Hello Everyone, Welcome to issue 72, and of course, Happy New Year! Now, what will 2022 bring us, I wonder?

First up, Cranky Lizard is on Holidays and will be back in issue 73. I know he will be missed.

I would like to welcome Kym Braithwaite back to the Local News as Chief of Staff. Kym will be looking after all our editorial and is working very closely with Michael Thomas to ensure we continue to offer quality balanced local content.

This month we have a variety of articles covering some wonderful initiatives and topical issues affecting our region. For example, a promise of more local doctors, which many have been asking for, skin cancer awareness and the chance to See Yourself in Orange by joining Bribie SES. In 2022 The Local News will continue to create discussions about real local issues as they come up, and as always, please support our local businesses to help keep our economy going.

Thank you all Andrew would have been astounded at the incredible outpouring of grief and support that he received on his Last Ride from Bribie Island, the last thing he would have expected is people waving goodbye to him along the waterfront and all the way through to the overpasses at Burpengary, because Andrew never behaved the way he did for any other reason than to just be himself.

He was known as Kiwi by his friends in the car and bike community, he was Andrew to his family, clients and to me.

But no matter what you called him he would always do his best to help you if he could and treated everyone equally. He was friendly, and chatty, (nothing like me at all) and then there was those shorty shorts that he would wear as we walked our dogs on the waterfront.

I will admit to trying to hide when he first starting wearing them, but one day, after a very loud discussion regarding those shorts, where he said to me “What does it matter what I wear! I’m happy being me! I’m not hurting anyone else!

Why can’t you accept that!” I realised he was right, and I am now so very grateful that I got over my “What will people think” attitude and embraced him just being “Kiwi”.

How great would it be if all of us could just embrace ourselves and accept that everyone is different and it doesn’t matter what you wear, as long as we treat each other with respect.

I can’t thank the Bribie Community enough for the ongoing support and care that I have received since losing Andrew.

Often in communities it’s easy for people to focus on negative attitudes, but I do hope that Andrews Last Ride has proven to us all that Bribie Island and surrounds are a community of caring and supportive people who will look after one of their own when needed.

It would seem reasonable that this “large and successful” company should now actually do what they have been promising for a decade?

Shout Out to Local Beachmere Business We would like to give a big shout out to the Beachmere Village Takeaway.

Owners, Mark & Noeleen Laffey, afforded themselves only three days off over the Christmas break. Opening the rest of the time, offering great food and service, not only to we Beachmere locals, but to the many visitors to our lovely piece of paradise throughout this busy festive period.

Many local Beachmere businesses closed their doors prior to Christmas Eve re-opening again on the 4th of January 2022. With most businesses having worked tirelessly throughout the year, accompanied with the uncertainty of the past two years, we understand the necessity of businesses to enjoy some muchearned time off. However, this is also one of our busiest times of the year as we live in a very popular holiday destination.

Perhaps local businesses might consider if this is the right time to be closing their doors and missing out on a potentially prosperous opportunity and contemplate taking some well-deserved R & R after our visitors have returned home.

Michelle, Beachmere Elephant in the room I read with interest Alistair Gray’s very positive report on the Pacific Harbour development. I am a resident of Pacific Harbour, and it is indeed a fine development. It is interesting however that the article does not address the “elephant in the room”, namely the failure of QM Properties to develop the Marina Village. QM’s marketing material has for years made announcements such as “The Marina Village development will be the crowning jewel of the waterfront precinct”. Another brochure tells us that “future plans for the Marina Village include restaurants, cafes, specialty stores and residential apartments.” This has been the marketing spiel for over a decade, and yet there is no sign of any development along these lines. Many people bought into the precinct on the basis of these promises - and all have been left disappointed. It would seem reasonable that QM should be held to account on this issue, and that firm plans should be put in place for this development. One wonders whether the decade of advertising of the “Marina Village” could be perceived as misleading

New projects set to benefit from Building Better Regions Fund With a focus on growth into the future, new projects can receive a share of $250 million in federal funding available under the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

The BBRF supports economic and social infrastructure for the long-term benefit of regional communities by creating jobs and helping them rebound strongly from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Local governments and eligible incorporated not-for-profit organisations can again apply for grants of $5000 up to $10 million to cover 50% or more of eligible project costs.

