ones’ existence? This vital signage would be invaluable in an emergency.

Time is of the essence in the event of a cardiac incident. According to the Queensland Ambulance Service website, if you don’t receive CPR or defibrillation, your chance of survival decreases by 10 per cent each minute.

In other words, you have about 8 minutes for someone to get help, after which time your chance of survival declines rapidly. So, accessing an AED or performing CPR, while waiting for an ambulance to arrive, significantly increases the chances of survival.

AED shocks the heart and returns it to its normal rhythm. Unlike a heart attack, which is a blockage of the artery, a cardiac arrest is an electrical fault. As a result, this electrical fault means the abnormal heart rhythms cannot pump enough blood to your heart.

The lesson for us here, as a community, is we should improve our access to AEDs and learn how to perform CPR. With 50% of the Bribie population over the age of sixty, the likelihood of someone on the Island having a cardiac incident on most days is high. Coronary heart disease is the second leading cause of death for Queenslanders aged 35-64 years, with 8% of all Queenslanders die from coronary heart disease each year, accord-

ing to the Health of Queenslanders 2020 report. I don’t know about you, but every time I leave the Island, I pass one or two ambulances with lights flashing, indicating a lot of medical emergency response activity on the Island.

When I contacted Queensland Ambulance, they confirmed they have been building a register of AEDs. The register is accessed when a triple zero caller rings with a suspected cardiac emergency. They advise the caller if an AED is on the business premises, however, not when located on nearby premises. There appears to be no plan to do anything else with this information, such as developing an AED locations website or building an APP. In some other States, websites show the location of AEDs, and in Tasmania, they have been trialling an APP. In Queensland, public access AEDs seem to be limited to transport hubs, shopping centres and Clubs. While in the UK, Europe and New Zealand, you can find public access AEDs available 24/7, conveniently are attached to walls or in special-purpose boxes on a stand-alone pole. To access the AED, the user dials the emergency response number; here, it is 000, and the emergency operator gives the access code to the defibrillator, despatching an ambulance at the same time. A very efficient arrangement. With our age dynamics and high tourist numbers, such a system would be ideal for Bribie Island.

Finally, for those organisations with AEDs on their premises, I would encourage you to display suitable signage to show the public you have the lifesaving AED available. For those who want to learn CPR or upgrade their skills, regular training is available in Caboolture at around $50. Just Google CPR Training Caboolture to find your preferred trainer.

NBN Network funding boost Due to a $480 million government investment, locals could soon have access to a significantly more capable NBN network. The investment in NBN Co’s non commercial fixed wireless network will significantly improve the quality of services being provided over the NBN fixed wireless and satellite networks.

By using the latest 4G and 5G wireless technology, this upgrade will extend the coverage range from a tower and allow higher speed services to everyone served by the tower.

This upgrade will see NBN offer new higher speed services to the fixed wireless network: 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) to all 750,000 premises able to access the new, expanded coverage footprint and a 250 Mbps service will be available to 85% of premises.

The network design metric for the busy hour today is 6 Mbps; this will rise sharply following the upgrade, to 50 Mbps. The inaugural Moreton Youth Week Fishing Comp is coming!

The competition is FREE to enter and is for youth 12-25yrs.

2nd – 11th April 2022 They will be fishing land-based for any saltwater, freshwater or pest species.

The competition will run for 10 days and will cover any land-based fishing spot in the whole of the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. It is an online photo comp run through the 2 Bent Rods app.

“The idea came from a group of young trainees from a program on Bribie. We were talking about opportunities and events that might appeal and they all said that they'd love a fishing competition.” Lucas – Youth Development Officer, Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Samantha Beckmann from 2 Bent Rods said, “These competitions are all about getting our youth outside and enjoying our great outdoors. For some, they will be joining because they want to make a difference to the environment and will target pest species.

Others will be more competitive and

will be competing to win prizes.

Other will join in for the fun.”

It will also be a great chance to educate everyone on invasive pest species and the harm they do to our waterways. There will be social media posts on the Moreton Youth Week Fishing Comp Facebook page on rules, regulations. Entrants can also share some of their catches and glory photos.

Unitywater locks in commitment to prevention of domestic violence Unitywater has been re-accredited as a White Ribbon Workplace for the next three years. They first received White Ribbon Australia Workplace Accreditation in 2017 and the latest re-accreditation furthers Unitywater’s commitment to the prevention of domestic and family violence (DFV).

