Welcome to issue 71, our 2021 Christmas issue. In this issue I note the tragic and sudden death of our friend Andrew McGillivray, my condolences to his soul mate and wife Cathy McGillivray. This issue once more brings you a variety of articles and some great Christmas specials from our advertisers. Over the last six months the newspaper has gone from strength to strength with improved content focused on our local region and local issues. In achieving this we have been fortunate in having the guidance of Michael Thomas, a former professional writer, journalist and editor with over 40 years newspaper and magazine experience. Thank you so much, Michael, for your input and mentoring. The LOCAL news will be adding new staff writers to our editorial team in 2022. This means even more great news and features about our local community, written by locals, starting with articles in this issue by our first recruits, Sheree Hoddinett and Alistair Gray. Sheree brings a wealth of experience as a freelance feature writer as well as having been a journalist on regional newspapers, including the Sunshine Coast Daily. Alistair is well-known locally for his participation in Bribie Island Rotary club, and will be using his years of experience in business management and specialist subject writing to add in-depth insight into topics of local and regional interest. Our fishing feature has been expanded to two pages, with new contributors Roger Brown from Brisbane Boat Buyers and game fishing expert Albert Threadingham joining Anthony Cass (Pelagic Hunter) to bring you a whole range of fishing-related topics. Roger will be supplying you with handy tips to keep your boat and rig well maintained, while Toorbul-based Albert, a wellknown game fishing weighmaster and club identity, will keep you in the loop about competitions and game fishing in general in our local region. And there’s more to come in ‘22 as we strive to deliver local Moreton Bay region news and community activities to your doorstep, free and in an independent newspaper format that everyone can access! We are only able to do this with the support of our loyal local advertisers; the health and growth of our whole local and regional economy depends on them, so in turn we ask you to help them prosper by supporting them. And remember, you can purchase all your Christmas pressies locally! Enjoy spending your time this Christmas with family and friends and enjoy the start of 2022. Warm regards Belinda Ferguson

Normalising Covid outcomes I welcomed Bruce Taylor’s comment "Both countries are yet to 'normalise', but I would prefer to be in Australia than Sweden" in issue 70 regarding Covid outcomes. So how do we 'normalise' outcomes? Having recognised my own susceptibility to seasonal respiratory viruses in 2018, I optimised my nutrient intake of 39 essential nutrients to target 100% immunity support, data-tracked utilising the biometrics software Cronometer. I have since self-defended the three viruses (presenting one per year) ever since. My doctor applauds me for taking responsibility for my own outcomes. She says that if everyone in the susceptible category used a system such as this to improve outcomes then more people would become resistant to infection, as I am. I took this approach to reduce my reliance upon the public health system to practically zero. Nil concerns going forward. No need for any artificial injectable products. Resistance to infection must be maintained for continued effectiveness, whether vaccinated or not, as the current vaccines only offer +/- 1% Absolute Risk Reduction (ARR). We are yet to introduce an immunogenic harmless product here. Whether living in either country (Australia or Sweden) our outcome can be normalcy, regardless of limitations of the current product range. Frances Lilian Wellington, Bribie Island (retired ICPKP Kinesiologist)
Omicron Omicron, bring it on! Stop the hysteria! The researcher who discovered it has already confirmed that people with Omicron generally do not get sick, have not required hospitalisation and have not died from the virus. The researcher’s concern has been the media-generated panic. Omicron may well be the saviour of the day; if you get this form of Covid it may well be as good as the vaccination at stopping you getting any other form of Covid and would save both lives and the taxpayer the incredible cost of
mass vaccinations. So, let us be aware but not alarmed, and help with the research, not the panic. Pfizer has also restated its position that their existing pill will also combat the new variant. Which makes you wonder why the Queensland government is still threatening us with lockdowns, mandatory medical treatments, Covid apartheid and passports. Consider this: Deaths from/with Covid, approx 1,998 in 20 months; deaths from Influenza A in 12 months,10,000. Ten times as many deaths from the ‘flu every year for 15 years. No hysteria, no panic, no lockdowns, no political point scoring or loss of freedoms! Name and address supplied
Clean Water – Delivered! Re ‘Water Consumption Down – Charges Up!’, issue 70, if I drink 3 litres of water per day, I will consume about one kilolitre of water per year. If I divide my total water bill, including all service charges but disregarding any rebates for age and decrepitude, by the number of kilolitres used, the total cost per kilolitre is $5.16. Considering that thousands of children around the world every week die from drinking dirty water, to have a year’s supply of clean, parasite-free drinking water delivered to our kitchen for less than six bucks should have us dancing in the streets! We don’t have to fetch the water, so we’ve got time to dance. A year’s supply! Clean! Delivered! For less than six bucks! Bloody marvellous! Fred Gee, Elimbah Continued on page 41