Andrew’s Last Ride On a sunny Saturday morning last month, hundreds of people lined Welsby Parade, Bribie Island Bridge and points along Bribie Island Road to pay their respects as 400 motorcycles and several classic cars escorted the body of Andrew ‘Kiwi’ McGillivray

on his final journey aboard his 1975 El Camino ute, accompanied by his devoted wife and soulmate for 30 years, Cathy.

Arriving at the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance in Deception Bay the entourage was greeted by hundreds more who had come together for a Celebration of the life of this popular, respected and colourful identity, so suddenly and tragically taken in a road accident. A rousing Maori Haka welcomed Andrew in his pictorially-decorated coffin, before being carried into the chapel where 200 guests were gathered, with friends and family in New Zealand and the USA being able to participate via videolink.

Understandably, there was sadness at the passing of this larger-than-life proud Kiwi who had enthusiastically inspired and helped so many others to achieve their personal goals, while his humour, friendliness and colourful sense of style always put smiles on peoples’ faces.

Leaving the chapel to the strains of Pokarekare-Ana, El Camino conveyed our friend away for the last time, to applause and the mighty roar of Harley-Davidson engines.

Truly, he will be missed. But never forgotten.

Cathy had insisted that everyone attending should “wear the loudest, brightest colours you own!” And they did, earning the observation as she began her eulogy, “You’re all amazing; and of course he would have expected nothing less.”

So it’s not surprising that, beyond the profound sense of loss, this occasion, lovingly orchestrated by Cathy and close relatives, reflected the love and joy which Andrew brought to others, by offering a true celebration of a life well-lived and so generously shared. Tears were shed, but, from the moment Cathy began her unconventional, but so “right”, remembrances with a description of the outfit in which her beloved husband was now dressed, laughter prevailed. Andrew would have approved.

Political Correctness: Believe in it or not!

By Richard Lancaster As each new year rolls around, “Political Correctness” appears to encroach more and more into our daily lives. So what is Political Correctness?

It’s all about us choosing to use words and actions that avoid disparaging, insulting or offending others. These “others” include people of different race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, financial status or physical disability. The term came to us from social movement activists in the 1970s, who used it as an effective means of challenging deep-rooted prejudices which existed in our past behaviour and language.

But name-changing to rid the language of names which caused offence goes back still further. During the 1789 French Revolution, when aristocrats were having their heads lopped off, the authorities banned the use of playing cards that featured images of kings and queens. They replaced them with images of the Revolution leaders. In Australia, during the first World War, jam-filled buns known as “Berliners” were renamed “Kitchener” buns, and the luncheon sausage called “Fritz” was renamed “Devon”, a name that is still used today.

In 1917 King George V, Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather, changed the royal family’s surname from Saxe-Coburg Gotha to Windsor, said to be because a German bomber named the Gotha 4 was bombing England at the time, although it’s more likely that it was due to anti-German sentiment. The German Shepherd dog was renamed “Alsatian” and German biscuits were renamed “Empire” biscuits because of strong anti-German feelings.

In more recent times the death of George Floyd, and the subsequent Black Lives Matter movement, sent United States food and beverage manufacturers hurriedly changing brand names, some of which had been accepted for a century or more. The 100-year-old Eskimo Pie brand chocolate-coated ice cream bar enjoyed by

millions suddenly became Edy’s Pie (a nod to one of the company's founders, Joseph Edy) because the original name was said to be offensive to the Eskimo nation. PepsiCo scrapped the 130-year-old Aunt Jemima breakfast cereal name as it reflected racist stereotypes. A school in the United States renamed Easter eggs as “Spring Spheres”, so as not to offend people who did not celebrate Easter.

But political correctness has spread worldwide. The European Parliament banned sexist terms such as “man” and so “manhole” covers became “utility hole” covers. In Britain, the classic English dessert “Spotted Dick” is now known as “Spotted Richard”.

A British council banned the term “Brainstorming” and replaced it with “Thought Showers”, as the former might offend epileptic sufferers. A job advertisement was rejected by a British newspaper as it used the words “reliable” and “hard-working” in it. Evidently these words could be seen as offensive to “unreliable” and “lazy” people.

In Australia, we have not escaped food and beverage name changes either.

Arnott’s “Golliwog” biscuits are now “Scalliwags”. Coles “Creole” Creams are seemingly no more. Allen’s “Red Skins” have been rebranded “Red Ripper”.

