Welcome to issue 73!

Plenty of good local news to read this month, starting on page 4 with our Valentine’s Day couple John and Marj Horchner of Beachmere sharing their secret for 60 years of happy marriage.

And yes, Cranky Lizard has returned from holidays to talk about what can we expect in the next 12 months, while for the women who love their fishing, on page 13 there’s an interesting piece on a Women’s Fishing Classic which you all can participate in. Next issue we’ll be increasing our fishing reports to cover both offshore and onshore fishing, with Danny at Island Fishing Supplies coming aboard with his onshore tips.

Have you heard all the helicopters hovering over Bribie Island and our region lately? Council has given approval to a heliport at Sandstone Point Hotel, and many locals are not happy! Sheree Hoddinett has looked into this and you can read her report on page 14.

Looks like “that virus” isn’t going away any time soon, so on page 16 Matt Owen has done a great article about the hidden costs of Covid.

The LOCAL gives a big shout out to our local Australia Day Award recipients - Graham Gibb, Citizen of the Year, and Ann Brooks and Malcolm “Mick” Klein who are the first Community Spirit awardees.

Sensible Limitations

I am writing to you to highlight a current and developing problem on Bribie Island’s front beach. I have lived on the Island for over 19 years and was a regular visitor to our front beach to picnic, walk and fish. It was a beautiful location with little beach vehicular traffic, and what there was, kept to the hard sand and clear of the dunes.

Over the last few years, the amount of vehicle traffic on the beach has increased dramatically consequently the damage caused by 4WDs to the dunes and turtle nesting sites.

Recently, the front beach has become a popular topic for videos, aired on YouTube, subsequently reaching a far

wider audience of potential 4WD visitors. The numbers of vehicles driving on the beach is now in the 100s and continue to grow because of Bribie’s easy access from Brisbane and the growing population within the Moreton Bay region.

If we wish to retain the beach in a pristine condition fitting of a National Park, some limitations must be placed on vehicular access. The beach is NOT a racetrack, and the dunes are NOT places for vehicles. Surely some sensible limitations can be introduced which still allow people to enjoy the beach without damaging the environment. The Island is in danger of being “loved to death”.

Bob , Banksia Beach A pleasant surprise Congratulations to Alistair Gray for his article on changing the date of Australia Day. I wholeheartedly agree with the idea. It was a pleasant surprise to see such sentiments in this paper.

Diana Grey, Bribie Island Why change Australia Day? Your staff writer Alistair Gray (Issue 72) certainly poses a curly question “Should we change the date of Australia Day?” I think not! While I acknowledge that the atrocities perpetrated against our First Nations people were wrong, and children being removed from parents and all they’ve ever known is questionable. But there is a flip side to this issue.

How many of the “stolen generation” received a good education as a result of their removal, and went on to achieve things they would never otherwise have done? How would First Nations people see themselves living today had Australia not been “invaded” by any other foreign nation? And if it hadn’t been Cook, or previous Dutch explorers, who? What would Australia look like today?

Would we have any of our great Indigenous sporting heroes, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, Cathy Freeman, Ash Barty, Scott Boland, to name just a few? What percentage of full-blooded aboriginals exist today? Who is responsible for building Australia into the great country it is today? The early convicts, pioneers, engineers, planners, educators, scientists and so on. Or our First Nations people?

There are only three certainties in life: taxes, death and change. So, isn’t it time to accept the fact that our country was discovered or conquered, as many countries throughout history have been - and just get on with it?

Margaret Guthrie-White, Bongaree Degrees of concern A couple of months ago I wrote in support of Harvey Fewings’ article

(Issue 69 October 2021) about the education system being “knackered”.

In an article in The Australian, 27 January, Education Editor Natasha Bita writes: “Cash-strapped universities have offered teaching degrees to school leavers with below-average tertiary entrance results, stoking concerns over teacher quality. The University Admissions Centre (UAC) in NSW has revealed students with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank as low as 60 -placing them below the top 40 per cent of academic achievement- gained admission to education degrees. Several universities have placed students in an education degree despite ATAR results below the median of 78.5 in Victoria, 78 in Queensland and the median of 71.8 for girls and 68.7 for boys in NSW this year.”

In her article she quotes the figures for the University of Canberra, the Australian Catholic University, Charles Sturt University and the Charles Darwin University.

Queensland universities were not mentioned, but I expect that they would be similar. Ms Bita goes on to say, “Teaching degrees are popular with universities as they are relatively cheap to deliver, and attract generous taxpayer subsidies, but the federal government has been so concerned about the poor academic ability of some new teachers that it now forces them to pass a basic literacy and numeracy test before they graduate. Alarmingly, 1350 would-be teachers – more than 8 per cent of graduates- flunked both tests in 2020 despite 13 years of schooling and four years at university.”

I rest my case. I worry for the futures of my grandchildren.

by Kathy Vincent Not often do we have the honour of an ex-London Metropolitan Police Officer living on Bribie. Though I do know of one other!

Michael Claxton, once Police Officer, now Author, recently attended our Club to share some of his experiences and adventures with us.

He kept us all enthralled with the origins of the Scotland Yard and his contributions there.

As a member of the ‘London Pick Pocket Team’, he patrolled the busy streets identifying and apprehending pick

pockets in action.

Time within the ‘murder squad’ afforded him the opportunity to work a few ‘gruesome’ cases.

All these past experiences and events have attributed to his ideas and influenced his writing. Being able to separate fact from fiction makes for captivating detective novels!

Of particular interest was his inside knowledge of how TV Detective programmes equate to the ‘real thing’, confirming that they are nothing alike.

TV series ‘Vera’ is probably the closest!

Beachmere Valentines celebrate 60 loving years

What will it take to get another Bridge?

Their secret? “Discuss everything.”

Story and picture: Alistair Gray Jannes (John) and Marjorie Horchner sat holding hands, and immediately you felt a strong love and the bonds between the two of them. After sixty years of marriage, there is something extraordinary here. They were married on 13 January 1962.

“We are very humble people”, John said, as we arranged to meet and to discuss their life together. John and Marj, as they prefer to be known, are long-time residents of Beachmere who purchased their block back in the seventies. They camped on the block until being told by the council they weren’t allowed to camp on their land. So, John and Marj went further down the road where they found a builder who said he would build them a three-bedroom home in three weeks from when they paid their deposit.

And, sure enough, true to his word, they had their newly built home in three weeks.

Lessons here for today, I think! Since then they have expanded the family home with a large patio area, where we sat looking straight out to Moreton Island.