Valé, Andrew McGillivray Say not in grief “he is no more”, but in thankfulness that he was. On Monday, 6th December, the Bribie Island community lost one of its most respected, colourful and beloved identities. Andrew McGillivray, personal trainer, fitness instructor and husband to our contributor Cathy, was killed in a road accident on Bribie Island Road. He was 61. Hundreds of older Bribie and surrounds residents have enjoyed their regular ‘Fit Beyond 50’ circuit training sessions under Andrew’s expert guidance for the past 11 years and will be shocked and saddened by his tragic death. His unbounded enthusiasm, patience, humour and unique fashion style ensured that what some of us might otherwise have considered an arduous regular
activity became not only beneficial to our health and fitness but also a thoroughly enjoyable social experience shared with an unforgettable Kiwi character. Our hearts go out to Cathy and their families at this difficult time. Harley-Davidson enthusiast Andrew’s ‘Last Ride’ will take place on Saturday, 18th December, leaving from their Bongaree home at 9.00am. He will ride on the back of his classic El Camino ute, escorted by motorbikes, and travel to the Great Northern Chapel, Tallowood Drive, Deception Bay, for a service at 10.30am. “Everyone is welcome to travel with us or meet at the chapel”, Cathy says, “But PLEASE WEAR THE LOUDEST BRIGHTEST COLOURS YOU OWN! You can even come in your undies!” -Michael Thomas
Bribie, Are We Ready? by Staff Writer Alistair Gray For the last 12 months, we’ve been living in a sleepy hollow, virtually protected from the rest of the world. The Queensland borders have been closed. The only influx of visitors we’ve seen locally have been mainly those from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast on weekends and public holidays, lockdowns permitting. It’s all very relaxed, and most of us live in our shorts and T-shirts all year round. Nothing phases us. There is little stress; everyone chills out and enjoys our incredible water vistas and island walks. Yes, it’s casual. Everyone is healthy and well. There is no virus here! In a few weeks, that’s about to change; the borders will open, and the Christmas holidays are upon us. Once again, Bribie will welcome a large influx of holiday visitors. Many from all over Australia and perhaps some from the rest of the world. Yes, the holiday season will be on us as we enter three months of madness. Great for the struggling local economy. But, are we ready for this? I’m not so sure. Our relaxed lifestyle and casual approach to life can be our biggest enemy as we re-open to the world. Have we forgotten to regularly hand sanitise? Do we, as a matter of course, allow that extra distance from others? Do we wear a mask when in crowded indoor areas? Do we check-in everywhere, or do we tend to forget to do that? Till now, border closures have protected us, but no more. Bribie / Beachmere has an 87.6% double vaccination rate, with first vaccinations over 95% (according to Australian Government - SA3 - Geographic Vaccination Rates 29 November 2021), well above the current
state average 76%. But, sadly, vaccination rates alone will not protect us, and in the new world, it will be personal responsibility and common sense that will ensure we are all safe. Despite all this, are our hospitality venues ready? Our licensed clubs and pubs have tended to set the benchmark for the area, with high standards set by the Bribie Island RSL and the Sandstone Point Hotel. The Bribie Hotel re-opens this week with new décor and menus, just in time for the holiday rush. Regrettably, when I look at our cafés and small restaurants, I’m not sure they are ready. But, with one notable exception, Café 191 at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, whose attention to detail, Covid management, cleanliness, food quality and service stand out. For others, I see tiredness. Some venues are plain grubby. Some menus are well past their use-by dates, many plain dirty, food-stained and with wrinkled pages. Tabletops are, in some cases, not fit to eat off. Floors are black and need pressure cleaning. Signage needs updating, and venues need modernising. Is this the welcome we want to give visitors to Bribie? Cafés and restaurants are very much in the food and hospitality business. As such, this means freshness, cleanliness, being Covid-safe, welcoming, friendliness, creating memories and being unique. For too long, we have accepted the status quo. Now is the time to lift our game. Stand back. Look at your business, whether in hospitality or retail, as if you were a customer visiting for the first time. What do you see? Is it fresh and inviting? Would you bring your friends here? Bribie, are you ready?
COVID – 19 At JNR Plumbing we are committed to the safety of our community and our at-risk elderly citizens of Bribie Island and Surrounds. Due to the risk of COVID -19 our plumbers and labourers will be fitted with masks when we enter your home, this is for your safety and the safety of the community and will minimise the risk of our team transmitting the virus from one home to another when caring for your plumbing needs. In the event of a blocked sewer or other high-risk tasks our team will be suited in disposable suits to again help stop the risk of spreading COVID-19. We ask that when we come to your home that you practice the government supported social distance of 1.5 meters at all time and to remain polite to our team as they are wearing protective clothing for your benefit and to keep our community safe. Hunting pigs for the New Year’s Eve Barbeque in the Top End
Excerpts from The Tiger Tea Club, by Harvey Fewings, published in 2013, ISBN:978-09871100-0-8, have been included in this article. Not much of a bloody year, was it? For our young people, for small business, especially hospitality, for our front line medical staff, doctors and nurses and for our senior Australians, it has been a particularly bloody dreadful year. But, it is nearly over, and the prospect of a New Year brings hope and confidence to us all. Therefore I thought it would be an excellent idea to lift our heads up from the swamp of daily politics, media-flaunting celebrities who have become upset over an ant looking at them and all the other dross that rocks along on the Bruce Highway eternal upgrade, and have a look at how some other Australians see the New Year’s arrival. In the Top End of Australia, this is one of the ways that it’s done: During the Top End Dry Season, wild pigs live around groundwater, or at least must have access to it, and that means, in most cases, wherever there is groundwater, there are pigs. The wild, razorback variety! In the Wet Season, which embraces the Christmas/New Year period, unless it is unusually dry, groundwater is everywhere and therefore, the pigs are spread over broad areas of the country. Finding them under these conditions can be difficult. Green Ant Creek runs into the Douglas/Daly River system; it comes off the high ground around Mount Shoobridge and drains South into the Douglas River. Large numbers of wild pigs live in this vicinity, and they can be found, with the right vehicle and good local knowledge, almost anytime. Heading East from the Tipperary Creek is Green Ant Creek, Harry and Billy nudged the Land Cruiser slowly through the low scrub for about an hour – their task was to kill two young wild boars for the New Year’s Eve Barbecue to be held at the Tiger Tea Club in a few days – it was Friday 28 December 1984. And it was hot, wet and sticky – a typical Wet Season day in the Top End. Harry and Billy dismounted from their Land Cruiser. In front of them was open wetland paperbark, spear grass, and water lilies dominated the landscape, shallow channels of freshwater wound through the paperbarks and the thick grass; either side of these channels showed much evidence of pig rooting. Harry and Billy hunted pigs on foot, without dogs. They preferred this because it brought a certain thrill to the business. And, if things go wrong, and they can very quickly - then it can be very thrilling indeed! Wild pigs, the razorback variety, are dangerous animals. They are fast, strong, aggressive and intelligent. They are universally disliked and respected by hunters and pastoralists. During the heat of the day, pigs usually lie up in shallow mud wallows along watercourses. A typical mob would be one or two old boars, two or three young boars, 15-20 sows and a number of piglets. The young boars were the targets. They are the best eating. A gentle breeze played softly across the open spaces of wetland. Harry and Billy moved downwind of a line of trees that indicated a watercourse and would probably conceal wallowing pigs. Harry carried an Australian Army .303 Jungle carbine; Billy’s weapon was a Winchester .44 magnum lever action carbine. Entering the shade, both men stopped and
dropped to one knee. They let their eyes adjust to the different light as they cautiously looked about. They also listened for the rustling, slopping, grunting noise pigs make as they loll about in the mud. They were also alert for the smell of pigs, which should waft towards them on the soft breeze. For five minutes, they waited. Cicadas thrummed the air about them while white corellas, the larrikins of the bush, screeched and cackled in the paperbarks. No pigs were heard. But they could smell them! Feral, ammonia laden, unmistakable. Pigs! Each man moved forward very slowly; they were about 5 metres apart. Their weapons were ready; the safety catches on. A clump of bushes and bloodwood trees about 45 metres ahead of them seemed the most likely place for the pigs – the breeze was blowing directly into their faces; it carried pigs with it. Placing their feet carefully, each time they moved the two men came to within 15 metres of the bloodwoods. Just as Harry was about to signal a halt, Billy hissed, ‘Pigs! Big mob – two o’clock, 20 metres, still relaxed.’ Harry turned cautiously, sinking to one knee; his weapon came to his shoulder; his thumb caressed the safety catch to “off.” Billy sank onto his haunches, 5 metres to Harry’s right, level with him. The Winchester came up, and he slowly tightened his grip on the lever-action, thus freeing the safety catch. They could hear the squealing and splashing – before they could move again, the pigs broke. A young boar, followed by two sows, exploded, pounding from left to right across the front of the hunters. Instinctively Harry placed the .303 sights on the boar’s left shoulder, he watched the shoulder blade working, the left leg threw forward in the running motion, the shoulder blade moved forward as well, enabling a clear lung shot. Not for long… just long enough. Harry’s sight tracked. Breathe in, hold, gently squeeze the trigger, and the boar fell dead! Heart and lungs shot. Simultaneously came the flat distinctive ‘boom’ of the Winchester. The leading sow leapt into the air, fell on her back and skidded to a halt not far from the boar. Both weapons were quickly reloaded and both men watched their front, looking for signs of the main body of pigs. They were in the spear grass about 40 metres away and heading away from the hunters. ‘ Harry,’ Billy said softly, ‘I reckon there might be an old boar still in there, mate.’ ‘I reckon you are right – this is a time when I wished we used dogs,’ whispered Harry. Billy made a splitting sign with his hands, Harry nodded. Safety catches off; they moved slowly, about 10 metres apart towards the bloodwoods that harboured an old boar…
they thought! ‘Bugger – look out!‘ yelled Billy. Grey with mud, complete with its cloud of midges and sandflies, the old boar struck. Red rimmed, porcine eyes filled with hatred, head lowered, the wicked tusks thrusting, the old boar simply flew towards Harry. A big bastard with badly ripped ears and face. Dog scars! He was about 2.5 metres long. Harry’s weapon was moving to his shoulder, he did not want to try a hipshot, but he was too slow, and the old boar was almost on him. Another flat boom! The boar’s neck jerked. Dust and blood misted – down went the ugly
head. A tusk furrowed into the soft earth slewing the dying pig’s head towards Billy, who stood, Winchester at his hip, grinning at Harry, who stood, .303 frozen at his shoulder, staring at the boar lying near his boots. Harry was white-faced as he looked at Billy. ‘ Thanks.’ He said very carefully and slowly. ‘ Its OK, mate. A bit close but OK. How are you?’ Billy kept grinning. ‘Ever had sparrows flying out of your bum?’ Harry whispered. Billy looked, saw nothing, ‘ Nah.‘ he said softly. And that pretty much sums up how pig hunting can be… dangerous and challenging. The cleaned carcasses stayed in a very cold chiller for a few days, then… On New Year’s Eve, the pigs were washed, stripped, and slowly rotated over bloodwood coals glowing in a half 200-litre drum. When cooked and basted in wild lime, the two carcasses were delicious; they fed about 25 to 30 members of The Tiger Tea Club, who saluted the shooters with icy cold Tiger Beer. None of the members or guests ever knew about the ‘sparrows.’ Nor should they.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.