Those deliciously chewy small brown gummies are no longer “Chicos” as that name in Spanish can be offensive.

So they are now called “Cheekies”. The iconic “Coon” cheese created in 1926

by Philadelphia cheesemaker Edward William Coon, will, from July 1 be known as “Cheer” cheese.

And finally, the Gold Coast’s Sea World has the last word in this brief and by no means exhaustive foray into our Politically Correct Brave New World.

They have renamed their family of “Fairy” penguins “Little” penguins as they did not want to upset the gay community. Evidently “fairy” is a derogatory name for an effeminate gay man in some countries.

Specific Collars Now Required for Dangerous Dogs Under new Queensland legislation all regulated dogs, including restricted breeds, declared dangerous dogs and declared menacing dogs, are now required to wear a specific type of distinctive red and yellow striped collar.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said this replaces previous legislation where the appearance of the required collar was not specified and there were inconsistencies across different local government areas.

“From 1 January 2022 all regulated dogs in Queensland must wear a collar that has red and yellow angled reflective stripes,” Mr Furner said.

“We want the same collar worn everywhere, so we all know what to

look out for.”

Restricted breeds are dog breeds that are not permitted to be imported into Australia. Declared dangerous and menacing dogs are dogs that have been declared by the relevant local council.

Mr Furner said making the distinctive collar mandatory would help promote responsible management of regulated dogs and allow local government officers and community members to quickly identify a regulated dog.

“If you are aware of a regulated dog not wearing a distinctive collar, call your local council and don’t approach the dog,” he said.

The changes followed consultation with local governments in partnership with the Local Government Association of Queensland.

The pandemic, as we are all aware, has brought with it many difficulties and challenges. However, it has also created various advancements in technology, medicine, and education.

In the last two years education has changed drastically. There has been a pivotal shift in learning, as students and teachers across all levels of education have turned predominantly to online resources. For all involved the transition was not so much a smooth one, rather a learn as you go situation. From primary school to university, zoom became a crucial aspect of all students lives.

Two years later, it seems that printed textbooks may be a thing of the past. Despite the trials and

tribulations that this change has presented to all involved, it has also provided a new approach to learning and opportunities to all students.

Even as many students are primarily back in schools, online learning has certainly become a permanent aspect of 21st century education.

The expansion of these resources has also brought further opportunities, with students able to explore extra subjects and classes more specific to their interests. Such endeavours are supported by programs such as distance education, which draws specific focus on assisting students in rural areas. Online learning and teaching also has supported the expansion of alternative forms of learning.

GRANTECH

Schools on Bribie are in the perfect position to allow students to explore different aspects of education in a new manner. From the exploration of the local environment to interacting with members of the community, letting students experience these opportunities and gain these skills remain equally as important as learning within a classroom. The local high school has embraced such changes with open arms, through interactive learning spaces and afterschool programs. Classes and projects that are also offered already explore these ideas through subjects such as marine science, but with a shift in focus from traditional education and additional support we can further these opportunities.

Throughout all these changes to these education systems, it is perhaps most important to recognise and acknowledge the wonderful teachers. They have had to constantly adapt to situations, learn new programs and adopt a new style of learning- connecting to their students from a distance. Our local teachers, at both the primary and high schools, have given their all to offer ongoing support and encouragement, and for that we thank them greatly.

And so, it seems we have entered a new era of education.

Funding boost on offer for manufacturing businesses If you have a manufacturing business, you could be eligible for federal funding. The $280 million in funding is on offer in a bid to help manufacturing businesses grow and create new jobs as they help secure economic recovery across the country.

The matched funding is available through Round 2 of the Integration and Translation Streams of the $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI).

While still part of much community discussion and vigorous debate, I suspect this will continue for a few years. However, there is clear evidence the mood has changed, as revealed in the Australia Talks National Survey of 60,000 Australians, commissioned by the ABC in 2021.

nity, I thought it would be valuable to understand why our First Nation’s People want the change. But, first, we need to acknowledge that the Aboriginal People have been custodians of the land we call Australia for over 60,000 years, the oldest living culture in the world.