John, born in Holland, migrated to Australia post-war as a young boy with his family. “It was a very frightening experience coming to the other side of the world with many unknowns,” John said, with the family split and some travelling to Melbourne, and he to Sydney, where they all finally reconnected.

John recalls a very emotional time. After the war, Holland wanted to reduce the number of people living there, and Australia was looking for new migrants.

John, who has practical skills, was employed by the Postmaster General’s Office (Telecom) as an Engineer until he retired at fifty-five.

Marj initially worked in a clothing factory until she discovered Tupperware and worked for years in product distribution.

During this time, they raised a family and

were blessed with two sons and two daughters and now have nine grandkids and four great-grandkids. They rightly are very proud of their family and achievements.

They love to travel, have taken many cruises, and travelled all over Australia in a caravan, with many lovely memories. They are also members of the local Probus Club.

What was their secret to a long marriage?

John immediately replied, “Yes Dear”!

It’s all about compromise. They discuss everything. A kitchen table is an important place where many things are discussed and debated. They would never make a large purchase without a joint agreement; money was always 50-50, with joint bank accounts.

The relationship is all built on trust. And care for each other. It is about being soul mates together. Both have solid Christian values and are active members of the local Uniting Church community.

When asked how they celebrate Valentine’s Day, John said, “We may be persuaded to give each other a kiss, or perhaps a card, but after sixty years of marriage, we don’t need the trimmings to show our love for each other”.

Before I left, John showed me around his garden, referring to it as his “jungle”. As a botanist, John has a strong interest in plants and gives lectures. Told once that palm trees wouldn’t grow at Beachmere, he proved everyone wrong with a magnificent collection of a wide variety of palms, stretching way into the sky - including the best collection of Staghorn ferns, I‘ve ever seen. - with seedlings and new plants growing everywhere.

It is clear from the couple’s example that the simple things in life bring much joy, happiness, and a long and successful marriage.

It was pleasant to have a few minutes away from the deadlines and be able to contemplate the dry gullies and redgums which provide homes for many lizards – some Cranky and some not!

Although, because of the heavy rain patterns at this time of the year, there were not too many dry gullies about another first for climate change!

Cranky Lizard has had the opportunity to gaze into the dust devils whirling about Out West and was moved by a vision of clarity regarding what’s to come, this new year of 2022.

A vision so clear that it seemed sensible to share it with you all.

To begin with, it is a Federal Election Year. And a Federal election Year is the signal to open the doors and let them all out. There will be the major parties – promising what they always promise; some promises have more substance than others, but they are all promises!

Until they are elected; then they become commitments!

Cranky Lizard rushes to point out that the volunteers who turn out in large numbers for the three major parties are worthy of respect. They believe in what they do, and they are prepared to cop some crap for doing so - they have the courage of their convictions.

The major parties are generally more cautious in their promises because they know that one of them will either form the Government or assist in forming the Government, and the electorate will hold them to their promises. But, plenty of babies will be kissed, raffle tickets will be bought, a few cigars chucked about, earnest, ‘looking into your eyes’ handshakes will happen, and you will hear the word “Maaaaate!” spoken quite a fair bit.

And then, of course, there will be the frothing sea of “independents” along with the second-wind candidates – those that have been emphatically voted out of office, unable to accept it and after a ‘makeover’, re-appear at the political table like moaning, hand wringing Banquo Ghosts!

They will promise you anything you want: Freedom, Integrity, Honesty, Trust, “You can count on us “, Lower Taxes, no socialism, more socialism; whatever you want. Tell them, and they will promise you that you can have it as long as you vote for them!

Cranky Lizard observes them with amusement; for the most part they are a political sideshow.

Where you place your vote is up to you. Cranky Lizard reminds you that your vote has consequences; elections are won or lost on a few votes these days. Freedom to safely place your vote without interference is a rare privilege: one of the cornerstones of our democracy and a privilege men and women have fought and died for under the flag of this Nation.

Who will win the Federal Election?

Cranky Lizard does not know – but does not sense huge desire for change across the electorate.

But, what would Lizards know? And the curtain which prevents us from seeing the future is held by the Angels of Mercy.

The viral pest that haunts our homes, buildings, public places, hospitals and lives, will linger on in our community.

We shall simply have to learn to live with it, the best way that we can. It will not destroy us; Cranky Lizard is certain of that, although the cynical behaviour of some of the State Premiers during this time has been pretty destructive to our economy and social cohesion.

Cranky Lizard understands that those

young people. Education systems at all levels disrupted, examinations postponed or cancelled and, in some cases, career opportunities lost.

This coming year holds a much more optimistic outlook for our young people, and deservedly so.

The idea of vaccination mandates is a complicated social dilemma, apart from the obvious health connotations. Federal Legislation on Work Place Health & Safety currently prevails, and Cranky Lizard predicts that the Australian Courts will determine these issues in this coming year.

Breaking out of the restrictions of COVID isolations and the associated protocols will provide many Australians with a profound sense of relief, and this, in turn, will translate into economic activity.

Employment will rise, commercial and business activity will increase, and opportunities to create wealth will be apparent – Australia, as a nation of sensible, optimistic people, will take advantage of those opportunities.

Currently, global tensions are growing, and uncertainty in Ukraine and Taiwan remains a part of international politics.

Cranky Lizard discreetly points out that Australians cannot hide from the consequence of these global tensions. Ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the independent existence of Ukraine as a sovereign State has been a very large burr under the Russian saddle - and they would like to remove it, quickly.

The Russian leader senses weakness and division amongst western democracies and will take an opportunity to reclaim as much of Ukraine as he can if, and it is big if, he thinks he can bear the cost in treasure and lives. Those two factors are all that is holding him back, and there is more emphasis on the economic consequences than the inevitable significant loss of life.

Taiwan will remain a sensitive point of issue between the rest of the world and the People’s Republic of China. It is difficult to see where there are any points of sensible discussion with China over this; they have elevated the claiming of Taiwan into the People’s Republic as a matter of faith to the Central Government.

Diplomatic discussions over matters of faith are always tortuous and obscure; one side remains obdurate, and the other seeks compromise.

This matter is particularly relevant to Australia as it affects our trading sea lanes and the region’s overall stability.

We live in this region, we shall be an important player in the events to come, and they will be testing events.

Despite media-generated noise and bureaucratic interference in national school curricula, Australia is a resilient, multi-racial society that holds all of us in respect.

We have the capacity to deal with these trials, internally generated over our history and mischievous in intent regarding our Head of State arrangement.