•
Drop a Christmas card in a neighbour’s mailbox showing that you care and are looking out for them.
•
Mow your elderly neighbour’s front lawn or footpath to take a load of their shoulders. If you're already tending to your garden, why not lend a hand with theirs?
•
Keep an eye out on your neighbour’s home to make sure that everything appears to be in order.
•
Knock on their door and introduce yourself as a friendly face who's here to talk or help.

12 In a Parliamentary Democracy, functioning under the rule of law, such as Australia and its sovereign States, the business of politics is demanding, challenging, personal and ruthless. That’s the way it is and there is no room for pansies. Cranky Lizard has been looking at Australian politics for many years; has witnessed many acts of political stupidity, political cowardice, political compromise and rarely, political acts of courage and brilliance. This year, 2021, has been particularly challenging when observing and then commenting on Australian politics. It has been challenging because, despite the above comments about how tough the business is, and it is, there has been a demonstrated loss of dignity within the participants at State and Federal levels. For whatever the reasons, and they are both complex and simple, the dignity has gone. Just gone! The twenty-four-hour media cycle has contributed significantly to this loss of dignity – as the news media insists, in fact demands, doorstop one-liners reported on by wide-eyed, breathless young reporters on television screens announcing trivia as if it was the end of life on Earth. Politicians of all parties seem trapped in this news cycle; they have media advisors not much older than the neophytes who deliver the shock-horror headlines and with about as much life experience. Cranky Lizard speaks with elected politicians regularly; they complain about the insane demands of the media: Cranky Lizard points out that if you Feed the Beast in front of you, it will eventually consume you! There are politicians who successfully control the news cycle, and they do maintain their dignity. There are not many of them, but they stand out – The Honourable Peter Dutton is one of them. The Member for Longman, Terry Young is another. Then, of course, Cranky Lizard gazes with amusement at the phenomena that is now called ‘News Conference’ or ‘Press Release’. What little gems of 21st century culture they
Regular Comment
Issue 71 2021 - We're here for you!
When politics loses its dignity… have become? Before the ‘Pressers’ even start, it is axiomatic that there must be a media squadron of communication degrees in one room huddled together to determine what today’s ‘message’ shall be. Cranky Lizard asks you, can anyone think of any press frolic of recent times that was more absurd, spiteful and wrong than the Queensland Premier’s recent announcement that the Prime Minister of Australia wants the people of Queensland to be infected with COVID-19 for Christmas? Anyone? Where was the squadron of media drones when this little charmer slipped its leash and ran through the crowd like a mad titter? Did the Premier think about what she was saying – obviously not! Or maybe she did! Perhaps she thinks we are all so stupid that we would believe anything? She has reason to come to that conclusion. Cranky Lizard asks you to think about that! Cranky Lizard turns from the media frolics and earnest young reporters in firefighters’ suits to another matter which appears to be gripping the Federal Parliament. Gripping is the right word because, from media reports, the inhabitants of the Federal Parliament simply cannot keep their hands off each other! Drunken nighttime escapades, allegations of rape and abuse which are years old, accusations of physical abuse from another time, finger-pointing, sobbing, sad faces draped over television screens – but nothing proved! Nothing!
Illicit romantic affairs between employers and employees; it seems as if some madness overtakes any person who walks through the doors of that magnificent building. Cranky Lizard observes that after a day in the House of Representatives or the Senate, listening to the humming nonsense from someone from the Lonely Tractor Party or the brightly-coloured dopes from the, uuummm, left-wing, you probably would feel like a drink and a distraction or two, maybe three, even. But what happened to commonsense? Cranky Lizard wonders if any of them have ever heard of the iron rule of drunkenness and illicit affairs… Not Where You Work, and Not At Home. And these activities are not all male dominated, remember that. So what does all this mean? Cranky Lizard is convinced that all this posturing, frolicking and dashing about with their hair on fire is symptomatic of a total loss of dignity. They no longer care what you think. Look at the face, pictured in the print media of a party official, a President, who was asked to resign over an ‘issue’ with a woman. Bottom lip out, angry opaque eyes and a brat’s face: a beautiful example of entitlement denied. The picture says it all, “You can’t do this to me, I am the President, I am important.” Cranky Lizard tells them that they are not that important. They do not contribute very much to our life… they are mere specks on the face of the Earth. The wild nature of social media and its
associated empty intellectual spaces provide breeding grounds for personal vendettas, malicious personal attacks and opportunistic, populist bastardry. Cranky Lizard notes the populist politicians who have enthusiastically leapt onto the “anti-vaxx” and “freedom of your body rights” tumbrel and asks what have they achieved? What do they want with all this posturing and depiction of sad medical events on FaceBook? What do they want? Are they deluded enough to think that any Government can simply legislate a viral pandemic away? Cranky Lizard thinks not. So the only logical answer is that there is a populist grab for votes. How dignified is that? It seems to Cranky Lizard that these particular politicians have succumbed to the rule of the “mobocracy“ accurately portrayed on social media. But it is not all bad. The men and women elected to represent our interests in State and Federal Parliaments are generally committed to making life better for their communities. Cranky Lizard observes that for the most part, politics is a tough gig in a public place. There is no place to hide. And that is why dignity is so important. Cranky Lizard is highly critical of the media, both print and electronic versions; hyperbole, drama and personalities combined with identity politics have reduced the role of the media from an impartial observer and reporter on events to that of advocate for causes. And that is a pity. Cranky Lizard also notes that valid criticism could be levelled at all the comments Cranky Lizard makes as being biased. But a careful reading of the many articles now published will establish that all sides of the political spectrum have felt the eye of the Lizard. A New Year approaches; new challenges, new opportunities to enjoy in this marvellous country, Australia. Enjoy your days.