When the First Fleet arrived back in 1788, there were more than 500 Indigenous Groups and about 750,000 people. Yet, sadly, by the 1900s, the population was down to 75,000 people, a loss of 675,000 people. In addition, colonisation saw many indigenous communities removed from their lands, often by force and many unspeakable acts of cruelty and

We cannot change the past, but we can acknowledge the hurt caused by our ancestors and respect the feelings of our First Nation’s People by working towards building a more inclusive and multicultural Australia.

Changing the date of Australia day is a small price to pay in working towards reconciliation, the removal of a divided Australia, and establishing national unity.

As part of the reconciliation process, the Queensland Government has committed to developing a Treaty between Government and the First Nations People. The new date for Australia Day will be part of those discussions.

This brief article intends not to provide a potted history but to get you to stop and think and want to go and find out more about this important time in our history.

Hey, it's a holiday, a time for family, friends and fun! A time for National Unity.

Schools back, for most, holidays are over and it is our last break before Easter in April.

Australia Day is a day to acknowledge the past and the arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, in New South Wales on the 26th January in 1788 with the raising of the Flag of Great Britain by Captain Arthur Phillip.

Since then, celebrated in different forms as Foundation Day, First Landing Day and not until 1946, the Commonwealth Government, States and Territories agreed there shall be one national day, ‘Australia Day.’ Then celebrated on the Monday closest to 26th January and since 1994 marked on the actual day or the following Monday.

For years, First Nations Peoples and many in the community have sought to change the date for our national celebration. The tide is gradually turning while still open to active community discussion and debate. The reality is that it is another step we need to take in the reconciliation process. It is time to put aside our egos and prejudices and instead, focus on bringing everyone together and moving forward as one people instead of a divided nation.

This year Australia Day has special meaning as we reflect on almost two years of the pandemic.

Lives turned upside down and an unbelievable numbers of deaths worldwide, yet we have been in a virtual bubble protected from much of the impacts here in Queensland.

We now face a rapidly changing envi-

It is very much a time to celebrate our achievements as a nation, particularly over the last two years. We need to acknowledge the service of our leaders and all those in public office, no matter what your politics.

It is easy to criticise, but someone has to make the hard decisions, and we should be thankful democracy has stood the test, and there has been someone there to lead us.

It is time we acknowledge all the first responders, the Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Police Officers, Fire Crew, Defence Force Personnel, and all those in back-office roles who just made things happen. Also, those working in supermarkets, retailers, hospitality workers, and many more. People have just got on and done what has needed to be done, often at much personal sacrifice and risk.

Doctor boost for Bribie Island

Highlighting the importance of skin cancer awareness Taking slip, slop and slap up a notch, a national campaign to raise skin cancer awareness is being rolled out this summer.

We will soon see an increase in Doctor numbers, on and around Bribie Island, due to a change in classification allowing recruitment from further afield.

The Distribution Priority Area classification change, means clinics on Bribie Island will now be able to recruit from a larger pool of GPs, making it easier to hire new Doctors. This includes GPs who have trained overseas or those under Australia-trained bonded doctors with return of service obligations.

Usually only rural and remote areas receive automatic DPA status but this has now been changed to include regional and larger rural towns in a bid to get more GPs, nurses and other allied health professionals to the areas where they are needed.

The change came into effect as of January 1, with local practices now able to take advantage and bring new faces in to see patients.

Students who accepted a Commonwealth Supported Place, in an Australian medical course, in return for a commitment to work in a regional, rural and remote area at the end of their studies must also work in a DPA, including Bribie.

The move has the full support of Member for Longman, Terry Young, who said this would provide a real difference to Bribie patients. “Short term, this means that local practices on Bribie Island can begin reaching out to overseas Doctors who want to move to our region and practice

The federal government will also invest in a significant incentive for eligible Doctors and nurse practitioners to practice in rural, remote or very remote areas of Australia, by eliminating all or part of their Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) debt subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

A $10 million campaign will hit our beaches this summer to remind all Australians to be UV aware and stay safe in the sun in 2022. The campaign, announced on Beautiful Bribie Island, is part of the $20 million Federal Government investment over the next two years in skin cancer awareness activities.

Cancer Council Australia is on board and have created new sun safe characters that follow in the footsteps of the renowned Sid from the Slip, Slop, Slap campaign of the 1980s.

Chances are you know or knew someone with blood cancer. It’s more common than people realise with over 50 Australian men, women and children diagnosed with a blood cancer every day. But there’s one group out there doing their bit to help those affected and their families – Leukaemia Support Queensland. A not-for-profit organisation and solely run by volunteers, LSQ has been in operation since 2006 and is dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemia’s, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood cancers.