Cranky Lizard is certain that most Australians have had a gutful of the Republican nonsense and the ‘change the date’ tragics.

In time and the right circumstances, we, Australians, can deal with these matters; calmly and objectively.

Cranky Lizard believes in this place. No other place in the world has Lizards with frill necks that can write!

Cranky Lizard is an indigenous Australian; always was, always will be!

This will be a Good Year in Australia.

In the interests of full disclosure and transparency: I point out that I, as the writer of this article, have no financial interest in The Island and Surrounds Local News.

My work is all pro bono; I do this because I want to, not because I have to.

Competition Corner The Moreton Bay Regional Council is a democratically-elected Local Government body operating legally under various statutes of Queensland State Law. The Council is entitled, indeed, required, to allocate ratepayers’ funds, collected from Moreton Bay residents, in a manner required by the Local Government Act. The Council may allocate those funds entirely as it sees appropriate; that is not the matter at issue.

But where a considerable portion of these funds is being directed is a concern which may well warrant some open public discussion.

Late last year Mayor Peter Flannery said “We are not just a pit stop on the way to the Sunshine Coast…” And I agree. Indeed, we are not!

We who live here do so under the auspices of the fastest-growing local government body in Australia and, according to some reports, the third-largest local government body in Australia. That makes us a very big deal.

Now, being a very big deal can be good, or it can be challenging.

Why? How does that work?

In local government, if you are a very big deal, you will attract attention from other levels of government, from the media, from local business groups, from local charities, from groups of organised ratepayers, etc., the list goes on.

This attention is based upon the size of the local government body and the amount of finance it generates.

Moreton Bay Regional Council generates a large amount of money from ratepayers and other legal means available to the Council. This, in turn, attracts the kind of attention mentioned above. And there is nothing wrong with that. The Moreton Bay Regional Council operates across a vast range of residential, recreational, industrial, commercial and geographically challenging areas of land.

My observation and experience, having lived in the region for over twenty years, is that the Council does an outstanding job in managing the assets of the community, developing the infrastructure, planning strategically, supporting local small businesses and, generally, making the place work, Which is why the matter of the launch of what appears to be a ratepayer-subsidised local newspaper is a puzzle.

By its actions and policies, developed over several years, the Council is quite clearly in favour of private enterprise.

It also encourages community groups

to become involved in pro-active activities, and its attitude to this specifically, and to business development generally, is refreshing and encouraging.

From 2016, the Council has allocated large amounts of ratepayer funds to a not-for-profit organisation, Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT), which, according to its website “exists to promote, benefit and grow the Moreton Bay Region”. Thus, MBRIT is charged by the Moreton Bay Regional Council with the responsibility of promoting tourism in the Moreton Bay Region, which it does by conducting a series of events, exhibitions, festivals, and other functions related to enhancing the image of the region on a national basis.

MBRIT receives millions of dollars of ratepayer funding from the Moreton Bay Regional Council, and, according to accounts from a number of different sources, I believe that MBRIT discharges those tourism-related activities and responsibilities effectively.

But consider this. The newspaper you have in front of you, The Island and Surrounds Local News, is locally-owned and in six years has grown from nothing to a quality product, due to the skills of local business people who provide the graphic art and compilation, talented local writers, editors and podcasters, and the support of the local business community who purchase advertising space in the paper.

The paper owes its existence to these people alone. It has never received any funding from outside sources, and it does not seek any external funding from local, state or federal governments; it is a proper private enterprise operation.

Like any local newspaper, information about local tourist activities is provided in the editorial content – fishing reports, tide times, local restaurants, local businesses available to service tourists and holidaymakers in the regions covered by the newspaper and various other local and community issues and matters which are relevant to tourists in this region.

Late last year, this newspaper became aware that MBRIT was going to produce a local newspaper that would be in direct competition to this newspaper in the regions it covered, plus some areas around Redcliffe, Deception Bay and Narangba.

“Fair enough”, you say! And so does this newspaper – we don’t shy away from fair competition. That is the essence of private enterprise – which is what this newspaper is about.

We are confident of our product, we know it is good, and we welcome competition in the marketplace.

But, as we have said earlier on these pages, we are puzzled why a heavily

ratepayer-funded body, MBRIT, has decided to use some of these ratepayer funds to initiate direct competition to a local private enterprise business.

We have seen reports that MBRIT has recently received up to $15 million ratepayer dollars to carry out its work over some time.

We believe that small local businesses should not have to compete against a competitor which receives millions of dollars of ratepayer funds to operate their business!

We have contacted the Moreton Bay Regional Council seeking some clarification on this issue and were advised that financial matters of this kind were “commercial-in-confidence” and therefore could not be released.

Most people reading this will know what “commercial-in-confidence” means – I certainly do, having owned and run several businesses of my own.

In my opinion, what this means is smply that “we don’t want to tell you, and we won’t.”

We have also seen reports that senior executives of MBRIT have stated that no ratepayer funds are being used to fund their new newspaper.

Well, strictly speaking, that may well be the case. But any sensible person in business these days is fully aware that if you make claims about the financial structure of certain companies, you need to back up these claims with irrefutable facts – not statements without evidence.

Particularly, when your business receives millions of dollars of ratepayer funds.

What I am actually saying here is that if we ratepayers are funding a newspaper, albeit indirectly, in direct competition to an existing private enterprise newspaper, then as ratepayers we should be aware of that!

Conversely, if we ratepayers are not funding the MBRIT newspaper, we should know that!

I find it difficult to understand what the veil of secrecy is about; if it was their own money - fine, they could claim confidence. But it is not their money – it is ours – the ratepayers, and we should know what we are funding.

Simple as that.

This is not the end of this matter….

Community spirit recognised with new award A passion and commitment for the community is in abundance in our area.

As reported on Page 22 of this issue, not only did Bribie Island VMR’s Graham Gibb receive the Citizen of the Year award, but two more prominent local residents have been recognised for their achievements and contributions in the council’s 2022 Australia Day Awards. They are the first recipients of the new Community Spirit Award, open to entrants who live within or outside the region and also those who aren’t Australian citizens.

Ann Brooks of Bribie Island received her Community Spirit Award for her work with the island’s University of the Third Age (U3A). Ann’s passion for education has brought joy and sparked a love for learning among thousands of others across the region. Her dedication and enthusiasm during her 12 years of service as president of U3A was an inspiration to many, culminating in membership growing from 460 senior citizens when she started in 2004 and almost tripling by the time she handed over the role in 2016. Ann also helped open the highly successful branches at Beachmere and Caboolture.