Need more Help?? 1. From Dec 17th some Queensland businesses, organisations or locations will require you to show your vaccination status upon entry. The two ways to do this are: A. Using the QLD Check in App. To do this you 1. Must have a myGov account and know your logon and password – from the website www.my.gov.au from a web browser
Problems with MyGov account, or linking My Gov to Medicare: You can get assistance from a Medicare (Centrelink) office. There is a Services Australia office at 9 Verdoni St, Bellara. It is staffed by volunteers Monday to Thursday 12pm to 3pm and Friday 8.30am to 11.30am. Note it will be closed from the 17th of December and reopens on the 4th of January. Centrelink in Caboolture (20-22 George St) is open Monday to Friday and closed on public holidays.
2. Must link the Medicare service to your myGov Account – using my.gov.au from a web browser
You can phone Medicare on 132 307
3. Then share your vaccination status from Medicare with the Check in App – Using the Express Plus Medicare App on your phone.
Problems with your sharing your certificate with the Check in App on your phone:
AND / OR
B. Providing a printed copy (not photo) of either your Covid-19 Digital certificate or your Immunisation History, likely with proof of identification - you can get a copy sent to you by ringing 1800 653 809 or print it from your my.gov.au account. It is recommended that you do have access to a printed version as phones can run out of battery and you may have issues with the App. Keep one in your wallet and one in your car. Also save your Digital Certificate onto your phone so if the Check in App is not working you have a copy – you can also access it within the Express Plus Medicare.
It’s a Dog’s (Happy) Life, Thanks to PAA...
… says Richard Lancaster
I visited Redcliffe’s Peninsula Animal Aid Refuge (PAA) on behalf of a friend, who lives on Bribie Island. She had recently lost one of her two dogs to old age and the remaining one, Jake, now seemed lost and forlorn without his mate. So I was on
a mission, on her behalf, to check out a suitable companion for Jake. Kennel Manager Marcia Thomson greeted me and on hearing of my friend’s situation consulted her log book. “Since Covid we have had fewer dogs come into the refuge. However we are now receiving dogs from as far away as Bundaberg, Warwick and Rockhampton. Oh yes, and we have filled quite a few adoption requests from Bribie!” said Marcia, a 20year veteran at the PAA. Marcia accompanied me as I moved around the facility and I was pleasantly surprised to find how clean and odourfree the refuge is. I found out subse-
Some of the 100 PAA volunteers, including Kennel Manager Marcia Thomson (holding ‘Petrie’) and Admin Manager Ann Carmichael (back row 2nd left), together with ‘Sybil’, the brown Kelpie selected by Richard for his friend.
You can get device assistance assistance from the Bribie Island Library. It is open Monday to Friday 8.30 to 6pm (7pm on Thursdays) and Saturday 9am to 2pm. Usually it is not as busy during the afternoon. It will be open until 12 noon on the 24th of December and closed on the public holidays, reopening on the 29th Dec. You can also use the computers, wifi and print at the library. You can also phone the Covid Hotline on 13 42 68 A private Facebook group, “QLD Check in App – Assistance”, has been created to provide assistance. You guys have all the fun ...
Oh, that’s a good one!
quently that this was due to the 100 or so volunteers, who work tirelessly on 4-hour rostered shifts, cleaning, washing bed linen, walking and feeding twice daily their resident much-loved dogs and cats. Marcia explained that to adopt a dog or a puppy, the cost is $350. Before adoption, all dogs are thoroughly vet-checked, de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated and heartworm tested, over $400 worth of value. Cats and kittens can be adopted as well, undergoing similar rigorous testing, and each adoption costs between $125 to $245. We were soon away to meet Jake’s possible new companion. The first was Walter, a black and white patched friendly fellow, who had just returned from his daily half hour walk with volunteer Graham. But he didn’t qualify, as my friend had indicated that she was uncertain as to how Jake would take to another male dog. Sadly the same fate befell Bruno, a handsome golden American staffie, who greeted us like we were old friends. We also met Blue and Bindi, a rock-solid pair who had happily lived together since their arrival from Bundaberg. “They would be heartbroken if we separated them” said Marcia. “I don’t think my friend could cope with another two dogs!” I replied. All seemed lost until we met Sybil. A delightfully playful brown
kelpie who seemed to fit Jake’s bill. “Sybil looks as though she could be a great companion for Jake. I’ll tell my friend about her and hopefully she will come and check Sybil out soon”, I said enthusiastically. Before leaving the refuge, I chatted with PAA’s Administration Manager, Anne Carmichael, who told me a little of the refuge’s history. Celebrating its 50th birthday this year, in 1971 a group of Redcliffe dog loving volunteers banded together and housed dogs abandoned on the peninsula by their Brisbane owners. In 1974 an animal-loving friend donated a house to be used as a refuge, and the PAA had a home. More recently, the family of the late Brian Burdett generously donated part of his estate to the PAA, enabling it to construct a new office block and dog quarantine facilities. “Every abandoned, lost or sick dog or cat deserves a second chance, even if it takes us years to find them a home!” says Anne. “A Jack Russell x Cattle dog holds the record for the longest stay here. He was here for 6 years, but we found him a home, where he eventually died, a happy dog, aged 18 years!” she concluded. If you’d like to know more, the Peninsula Animal Aid Refuge is located at 313 Duffield Road, Clontarf, phone 3284 1927, or visit their website, www.peninisulaanimalaid.com.au .

We would like to thank all of our local and surrounds community, along with those organizations which have supported us throughout the year, and look forward to your continued support in 2022. We are also a registered NDIS provider and have a long history of caring for people with disability on Bribie and surrounding areas. For those who have previously read about the services and supports we provide, we were able to open our first respite home in late 2020 in Banksia Beach. ported independent living on a permanent basis. We look forward to bringing you more information about this in early 2022. As always, we have had a jam-packed year of fun-filled activities and development with our guests in both our aged and disability center based programs. We have seen crazy sock Mondays, weekly exercise physiology, interactive music therapy and art with Koren for our aged guests. In October our NDIS guests performed a tribute “To our Farmers and The Bush” with a sellout audience. What a sensational night it was and one of which both our guests and our organization were very proud. They are on a well-earned three-day getaway of fun this month and planning for next year’s performance is well underway. A highlight for the year was our wonderful “Lady” Chris receiving a Longman Volunteer award presented by Terry Young MP. Chris goes above and beyond expectations and considers all our NDIS guests as her own family. Earlier this year we restructured our management team with David Hamon coming on board as the new manager for Bribie Respite and Support Services. David brings along a wealth of management experience and new ideas. On behalf of the management team, we wish all of our experienced-amazing staff and volunteers a well-deserved break over the festive season and thank them for their hard work, loyalty and support throughout 2021. To our fantastic guests who we see as extended family, we hope you have an amazing Christmas and we look forward to seeing you next year. We will be closed from Friday 24th December 2021 and re-open on Monday 10th January 2022. If you would like to know more about our supports and services, please contact us on 07 3408 2112.

A love that has stood the test of time
Busy Time for Bribie Island Probus Club The last quarter of the year has been a busy period for The Bribie Island Probus Club, with a major Brisbane tour and participation in several local activities. A lunch at Birches
By far the most significant of our club’s activities was a September trip to view GOMA’s exhibition of the European masterpieces on loan from the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, a once in a lifetime opportunity to appreciate pieces by the world’s greatest artists. We also took the opportunity of being in the city to view the eye-opening Cross River Rail Experience Centre in Elizabeth Street, a must for those interested in this mammoth project.
Mt Mee restaurant in July kicked off the quarter, followed by an August morning tea at the Community Arts Centre, a September TocH BBQ and a Special Morning Tea at the BIRV and a Probus Day picnic at Banksia Beach, both in October.
Our club also participated in Federal MP Terry Young’s EXPO held at Woorim Community Hall on Wednesday 17 November, which attracted almost sixty exhibitors. Many attendees showed interest in the social aspects of our club, which we hope will result in some new members. The highlight of the day occurred when our newsletter editor, Gloria Gordon, won the raffle drawn by Terry. Contact Gabrielle on 0407 341 074 for more details.
Steve and Gwendoline Warner today by Staff Writer Sheree Hoddinett For true love to stand the test of time, you often think of a fairytale or a story from a book. But there is one real love story out there that has had all the usual ups and downs of a relationship and they’re still going strong after 60 years of marriage. On December 9, 1961, Steve and Gwendoline Warner tied the knot and haven’t looked back since. It may not have been love at first sight when they crossed paths back in the early years of their lives, but this couple shows the true value of what everyone aspires to have in a happy marriage. Steve and Gwen first met when they were at school in Capalaba back in about 1953. They didn’t really know each
other or have much to do with each other until they reconnected in their teens. “When we came back together after school, I didn’t know that Gwenny had seen me on a tram in Queen Street one day,” Steve said. “She was with a mate and said, ‘I know that man.’ Her friend said ‘That’s Steve Warner and he comes to a club at the local church’, and Gwen said she was keen to go. So she organised it all and she came to say hello and it went from there.” Just a couple of years later they were married. At the time Steve’s mum was quite ill in hospital and Gwen wanted to ensure she didn’t miss out on being a part of it all.

the printing trade, family camping trips, fishing, boating misadventures and the times where they both had to help each other through injuries. “Steve had a tractor that ended up catching fire and he had second degree burns which required skin grafts,” Gwen says. “The year before that happened I cut the top of my right thumb off while removing grass from the mower. There was a lot involved in recovering from that but we did it together.”
Beautiful Living, Your Way!
They may have moved a few times over the years but Bongaree is now their home, having lived on the island now for the last nine years. It was a choice they made when it came time to downsize from their Beenleigh property and find somewhere to retire. Time with their family is still important to them to this day but Gwen believes what worked so well for them was organisation and knowing what the other person needed at the time. So, what is the secret to staying married so long?
The happy couple on their wedding day, 9 December 1961 “Steve’s mum was very sick,” Gwen said. “Because Mrs Warner was so ill, we decided to get married and after the service we went and saw her in the hospital. I’m the only daughter-in-law she met. She passed away a month later but I’m so glad we did that for her.” In the years that followed, they were blessed with one son and three daughters and their family has also extended to include seven grandchildren and also three great-granddaughters. Both Steve and Gwen speak fondly of their memories over the years, recounting stories of travelling the country for Steve’s job in
“We were married quite young,” Steve said. “It’s not a matter of sticking it out though, you either love a person or you don’t. If you have to stick it out you obviously don’t love them. “I love this lady, I adore her. It is give and take and recognition of the other person. You always try and put that person first.” “Other than love, it’s a game of give and take and compromise as well as working together,” Gwen adds. “While Steve was working many hours it was up to me to look after things at home as much as I could. I would even mow the lawns so he wouldn’t have to and if we wanted to go somewhere I was all organised with the kids. It was how we made it work.”

Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology 1-63 The Abbey Place, Caboolture | Phone: 07 5495 1652
There’ll be loads of fun activities on offer including Archery, Roman Legionary Training, excavating a Roman dig, creating a mosaic image and making an edible Roman road! Also, there are Roman games and crafts to explore and enjoy. Our programs are facilitated by experienced and knowledgeable instructors.
Beachmere turned out in style on the first Saturday of December to celebrate the festive season and get into that Christmas spirit, with the annual Christmas Bazaar and Community Carols once more proving a hugely successful event on the local calendar with “something for everyone”. This year the Viva La Musica Community Choir led the carols with students of Redcliffe’s ROAR Academy swelling their ranks. Soloists, young and old, stole the show and serenaded shoppers perusing the many art and craft stalls selling all manner of Christmas gifts.
The friendly folk at the museum offer a fun, hands-on and safe learning environment for children and these programs are best suited for children between 5 and 12 years of age. However, there will be activities available for little Romans, aged 3 – 5 years, with parental assistance.
Beachmere Classic Vehicle Club members turned up with some fantastic cars after cruising Beachmere streets all day delivering lollies to local children.
The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology is one of Moreton Bay Shire’s cultural gems, featuring a remarkable collection of artefacts from around the world that children can explore and discover while participating in a Museum Treasure Hunt.
The rock ‘n’ rolling Zephyr Project band played into the evening and only called it a night when lightning heralded an approaching storm.
Find out more by visiting their website: www.abbeymuseum.com.au , or phone: (07) 5495 1652.
Beachmere U3A sizzled sausages and the newly-established Community Garden Club proudly showed off the plans for their new garden.
Beachmere Area Network Group, who co-ordinate the annual event, said community events such as this rely on very dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to achieve a safe, happy and local event for all to enjoy. Merry Christmas Beachmere!

Bribie benefits from the “Resignation Rebellion”
by Staff Writer Alistair Gray
It’s all go at the new Palm Cove Development Stage 1 as building is about to commence We’ve all seen the major earthworks and frantic activity at the new Palm Cove Development along the edge of Sunderland Drive. Many will also have read the comments on the local Facebook pages expressing concern at the impacts a further 100 houses will have on the local infrastructure, roads, schools, and shops. I thought it was a good time to check out what was happening, and I met with Annette Mengel, Sales Manager, for the Pacific Harbour Waterfront and Golf Community Development. Annette, who herself is a long-term resident on Bribie, has been with the development since Day One and has worked with the developer, QM Properties for more than 33 years, provided some great insights. So much so, we will be following up with another story talking about the environmental achievements and gains made during the life of the Pacific Harbour Development.
Mengel said that Bribie Island has been forgotten and bypassed for so long by many. But now, with the significant changes in our work culture, and the demand by professionals and other workers to work from home and maybe go to the office one or two days a week, Bribie Island had has come into its own. Being only about an hour away from the Brisbane CBD or the Sunshine Coast, professionals who would previously have shunned Bribie Island because of the travel times are now with the new work dynamics and technology able to get the best of both worlds. They can serve their customers and at the same time enjoy a much more relaxed lifestyle, more family time, and less stress. Many professionals are rebelling against old-school management styles, the dictating of terms, long hours, poor pay, being taken advantage of, and poor management. Instead, they are voting with their
feet, and with other workers are taking more control over their lives and how they work and live. The great "Resignation Rebellion” is on as workers set their terms and move to more affordable, lifestyle-friendly regional areas.
homes tightens. Mengel mentioned that once the Palm Cove development was complete, the only land left in the Pacific Harbour Development was a few blocks in the Goodenia Heads development when QM Properties make them available.
All this is excellent news for Bribie Island. Almost sold out, the Palm Cove development has only a handful of building sites left in Stage 2. The roading and footpaths are down in Stage 1 and are fast nearing completion in Stage 2. The development will be complete and filled with luxury homes by year-end; next year for local tradies, this means heaps of work over the next year or so. In addition, many of the new homeowners are work from home professionals. All this brings new life to Bribie, new opportunities as the new Islanders add value to the local economy. To say nothing of the growth in property prices as the market revalues and the supply of new
When granting original development approvals, the Moreton Bay Council saw the opportunities the development presented to the overall community. While there will be transitional challenges as the community adjusts to the needs of a more extensive population base, particularly with local traffic flows and schooling, the positive impacts of encouraging new and younger people to the Island will well outweigh many of the short-term disadvantages. As the challenges unfold, the Council and the Queensland Government will need to adjust priorities and align with the community's needs.

“Elf” Comes to Bribie Island by Staff Writer Alistair Gray Bribie Island families were out in force to enjoy the kid’s movie “Elf”.
Issue 71 2021 - We're here for you!
New Free Online eSafety Course for Seniors
The Federal government agency eSafety has helped more than a million older Australians learn new online skills to help them safely do everything from paying the bills and doing their banking, to shopping for groceries and video-calling the grandkids. The latest course, Advanced Online Security, was launched last month to help them be even safer online. Offered as part of the Be Connected program, it gives guidance on better managing passwords, using antivirus software, protecting private information and more. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said older Australians see the challenges – and the benefits - of being able to conduct more of their lives online. “The concerns of older Australians are clear, with our research showing over 70% are worried about their devices being hacked,” she said. “Over 40% want to improve their skills in adjusting privacy settings.” “Many have told us they want to take their online safety and security skills to the next level. eSafety is bringing its specialist knowledge in this area to meet the demand. “This course is an opportunity for older Australians to delve more deeply into ways to stay secure online. It provides a good understanding of the benefits of using password managers, how antivirus software works, using VPNs to protect privacy and more.” The free course is now available on the Be Connected website, www.beconnected. esafety.gov.au/topic-library/advanced-online-security . The extent to which Be Connected is meeting the needs of older Australians is clear, with the program consistently obtaining a 93% satisfaction rate for the interactive content. Be Connected is a joint initiative between the Department of Social Services, the eSafety Commissioner and Good Things Foundation.
Wow! What a great night. There was an air of excitement as about 500 people gathered at Brennan Park in Bongaree for an outdoor screening of the classic 2003 movie Elf. The deck chairs were out, families, friends and heaps of kids sitting on rugs, enjoying their picnics, eating fairy floss, or munching on a Rotary sausage. It was one of those perfect Bribie evenings, with no breeze, a setting sun, and families just relaxing and enjoying themselves. The Park started coming alive at about 4 pm with heaps of entertainment before the movie started at 7 pm. There were giant outdoor games set up, with hands-on environmental education activities delivered by Ocean Life Education - a big hit with many of the kids. Also, many local artists played music continuously. Everyone enjoyed the music, particularly the many senior citizens who also wandered down to see what was happening and stayed to enjoy the fun and movie. All enjoyed a great evening. A big thanks to the Moreton Bay Regional Council, Division 1 Councillor, Brooke Savige, and Council’s Special Event team for putting on such an enormously successful evening. Here’s hoping the Council will repeat this in the New Year.
To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate. Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project. If you and your friends wish to sign this petition, cut it out, complete and post to The LOCAL News, Island and surrounds, PO Box 1019, Bongaree QLD 4507. Alternatively the completed form can be scanned and emailed as a pdf or image file to belinda@islandandsurrounds.com.au