President Jane McMillan is the driving force behind LSQ, a cause that’s very close to her heart and one she keeps fighting for.

“Leukaemia isn’t getting any better and it’s not going away,” Jane said. “If anything, more people are being diagnosed every day. We support them as best we can. If it means we have to fundraise harder, we will. If we have to do more events, we’ll do more events.

We just hope everyone supports us like they have in the past.”

“It doesn’t get any easier for anyone. To be honest, it doesn’t get any easier for us either. It’s hard when you see all these young people that are diagnosed and you think I’ve had a life, take me instead and let them live.”

Relying on the generosity from the community, the LSQ team work hard with fundraising events, raffles, dinners and more. They recently had a toy run with more than 200 toys collected and delivered to Caboolture and Redcliffe Hospitals.

“It was organised by Sliders and It’s a Wing Thing at Bite Markets,” Jane said. “They approached me and said they were doing a toy run and we were the beneficiaries.

It was an enormous success with quite a collection of toys. We even had the AFL Club on Bribie jump on board with Claire Uttley from Remax and they delivered a pile of toys as well.

The beneficiaries of those will be Caboolture and Redcliffe Hospitals and it’s not just for times like Christmas, it’s for throughout the year too because when kids come in and need an operation, they’re a bit frightened and a toy helps in those situations.”

Coming up in 2022, Bite Markets will come alive with a Rock and Roll night on Saturday February 12 ahead of Valentine’s Day. LSQ is on the hunt for a sponsor for the night. Shine Bright will also take place at Bite Markets in April. There will also be the Lose Your Locks campaign with Jane putting her hand up to shave her head.

“We have two victims, myself and Charlie, one of our longstanding volunteers and we’re hoping to raise $50,000 between us,” Jane said. “We’re looking for sponsors for that too. Charlie has long hair and a beard. If we get to $50,000, he will also let someone wax his chest.”

But one of the biggest things LSQ need is more volunteers and Jane would love to see new faces joining the group.

“It’s hard to get volunteers and we always need more,” she said. “I’d also really like to build up the youth group again. Most of them have grown up now so we need some younger members of the community to join us as well.”

With the motto “we are there because we care”, LSQ even put together care packages for anyone undergoing cancer treatment.

“The package has things like a blanket, a pair of socks, a heat pack, a thermometer and a flask for crushed ice,” Jane said.

“We have to thank Rotary for all the lip balm they gave us and North Harbour for the sunscreen and lots of other places for their contribution. Every new patient from now on will get one for their use and something to cheer them with a little note of hope and inspiration handwritten by one of our members.”

In exciting news for the region, a haematology centre will be opening in Caboolture by 2023 and is expected to be a part of the new satellite hospital.

For Jane and LSQ it has been a long time coming. Jane is also working hard behind the scenes for a consultant pathologist to be located in Caboolture or Redcliffe Hospital. This will mean patients could have quicker access to their test results.

“We don’t have the right facilities or a consultant pathologist here, that is what will make a difference,” Jane said. “We’re the biggest growing region in Australia and according to the 2016 Census, Moreton Bay encompasses 18.8% of Queensland’s population. So when you think that nine Queenslanders are being diagnosed every single day with leukaemia, say two of those are going to come from Moreton Bay Region, so why don’t we have the facilities here? Something has to be done!”

Sometimes I wish I had a recording for the information I regularly discuss with clients. Someone even suggested I do that – maybe.

Starting up new businesses in a new entity is a lot of initial work with all the registrations that are required. These include Tax File Number, ABN and possibly GST, registration as an employer, STP set up with the ATO, superannuation set up for employees and a choice of computer programme. And then there is the choice of entity in which the business will be established.

The list can be daunting at first, but once completed the only concern is getting the information into the computer correctly to enable all the reports and requisites to move forward smoothly.

This is where having a computer programme that allows me into your accounting package is so useful to you and allows me to adjust and show you where improvements can be made.

Unfortunately, in todays’ work environment, the responsibility for much more data information falls on client shoulders.