In addition, she manages the Masters and Apprentices annual art and drama exhibition held at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre (BICAS), giving more than 100 local artists the opportunity to showcase their work. An inspiring educator, manager and friend, Ann truly embodies community spirit, and is so deserving of this honour.

Malcolm “Mick” Klein of MorayfieldMick’s love of sport has inspired him to ensure others in his community have access to everything they need to help achieve their dreams. Through hard work and dedication, Mick established Caboolture Sports Club in 1994, funding its construction by working with venture capitalists and six local sporting groups across softball, touch football, cricket, dog obedience, soccer and rugby union. Under Mick’s leadership, they united to form an umbrella group to help support their different codes, and a place for them to meet and socialise, bringing the community together. He also served as the club’s first President, and helped revive Caboolture Cricket Club when it was threatened with closure in the 1980s.

Thanks to Mick’s passion to help these six foundation clubs reach their goals, each now receives funding from Caboolture Sports Club, providing them with some of the best sporting facilities in Australia.

The club delivers over $1.9 million in cash and in-kind support to the local community each year, including over 300 local sporting clubs, community groups and individual athletes. Mick’s dedication and generosity is helping grow the next generation of sports stars, which is more important than ever as Moreton Bay prepares to become a major hub for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This Award recognises his service and ongoing support for his community.

No relief for Queensland’s excessively tight rental market

Queensland is experiencing record low vacancy rates with most regions remaining much tighter than what the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) classifies as “healthy” (2.6 to 3.5%) during 2021.

The REIQ’s Residential Vacancy Report released today, revealed that vacancy rates got as tight as a mere 0.1 per cent in Maryborough in 2021, hovering just above zero in a record low across the history of the report.

In the neighbouring region of Hervey Bay, vacancies were sitting at 1.0% in the December 2021 quarter. Meanwhile, Bundaberg (0.4%) to its north and Gympie (0.3%) to its south, also continued to feel the strain remaining in incredibly tight territory.

In fact, of the 50 local government areas and sub regions reported on, the only areas that tipped into the “healthy” range during 2021 were within Greater Brisbane – including Brisbane’s inner city (0-5km) at 2.8 per cent (in Mar Qtr) followed by the Bay Islands at 2.7 per cent (in Dec Qtr).

There’s little indication of vacancy rates moving much anytime soon with changes over the past quarter (Sep Qtr – Dec Qtr) mostly confined to a minimal 0.2% up or down, with the exception of Burdekin (near Townsville) which rose by +0.4% to 0.8%, and Maroochy Coast and Hinterland which both tightened by -0.3% to 0.4%.

Queensland coastal tourism centres - Sunshine Coast (0.5%), Caloundra Coast (0.6%), Gold Coast (0.6%), Fraser Coast (0.6%), Noosa (0.8%) were still in high demand with vacancies hardly letting up.

South Wales, the Southern Downs region and the Goondiwindi region held some of the tightest vacancies at 0.2% and 0.3% respectively, perhaps with “border bubble” residents, who used to move freely between the two states, forced to choose a side.

Vacancies were tight right to the top of Queensland too, with the Tablelands (0.2%) and Cook (0.4%) both stagnant, while Mareeba (0.4%) and Cairns (0.7%) moved fractionally by 0.1%.

The regional centres of Rockhampton (0.4%), Toowoomba (0.4%), Mackay (0.7%) and Townsville (0.7%) all stayed relatively firm and tight too, while Gladstone is looking slightly better at 1.2 per cent but also tightening (down -0.2% from 1.4% in the prior quarter).

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said she couldn’t recall a time where tight vacancy rates were so consistently and drastically low across Queensland, citing COVID-19 creating unique behaviour.

“We’re experiencing the perfect storm of low housing supply levels, incredibly high interstate and intrastate migration particularly to our regions, longer length tenancies as tenants choose to stay put for greater security and certainty, and less shared tenancies as people want more space now they’re working from home,”

Ms Mercorella said.

“A rental market as extraordinarily tight as this presents challenges to the local economy and to the community.

“We acknowledge that whilst current market conditions are favourable from an investor’s perspective, no one wants to see people struggling to find a place to live, forced into unsuitable housing (such as big families crammed in studio apartments), or living unsustainably outside of their means.”

Ms Mercorella said the REIQ’s expectation is that 2022 will bring more of the same competition and more needs to be done to relieve pressure on the rental market.

“Demand for rental properties in Queensland will continue to rise along with the rising population and that growing population needs a roof over its head,” Ms Mercorella said.

“With international borders opening, over time we’ll see returning numbers of international students, migrants, and holidaymakers, and this too will add to the strain on rental accommodation.

“Regional areas growing due to new employment prospects will also need to find housing solutions to take advantage of the economic boost a rising population could deliver. For example, Maryborough’s train manufacturing contract is set to support up to 800 jobs over the next decade in the region, but with vacancy sitting at 0.1%, where these workers will live is puzzling.

“Queensland needs additional housing supply to ease these tight conditions and accommodate the masses relocating to the state – and this supply simply can’t come soon enough.”

New location and facility for Caboolture PCYC

The Caboolture PCYC is set to get a new home, in a more central location, in a bid to make it more accessible for locals. A brand-new facility will be constructed on King Street to replace the existing 30-yearold ageing site, currently based in Toovey Street.

The new facility is better serviced by public transport and will enable the provision of high-priority crime prevention, youth development and social support programs for local residents. The move will breathe new life into a service that has been building safer and healthier communities in the region through youth and adult development programs since 1981.

The project will also deliver an economic boost for the Moreton Bay region, creating an estimated 83 jobs during construction and supporting an additional nine new jobs upon completion of the completed facility.

Women’s Fishing Classic

Hi readers of ‘the Local’ Newspaper.

My name is Nicole Robinson. I am a wife and a mother who resides on the Sunshine Coast and who loves fishing. Whilst I may not be the most knowledgeable angler, I certainly am enthusiastic and keen.

Women remain a small minority in this wonderful sport. According to recent sensor data, approximately only 10% of the Australian fishing industry market is female.

Some female anglers still feel intimidated even after entering local fishing competitions, interacting with local tackle shops, acquiring knowledge, and understanding through fishing magazines and communicating with fellow anglers.

My aim, for the past couple of years, has been to encourage likeminded females to ‘give it a go’. To educate and support them to connect with others with similar fishing interests.

Thus the ‘Women’s Fishing Classic’ was born.