2021, What a Year!
Australia. With Queensland staying relatively open throughout the year, many businesses had the opportunity to rebuild and extend their trades. However, those based within the tourist industry continued to suffer the impacts of closed borders. And whilst our sports sector managed to escape relatively unscathed this year, much of our arts and music industry is still struggling as a result of capped capacities and a lack of funding. Many local musicians, artists and actors did not get the opportunity to display their talents this year. Here’s hoping 2022 will return the many prospects that 2021 did not.
And just like that, another year draws to an end. As we rapidly approach the last day of 2021, we reflect back on the craziness that this year entailed. From sporting triumphs to unexpected earthquakes to space expeditions, 2021 brought with it some very unexpected surprises. We were in lockdown. And then out of it. And then back in it. Borders were shut and then opened, and many Queenslanders, and Australians in general, spent significant periods of times in different states or countries, unable to return home. However, Queensland was lucky in escaping bourne even took out the title of the Longest Lockdowns collectively in the world. Towards the middle of the year international borders began to open, and the United Nations declared 2021 the Year of Peace and Trust. Many events that had previously been cancelled took place this year, including renowned singing competition Eurovision. And of course, we cannot forget the summer Olympics, and Paralympics, held in Tokyo. Australian athletes undertook vigorous training, many Covid tests and self-isolation to represent our nation on the world stage. Performing to the world, from an empty stadium they did our country extremely proud bringing home forty-six medals in total. Speaking of sporting achievements, Ash Barty also made Australian history as she won her first Wimbledon Ladies Singles ti-

tle. AFL and NRL competitions forged ahead, despite the many interruptions and relocations. And in a bit of a sore spot for us Queenslanders, we did unfortunately lose State of Origin. Sports were not the only big events of this year; international meetings and discussions began to shift focus to also readdress international concerns

that had previously been placed on hold due to the pandemic. Top of that list was Climate Change, with major conferences such as COP26 being held in Glasgow. This year also posed both a challenge and opportunity for businesses, especially small businesses, around
2021 has been a mix of triumphs and tragedies, as a nation, as a community and as individuals. As we approach the end of another year, which has seemingly flown by, it is important to remember to continue to be kind and reflect on your year. We have yet again shown that in the face of fear and uncertainty we can band together. This year, as a nation, we’ve supported local businesses, many students have participated in online and home schooling and we’ve kept up to date on the latest mask restrictions. But most importantly, we’ve made it to the end of the year. Wishing everyone a lovely holiday season and a Happy New Year. We’ll see you all in 2022

Congratulations to the Latest Heartbeats Certificate Winners! By Cathy McGillivray More Heartbeats attendance certificates and free class cards were handed out in November, with Maureen Drummond receiving her 200th class certificate and Nisha Robinson reaching her 100th class to receive her certificate and Heartbeats t-shirt! Both these wonderful ladies have participated in Heartbeats for several years and of course would have reached these amazing attendance milestones much earlier if it wasn’t for the lockdowns over the past couple of years. Also, last month the note under Adele Carr’s photo was incorrect with Adele actually having achieved her 600th class, not 300th as the photo stated.
Nisha Robinson received her 100th class certificate
With Heartbeats participants from throughout the Bribie and surrounds community, we are all very grateful that the Churches of Christ village allow us to use their lovely clubrooms and have been so supportive towards these exercise classes since they started in 2012.

CAROLYN’S TAX UPDATE
CM WHEELER & ASSOC, ACCOUNTANTS AND TAX AGENTS WOODFORD AND BRIBIE Your Local Accountants with 20+ years of experience. Sometimes I wish I had a recording for the information I regularly discuss with clients. Someone even suggested I do that – maybe. Starting up new businesses in a new entity is a lot of initial work with all the registrations that are required. These include Tax File Number, ABN and possibly GST, registration as an employer, STP set up with the ATO, superannuation set up for employees and a choice of computer programme. And then there is the choice of entity in which the business will be established. The list can be daunting at first, but once completed the only concern is getting the information into the computer correctly to enable all the reports and requisites to move forward smoothly. This is where having a computer programme that allows me into your accounting package is so useful to you and allows me to adjust and show you where improvements can be made. Unfortunately, in todays’ work environment, the responsibility for much more data information falls on client shoulders. Monthly or quarterly, there is a BAS statement for GST, wages and income tax instalment. Monthly or quarterly employee wages information must be sent digitally to the ATO under the new STP reporting. Super data and payments of same are generally quarterly reporting and can be made via the ATO or directly to the chosen superfund. My office is entirely up to date on all these areas, and I am more than happy to help
you get your business going and assist in the everyday running and preparation of the reporting. For some clients, they have thrown their hands up and left me to do all but the actual data entry of the bank accounts. It is important to get everything correct and balanced else you will have the ATO or employees complaining. At the end of the year all the different facets within your business must balance with each other. Let us know if we can assist you with any matters of concern. Regards Carolyn, FCPA

GARDEN WITH
Jill Ross from Mitre 10 Bribie Island. (Meet Jill on the floor at Mitre 10) Jill is a horticulturist and has an Associate Diploma in Horticulture and has worked in the horticulture industry at various nurseries round the greater Brisbane area for 30yrs.
WATER LILY PLANTING For best results, water lilies are to be planted directly into gravel in the bottom of the pond. Use 25mm of fertilised soil or cow manure, then cover with 75mm of very fine plasterers’ sand, which is then compacted down so the soil or manure cannot escape. Don’t use coarse sand. Plant the water lily corm in the compacted area then add 50mm of coarse sand or gravel around the corm, covering with the rest of the fine plasterers’ sand. When the water lily is bought in a pot, transfer to a cut-down plastic rubbish bin or use a large black pot. Cover the drain holes with sand or gravel. Layer the pot as described above.
GARDEN OR ART?
WATER GARDENING If you want to create a natural habitat alive with plants and animals, then include a pond. Visiting birds, fish, frogs and other animals will come to visit and drink from your pond.
BUILDING A POND There are many forms but two of the easier ones are Tub and PVC Liner Ponds.
•
75mm of compacted fine sand
•
Place water lily on top and wedge into place with coarse sand or gravel
Liner ponds don’t have to be boring! Tub garden: Use a large container such as a ceramic pot, wash tub or old barrel. A liner will be required for watertightness. If using a terracotta pot there is a great product called Knead It, which will fill the hole in the bottom of the terracotta pot, and also use a pot sealer. Just follow the directions and you will create a lovely bit of nature in your surroundings. PVC Liner pond : This a cheap and easy form of construction, using a synthetic rubber or pvc liner. You can create any shape, size or depth of the pond. By adding rocks and gravel you are creating a nice natural look to your garden. The location of these ponds is very important. A sunny position is required for water lilies to flower. Think about the wind and whether there are any deciduous trees or shrubs nearby. Water lilies do not like being near moving water, like a waterfall. The pond’s depth should be at least 400mm with shallow and deep spots to accommodate the smaller and larger aquatic plants.
A typical tub garden
25mm of fertilised soil or cow manure
You should repot your water lilies every year in late Winter or early Spring. If they are planted directly into your pond, you can make a parcel with a Chux towel, adding slow release fertiliser with a high nitrogen content, wrap, then push it into the gravel a few centimetres away from the corm and cover with gravel. Fertilising should be done in Spring and Summer. No further fertilising is required as the water lilies cease growing in the cooler months.
Hi, and Welcome, as we bid Farewell to another year. It’s gone so quickly; or is it that I’m just getting older, and Time, like a jet plane, moves too fast? I’ve recently been watching Monty Don on tv, where he posed the question: ‘Garden or Art?’. He has been visiting France and the other night he was at Monet’s garden, and then went to see Monet’s painting of his waterlily pond. A few customers of late have asked about Water Plants, and whether I have them in stock. Unfortunately, I don’t carry them, but do get Water Lilly Corms when in season. I also have a Vietnamese Spinach called Kang Kong which grows well in water. I also discovered Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife Josephine’s love of Australian plants, and her deep love of Botany. If you Google ‘A Distant Affair’, a fact sheet on the Gardening Australia website by Jane Edmanson, you will discover Josephine’s love of all that we hold dear to our hearts, our garden.

Once the pond has been constructed and stocked with plants and fish you will
notice the pond turning green. This is algae, a condition that is both inevitable and natural. So how do we handle this problem? This is a bit of a balancing act but is achievable. For each square metre of surface area, you should have two bunches of oxygenating grasses, one medium-to-large water lily and two fish (like Pacific Blue eyes – they eat mosquito larvae - or Mountain Minnows). Once these plants are established the water will clear. Also, removing any bottom waste once a month will stop the pond from going stagnant. Now sit back and enjoy your achievement.
Continuing the French theme, I wish you and yours Joyeux Noel and bid you au revoir until next year.