Their Healthy Relationships program ensures team members understand how to recognise, refer, and respond to DFV through awareness training, contact Officers, a strong policy position and a supportive culture. They also support front-line community organisations in the region that help women and children impacted by DFV. The water and sewerage service provider has furthered its commitment through its partnership with charity, Challenge DV (formerly Australia’s CEO Challenge). They are again taking part in their Darkness to Daylight event this May, with a Unitywater team running or walking 110km to help raise funds and awareness of DFV. The White Ribbon Australia Workplace Accreditation Program required Unitywater to meet 15 criteria under three standards and is internationally recognised for three years.

Highway to undergo flood improvement works

Work is underway to significantly improve flood resilience, safety and capacity of the road network through the $13 billion Bruce Highway Upgrade Program. Ten three-lane bridges are being built at five creek crossings between Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Steve Irwin Way to withstand a one-in-100-year flood event.

This includes the area where significant flooding led to the Bruce Highway being cut in late February.

The Bruce Highway Upgrade Program is the largest road infrastructure plan for Queensland. The new southbound bridges and approaches currently under construction at King John and Lagoon creeks will be at least 2.4m higher than

Families with multiple kids in childcare are set to benefit from a significant increase in the rate of Child Care Subsidy (CCS). The increased rate applies to families with multiple children aged five and under in childcare.

The rate of CCS will be lifted by 30% for the second child and any other younger children in care, up to a maximum rate of 95%. The higher subsidy will boost support for working families and follows the removal of the annual CCS cap of $10,655 for families earning over $190,015 (in 2021-22 terms) from 10 December 2021 – and beyond.

The increased subsidy has been fasttracked and brought forward from its initial release date of July 1, 2022. Families do not need to do anything to receive the increased subsidy.

the current low-lying ones. The existing northbound bridges over King John and Lagoon creeks, already higher than the southbound bridges, will be replaced with new bridges sitting 1.3m higher.

These are being built as part of the $662.5 million Bruce Highway Caboolture – Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way upgrade and is expected to be completed by late 2023. Bribie Island Orchestra brings much joy to residents

Social Café crew shine with award win Their big win came from the largest category on the night with 27 other entrants. Winning this award is an amazing achievement for their entire team and they are thrilled to have brought this title home.

Picture and story by Alistair Gray Recently, local lovers of classical music, were treated to an evening of good old-fashioned entertainment

by The Bribie Island Orchestra. Held in the local Little Flower Catholic Church, it was a great evening and something that makes living on Bribie so exceptional.

This autumn Concert was the second time the orchestra has performed in two years, thanks to the challenges of Covid. Conducted by long time Bribie resident, Martin White OAM, who gave great insights into each piece of music played. Music played included pieces from Handel, Mozart, Bach,

Gounod, Boccherini, Strauss, O’Carolan, Trad and Larry Clark, providing a broad and diverse program. A highlight was when Brynley White, Brisbane Symphony Violinist, gave a solo performance, delighting the audience of about one hundred and eighty.

Martin White OAM paid a special tribute to his wife, Heather, and the team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the event happen and provide the fabulous supper at the end of the evening. The big news is another concert is to be held at the end of June. So, watch out for when tickets become available.

In a nod to their hard-working effort, the team at Social Café from Bribie Island RSL, have received the top recognition they deserve. At the 2022 Keno & Club Queensland Awards for Excellence, held on March 22, the Social Café was honoured to take the win with Best Dining, 100-200 capacity in Queensland.

These awards are an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the hospitality industry and to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and achievements of Clubs throughout Queensland.

The Bribie contingent (RSL Management Team and Board of Directors representatives) were joined by 70 other Clubs from around the State in a spirit of celebration, friendship, and shared commentary of what local Clubs do everyday to benefit local communities and staff.

“Our fabulous members and local community already know just how wonderful Social Café is,” a team member said. “But now everyone will know! The beautiful trophy has taken top spot on the cake cabinet. So pop down, take a look and share in our win!”

Social Café first opened its doors in December 2018 and the team have always felt that creating a point of difference, Club members would fall in love with, is a top priority. The ambiance, atmosphere, amazing food, and welcoming vibe that Social Café offers, has truly been amazing to watch develop over the last few years.