The huge success of our first ever Women’s Fishing Classic sparked such interest, that women are already signing up for this year’s competition, greatly increasing our numbers for 2022. We aim to increase our advertising exposure for this year’s competition making it even bigger and better.

This ‘all Ladies’ fishing competition encourages and is open to, every type of recreational female angler, from all ages and skill levels, to compete, hosting saltwater, freshwater, boat, kayak, shore and bait/lure.

WHERE CAN I FISH? Competitors are able to fish anywhere from Inskip Point (not Fraser Island) to the Tweed River.

Offshore competitors can compete up to 70km out to sea. Offshore includes fishing craft within the boundary.

Inshore fishing includes land-based fishing off the beach and everywhere inland on the boundary map.

Heliport approval Creative causes a buzz with talent objectors shines

by Sheree Hoddinett The approval of a heliport at Sandstone Point Hotel and Holiday Resort has been met with massive disappointment by local groups and residents who highly objected to the application. Despite more than 700 formal objections, Moreton Bay Regional Council approved the establishment of the helicopter landing area at their meeting on December 8.

The Pumicestone Area Noise Abatement Group (PANAG Inc.) has been co-ordinating the campaign against allowing helicopter services in this populated and environmentally sensitive area. Chairman Ken Park said those who had objected were not impressed with the way the application had proceeded and would not be giving up their fight.

“Council took eight months and one day to decide this application, during which the staff held meetings with the applicant and allowed him to amend the application; but held no meetings with the objectors,” Mr Park said.

“Now, the objectors have a mere 20 working days, during the Christmas and New Year holidays, to prepare and file an appeal to the court.”

The application lists a large number of prerequisites for incoming flights under a Fly Neighbourly Policy & Landing Procedure (FNPLP). This includes items such as only flying between 7am and 45 minutes before civil twilight; only a limited number of arrivals is allowed each day and month; landing approval required from the hotel and the helicopter is not permitted to land if a non-controlled member of the public is within 30 metres of the aircraft.

Mr Park said PANAG, along with residents in the area, had raised concerns in their objections in regard to birdlife, those driving on the Bribie bridge and also families living close by to the hotel..

“We fought so hard to protect the iconic pelicans and we are now also fighting to protect the lives of drivers who will be terrified by the noise and sudden appearance of low-flying helicopters only metres above their heads,” Mr Park said. “There has also been a complete disregard for the protected resident and migratory birdlife - indeed there has been a less than acceptable consideration of all the prescribed environmental regulation for this sensitive protected area.”

Despite the application being approved by council, Division 1 councillor Brooke Savige voted against it, but in line with the Local Government Act, she said she accepted the decision of

council. Ms Savige said she was disappointed that a more thorough assessment of the environmental impacts of the land use wasn’t conducted.

“In the meeting of December 8, I spoke at length about the reasons for voting against this application,” Ms Savige said.

“At the core of these reasons was my concern that no environmental impact study was undertaken to assess the impact that may occur on our surrounding environmentally sensitive areas.

“In the absence of such a report I found it difficult to be confident that there would be no impact, and therefore, without more information I felt I was unable to support the application in its current form with the information available to me.

“Furthering my decision was the resounding feedback from the community. With over 700 submissions against the application, it was clear that the community had significant concerns and after reading each submission I believe that not all their concerns were able to be mitigated or minimised through conditions. This solidified my voting position.”

Even with voting against the approval, Ms Savige said she hoped there would be no long-term impact experienced due to helicopters flying in to the area.

“Our area is unique and precious,” she said. “We have an array of wildlife and beautiful natural areas that most people value and want to see protected for generations to come.

“However, if there are impacts from the use of helicopters I hope that the conditions outlined in the approval and through the Fly Neighbourly Policy will assist in minimising these and addressing any issues if they arise. “ Moving forward, Mr Park said PANAG would be forging ahead with challenging the council decision.

“Next stage is to file our appeal with the Planning and Environment Court after which we will be appointing planning, aviation, environmental and acoustic experts to present our case,” Mr Park said.

“This is an expense that that we should never have had to bear, but the council has forced us down this path.

“The bottom line is - would you agree to having a heliport on the property next door to your home?”

Jackson Neve might be young, but he already has thoughts on what he’d like to do with his future. A love of drawing from an early age has propelled the 11-year-old from Elimbah to set his sights on a career in comic strips.

However, in order to get there, he knows he has to start small!

It was while he was looking through the last edition of The LOCAL Island and Surrounds News that Jackson noticed there was no comic strip and he decided he wanted to create one.

“When I noticed there was no comic strip in the paper, I emailed Belinda and surprisingly she let me do one,” Jackson said. “I was just brainstorming different dad joke ideas to centre the strip around and this one just came up.”

With his creative mind on the task, Jackson made short work with his first comic strip coming to life in just over a day. It goes to show what you can achieve when you set your mind to something.

“I’ve loved drawing ever since I was little and I just keep practicing,” Jackson said.

“Jackson has always had a creative side and he has loved to draw for as long as we can remember,” his mum Kristy added.

With plans to create more quirky comic strips now and into the future, Jackson has even come up with a name – Rage Comics.

“I thought the name was cool ever since I started drawing the comic, so I added it on,” he said. “I would love the chance one day to start my own comic company. That would be the ultimate dream.”

COVID

The Hidden Cost

by Staff Writer Matt Owen COVID has dominated our lives for two years. The damage from the actual virus and the ripple effect is immeasurable.

When you think of the cost of COVID what do you think? Over 3,000 lost lives in Australia, friends and loved ones falling ill (some with long term issues), lost jobs, homelessness, businesses closing, bankruptcies, vaccination debates, cancelled elective surgeries, the struggling economy and more recently the supply chain issues, loss of freedoms, lockdowns, and vaccine adverse reactions? How about the actual cost, in dollars of vaccinations and testing? But when you dig a little deeper, what do you find, beneath the surface, the hidden costs.

Mental Health

How often have you heard or thought, ‘I’m sick of all this COVID stuff?’. Two years of one topic dominating social media, mainstream media, and everyday conversation.

It doesn’t matter what the topic would be, you would be sick of it. Australia’s great love of sport doesn’t even go nearly this far. The pandemic has chewed up more column centimetres, more airtime, more posts, more tweets, more texts, more advertising, more memes, and more discussions than any other topic in history.