Monthly or quarterly, there is a BAS statement for GST, wages and income tax instalment. Monthly or quarterly employee wages information must be sent digitally to the ATO under the new STP reporting. For Annie Barnett and her family, October 10, 2021 is a date they won’t forget in a hurry. It’s the night Annie could have lost her life after an aneurysm ruptured in her brain. But there was even scarier news to come, during surgery doctors discovered another four aneurysms. Unbeknownst to them, a second aneurysm would soon burst and Annie would also experience a stroke.

A Life - changing Fight

Annie had worked that Sunday afternoon in the deli section of Burpengary Woolworths before heading home and having an early night after feeling tired. Little did she know what would unfold in the coming hours, let alone the days and weeks that would follow.

“I was terrified, it was pretty scary,”

Annie said of the experience. “I had thoughts of what is going on? This is not something you’d wish on anyone.”

“It was a very scary night,” her father Greg adds. “When you’re watching your child go through this, you just want everything to be okay.”

Finding out there’s five aneurysms in your brain would be hard for anyone to comprehend, but Annie is just 21 years old and in the midst of establishing a social media marketing business while working towards completing her university degree. Now that’s all on hold while Annie focuses on her health and recovery.

“I’m really proud of what I have achieved,” Annie said. “I’ve been in rehab and I’ve been working really hard so I’m proud of myself for being able to push through. A lot of people who have had a brain injury, they can’t walk or talk so I’m really happy that I’ve managed to get myself better.”

“I woke up in the middle of the night with the most splitting headache I’ve ever had, my head was pounding,” Annie said. “I actually had no feeling in my legs, I don’t know why but I couldn’t feel my legs. So, I crawled out to the hallway and yelled out to Matthew - my younger brother - to get mum and dad.”

Annie was taken to Caboolture Hospital by ambulance and waited for a number of hours before eventually receiving a scan which revealed bleeding in her brain. She was whisked off to hospital in Brisbane where doctors first tried a treatment which involved inserting a coil through the vein in her leg. When that failed they had no choice but to do surgery and remove a piece of her skull to relieve the pressure on her brain. She now has an impressive scar, but it doesn’t belie what she’s been through.

Annie’s parents Greg and Carol have been by their daughter’s side throughout the whole process, from the first aneurysm rupture, surgery, the second rupture and stroke, sitting by her bedside while she was in a coma and on a ventilator. Despite hearing they could very well lose their daughter, they never gave up hope.

“One minute I was a normal 21-year-old just going about everyday life, and next minute I’m having major surgery. You just never know.”

While she remembers the lead up to the aneurysm exploding, there is a lot Annie doesn’t remember given what she’s been through. But none of it has stopped this bubbly young lady from keeping her positive attitude and thinking of others. While she continues her own recovery, Annie is on a mission to create more awareness.

Time to get excited!

by Staff Writer Matt Owen Well, here it is folks! Time stops for no-one. The year is now 2022.

2022 certainly doesn’t look like what I thought it would when I was a kid (think ‘The Jetsons’) and never in my wildest dreams, did I see a pandemic (or is it now an endemic?) now two years in. If we can put aside the potential negatives related to COVID, the region has much to look forward to in 2022.

One likely change is the renaming and rebranding of our region from Moreton Bay to Moreton Bay City. Apparently, this is to maximise exposure from the 2032 Olympic Games and to get on a level pegging with other super-regions such as Logan City, Brisbane City, Gold Coast City and Ipswich City. According to Council there will be many benefits to come with this So this is one to watch.

Council expenditure for our local area includes significant infrastructure investments around walking trails and recreation areas, with $850,000 being set aside for the beautification of Brennan Park. Brennan Park is one of the most popular destinations on Bribie, offering the jetty, great swimming, fishing, picnic areas, playground, a stage, local markets, the seaside museum, with a variety of local businesses opposite. These works will only enhance this local destination once completed. This could well lead to other similar works in the future at Banksia Beach, Bellara and Woorim.

Beachmere is not forgotten with a $500,000 makeover proposed for Biggs Avenue expected to commence in early 2022. This project will include shared traffic zones, additional parking, reduced speed limits, increased planting, drainage upgrades and the addition of new street furniture.

We will see the Dolphins (expect that name to become the Moreton Bay City Dolphins if common sense prevails) head to pre-season training in November led by super-coach, Wayne Bennett. Who would have thought we would have an NRL team based out of Redcliffe. The long-term success of the Redcliffe Dolphins on the field, with the outstanding financial status of the leagues club, forced the hand of the NRL to provide them with the 17th NRL license. Exciting times ahead for rugby league lovers.