Coming back to nature

There’s no denying that Bribie Island is a wonder of nature. But how much is being done to make the most of that, whilst boosting the tourism potential of the Island in the process? That could be about to change. In recent months, a team of Bribie locals have been busy developing the groundwork to reimagine the tourism narrative for Bribie Island.

“The forum is going to be talking about nature-based tourism and the fact it’s a large growth area of tourism. It’s approaching 30% of the market,” Angela says. “Tourism Australia and Tourism & Events Queensland through its na-

packages based on the Island’s natural assets (guided tours/walks), the accessible tourism boom, a Bribie Discovery Centre to welcome and inform visitors and recognition of Bribie's (Yarun's) ancient cultural heritage.

Angela Armitage, Richard Ogden, and Geoff Ginn (all with a background in small business) have organised the Bribie Island Nature-Based Tourism Vision Forum to explore the outcomes and provide the opportunity for others within the local community to contribute to what comes next.

“We are all members of Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA), and we are also part of the tourism sub-committee,” Angela said.

“We have also all been involved in small business, ranging from Richard who chaired the Sandgate Small Business Association. Geoff who as an artist has run a gallery and been a captain in the Army. I’ve owned and operated retail and tourism businesses. The three of us have all had small business experience, so we understand the demands and understand what it’s like to be at the coalface.”

With nature-based tourism highlighted as being among the fastest growing and highest yielding sectors of the tourism industry, Bribie Island provides a wealth of opportunities.

“There is a lot more to Bribie than meets the eye – lots of stories to uncover,” Angela said. “There are so many opportunities here. We’re not talking about having Bribie overrun, we’re talking about monetising and making the most from the significant numbers of people who already come here and high-yielding tourists. We’d like to see Bribie businesses thrive and just change the conversation a bit. In the end if Bribie business does well, it’ll be great for jobs and boost Bribie overall.”

From the extensive marine life to the natural flora and fauna habitat encompassing the island, capitalising on the significance of Bribie being an Island is what Angela feels is one of its biggest drawcards. But there is so much more that can be done to make Bribie even better.

“For a start, Islands are a bit exotic to people, most people do not live on an Island, so we need to make a lot more of the fact that Bribie is an Island and how special that is,” Angela said. “The general idea is we want to talk about whether Bribie is selling itself short. We can’t compete with the Gold Coast and Noosa for bright lights and restaurants, nor do we want to. But we need to consider what our competitive advantage is and what will bring people here and that is Bribie’s nature, which just happens to be identified by the tourism bodies as a hot growth area. We want to build on that. We want to maximise and monetise what we have. Look at places like Tasmania and New Zealand and what they have done to maximise their tourism potential. When you think about it, the places people are going and what they are going there for - you can see how important nature-based tourism actually is but we’re not telling that story on Bribie as well as what we could.”

Good start but still not enough for Queensland housing market, says REIQ

The 2022 Federal Budget delivered some good news for the Queensland real estate market, with the main initiative to tackle housing affordability being the continuation of the Home Guarantee Scheme and the doubling of the places offered.

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella welcomed the expansion of the Home Guarantee Scheme from 20,000 to 50,000 places a year – but expressed concerns over whether the measures went far enough to have a meaningful impact.

“This Federal Budget gets a tick of approval from us for its support for single parent families and first home buyers and its objective to encourage people to move the regions,” Ms Mercorella said.

“However, while expanding the Home Guarantee Scheme is a good start and definitely a step in the right direction, it must be acknowledged that 50,000 places is not nearly enough to meet national demand.”

FIRST HOME GUARANTEE “The REIQ welcomes support for first home buyers with 35,000 places announced as part of the extended First Home Guarantee allowing them to purchase a home with a 5% deposit without having to pay mortgage insurance because the government guarantees the loan,” Ms Mercorella said.

“Any budgetary measures that support first home buyers to manage the challenge of saving a significant deposit and realising their dream of home ownership sooner is to be applauded.

“However, considering there were nearly 17,000 first home buyer loans in Queensland alone in the year to January 2022 (ABS), and 36,000 first home buyer loans in Queensland alone last financial year (boosted by the HomeBuilder Grant), you can see how 35,000 places nationally is not going to make much of a dent on demand.”