This leads to mental fatigue. Everyone has mental fatigue. Our brains are not meant to cope with so much focus on one particular topic. It can’t be healthy. It is ironic how you can have COVID fatigue from not even contracting COVID. Spare a thought for those with mental health issues, disabilities, health issues, stuck interstate, overseas, and in aged care. Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are the three that spring to my mind first with mental health. COVID has made life even more challenging with lockdowns, vaccinations, financial concerns, emotional upheaval, mandates, and other measures. The uncertainty around COVID and the future has simply become too much for some.

How do you measure this?

While there have been significant increases in funding in mental health support, the challenge is to translate this funding into improved access, not a three month wait for an appointment. Mental health and the long-term effects of the COVID pandemic is perhaps the largest hidden cost of COVID.

Finance and Shelter

One of the major stresses of life is personal finance. Personal finance is a major influencer of relationships and happiness.

How can you be happy if you don’t know where you are sleeping or what you are eating next? This is the first time in my memory that homelessness has been such an issue in regional areas. Surely this should be prioritised and more can be done to help these struggling families.

This must be of the highest priority.

Establish a task force or do whatever needs to be done. This is un-Australian!

Perhaps, it is time to consider allowing access to superannuation once again for those with, say $100,000 or more. It is their money after all.

The Supply Chain and Staff Shortages

2022 has seen a new challenge of COVID illness crippling the supply chain. Transport, warehousing, retail, hospitality, agriculture, and logistics have all been hit with staff shortages due to a high percentage of staff contracting COVID. This has

created staffing issues and time delays related to closure and cleaning. And it is on repeat mode. This has been too much for some businesses that have closed their doors or at a minimum have moved to less efficient business models to avoid closures. Some are calling this current period a lockdown without the support of a lockdown.

Mandates have also played a role in this, with other industries, such as health and education, the standouts. The reaction to this is to open-up international borders (to the vaccinated) to assist with the agricultural sector. In many instances the ‘last standing staff’ cop the brunt of the stress, and this flows through to mental health and possibly financial stresses. To assist with this, we now have ‘essential workers’ and ‘critically essential workers’.

A Divided Society

Has a topic ever divided Australia like the vaccination debate? Lost friends and loved ones, and ongoing bickering is another major ripple effect of COVID and the emphasis on vaccination. When the talk of vaccination first hit our shores, I was convinced that it would be seen along the lines of sexuality, gender, pregnancy, religion, and such personal choices. That is, it is your choice and your business. How I was wrong! With all the eggs thrown in the ‘vaccination’ basket this was not the case. For the first time in my life, I was to see discrimination based on a personal choice. One person can do something, but another can’t. This again, is un-Australian.

I have heard the counter-argument of not being vaccinated considered selfish.

Such a divisive issue! So much back and forward and counter-punching! Punishing those that choose not to be vaccinated was never the answer. Recently I noticed a dog in a café with their owners, a café that doesn’t welcome the unvaccinated due to state government regulations for this establishment (they are just following the rules). A dog is welcome but not a human-being. Are we really ok with this?

Providing alternative solutions is an option that should have been investigated further. Regular testing, alternative vaccinations, improved immunisation and flexible working arrangements should have all been on the table for discussion.

Alternative solutions were not explored or offered to those that chose not to be vaccinated in so many cases. Taking away recreational activities such as movies, concerts, eating at restaurants and cafes is one thing but to take away the right to make an income? Too much, too far and starting to be wound back in some parts of the world. What is expected of these people when they run out of money after not having employment for a period of time?

Transparency

There has always been a concern around transparency and data collection and how it is distributed to the public around COVID. Have people died with COVID or from COVID? Were they vaccinated or unvaccinated? What type of vaccination?

What was the vaccination load at the time of death? What has happened to deaths that were previously from influenza?

What about suicides and mental health?

How are we measuring mental health?

There is simply too much ‘grey’.

Digging Deeper As of October 2021, the median age for those who died from COVID was 82 years of age (health.gov.au, 16 January 2022).

Guess what the average life expectancy is of an Australian?

So, during a pandemic the lives lost by age were not dissimilar to the average life expectancy? Let that one sink in.

Here is another one: In 2020, it was estimated that there were 50,000 deaths from the other ‘c’ word (cancer) and 150,000 new cases. One in two Australian men and women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 (cancer.org.au). With 898 deaths in 2020 from COVID, it was the 38th leading cause of death (abs.gov.au).

38th! That is not a typo! Why is it that we have, as a society, lived with cancer and heart disease for so long, but COVID has caused such damage to our society and future generations. Should heart disease, cancer, road deaths and other reasons of death receive more attention coupled with financial and emotional support? Did we really need to create so much damage based on a virus that has these characteristics? So many billions of dollars and so much damage to humanity.

Or was it all necessary? That is the million-dollar question.

Politics

Politics and pandemics don’t mix. We now know that. From the time the Queensland election was based around ‘keeping Queenslanders safe’ to the beginning of the unofficial federal campaign with Labor going heavily at the government around the management of COVID. The constant bickering between state and federal governments has been embarrassing at times. Why could they not have worked together more efficiently? Why so much confusion and why so many failures?

Or am I being too harsh? Should we be judging our politicians against other global leaders and their results? Elections will answer this question.

Pauline Hanson has recently called for a Royal Commission into how federal, state and territory governments have managed the pandemic. Surely this makes sense, so we don’t make the same mistakes

next time. How else will we learn? The upcoming federal election will be the barometer for what the Australian public really thinks of the management of the pandemic at a federal level. Will it be a pat on the back and another term for Prime Minister Scott Morrison, a victory for Anthony Albanese and Labor and what will it mean for the other parties? What are you thinking? At a state level, we have another two years so there will be four years since the start of COVID by then.

Is there a Positive?

A positive has been that so many people have reassessed their view on life, have travelled, have simplified, and have appreciated life more. There are some winners I’m sure from a commercial sense as demand has sky-rocketed in some areas. Good luck to them. It is a struggle to come up with too many positives when our lives have been turned upside down for two years with no clear end in sight (at the time of writing), apart from Omicron being described as a less damaging variant.

So, with all the hidden costs rippling through with COVID, has our approach over nearly two years of minimising cases and then letting Omicron rip through been the right approach? Have mandates forcing people to get vaccinated, so they can work in certain industries, been the right approach? What about vaccinating children and pushing the school year back to allow greater vaccination rates? The ongoing boosters that will be required to keep the green ticks. Where will this end and how long and deep will the ripples be felt? Are the hidden costs going to be more than the actual costs? What have been the real and hidden costs for you? How will we look back at this time in 20 years? Will we have a sense of pride or shame? What has been your hidden cost of COVID? So many questions remain unanswered.