Tight Lines
November Report
in such a way that they briefly pop above the water to “breathe” every 5 – 8 seconds to ensure a consistent bubble trail and maximum action from the lure. What to look for? The obvious signs of life such as bait on the sounder and birds patrolling the area are certainly good signs, along with presence of dolphins and cleanliness of the water; dirty green water is no good, clean cobalt blue/purple water is a good sign. Identifying and following current lines is also a great technique that
Rain, rain, go away! Not likely. With a La Niña weather cycle in full swing, conditions offshore have been “unstable” to say the least. That being said, the warmer than average currents associated with a La Niña event have brought a good start to the pelagic season. The local reefs have seen a healthy biomass of various small Tuna species move in with many larger predators hot on their heals. The major influencing factor on our offshore fishery lately has been the development of a La Niña phase of the El Niño– Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During a La Niña, the eastern Pacific Ocean experiences cooler than average sea temperatures, while the western Pacific (the Australian east coast) sees warmer than average sea temperatures. This warmer water coupled with stronger than average trade winds increases convection and the formation of clouds which is why we see higher than average rain falls and increased cyclone activity during a La Niña cycle. This is the 2nd year in a row a La Niña has developed. With the ground in many places already saturated from last year’s La Niña, any rain that this year's brings with it has nowhere to go. We can expect the rain to keep coming over the summer and flood events are likely. The last time we were hit with two consecutive La Niña phases was during the 2011 floods.
Father and son duo, Keli and Jhiel Pepene, getting it done with some good-sized Dolphin Fish produces fish.
How La Niña affects our weather See: www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/history/ln-2010-12/three-phases-of-ENSO.shtml
Summer in SEQ for many offshore anglers means one thing... Marlin! So far this year, despite the weather giving us very limited opportunities to get out and target these prized sport fish, it's shaping up to be another great year. Hervey Bay, now renowned for the accessibility it grants to the annual migration of baby Black Marlin, had an incredible run this year and now it's our turn! They're here right now. While they can be caught anywhere wide of Cape Moreton, 5Nm north of Moreton Island, known simply as the trench, is the best place to start looking. If there's bait or
The smaller Spotted and School Mackerel have turned up right on cue in excellent numbers and can be found throughout the bay. Spotties and Schoolies are a lot of fun on light gear, but if targeting them remember they don't freeze anywhere near as well as their Spanish cousins and must be eaten fresh, so take only what you need for a feed and leave the rest.

The trench is quite a large area, easily identified on a chart and is really just a steep drop-off that extends for many miles, creating a wall, it's not really a “trench” as such. Marlin can be caught at the trench using a variety of techniques including live baiting, trolling and even topwater casting. Trolling is the most successful. Troll a spread of 4 or more small skirted lures, no bigger than 8”, at varying distances from the boat, at a speed of 6 - 8 knots. Lures should be set
The warmer than average currents associated with a La Niña cycle have reached us and the water has warmed up significantly to around the 25°C mark, which isn't usually seen until late December. This early onset of warm current has brought with it an early start to the summer Spanish Mackerel run. It seems as if the big Winter Spano's only just left us and now the Summer fish are here. A smaller class of fish than the Wintery's, the summer Spanish are the perfect eating size, with the larger ones going not much bigger than 10kg. The summer run doesn't usually have the incredible numbers that we see at the peak of the Winter run but they are more dispersed along the entire reef system and can be much easier to catch. They'll hit a bait or a trolled lure more readily than the bigger winter fish which often makes them a welcome by-catch at this time of year when chasing other species.
There have been reports that our local FAD's have been holding good sized Dolphin Fish and with the currents as warm as they are I would expect the Wahoo to fire up soon too! Tight lines, folks! Pelagic Hunter

Don’t Neglect Your Boat Trailer!
0.23 2.73 MO 1651 0.43 2213 1.87
Let’s talk about boat trailers – so often the neglected part of many boating rigs. •
•
•
•
First off, while the trailer is on the ground, give the wheels a good shake and look for any movement, loosen and re-tighten the wheel nuts one at a time to make sure they are not seized. Next, jack the trailer up and spin the wheels. If they spin smoothly and quietly - all good, but if you hear any grumbling bearing noises it’s time for new bearings; a seized wheel nut or faulty bearing in your garage may be a nuisance, but on the side of the road it could be a very expensive tow truck journey. Always carry a spare wheel, as well as a suitable wheel brace and jack as the one supplied with your car may not fit your trailer. Check your tyre pressures - a semi-deflated tyre will build up a lot of heat and may cause a blowout.
•
Check all your trailer lights are in good working order.
•
Put a little grease on your trailer coupling.
•
Check your winch wire cable or strap for any signs of wear and tear. Always stand to the side of the winch when putting the boat on the trailer - if the winch cable snaps and flies back it could result in serious injury.
•
0.24 2.74 TU 1742 0.43 2304 1.87
Check your tie downs and safety chains on boat and trailer.
Also, fitting your trailer with a motor support bracket is always a good idea; it saves damage to the transom of your boat and the engine mounts on your outboard from road shock by allowing the load to be taken by the trailer. With a bit of basic maintenance your next trip should be a happy and safe one. Merry Christmas, and Safe Boating!

Ever Thought of Game Fishing? Contributed by Albert and Pauline Threadingham ‘Game Fishing’ conjures up a lot of exciting things, especially when your mind says, “Let’s have a go at this!”, so let’s have a look at what size you want to “have a go “at. Fancy Big Game Fishing? The very thought provokes the notion that you are attached to a monster fish, Swordfish, Marlin and Tuna, where you can spend a long time in the Game Fishing Gear and in a Chair where you can always get heaps of advice and instructions which you have never heard before, and using the boat’s gear that you think is normally used for erecting power poles. Or you can have a go at Game Fishing, not that much removed from the Big Game category, but a lot more achievable in a smaller boat, using Mid to Light game gear and going for a chance to still get the bigger fish. But, more likely with this gear, to catch really hard-fighting fish and more species to try for - Marlin, Sailfish, Spearfish and game fish such as Tuna, Trevally, Barracuda, Mahimahi, Mackerel and Wahoo. You can also have a go at Sportfishing and spend some time with crews who specialise in Trevally, Barracuda, Mackerel, Tailor, Flathead Whiting, Bream and Jewfish. When you get to experience a bit more of this you’ll see that some can be done from shore or beach pier or estuary, which gives you a wider range of choices and where you can include family - not to say family can’t be involved with all of the above, and generally is. If you have a good knowledge of what you want to do in fishing there are heaps of options, and just as many boat shops, ready to show you their wares. We’d recommend you keep it local and go first to Brisbane Marine where you will be looked after. I guess they will fit the towbar to hitch up your new fishing machine, and that will make you more adventurous as there are great launching ramps from one end to the other; that’s why we’ve listed the clubs below.
Hopefully you’ll become involved with a club specialising in looking after the Interests of a wide selection of game fishing activities. In our fish-rich area we have every kind of Game Fishing Club, with activities covering all the above, and more, and offering new members the opportunity of joining in on Fishing Trips. This will give you a very good insight into what they do and you can decide what direction you want to take from there to suit your family situation. We say ‘family’, as there are sections of point-scoring (did we mention competitiveness?) There’s an old saying: ”Families that Fish together - Stick Together!”. Clubs from the border up to here and beyond are: GOLD COAST GFC, MORETON BAY GFC, BRIBIE ISLAND GFC, REDCLIFFE PENINSULAR GAME AND SPORTFISHING CLUB, NEWPORT GFC, MOOLOOLABA GFC, SUNSHINE COAST GFC and HERVEY BAY GFC. Please excuse us if we’ve missed any. There are Freshwater Fish that are included in separate section and that can have you travelling long distances as well. But just let’s say you want to be in a nearby club or you just want to fish locally; there are several great species of fish to target your attention to. Right now we will see an increase in Black Marlin up to about 30kg building up (they’re in Hervey Bay now) and Sailfish (a bit late this year) will increase in numbers too. If you go a bit wider, over 80metres in depth you could hook-up with a couple of Blue Marlin or a Striped Marlin as was the case recently, when the inshore areas did not produce Black Marlin as was expected, because the strikes were “soft” with no solid hook-ups. The Game Fishing Calendar in this area of Queensland runs in the warmer months with warmer water temperatures. except in the cooler months when the Snapper, Jewfish, Tailor, Bream, Whiting and Trevally make their appearances that make Family Fishing very Exciting as well !! Pauline and I love what we do and are always willing to help with information where we can.