FAMILY HOME GUARANTEE “The REIQ is pleased to see there are another 5,000 places for single parents who earn up to $125,000 a year to have assisted access to established housing under the Family Home Guarantee - allowing them to purchase their first properties or re-enter the housing market with just a 2% deposit,” Ms Mercorella said.

“Extending the support to assist single parent families is commendable.

REGIONAL HOME GUARANTEE “While the REIQ welcomes the new Regional Home Guarantee, with 10,000 places per year for migrants and anyone who has not owned a property for five years – it’s disappointing to see that this initiative is restricted to either building or buying a newly built home,” Ms Mercorella said.

“By doing so, it fails to recognise the entry barriers for many first home buyers, particularly for young families for whom new construction isn’t an affordable or practical option over established housing options.

“To have the desired impact, this initiative needs to be extended to established housing.

“Further, when it comes accessing the Regional Home Guarantee, Queensland is at a disadvantage due to our larger decentralised population.

“With a significant portion of our population living outside of our capital

Hi to all the gardeners,

Do not let ferns dry out between waterings. It is a good idea to keep the soil surface damp at all times, which will involve watering daily, but avoid over-soggy soil.

A lot of people are doing it tough at the moment. For those who are worried about their gardens here are a few things to help it recover. First, with all this rain the soil will become more acidic. With the already acidic sandy soil here on Bribie Island, now is the time to add some Dolomite to your soil and lawns, which will raise the pH. Also, where possible add some nourishing compost to the garden. Ten days (10) after adding the Dolomite, I would look at using a slow-release fertilizer on the garden.

As most of the topsoil and fertilizer (used recently in the gardens) will now be at Luggage Point!

Ferns prefer a moderately humid position, not over-moist. Low humidity results in brownish edges to the foliage and a dry lustreless appearance.

The best way to create and retain humidity is to place pots on trays with water in the base with a good thickness of stones to keep the pots just above the water. On hot days you can mist your plant with water.

Draughts will carry off the moisture you have formed around your plants.

Like with humans, draughts can also have a drying effect and chill the plants or roots in wet soil.

When we have rain, like we have had recently, I like to spray all the plants in the nursery with a mix of Mancozeb and a little liquid fertilizer, e.g., Charlie Carp or Triple Boost, which helps protect the plants against fungal diseases.

If ferns need dividing, this is best done in late Winter or early Spring.

First cut the fronds to soil level, then divide into segments, getting rid of any dead material. Note: new shoots come from the outside of the clump.

HIPPEASTRUMS As I spoke recently about bulbs coming into stores, I thought I would give a few tips on these lovely Spring flowering bulbs. The stems are hollow, with usually four large beautifully shaped flowers like a trumpet. Hippeastrums are easily grown in full sun or part shade, planted in the garden or in pots and are available in all the colours of the rainbow. As this plant is dormant in Winter, there is no need to fertilise. Remember that they hate wet feet which causes the Bulbs to rot.

JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH & APRIL You should separate your clumps every 3 to 4 years. In the months mentioned you should lift and divide, removing damaged foliage.

FERNS – SHADE AND INDOORS Who would like some ferns in a natural bushland setting? How about adding a bit of colour like Impatiens?

MAY, JUNE JULY

Some may keep their leaves; however, most will become dormant, going into a slow grow period at this time of the year. As we don’t want to stimulate growth, we don’t need to fertilise.

Outdoors, ferns need protection from strong wind. Indoors, they need to be protected from draughts. Indoor ferns grow best in bright, indirect light, defined as a position, where a hand with fingers spread, held about 25cm above a coloured card, will throw a distinct shadow. A few, like Holly, Boston or the Nephrolepis fern will grow in moderate to poor light, but the fronds will become much longer, more pendulous, and weaker – though still quite attractive.

Time to use a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote Total, which can be used for both gardens and pots.

Maybe add some Sulphate of Potash and start watering once a week.

SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER As the Bulbs will start to flower, best to apply Snail Bait as these little pests love the new flower buds. Re-apply the Sulphate of Potash and water twice a week.

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER You should have lovely green foliage.

Ensure you are watering, either once or twice a week. Re-apply the slow-release fertilizer - Osmocote Total.