Deciding if you are a hobby or a business can have major ramifications if you get it wrong.

A hobby is something you love doing, spend hours on it and even if you sell the items the sale price does not reflect the time and effort. The income from the sales is generally used to buy more materials and you generally can’t live on the money generated. Registration for an ABN is not required and income and expenses are not declared on your tax return.

A business is commenced with the view to making sufficient money for living. Even if those profits can be sometime in the making, the idea is to grow the business as an income making project. Registration for an ABN (+ GST if required or elected) is mandatory and an Income & Expense statement is prepared and becomes part of your tax return.

The most difficult decision is deciding when a hobby becomes a business or when a business reduces in turnover or assets to become only a hobby.

This decision can take into account a number of factors including: • Treating the project as a business i.e. advertising and promotion • Record keeping is essential in a business • Expectation of profits, preparation of business plans and budgets • Time spent on generation of income is relative to the income generated • Value of assets owned by the business used toward profit making.

One favourite explanation of mine in determining the difference is the anticipation of income. Owning half a dozen mixed breed cattle on small acreage would not be a business. If those cattle were stud cattle and the progeny sold for say $4000 each, six progeny at $4000 totalling $24000 would be far in excess of rates, fodder, vet and water etc. This would be classified as a business.

In the end it is your intent that determines the final decision.

A notorious stretch of the D’Aguilar Highway, between Sandy Creek and Kilcoy, is undergoing safety improvement works to protect drivers and help reduce the potential for serious crashes.

The $19 million project is already underway with funding provided by the Federal Government as part of its $1.5 billion infrastructure investment response to COVID-19, announced in June 2020.

With more than 7800 drivers using the road each day and connecting the Bruce Highway to the Caboolture, Wamuran, Woodford and Kilcoy communities, the D’Aguilar Highway has been identified as an important link in the state’s road network, highlighting the safety project as critical to be completed.

The highway will also be widened to accommodate a wide-centre line treatment, allowing for greater separation between vehicles travelling in opposite directions and also playing an important part in reducing the likelihood of head-on

crashes.

Construction will continue until late-2022, with the project supporting more than 60 local jobs in the process. Federal Member for Longman, Terry Young, said just one life lost on Australian roads was one too many.

“Key works on this project will include widening from west of Neurum Road to Sandy Creek Road and from Arnolds Road North to west of Scrubby Creek, installing a wide centre line treatment, extending and replacing culverts, and shoulder widening.”

New safety barriers and signage will also be installed, along with vegetation management. The project is jointly funded by the Federal and State Government contributing $15.2 million and $3.8 million respectively.

has enabled me to be able to help so many people liaise with the police in circumstances where they haven’t always felt like they could.”

So why did he head down the path of volunteering?

“I’ve always been busy and my life has always been about doing things,” Graham said. “Even when I think back, I’ve always wanted to join a sporting team or run professionally or I always wanted to go places. I always wanted something and I probably never sat still.

“I’m always looking for something and when I retired after 40 years of work and settled in Ningi, I needed something else.

I’ve always liked the water and I’ve always liked radio and I always liked police work.

I enjoy what I do but juggling the two priorities (VMR and ViP) can be a little difficult at times but I manage it so it doesn’t become overwhelming.”

“Organising the expo is really 7 months of work to get it all sorted but it’s something that brings the community together,” he said. “It brings all the emergency services people together and they’re all in the one place.

“In recent years we have started doing

more with the kids, bringing the young kids in as ambassadors and local groups like scouts to be a part of things. Because that’s what it’s about, the kids and getting them involved with everything.

“The next expo, we’ll look at the more practical side of doing things and bringing in more hands on involvement and activities.”

Surprisingly, for someone who spends a lot of time helping within the community, Graham does actually have some spare time for a few rounds of golf on Wednesday and Saturday.

While Graham admits he’s no spring chicken these days, he has no plans on slowing down anytime soon. He very much has a soft spot for the Bribie community around him and will continue to do his part for as long as he can.

“The answer is if you don’t use it, you lose it,” he said. “I like being with people and I like doing things and I like to contribute.

There might come a time when I have to stop but I’ve always been of the thought that you can’t sit around and do nothing.

Graham is also the man behind the island’s successful annual Emergency Services Expo, an achievement he is more than proud of and is always looking for different avenues to continue growing the event.

Keeping the volunteer spirit alive in the community Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers are on the hunt for a more permanent base.

“Laurie at Storage King has been so good to us from day one and sponsored us with a shed for all our gear,” Daryl says.

“That’s now evolved into 2 sheds and he has sponsored us for the whole time. We’re just so grateful for his support. Our focus now is on recruitment, awareness, and a main base, so we can have everything in the one spot. We’re also looking for a major sponsor to come on board as well.”

From local events to big shows, sporting clubs and school fetes, this dedicated team of experienced and equipped volunteers provide injury and illness assistance when it’s needed the most. It’s a role that isn’t always appreciated enough but one that is necessary to help ensure community events can go ahead safely.

Always on the hunt for new faces to help out, Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers is looking for those interested to consider reaching out. So, what makes a good volunteer?

Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers first started in 2018 because a need was identified following the demise of a similar organisation. Daryl Bull (vice president) and Di Nicholls-Bull (secretary) have both been a part of the group since its humble beginning. Initially, there was only 7 people and now the group has expanded

“Someone that makes a commitment and they actually want to be there as we have had people turn up in the past and then disappear,” Di says. “We want people to make a commitment, but they don’t have to go to every event. They do have to be well presented and be able to talk to people as well. Ideally what we’d like to recruit is people who are retired and still want to do something. They don’t have to come from the health or medical industry.

All they need is first aid, CPR, blue card and a definite commitment to be a part of the group.”

“Even mums who have kids at school and can offer a few hours during the week or a husband and wife team on the weekend,” Daryl adds. “It’s very difficult for organisations like ours because no one wants to volunteer anymore, it’s a dying breed. But when people go to an event or a show, they still expect someone there to give them a band aid or help if they need it.”

Working under the umbrella of Queensland First Aid Volunteers, the Moreton Bay group cover a wide range of events including:

While not a prerequisite for becoming a part of Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers, some current members do have a medical background. Anyone who has previous medical/health experience or is interested in furthering their medical training is encouraged to get in touch with the group.

“Basic first aid and CPR, as well as a Blue Card and Covid vaccination now, is all they need to start with,” Daryl says. “If people want to progress, there is that opportunity to go to a medic level within the group and we will assist anyone

“In 2021 we covered 107 events for the year, which wasn’t a bad outcome given the impact of the pandemic on everyone else,” Daryl says.