In addition to the NRL team, Moreton Bay can also look forward to the $22m ‘Queensland Centre of Excellence’ due for completion prior to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. These initiatives provide a pathway for the youth of Moreton Bay to reach a professional level in their chosen sport.

2022 and beyond, will see plenty of construction and beautification throughout Caboolture and Morayfield with works to be undertaken at Centenary Lakes and King Street, along with initiatives to improve traffic flow along Morayfield Road.

We can expect a start to construction of the Bribie Island and Caboolture Satellite Hospitals. While what these facilities include have been a reason for speculation, at a minimum they will provide relief for local residents that are currently travelling to receive certain treatments. Coupled with the recent upgrades and newly renovated Caboolture Hospital, and with after-hours medical services on the up, our community should be able to look forward to improved health care.

This article couldn’t be written without mentioning COVID. What will happen in 2022 with COVID? Could 2022 be the end of COVID? Firstly, is there such a thing as a positive to COVID? It has made many people look at life differently. A shift towards regional and seaside living, working from home, a push toward self-sustainability and regional tourism growth, have been some of the flow-on effects from COVID.

Bribie Island is one year closer to a new bridge (expect to hear more on this as we approach the 2024 State Election). 2021 has seen the completion of some significant roadworks along Bribie Island Road with further funding allocated for a variety of other road projects across the region.

Events in our local area will receive an extra funding allocation from the Moreton Bay Regional Council, bringing a welcome economic boost for our local business owners.

We will see a Federal Election, which may not excite everyone, however it is a chance to have your say. With plenty of work to be done for both major political parties, we could well see strong results for the minor parties, so who knows, maybe an exciting election!

A positive angle is that the latest variant, omicron, is most likely less dangerous (but more contagious) then the original variant and delta.

Perhaps the herd immunity coupled with high vaccination rates, and this less dangerous variant, will bring an end to COVID this year. Have you heard anyone talk about the end of

COVID? How about the possibility of a new vaccine that offers closer to 100% protection? Is this possible, if not, why not? Wrapping up on COVID, it appears as though the State Government has moved away from lockdowns. A shift towards employment mandates, masks, restricting freedoms that lead to the removal of some health services to the remaining 10% that choose not to be vaccinated to protect the 90% that are vaccinated and to avoid pressure on the already struggling health system. With this new approach (as opposed to lockdowns and flattening the curve) coming from the State Government and their health advisors we can only hope that the situation improves in 2022.

The Venus Flytrap Hi gardeners, Happy New Year to one and all! I know that we are all hoping for a much happier and healthier 2022. Let’s look at Nature - sometimes it has the answer to our problems!

REMEDIES With the cold and flu season approaching I thought I would look at good old Vitamin C, found in citrus fruit such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, mandarins and limes. Large doses of this Vitamin can decrease the severity and symptoms of a cold.

Nothing compares to a fresh juicy orange picked straight from your own tree. I love their glossy foliage and sweet-scented blossoms. Easy to grow so why not plant your favourite citrus

tree now and have your own supply of Vitamin C in your garden.

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

Pick your citrus ripe from the tree, as they will not ripen anymore after picking. When the fruit is heavy you are guaranteed plenty of juice. Pick your lemons with a short piece of stem attached and they will keep longer.

Borage and Comfrey soothe catarrh.

Camomile flowers help a head cold and stuffiness. Chillies can bring on a sweat and clear the head.

When repotting use a Cymbidium Orchid mix. You can also make up your own by using two parts composted pine bark to one-part coarse river sand.

Climbing Pitcher Plant I had these plants in store last year and they walked out the door – Nepenthes – Climbing Pitcher Plants.

I have had great feedback on these vines and thought I would give you some information on this fascinating plant. They form unusual and attractive pitchers on tendrils at the end of the leaf tips which attract, trap and digest insects. Nectar is secreted from glands located mainly under the lid which also has a pigmentation that attracts its prey. Once inside the inner waxy surface of the pitcher, the insects lose their footing and fall into the fluid below. They can’t climb out and drown, and are then digested by enzymes from the glands on the pitchers’ walls. Very similar to how we humans digest our food.

The lid on the pitcher is there to attract insects and to stop the pitcher filling up with water when it is raining heavily.