Most ferns, apart from the more delicate Maidenhairs, will grow happily in a shade-house. These ferns should be re-potted each year until they are in the largest size container they can handle. Hen and Chicken ferns, Nephrolepis and Pteris are all good in this situation. Stag and Elkhorn ferns can be grown in a shade-house or where they will get protection from the hot midday sun. They can also be attached to the bark of a tree or any piece of brickwork or timber.

A greenhouse full of fern varieties Ferns in hanging baskets can dry out, as they are exposed to more air movement than a container on the ground.

Buying a good potting mix with peat moss, like the Searles Platinum, will be helpful.

Tree ferns combine bold and beautiful form with lacy green softness and compliment any type of landscape.

They form a canopy to protect softer, smaller species and can also be grown in containers. Like most ferns, do not let them dry out and when grown in pots they will require more water.

Do not plant ferns in soil that has recently been treated with Lime.

Hi readers of ‘The Local’ Newspaper Finally, we are experiencing some good weather and even though the passage and bay are still fairly dirty from the run-off, quite a few keen anglers have ventured out and successfully caught fish.

The Ripples at Banksia Beach have seen a few Snapper and Grassy Sweat Lip, with the last hour of the run-out tide and first hour of the run-in tide being the best time to target these fish. Anglers have been using a mixture of Mullet Fillets, Herring and Garfish, lightly weighted on either a single hook or on gang hooks.

Mackerel-Tuna have turned up in large numbers

CLEAN FUEL IS A MUST

by Roger Brown Brisbane Boat Buyers Looking after your boats fuel tank, fuel lines and fuel filters will keep your motor running well, and your boat safe.

Many motor breakdowns can be a direct result of contaminated fuel, either through water or foreign matter in the fuel system, whether your motor is Inboard, Outboard, Petrol or Diesel. Clean fuel is a must!

Fuel filters come in a variety of styles.

I recommend a combination fuel filter/water trap with a clear base and drain plug. You can check to see if there is any water contamination, by using the drain plug to put a small amount of fuel into a container.

Replace the filter element approximately every six months.

The perfect time for a thorough check of all fuel lines, connections, and hose fittings, is when fitting or replacing the fuel filter. Remembering to never use zip ties on fuel lines. Always use good quality stainless steel hose clamps to ensure a good tight leak free joint. Fuel is highly volatile.

Even the slightest fuel leak can spell disaster.

Remember to check all Safety Gear, Jackets, Flares, Fire Extinguishers, Torches, Mirrors, Anchors and Paddles, etc.

A very large Bream caught by Connor Prawn using a light 4lb line and 1-3 kg Spin Rod. A great place to try if the weather turns bad is the Pacific Harbour Canals. We have had some great reports of Mangrove Jack and large Estuary Cod. Night-time is the best time to pursue these, when the surrounds are quiet and there is minimal to no traffic on the water. Again, the last of the run-out tide is proving the best time using live bait such as Mullet or Yellow Tale Pike.

The mouth of Ningi Creek has had a lot of Grunter and Tarwhine, live Yabbies and Bloodworms are the best bait to catch these. Nigel caught a 35cm Tarwhine on a live Yabby through the week. You can pump for live Yabbies around the Sandstone Point Flats and White Patch.

There have also been a few reports of Whiting around Turners Camp Rd on an incoming tide with live Bloodworms being the choice bait.

Enjoy fishing in April and remember to catch only what you need!

A great way to catch these is throwing metal lures into the schools, example Flanker 7 Stickbait 115mm, available at Island Fishing Supplies and winding back as fast as you can. Even though they are not great fish they eat, they are excellent sport on light gear.

Bribie Island Golf Club Women’s Golf results

To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.

Sunday 27 February, the event to be held at Murgon, the District Committee’s Day, was also called off. However, it has been rescheduled for Sunday 21 March.

Hopefully by then all our District Golf Courses should be up and running again.

Rain stopped play on 10th March, which was our Open Day. So not to waste an opportunity, our Captain, Ailsa Lauchlan, invited all players to lunch and a spot of socializing, at the Golf Club and to observe for ourselves how the course was recovering. A great time was had by all, with around 60 women golfers attending.

Following is a group photo with our Chef, Brian, front and centre. Open Day is now rescheduled for Thursday 24 March.

It’s becoming more evident that the community does want to see a new bridge built. We are growing as a community, with an increase of population in this region and now as an increasingly popular destination for tourists.