“We’ll do a whole range of events,” Di adds.

“We cover local school fetes, Caboolture and Redcliffe Show; the BMX clubs at Pine Rivers and Caboolture - we have an annual contract with them; Burpengary Pony Club and all of their events down there.

We also do events like Dayboro Day, Samford Music Under the Stars and events on Bribie. Anything in the Moreton Bay Region, which is quite an area to cover.”

Moreton Bay First Aid Volunteers is a registered charity with the Australian Charities & Not-for-Profits Commission and also endorsed as a Public Benevolent Institution with the Australian Tax Office.

The group meet at the Burpengary Community Hall on Station Road, Burpengary for training on the first and third Tuesday of every month (6.30-8.30pm). PLANTING AND CULTIVATION Plant the trees on a raised mound in the garden and keep it well mulched.

This will stop the most common problem “Root Rot” as the plant hates wet feet. Anti-Rot will help you solve this problem. Dig your hole, loosening the soil around the bottom and sides of the hole, mix in some Blood and Bone, teasing out the root system so that it mixes with the soil that is being packed around it.

If the garden soil has poor drainage, you can create an artificial mound.

Build a rock wall in a circle 1.5 – 2 metres in diameter and 15-25 cms high. Fill with sandy soil and compost.

Plant the tree in the centre of the mound.

Hi, I hope you are all doing ok and enjoying your garden. So, let’s sit down for a minute and relax and have a coffee break.

COFFEE How about some home-grown coffee – using your own coffee beans!

East Africa is where Coffea arabica comes from. The coffee shrub grows to approximately 3 metres high and has beautiful dense, dark green, shiny foliage with fragrant white flowers.

They should be grown in a frost-free situation and be protected from cold winds. The most suitable position is lightly shaded with at least half a day’s sunlight.

They need plenty of water during Spring to Autumn. With a sufficient amount of water, they will grow in a variety of soil types. A slightly acid soil with lots of compost is desirable.

Plant the shrubs at least 2 metres apart. During their growing season an application of a complete fertilizer will help with growth and fruit yields.

Plants will produce a few beans after 2 to 3 years, but after 6 to 7 years, they will average about 700 grams of cured coffee. A happy plant will double that amount.

Plants are cut back by one-third when they reach the height of 1 metre, to encourage low bushy growth.

COFFEE HARVESTING The cherry-sized berries are ready to be picked when they become a reddish purple colour. Process either of the following ways.

Fresh berries are removed by hand and placed in a bucket of water. Rub and stir until the beans become papery and then wash most of the loose pulp away. Spread the cleaned beans in the sun to dry and then rub any remaining pulp from the seeds.

Roast in an oven at 200C-plus.

Until the green beans are roasted, coffee does not have the characteristic aroma or flavour we are familiar with.

Now water well, remembering to keep the mulch away from the stem.

Keep the soil moist but not saturated. Protect the trees from a windy position. Continue to keep mulch the tree out from the drip line. This helps keep nutrition in the soil, conserves moisture, stops weeds and helps the biological control of soil diseases.

The Avocado tree is ready to bear fruit in 3 years and will produce at least 30 fruit. The crop increases proportionately until the tree is 8 years old, and can be capable of producing over 300

The fruit will not ripen until picked, so it can be left on the tree from 3-4months after reaching maturity. To test if the fruit is mature, pick one as a sample and keep in a warm place.

If it ripens within 10 days the rest of the fruit can be picked, as desired. The trees will set lots of small fruit, but it cannot hold all these fruit, so a lot will drop off. This shedding will continue until the fruit reaches maturity.

AVOCADO

Leave the berries intact and dry them in the sun, this produces a full-flavoured or rich-bodied coffee quite different in character to the washed coffee recipe. Again, beans are roasted in a hot oven at 200C-plus, until they are easily broken. You can test by breaking in your hand or by biting.

Roasting time can vary from five to twenty minutes depending on the quantity of beans roasted. Roast to taste. After roasting, beans should be air-cooled as quickly as possible, using a fan.

It is important to package your coffee in an air-tight container immediately after production. Roasted beans will become stale at room temperature within 10 days and ground coffee within just a few days.

Many hand and electric grinders are now available, so that fresh coffee can be percolated or filtered whenever desired. It takes approximately 500600 grams of fresh berries to make 100 grams of clean dried beans.

Main Varieties: – HASS – Matures August to December. Fruit is pear shaped, but with shorter, thick neck. The skin is thick and rough. As fruit ripens it turns deep purple to black and the flesh is creamy yellow with a nutty flavour.

SHARWILL – Matures July to October. Fruit is pear shaped with smooth soft green skin. The flesh is creamy

STEP 2: Remove the lower gearbox oil drain plug, then the top oil level plug. If there are any signs of water contamination in the gearbox oil stop right there!

It’s now a job for your marine mechanic.

Most outboards have oil seals to keep oil in and water out on the gearshift shaft, the drive shaft and the prop shaft. Always check the prop shaft to make sure there is no fishing line wrapped around, as this can damage the prop shaft seal.

STEP 1: Remove the prop split pin or tab washer then undo the prop nut and slide the prop off. Take careful note of which way any tapered thrust washers are fitted, it’s very important that they be refitted correctly. STEP 4: Connect the gear oil pump to the bottom bung hole, then slowly work the pump until oil flows out of the top oil level bung hole. Filling the gearbox from the bottom up avoids any air pockets and confirms that the gearbox is full. Now put the top bung in first - this creates a vacuum allowing you to remove the gear oil bottle and replace the lower level bung with minimum oil loss.

Bribie Island Golf Club

To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.

Interconnected

by Amelia Strazdins The basis of our daily living links back to human interaction and interconnectedness. It is something that many of us may take for granted, working alongside co-workers, or spotting a friend whilst completing some shopping.

However, not every person feels included and a part of this interconnectedness that forms within communities. From people who have recently moved, to older members of the community, many people feel disconnected or isolated from participating in local events. This is an issue that has only been further exacerbated by lockdowns and Covid.

Bribie itself fosters close community spirit, which has been evident in the

support shown to local businesses and general good spirit found on the Island. Part of that community spirit is found through involvement in local groups and smaller actions, such as getting to know your neighbour better. Such effort, although it may seem small, contributes greatly to the foundations of positive community spirit. It is not just friendship that we can gain from taking these actions but also knowledge.