They produce upper and lower pitchers. The lower pitchers have tendrils

Pitcher Plants can be grown in greenhouses, under pergolas or verandah’s so long as there is bright, filtered light.

If no pitchers grow it is usually a sign that there is not enough light or the humidity is too low. They prefer a high humidity similar to the conditions that ferns and orchids enjoy.

When fertilizing you can use a slow-release indoor fertilizer or a liquid fertilizer with a high nitrogen content at a quarter strength e.g.

January is becoming known as MONSTER GT month and already this season a 50kg+ giant has been caught off Mooloolaba... They're out there! A dream fish for anyone who dares to pit themselves against these apex predators. NOW is the time to be throwing the big poppers for that trophy fish of a lifetime!

Nice little eating size Wahoo which aggressively chased down a big popper intended for a GT. system. This warm water has brought on some outstanding pelagic fishing across a variety of species. Marlin, Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi (Dolphinfish) and Spanish Mackerel being top of the list of target species for many who have made the most of the brief opportunities to get out.

While the Marlin haven't yet reached us in the numbers that were seen at Hervey Bay earlier in the season, there were still a few early arrivals to be caught locally before Christmas. With also some great reports coming through from the boats off Noosa, we can expect them to be on our doorstep in significant numbers very soon, if not right now!

The Wahoo are running red hot with the warm currents and hitting just about any lure they come across. From poppers and stick-baits to skirts and divers, they're feeding aggressively and hitting everything. Wahoo are a true pelagic species that never stop swimming and can often be an elusive target in that respect. Like all pelagics’, their feeding patterns are

heavily linked to the phase of the moon and the position of the moon in the sky throughout the day. In previous issues I've mentioned the four (4) daily lunar cues of the moon: - moon overhead, moon underfoot, moonrise and moonset as commonly being periods of increased pelagic activity, but this seems to be particularly true of Wahoo. Wahoo are certainly not boat shy and can be quite inquisitive of boats, often swimming quite close to inspect a boat at drift or anchor. When Wahoo are caught trolling, it is often the boat that gets their initial attention and draws them in for a closer look. As mentioned earlier, they're hitting almost any lure trolled or cast with the most successful method to specifically chase Wahoo being fast trolling skirted jet-heads. A skirted lure with a heavy metal head designed to be trolled at speeds of 18knots+. Jet-heads trolled at high speed on or near our local reefs, an hour surrounding any one of the four daily lunar cues, will give you the highest chance of success of boating one of these incredibly fast swimming fish.

One of the fastest fish in the ocean and prized as a sport fish, Wahoo are equally regarded for their eating qualities, with firm white flesh and a very clean flavour.

Wahoo will exert large amounts of energy very quickly once hooked, which raises their internal temperature quite high. If keeping a Wahoo for the table, it is crucial to immediately get their temperature lowered as fast as possible in a saltwater ice slurry.

The FAD's have been reliably holding good numbers of Dolphinfish. They're larger and wiser this year than we've seen in recent years and can often be quite timid and sitting low in the water column. When all else fails and it seems like they're just either not there or not eating, the trusty old pilchard on a set of gangs floated down through the water column near the FAD will often prove irresistible. A plotter with side-scan is a huge advantage when trying to locate them, as they often sit a small distance from the actual FAD. Like Wahoo, Dolphinfish will raise their internal temperature very quickly once hooked and need to be submerged in an ice slurry immediately. GPS marks for the FAD's can be found by Googling “qld fad gps marks” and looking for FAD 5, 17 and 6.

The humble Tinny is a very versatile fishing and boating rig, easy to launch and retrieve, quick to wash down, light to tow and cheap to run. So, to help you get the best out of your rig, here are a few ideas to secure items in your boat, such as oars, paddles, landing nets, gaffs, yabby pumps, etc.

Take your time fitting accessories and plan where you want everything to go.

Always use good quality marine-grade stainless steel screws and, to reduce electrolysis, use a jointing compound such as Duralac or similar wherever you drill holes. This is very important, especially on painted hulls to prevent paint blistering due to corrosion.

To start with, there’s a wide range of marine-style plastic clips to secure odds and ends, while fold-out drink can holders help to avoid spills or loose cans rolling around the bottom of the boat. Fitting rod holders to the bench seats will keep your prized fishing rods from being stepped on and broken. To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.