This holiday - stay safe when towing!
With the summer holiday season well and truly here, caravans and other forms of trailer will be on the roads in increasing numbers for the next couple of months, many of them towed by drivers who are new or inexperienced in towing. The Qld Department of Transport & Main Roads offers this useful guidance on what drivers should be aware of to help make their journeys as safe and free of stress as possible. Towing a trailer requires additional driving skills and safety precautions. The trailer may be a caravan or camper trailer, boat trailer, horse float or special-purpose trailer. The driver of the vehicle is legally responsible for being safe when towing a trailer, and ensuring the towing vehicle, trailer and couplings meet the minimum standards. They will also find the drive more enjoyable if the combination is well designed and set up. Using a suitable vehicle Safe towing starts with ensuring the tow vehicle is suitable to tow the trailer. You can select the right trailer or caravan to match your tow vehicle, or buy a tow vehicle to suit your trailer type and towing needs. While modern vehicles are lighter and provide better service for normal motoring, some don’t have the necessary characteristics for towing. The owner manual usually indicates the maximum weight and other trailer features that are appropriate for the vehicle. You should not exceed these limits. Towing will affect your vehicle in several ways, including: • decreased acceleration and braking performance • reduced vehicle control and manoeuvrability • increased fuel consumption. Therefore, when assessing the load, consider the weight of the tow vehicle and trailer, including: • the number of passengers you intend to carry • the equipment in the tow vehicle, such as tools and camping gear • modifications to the tow vehicle, such as bull bars, long-range fuel tanks, supplementary batteries and roof racks • the load on the trailer or caravan: a on a caravan – may include water tanks, gas bottles, food and drink, clothing, toys a on a boat trailer – may include fishing gear, safety equipment, motor and fuel a on a horse float – may include the weight of the horses, tackle and food. If the vehicle was manufactured before
1 January 1992 and the manufacturer hasn’t specified a maximum towing capacity, use these towing capacities as a guide: • 1.5 times the unloaded mass of the vehicle - if the trailer is fitted with appropriate brakes • a maximum of 750kg - if the trailer isn’t fitted with brakes. If you’re unsure about the mass of the trailer and load, have it weighed at a public weighbridge. If necessary, the manufacturer, the dealer or a specialist in towing equipment may fit special suspension or transmission options, or load-distributing devices, to the tow vehicle. Legal requirements • The vehicle and trailer must be roadworthy and registered. • The trailer must have a rear number plate • Towbars and couplings must not cover the towing vehicle’s number plate or rear lights when the trailer is not connected. • You may tow only 1 trailer (caravan, box or boat) at a time. • People must not ride in trailers/ caravans. While driving When towing a trailer (including caravans), remember to: • allow for the extra length and width of the trailer when entering traffic • allow for its tendency to ‘cut in’ on corners and curves • accelerate, brake and steer smoothly and gently to avoid swaying • allow for the effects of cross-winds, passing traffic and uneven road surfaces • leave a longer stopping distance between you and the vehicle ahead; increase the gap for longer, heavier trailers and allow even more distance in poor driving conditions • use a lower gear in both manual and automatic vehicles when travelling downhill to make your car easier to control and reduce the strain on your brakes • allow more time and distance to overtake and avoid ‘cutting off’ the vehicle you are overtaking when returning to the left lane • get someone to watch the rear of the trailer when you reverse—reversing is difficult and takes practice • not hold up traffic—pull off the road where it is safe to do so, and where it won’t create a build-up of traffic unable to overtake • be aware that your vehicle and trailer will have a tendency to sway when a heavy vehicle overtakes you.

Ocean Levels
Cranky Lizard’s response
Australia’s coal industry (Editor’s note: Parts of this letter have been edited due to space limitations) Dear Mr Lizard, I always read and enjoy your page in the Local. A good rant and rave is a healthy practice in a democracy. I would like to offer a different opinion as to the future of Australia’s coal industry (Issue #70). This industry will continue and thrive over the next decades until new technology provides alternative efficient sources of clean energy. Improvements to existing coal using methods of generation are being introduced but such are never fully reported in other than tech journals. If you seek a common sense approach based on facts and cost benefit analysis I suggest following Copenhagen-based Bjorn Lomborg on the internet. Nuclear power is a current and potential source for electricity generation, and new technology is making this more economical. Safety of such a source is distorted and blown out of all proportion by vested interests. I wonder how many people appreciate that all the ‘Nuclear’ bit of the plant produces is Steam. Then, like any other generation method, the steam drives the turbines; same as it’s done for well over a century. Money for coal mining is still abundant. All the locally based financial institutions ….whose directors misguidedly follow the ideas of climate catastrophe, are having no effect on coal exports. Well that’s my controlled rant on the subject. David Horrocks, Bribie Island

Dear Mr Horrocks. Thanks for responding to my comments. You make some interesting points, and I agree with them. Cranky Lizard has long followed Bjorn Lomberg’s research. Lizards are vitally interested in the future of the Earth; having been here longer than most other species, we have a proprietorial claim to native title. Your comments are refreshing and sound. Thank You. Cranky Lizard
Jumping off Bribie Bridge Seeing the front cover of issue #70, “A rite of Passage, Bribie-style”, reminds me of a trip to Wellington NZ. There, along the waterfront promenade near the city centre, they have a purpose-built steel structure with a ladder and two jumping platforms (low and high) from which locals and visitors alike can jump into the water. As much fun as it is to participate, it’s equally fun to watch. Why don’t we do that here? It’s something kids visiting with their families on holidays from Brisbane and other surrounding areas will remember well into adulthood. I think the Bongaree Jetty would be the perfect place, people (mainly children) are already often climbing atop the timber platform to jump into the Passage on any given day. Unfortunately, wet hands and feet on timber is not ideal, so why not make it safe and accessible, and there’s no distraction to passing traffic as would be the case on the main bridge? Whilst Government will no doubt do their best to make it cost ten times more than it should, I think it would be a great addition to the island for minimal outlay. For more detail on the Wellington platform visit www.architecturenow.co.nz/ articles/a-perfect-ten/ Dan M, Bribie Island
It is difficult to accept Harvey Fewing’s analysis of changes in ocean levels when he cannot even do basic maths. Ten times 3.6mm is not 30.6mm, but 36mm - closer to 1.5 inches. Also, thermal expansion does not alter the mass of water, only its volume. Besides evaporation, coastal ocean levels depend on rising and falling land, as well as temperature, rainfall and melt water from glaciers. Although satellite data gives an overall picture of ocean levels, averages always conceal local differences. A marker placed at Port Arthur in 1841 indicates a rise of only 0.8mm/year; to produce higher average, other places have not been so lucky. People who live on small islands don’t need Russian research to tell them the sea is encroaching. I did not enjoy the brackish water on Gili Meno, where the sea contaminates their ground-water. Aboriginal history tells of the great flooding which engulfed their land at the end of the last Ice Age. If Harvey wants some reading beyond the “mainstream media”, may I suggest that he obtains copies of New Scientist from the library. Its articles are usually easy to understand, but are read by scientists, so will not promote false information.
is that rising ocean levels, if indeed that is happening, are barely discernible. I completely reject the claims that the Pacific is flooding over small Islands – that is just not true. I am happy to live and build close to the ocean; apart from tsunamis, cyclones and other natural phenomena, I reckon I am safe. Once again thank you for your interest. Harvey Fewings
Hazard Reduction When was the last time you heard these two words – ‘Hazard Reduction’? Many years ago, over the winter months our local government would do regular burn-offs to lighten the fuel load over the summer months and thereby eliminate major bush fires and the subsequent loss of life associated with them. Maybe the words have found their way into the Politically Correct Banned List? Rodney Hansen, Bongaree

Response from Harvey Fewings Hazel, Firstly thank you for taking an interest in The Local Newspaper and for responding to articles, which we appreciate! I also appreciate you correcting me about basic maths, I accept your point. As for the rest, well, obviously we shall not agree about definitions and I am not going to get into discussions about Volume versus Mass; the fact of the matter
